We present dynamical simulations of NGC 2523 and NGC 4245, two barred galaxies (types SB(r)b and SB(r)0/a, respectively) with prominent inner rings. Our goal is to estimate the bar pattern speeds in these galaxies by matching a sticky-particle simulation to the $B$-band morphology, using near-infrared $K_s$-band images to define the gravitational potentials. We compare the pattern speeds derived by this method with those derived in our previous paper using the well-known Tremaine-Weinberg continuity equation method. The inner rings in these galaxies, which are likely to be resonance features, help to constrain the dynamical models. We find that both methods give the same pattern speeds within the errors.
We analyse long-slit spectra of four early-type galaxies which extend from ~1 to ~3 effective radii: IC1459, IC3370, NGC3379 and NGC4105. We have extracted the full line-of-sight velocity distribution (in the case of NGC3379 we also used data from the literature) which we model using the two-integral approach. Using two-integral modelling we find no strong evidence for dark haloes, but the fits suggest that three-integral modelling is necessary. We also find that the inferred constant mass-to-light ratio in all four cases is typical for early-type galaxies. Finally, we also discuss the constra…
We present dynamical modeling of nearby E4 galaxy NGC 2974. The galaxy was observed with the integral-field spectrograph SAURON. An axisymmetric stellar dynamical model is constructed using a three-integral orbit superposition Schwarschild modeling technique. We explore the dynamical structure and investigate the distribution and dynamics of the gas.
Using recent observations of the kinematics of the disk stars the dynamical state of the disk of NGC 488 is discussed. The disk is shown to be dynamically `cool', so that NGC 488 cannot have experienced many -- even minor -- mergers in the past.
In this paper we analyse the relations between a previously described oblate Jaffe model for an ellipsoidal galaxy and the observed quantities for NGC 2974, and obtain the length and velocity scales for a relevant elliptical galaxy model. We then derive the finite total mass of the model from these scales, and finally find a good fit of an isotropic oblate Jaffe model by using the Gauss-Hermite fit parameters and the observed ellipticity of the galaxy NGC 2974. The model is also used to predict the total luminous mass of NGC 2974, assuming that the influence of dark matter in this galaxy on th…
Evidence for a disturbed velocity structure in the outer regions of the galaxy NGC1399 comes from a re-analysis of the planetary nebulae data from Arnaboldi et al. (1994). We find a strong rotation along a P.A.=140 degrees for R<=140'' which is followed by a rapid drop off at larger radii, where the velocity dispersion starts to increase. This kinematical behavior can be interpreted as an indication for an interaction scenario. Interaction is advocated in previous analysis of the halo regions of this system, based on different dynamical tracers such as globular clusters and X-rays, but in all …
We derive accurate parameters related to the CMD, structure and dynamical state of M52 and NGC3960, whose fields are affected by differential reddening. Compared to open clusters in different dynamical states studied with similar methods, the core and overall parameters of M52 are consistent with an open cluster more massive than 1000Mo and ~60Myr old, with some mass segregation in the inner region. The core of NGC3960 is in an advanced dynamical state with strong mass segregation in the core/halo region, while the somewhat flat overall MF (x~1.07) suggests low-mass star evaporation. The exces…
In this paper, using 2MASS photometry, we study the structural and dynamical properties of four young star clusters viz. King 16, NGC 1931, NGC 637 and NGC 189. For the clusters King 16, NGC 1931, NGC 637 and NGC 189, we obtain the limiting radii of 7', 12', 6' and 5' which correspond to linear radii of 3.6 pc, 8.85 pc, 3.96 pc and 2.8 pc respectively. The reddening values $E(B-V)$ obtained for the clusters are 0.85, 0.65--0.85, 0.6 and 0.53 and their true distances are 1786 pc, 3062 pc, 2270 pc and 912 pc respectively. Ages of the clusters are 6 Myr, 4 Myr, 4 Myr and 10 Myr respectively. We c…
