We present evidence of the existence of a new supersymmetric quartet of nuclei in the A=190 mass region. The analysis is based on new experimental information on the odd-odd nucleus 194Ir from transfer and capture reactions. The new data allow the identification of a new supersymmetric quartet, consisting of the 192,193Os and 193,194Ir nuclei. We make explicit predictions fo r193Os, and suggest that its spectroscopic properties be measured in dedicated experiments. Finally, we study correlations between different transfer reactions.
We present evidence for a new supersymmetric quartet in the A=190 region of the nuclear mass table. New experimental information on transfer and neutron capture reactions to the odd-odd nucleaus 194 Ir strongly suggests the existence of a new supersymmetric quartet, consisting of the 192,193 Os and 193,194 Ir nuclei. We make explicit predictions for the odd-neutron nucleus 193 Os, and suggest that its spectroscopic properties be measured in dedicated experiments.
The relation of quarteting and clustering in atomic nuclei is discussed based on symmetry-considerations. This connection enables us to predict a complete high-energy cluster spectrum from the description of the low-energy quartet part. As an example the $^{28}$Si nucleus is considered, including its well-established ground-state region, the recently proposed superdeformed band, and the high-lying molecular resonances.
We present a new procedure of isospin symmetry breaking of cooper-quartets in nuclear matter using Ginzburg-Landau theory, namely we couple the cooper-quartets to the pion-meson field and $SU(2)$ gluons. The paper also describes phenomena resulting from this approach.
We provide a description of odd-odd self-conjugate nuclei in the sd shell in a formalism of collective quartets and pairs. Quartets are four-body structures carrying isospin T=0 while pairs can have either T=0 or T=1. Both quartets and pairs are labeled by the angular momentum J and they are chosen so as to describe the lowest states of 20Ne (quartets) and the lowest T=0 and T=1 states of 18F (pairs). We carry out configuration interaction calculations in spaces built by one quartet and one pair for 22Na and by two quartets and one pair for 26Al. The spectra that are generated are in good agre…
The band structure of N=Z nuclei is constructed from intrinsic states defined in terms of quartets. The simplest of these states is a condensate of collective quartets with isospin T=0. The other intrinsic states are built by promoting one quartet of the condensate to an excited T=0 configuration. From these intrinsic states, by angular momentum projection, band structures are generated that approximate well the experimental ones. The projected states also reproduce to a very good extent the spectra resulting from configuration interaction calculations based on the same quartets forming the in…
We describe the ground state of the isovector pairing Hamiltonian in self-conjugate nuclei by a product of collective quartets of different structure built from two neutrons and two protons coupled to total isospin T=0. The structure of the collective quartets is determined by an iterative variational procedure based on a sequence of diagonalizations of the pairing Hamiltonian in spaces of reduced size. The accuracy of the quartet model is tested for N=Z nuclei carrying valence nucleons outside the $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca, and $^{100}$Sn cores. The comparison with the exact solutions of the pairin…
We discuss the treatment of isovector pairing by an alpha-like quartet condensate which conserves exactly the particle number, the spin and the isospin. The results show that the quartet condensate describes accurately the isovector pairing correlations in the ground state of systems with an equal number of protons and neutrons
We provide a description of deformed $N=Z$ nuclei in a formalism of $α$-like quartets. Quartets are constructed variationally by resorting to the use of proper intrinsic states. Various types of intrinsic states are introduced which generate different sets of quartets for a given nucleus. Energy spectra are generated via configuration-iteraction calculations in the spaces built with these quartets. The approach has been applied to $^{24}$Mg and $^{28}$Si in the $sd$ shell and to $^{48}$Cr in the $pf$ shell. In all cases a good description of the low-lying spectra has been achieved. As a peculi…
