We consider the application of regularization by dimensional reduction to NLO corrections of hadronic processes. The general collinear singularity structure is discussed, the origin of the regularization-scheme dependence is identified and transition rules to other regularization schemes are derived.
We discuss how to apply regularization by dimensional reduction for computing hadronic cross sections at next-to-leading order. We analyze the infrared singularity structure, demonstrate that there are no problems with factorization, and show how to use dimensional reduction in conjunction with standard parton distribution functions. We clarify that different versions of dimensional reduction with different infrared and factorization behaviour have been used in the literature. Finally, we give transition rules for translating the various parts of next-to-leading order cross sections from dimen…
We investigate the single-spin asymmetries in inclusive and exclusive processes of electron-proton scattering and electron-positron annihilation. In the decomposition of hadronic tensor, a Lorentz symmetric spin-dependent term is generally present. The existence of such a term implies single-spin asymmetries in these processes and these single-spin asymmetries for baryons can be understood in a unified manner. We argue that it is important to measure the single-spin asymmetries in both inclusive and exclusive processes for the $Λ$ production at the present B-factories. This will lead to the fi…
A low constituent number scheme based on the nontrivial gluon string splitting (the Zip--model) is shown to yield a substantial intermittency for soft hadronic processes. With a simplest addition of the Bose--Einstein correlations the remarkable agreement with the NA22 experimental data on rapidity factorial moments is reached.
Recent works have discussed the violation of factorization and universality in hadronic hard scattering processes aimed at measurements of T-odd distributions. We use simple arguments to show that it is possible to restore an approximate factorization involving T-odd contributions if the factorization breaking interactions present a frequency spectrum dominated by by a narrow and regular peak whose maximum value corresponds to a respected factorization.
In this talk I present the total cross sections, accurate at the NLO in QCD, for rare Standard-Model hadroproduction processes involving multi-Higgs-boson, multi-electroweak-boson and multi-top-quark final states. The comparison between cross sections at the LHC and at a future circular hadronic collider with up to 100 TeV centre-of-mass energy is detailed. Results relevant to the hadronic production of five electroweak bosons, and of a top-antitop pair in association with an electroweak vector boson and two jets are presented here for the first time with NLO accuracy.
In this thesis we study two processes in which instantons may play an important role: the decays of charmonium states $η_c$, $χ_c$ and glueball and the OZI violation in channels relevant to the proton spin decomposition puzzle. We also present an algorithm for computation of integrals over compact groups and exemplify it on integrals over SU(N) fundamental and adjoint representations.
High energy hadronic scattering processes can be described in terms of partonic scattering processes and parton distribution and fragmentation functions. These are bilocal matrix elements of quark operators. Colour gauge-invariance requires inclusion of a gauge link, which is characterized by its path. For transverse momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions, appearing in single spin asymmetries, different paths appear depending on the process. The difference is related to a time-reversal odd gluonic pole matrix element. We discuss briefly the path structure of the gauge link…
The concept of the structure of the photon is discussed and the progress in the measurement of various structure functions of the photon as well of parton distributions in the photon is shortly reviewed.
I describe a subtraction scheme for the next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of single inclusive production at hadron colliders. Such processes include Drell-Yan, W^{+/-}, Z and Higgs Boson production. The key to such a calculation is a treatment of initial state radiation which preserves the production characteristics, such as the rapidity distribution, of the process involved. The method builds upon the Dipole Formalism and, with proper modifications, could be applied to deep inelastic scattering and e^+ e^- annihilation to hadrons.
