In this paper we consider a moving quark in the thermal plasma at the N=2 Supergravity theory. By using the AdS/CFT correspondence we obtain energy loss of the quark. Then we consider the higher derivative corrections in charged AdS-black hole and calculate the drag force of the moving quark in the thermal plasma. Also we find a limit which N=2 Supergravity solutions are correspondening to the N=4 Super Yang-Mills solutions for the heavy quark.
In this paper we consider a quark moving in D=5, ${\mathcal{N}}=2$ supergravity thermal plasma. By using three charge non-extremal black hole solution (STU solution) we calculate drag force on the quark and diffusion constant from $AdS$/CFT correspondence.
We investigate the behavior of stationary string configurations on a five-dimensional AdS black hole background which correspond to quark-antiquark pairs steadily moving in an N=4 super Yang-Mills thermal bath. There are many branches of solutions, depending on the quark velocity and separation as well as on whether Euclidean or Lorentzian configurations are examined.
The covariant quantization of massless D=11 superparticle (M0-brane) in its twistor-like Lorentz harmonic formulation is used to clarify the origin and some properties of the Berkovits pure spinor approach to quantum superstring and to search for hidden symmetries of D=11 supergravity. In the twistor like Lorentz harmonic formulation, the SO(16) symmetry is seen already at the classical level. The quantization produces the linearized supergravity multiplet as 128+128=256 component Majorana spinor of SO(16) and also shows an indirect argument in favor of the possible E8 symmetry.
In this paper we consider the drag force problem in the STU model. Already this problem and related topics were studied in ${\mathcal N}=4$ SYM theory. Here we study the same problem in ${\mathcal N}=2$ supergravity theory with an R-charge black hole (the STU model). This paper extends our previous work [1,2] by studying more general charge configurations and by taking into account the effect of a constant electromagnetic field and higher derivative corrections. We consider a single quark and a $q \bar q$ pair in a three charge non-extremal black hole background. First by using the AdS/CFT cor…
Applying AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the effect of a constant magnetic field $\mathcal{B}$ on the drag force associated with a heavy quark moving through a strongly-coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) plasma. The quark is considered moving transverse and parallel to $\mathcal{B}$, respectively. It is shown that for transverse case, the drag force is linearly dependent on $\mathcal{B}$ in all regions. While for parallel case, the drag force increases monotonously with increasing $\mathcal{B}$ and also reveals a linear behavior in the regions of strong $\mathcal{B}$. In …
We use holography and a string probe approach to compute the drag force on a quark moving in a thermal plasma of non-commutative Yang-Mills (NCYM) theories in various dimensions. The gravity background in these cases are described by a particular decoupling limit of non-extremal (D$(p-2)$, D$p$) brane bound state system. We show how the drag force on an external quark moving in the dual NCYM theories gets corrected due to non-commutativity and as a result the effective viscosity of the plasma gets reduced. We have obtained the drag force for both small and large non-commutativity. This was kno…
To study drag force on a moving heavy quark through a plasma, we use a deformed AdS space-time, in which deformation parameter $c$ describes non-conformality in AdS/QCD. In this case the quark is mapped to a probe string in the AdS space. Considering probable contribution of deformation parameter in the probe string, we apply a general form of c-dependent string ansatz in the drag force computation. Then we find the acceptable value of this parameter as it satisfies QCD calculations. Using this result, we also discuss diffusion constant which is in agreement with phenomenological result for no…
We find that the drag force for a heavy quark moving through N=4 SU(N_c) supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma is generally enhanced by the leading correction due to finite 't Hooft coupling. For a bottom quark, the drag force increases by about 50%, whereas for a charm quark it increases by about 5%. We also discuss the drag force for the case of Gauss-Bonnet gravity.
We study quarks moving in strongly-coupled plasmas that have supergravity duals. We compute the friction coefficient of strings dual to such quarks for general static supergravity backgrounds near the horizon. Our results also show that a previous conjecture on the bound has to be modified and higher friction coefficients can be achieved.
