Spitzer-MIPS 24 micron and ground-based observations of the rich galaxy cluster Abell 851 at z=0.41 are used to derive star formation rates from the mid-IR 24 micron and from [O II] 3727 emission. Many cluster galaxies have SFR(24 um)/SFR([O II]) >> 1, indicative of star formation highly obscured by dust. We focus on the substantial minority of A851 cluster members where strong Balmer absorption points to a starburst on a 10^{8-9} year timescale. As is typical, A851 galaxies with strong Balmer absorption occur in two types: with optical emission (starforming), and without (post-starburst). Our principal result is the former, so-called e(a) galaxies, are mostly detected (9 out of 12) at 24 um -- for these we find typically SFR(24 um)/SFR([O II]) ~ 4. Strong Balmer absorption and high values of SFR(24 um)/SFR([O II]) both indicate moderately active starbursts and support the picture that e(a) galaxies are the active starbursts that feed the post-starburst population. While 24 um detections are frequent with Balmer-strong objects (even 6 out of 18 of the supposedly "post-starburst'' galaxies are detected) only 2 out of 7 of the continuously starforming `e(c)' galaxies (with weak Balmer absorption) are detected -- for them, SFR(24 um)/SFR([O II]) ~ 1. Their optical spectra resemble present-epoch spirals that dominate today's universe; we strengthen this association by that SFR(24 um)/SFR([O II]) ~ 1 is the norm today. That is, not just the amount of star formation, but its mode, has evolved strongly from z ~ 0.4 to the present. By fitting spectrophotometric models we measure the strength and duration of the bursts to quantify the evolutionary sequence from active- to post-starburst, and to harden the evidence that moderately active starbursts are the defining feature of starforming cluster galaxies at z ~ 0.4.
We report on Spitzer IRAC observations of the spectroscopically confirmed z=6.56 lensed Ly-alpha emitting source HCM 6A which was found behind the cluster Abell 370. Detection of the source at 3.6 and 4.5 microns, corresponding to rest-frame optical emission, allows us to study the stellar population of this primeval galaxy. The broadband flux density at 4.5 microns is enhanced compared to the continuum at other wavelengths, likely due to the presence of strong H-alpha in emission. The derived H-alpha line flux corresponds to a star-formation rate of around 140 M_{sun}/yr, more than an order o…
We report the first direct detection with Spitzer of galaxy filaments. Using Spitzer and ancillary optical data, we have discovered two filamentary structures in the outskirts of the cluster Abell 1763. Both filaments point toward Abell 1770 which lies at the same redshift as Abell 1763 (z=0.23), at a projected distance of ~13 Mpc. The X-ray cluster emission is elongated along the same direction. Most of the far-infrared emission is powered by star formation. According to the optical spectra, only one of the cluster members is classified as an active galactic nucleus. Star formation is clearly…
We report the detection of a z~7 galaxy strongly lensed by the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2218 (z=0.175) at 3.6 and 4.5 um using the Spitzer Observatory and at 1.1 um using the Hubble Space Telescope. The new data indicate a refined photometric redshift in the range of 6.6-6.8 depending on the presence of Ly-alpha emission. The spectral energy distribution is consistent with having a significant Balmer break, suggesting that the galaxy is in the poststarburst stage with an age of at least ~50 Myr and quite possibly a few hundred Myr. This suggests the possibility that a mature stellar popula…
We use extensive new observations of the very rich z ~ 0.4 cluster of galaxies A851 to examine the nature and origin of starburst galaxies in intermediate-redshift clusters. New HST observations, Spitzer photometry and ground-based spectroscopy cover most of a region of the cluster about 10 arcmin across, corresponding to a clustercentric radial distance of about 1.6 Mpc. This spatial coverage allows us to confirm the existence of a morphology-density relation within this cluster, and to identify several large, presumably infalling, subsystems. We confirm our previous conclusion that a very la…
We present an analysis of the 5-8 micron Spitzer-IRS spectra of a sample of 68 local Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). Our diagnostic technique allows a clear separation of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and starburst (SB) components in the observed mid-IR emission, and a simple analytic model provides a quantitative estimate of the AGN/starburst contribution to the bolometric luminosity. We show that AGNs are ~30 times brighter at 6 micron than starbursts with the same bolometric luminosity, so that even faint AGNs can be detected. Star formation events are confirmed as the dominan…
