The effect of finite-coupling corrections to the drag force on a moving heavy quark in the Super Yang-Mills plasma is investigated. These corrections are related to curvature-squared corrections in the corresponding gravity dual. The results are compared with the dual gauge theory. It is shown that curvature-squared corrections affect the drag force. It is shown that corrections to the drag force depend on the velocity of the heavy quark. The diffusion coefficient of non-relativistic heavy quarks is calculated from the drag force. In addition, we also calculate the drag force on a moving heavy quark in the Gauss-Bonnet background.
We present the N = 2 supersymmetric completion of a scalar curvature squared term in a completely gauge independent form. We also elaborate on its component structure.
We use the real-time finite-temperature AdS/CFT correspondence to compute the effect of general R^2 corrections to the gravitational action in AdS space on the shear viscosity of the dual gauge theory. The R^2 terms in AdS_5 are determined by the central charges of the CFT. We present an example of a four-dimensional gauge theory in which the conjectured lower bound of 1/(4π) on the viscosity-to-entropy ratio is violated for finite N.
We study the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term as the leading higher-curvature correction to pure Einstein gravity. Assuming a tree-level ultraviolet completion free of ghosts or tachyons, we prove that the GB term has a nonnegative coefficient in dimensions greater than four. Our result follows from unitarity of the spectral representation for a general ultraviolet completion of the GB term.
Curvature-squared corrections for D-brane actions in type II string theory were derived by Bachas, Bain and Green. Here we write down a generalisation of these corrections to all orders in $F$, the field strength of the U(1) gauge field on the brane. Some of these terms are needed to restore consistency with T-duality.
Canonical formulation for an action containing scalar curvature squared term $(R^2)$ in arbitrary dimension has been performed in maximally symmetric space-time. The quantum dynamics does not alter significantly from the same in $4$-dimension. Classical solution is also at par with the one presented by Starobinsky. WKB approximation peaks around the classical solution.
In this paper we derive the most general curvature squared action coupled to an arbitrary number of vector multiplets in four dimensional $N=2$ supergravity using the dilaton Weyl multiplet. The action that we derive is encoded in a single holomorphic prepotential.
We compute the entropies for general curvature squared gravities in arbitrary dimensions using the conserved charge and Virasoro algebra from surface term. We introduce an auxiliary tensor field in order to obtain the boundary action which establish a variational principle. Our results reproduce those in some specific models, that is, the Gauss-Bonnet, new massive gravity (NMG), and critical gravity.
Considering a model with Coupled Dilaton-Squared Curvature terms and a dilatonic potential which replace the cosmological constant, we present an analytic hyperscaling violating solution which is the generalization of arXiv:1305.3279 for non zero $θ$. We show that a specific coupling between dilaton and the squared curvature terms produces a simple logarithmic behavior for the dilaton. By imposing the null energy condition and stability constraints, we investigate the allowed regions for the parameters of this model. We then study the perturbations around $\mathrm{AdS_4} $ in the UV and $\math…
We revisit the background solution for scalar matter coupled higher derivative gravity originally reported in arXiv: 1409.8019[hep-th]. In this letter, we choose a convenient ansatz for metric which determines the first order perturbative corrections to scalar as well as geometry.