We propose a simple quartet condensation model (QCM) which describes with very high accuracy the isovector pairing correlations in self-conjugate nuclei. The quartets have an alpha-like structure and are formed by collective isovector pairs. The accuracy of the QCM is tested for N=Z nuclei for which exact shell model diagonalizations can be performed. The calculations are done with two isovector pairing forces, one extracted from standard shell model interactions and the other of seniority type, acting, respectively, upon spherical and axially-deformed single-particle states. It is shown that …
We show that the correlations generated in the ground state of $N=Z$ nuclei by the isovector and isoscalar pairing forces can be treated with high precision as a condensate of alpha-like quartets. To treat these correlations, the quartet condensation model (QCM) is extended to the treatment of spherically symmetric isovector $(T=1,J=0)$ and isoscalar $(T=0,J=1)$ pairing forces . Within QCM we discuss the competition between $T=1$ and $T=0$ pairing correlations in the case of a two-level model and for $N=Z$ nuclei with nucleons moving in the open shells above $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca and $^{100}$Sn.…
Two variational quartet models previously employed in a treatment of pairing forces are extended to the case of a general two-body interaction. One model approximates the nuclear states as a condensate of identical quartets with angular momentum $J=0$ and isospin $T=0$ while the other let these quartets to be all different from each other. With these models we investigate the role of alpha-like quartet correlations both in the ground state and in the lowest $J=0$, $T=0$ excited states of even-even $N=Z$ nuclei in the $sd$-shell. We show that the ground state correlations of these nuclei can be…
Low-energy spectra of 4$n$ nuclei are described with high accuracy in terms of four-body correlated structures ("quartets"). The states of all $N\geq Z$ nuclei belonging to the $A=24$ isobaric chain are represented as a superposition of two-quartet states, with quartets being characterized by isospin $T$ and angular momentum $J$. These quartets are assumed to be those describing the lowest states in $^{20}$Ne ($T_z$=0), $^{20}$F ($T_z$=1) and $^{20}$O ($T_z$=2). We find that the spectrum of the self-conjugate nucleus $^{24}$Mg can be well reproduced in terms of $T$=0 quartets only and that, am…
The theory of quartet condensation is further developed. The onset of quartetting in homgeneous fermionic matter is studied with the help of an in-medium modified four fermion equation. It is found that at very low density quartetting wins over pairing. At zero temperature, in analogy to pairing, a set of equations for the quartet order parameter is given. Contrary to pairing, quartetting only exists for strong coupling and breaks down for weak coupling. Reasons for this finding are detailed. In an application to nuclear matter, the critical temperature for alpha particle condensation can reac…
Isoscalar (T=0,J=1) and isovector (T=1,J=0) pairing correlations in the ground state of self-conjugate nuclei are treated in terms of alpha-like quartets built by two protons and two neutrons coupled to total isospin T=0 and total angular momentum J=0. Quartets are constructed dynamically via an iterative variational procedure and the ground state is represented as a product of such quartets. It is shown that the quartet formalism describes accurately the ground state energies of realistic isovector plus isoscalar pairing Hamiltonians in nuclei with valence particles outside the 16O, 40Ca and …
The structure of the $N=Z$ nucleus $^{28}$Si is studied by resorting to an IBM-type formalism with $s$ and $d$ bosons representing isospin $T=0$ and angular momentum $J=0$ and $J=2$ quartets, respectively. $T=0$ quartets are four-body correlated structures formed by two protons and two neutrons. The microscopic nature of the quartet bosons, meant as images of the fermionic quartets, is investigated by making use of a mapping procedure and is supported by the close resemblance between the phenomenological and microscopically derived Hamiltonians. The ground state band and two low-lying side ban…