We present observations of the starburst galaxy NGC 7714 with the Infrared Spectrograph IRS on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra yield a wealth of ionic and molecular features that allow a detailed characterization of its properties. NGC 7714 has an HII region-like spectrum with strong PAH emission features. We find no evidence for an obscured active galactic nucleus, and with [NeIII]/[NeII]~0.73, NGC7714 lies near the upper end of normal-metallicity starburst galaxies. With very little slicate absorption and a temperature of the hottest dust component of 340K, NGC 7714 is the per…
We present a detailed, multiwavelength study of the Abell 1068 galaxy cluster, and we use this data to test cooling and energy feedback models of galaxy clusters. Near ultraviolet and infrared images of the cluster show that the cD galaxy is experiencing star formation at a rate of ~20-70 M_o/yr over the past ~100 Myr. The dusty starburst is concentrated toward the nucleus of the cD galaxy and in filamentary structures projecting 60 kpc into its halo. The Chandra X-ray image presented in WMM reveals a steep temperature gradient that drops from roughly 4.8 keV beyond 120 kpc to roughly 2.3 keV …
We present Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the well-studied extremely red objects (EROs) HR10 and LBDS53W091 from 3.6 to 160 microns. These galaxies are the prototypes of the two primary classes of EROs: dusty starbursts and old, evolved galaxies, respectively. Both galaxies, as well as LBDS53W069, another example of an old, quiescent galaxy, are well-detected out to 8 microns. However, only the dusty starburst HR10 is detected in the far-infrared. All three EROs have stellar masses of a few times 10^11 M(sun). Using evolutionary model fits to their multiband photometry, we predict the…
We report on the detection of two Halpha-emitting extreme compact objects from deep images of the Abell 634 and Abell 539 clusters of galaxies at z ~ 0.03. Follow up long slit spectroscopy of these two unresolved sources revealed that they are members of their respective clusters showing HII type spectra. The luminosity and the extreme equivalent width of Halpha+[NII] measured for these sources, together with their very compact appearance, has raised the question about the origin of these intense starbursts in the cluster environment. We propose the compact starburst in Abell 539 resulted from…
We observed the brightest central galaxy (BCG) in the nearby (z=0.0821) cool core galaxy cluster Abell 2597 with the IRAC and MIPS instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The BCG was clearly detected in all Spitzer bandpasses, including the 70 and 160 micron wavebands. We report aperture photometry of the BCG. The spectral energy distribution exhibits a clear excess in the FIR over a Rayleigh-Jeans stellar tail, indicating a star formation rate of ~4-5 solar masses per year, consistent with the estimates from the UV and its H-alpha luminosity. This large FIR luminosity is consistent …
We present 5-38um mid-infrared spectra at a spectral resolution of R~65-130 of a large sample of 22 starburst nuclei taken with the Infrared Spectrograph IRS on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra show a vast range in starburst SEDs. The silicate absorption ranges from essentially no absorption to heavily obscured systems with an optical depth of tau(9.8um)~5. The spectral slopes can be used to discriminate between starburst and AGN powered sources. The monochromatic continuum fluxes at 15um and 30um enable a remarkably accurate estimate of the total infrared luminosity of the starb…
Spectra have been obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope for 20 sources in the Lockman Hole field of the SWIRE survey. The sample is divided between sources with indicators of an obscured AGN, based primarily on X-ray detections of optically-faint sources, and sources with indicators of a starburst, based on optical and near-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) which show a luminosity peak from stellar photospheric emission. Ten of the 11 AGN sources have IRS spectra which show silicate absorption or are power laws; only one AGN source shows PAH e…
We report on the environments, kinematics, and SFH of [OII]-selected objects in the z=0.4 galaxy cluster A851, using Keck optical spectra. A large fraction (~55%) of cluster [OII] emitters show strong Balmer absorptions (>4A in equivalent width at Hd). These e(a) spectra have been attributed to dusty starburst galaxies, an interpretation supported by our reddening measurements, which show a high frequency of very reddened [EBV>0.5] [OII] emitters. Our spectral modeling requires starburst ages >1Gyr, shorter than the cluster crossing timescale. We argue that this starburst phase occurs during c…