We use radial velocities of member stars and cluster surface brightness profiles to non-parametrically determine the mass density profiles and isotropic phase-space distribution functions $f(E)$ for the globular clusters M15 (NGC7078), 47~Tuc (NGC104), NGC~362, and NGC~3201. Assuming isotropy and using the velocity dispersion and surface brightness profiles, the Jeans equation uniquely determines the mass density profile. In the two centrally-concentrated clusters, M15 and 47~Tuc, we find that the mass-to-light ratios (M/L's) reach minima around 1\arcmin, and increase by more than a factor of …
We present a unique set of nested stellar kinematical maps of NGC 3377 obtained with the integral-field spectrographs OASIS and SAURON. We then construct general axisymmetric dynamical models for this galaxy, based on the Schwarzschild numerical orbit superposition technique applied to these complementary measurements. We show how these two datasets constrain the mass of the central massive object and the overall mass-to-light ratio of the galaxy by probing the inner and outer regions respectively. The simultaneous use of both datasets leads us to confirm the presence of a massive black hole w…
We investigate, via numerical simulations, the tidal stripping and accretion of globular clusters (GCs). In particular, we focus on creating models that simulate the situation for the GC systems of NGC 1404 and NGC 1399 in the Fornax cluster, which have poor (specific frequency $S_{\rm N}$ $\sim$ 2) and rich ($S_{\rm N}$ $\sim$ 10) GC systems respectively. We initially assign NGC 1404 in our simulation a typical $S_{\rm N}$ ($\sim$ 5) for cluster ellipticals, and find that its GC system can only be reduced through stripping to the presently observed value, if its orbit is highly eccentric (wit…
We have used a proper combination of multiband high-resolution {\it HST-WFPC2} and wide-field ground based observations to image the galactic globular cluster NGC 6266 (M62). The extensive photometric data set allows us to determine the center of gravity and to construct the most extended radial profile ever published for this cluster including, for the first time, detailed star counts in the very inner region. The star density profile is well reproduced by a standard King model with an extended core ($\sim 19''$) and a modest value of the concentration parameter ($c=1.5$), indicating that the…
We present new radial velocities for 87 globular clusters around the elliptical galaxy NGC 4472, and combine these with our previously published data to create a data set of velocities for 144 globular clusters around NGC 4472. We utilize this data set to analyze the kinematics of the NGC 4472 globular cluster system. The new data confirms our previous discovery that the metal-poor clusters have significantly higher velocity dispersion than the metal-rich clusters in NGC 4472. We also find very little or no rotation in the more spatially concentrated metal-rich population, with a resulting upp…
The NGC 1407 Group stands out among nearby structures by its properties that suggest it is massive and evolved. It shares properties with entities that have been called fossil groups: the 1.4 magnitude differential between the dominant elliptical galaxy and the second brightest galaxy comes close to satisfying the definition that has been used to define the fossil class. There are few intermediate luminosity galaxies, but a large number of dwarfs in the group. We estimate there are 250 group members to the depth of our survey. The slope of the faint end of the luminosity function (reaching M_R…
We present three-integral dynamical models for the three Local Group dwarf elliptical galaxies: NGC147, NGC185, and NGC205. It is the first time models are constructed for the Local Group dEs that allow for the presence of dark matter at large radii and that are constrained by kinematics out to at least one half-light radius. The B-band mass-to-light ratios of all three galaxies are rather similar, (M/L)_B = 3-4. Within the inner two half-light radii, about 40-50% of the mass is in the form of dark matter, so dEs contain about as much dark matter as bright ellipticals. NGC205 and NGC147 have a…
The dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 185- the closest early-type galaxy with detectable molecular gas- offers a unique opportunity for high angular resolution studies of the interstellar medium in early-type galaxies. I present interferometric images (17 pc $\times$ 14 pc resolution) of CO emission from NGC 185. The majority of the molecular gas in NGC 185 is in one resolved cloud, closely associated with dust and an HI structure which may be a photodissociated envelope. The high spatial resolution also reveals a velocity gradient across the cloud, which allows a dynamical mass estimate independent…
We report a dynamical determination of the separate contributions of disk and dark halo masses to the rotation curve of a spiral galaxy. We use fluid-dynamical models of gas flow in the barred galaxy NGC 4123 to constrain the dynamical properties of the galaxy: disk M/L, bar pattern speed, and the central density and scale radius of the dark halo. We derive a realistic barred potential directly from the light distribution. For each model we assume a value of the stellar M/L and a bar pattern speed Omega_p and add a dark halo to fit the rotation curve. We then compute the gas flow velocities wi…
We determine the mass of the black hole at the center of the spiral galaxy NGC 4258 by constructing axisymmetric dynamical models of the galaxy. These models are constrained by high spatial resolution imaging and long-slit spectroscopy of the nuclear region obtained with the {\em Hubble Space Telescope}, complemented by ground-based observations extending to larger radii. Our best mass estimate is $\MBH = (3.3 \pm 0.2) \times 10^7 \MSun $ for a distance of 7.28 Mpc (statistical errors only). This is within 15% of $ (3.82\pm 0.01) \times 10^7 \MSun$, the mass determined from the kinematics of w…
In this talk I will summarize some of the work that the CfA group has done to study the structure of the water masers in the accretion disk of NGC 4258. A series of 18 epochs of VLBA data taken from 1997.3 to 2000.8 were used for this study. The vertical distribution of maser features in the systemic group was found to have a Gaussian distribution, as expected for hydrostatic equilibrium, with a $σ$-width of 5.1 $μ$as. If the disk is in hydrostatic equilibrium, its temperature is about 600K. The systemic features exhibit a small, but persistent, gradient in acceleration versus impact parameter…
We have used high resolution WFPC2-HST and ground based Wide Field images to determine the center of gravity and construct an extended radial density and brightness profile of the cluster NGC 6752 including, for the first time, detailed star counts in the very inner region. The barycenter of the 9 innermost X-ray sources detected by Chandra is located only 1.9" off the new center of gravity. Both the density and the brightness profile of the central region are best fitted by a double King model, suggesting that NGC 6752 is experiencing a post-core collapse "bounce". Taking advantage from our n…
Recent observations of globular clusters (GCs) in intermediate-age (2-4 Gyr old), early-type merger remnants have provided the hitherto `missing link' between young merger remnants and `normal' elliptical galaxies in the form of a GC subsystem with colors and luminosities consistent with population synthesis model predictions for those ages and ~solar metallicity. Here we present new, deep observations of the GC system of the intermediate-age merger remnant NGC 1316, using the ACS camera aboard Hubble Space Telescope, which allowed us to create luminosity functions (LFs) as a function of galac…
Recent results from the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph (PN.S) survey have revealed a rapidly falling velocity dispersion profile in the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 3379, casting doubts on whether this intermediate-luminosity galaxy has the kind of dark matter halo expected in LambdaCDM cosmology. We present a detailed dynamical study of this galaxy, combining long-slit spectroscopy, SAURON integral-field data, and PN.S velocities, reaching to more than seven effective radii (R_e). We construct spherical and axisymmetric dynamical models for these data with the flexible made-to-measure NMAGIC c…