The quartet condensation model (QCM) is extended for the treatment of isovector and isoscalar pairing in odd-odd N=Z nuclei. In the extended QCM approach the lowest states of isospin T=1 and T=0 in odd-odd nuclei are described variationally by trial functions composed by a proton-neutron pair appended to a condensate of 4-body operators. The latter are taken as a linear superposition of an isovector quartet, built by two isovector pairs coupled to the total isospin T=0, and two collective isoscalar pairs. In all pairs the nucleons are distributed in time-reversed single-particle states of axia…
We analyze the role of maximally aligned isoscalar pairs in heavy $N=Z$ nuclei by employing a formalism of quartets. Quartets are superpositions of two neutrons and two protons coupled to total isospin $T=0$ and given $J$. The study is focused on the contribution of spin-aligned pairs carrying the angular momentum $J=9$ to the structure of $^{96}$Cd and $^{92}$Pd. We show that the role played by the $J=9$ pairs is quite sensitive to the model space and, in particular, it decreases considerably by passing from the simple $0g_{9/2}$ space to the more complete $1p_{1/2}$,$1p_{3/2}$,$0f_{5/2}$,$0g…
Quartetting ($α$-like clustering) occurs in low density matter ($\le 0.03$ fm$^{-3}$) which exists, e.g., at the surface of nuclei. It is of interest for the $α$ preformation to calculate the $α$ decay of heavy nuclei such as $^{212}$Po, but also in light nuclei (e.g., $^{20}$Ne) which shows strong signatures of quartetting. We analyze the intrinsic structure of the $α$-like cluster and the center of mass motion of the quartet, in particular the role of Pauli blocking. The Thomas-Fermi model for the (daughter) core nucleus is improved introducing quasiparticle nucleon states. Calculations perf…
We present a microscopic calculation of alpha-cluster formation in heavy nuclei by using the quartetting wave function approach. The interaction of the quartet with the core nucleus is taken in local density approximation. The alpha-cluster formation is found to be particularly sensitive to the interplay of the mean field felt by the alpha-cluster and the Pauli blocking as a consequence of antisymmetrization. The striking feature of alpha-cluster formation probability across the major shell closures of 82 protons and 126 neutrons is reproduced. The shell (or subshell) effects on the alpha-clus…
We present a microscopic calculation of $α$-cluster formation in heavy nuclei $^{104}$Te ($α$+$^{100}$Sn), $^{212}$Po ($α$+$^{208}$Pb) and their neighbors $^{102}$Sn, $^{102}$Te, $^{210}$Pb and $^{210}$Po by using the quartetting wave function approach. Improving the local density approximation, the shell structure of the core nucleus is considered, and the center-of-mass (c.o.m.) effective potential for the quartet is obtained self-consistently from the shell model wavefunctions. The $α$-cluster formation and decay probabilities are obtained by solving the bound-state of the c.o.m. motion of …
We examine the prediction of supersymmetric quantum mechanics that bands with identical gamma-ray energies occur in quartets. The experimental data suggest that this scenario is actually realized in nature. In the $A=150$ mass region, four known pairs of isospectral bands can be grouped in two quartets, while there are indications of such patterns around $A=190$. We introduce a small supersymmetry breaking, necessary to describe the details of the data. We derive relations among the transition rates that can be used to test our predictions. pacs: 21.10.Re, 11.30.Pb, 21.60.Fw, 23.20.Lv

The spectroscopic strengths of two-nucleon transfer reactions constitute a stringent test for two-nucleon correlations in the nuclear wave functions. A comparison between the recently measured 198Hg(d,alpha)196Au reaction and the predictions from the nuclear quartet supersymmetry lends further support to the validity of supersymmetry in nuclear physics.
Shell-model states involving several pseudospin doublets and ``intruder'' levels in nuclei, are combined into larger multiplets. The corresponding single-particle spectrum exhibits a supersymmetric pattern whose origin can be traced to the relativistic pseudospin symmetry of a nuclear mean-field Dirac Hamiltonian with scalar and vector potentials.
New experimental tests of nuclear supersymmetry are suggested. They involve the measurement of one- and two-nucleon transfer reactions between nuclei that belong to the same supermultiplet. These reactions provide a direct test of the `fermionic' sector, i.e. of the operators that change a boson into a fermion or vice versa. We present some theoretical predictions for the supersymmetric quartet of nuclei: 194Pt, 195Pt, 195Au and 196Au.