We describe the supersymmetric completion of several curvature-squared invariants for ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supergravity in six dimensions. The construction of the invariants is based on a close interplay between superconformal tensor calculus and recently developed superspace techniques to study general off-shell supergravity-matter couplings. In the case of minimal off-shell Poincaré supergravity based on the dilaton-Weyl multiplet coupled to a linear multiplet as a conformal compensator, we describe off-shell supersymmetric completions for all the three possible purely gravitational curvature-sq…

We investigate $D$-dimensional gravitational model with curvature-quadratic and curvature-quartic correction terms: $R+R^2+R^4$. It is assumed that the corresponding higher dimensional spacetime manifold undergos a spontaneous compactification to a manifold with warped product structure. Special attention is paid to the stability of the extra-dimensional factor space for a model with critical dimension D=8. It is shown that for certain parameter regions the model allows for a freezing stabilization of this space. The effective four-dimensional cosmological constant is negative and the external…
We evaluate one-loop amplitudes of N = 4 supergravity in D dimensions using the double-copy procedure that expresses gravity integrands in terms of corresponding ones in Yang--Mills theory. We organize the calculation in terms of a set of gauge-invariant tensors, allowing us to identify evanescent contributions. Among the latter, we find the matrix elements of supersymmetric completions of curvature-squared operators. In addition, we find that such evanescent terms and the U(1)-anomalous contributions to one-loop N = 4 amplitudes are tightly intertwined. The appearance of evanescent operators i…
Lovelock gravity is an important extension of General Relativity that provides a promising framework to study curvature corrections to the Einstein action, while avoiding ghosts and keeping second order field equations. This paper derives the greybody factors for D-dimensional black holes arising in a theory with a Gauss-Bonnet curvature-squared term. These factors describe the non-trivial coupling between black holes and quantum fields during the evaporation process: they can be used both from a theoretical viewpoint to investigate the intricate spacetime structure around such a black hole, a…
We suggest a thick braneworld model in the squared curvature gravity theory. Despite the appearance of higher order derivatives, the localization of gravity and various bulk matter fields is shown to be possible. The existence of the normalizable gravitational zero mode indicates that our four-dimensional gravity is reproduced. In order to localize the chiral fermions on the brane, two types of coupling between the fermions and the brane forming scalar is introduced. The first coupling leads us to a Schrödinger equation with a volcano potential, and the other a Pöschl-Teller potential. In both…
It has been observed earlier that, in principle, it is possible to obtain a quantum mechanical interpretation of higher order quantum cosmological models in the spatially homogeneous and isotropic background, if auxiliary variable required for the Hamiltonian formulation of the theory is chosen properly. It was suggested that for such a choice, it is required to get rid of all the total derivative terms from the action containing higher order curvature invariant terms, prior to the introduction of auxiliary variable. Here, the earlier work has been modified and it is shown that the action, $A=…
Lapse function appears as Lagrange multiplier in Einstein-Hilbert action and its variation leads to the (0 0) equation of Einstein, which corresponds to the Hamiltonian constraint equation. In higher order theory of gravity the situation is not that simple. Here, we take up the curvature squared (R^2) action being supplemented by an appropriate boundary term in the background of Robertson-Walker minisuperspace metric, and show how to identify the constraint equation and formulate the Hamiltonian without detailed constraint analysis. The action is finally expressed in the canonical form $A = \i…
In this paper, we investigate AdS/BCFT for curvature-squared gravity. To warm up, we start with Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We derive the one point function of stress tensor and show that the central charge related to the norm of displacement operator is positive for the couplings obeying causality constraints. Furthermore, by imposing the null energy condition on the end-of-the-world brane, we prove the holographic g-theorem for Gauss-Bonnet gravity. This corrects a wrong point of view in the literature, which claims that the holographic g-theorem is violated for Gauss-Bonnet gravity. As a by-produ…
Theories with curvature squared terms in the action are known to contain ghost modes in general. However, if we regard curvature squared terms as quantum corrections to the original theory, the emergence of ghosts may be simply due to the perturbative truncation of a full non-perturbative theory. If this is the case, there should be a way to live with ghosts. In this paper, we take the Euclidean path integral approach, in which ghost degrees of freedom can be, and are integrated out in the Euclideanized spacetime. We apply this procedure to Einstein gravity with a Weyl curvature squared correc…
We find a class of d=4, N=2 supergravity with $R^2$-interactions that admits exact BPS black holes. The prepotential contains quadratic, cubic and chiral curvature-squared terms. Black hole geometry realizes stretched horizon, and consists of anti-de Sitter, intermediate and outermost flat regions. Mass and entropy depends on charges and are modified not only by higher curvature terms but also by quadratic term in the prepotential. Consequently, even for large charges, entropy is no longer proportional to mass-squared.