We use a combination of new AAOmega multi-object wide-field spectroscopic observations and literature data to define 111 spectroscopically confirmed members of the massive NGC 5044 group with M_B <= -13.5 mag, providing a three-fold increase in group members over previous analyses of this group. We find the group to have a dynamical mass of 9.2 x 10^13 solar masses, placing it on the border between rich groups and poor clusters. However, comparison to the L_x-sigma and L_x-mass relations shows it more closely follows cluster scaling relations. Using a combination of crossing time, X-ray contou…
We present a new approach for calculating the physical properties of highly ionized X-ray flows in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our method relies on a detailed treatment of the structure, dynamics and spectrum of the gas. A quantitative comparison of our model predictions with the 900 ksec Chandra/HETG X-ray spectrum of NGC 3783 shows that: (1) The highly ionized outflow is driven by thermal pressure gradients and radiation pressure force is less important. (2) A full featured dynamical model that provides a very good fit to the high resolution X-ray spectrum requires a multi-phased flow with…
NGC 4438 is a highly perturbed spiral with a stellar tidal tail and extraplanar molecular gas, now very HI deficient, crossing the center of the Virgo cluster at high speed. Various authors have attributed the perturbed appearance to the ram pressure of the intracluster medium, the tidal interaction with NGC 4435, and an ISM-ISM collision between the ISM of NGC 4438 and NGC 4435. We present new CO observations covering virtually all of NGC 4438 and the center of NGC 4435 and detailed simulations including all of the above effects. For the first time CO is detected in NGC 4435. In NGC 4438 we f…
We present a study of high-resolution long-slit spectra of the narrow-line region (NLR) in NGC 1068 obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard The Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The spectra were retrieved from the Multimission Archive at Space Telescope (MAST) obtained from two visits and seven orbits of HST time. We also obtained MERLIN radio maps of the center of NGC 1068 to examine the dependence of the NLR cloud velocities on the radio structure. The radial velocities and velocity dispersions of the bright NLR clouds appear to be unaffected by the radio knots, indi…
We present a set of detailed, self-consistent, isotropic dynamical models for disc galaxies. We start from the hypothesis that each galaxy can be decomposed in a bulge, following the r^{1/4} law, and a disc with an exponential projected density profile; and that the isodensity surfaces of each component can be represented by similar concentric spheroids. Under these conditions we produce the rotational velocity and velocity dispersion profiles, after taking into account both the asymmetric drift effects and the integration along the line of sight. The model is successfully applied to reproduce…
We present V-band surface photometry and major-axis kinematics of stars and ionized gas of three early-type spiral galaxies, namely NGC 772, NGC 3898 and NGC 7782. For each galaxy we present a self-consistent Jeans model for the stellar kinematics, adopting the light distribution of bulge and disc derived by means of a two-dimensional parametric photometric decomposition. This allowed us to investigate the presence of non-circular gas motions, and derive the mass distribution of luminous and dark matter in these objects. NGC 772 and NGC 7782 have apparently normal kinematics with the ionized g…
We present new dynamical models of the S0 galaxy N3115, making use of the available published photometry and kinematics as well as of two-dimensional TIGER spectrography. We first examined the kinematics in the central 40 arcsec in the light of two integral f(E,J) models. Jeans equations were used to constrain the mass to light ratio, and the central dark mass whose existence was suggested by previous studies. The even part of the distribution function was then retrieved via the Hunter & Qian formalism. We thus confirmed that the velocity and dispersion profiles in the central region could be …