Processes with oppositely charged spinor particles in initial and/or final states in homogeneous magnetic field B are subject to focusing effects in their relative motion, which yield the amplifying factors in probabilities growing as $eB$. In addition the increasing energy of some Landau levels influences the phase space. As a result some processes in the proper spin states can be enlarged as $\sim \frac{eB}{κ^2}$, where $κ^2$ is the characteristic 2d phase space factor available without magnetic field. Several examples, including neutron $β$ decay, positronium decay and $e^+e^-$ pair product…
We describe a general approach to quark flavor tagging in polarized hadronic processes, with particular emphasis on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. A formalism is introduced that allows one to relate chosen quark flavor polarizations to an arbitrary combination of final-state hadron spin asymmetries. Within the context of the presented formalism, we quantify the sensitivity of various semi-inclusive hadron asymmetries to the light quark flavors. We show that unpolarized Lambda's may allow one to measure strange quark and antiquark polarizations independently. We also highlight severa…
The hadronic corrections to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, due to the full gauge-invariant set of diagrams with dynamical quark loop and intermediate pseudoscalar and scalar states light-by-light scattering insertions, are calculated in the framework of the nonlocal chiral quark model. These diagrams correspond to all hadronic light-by-light scattering contributions to $a_μ$ in the leading order of the $1/N_{c}$ expansion in quark model. The result for the quark loop contribution is $a_μ^{\mathrm{HLbL,Loop}}=\left( 11.0\pm0.9\right) \cdot10^{-10}$, and the total result is $a_μ^{\mathrm{HL…
In this note we address the issue of measurability of the hadronic cross-sections at a future photon collider as well as for the two-photon processes at a future high energy linear $e^+e^-$ collider. We extend, to higher energy, our previous estimates of the accuracy with which the \gamgam\ cross-section needs to be measured, in order to distinguish between different theoretical models of energy dependence of the total cross-sections. We show that the necessary precision to discriminate among these models is indeed possible at future linear colliders in the Photon Collider option. Further we n…
The Global Colour Model (GCM) of QCD is a quark-gluon quantum field theory that very successfully models QCD for low energy hadronic processes. An effective gluon correlator models the interaction between quark currents. Functional integral calculus allows the GCM to be hadronised (i.e. expressed in terms of meson and baryon fields). The dominant configuration of the hadronic functional integrals is revealed to be the constituent quark effect, and is identical to one version of the truncated quark Dyson-Schwinger equations (tDSE). However the GCM shows that hadronic physics requires processes …
We study the azimuthal asymmetry in the Drell-Yan lepton pair production in hadronic scattering processes at moderate transverse momentum region, taking into account the contributions from the twist-three quark-gluon correlations from the unpolarized hadrons. The contributions are found to dominate the asymmetry, and are not power suppressed by q_\perp/Q at small q_\perp where q_\perp and Q are the transverse momentum and invariant mass of the lepton pair. Accordingly, the Lam-Tung relation will be violated at this momentum region, and its violation depends on the twist-three functions. Howeve…
Although no asymptotic heavy quark spin symmetry, and even more no flavor symmetry, are expected for systems such as quarkonium, a numerical discussion shows that for some processes and in a preasymptotic region which may roughly include charmonium and bottomonium, the use of the spin-symmetry may be useful in conjunction with chiral symmetry for light hadrons (soft-exchange- approximation regime, SEA). We continue our discussion of hadronic transitions in the SEA-regime by studying in particular chiral breaking transitions such as $~^3P' \to ~^3Pπ^0$, $~^3Pη$, level splittings and transitions…
The QCD improved parton model is a very successful concept to treat processes in hadronic interactions, whenever large partonic transverse momenta are involved. However, cross sections diverge in the limit p_T -> 0, and the usual treatment is the definition of a lower cutoff p_T_min, such that processes with a smaller p_T -- so-called soft processes -- are simply ignored, which is certainly not correct for example at RHIC energies. A more consistent procedure amounts to introduce a technical parameter Q_0^2, referred to as soft virtuality scale, which is nothing but an artificial borderline be…
We consider the hadronic radiation patterns for the generic process of bb + 2 forward jet production at the LHC, where the (centrally produced) bb originate either from a Higgs, a Z or from standard QCD production processes. A numerical technique for evaluating the radiation patterns for non-trivial final states is introduced and shown to agree with the standard analytic results for more simple processes. Significant differences between the radiation patterns for the Higgs signal and the background processes are observed and quantified. This suggests that hadronic radiation patterns could be u…
We study elelctroweak penguin contributions in pure hadronic $B$ decays in the Standard and two-Higgs-doublet models. We find that in $B_s\rightarrow π^0 (η\;, ϕ)$ and $B_s\rightarrow ρ^0 (η\;, ϕ)$ decays, the electroweak penguin contributions dominate over all other contribuitons. These processes provide unique signatures of electroweak penguin in pure hadronic processes. These modes could be in measureable range of future $B$ facilities.