Computations of the drag force on a heavy quark moving through a thermal state of strongly coupled N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory have appeared recently in hep-th/0605158, hep-ph/0605199, and hep-th/0605182. I compare the strength of this effect between N=4 gauge theory and QCD, using the static force between external quarks to normalize the 't Hooft coupling. Comparing N=4 and QCD at fixed energy density then leads to a relaxation time of roughly 2 fm/c for charm quarks moving through a quark-gluon plasma at T=250 MeV. This estimate should be regarded as preliminary because of the difficulties o…
A new heterotic N=2 string with manifest target space supersymmetry is constructed by combining a conventional N=2 string in the right-moving sector and a Green-Schwarz-Berkovits type string in the left-moving sector. The corresponding sigma model is then obtained by turning on background fields for the massless excitations. We compute the beta functions and we partially check the OPE's of the superconformal algebra perturbatively in $α'$, all in superspace. The resulting field equations describe N=1 self-dual supergravity.
The effect of finite-coupling corrections to the drag force on a moving heavy quark in the Super Yang-Mills plasma is investigated. These corrections are related to curvature-squared corrections in the corresponding gravity dual. The results are compared with the dual gauge theory. It is shown that curvature-squared corrections affect the drag force. It is shown that corrections to the drag force depend on the velocity of the heavy quark. The diffusion coefficient of non-relativistic heavy quarks is calculated from the drag force. In addition, we also calculate the drag force on a moving heavy…
We study the drag force and diffusion coefficient with respect to a moving heavy quark in a D-instanton background, which corresponds to the Yang-Mills theory in the deconfining, high-temperature phase. It is shown that the presence of the D-instanton density tends to increase the drag force and decrease the diffusion coefficient, reverse to the effects of the velocity and the temperature. Moreover, the inclusion of the D-instanton density makes the medium less viscous.
We perform the calculation of drag force acting on a massive quark moving through an anisotropic ${\cal N}=4$ SU(N)= 4 SU(N) Super Yang-Mills plasma in the presence of a U(1) chemical potential. We present the numerical results for any value of anisotropy and arbitrary direction of the quark velocity with respect to the direction of anisotropy. We find the effect of chemical potential or charge density will enhance the drag force for the our charged solution.
We employ methods of gauge/string duality to analyze the drag force on a heavy quark moving through a strongly coupled, anisotropic \mathcal{N}=4, SU(N) super Yang- Mills plasma in the presence of a finite U(1) chemical potential. We present numerical results valid for any value of the anisotropy parameter and the U(1) charge density and arbitrary direction of the quark velocity with respect to the direction of anisotropy. In the small anisotropy limit we are also able to furnish analytical results.
To study the rate of energy and momentum loss of a heavy quark in QGP, specifically in the hydrodynamic regime, we use fluid/gravity duality and construct a perturbative procedure to find the string solution in gravity side. We show that by this construction the drag force exerted on the quark can be computed perturbatively, order by order in a boundary derivative expansion. At ideal order, our result is just the drag force exerted on a moving quark in thermal plasma with thermodynamics variables promoted to become local functions of space and time. Furthermore, we apply this procedure to a tr…
We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to compute the drag force experienced by a heavy quark moving through a maximally supersymmetric SU(N) super Yang-Mills plasma at nonzero temperature and R-charge chemical potential and at large 't Hooft coupling. We resolve a discrepancy in the literature between two earlier studies of such quarks. In addition, we consider small fluctuations of the spinning strings dual to these probe quarks and find no evidence of instabilities. We make some comments about suitable D7-brane boundary conditions for the dual strings.
The Wilson loop in the non-commutative dipole field theory is re-examined within the framework of dual gravity description. In contrast to the previous investigations, we let the dual string be moving along the deformed $S^5$ and find the exact expression of the interquark potential. The potential shows a Coulomb behavior at all distance and does not have a minimum distance between quarks, which exhibits in the static configuration. After comparing the potential of the static and moving configurations we find that while the dual string is static at long distance it will transit to a moving con…
The AdS/CFT correspondence and a classical test string approximation are used to calculate the drag force on an external quark moving in a thermal plasma of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory. This computation is motivated by the phenomenon of jet-quenching in relativistic heavy ion collisions.
We study corrections to the drag force exerted on a quark moving through a quark-gluon plasma of finite extent, using holographic methods. Interestingly we find that the leading correction is negative, i.e. it reduces the magnitude of the drag force as compared to its value in infinite volume.
