We show that any separated essentially finite-type map $f$ of noetherian schemes globally factors as $f = hi$ where $i$ is an injective localization map and $h$ a separated finite-type map. In particular, via Nagata's compactification theorem, $h$ can be chosen to be proper. We apply these results to Grothendieck duality. We also obtain other factorization results and provide essentialized versions of many general results such as Zariski's Main Theorem, Chow's Lemma, and blow-up descriptions of birational maps.
In this paper, we prove the moduli spaces of genus zero stable log maps to a large class of wonderful compactifications are irreducible and unirational.
We construct a new compactification of the moduli space of maps from pointed nonsingular projective stable curves to a nonsingular projective variety with prescribed ramification indices at the points. It is shown to be a proper Deligne-Mumford stack equipped with a natural virtual fundamental class.
In this paper we give different compactifications for the domain and the codomain of an affine rational map $f$ which parametrizes a hypersurface. We show that the closure of the image of this map (with possibly some other extra hypersurfaces) can be represented by a matrix of linear syzygies. We compactify $\Bbb {A}^{n-1}$ into an $(n-1)$-dimensional projective arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme of some $\Bbb {P}^N$. One particular interesting compactification of $\Bbb {A}^{n-1}$ is the toric variety associated to the Newton polytope of the polynomials defining $f$. We consider two diffe…
In this paper we compute the multiple cover Gromov-Witten integrals (analog of the Aspinwall-Morrison formula) for the unramified compactification of the moduli space of stable maps to an embedded $\PO$ in a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ with the normal bundle $\mathcal{O}_{\PO}(-1) \bigoplus \mathcal{O}_{\PO}(-1)$.
We provide a natural smooth projective compactification of the space of algebraic maps from the projective line to the projective space of dimension n by adding a divisor with simple normal crossings.
We present a new compactification $M(d,n)$ of the moduli space of self-maps of $\mathbb{CP}^1$ of degree $d$ with $n$ markings. It is constructed via GIT from the stable maps moduli space $\ ar M_{0,n}(\mathbb{CP}^1 \times \mathbb{CP}^1, (1,d))$. We show that it is the coarse moduli space of a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack and we compute its rational Picard group. Using the recursive boundary structure inherited from the stable maps space, we give an explicit algorithm for computing top-intersection numbers of divisors on $M(d,n)$. We also study the $m$-fold iteration map $M(d,n) \dashrightarro…
Drinfeld's relative compactification plays a basic role in the theory of automorphic sheaves, and its singularities encode representation-theoretic information in the form of intersection cohomology. We introduce a resolution of singularities consisting of stable maps from nodal deformations of the curve into twisted flag varieties. As an application, we prove that the twisted intersection cohomology sheaf on Drinfeld's compactification is universally locally acyclic over the moduli stack of $G$-bundles at points sufficiently antidominant relative to their defect.
We use the techniques of birational algebraic geometry and some combinatorial arguments related to weighted trees to study the structure of resolutions of compactifications of hypothetical counterexamples to the two-dimensional Jacobian Conjecture. We obtain especially detailed results for the Stein decomposition of such maps. We hope that our approach will inspire more birational geometers to seriously work on the Jacobian Conjecture.
