We explore the amount of obscured star-formation as a function of environment in the A901/902 supercluster at z=0.165 in conjunction with a field sample drawn from the A901 and CDFS fields, imaged with HST as part of the STAGES and GEMS surveys. We combine the COMBO-17 near-UV/optical SED with Spitzer 24um photometry to estimate both the unobscured and obscured star formation in galaxies with Mstar>10^{10}Msun. We find that the star formation activity in massive galaxies is suppressed in dense environments, in agreement with previous studies. Yet, nearly 40% of the star-forming galaxies have red optical colors at intermediate and high densities. These red systems are not starbursting; they have star formation rates per unit stellar mass similar to or lower than blue star-forming galaxies. More than half of the red star-forming galaxies have low IR-to-UV luminosity ratios, relatively high Sersic indices and they are equally abundant at all densities. They might be gradually quenching their star-formation, possibly but not necessarily under the influence of gas-removing environmental processes. The other >40% of the red star-forming galaxies have high IR-to-UV luminosity ratios, indicative of high dust obscuration. They have relatively high specific star formation rates and are more abundant at intermediate densities. Our results indicate that while there is an overall suppression in the star-forming galaxy fraction with density, the small amount of star formation surviving the cluster environment is to a large extent obscured, suggesting that environmental interactions trigger a phase of obscured star formation, before complete quenching.
We study the distribution of X-ray selected clusters of galaxies with respect to superclusters determined by Abell clusters of galaxies and show that the distribution of X-ray clusters follows the supercluster-void network determined by Abell clusters. We find that in this network X-ray clusters are more strongly clustered than other clusters. Poor, non-Abell X-ray clusters follow the supercluster-void network as well: these clusters are embedded in superclusters determined by rich clusters and populate filaments between them. We present a new catalog of superclusters of Abell clusters out to …
We present a comparison of Abell and APM clusters of galaxies as tracers of the large scale structure of the Universe. We investigate selection functions of both cluster catalogs. We show that the supercluster-void network can be traced with both cluster samples; the network has a well-defined period of ~120 h^{-1} Mpc. We calculate the correlation function and the power spectrum for Abell and APM cluster samples. The APM cluster sample with measured redshifts covers a small volume which contains only a few very rich superclusters that surround one void and have exceptionally large mutual sepa…
Using a redshift survey of 1323 galaxies (1092 new or remeasured) in a region of 95 square degrees centered on the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 2199, we analyze the supercluster containing A2199, A2197, and an X-ray group. The caustic technique accurately reproduces the true mass profiles of simulated simple superclusters (i.e., superclusters where the virial mass of one cluster is 2-10 times the virial mass of all other clusters in the supercluster). We calculate the masses of the two main components of A2197 (A2197W and A2197E) using archival X-ray observations and demonstrate that the A2199 …
We present preliminary results of a multi-wavelength study focused on the evolution of spiral galaxies in the UV-optical colour-magnitude (CM) diagram. By combining HI, UV and optical observations of the Coma-Abell1367 supercluster we are able to identify galaxies at different stages of their evolution: from healthy star-forming galaxies, to blue HI-poor spirals and transition objects. Our analysis shows that galaxies in the transition region are likely to be the progeny of healthy spirals, whose star-formation has been quenched by the harsh cluster environment. This result suggests that, at l…
We present a high resolution dark matter reconstruction of the z=0.165 Abell 901/902 supercluster from a weak lensing analysis of the HST STAGES survey. We detect the four main structures of the supercluster at high significance, resolving substructure within and between the clusters. We find that the distribution of dark matter is well traced by the cluster galaxies, with the brightest cluster galaxies marking out the strongest peaks in the dark matter distribution. We also find a significant extension of the dark matter distribution of Abell 901a in the direction of an infalling X-ray group …
We study the spatial distribution of loose groups from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey, comparing it with the supercluster-void network delineated by rich clusters of galaxies. We use density fields and the friends-of-friends algorithm to identify the members of superclusters of Abell clusters among the Las Campanas loose groups. We find that systems of loose groups tend to be oriented perpendicularly to the line-of-sight, and discuss possible reasons for that. We show that loose groups in richer systems (superclusters of Abell clusters) are themselves also richer and more massive than groups…
We study the properties of superclusters detected in the Abell/ACO cluster catalogue. We identify the superclusters utilizing the `friend-of-friend' procedure, and then determine supercluster shapes by using the differential geometry approach. We find that the dominant supercluster morphological feature is filamentariness. We compare our Abell/ACO supercluster results with the corresponding ones generated from two different CDM cosmological models in order to investigate statistically which of the latter models best reproduces the observational results.