We show that an endpoint overlap model can explain the scaling laws observed in exclusive hadronic reactions at large momentum transfer. The model assumes one of the valence quarks carries most of the hadron momentum. Hadron form factors and fixed angle scattering are related directly to the quark wave function, which can be directly extracted from experimental data. A universal linear endpoint behavior explains the proton electromagnetic form factor, proton-proton fixed angle scattering, and the t-dependence of proton-proton scattering at large s>>t. Endpoint constituent counting rules relate…
In the Drell-Yan process (DY) a quark and an antiquark, coming from two different protons, produce a colorless virtual photon. In the proton description, we include transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs), which go beyond the ordinary collinear PDFs. As such, we become sensitive to polarization modes of the partons and protons that one cannot probe without accounting for transverse momenta of partons, in particular when one looks at azimuthal asymmetries. Matrix elements used in the description of hadronic processes, such as DY, require the inclusion of gauge lin…
Two-photon exchange contributions to elastic electron-scattering are reviewed. The apparent discrepancy in the extraction of elastic nucleon form factors between unpolarized Rosenbluth and polarization transfer experiments is discussed, as well as the understanding of this puzzle in terms of two-photon exchange corrections. Calculations of such corrections both within partonic and hadronic frameworks are reviewed. In view of recent spin-dependent electron scattering data, the relation of the two-photon exchange process to the hyperfine splitting in hydrogen is critically examined. The imaginar…
The inclusion of electromagnetism in a low energy effective theory is worth further study in view of the present high precision experiments (muon g-2, pi_0->2 gamma, tau decays, etc.). In particular in many applications of chiral perturbation theory, one has to purify physical matrix elements from electromagnetic effects. The theoretical problems that I want to point out here are following: the splitting of a pure QCD and a pure electromagnetic part in a hadronic process is model dependent: is it possible to parametrise in a clear way this splitting? What kind of information (scale dependence,…
We present a generalized QCD factorization scheme for the high energy inclusive polarized process, (A, S_A) + (B, S_B) -> C + X, including all intrinsic partonic motions. This introduces many non-trivial azimuthal phases and several new spin and k_T dependent soft functions. The formal expressions for single and double spin asymmetries are discussed. Numerical results for A_N[p(transv. polarized) p -> pi + X] are presented.
It is shown using Lund Monte Carlo that, unlike the average properties of the hadronic system inside jets, the anisotropy of dynamical fluctuations in these systems changes abruptly with the variation of the cut parameter $y_cut$. A transition point exists, where the dynamical fluctuations in the hadronic system inside jet behave like those in soft hadronic collisions. Thus the anisotropy property of the dynamical fluctuations can serve as a probe for the soft and hard processes in high energy collisions.
We propose a possible scheme for getting the known QCD scaling laws within string theory. In particular, we consider amplitudes for exclusive scattering of hadrons at large momentum transfer, hadronic form factors and distribution functions.
The role of intrinsic transverse momentum both in unpolarized and polarized processes is discussed. We consider inclusive cross sections for pion production in hadronic collisions and for Drell-Yan processes; the results are compared with available experimental data in several different kinematical situations. We reanalyze transverse single spin asymmetries (SSA) observed in inclusive pion production, p(transv. polarized) p --> pion + X, in terms of Sivers effect and show how it can be disentangled in polarized Drell-Yan processes by suitably integrating over some final configurations. Estimat…
The availability of computational modeling tools for subatomic physics (Form, FeynArts, FormCalc, and FeynCalc) has made it possible to perform sophisticated calculations in perturbative quantum field theory. We have adapted these packages in order to apply them to the effective chiral field theory of hadronic interactions. A detailed description of this Computational Hadronic Model is presented here, along with sample calculations.