We present a stellar dynamical estimate of the black hole (BH) mass in the Seyfert 1 galaxy, NGC 4151. We analyze ground-based spectroscopy as well as imaging data from the ground and space, and we construct 3-integral axisymmetric models in order to constrain the BH mass and mass-to-light ratio. The dynamical models depend on the assumed inclination of the kinematic symmetry axis of the stellar bulge. In the case where the bulge is assumed to be viewed edge-on, the kinematical data give only an upper limit to the mass of the BH of ~4e7 M_sun (1 sigma). If the bulge kinematic axis is assumed t…
Multiwavelength data for Stephan's Quintet (SQ) are consistent with the following model for this compact galaxy group. (1) Discordant redshift NGC 7320 is an unrelated foreground galaxy. (2) In the past SQ was an accordant redshift quartet involving NGC 7317, 18A, 19 and 20C. NGC 7320C collided (probably not for the first time) with the group a few times 10$^8$ years ago and stripped the interstellar matter from NGC 7319. (3) In the present SQ is again an accordant quartet involving NGC 7317, 18A,B, and 19. NGC 7318B is now entering the group at high velocity for the first time, giving rise to…
NGC 3621 is a late-type (Sd) spiral galaxy with an active nucleus, previously detected through mid-infrared [Ne V] line emission. Archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images reveal that the galaxy contains a bright and compact nuclear star cluster. We present a new high-resolution optical spectrum of this nuclear cluster, obtained with the ESI Spectrograph at the Keck Observatory. The nucleus has a Seyfert 2 emission-line spectrum at optical wavelengths, supporting the hypothesis that a black hole is present. The line-of-sight stellar velocity dispersion of the cluster is sigma=43+/-3 km/s, o…
We have determined the dynamical mass of the most luminous stellar cluster known to date, i.e. object W3 in the merger remnant galaxy NGC 7252. The dynamical mass is estimated from the velocity dispersion measured with the high-resolution spectrograph UVES on VLT. Our result is the astonishingly high velocity dispersion of sigma=45 +- 5 km/s. Combined with the large cluster size R_eff=17.5 +-1.8 pc, this translates into a dynamical virial mass for W3 of 8 +- 2 x 10^7 Msun. This mass is in excellent agreement with the value 7.2 x 10^7 Msun we previously estimated from the cluster luminosity M_V…
A dynamical model including ram pressure stripping is applied to the strongly HI deficient Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4522. A carefully chosen model snapshot is compared with existing VLA HI observations. The model successfully reproduces the large-scale gas distribution and the velocity field. However it fails to reproduce the large observed HI linewidths in the extraplanar component, for which we give possible explanations. In a second step, we solve the induction equation on the velocity fields of the dynamical model and calculate the large scale magnetic field. Assuming a Gaussian distributio…
We present the detailed analysis of Hubble Space Telescope observations of the spatial distributions of different stellar species in two young compact star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud, NGC 1805 and NGC 1818. Based on a comparison of the characteristic relaxation times in their cores and at their half-mass radii with the observed degree of mass segregation, it is most likely that significant primordial mass segregation was present in both clusters, particularly in NGC 1805. Both clusters were likely formed with very similar initial mass functions.
We present the results of dust continuum and molecular line observations of two massive cluster-forming clumps, NGC 2264-C and NGC 2264-D, including extensive mapping performed with the MAMBO bolometer array and the HERA heterodyne array on the IRAM 30m telescope. Both NGC 2264 clumps are located in the Mon OB1 giant molecular cloud complex, adjacent to one another. Twelve and fifteen compact millimeter continuum sources (i.e. MMSs) are identified in clumps C and D, respectively. Evidence for widespread infall motions is found in, e.g., HCO+(3-2) or CS(3-2) in both NGC 2264-C and NGC 2264-D. A…
We examine the local stability of galactic discs against axisymmetric density perturbations with special attention to the different dynamics of the stellar and gaseous components. In particular the discs of the Milky Way and of NGC 6946 are studied. The Milky Way is shown to be stable, whereas the inner parts of NGC 6946, a typical Sc galaxy from the Kennicutt (1989) sample, are dynamically unstable. The ensuing dynamical evolution of the composite disc is studied by numerical simulations. The evolution is so fierce that the stellar disc heats up dynamically on a short time scale to such a deg…