Exactly solvable solution for the spherical to gamma - unstable transition in transitional nuclei based on dual algebraic structure and nuclear supersymmetry concept is proposed. The duality relations between the unitary and quasispin algebraic structures for the boson and fermion systems are extended to mixed boson-fermion system. It is shown that the relation between the even-even and odd-A neighbors implied by nuclear supersymmetry in addition to dynamical symmetry limits can be also used for transitional regions. The experimental evidences are presented for even- even [E(5)] and odd-mass […
A simple model of nucleons coupled to angular momentum zero (s-pairs) occupying the valance shell of a semi-magic nuclei is considered. The model has a separable, orbit dependent pairing interaction which dominates over the kinetic term. It is shown that such an interaction leads to an exactly solvable model whose (0+) eigenstates and energies can be computed very easily with the help of the algebraic Bethe ansatz method. It is also shown that the model has a supersymmetry which connects the spectra of some semimagic nuclei. The results obtained from this model for the semimagic Ni isotopes fr…
Solvable supersymmetric algebraic model for descriptions of the spherical to gama unstable shape- phase transition in even and odd mass nuclei is proposed. This model is based on dual algebraic structure and Richardson - Gaudin method, where the duality relations between the unitary and quasispin algebraic structures for the boson and fermion systems are extended to mixed boson- fermion system. The structure of two type of nuclear supersymmetry schemes, based on the U(6/2) and U(6/4) supergroups, is discussed. We investigate the change in level structure induced by the phase transition by doin…
Spectroscopic information has been extracted on the hole-states of $^{55}$Ni, the least known of the quartet of nuclei ($^{55}$Ni, $^{57}$Ni, $^{55}$Co and $^{57}$Co), one neutron away from $^{56}$Ni, the N=Z=28 double magic nucleus. Using the $^{1}$H($^{56}$Ni,d)$^{55}$Ni transfer reaction in inverse kinematics, neutron spectroscopic factors, spins and parities have been extracted for the f$_{7/2}$, p$_{3/2}$ and the s$_{1/2}$ hole-states of $^{55}$Ni. This new data provides a benchmark for large basis calculations that include nucleonic orbits in both the sd and pf shells. State of the art c…

The quasi-degeneracy between the single-particle states $(n,\,l,\,j=l+1/2)$ and $(n-1,\,l+2,\,j=l+3/2)$ indicates a special and hidden symmetry in atomic nuclei---the so-called pseudospin symmetry (PSS)---which is an important concept in both spherical and deformed nuclei. A number of phenomena in nuclear structure have been successfully interpreted directly or implicitly by this symmetry, including nuclear superdeformed configurations, identical bands, quantized alignment, pseudospin partner bands, and so on. Since the PSS was recognized as a relativistic symmetry in 1990s, there have been co…
A supersymmetric extension of the dynamical symmetry group $Sp^{B}(12,R)$ of the Interacting Vector Boson Model (IVBM), to the orthosymplectic group $OSp(2Ω/12,R)$ is developed in order to incorporate fermion degrees of freedom into the nuclear dynamics and to encompass the treatment of odd mass nuclei. The bosonic sector of the supergroup is used to describe the complex collective spectra of the neighboring even-even nuclei and is considered as a core structure of the odd nucleus. The fermionic sector is represented by the fermion spin group $SO^{F}(2Ω)\supset SU^{F}(2)$. The so obtained, new…
The differential cross-section for the elastic scattering of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) with nuclear targets is calculated in the context of currently fashionable supersymmetric theories (SUSY). An effective four fermion interaction is constructed by considering i) $Z^0$ exchange ii)s-quark exchange and iii) Higgs exchange. It is expressed in terms of the form factors $f^0_V,f^0_A, f^0_S$ (isoscalar) and $f^1_V,f^1_A$ and $f^1_S$ (isovector) which contain all the information of the underlining theory. Numerical values were obtained using representative input parameters in the c…
Deformed shell model (DSM) based on Hartree-Fock intrinsic states is applied to address two current problems of interest. Firstly, in the $f_{5/2}pg_{9/2}$ model space with jj44b effective interaction along with isospin projection, DSM is used to describe the structure of the recently observed low-lying $T=0$ and $T=1$ bands in the heavy odd-odd N=Z nucleus $^{66}$As. DSM results are close to the data and also to the shell model results. For the $T=1$ band, DSM predicts structural change at $8^+$ just as in the shell model. In addition, the lowest two $T=0$ bands are found to have quasi-deuter…
Transfer reactions constitute a stringent test for nuclear supersymmetry, a theory that simultaneously describes neighboring nuclei with bosonic and fermionic character. We construct and analytically evaluate one-nucleon transfer matrix elements between supersymmetric partners with the U(6/4) case as an example, and stress the need for a careful treatment of bosonic and fermionic operators in the construction of mixed tensor operators.
Using the supersymmetric quantum mechanics we investigate the wave function-sensitive properties of the supersymmetric potentials which have received a lot of attention in the literature recently. We show that a superdeep potential and its phase-equivalent shallow-partner potential give very similar "rms" values for the weakly bound systems such as the deuteron and 11Be nuclei. Although the corresponding eigenstates differ in the node-number, our investigation on the 11Be(p,d)10Be single nucleon halo transfer reaction at 35 MeV show that also other physical quantities such as the cross section…