We construct a compactification of the moduli space of Drinfeld modules of rank $r$ and level $N$ as a moduli space of $A$-reciprocal maps. This is closely related to the Satake compactification, but not exactly the same. The construction involves some technical assumptions on $N$ that are satisfied for a cofinal set of ideals $N$. In the special case $A={\mathbb F}_q[t]$ and $N=(t^n)$ we obtain a presentation for the graded ideal of Drinfeld cusp forms of level $N$ and all weights and can deduce a dimension formula for the space of cusp forms of any weight. We expect the same results in gener…
Let $M_{d}(¶^r)$ be the space of $(r+1)$-tuples $(f_0,...,f_r)$ modulo homothety, where $f_0,...,f_r$ are homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ in two variables. Let $M_{d}^{\circ}(¶^r)$ be the open subset of $M_{d}(¶^r)$ such that $f_0,...,f_r$ have no common zeros. Then $M_{d}^{\circ}(¶^r)$ parametrizes the space of holomorphic maps of degree $d$ from $¶^1$ into $¶^r$. In general the boundary divisor $M_{d}(¶^r) \setminus M_{d}^{\circ}(¶^r)$ is not normal crossing. In this paper we will give a natural stratification of this boundary and show that we can process an iterated blow-ups along the…
We use the theory of twisted stable maps to Deligne-Mumford stacks to construct compactifications of the moduli space of pairs $(X \to C, S + F)$ where $X \to C$ is a fibered surface, $S$ is a sum of sections, $F$ is a sum of marked fibers, and $(X, S + F)$ is a stable pair in the sense of the minimal model program. This generalizes the work of Abramovich-Vistoli, who compactified the moduli space of fibered surfaces without marked fibers. Furthermore, we compare our compactification to Alexeev's space of stable maps and the KSBA compactification of stable pairs. As an application, we describe…
We extend the definition of an m-stable curve introduced by Smyth to the setting of maps to a projective variety X, generalizing the definition of a Kontsevich stable map in genus one. We prove that the moduli problem of n-pointed m-stable genus one maps of class β is representable by a proper Deligne-Mumford stack \sMbar_{1,n}^m(X, β) over Spec Z[1/6]. For X = P^r, we explicitly describe all of the irreducible components of \sMbar_{1,n}(P^r,d) and \sMbar_{1,n}^m(P^r,d), and in particular deduce that \sMbar_{1,n}^m(P^r,d) is irreducible for m >= min(r,d) + n. We show that \sMbar_{1,n}^m(P^r,d)…
We study a property of cycle spaces in connection with degenerating Hodge structures of odd-weight, and construct maps from some partial compactifications of period domains to the Satake compatifications of Siegel spaces. These maps are a generalization of the maps from the toroidal compactifications of Siegel spaces to the Satake compactifications. We also show the continuity of these maps for the case of Calabi-Yau threefolds with h^{2,1}=1.
We find good dynamical compactifications for arbitrary polynomial mappings of C^2 and use them to show that the degree growth sequence satisfies a linear integral recursion formula. For maps of low topological degree we prove that the Green function is well behaved. For maps of maximum topological degree, we give normal forms.
Two compactifications of the space of holomorphic maps of fixed degree from a compact Riemann surface to a Grassmannian are studied. It is shown that the Uhlenbeck compactification has the structure of a projective scheme and is dominated by the algebraic compactification arising as a Grothendieck Quot scheme. The latter may be embedded into the moduli space of solutions to a generalized version of the vortex equations studied by Bradlow. This gives an effective way of computing certain intersection numbers (known as Gromov invariants) on the space of holomorphic maps into Grassmannians. We ca…
Kato and Usui developed a theory of partial compactifications for quotients of period domains D by arithmetic groups Γ, in an attempt to generalize the toroidal compactifications of Ash-Mumford-Rapoport-Tai to non-classical cases. Their partial compactifications, which aim to fully compactify the images of period maps, rely on a choice of fan which is strongly compatible with Γ. In particular, they conjectured the existence of a complete fan, which would serve to simultaneously compactify all period maps of a given type. In this paper, we briefly review the theory, and construct a fan which co…
We construct projective toroidal compactifications for integral models of Shimura varieties of Hodge type. We also construct integral models of the minimal (Satake-Baily-Borel) compactification. Our results essentially reduce the problem to understanding the integral models themselves. As such, they cover all previously known cases of PEL type, as well as all cases of Hodge type involving parahoric level structures. At primes where the level is hyperspecial, we show that our compactifications are canonical in a precise sense. We also provide a new proof of Y. Morita's conjecture on the everywh…
In this paper we study the relationship between two different compactifications of the space of vector bundle quotients of an arbitrary vector bundle on a curve. One is Grothendieck's Quot scheme, while the other is a moduli space of stable maps to the relative Grassmannian. We establish an essentially optimal upper bound on the dimension of the two compactifications. Based on that, we prove that for an arbitrary vector bundle, the Quot schemes of quotients of large degree are irreducible and generically smooth. We precisely describe all the vector bundles for which the same thing holds in the…
Let $M_2$ be the space of quadratic rational maps $f:{\bf P}^1\to{\bf P}^1$, modulo the action by conjugation of the group of Möbius transformations. In this paper a compactification $X$ of $M_2$ is defined, as a modification of Milnor's $\bar{M}_2\iso{\bf CP}^2$, by choosing representatives of a conjugacy class $[f]\in M_2$ such that the measure of maximal entropy of $f$ has conformal barycenter at the origin in ${\bf R}^3$, and taking the closure in the space of probability measures. It is shown that $X$ is the smallest compactification of $M_2$ such that all iterate maps $[f]\mapsto [f^n]\i…
We define a class of transversal slices in spaces which are quasi-Poisson for the action of a complex semisimple group G. This is a multiplicative analogue of Whittaker reduction. One example is the multiplicative universal centralizer of G, which is equipped with the usual symplectic structure in this way. We construct a smooth relative compactification by taking the closure of each centralizer fiber in the wonderful compactification of G. By realizing this partial compactification as a transversal in a larger quasi-Poisson variety, we show that it is smooth and log-symplectic.