We present new radial velocities for 306 bright (R<16) galaxies in a 77 square deg region of the Shapley supercluster measured with the FLAIR-II spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. The galaxies we measured were uniformly distributed over the survey area in contrast to previous samples which were concentrated in several rich Abell clusters. Most of the galaxies (230) were members of the Shapley supercluster: they trace out two previously unknown sheets of galaxies linking the Abell clusters of the supercluster. In a 44 square deg area of the supercluster excluding the Abell clusters, thes…
Two-dimensional high-resolution density field of galaxies of the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS) with a smoothing length 0.8 Mpc/h is used to extract clusters and groups of galaxies, and a low-resolution field with a smoothing length 10 Mpc/h to find superclusters of galaxies. Properties of these density field (DF) clusters and superclusters are studied and compared with the properties of Abell clusters and superclusters, and LCRS loose groups. We calculate the DF-cluster luminosity function, and show that most luminous clusters in high-density environments are about ten times brighter tha…
In dense clusters, higher densities at early epochs as well as physical processes, such as ram pressure stripping and tidal interactions become important, and can have direct consequences for the evolution of bars and their host disks. To study bars and disks as a function of environment, we are using the STAGES ACS HST survey of the Abell 901/902 supercluster (z~0.165), along with earlier field studies based the SDSS and the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey (OSUBSGS). We explore the limitations of traditional methods for characterizing the bar fraction, and in particular high…
We present a weak shear analysis of the Abell 901/902 supercluster, composed of three rich clusters at z=0.16. Using a deep R-band image from the 0.5 x 0.5 degree MPG/ESO Wide Field Imager together with supplementary B-band observations, we build up a comprehensive picture of the light and mass distributions in this region. We find that, on average, the light from the early-type galaxies traces the dark matter fairly well, although one cluster is a notable exception to this rule. The clusters themselves exhibit a range of mass-to-light (M/L) ratios, X-ray properties, and galaxy populations. We…
We investigate the supercluster shape properties of the all-sky observed (Abell/ACO) and simulated (Virgo data) cluster catalogues using an approach based on differential geometry. We reliably identify rich superclusters by applying percolation statistics to both observed and mock cluster populations, the latter being constructed following the observational requirements of the Abell/ACO sample extended out to $z_{\rm max}\leq 0.114$. We apply a set of shape diagnostics in order to study in a thorough way the morphological features of superclusters with $\geq 8$ cluster members. Results demonst…
We study the space distribution of Abell and X-ray selected clusters of galaxies from the ROSAT Bright Source Catalog, and determine correlation functions for both cluster samples. On small scales the correlation functions depend on the cluster environment: clusters in rich superclusters have a larger correlation length and amplitude than all clusters. On large scales correlation functions depend on the distribution of superclusters. On these scales correlation functions for both X-ray and Abell clusters are oscillating with a period of ~115 h^{-1} Mpc. This property shows the presence of a do…
We generate the 2-dimensional high-resolution density field of galaxies of the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Las Campanas Redshift Survey with a smoothing length 0.8 Mpc/h to extract clusters and groups of galaxies, and a low-resolution field with a smoothing length 10 Mpc/h to extract superclusters of galaxies. We investigate properties of density field clusters and superclusters and compare the properties of these clusters and superclusters with those of Abell clusters, and superclusters found on the basis of Abell clusters. We found that clusters in a high-densi…
The Pisces-Cetus supercluster (redshift z~0.06) is one of the richest nearby (z<0.1) superclusters of galaxies, and emerges as a remarkable filament of galaxies at the edges of the two-degree-field galaxy redshift survey and the ongoing Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We explore the extent of the supercluster on the sky and in redshift space, and map the distribution of its constituent clusters and groups. We find evidence of enhanced star formation in galaxies belonging to groups in the supercluster compared to those in the field. This effect appears to be higher among the poorer groups than in the…