We present new Spitzer Space Telescope data on the nearby, low-metallicity starburst galaxy NGC 5253, from the Infrared Array Camera IRAC and the Infrared Spectrograph IRS. The mid-IR luminosity profile of NGC 5253 is clearly dominated by an unresolved cluster near the center, which outshines the rest of the galaxy at longer wavelengths. We find that the [NeIII]/[NeII] ratio decreases from $\sim8.5$ at the center to $\sim2.5$ at a distance of $\sim250$ pc. The [SIV]/[SIII] follows the [NeIII]/[NeII] ratio remarkably well, being about 4-5 times lower at all distances. Our spectra reveal for the…
We analyze extensive data on NGC1377 from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). Within the category of nascent starbursts, that we previously selected by their infrared to radio continuum ratios in large excess of the average and their hot dust, NGC1377 has the largest infrared excess yet measured. Optical imaging reveals a morphological distortion suggestive of a recent accretion event. Infrared spectroscopy reveals a compact and opaque source dominated by a hot, self-absorbed continuum (tau ~ 20 in the 10 micron silicate band). We provide physical evidence against non-stellar …
We have undertaken a survey of H alpha emission in a substantially complete sample of CGCG galaxies of types Sa and later within 1.5 Abell radii of the centres of 8 low-redshift Abell clusters. Some 320 galaxies were surveyed, of which 116 were detected in emission (39% of spirals, 75% of peculiars). Detected emission was classified as `compact' or `diffuse'. From an analysis of the full survey sample, we reconfirm our previous identification of compact and diffuse emission with circumnuclear starburst and disk emission respectively. The circumnuclear emission is associated either with the pre…
The fraction of star-forming galaxies in rich clusters of galaxies increases rapidly with the redshift. This is interpreted as the result of a rapid evolution of cluster galaxies, though its mechanism is not yet clear. One hypothesis is that if galaxies run into the dense intracluster medium (ICM) regions, starbursts can be induced due to compression of molecular clouds in the galaxies by a raised "external" ICM pressure. In a merging cluster, there would be dense ICM regions and some galaxies may experience a rapid increase of external pressure. Thus, if the mechanism works, starbursts would …
In our search for ``hidden'' AGN we present results from a Chandra observation of the nearby cluster Abell 2255. Eight cluster galaxies are associated with point-like X-ray emission, and we classify these galaxies based on their X-ray, radio, and optical properties. At least three are associated with active galactic nuclei (AGN) with no optical signatures of nuclear activity, with a further two being potential AGN. Of the potential AGN, one corresponds to a galaxy with a post-starburst optical spectrum. The remaining three X-ray detected cluster galaxies consist of two starbursts and an ellipt…
The mid-infrared spectroscopic analysis of a flux-limited sample of galaxies with fv(24um) > 10 mJy is presented. Sources observed are taken from the Spitzer First Look Survey (FLS) catalog and from the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey region in Bootes (NDWFS). The spectroscopic sample includes 60 of the 100 sources in these combined catalogs having fv(24um) > 10 mJy. New spectra from the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph are presented for 25 FLS sources and for 11 Bootes AGN; these are combined with 24 Bootes starburst galaxies previously published to determine the distribution of mid-infrared spectra…
We present an optical, X-ray, and radio analysis of the starburst in the Abell 1835 cluster's central cD galaxy. The dense gas surrounding the galaxy is radiating X-rays with a luminosity of ~1E45 erg/s consistent with a cooling rate of ~1000-2000 solar masses per year. However, Chandra and XMM-Newton observations find less than 200 solar masses per year of gas cooling below ~2 keV, a level that is consistent with the cD's current star formation rate of 100-180 solar masses per year. One or more heating agents (feedback) must then be replenishing the remaining radiative losses. The heat fluxes…