We use tropical and nonarchimedean geometry to study the moduli space of genus $0$ stable maps to $\mathbb{P}^1$ relative to two points. This space is exhibited as a tropical compactification in a toric variety. Moreover, the fan of this toric variety may be interpreted as a moduli space for tropical relative stable maps with the same discrete data. As a consequence, we confirm an expectation of Bertram and the first two authors, that the tropical Hurwitz cycles are tropicalizations of classical Hurwitz cycles. As a second application, we obtain a full descendant correspondence for genus $0$ r…
The moduli space of holomorphic maps from Riemann surfaces to the Grassmannian is known to have two kinds of compactifications: Kontsevich's stable map compactification and Marian-Oprea-Pandharipande's stable quotient compactification. Over a non-singular curve, the latter moduli space is Grothendieck's Quot scheme. In this paper, we give the notion of `$ε$-stable quotients' for a positive real number $ε$, and show that stable maps and stable quotients are related by the wall-crossing phenomena. We will also discuss Gromov-Witten type invariants associated to $ε$-stable quotients, and investig…
By a result of Biswas and Dos Santos, on a smooth and projective variety over an algebraically closed field, a vector bundle trivialized by a proper and surjective map is essentially finite, that is it corresponds to a representation of the Nori fundamental group scheme. In this paper we obtain similar results for non-proper non-smooth algebraic stacks over arbitrary fields of characteristic $p>0$. As by-product we have the following partial generalization of the Biswas-Dos Santos' result in positive characteristic: on a pseudo-proper and inflexible stack of finite type over $k$ a vector bundl…
A number of compactifications familiar in complex-analytic geometry, in particular, the Baily-Borel compactification and its toroidal variants, as well as the Deligne-Mumford compactifications, can be covered by open subsets whose nonempty intersections are Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. We exploit this fact to describe the (rational) homotopy type of these spaces and the natural maps between them in terms of the simplicial sets attached to certain categories. We thus generalize an old result of Charney-Lee on the Baily-Borel compactification of A_g and recover (and rephrase) a more recent one of E…
We construct new "virtually smooth" modular compactifications of spaces of maps from nonsingular curves to smooth projective toric varieties. They generalize Givental's compactifications, when the complex structure of the curve is allowed to vary and markings are included, and are the toric counterpart of the moduli spaces of stable quotients introduced by Marian, Oprea, and Pandharipande to compactify spaces of maps to Grassmannians. A brief discussion of the resulting invariants and their (conjectural) relation with Gromov-Witten theory is also included.
Given a projective variety X and a smooth projective curve C one may consider the moduli space of maps C --> X. This space admits certain compactification whose points are called quasi-maps. In the last decade it has been discovered that in the case when X is a (partial) flag variety of a semi-simple algebraic group G (or, more generally, of any symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebra) these compactifications play an important role in such fields as geometric representation theory, geometric Langlands correspondence, geometry and topology of moduli spaces of G-bundles on algebraic surfaces, 4-dime…
We consider a class of Calabi-Yau compactifications which are constructed as a complete intersection in weighted projective space. For manifolds with one Kähler modulus we construct the mirror manifolds and calculate the instanton sum.