We report the discovery of two highly extended filaments and one extremely high density knot within the region of Aquarius. The supercluster candidates were chosen via percolation analysis of the Abell and ACO catalogs and include only the richest clusters (R >= 1). The region examined is a 10x45 degree strip and is now 87% complete in cluster redshift measurements to mag_10 = 18.3. In all, we report 737 galaxy redshifts in 46 cluster fields. One of the superclusters, dubbed Aquarius, is comprised of 14 Abell/ACO clusters and extends 110h^-1Mpc in length only 7 degrees off the line-of-sight. O…
We present a morphological study of galaxies in the A901/902 supercluster from the COMBO-17 survey. A total of 570 galaxies with photometric redshifts in the range 0.155 < z_phot < 0.185 are visually classified by three independent classifiers to M_V=-18. These morphological classifications are compared to local galaxy density, distance from the nearest cluster centre, local surface mass density from weak lensing, and photometric classification. At high local galaxy densities, log(Sigma_10 /Mpc^2) > 1.5, a classical morphology-density relation is found. A correlation is also found between morp…
Two-dimensional high-resolution density field of galaxies of the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with a smoothing lengths 0.8 h^{-1} Mpc is applied to extract clusters of galaxies, and a low-resolution field with smoothing lengths 10^{-1} Mpc to extract superclusters of galaxies. We compare properties of density field clusters and superclusters with Abell clusters, and superclusters found on the basis of Abell clusters. We found that clusters in high-density environment have a luminosity a factor of about 5 higher than in low-density environment. There exists a large anisotr…
The distribution of Abell clusters of galaxies is analysed to study the regularity of the supercluster-void network. A new geometric method sensitive to the regularity of the location of clusters is applied. We find that the supercluster-void network resembles a cubical lattice over the whole space investigated. The distribution of rich superclusters is not isotropic: along the main axis of the network it is periodic with a step of length about 130 Mpc (for Hubble constant h=1), whereas along the diagonal of the network the period is larger. This large-scale inhomogeneity is compatible with re…
We derive the luminosity and multiplicity functions of superclusters compiled for the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (Data Release 4), and for three samples of simulated superclusters. We find for all supercluster samples Density Field (DF) clusters, which represent high-density peaks of the class of Abell clusters, and use median luminosities/masses of richness class 1 DF-clusters to calculate relative luminosity/mass functions. We show that the fraction of very luminous (massive) superclusters in real samples is more than tenfolds greater than in simulated samples. …
We discuss lensing properties of the nearby cluster Abell 2152. Recent work shows that Abell 2152 is actually the projection of two different clusters, one of which is a Hercules supercluster member at z=0.043, while the other is more than 3 times as distant. The cluster centers have a projected separation of only 2.4 arcmin, and our data indicate that the foreground cluster lenses members of the background one. We have an ongoing program to measure the magnification of the fundamental plane in the background cluster. The magnification of this standard rod will provide an estimate of the foreg…
The Hercules Supercluster consists of the Abell clusters 2147, 2151, and 2152. Previous studies of the kinematics have been confounded by the difficulty of correctly assigning galaxies to the individual clusters, which are not well-separated. Our study has a total of 468 available velocities for galaxies in the region, 175 of them new. 414 galaxies are in the supercluster, about three times the number used in the previous supercluster study. We verify the existence of the three individual clusters and compute their individual dynamical parameters. We investigate several techniques for assignin…
We present a study of galaxies in the STAGES survey of the Abell 901/902 supercluster at z~0.165, based on HST ACS F606W, COMBO-17, Spitzer 24um, XMM-Newton X-ray, and gravitational lensing maps. We characterize galaxies with strong, externally-triggered morphological distortions and normal, relatively undisturbed galaxies, using visual classification and quantitative CAS parameters. We compare normal and distorted galaxies in terms of their frequency, distribution within the cluster, star formation properties, and relationship to dark matter (DM) or surface mass density, and intra-cluster med…
