For an oriented link diagram D, the warping degree d(D) is the smallest number of crossing changes which are needed to obtain a monotone diagram from D. An unknotting invariant for welded knots

We study a local twist move on welded knots that is an analog of the virtualization move on virtual knots. Since this move is an unknotting operation we define an invariant, unknotting twist number, for welded knots. We relate the unknotting twist number with warping degree and welded unknotting number, and establish a lower bound on the twist number using Alexander quandle coloring. We also study the Gordian distance between welded knots by twist move and define the corresponding Gordian complex.

Lattice Diagrams of Knots and Diagrams of Lattice Stick Knots

We give a simple example showing that a knot or link diagram that lies in the ${\mathbb{Z}}^2$ lattice is not necessarily the projection of a lattice stick knot or link in the ${\mathbb{Z}}^3$ lattice, and we give a necessary and sufficient condition for when a knot or link diagram that lies in the ${\mathbb{Z}}^2$ lattice is in fact the projection of a lattice stick knot or link.

11-colored knot diagram with five colors

We prove that any $11$-colorable knot is presented by an $11$-colored diagram where exactly five colors of eleven are assigned to the arcs. The number five is the minimum for all non-trivially $11$-colored diagrams of the knot. We also prove a similar result for any $11$-colorable ribbon $2$-knot.

Minimal diagrams of classical knots

We show that if a classical knot diagram satisfies a certain combinatorial condition then it is minimal with respect to the number of classical crossings. This statement is proved by using the Kauffman bracket and the construction of atoms and knots.

On rack colorings for surface-knot diagrams without branch points

Racks do not give us invariants of surface-knots in general. For example, if a surface-knot diagram has branch points (and a rack which we use satisfies some mild condition), then it admits no rack colorings. In this paper, we investigate rack colorings for surface-knot diagrams without branch points and prove that rack colorings are invariants of $S^2$-knots. We also prove that rack colorings for $S^2$-knots can be interpreted in terms of quandles, and discuss a relationship with regular-equivalences of surface-knot diagrams.

Gauss diagrams of real and virtual knots in the solid torus

We define a new kind of Gauss diagrams to describe knots in the solid torus with projections in the annulus. We see that it provides an efficient tool for showing that a knot diagram can be fully recovered from its decorated Gauss diagram, and we use it to establish a characterization of the decorated Gauss diagrams of closed braids.

Diagrammatic unknotting of knots and links in the projective space

In the classical knot theory there is a well-known notion of descending diagram. From an arbitrary diagram one can easily obtain, by some crossing changes, a descending diagram which is a diagram of the unknot or unlink. In this paper the notion of descending diagram for knots and links in the real space is extended to the case of nonoriented knots and links in the projective space. It is also shown that this notion cannot be extended to oriented links.

Unique diagram of a spatial arc and the knotting probability

It is shown that the projection image of an oriented spatial arc to any oriented plane is approximated by a unique arc diagram (up to isomorphic arc diagrams) determined from the spatial arc and the projection. In a separated paper, the knotting probability of an arc diagram is defined as an invariant under isomorphic arc diagrams. By combining them, the knotting probability of every oriented spatial arc is defined.

Encoding knots by clasp diagrams

We introduce a new combinatorial method to encode knots and links with applications to knot invariants. Clasp diagrams defined in this paper are combinatorial blueprints for building knot diagrams out of full twists on two strings rather than out of crossings. We describe an equivalence relation on clasp diagrams which produces the isotopy classes of knots as equivalence classes. The incompatibility of crossing number and bridge number for knot diagrams

We define and compare several natural ways to compute the bridge number of a knot diagram. We study bridge numbers of crossing number minimizing diagrams, as well as the behavior of diagrammatic bridge numbers under the connected sum operation. For each notion of diagrammatic bridge number considered, we find crossing number minimizing knot diagrams which fail to minimize bridge number. Furthermore, we construct a family of minimal crossing diagrams for which the difference between diagrammatic bridge number and the actual bridge number of the knot grows to infinity.

On the tree-width of knot diagrams

We show that a small tree-decomposition of a knot diagram induces a small sphere-decomposition of the corresponding knot. This, in turn, implies that the knot admits a small essential planar meridional surface or a small bridge sphere. We use this to give the first examples of knots where any diagram has high tree-width. This answers a question of Burton and of Makowsky and Mariño.

Sutured Heegaard diagrams for knots

We define sutured Heegaard diagrams for null-homologous knots in 3-manifolds. These diagrams are useful for computing the knot Floer homology at the top filtration level. As an application, we give a formula for the knot Floer homology of a Murasugi sum. Our result echoes Gabai's earlier works. We also show that for so-called 'semifibred' satellite knots, the top filtration term of the knot Floer homology is isomorphic to the counterpart of the companion.

A move on diagrams that generates S-equivalence of knots

Two knots in three-space are S-equivalent if they are indistinguishable by Seifert matrices. We show that S-equivalence is generated by the doubled-delta move on knot diagrams. It follows as a corollary that a knot has trivial Alexander polynomial if and only if it can be undone by doubled-delta moves.