A 40 ks \emph{Chandra} ACIS-S observation of the dynamically young cluster A1367 yields new insights on X-ray emission from cluster member galaxies. We detect 59 point-like sources in the ACIS field, of which 8 are identified with known cluster member galaxies. Thus, in total 10 member galaxies are detected in X-rays when three galaxies discussed in paper I (Sun & Murray 2002; NGC 3860 is discussed in both papers) are included. The superior spatial resolution and good spectroscopy capability of \chandra allow us to constrain the emission nature of these galaxies. Central nuclei, thermal halos …
We have used multi-band high resolution HST WFPC2 and ACS observations combined with wide field ground-based observations to study the blue straggler star (BSS) population in the galactic globular cluster NGC 6388. As in several other clusters we have studied, the BSS distribution is found to be bimodal: highly peaked in the cluster center, rapidly decreasing at intermediate radii, and rising again at larger radii. In other clusters the sparsely populated intermediate-radius region (or ``zone of avoidance'') corresponds well to that part of the cluster where dynamical friction would have cause…
We performed SPH simulations to study the nuclear morphology of a barred galaxy NGC 4314. We have constructed the mass models based on the results of a profile decomposition into disk, bulge, and bar components. Our models have three different nuclear structures according to the assumption about the nuclear bar: no nuclear bar, a synchronous nuclear bar and a fast nuclear bar. Our SPH simulations show that the morphology of the nuclear region of NGC 4314 which is characterized by an elongated ring/spiral of newly formed stars and HII regions, aligned nearly parallel to the primary bar can be u…
The Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope has been used to obtain deep high-resolution images of the giant early-type galaxy NGC 1316 which is an obvious merger remnant. These observations supersede previous, shallower observations which revealed the presence of a population of metal-rich globular clusters of intermediate age (~ 3 Gyr). We detect a total of 1496 cluster candidates, almost 4 times as many as from the previous WFPC2 images. We confirm the bimodality of the color distribution of clusters, even in V-I, with peak colors 0.93 and 1.06. The large number of d…
We present high resolution (~5'') maps of the J = 1 - 0 transitions of ^{13}CO and C^{18}O towards the nucleus of NGC 6946, made with the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. The images are compared with existing ^{12}CO(1-0) maps to investigate localized changes in gas properties across the nucleus. As compared to ^{12}CO, both ^{13}CO and C^{18}O are more confined to the central ring of molecular gas associated with the nuclear star formation; that is, ^{12}CO is stronger relative to ^{13}CO and C^{18}O away from the nucleus and along the spiral arms. The ^{12}CO(1-0)/^{13}CO(1-0) line ratio reach…
Recent high-resolution observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) reveal that star clusters of extraordinary luminosity and compactness are commonly found in a variety of starburst systems. There has been much speculation that these clusters represent present-day analogs of young globular clusters. Using the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck 10 m telescope, we obtained high-dispersion optical spectra of one of the ``super star clusters'' (cluster ``A'') in the nearby dwarf galaxy NGC 1569. The size of the cluster is known from published HST images. The line-of-sight velocity dispe…
We have used 2D Fabry-Perot absorption-line spectroscopy of the SB0 galaxy NGC 7079 to measure its bar pattern speed, $\om$. As in all previous cases of bar pattern speed measurements, we find a fast bar. We estimate that NGC 7079 has been undisturbed for at least the past Gyr or roughly 8 bar rotations, long enough for the bar to have slowed down significantly through dynamical friction if the disk is sub-maximal.