We study the infrared (K_s band) properties of clusters of galaxies in the Ursa Major supercluster using data from 2MASS (Two-Micron All-Sky Survey) and SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey). We identified three large filaments with mean redshifts of z = 0.051, 0.060, and 0.071. All clusters of the supercluster are located in these filaments. We determined the total K_s-band luminosities and masses for 11 clusters of galaxies within comparable physical regions (within a radius R_200 close to the virial radius) using a homogeneous method. We constructed a combined luminosity function for the superclu…
We study the distribution of galaxies and galaxy clusters in a 10^deg x 6^deg field in the Aquarius region. In addition to 63 clusters in the literature, we have found 39 new candidate clusters using a matched-filter technique and a counts-in-cells analysis. From redshift measurements of galaxies in the direction of these cluster candidates, we present new mean redshifts for 31 previously unobserved clusters, while improved mean redshifts are presented for 35 other systems. About 45% of the projected density enhancements are due to the superposition of clusters and/or groups of galaxies along …
We investigate correlations between galaxy age and environment in the Abell 901/2 supercluster for separate morphologies. Using COMBO-17 data, we define a sample of 530 galaxies, complete at $M_V -5\log h<-18$ on an area of $3.5\times 3.5$ (Mpc/$h$)$^2$. We explore several age indicators including an extinction-corrected residual from the colour-magnitude relation (CMR). As a result, we find a clear trend of age with density for galaxies of all morphologies that include a spheroidal component, in the sense that galaxies in denser environments are older. This trend is not seen among Scd/Irr gal…
We investigate correlations between the location of galaxies in dense environments and their degree of star-formation activity. Using photometric redshifts and spectral classifications from the unique 17-band COMBO-17 survey we are able to precisely isolate galaxies from the Abell 901/902 supercluster within a thin redshift slice around z=0.16. We compare the detailed photometric properties of the supercluster galaxies with the underlying dark matter density field as revealed by weak gravitational lensing. We find strong evidence for segregation by type, with the highest density regions popula…
We present new results of our wide-field redshift survey of galaxies in a 182 square degree region of the Shapley Supercluster (SSC) based on observations with the FLAIR-II spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. We present new measurements to give a total sample of redshifts for 710 bright (R<16.6) galaxies, of which 464 are members of the SSC (8000<v<18000 kms). Our data reveal that the main plane of the SSC extends further than previously realised, filling the whole extent of our survey region of 10 degrees by 20 degrees on the sky (35 Mpc by 70 Mpc). There is also a significant structure…
We present results of our wide-field redshift survey of galaxies in a 285 square degree region of the Shapley Supercluster (SSC), based on a set of 10529 velocity measurements (including 1201 new ones) on 8632 galaxies obtained from various telescopes and from the literature. Our data reveal that the main plane of the SSC (v~ 14500 km/s) extends further than previous estimates, filling the whole extent of our survey region of 12~degrees by 30~degrees on the sky (30 x 75~h-1 Mpc). There is also a connecting structure associated with the slightly nearer Abell~3571 cluster complex (v~ 12000km/s. …
We present a study of galaxies in the Abell 901/902 Supercluster at z~0.165, based on HST ACS F606W, COMBO-17, Spitzer 24um, XMM-Newton X-ray, and gravitational lensing maps, as part of the STAGES survey. We characterize galaxies with strong externally-triggered morphological distortions and normal relatively undisturbed galaxies, using visual classification and quantitative CAS parameters. We compare normal and distorted galaxies in terms of their frequency, distribution within the cluster, star formation properties, and relationship to dark matter (DM) or surface mass density, and intra-clus…