Hadronic tau decays belong to the processes that show a resonance-like structure in the axial vector current in the $1-2$ GeV range. This structure, often denoted as the $a_1$ meson, seems to show different properties in different processes. The process $τ\rightarrow 3πν_τ$ allows for a clean separation of weak and strong effects and a clear production mechanism. We examine how this structure can be related to interactions between the three pions that emerge in the final state. In particular we start from the interactions between all two body combinations.
Recently the development of chiral perturbation theory has allowed the generation of rigorous low-energy theorems for various hadronic processes based only on the chiral invariance of the underlying QCD Lagrangian. Herein we examine the experimental implications of chiral symmetry in the regime of electroweak Goldstone boson interactions. Contribution to BNL Hadronic Beam Physics Workshop.
Hadronic radiation provides a tool to distinguish different topologies of colour flow in hard scattering processes. We study the structure of hadronic flow corresponding to Higgs production and decay in high-energy hadron-hadron collisions. In particular, the signal gg -> H -> b anti-b and background gg -> b anti-b processes are shown to have very different radiation patterns, and this may provide an useful additional method for distinguishing Higgs signal events from the QCD background.
In quantum field theory, the splitting of the Hamiltonian into a strong and an electromagnetic part cannot be performed in a unique manner. We propose a convention for disentangling these two effects: one matches the parameters of two theories -- with and without electromagnetic interactions -- at a given scale mu_1, referred to as the matching scale. This procedure enables one to analyze the separation of strong and electromagnetic contributions in a transparent manner. We illustrate the method -- in the framework of the loop expansion -- in a Yukawa model, as well as in the linear sigma mode…
The production of the charmonium states in hadronic experiments is considered in NLO at the strong coupling constant. It is shown, that such an approach solves some significant problems, arising when only leading order processes are considered. In particular, in such a consideration distributions over the transverse momentum of the final charmonium can be obtained. There appears also a natural explanation to the existence of $χ_{c1}$-meson in final state, that is observed experimentally and cannot be produced in leading order processes.
The role of intrinsic transverse momentum both in unpolarized and polarized processes is discussed. We consider inclusive cross sections for pion production in hadronic collisions and for Drell-Yan processes. We reanalyze transverse single spin asymmetries (SSA) in inclusive pion production, p(transv. polarized) p --> pion + X, in terms of Sivers effect and show its contribution to A_{UL} in semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS).
In this note we address the issue of theoretical estimates of the hadronic cross-sections for \gamgam processes. We compare the predictions of the minijet model with data as well as other models, highlighting the band of uncertainties in the theoretical predictions as well as those in the final values of the $σ(\gamgam \go {\rm hadrons})$ extracted from the data. We find that the rise of $σ_{γγ}^{\rm tot}$ with energy shown in the latest \gamgam data is in tune with the faster rise expected in the Eikonal Minijet Models (EMM). We present an estimate of the accuracy with which this cross-sectio…
In this work we investigate the hadronic effects on the $X_{J=0,1} (2900)$ states in heavy-ion collisions. We make use of Effective Lagrangians to estimate the cross sections and their thermal averages of the processes $X_J π\to \bar{D}^{*} K , K^{*} \bar{D} $, as well as those of the corresponding inverse processes, considering also the possibility of different isospin assignments ($I=0,1$). We complete the analysis by solving the rate equation to follow the time evolution of the $X_J (2900)$ multiplicities and determine how they are affected by the considered reactions during the expansion o…
Hadronic diffractive processes characterised by a hard scale (hard diffraction) contain a nontrivial interplay of hard and soft, nonperturbative interactions, which breaks down factorisation of short and long distances. On the contrary to the expectations based on the factorization hypothesis, assuming that hard diffraction is a higher twist, these processes should be classified as a leading twist. We overview various implications of this important observation for diffractive radiation of Abelian (Drell-Yan, gauge bosons, Higgs boson) and non-Abelian (heavy flavors) particles, as well as direc…
We discuss high-pT production processes at forward rapidities in hadron-hadron collisions, and describe recent results from using QCD high-energy factorization in forward jet production at the LHC.