This paper addresses the origin of the far-infrared (FIR) continuum of QSOs, based on the Quasar and ULIRG Evolution Study (QUEST) of nearby QSOs and ULIRGs using observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope. For 27 Palomar-Green QSOs at z <~ 0.3, we derive luminosities of diagnostic lines ([NeII]12.8um, [NeV]14.3um, [OIV]25.9um) and emission features (PAH7.7um emission which is related to star formation), as well as continuum luminosities over a range of mid- to far-infrared wavelengths between 6 and 60um. We detect star-formation related PAH emission in 11/26 QSOs and fine-structure line em…
We explore the amount of obscured star-formation as a function of environment in the A901/902 supercluster at z=0.165 in conjunction with a field sample drawn from the A901 and CDFS fields, imaged with HST as part of the STAGES and GEMS surveys. We combine the COMBO-17 near-UV/optical SED with Spitzer 24um photometry to estimate both the unobscured and obscured star formation in galaxies with Mstar>10^{10}Msun. We find that the star formation activity in massive galaxies is suppressed in dense environments, in agreement with previous studies. Yet, nearly 40% of the star-forming galaxies have r…
We model the constraints set on the evolution of dusty starburst galaxies by the current deep extragalactic surveys performed in the far-infrared with $\it Spitzer$, and at radio wavelengths with the VLA. Our models fit the number counts in all the available spectral bands well, and also provide a reasonably close match to the redshift distribution of the $\it Spitzer$ detections. We find: 1.) dusty starburst galaxies with infrared burst phases triggered by galactic interactions at redshift $z \sim 1-2$ are good candidates to fit the $\it Spitzer$ results at $24μm$, $70 μm$ and $160 μm$, assum…
This paper presents deep narrow band photometry of the cluster A2317 (z=0.211) carried out using KPNO 4 m and Steward 2.3 m telescopes. Using rest frame Stromgren photometry, it is determined that A2317 has an unusually high fraction of blue galaxies (the Butcher-Oemler effect) for its redshift (f_B=0.35). We demonstrate that the ratio of blue to red galaxies has a strong dependence on absolute magnitude such that blue galaxies dominate the top of the luminosity function. Spectrophotometric classification shows that a majority of the red galaxies are E/S0's, with a small number of reddened sta…
Gravitational lensing by massive galaxy clusters is a powerful tool for the discovery and study of high redshift galaxies, including those at z>=6 likely responsible for cosmic re-ionization. Pello et al. recently used this technique to discover a candidate gravitationally magnified galaxy at z=10 behind the massive cluster lens Abell 1835 (z=0.25). We present new Keck (LRIS) and Spitzer Space Telescope (IRAC) observations of the z=10 candidate (hereafter #1916) together with a re-analysis of archival optical and near-infrared imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope and VLT respectively. Our a…
We present Spitzer observations in five wavebands between 3.6 and 24um of an unbiased sample of 9 luminous, dusty galaxies selected at 1200um by the MAMBO camera on the IRAM 30-m telescope, a population akin to the well-known submm or `SCUBA' galaxies (hereafter SMGs). Owing to the coarse resolution of submm/mm instrumentation, SMGs have traditionally been difficult to identify at other wavelengths. We compare our multi-wavelength catalogs to show that the overlap between 24 and 1200um must be close to complete at these flux levels. We find that all (4/4) of the most secure >=4sigma SMGs have …
We present deep Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the host galaxy of GRB 050904 at z=6.295. The host is detected in the H-band and marginally at 3.6 micron. From these detections, and limits in the z'-band and 4.5 micron, we infer an extinction-corrected absolute magnitude, M(UV)=-20.7 mag, or ~L*, a substantial star formation rate of 15 solar masses per year, and a stellar mass of a few 10^9 solar masses. A comparison to the published sample of spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies at z>5.5 reveals that the host of GRB 050904 would evade detection and/or confir…
High-resolution submm imaging of the HzRG, 4C60.07, at z=3.8, has revealed two dusty components. Spitzer imaging shows that one of these components (B) is coincident with an extremely red AGN, offset by ~4" (~30 kpc) from the HzRG core. The other submm component (A) - resolved by our beam and devoid of emission at 3.6-8.0um - lies between B and the HzRG core. Since the HzRG was discovered via its young, steep-spectrum lobes and their creation was likely triggered by the interaction, we argue that we are witnessing an early-stage merger, prior to its eventual equilibrium state. The interaction …