We report the discovery of a rich component of dusty star-forming galaxies contaminating the red-sequence in the supercluster system comprising Abell 901a, 901b and A902 at redshift ~0.17. These galaxies do not fit into the colour-density relation, because their preferred habitat is different from that of regular red-sequence galaxies, which are typically dust-poor, old and passively evolving. The dusty red galaxies prefer the medium-density outskirts of clusters while being rare in both the low-density field and the high-density cluster cores. This new result is based on the information conte…
We present here the results of a detailed study of the X-ray properties of the cluster of galaxies Abell 3128 (z=0.06), based on the analysis of deep (100 ks) XMM-Newton data. The most obvious feature of the X-ray morphology of A3128 is the presence of two X-ray peaks separated by ~12'. By detecting the redshifted Fe K line, we find that the Northeast (NE) X-ray peak observed toward A3128 is a distant luminous cluster of galaxies at redshift z=0.44. Our subsequent optical spectroscopic observation of a distant radio bright galaxy in the centre of the NE X-ray peak with the Magellan telescope a…
The environmental influence on the 1.4 GHz continuum radio emission of galaxies is analyzed in a 600 deg2 region of the local Universe containing the Shapley Supercluster (SSC). Galaxies in the FLASH and 6dFGS redshift surveys are cross-identified with NVSS radio sources, selected in a subsample doubly complete in volume and luminosity. Environmental effects are studied through a smoothed density field (normalized with random catalogs with the same survey edges and redshift selection function) and the distance to the nearest cluster (R/r200, where r200 is the virial radius, whose relation to t…
We present an investigation of the dynamical state of the cluster A262. Existing optical line of sight velocities for select cluster galaxies have been augmented by new data obtained with the Automated Multi-Object Spectrograph at Lick Observatory. We find evidence for a virialized early-type population distinct from a late-type population infalling from the Pisces-Perseus supercluster ridge. We also report on a tertiary population of low luminosity galaxies whose velocity dispersion distinguishes them from both the early and late-type galaxies. We supplement our investigation with an analysis…
We report here on extragalactic large-scale structures uncovered by a deep optical survey for galaxies behind the southern Milky Way. Systematic visual inspection of the ESO/SRC-survey revealed over 10000 previously unknown galaxies in the region 265 < l < 340, |b| < 10. With subsequently obtained redshifts of more than 10% of these galaxies, new structures across the Milky Way are unveiled, such as a filament at <v> ~ 2500 km/s connecting to the Hydra and Antlia clusters, a shallow extended supercluster in Vela (~ 6000km/s), and a nearby (4882 km/s), very massive (M ~ 2-5 10^15 Msun), rich Co…
Complementary one-, two-, and three-dimensional tests for detecting the presence of substructure in clusters of galaxies are applied to recently obtained data from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. The sample of 25 clusters used in this study includes 16 clusters not previously investigated for substructure. Substructure is detected at or greater than the 99% CL level in at least one test for 21 of the 25 clusters studied here. From the results, it appears that low richness clusters commonly contain subclusters participating in mergers. About half of the clusters have two or more components with…
We have conducted an automated search for galaxy clusters within a contiguous 16 square degree I-band survey in the north Galactic hemisphere. A matched filter detection algorithm identifies 444 cluster candidates in the range 0.2 <= z <= 1.2. The full catalog is presented along with the results from a follow-up spectroscopic survey. The estimated redshift distribution of the cluster candidates is consistent with a constant comoving density over the range 0.2 <= z_est <= 0.8. A decline in the cluster space density by more than a factor of 3 over this redshift range is rejected at >99.9% confid…
(Shortened Abstract). We analyze a redshift sample of Abell/ACO clusters and compare them with numerical simulations based on the truncated Zel'dovich approximation (TZA), for a list of eleven dark matter (DM) models. For each model we run several realizations, on which we estimate cosmic variance effects. We analyse correlation statistics, the probability density function, and supercluster properties from percolation analysis. As a general result, we find that the distribution of galaxy clusters provides a constraint only on the shape of the power spectrum, but not on its amplitude: a shape p…
