We present preliminary results of a multi-wavelength study focused on the evolution of spiral galaxies in the UV-optical colour-magnitude (CM) diagram. By combining HI, UV and optical observations of the Coma-Abell1367 supercluster we are able to identify galaxies at different stages of their evolution: from healthy star-forming galaxies, to blue HI-poor spirals and transition objects. Our analysis shows that galaxies in the transition region are likely to be the progeny of healthy spirals, whose star-formation has been quenched by the harsh cluster environment. This result suggests that, at least in clusters of galaxies, the migration of galaxies from the blue to the red sequence might be due to environmental processes.
High sensitivity 21-cm HI line observations, with an rms noise level of \sim 0.5 mJy, were made of 35 spiral galaxies in the Coma Supercluster, using the refurbished Arecibo telescope, which resulted in the detection of 25 objects. These data, combined with the measurements available from the literature, provide the set of HI data for 94% of all late-type galaxies in the Coma Supercluster with an apparent photographic magnitude m_p <15.7 mag. We confirm that the typical scale of HI deficiency around the Coma cluster is 2 Mpc, i.e. one virial radius. Comparing the HI mass function (HIMF) of clu…
We present integrated H alpha measurements obtained from imaging observations of 98 late-type galaxies, primarily selected in the Coma supercluster. These data, combined with H alpha photometry from the literature, include a magnitude selected sample of spiral (Sa to Irr) galaxies belonging to the "Great Wall" complete up to mp=15.4, thus composed of galaxies brighter than Mp=-18.8 (H0=100 km Mpc^-1 s^-1). The frequency distribution of the H alpha E.W., determined for the first time from an optically complete sample, is approximately gaussian peaking at E.W. ~25 A. We find that, at the present…
We study the relationship between the mid-IR (5-18 $μ$m) emission of late-type galaxies and various other star formation tracers in order to investigate the nature of the dust heating sources in this spectral domain. The analysis is carried out using a sample of 123 normal, late-type, nearby galaxies with available data at several frequencies. The mid-IR luminosity (normalized to the H-band luminosity) correlates better with the far-IR luminosity than with more direct tracers of the young stellar population such as the H$α$ and the UV luminosity. The comparison of resolved images reveals a rem…
Clusters of galaxies are often embedded in larger-scale superclusters with dimensions of tens or perhaps even hundreds of Mpc. Observational and theoretical evidence suggest an important connection between cluster properties and their surroundings, with cluster formation being driven primarily by the infall of material along large-scale filaments. Nowhere is this connection more obvious than the Coma cluster.
Optical spectroscopy of 76 galaxies, 48 of which are projected in the direction of the Virgo cluster and 28 onto the Coma-A1367 supercluster, is reported. Adding these new measurements to those found in the literature, the redshift completeness in the Virgo region becomes 92% at B_T<=16.0 and 68% at B_T<=18.0. The one of CGCG galaxies in the direction of the Coma-A1367 supercluster becomes 98%. The Virgo cluster membership estimates obtained on morphological grounds by Binggeli et al. (1985) are confirmed in all cases. However, several "possible members" classified as BCD (if in the cluster) a…
Using new extensive radio continuum surveys at 1.4 GHz (FIRST and NVSS), we derive the distribution of the radio/optical and radio/NIR luminosity (RLF) of late-type (Sa-Irr) galaxies (mp<15.7) in 5 nearby clusters of galaxies: A262, Cancer, A1367, Coma and Virgo. With the aim of discussing possible environmental dependences of the radio properties, we compare these results with those obtained for relatively isolated objects in the Coma supercluster. We find that the RLF of Cancer, A262 and Virgo are consistent with that of isolated galaxies. Conversely we confirm earlier claims that galaxies i…
We present near-infrared (H band) surface photometry of 170 galaxies, obtained in 1997 using the Calar Alto 2.2m telescope equipped with the NICMOS3 camera MAGIC. The majority of our targets are selected among bright members of the Virgo cluster, however galaxies in the A262 and Cancer clusters and in the Coma/A1367 supercluster are also included. This data set is aimed at complementing the NIR survey in the Virgo cluster discussed in Boselli et al. (1997) and in the Coma Supercluster, presented in Papers I, II and III of this series. Magnitudes at the optical radius, total magnitudes, isophot…
The dependence of flattening of galaxies on the density of galaxies in subclusters selected around galaxies NGC4889, NGC4874 and NGC4839 in the Coma cluster has been studied. The mean values of observed ratios of galaxy diameters and histograms of their distributions indicate that in the central, dense regions of subclusters E and S0 type galaxies are close to spheroidals. Spiral galaxies in subcllusters are found with a hydrogen deficit that about 5 times exceeds the hydrogen deficit in spirals within the halo of the Coma cluster. Most of spirals with a hydrogen deficit in the subcluster arou…
Six subclusters in the Coma cluster have been selected on the basis of a hierarchical clustering method that takes the gravitational interaction among galaxies into account. Of these, three main subclusters around the galaxies NGC 4889, NGC 4874, and NGC 4839 have been singled out. We have used the objective statistical criterion applied by Vennik and Anosova in studies of close groups of galaxies to evaluate each member included in a subcluster with a high probability. Galaxies with a significant deficit of hydrogen HI, including objects from the Bravo-Alfaro list, have been identified with me…
We present WSRT and VLA radio observations of the neutral hydrogen in the radio galaxy Coma A. We detect extended HI absorption against both radio lobes of Coma A, at distances of about 30 kpc from the centre. Coma A is the first radio galaxy in which HI is seen in absorption at such large distances from the nucleus. The match between the velocities of the neutral hydrogen and those of the extended ionized gas suggests that they are part of the same disk-like structure of at least 60 kpc in diameter. Most likely, this gas disk is partly ionised by the bulk motion of the radio lobes expanding i…