Extragalactic sources from the IRAS Faint Source Catalog (FSC) which have the optically faintest magnitudes (E > 18) were selected by spatial coincidence with a source in the FIRST radio survey, and 28 of these sources have been observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer (IRS). While an infrared source is always detected with the IRS at the FIRST position, only ~ 50% of the infrared sources are real FSC detections, as estimated from the number of sources for which the fv(25um) determined with the IRS is fainter than the sensitivity limit for the FSC. Sources have 0.12 < z < 1.0 and lum…
We combine new narrow band photometry with archival WFPC2 data for A2218 ($z$=0.18) and A2125 ($z$=0.25), two clusters with intermediate redshifts but very different cluster properties, in order to examine the evolution of galaxy populations. A2218 is a dense, elliptical-rich cluster (Bautz-Morgan type II) similar to Coma in its evolutionary appearance; whereas, A2125 is a less dense, more open cluster (Bautz-Morgan type II-III), although similar in richness to A2218. The color-magnitude relation indicates that A2125 has a more developed blue population than A2218 (the Butcher-Oemler effect), …
We present our early results of the mapping of the nucleus of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 and its immediate surroundings using the Infrared Spectrograph onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The map is centered on the nucleus of the galaxy and spans the inner 800 x 688 pc2. The spatial distribution of the \neiii line at 15.55 microns and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons feature at 11.3 microns peaks at the center while the purely rotationnal transition of molecular hydrogen at 17.03 microns is strong over several slit positions. We perform a brief investigation of the implications of these…
We use Chandra data to derive a detailed gas temperature map of the nearby, hot, merging galaxy cluster A754. Combined with the X-ray and optical images, the map reveals a more complex merger geometry than previously thought, possibly involving more than two subclusters or a cool gas cloud sloshing independently from its former host subcluster. In the cluster central region, we detect spatial variations of the gas temperature on all linear scales, from 100 kpc (the map resolution) and up, which likely remain from a merger shock passage. These variations are used to derive an upper limit on eff…
We present an investigation of the metal enrichment of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) by galactic winds and merger-driven starbursts. We use combined N-body/hydrodynamic simulations with a semi-numerical galaxy formation model. The mass loss by galactic winds is obtained by calculating transonic solutions of steady state outflows, driven by thermal, cosmic ray and MHD wave pressure. The inhomogeneities in the metal distribution caused by these processes are an ideal tool to reveal the dynamical state of a galaxy cluster. We present surface brightness, X-ray emission weighted temperature and me…
We present ground-based optical and Spitzer infrared imaging observations of the interacting galaxy UGC 10214, the "Tadpole Galaxy" (z = 0.0310), focusing on the star formation activity in the nuclear, disk, spiral arms and tidal tail regions. The major findings of this study are that the Tadpole is actively forming stars in the main disk outside of the nucleus and in the tidal plume, with an estimated mean star formation rate of ~2 to 4 M_sun/yr. The most prominent sites of mid-infrared emission define a "ring" morphology that, combined with the overall morphology of the system, suggest the i…
In this paper, we combine the stellar spectral synthesis code STARBURST 99, the nebular modelling code MAPPINGS IIIq, a 1-D dynamical evolution model of \HII regions around massive clusters of young stars and a simplified model of synchrotron emissivity to produce purely theoretical self-consistent synthetic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for (solar metallicity) starbursts lasting some $10^8$ years. These SEDs extend from the Lyman Limit to beyond 21 cm. We find that two ISM parameters control the form of the SED; the pressure in the diffuse phase of the ISM (or, equivalently, its densit…
A complete flux-limited sample of 50 galaxies is presented having f_ν(24um) > 10mJy, chosen from a survey with the Multiband Imaging Photometer on Spitzer (MIPS) of 8.2 deg^{2} within the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey region in Bootes (NDWFS). Spectra obtained with the low-resolution modules of the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer (IRS) are described for 36 galaxies within this sample; 25 show strong PAH emission features characteristic of starbursts, and 11 show silicate absorption or emission, emission lines, or featureless spectra characteristic of AGN. Infrared or optical spectral classifica…