We combine Hubble Space Telescope spectroscopy and ground-based integral-field data from the SAURON and OASIS instruments to study the central black hole in the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 3379. From these data, we obtain kinematics of both the stars and the nuclear gaseous component. Axisymmetric three-integral models of the stellar kinematics find a black hole of mass 1.4 (+2.6 / -1.0) x 10^8 M_sun (3 sigma errors). These models also probe the velocity distribution in the immediate vicinity of the black hole and reveal a nearly isotropic velocity distribution throughout the galaxy and down …
We present an observational and theoretical study of the spiral structure in galaxy NGC 1566. A digitized image of NGC 1566 in I-band was used for measurements of the radial dependence of amplitude variations in the spiral arms. We use the known velocity dispersion in the disk of NGC 1566, together with its rotation curve, to construct linear and 2D nonlinear simulations which are then compared with observations. A two-armed spiral is the most unstable linear global mode in the disk of NGC 1566. The nonlinear simulations are in agreement with the results of the linear modal analysis, and the t…
We have conducted a $UBVRI$ and $H_α$ CCD photometry of 5 barred galaxies, NGC 2523, NGC 2950, NGC 3412, NGC 3945 and NGC 5383, along with SPH simulations, in order to understand the origin of young stellar populations in the nuclei of barred galaxies. The $H_α$ emissions which are thought to be emitted by young stellar populations are either absent or strongly concentrated on the nuclei of early type galaxies (NGC 2950, NGC 3412, NGC 3945), while they are observed in the nuclei and circumnuclear regions of intermediate type galaxies with strong bars (NGC 2523, NGC 5383). SPH simulations of re…
We present dynamical models based on a study of high-resolution long-slit spectra of the narrow-line region (NLR) in NGC 1068 obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard The Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The dynamical models consider the radiative force due to the active galactic nucleus (AGN), gravitational forces from the supermassive black hole (SMBH), nuclear stellar cluster, and galactic bulge, and a drag force due to the NLR clouds interacting with a hot ambient medium. The derived velocity profile of the NLR gas is compared to that obtained from our previous kin…
Double bars have been proposed as a means of transporting molecular gas past inner Lindblad resonances into the nuclear regions, where it can fuel active or starburst nuclei. Thus far, the existence of double bars has been determined predominantly through analysis of near infrared images, which can tell us little about the dynamics and inflow rates of these systems. We have observed two double bar galaxy candidates (NGC 2273 and NGC 5728) in CO J=1-0 with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Millimeter Array. Despite the similarity in the near infrared images of these galaxies, we see rather dif…
The dynamical evolution of the recently detected stellar group Mamajek 2 is studied by means of its past 3D orbit. The past orbits of the open clusters NGC 2516 and $α$ Persei, belonging to the so-called "Local Association", were also computed in order to check for a possible common past dynamical evolution of these systems. To complete the data of the Mamajek 2 small group, we have obtained high resolution FEROS spectra to measure the radial and also the projected rotational velocities of its members; an estimate of its metallicity was obtained as well. Two exceptionally low rotating A-type s…
The earliest phases of massive star formation in clusters are still poorly understood. Here, we test the hypothesis for high-mass star formation proposed in our earlier paper (Peretto et al. 2006). In order to confirm the physical validity of this hypothesis, we carried out IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer observations of NGC 2264-C and performed SPH numerical simulations of the collapse of a Jeans-unstable, prolate dense clump. Our Plateau de Bure observations reveal the presence of a new compact source (C-MM13) located only \~ 10000 AU away, but separated by ~ 1.1 km/s in (projected) velo…
We describe a non-parametric method for determining both the anisotropy and mass profiles of elliptical galaxies from velocity dispersions and velocity profile shapes along the line of sight. In this way, mass-to-light ratios out to 2-3 effective radii can be derived from stellar absorption line spectroscopy. We discuss two illustrative cases, NGC 1399 and NGC 6703. So far, all ellipticals which have been analysed show evidence for dark matter dominating in the outer parts. The circular velocity curves are nearly flat, as in spiral galaxies.
We describe a technique that uses radial color gradients in disk galaxies to detect the presence of bulk non-circular motion or elliptical orbits. In a disk galaxy with both a radial color gradient and non-circular motion, isochromes or iso-color contours should follow the shape of closed stellar orbits, and the ellipticity of the isophotes should vary as a function of wavelength. A difference in the ellipticity of isochromes and the isophotes can be used to detect the presence of non-circular motion. A model galaxy is constructed which demonstrates this phenomenon. The difference between isoc…
Motivated by recent neutral hydrogen observations with the VLA, we have undertaken an investigation into the interaction that produced the well known merger remnant NGC 7252. Through fully self-consistent N-body simulations, we are able to reproduce the kinematic character of the HI observations quite well, including the velocity reversals observed along each tidal tail. In the simulation these reversals arise from particles which have turned around in their orbit and are moving to smaller radii. The bases of the tails fall back quickly to small pericentric distances, while the more distant re…