In this presentation, we describe the computation of higher-order QED effects relevant in hadronic collisions. In particular, we discuss the calculation of mixed QCD-QED one-loop contributions to the Altarelli-Parisi splittings functions, as well as the pure two-loop QED corrections. We explain how to extend the DGLAP equations to deal with new parton distributions, emphasizing the consequences of the novel corrections in the determination (and evolution) of the photon distributions.
We study the $K^*$ meson reduction in heavy ion collisions by focusing on the hadronic effects on the $K^*$ meson abundance. We evaluate the absorption cross sections of the $K^*$ and $K$ meson by light mesons in the hadronic matter, and further investigate the variation in the meson abundances for both particles during the hadronic stage of heavy ion collisions. We show how the interplay between the interaction of the $K^*$ meson and kaon with light mesons in the hadronic medium determines the final yield difference of the statistical hadronization model to the experimental measurements. For …
Non-linear effects in hadronic interactions are treated by means of enhanced pomeron diagrams, assuming that pomeron-pomeron coupling is dominated by soft partonic processes. It is shown that the approach allows to resolve a seeming contradiction between realistic parton momentum distributions, measured in deep inelastic scattering experiments, and the energy behavior of total proton-proton cross section. Also a general consistency with both ``soft'' and ``hard'' diffraction data is demonstrated. An important feature of the proposed scheme is that the contribution of semi-hard processes to the…
We show that any determination of the strong coupling $α_s$ from a process which depends on parton distributions, such as hadronic processes or deep-inelastic scattering, generally does not lead to a correct result unless the parton distributions (PDFs) are determined simultaneously along with $α_s$. We establish the result by first showing an explicit example, and then arguing that the example is representative of a generic situation which we explain using models for the shape of equal $χ^2$ contours in the joint space of $α_s$ and the PDF parameters.
A serious computational problem in the evaluation of hadronic collision processes is connected with the large number of partonic subprocesses included in the calculation. These are from the quark and gluon content of the initial hadrons, and from CKM quark mixing. For example, there are 180 subprocesses which contribute to the $W$+2jets process, and 292 subprocesses in $W$+3jets production at the LHC, even when quarks from only the first two generations are taken into account. We propose a simple modification of the rules for evaluation of cross sections and distributions, which avoids multipl…
T-odd parton distribution functions in a Drell-Yan process are here studied by examining the evolution of the internal statistical properties of the interacting hadrons. T-odd functions are shown to be a signature of the irreversible process in which a hadronic state characterized by long range correlation properties (hadronic phase) decays to produce a cloud of independent partons (partonic phase) because of initial/final state interactions. The relevant considered variable is the rate of increase of the entropy of the hadronic system. This quantity is shown to be roughly equal to the decay r…
We propose a method of extracting the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ from two-body hadronic decay processes of $B\to DK$ with precisely determined form factors of $B$ meson semi-leptonic decays. The amplitude $\mathcal{M}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^+ K^-)$ which does not include the effect of hadronic final state interactions can be theoretically evaluated by using factorization and form factors of semi-leptonic B decays. We can obtain all the amplitudes in an isospin relation $\mathcal{A}(B^-\to D^0K^-) =\mathcal{A}(\bar{B}^0\to D^+K^{-})+\mathcal{A}(\bar{B}^0\to D^{0}\bar{K}^0)$ in…
We present evidence for small oscillations we observe in electron-positron and proton-antiproton annihilation data, with a periodicity of 76+-2 MeV, independent of the beam energy. We discuss some possible scenarios to explain the phenomenon.