We present the results of Spitzer IRS low-resolution infrared 5-35 micron spectroscopy of nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z < 0.15. We focus on the search for the signatures of buried active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the complete sample of ULIRGs classified optically as non-Seyferts (LINERs or HII-regions). In addition to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features at 6.2 micron, 7.7 micron, and 11.3 micron, the conventional tool of starburst-AGN separation, we use the optical depths of the 9.7 micron and 18 micron silicate dust absorption features to infer the g…
Chandra and XMM-Newton observations have confirmed the presence of large temperature gradients within the cores of many relaxed clusters of galaxies. Here we investigate whether thermal conduction operating over those gradients can supply sufficient heat to offset radiative cooling. Narayan & Medvedev (2001) and Gruzinov (2002) have noted, using published results on cluster temperatures, that conduction within a factor of a few of the Spitzer rate is sufficient to balance bremsstrahlung cooling. From a detailed study of the temperature and emission measure profiles of Abell 2199 and Abell 1835…
Early results from the 70-micron observations of the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey are presented. As a whole, about 90% of the population show infrared colors that are consistent with the spectral energy distributions of the local IRAS population of luminous infrared starbursts, while approximately 10% of the sample show warm infrared colors consistent with AGN activity. The mean redshift for the population is z=0.2, and the mean total infrared luminosity is about L(ir)= 2x10^{11} L(sun).
We present mid-infrared spectroscopy obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope of a sample of 11 optically faint, infrared luminous galaxies selected from a Spitzer MIPS 70um imaging survey of the NDWFS Bootes field. These are the first Spitzer IRS spectra presented of distant 70um-selected sources. All the galaxies lie at redshifts 0.3<z<1.3 and have very large infrared luminosities of L_IR~ 0.1-17 x 10^12 solar luminosities. Seven of the galaxies exhibit strong emission features attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The average IRS spectrum of these sources is characteristic…
At a redshift of 0.18, Abell 1689 is so far the most distant cluster of galaxies for which substantial mid-infrared (MIR) data have been published. We present here the follow-up optical photometric and spectroscopic observations which were used to study the individual properties of the galaxies members of A1689. Sources with a low [15 micron] / [6.75 micron] flux ratio typically consist of luminous passive early-type galaxies while those with a high MIR color index are mainly luminous, blue, emission-line, morphologically disturbed spirals, i.e. the star-forming galaxies usually associated wit…
This is the second paper studying the QSOs in the spitzer QUEST sample. Previously we presented new PAH measurements and argued that most of the observed far infrared (FIR) radiation is due to star-forming activity. Here we present spectral energy distributions (SEDs) by supplementing our data with optical, NIR and FIR observations. We define two sub-groups of ``weak FIR'' and ``strong FIR'' QSOs, and a third group of FIR non-detections. Assuming a starburst origin for the FIR, we obtain ``intrinsic'' AGN SEDs by subtracting a starburst template from the mean SEDs. The resulting SEDs are remar…
Deep VLA 1.4 GHz radio continuum imaging of Abell 2255 is presented. This cluster is among the better nearby candidates for rich cluster-cluster merger systems, with evidence including an elongated X-ray morphology, the presence of a radio halo, and substructure present in its galaxy distribution. Our radio observations reach an rms sensitivity of ~40 uJy/beam, enabling us to detect (at 5 sigma) star formation rates as low as 1.4 M(sun)/year from the center of the cluster out to a radial distance of 3 Mpc. The radio data are complemented by optical imaging and a large spectroscopic database, a…
We report on a Chandra observation of the massive, medium redshift (z=0.1386) cooling flow cluster Abell 1068. We detect a clear temperature gradient in the X-ray emitting gas from kT ~ 5 keV in the outer part of the cluster down to roughly 2 keV in the core, and a striking increase in the metallicity of the gas toward the cluster center. The total spectrum from the cluster can be fit by a cooling flow model with a total mass deposition rate of 150 solar masses/yr. Within the core (r < 30 kpc), the mass depositon rate of 40 solar masses/yr is comparable to estimates for the star formation rate…