We have looked for differences in the galaxy properties along the Hubble sequence and for the dependence of these properties on the environment, in an absolute magnitude complete sample of 187 galaxies in the Coma cluster. The morphological type of all galaxies was determined from our own high resolution data. We also compared this sample with other published complete samples of galaxies in the Perseus and Virgo clusters and in the local field. Ellipticals and lenticulars are highly homogeneous in all their internal photometric properties. These galaxies are well described just by their morpho…
We have searched for nearby dwarf galaxies in 27 northern groups with characteristic distances 8-15 Mpc based on the Second Palomar Sky Survey prints. In a total area of about 2000 square degrees, we have found 90 low-surface-brightness objects, more than 60% of which are absent from known catalogs and lists. We have classified most of these objects (~80%) as irregular dwarf systems. The first 21-cm line observations of the new objects with the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope showed that the typical linear diameters (1-2 kpc), internal motions (30 km/s), and hydrogen masses (~2*10^7M_sun) gal…
We investigate the stellar populations in a sample of 89 faint (M*+2 to M*+4) red galaxies in the Coma cluster, using high S/N spectroscopy from the MMT. Our sample is drawn from two 1-degree fields, one centred on the cluster core and the other located a degree to the south west of the cluster centre. For a comparison sample we use published high-S/N data for red-sequence galaxies in the Shapley Supercluster. We use state-of-the-art stellar population models to infer the SSP-equivalent age and metallicity (Fe/H) for each galaxy, as well as the abundances of the light elements Mg, Ca, C and N.…
This paper presents the detailed results obtained in the search of density- velocity inhomogeneities in a volume limited and absolute magnitude limited sample of A-F type dwarfs within 125 parsecs of the Sun. A 3-D wavelet analysis is used to extract inhomogeneities, both in the density and velocity distributions. Having established a real picture of the phase space without assumption we come back to previously known observational facts regarding clusters and associations, superclusters. In the 3-D position space, well known open clusters (Hyades, Coma Berenices and Ursa Major), associations (…
We use the $C_{2}4668$, $Fe4383$, $Hγ_A$ and $Hδ_A$ spectral absorption line indices, together with U- and V-band photometry of 101 galaxies in the Coma cluster, to investigate how mean age and metal abundance correlate with galaxy luminosity. In particular, we use the line index measurements to address the origin of the colour-magnitude relation (CMR). We find that the CMR in Coma is driven primarily by a luminosity-metallicity correlation. We additionally show evidence for a relation between age and luminosity, in the direction predicted by the semi-analytic hierarchical clustering models of…
We provide new post-COSTAR data on one sightline (Mrk 421) and updated data from another (I Zw 1) from our Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of intergalactic Lyman-alpha clouds located along sightlines to four bright quasars passing through well-mapped galaxy voids (16,000 km/s pathlength) and superclusters (18,000 km/s). We report two more definite detections of low-z Lyman-alpha clouds in voids: one at 3047 km/s (heliocentric) toward Mrk 421 and a second just beyond the Local Supercluster at 2861 km/s toward I Zw 1, confirming our earlier discovery of Lyman-alpha absorption clouds in voids…
We analyze the properties of a sample of galaxies identified in a 21-cm, HI-line survey of selected areas in the Perseus-Pisces supercluster and its foreground void. Twelve fields were observed in the supercluster, five of them (target fields) centered on optically bright galaxies, and the other seven (blank fields) selected to contain no bright galaxies. We detected nine previously uncataloged, gas-rich galaxies, six of them in the target fields. We also detected HI from seven previously cataloged galaxies in these fields. Observations in the void covered the same volume as the twelve supercl…
This is the first in a series of papers describing the {\it Optical Redshift Survey} (ORS), a redshift survey of optically selected galaxies covering 98\% of the sky above $|b| = 20^\circ$ (8.09 ster). The survey is drawn from the UGC, ESO, and ESGC galaxy catalogues, and contains two sub-samples, one complete to a $B$ magnitude of 14.5, the other complete to a $B$ major axis diameter of $1.9^\prime$. The entire sample consists of 8457 objects, of which redshifts are now available for 8286; 171 objects remain without measured redshifts. The ORS provides the most detailed and homogeneous sampli…
Halpha+[NII] imaging observations of 369 late-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster and in the Coma/A1367 supercluster are analyzed. They constitute an optically selected sample (m_p<16.0) observed with 60% c.a. completeness. These observations provide us with the current (T<10^7 yrs) star formation properties of galaxies. The expected decrease of the star formation rate (SFR),as traced by the Halpha E.W., with decreasing clustercentric projected distance is found only when galaxies brighter than M_p=-19.5 are considered. We also include in our analysis Near Infrared data, providing us with inform…
We present here results of studies of the properties of galaxies located in very low density environments. We observed 26 blue compact galaxies (BCGs) from the Second Byurakan (SBS) and Case surveys located in voids with the radial velocities V < 11000 km/s, two BCGs in the void behind the Virgo cluster and 11 BCGs in denser environments. HI fluxes and profile widths, as well as estimates of total HI masses, are presented for the 27 detected galaxies (of which 6 are in three galaxy pairs and are not resolved by the radiotelescope beam). Preliminary comparisons of void BCGs with similar objects…