In the framework of nonlocal light-cone expansion of two current operators we construct bilocal as well as trilocal QCD light-cone operators with definite geometric twist. We are able to decompose uniquely the appearing QCD light-cone operators into all their twist parts on the light-cone. The quark distribution functions and the vector meson distribution amplitudes which are defined as forward and skewed nucleonic matrix elements of nonlocal light-cone operators are classified with respect to geometric twist. Hereby we found well-kown and new Wandzura-Wilczek type relations between the quark …
We extend the multi-purpose Monte-Carlo event generator Sherpa to include processes in deeply inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering. Hadronic final states in this kinematical setting are characterised by the presence of multiple kinematical scales, which were up to now accounted for only by specific resummations in individual kinematical regions. Using an extension of the recently introduced method for merging truncated parton showers with higher-order tree-level matrix elements, it is possible to obtain predictions which are reliable in all kinematical limits. Different hadronic final states, d…
In this paper, for the first time a method is proposed to compute electromagnetic effects in hadronic processes using lattice simulations. The method can be applied, for example, to the leptonic and semileptonic decays of light or heavy pseudoscalar mesons. For these quantities the presence of infrared divergences in intermediate stages of the calculation makes the procedure much more complicated than is the case for the hadronic spectrum, for which calculations already exist. In order to compute the physical widths, diagrams with virtual photons must be combined with those corresponding to th…
Recent BELLE measurements provide the cross section for single hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations, differential in thrust and in the hadron transverse momentum with respect to the thrust axis. Universality breaking effects due to process-dependent soft factors make it very difficult to relate this cross sections to those corresponding to hadron-pair production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations, where transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization can be applied. The correspondence between these two cross sections is examined in the framework of the Collins-Soper-Sterman factorization, in t…
This paper presents a new event generator, ALPGEN, dedicated to the study of multiparton hard processes in hadronic collisions. The code performs, at the leading order in QCD and EW interactions, the calculation of the exact matrix elements for a large set of parton-level processes of interest in the study of the Tevatron and LHC data. The current version of the code describes the following final states: (W -> ffbar') QQbar+ N jets (Q being a heavy quark, and f=l,q), with N<=4; (Z/gamma* -> f fbar)+QQbar+Njets (f=l,nu), with N<=4; (W -> ffbar') + charm + N jets (f=l,q), N<= 5; (W -> f fbar') +…
We show that measurements of single-spin asymmetries (SSAs) in charged current weak interaction processes such as deep inelastic neutrino scattering on a polarized target and inclusive $W$ production in polarized hadron-hadron collisions discriminate between the two fundamental QCD mechanisms (the Sivers and Collins effects) which have been proposed to explain such time-reversal-odd asymmetries. It has recently been shown that QCD final-state interactions due to gluon exchange between the struck quark and the proton spectators in semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton scattering will produce non…
We consider the production of a Standard Model Higgs boson accompanied by two jets in hadronic collisions. We work in the limit that the top quark is much heavier than the Higgs boson and use an effective Lagrangian for the interactions of gluons with the Higgs boson. In addition to the previously computed four-gluon process, we compute the the amplitudes involving two quarks, two gluons and the Higgs boson and those involving four quarks and the Higgs boson. We exhibit the form of our results in the small-p_H and factorization limits. We present numerical results for root S of 14 TeV and root…
Compact analytical formulae for QED radiative corrections in the processes of elastic $e-p$ scattering are obtained in the case when kinematic variables are reconstructed from the recoil proton momentum measured. Numerical analysis is presented under kinematic conditions of current experiments at JLab.
The extended Gaussian ensemble introduced recently as a generalization of the canonical ensemble, which allows to treat energy fluctuations present in the system, is used to analyze the inelasticity distributions in high energy multiparticle production processes.