At a redshift of 0.18, Abell 1689 is so far the most distant cluster of galaxies for which substantial mid-infrared (MIR) data have been published. We present here the follow-up optical photometric and spectroscopic observations which were used to study the individual properties of the galaxies members of A1689. Sources with a low [15 micron] / [6.75 micron] flux ratio typically consist of luminous passive early-type galaxies while those with a high MIR color index are mainly luminous, blue, emission-line, morphologically disturbed spirals, i.e. the star-forming galaxies usually associated wit…
Spitzer-MIPS 24 micron and ground-based observations of the rich galaxy cluster Abell 851 at z=0.41 are used to derive star formation rates from the mid-IR 24 micron and from [O II] 3727 emission. Many cluster galaxies have SFR(24 um)/SFR([O II]) >> 1, indicative of star formation highly obscured by dust. We focus on the substantial minority of A851 cluster members where strong Balmer absorption points to a starburst on a 10^{8-9} year timescale. As is typical, A851 galaxies with strong Balmer absorption occur in two types: with optical emission (starforming), and without (post-starburst). Our…
We present a new model for the creation of cool cores in rich galaxy clusters within a LambdaCDM cosmological framework using the results from high spatial dynamic range, adaptive mesh hydro/N-body simulations. It is proposed that cores of cool gas first form in subclusters and these subclusters merge to create rich clusters with cool, central X-Ray excesses. The rich cool clusters do not possess ``cooling flows'' due to the presence of bulk velocities in the intracluster medium in excess of 1000 km/sec produced by on-going accretion of gas from supercluster filaments. This new model has sever…
New adaptive mesh refinement N-body + hydrodynamics numerical simulations are used to illustrate the complex and changing cluster environments in which many radio galaxies live and evolve. Groups and clusters of galaxies form at the intersections of filaments where they continue to accrete gas and dark matter to the present day. The accretion process produces shocks, turbulence, and transonic bulk flows forming a kind of stormy weather within the intracluster medium (ICM). Radio sources embedded within the stormy ICM form distorted, complex morphologies as observed in recent VLA cluster survey…
About 25% of the optical extragalactic sky is obscured by the dust and stars of our Milky Way. Dynamically important structures might still lie hidden in this zone. Various approaches are presently being employed to uncover the galaxy distribution in the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) but all suffer from (different) limitations and selection effects. We investigated the potential of using the DENIS NIR survey for studies of galaxies behind the obscuration layer of our Milky Way and for mapping the Galactic extinction. As a pilot study, we recovered DENIS I, J and K band images of heavily obscured but…
As part of a program to study the evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in clusters of galaxies, we present our results for Abell 2104. A deep Chandra observation of this massive, z = 0.154 cluster reveals a significant X-ray point source excess over the expectations of blank fields, including eight X-ray counterparts with R<20 mag. Our spectroscopy shows that all six X-ray sources associated with red counterparts are cluster members and their X-ray properties are consistent with all of them being AGN. Only one of the six has the emission lines characteristic of optically selected AGN; the…
Combining XMM-Newton and Chandra data, we have performed a detailed study of Abell 3558. Our analysis shows that its dynamical history is more complicated than previously thought. We have found some traits typical of cool core clusters (surface brightness peaked at the center, peaked metal abundance profile) and others that are more common in merging clusters, like deviations from spherical symmetry in the thermodynamic quantities of the ICM. This last result has been achieved with a new technique for deriving temperature maps from images. We have also detected a cold front and, with the combi…
As a pilot survey for the forthcoming 6dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, spectroscopy of galaxies selected in J (1.2 mu) with the DENIS survey was performed at the UKST using the FLAIR II multi-object spectroscope. 69 galaxy redshifts (z's) were obtained in a high |b| field and an additional 12 z's in a low latitude (b=-17 deg), obscured field. This study illustrates the feasibility of obtaining z's with optical spectra on galaxies selected at much longer wavelengths. It validated a very preliminary algorithm for star/galaxy separation for high |b| DENIS objects, with 99% reliability for J < 13.9. Ho…