We report the initial results from a Spitzer GO-1 program to obtain low resolution, mid-infrared spectra of infrared luminous galaxies at z~1-2. This paper presents the spectra of eight sources observed with the Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS). Of the eight spectra, six have mid-IR spectral features, either emission from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) or silicate absorption. Based on these mid-IR features, the inferred six redshifts are in the range of 1.8-2.6. The remaining two spectra detect only strong continua, thus do not yield redshift information. Strong, multiple PAH emissio…
How does the submm galaxy population detected by SCUBA fit into galaxy evolution? How do these rare starbursting systems, which contribute significantly to high redshift star-formation, relate to other galaxy populations? Deep radio observations have been most useful for studying these systems, but still leave a significant fraction of the population unidentified. Now with the deep IRAC and MIPS images from the GOODS Spitzer Legacy program and a re-analysis of the deep radio data, we are able to identify counterparts for a large fraction of SCUBA galaxies in GOODS-N. All of these counterparts …
We present Spitzer infrared (IR) photometry and spectroscopy of the lensed Lyman break galaxy (LBG), MS1512-cB58 at z=2.73. The large (factor ~30) magnification allows for the most detailed infrared study of an L*_UV(z=3) LBG to date. Broadband photometry with IRAC (3-10 micron), IRS (16 micron), and MIPS (24, 70 & 160 micron) was obtained as well as IRS spectroscopy spanning 5.5-35 microns. A fit of stellar population models to the optical/near-IR/IRAC photometry gives a young age (~9 Myr), forming stars at ~98 M_sun/yr, with a total stellar mass of ~10^9 M_sun formed thus far. The existence …
High-redshift submillimetre-bright galaxies identified by blank field surveys at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths appear in the region of the IRAC colour-colour diagrams previously identified as the domain of luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our analysis using a set of empirical and theoretical dusty starburst spectral energy distribution (SED) models shows that power-law continuum sources associated with hot dust heated by young (<100 Myr old), extreme starbursts at z>2 also occupy the same general area as AGNs in the IRAC colour-colour plots. A detailed comparison of the IRAC …
The SED of the lensed z=6.56 galaxy HCM6A behind the cluster Abell 370 has been analysed. We find clear indications for the presence of dust in this galaxy, and we estimate the properties of its stellar populations (SFR, age, etc.). From its estimated luminosity, L~(1-4)e.+11 Lsun, this galaxy ranks as a luminous infrared galaxy. This case is then used to examine the detectability of high-z galaxies with Herschel and ALMA. It is evident that with the use of strong gravitational lensing SPIRE/Herschel observations could provide very interesting information on z > 5 galaxies. Strong synergies be…
We present results from a search for high-redshift J--band ``dropout'' galaxies in the portion of the GOODS southern field that is covered by extremely deep imaging from the Hubble Ultradeep Field (HUDF).Using observations at optical, near-infrared and mid-infrared wavelengths from the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes and the ESO-VLT, we search for very massive galaxies at high redshifts and find one particularly remarkable candidate. Its spectral energy distribution is consistent with a galaxy at z ~ 6.5 and a stellar mass of 6x10e11 M(sun) (for a Salpeter IMF). We interpret a prominent ph…
We present optical spectroscopy of a sample of 77 luminous AGN and quasars selected on the basis of their mid-infrared colors. Our objects are selected from the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey and SWIRE XMM-LSS fields, with a typical 24mu flux density of 5mJy. The median redshift is 0.6, with a range of ~0.05-4. Only 33% (25/77) of these objects are normal type-1 quasars, with no obscuration. 44% (34/77) are type-2 objects, with high-ionization, narrow emission lines, 14% (11/77) are dust-reddened type-1 quasars, showing broad lines but a dust-reddened or unusually weak quasar continuu…
We report results from a Spitzer GO-1 program of IRS spectroscopy of a large sample of Luminous Infrared Galaxies and quasars selected from the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) which have a wide multiwavelength coverage, including ISOCAM, ISOPHOT, IRAC and MIPS (from SWIRE), and optical photometry. We present the sample selection and results from the IRS spectroscopy.