We apply the standard technique of Null Melvin Twist to the non-extremal (D1, D3) bound state configuration of type IIB string theory. Under a particular decoupling limit, such configuration represents the gravity dual of the non-relativistic, non-commutative Yang-Mills theory at a finite temperature. We then use the AdS/CFT and the string probe approach to compute the drag force on an external quark moving through such a hot non-relativistic, non-commutative YM plasma. We discuss various limiting cases to show the interplay between the non-relativistic as well as the non-commutative effect of…
We study solutions of the supergravity equations with the string-like sources moving with the speed of light. An exact solution is obtained for the gravitational field of a boosted ring string in any dimension greater than three.
We compute holographically the energy loss of a moving quark in various states of the D1-D5 CFT. In the dual bulk geometries, the quark is the end of a trailing string, and the profile of this string determines the drag force exerted by the medium on the quark. We find no drag force when the CFT state has no momentum, and a nontrivial force for any value of the velocity (even at rest) when the string extends in the supersymmetric D1-D5-P black-hole geometry, or a horizonless microstate geometry thereof. As the length of the throat of the microstate geometry increases, the drag force approaches…

We determine the most general form of the covariant drag force exerted on a quark moving through a fluid dynamical flow. Up to first order in derivative expansion, our general formula requires the specification of seven coefficient functions. We use the perturbative method introduced in arXiv:1202.2737 and find all these coefficients in the hydrodynamic regime of a $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM plasma. Having this general formula, we can obtain the rate of the energy and momentum loss of a quark, namely the drag force, in a general flow. This result makes it possible to perturbatively study the motion o…
We investigate drag force in a thermal plasma of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory via both fundamental and Dirichlet strings under the influence of non-zero NSNS $B$-field background. In the description of AdS/CFT correspondence the endpoint of these strings correspondes to an external monopole or quark moving with a constant electromagnetic field. We demonstrate how the configuration of string tail as well as the drag force obtains corrections in this background.
In this study, the gauge/string duality is used to investigate the dynamics of a moving heavy quark in a strongly coupled, non-conformal plasma. The drag force in this non-conformal model is smaller than that of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) plasma and decreases as the level of non-conformality is increased. At intermediate temperatures, the world-sheet temperature, which is derived numerically by calculating the world-sheet horizon, deviates from its conformal value, but at high temperatures, it tends to its conformal value.
Using AdS/CFT we investigate the effect of angular-momentum-induced anisotropy on the instantaneous drag force of a heavy quark. The dual description is that of a string moving in the background of a Kerr-AdS black holes. The system exhibits the expected focussing of jets towards the impact parameter plane. We put forward that we can use the connection between this focussing behavior and the angular momentum induced pressure gradient to extrapolate the pressure gradient correction to the drag force that can be used for transverse elliptic flow in realistic RHIC. The result is recognizable as a…
The effects of charge and finite 't Hooft coupling correction on drag force and jet quenching parameter are investigated. To study charge effect and finite 't Hooft coupling correction, we consider Maxwell charge and Gauss-Bonnet terms, respectively. The background is Reissner-Nordström-AdS black brane solution in Gauss-Bonnet gravity. It is shown that these corrections affect drag force and jet quenching parameter. We find an analytic solution of drag force in this background which depends on Gauss-Bonnet coupling and charge. We set Gauss-Bonnet coupling to be zero and find drag force in the …
We calculate the static potential, the drag force and the jet quenching parameter in strongly coupled anisotropic N=4 super Yang-Mills plasma. We find that the jet quenching is in general enhanced in presence of anisotropy compared to the isotropic case and that its value depends strongly on the direction of the moving quark and the direction along which the momentum broadening occurs. The jet quenching is strongly enhanced for a quark moving along the anisotropic direction and momentum broadening happens along the transverse one. The parameter gets lower for a quark moving along the transvers…
The imaginary part of the inter-quarks potential of moving heavy quarkonia is investigated in a dual supergravity of the AdS background deformed by dilaton, which induces the gauge field condensate in the dual gauge theory. We analyze the quark anti-quark pair moving transverse and parallel to the plasma wind, respectively. It is shown that for both cases the presence of D-instanton density tends to increase the inter-distance and decrease the imaginary potential, reverse to the effect of the pair's velocity. Moreover, it is found that the D-instanton density has stronger effects for the paral…
In this note, two important transport observables in the RHIC experiment, relaxation time constant and jet quenching parameter, are calculated from an AdS/QCD model. A quark moving in the viscous medium such as the Quark-Gluon-Plasma is modelled by an open string whose end point travels on the boundary of a deformed AdS_5 black hole. The correction introduced via the deformed AdS_5 is believed to help us better understand the data which is expected to be measured in the RHIC.