Stable Equivalence of Knots on Surfaces and Virtual Knot Cobordisms

We introduce an equivalence relation, called stable equivalence, on knot diagrams and closed curves on surfaces. We give bijections between the set of abstract knots, the set of virtual knots, and the set of the stable equivalence classes of knot diagrams on surfaces. Using these bijections, we define concordance and link homology for virtual links. As an application, it is shown that Kauffman's example of a virtual knot diagram is not equivalent to a classical knot diagram.

Unknotting rectangular diagrams of the trivial knot by exchanging moves

If a rectangular diagram represents the trivial knot, then it can be deformed into the rectangular diagram with only two vertical edges by a finite sequence of merge operations and exchange operations, without increasing the number of vertical edges, which was shown by I. A. Dynnikov. We show in this paper that we need no merge operations to deform a rectangular diagram of the trivial knot to one with no crossings.

Diagram uniqueness for highly twisted knots

Frequently, knots are enumerated by their crossing number. However, the number of knots with crossing number $c$ grows exponentially with $c$, and to date computer-assisted proofs can only classify diagrams up to around twenty crossings. We explore free knot diagrams, which are projections of knots into the plane which don't record over/under data at crossings. We consider the combinatorial question of which free knot diagrams give which knots and with what probability. Every free knot diagram is proven to produce trefoil knots, and certain simple families of free knots are completely worked out. We make some conjectures (supported by computer-generated data) about bounds on the probability of a knot arising from a fixed free diagram being the unknot, or being the trefoil.

Regular-equivalence of $2$-knot diagrams and sphere eversions

For each diagram $D$ of a $2$-knot, we provide a way to construct a new diagram $D'$ of the same knot such that any sequence of Roseman moves between $D$ and $D'$ necessarily involves branch points. Knotoids

We introduce and study knotoids. Knotoids are represented by diagrams in a surface which differ from the usual knot diagrams in that the underlying curve is a segment rather than a circle. Knotoid diagrams are considered up to Reidemeister moves applied away from the endpoints of the underlying segment. We show that knotoids in $S^2$ generalize knots in $S^3$ and study the semigroup of knotoids. We also discuss applications to knots and invariants of knotoids.

If $C (t)= T_c(t)$ is a Chebyshev polynomial, we call such a knot a harmonic knot. We give the classification of harmonic knots for $a \le 4.$

Unknotting twisted knots with Gauss diagram forbidden moves

Twisted knot theory, introduced by M.O.Bourgoin, is a generalization of virtual knot theory. It is easily shown that any virtual knot can be deformed into a trivial knot by a finite sequence of generalized Reidemeister moves and two "forbidden moves" $F_{1}$ and $F_{2}$. Similarly, we show that any twisted knot also can be deformed into a trivial knot or a trivial knot with a bar by a finite sequence of extended Reidemeister moves and three "forbidden moves" $T_{4}$, $F_{1}$ (or $F_{2}$) and $F_{3}$ (or $F_{4}$) .

A Representation Theorem for Knots and a Generalization of the Fundamental Theorem of Finite Type Invariants

We provide a way to produce knots in $S^3$ from signed chord diagrams, and prove that every knot can be produced in this way. Using these diagrams, we generalize the fundamental theorem of finite type invariants. We also provide moves for the diagrams so that any two diagrams for the same knot are connected by a sequence of moves.

New classes of minimal knot diagrams

We describe a new class of minimal link diagrams. This class includes certain alternating diagrams, the standard diagrams of all torus links, and numerous homogeneous diagrams whose minimality has not been proven before. Besides, we describe a new larger class of link diagrams with the least number of Seifert circles among all diagrams of a given link. Our approach refers to the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality.

Knot diagrams on a punctured sphere as a model of string figures

A string figure is topologically a trivial knot lying on an imaginary plane orthogonal to the fingers with some crossings. The fingers prevent cancellation of these crossings. As a mathematical model of string figure we consider a knot diagram on the $xy$-plane in $xyz$-space missing some straight lines parallel to the $z$-axis. These straight lines correspond to fingers. We study minimal number of crossings of these knot diagrams under Reidemeister moves missing these lines.

Virtual Knot Diagrams and the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev Invariant

The Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant of classical link diagrams is generalized to virtual link diagrams. This invariant is unchanged by the framed Reidemeister moves and the Kirby calculus. As a result, it is also an invariant of the 3-manifolds represented by the classical link diagrams. This generalization is used to demonstrate that there are virtual knot diagrams with a non-trivial Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant and trivial 3-manifold fundamental group.

On L-space knots obtained from unknotting arcs in alternating diagrams

Let $D$ be a diagram of an alternating knot with unknotting number one. The branched double cover of $S^3$ branched over $D$ is an L-space obtained by half integral surgery on a knot $K_D$. We denote the set of all such knots $K_D$ by $\mathcal D$. We characterize when $K_D\in \mathcal D$ is a torus knot, a satellite knot or a hyperbolic knot. In a different direction, we show that for a given $n>0$, there are only finitely many L-space knots in $\mathcal D$ with genus less than $n$.

A New Way to Tabulate Knots

We introduce a new way to tabulate knots by representing knot diagrams using a pair of planar trees. This pair of trees have their edges labeled by integers, they have no valence 2 vertices, and they have the same number of valence 1 vertices. The number of valence 1 vertices of the trees is called the girth of the knot diagram. The classification problem of knots admitting girth 2 and 3 diagrams is studied. The planar tree pair representations of girth less than 4 for knot diagrams in Rolfsen's table are given.