The behavior of the aromatic features as a function of metallicity/radiation field hardness in M101 HII regions and starburst galaxies is investigated using Spitzer/IRS spectra. These spectra reveal that the 6.2, 7.8+8.6, and 11.3 micron aromatics have different dependencies on metallicity/radiation field hardness. Specifically, the 6.2 and 7.8+8.6 micron aromatics are weak or absent at a metallicity, 12+log(O/H), of approx. 8.0 while the 11.3 micron feature remains relatively strong. These results apply to both the M101 HII regions and starbursts showing that HII regions can indeed be thought…
We present a study of a very peculiar object found in the field of the cluster-lens Abell 370. This object displays, in HST imaging, a spectacular morphology comparable to nearby ring-galaxies. From spectroscopic observations at the CFHT, we measured a redshift of $z=1.062$ based on the identification of [O ii] 3727 Åand [Ne v] 3426 Åemission lines. These emission lines are typical of starburst galaxies hosting a central active nucleus and are in good agreement with the assumption that this object is a ring-galaxy. This object is also detected with ISO in the LW2 and LW3 filters, and the mid I…
We present the analysis of our 13 and 22 cm ATCA observations of the central region of the merging galaxy cluster A3921 (z=0.094). We investigated the effects of the major merger between two sub-clusters on the star formation (SF) and radio emission properties of the confirmed cluster members. The origin of SF and the nature of radio emission in cluster galaxies was investigated by comparing their radio, optical and X-ray properties. We also compared the radio source counts and the percentage of detected radio galaxies with literature data. We detected 17 radio sources above the flux density l…
We report on submillimeter and infrared observations of 28 radio-selected galaxies in the Spitzer First Look Survey Verification field (FLSV). All of the radio-selected galaxies that show evidence for emission at 850um with SCUBA have Spitzer counterparts at 24um, while only half of the radio-selected galaxies without 850um emission have detectable counterparts at 24um. The data show a wide range of infrared colors (S70/S24 < 5--30, S8/S3.6 < 0.3--4), indicative of a mixture of infrared-warm AGN and cooler starburst dominated sources. The galaxies showing 850um emission have Spitzer flux densi…
The Spitzer high resolution spectra of 72 Seyfert galaxies from the 12$μ$m Galaxy Sample are presented and discussed. The presence of starburst components in these galaxies can be quantified by powerful mid-IR diagnostics tools (i.e. 11.25$μ$m PAH feature equivalent width and the H$_2$ emission line intensity), as well as the AGN dominance can be measured by specific fine structure line ratios (e.g. [NeV]/[NeII], [NeV]/[SiII], etc.). The two types of Seyfert galaxies do not show any statistical difference in our diagnostic tools. However, the Seyfert 2's showing hidden Broad Line Regions in sp…
The Spitzer Space Telescope is pushing into new frontiers in high redshift astronomy. Closer to home, Spitzer is making an equally large impact on our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. In this contribution we present mid-infrared diagnostics based largely on data from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). Our main result is that these mid-infrared diagnostics effectively constrain a target's dominant power source. The combination of a high ionization line index and PAH strength serves as an efficient discriminant between AGN and star-forming nuclei, confirming pro…
(Abridged) High-redshift ultra luminous infrared galaxies contribute the bulk of the cosmic IR background and are the best candidates for very massive galaxies in formation at z>1.5. We present Keck/LRIS optical spectroscopy of 35 z>1.4 luminous IR galaxies in the Spitzer Wide-area Infra-Red Extragalactic survey (SWIRE) northern fields (Lockman Hole, ELAIS-N1, ELAIS-N2). The primary targets belong to the ``IR-peak'' class of galaxies, having the 1.6 micron (restframe) stellar feature detected in the IRAC Spitzer channels. The spectral energy distributions of the main targets are thoroughly anal…
We are conducting a large observing program with the Spitzer Space Telescope to determine the mid-to-far infrared spectral energy distributions of a well-defined sample of 87 nearby, 12 micron-selected Seyfert galaxies. In this paper we present the results of IRS low-resolution spectroscopy of a statistically representative subsample of 51 of the galaxies (59%), with an analysis of the continuum shapes and a comparison of the Seyfert types. We find that the spectra clearly divide into groups based on their continuum shapes and spectral features. Some spectral features are clearly related to a …