We analyze gravitational theories with quadratic curvature terms, including the case of conformally invariant Weyl gravity, motivated by the intention to find a renormalizable theory of gravity in the ultraviolet region, yet yielding general relativity at long distances. In the Hamiltonian formulation of Weyl gravity, the number of local constraints is equal to the number of unstable directions in phase space, which in principle could be sufficient for eliminating the unstable degrees of freedom in the full nonlinear theory. All the other theories of quadratic type are unstable -- a problem ap…
Off-shell formulations of supergravities allow one to add closed-form higher-derivative super-invariants that are separately supersymmetric to the usual lower-derivative actions. In this paper we study four-dimensional off-shell N=1 supergravity where additional super-invariants associated with the square of the Weyl tensor and the square of the Ricci scalar are included. We obtain a variety of solutions where the metric describes domain walls, Lifshitz geometries, and also solutions of a kind known as gyratons. We find that in some cases the solutions can be supersymmetric for appropriate cho…
We compute the macroscopic entropy of the supersymmetric rotating dyonic strings carrying linear momentum in 6D (1,0) supergravity with curvature squared corrections. Our calculation is based on Sen's entropy function formalism applied to the near-horizon geometry of the string solution taking the form of an extremal BTZ$\times S^3$. The final entropy formula states that the two independent supersymmetric completions of Riemann tensor squared contribute equally to the entropy. A further $S^3$ compactification of the 6D theory results in a matter coupled 3D supergravity model in which the quant…
We study the New Massive Gravity extended by the curvature cubed invariant and the Cosmological Constant using the tree-level scattering amplitudes on a maximally symmetric space-time. We identify the parameter space, consisting of the ratio between C.C. and graviton mass squared and the relative coupling strength between curvature squared and cubed invariants, for which the massive spin-2 is a ghost. Different phases of this model are also discussed.
For a general three dimensional theory of (super-)gravity coupled to arbitrary matter fields with arbitrary set of higher derivative terms in the effective action, we give an algorithm for consistently truncating the theory to a theory of pure (super-)gravity with the gravitational sector containing only Einstein-Hilbert, cosmological constant and Chern-Simons terms. We also outline the procedure for finding the parameters of the truncated theory. As an example we consider dimensional reduction on S^2 of the 5-dimensional minimal supergravity with curvature squared terms and obtain the truncat…
We compute the spectrum of quarter BPS dyons in freely acting Z_2 and Z_3 orbifolds of type II string theory compactified on a six dimensional torus. For large charges the result for statistical entropy computed from the degeneracy formula agrees with the corresponding black hole entropy to first non-leading order after taking into account corrections due to the curvature squared terms in the effective action. The result is significant since in these theories the entropy of a small black hole, computed using the curvature squared corrections to the effective action, fails to reproduce the stat…
In this note we consider the logarithmic curvature correction to Lifshitz and hyper scaling violation geometries. We investigate the effect of this correction to the gauge kinetic function f and the effective potential V . For the case of hyper scaling violating we show that the coupling between dilaton and the correction terms exhibit the logarithmic behavior for dilaton like for the case of squared curvature correction. We find the unexpected form of gauge kinetic function and potential in the presence of logarithmic terms. We try to resolve the IR singularity of Lifshitz and hyperscaling vi…
Curvature squared terms are added to a consistent formulation of supergravity on manifolds with boundary which is meant to represent the low energy limit of the strongly coupled heterotic string. These terms are necessary for the cancellation of gravitational anomalies and for reduction to lower dimensions with broken chiral symmetry. The consequences of anomaly cancellation when flux and extrinsic curvature terms are taken into account have yet to be fully exploited, but some implications for flux terms are discussed.
We study holographic shear sum rules in Einstein gravity with curvature squared corrections. Sum rules relate weighted integral over spectral densities of retarded correlators in the shear channel to the one point functions of the CFTs. The proportionality constant can be written in terms of the data of three point functions of the stress tenors of the CFT ($t_2$ and $t_4$). For CFTs dual to two derivative Einstein gravity, this proportionality constant is just $\frac{d}{2(d+1)}$. This has been verified by a direct holographic computation of the retarded correlator for Einstein gravity in $AdS…
