Aims: The objective of this study is to determine the general X-ray properties of the young stars in the external regions of the sigma Orionis cluster (tau ~ 3 Ma, d ~ 385 pc) and yield constraints on the X-ray emission of brown dwarfs. Methods: We carried out a careful analysis of public data taken in an unexplored region to the west of the centre of the cluster with the three EPIC cameras onboard the XMM-Newton mission. We looked for new X-ray young stars among the 41 identified X-ray sources in the area with maximum likelihood parameters L > 15 by cross-correlation with the USNO-B1, DENIS, and 2MASS databases. Results: Based on colour-colour, colour-magnitude, and hardness ratio diagrams, and previous spectroscopic, astrometric, and infrared-flux excess information, we classified the optical/near-infrared counterparts of the X-ray sources into: young stars (15), field stars (4), galaxies (19), and sources of unknown nature (3). Most of the X-ray detections, including those of nine young stars, are new. We derived the X-ray properties (e.g. temperatures, metallicities, column densities) of the twelve young stars with the largest signal-to-noise ratios. The X-ray parameters determined here are in well agreement with those found in the cluster centre, where the stellar density is higher. There is no relation between infrared excess and column density from X-ray measurement in our data. We detected flaring events in two young stars of the sample. One of them showed a very large (~ 30) relative increase in flux. Both stars showed high coronal temperatures during the observation. Finally, we determined upper limits to the flux of the young stars and bright brown dwarfs not detected by our searching algorithm.
We present XMM-Newton observations of the O supergiant Zeta Orionis (O9.7 Ib). The spectra are rich in emission lines over a wide range of ionization stages. The RGS-spectra show for the first time lines of low ion stages such as C VI, N VI, N VII, and O VII. The line profiles are symmetric and rather broad (FWHM approximately 1500 km/s) and show only a slight blue shift. With the XMM-epic spectrometer several high ions are detected in this star for the first time including Ar XVII and S XV. Simultaneous multi-temperature fits and DEM-modeling were applied to the RGS and EPIC spectra to obtain…
XMM-Newton observations of the O supergiant zeta Orionis (O9.7 Ib) extend knowledge of its high-resolution spectrum beyond the CVI line at 33.7 Angstroms and suggest a new framework for the interpretation of the X-ray spectra of single hot stars. All the lines are broad and asymmetric with similar velocity profiles. X-rays probably originate in the wind's terminal velocity regime in collisionless shocks controlled by magnetic fields rather than in cooling shocks in the acceleration zone. During post-shock relaxation, exchange of energy between ions and electrons is so slow that electron heatin…
We present a study of the newly discovered McNeil's nebula in Orion using the JHKs-band simultaneous observations with the near-infrared (NIR) camera SIRIUS on the IRSF 1.4m telescope. The cometary infrared nebula is clearly seen extending toward north and south from the NIR source (V1647 Orionis) that illuminates McNeil's nebula. The compact nebula has an apparent diameter of about 70 arcsec. The nebula is blue (bright in J) and has a cavity structure with two rims extending toward north-east and north-west. The north-east rim is brighter and sharp, while the north-west rim is diffuse. The no…
FU Orionis stars (FUors) are young low-mass eruptive stars that are thought to be accreting at high rates. They could give rise to soft X-ray emission from accretion shocks, but their X-ray properties are largely unknown. We report the first X-ray detection of the prototype star FU Orionis with XMM-Newton. Its X-ray spectrum is unusual compared to those of classical T Tauri stars (cTTS). The cool and hot components typically detected in cTTS are present but are seen through different absorption column densities. A heavily-absorbed hot component at kT > 5 keV accounts for most of the observed f…
We report the progress on our analysis of two deep XMM observations in the areas of Hubble Deep Field-North and the Groth-Westphal Strip field. We present the source detection method, Monte-Carlo simulation on source detection, and our preliminary Log N -- Log S relations. Comparing these two fields and other fields in literature, we find up to 30% variations in number counts near our flux limits, which is most likely to be due to cosmic variance. This serves as a pilot study for a more systematic investigation. The nature of the X-ray sources in the Groth-Westphal field is also discussed in t…
We present the first results of the XMM-Newton observation on the Groth-Westphal Strip Field. The scheduled exposure time was 70 [ks]. We first analyzed about 50 [ks] of calibrated and cleaned EPIC-PN data, which were the only ones we could successfully process with an early version of the SAS software applicable to these observations. A total of about 110 sources have been detected in the central 10 arcmin of the PN field of view (FOV). A cross-correlation with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Medium Deep Survey (MDS) database shows a range of morphological properties of host galaxies of the …