We consider maps on genus-$g$ surfaces with $n$ (labeled) faces of prescribed even degrees. It is known since work of Norbury that, if one disallows vertices of degree one, the enumeration of such maps is related to the counting of lattice point in the moduli space of genus-$g$ curves with $n$ labeled points and is given by a symmetric polynomial $N_{g,n}(\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_n)$ in the face degrees $2\ell_1, \ldots, 2\ell_n$. We generalize this by restricting to genus-$g$ maps that are essentially $2b$-irreducible for $b\geq 0$, which loosely speaking means that they are not allowed to possess …
Fix a noetherian scheme S. For any flat map f: X->Y of separated essentially-finite-type perfect S-schemes we define a canonical derived-category map c(f):\H(X)->f^!\H(Y), the fundamental class of f, where \H(Z) is the (pre-)Hochschild complex of an S-scheme Z and f^! is the twisted inverse image coming from Grothendieck duality theory. When Y=S and f is essentially smooth of relative dimension n, this gives an isomorphism from n-th degree relative differential forms [ =H^{-n}(\H(X)) ] to f^!O_S[-n]. The basic results concern transitivity of c(-) vis-à-vis compositions X->Y->Z, and compatibili…
A Keller map is a counterexample to the Jacobian Conjecture. In dimension two every such map, if exists, leads to a complicated set of conditions on the map between the Picard groups of suitable compactifications of the affine plane. This is essentially a combinatorial problem. Some solutions to it, that we call frameworks, are described and discussed. This second version of the paper includes several more frameworks than the first version, including one substantially more complicated framework.
We prove that the mirror map is the SYZ map for every toric Calabi-Yau surface. As a consequence one obtains an enumerative meaning of the mirror map. This involves computing genus-zero open Gromov-Witten invariants, which is done by relating them with closed Gromov-Witten invariants via compactification and using an earlier computation by Bryan-Leung.
We introduce a new compactification of the space of relative stable maps. This new method uses logarithmic geoemtry in the sense of Kato-Fontaine-Illusie rather than the expanded degeneration. The underlying structure of our log stable maps is stable in the usual sense.
We construct wonderful compactifications of the spaces of linear maps, and symmetric linear maps of a given rank as blow-ups of secant varieties of Segre and Veronese varieties. Furthermore, we investigate their birational geometry and their relations with some spaces of degree two stable maps.
In previous work, we have introduced a program aimed at studying the birational geometry of locally symmetric varieties of Type IV associated to moduli of certain projective varieties of K3 type. In particular, a concrete goal of our program is to understand the relationship between GIT and Baily-Borel compactifications for quartic K3 surfaces, K3's which are double covers of a smooth quadric surface, and double EPW sextics. In our first paper (arXiv:1607.01324), based on arithmetic considerations, we have given conjectural decompositions into simple birational transformations of the period ma…
We exhibit a smooth compactification of the moduli space of elliptic curves in a product of projective spaces with tangency along a subset of its toric boundary divisors. This is a Vakil--Zinger type of desingularization for maps to a product of projective spaces using ideas of elliptic singularities and logarithmic geometry, extending the recent work by Ranganathan--Santos-Parker--Wise. We use this to construct the virtual fundamental classes of the spaces of genus 1 maps to a special class of simple normal crossings pairs.
We construct new compactifications with good properties of moduli spaces of maps from nonsingular marked curves to a large class of GIT quotients. This generalizes from a unified perspective many particular examples considered earlier in the literature.
We develop a numerical approach to cohomology. Essentially, vector spaces and linear maps are replaced by real numbers, which represent dimensions of vector spaces and ranks of linear maps. We use this to refine ideas of Van der Geer and Schoof about the cohomology of Arakelov bundles.
Inspired by the log Gromov-Witten (or GW) theory of Gross-Siebert/Abramovich-Chen, we introduce a geometric notion of log J-holomorphic curve relative to a simple normal crossings symplectic divisor defined in [FMZ1]. Every such moduli space is characterized by a second homology class, genus, and contact data. For certain almost complex structures, we show that the moduli space of stable log J-holomorphic curves of any fixed type is compact and metrizable with respect to an enhancement of the Gromov topology. In the case of smooth symplectic divisors, our compactification is often smaller than…