We use gauge/string duality to model a doubly heavy diquark in a color antitriplet moving in a thermal plasma at temperatures near the critical. With the assumption that there is no relative motion between the constituents, we calculate the drag force on the diquark. At high enough speed we find that diquark string configurations develop a cusp. In addition, we estimate the spatial string tension at non-zero baryon chemical potential, and also briefly discuss an extension to a triply heavy triquark in a color triplet.
Single quarks moving in the vacuum of confining gauge theories are stopped by a drag force. The holographic description relates the confining scale in the bulk geometry with a range of physical values for the drag force in the vacuum. The vacuum drag force acting on the isolated quark directly manifests quark confinement since it prevents the quark from walking freely in the vacuum. However, analytical expressions for the drag force as a function of the quark velocity were lacking. In the present work, we propose that the vacuum drag force is given by the regularized zero-temperature limit of …
In this Letter, we bring together two topics in the holographic correspondence - quantum chaos and quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We establish that the first relativistic correction to drag force experienced by a charge carrier moving through a thermal medium (for example, a quark in QGP) at a constant velocity is fixed by the butterfly velocity. Moreover, we show that this result is robust against stringy corrections and anisotropy. For the jet quenching parameter, we find that it is related to the butterfly velocity along the momentum broadening direction and temperature in the spirit of the ``Pl…
We calculate the drag force on a heavy quark hit by a shock wave, thus generalizing the strongly coupled AdS/CFT heavy quark drag calculations to both hot and cold nuclear matter. The derivation employs the trailing string configuration, similar to that used in the literature for a quark moving through a thermal medium, though in the shock metric the string profile is described by a much simpler analytic function. Our expression for the drag depends on the typical transverse momentum scale of the matter in the shock. For a thermal medium this scale becomes proportional to the temperature, maki…
We use holographic duality to analyze the drag force on, and consequent energy loss of, a heavy quark moving through a strongly coupled conformal fluid with non-vanishing gradients in its velocity and temperature. We derive the general expression for the drag force to first order in the fluid gradients. Using this general expression, we show that a quark that is instantaneously at rest, relative to the fluid, in a fluid whose velocity is changing with time feels a nonzero force. And, we show that for a quark that is moving ultra-relativistically, the first order gradient "corrections" become l…
We study the energy loss of a heavy quark slowly moving through an evolving strongly coupled plasma. We use the linearized fluid/gravity correspondence to describe small perturbations of the medium flow with general spacetime dependence. This all order linearized hydrodynamics results in a drag force exerted on a heavy quark even when it is at rest with the fluid element. We show how the general contribution to the drag force can be derived order by order in the medium velocity gradients and provide explicit results valid up to the third order. We then obtain an approximate semi-analytic resul…
We study a heavy impurity moving longitudinal with the direction of an external magnetic field in an anomalous chiral medium. Such system would carry a non-dissipative current of chiral magnetic effect associated with the anomaly. We show, by generalizing Landau's criterion for superfluidity, that the "anomalous component" which gives rise to the anomalous transport will {\it not} contribute to the drag experienced by an impurity. We argue on a very general basis that those systems with a strong magnetic field would exhibit an interesting transport phenomenon -- the motion of the heavy impurit…
The complete absence of isolated quarks reaching particle detectors after high energy collisions suggests that some physical mechanism generates resistance to their propagation in the vacuum. In order to reveal such a mechanism, we analyze the fate of an infinitely heavy quark that is initially propagating in the vacuum with inertial motion. The non-perturbative structure of the vacuum is treated here using the gauge/ gravity correspondence, the isolated quark on the boundary gauge theory is dual to a trailing string moving in the bulk of a higher dimensional curved space. We find that, for a …