OTELO (OSIRIS Tunable Emission Line Object Survey) will be carried out with the OSIRIS instrument at the 10 m GTC telescope at La Palma, and is aimed to be the deepest and richest survey of emission line objects to date. The deep narrow-band optical data from OSIRIS will be complemented by means of additional observations that include: (i) an exploratory broad-band survey that is already being carried out in the optical domain, (ii) FIR and sub-mm observations to be carried with the Herschel space telescope and the GTM, and (iii) deep X-Ray observations from XMM-Newton and Chandra. Here we pres…
We present the results of our morphological and spectral study of properties of the supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946 based on data obtained with XMM-Newton. Highly inhomogeneous structures, such as the bright spots, filaments and dark voids, noted by Uchiyama et al. (2003), appear in the entire bright western portion of the shell. In addition two narrow rims are found which run parallel to each other from north to south in the western part of the remnant. No complex structures are seen in the interior region of the remnant. The X-ray spectra everywhere can be well represented with a power-law…
We present the results from a ~53 ksec XMM observation of NGC 2276. This galaxy has an unusual optical morphology with the disk of this spiral appearing to be truncated along the western edge. This XMM observation shows that the X-ray source at the western edge is a bright Intermediate X-ray Object (IXO). Its spectrum is well fit by a multi-color disk blackbody model used to fit optically thick standard accretion disks around black holes. The luminosity derived for this IXO is 1.1x10^41 erg/s in the 0.5 - 10 keV band making it one of the most luminous discovered to date. The large source lumin…
We analyze the XMM dataset of the interacting cluster of galaxies Abell 3528 located westward in the core of the Shapley Supercluster, the largest concentration of mass in the nearby Universe. A3528 is formed by two interacting clumps (A3528-N at North and A3528-S at South) separated by 0.9 $h_{70}^{-1}$ Mpc at redshift 0.053. XMM data describe these clumps as relaxed structure with an overall temperature of $4.14 \pm 0.09$ and $4.29 \pm 0.07$ keV in A3528-N and A3528-S, respectively, and a core cooler by a factor 1.4--1.5 and super-solar metal abundance in the inner 30 arcsec. These clumps ar…
We present the results of an XMM-Newton observation of the young (~2-4 Myr) cluster around the hot star sigma Orionis. In a previous paper we presented the analysis of the RGS spectrum of the central hot star; here we discuss the results of the analysis of the full EPIC field. We have detected 175 X-ray sources, 88 of which have been identified with cluster members, including very low-mass stars down to the substellar limit. We detected eleven new possible candidate members from the 2MASS catalogue. We find that late-type stars have a median log L_X/L_bol ~ -3.3, i.e. very close to the saturat…
We present XMM-Newton observations of the young (~2-5 Myr) cluster around the hot (O9.5V) star sigma Orionis AB, aimed at obtaining a high resolution RGS spectrum of the hot star as well as EPIC imaging data for the whole field. We show that the RGS spectrum of sigma Ori AB may be contaminated by weaker nearby sources which required the development of a suitable procedure to extract a clean RGS spectrum and to determine the thermal structure and wind properties of the hot star. We also report on the detection of a flare from the B2Vp star sigma Ori E and we discuss whether the flare originated…
We present in this paper a substructure and spectroimaging study of the Coma cluster of galaxies based on XMM-Newton data. XMM-Newton performed a mosaic of observations of Coma to ensure a large coverage of the cluster. We add the different pointings together and fit elliptical beta-models to the data. We subtract the cluster models from the data and look for residuals, which can be interpreted as substructure. We find several significant structures: the well-known subgroup connected to NGC4839 in the South-West of the cluster, and another substructure located between NGC 4839 and the centre o…
We present a study of the composite supernova remnant G0.9+0.1 based on observations by XMM-Newton. The EPIC spectrum shows diffuse X-ray emission from the region corresponding to the radio shell. The X-ray spectrum of the whole Pulsar Wind Nebula is well fitted by an absorbed power-law model with a photon index Gamma ~ 1.9 and a 2-10 keV luminosity of about 6.5 X 10^34 d^2_10 erg s^-1 (d_10 is the distance in units of 10 kpc). However, there is a clear softening of the X-ray spectrum with distance from the core, which is most probably related to the finite lifetime of the synchrotron emitting…
We summarize the multiwavelength properties of X-ray sources detected in the 80 ks XMM-Newton observation of the Groth-Westphal Strip. We find 23 XMM-Newton sources within the WFPC2 fields. Ten spectroscopic redshifts are available from the DEEP and CFRS projects and 4 of these show broad Mg II emission (type 1 AGNs). Two of those without any broad lines, nevertheless, have [NeV] emission which is an unambiguous signature of AGN activity, one of which is a narrow-line Seyfert 1 and the other a type 2 AGN. We have made near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic observations using the Subaru OHS/CISCO sp…
We present a temperature map and a temperature profile of the central part (r < 20' or 1/4 virial radius) of the Coma cluster. We combined 5 overlapping pointings made with XMM/EPIC/MOS and extracted spectra in boxes of 3.5' X 3.5'. The temperature distribution around the two central galaxies is remarkably homogeneous (r<10'), contrary to previous ASCA results, suggesting that the core is actually in a relaxed state. At larger distance from the cluster center we do see evidence for recent matter accretion. We confirm the cool area in the direction of NGC 4921, probably due to gas stripped from…
The face-on spiral galaxy M74 (NGC 628) was observed by XMM on 2002 February 2. In total, 21 sources are found in the inner 5' from the nucleus (after rejection of a few sources associated to foreground stars). Hardness ratios suggest that about half of them belong to the galaxy. The higher-luminosity end of the luminosity function is fitted by a power-law of slope -0.8. This can be interpreted as evidence of ongoing star formation, in analogy with the distributions found in disks of other late-type galaxies. A comparison with previous Chandra observations reveals a new ultraluminous X-ray tra…
We have surveyed with XMM-Newton the central ~0.6 deg2 region of the ELAIS-S1 field down to flux limits of ~5.5X10-16 cgs (0.5-2 keV, S band), ~2X10-15 cgs (2-10 keV, H band), and ~4X10-15 cgs (5-10 keV, HH band). We detect a total of 478 sources, 395 and 205 of which detected in the S and H bands respectively. We identified 7 clearly extended sources and estimated their redshift through X-ray spectral fits with thermal models. In four cases the redshift is consistent with z=0.4. We have computed the angular correlation function of the sources in the S and H bands, finding best fit correlation…
It has been known that Abell 2255 is not a relaxed cluster, but it is undergoing a merger. Here, we report on the analysis of the XMM-Newton observations of this cluster. The X-ray data give us the opportunity to reveal the complexity of the cluster, especially its temperature distribution. The integrated spectrum is well fitted by a single temperature thermal model, indicating a mean temperature of ~7 keV. However, the cluster is not isothermal at this temperature: its eastern regions are significantly cooler, at ~5.5 keV, whilst towards the West the temperature reaches ~8.5 keV. These temper…
RX J0852.0-4622 is a shell type supernova remnant with a power law spectrum in the south-eastern corner of the Vela supernova remnant. We report XMM-Newton observations of three fields centered on the rim of the remnant and confirm the power law shape of the spectra with no prominent emission lines as previously obtained with ASCA. The emission line feature at ~4.1 keV indicated in the ASCA/SIS spectrum of the northern field is detected and found in the southern and western fields, as well, with a total significance of slightly more than 4 sigmas. The line position is improved and the feature …
We report the discovery of X-rays from both components of Cepheus A, East and West, with the XMM-Newton Observatory. HH 168 joins the ranks of other energetic Herbig Haro objects that are sources of T~10^6 K X-ray emission. The HH 168 effective temperature is T = 5.8 (+3.5,-2.3) x 10^6 K and its unabsorbed luminosity is 1.1 x 10^29 erg s^-1, making it hotter and less luminous than other representatives of its class. We also detect prominent X-ray emission from the complex of compact radio sources believed to be the power sources for Cep A. We call this source HWX and it is distinguished by its…
In the framework of the study of supernova remnants and their complex interaction with the interstellar medium, we report on an XMM-Newton EPIC observation of the Galactic supernova remnant W49B. We investigate the spatial distribution of the chemical and physical properties of the plasma, so as to get important constraints on the physical scenario, on the dynamics of the supernova explosion, and on the interaction of the supernova remnant with the ambient interstellar clouds. We present line images, equivalent width maps, and a spatially resolved spectral analysis of a set of homogeneous regi…
We present results from XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer observations of the prototypical starburst galaxy M82. These high resolution spectra represent the best X-ray spectra to date of a starburst galaxy. A complex array of lines from species over a wide range of temperatures is seen, the most prominent being due to Lyman-alpha emission from abundant low Z elements such as N, O, Ne, Mg and Si. Emission lines from Helium-like charge states of the same elements are also seen in emission, as are strong lines from the entire Fe-L series. Further, the OVII line complex is resolved and is…
We report the results of the XMM-Newton observation of the Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) in the composite supernova remnant G0.9+0.1 located in the Galactic Center region. Thanks to the sensitivity of the EPIC cameras, we focus on the first spectral analysis of large and small-scale structures of this PWN using MOS and PN data in combination. Our spatially resolved spectral analysis at large-scale offers a clear indication of a softening of the photon index with distance from the centroid of the nebula (from Gamma_{core}=1.12^{+0.45}_{-0.48} to Gamma=2.42^{+0.19}_{-0.19}), as observed in other know…
We present the observation of the Tycho supernova remnant obtained with the EPIC and RGS instruments onboard the XMM-Newton satellite. We compare images and azimuthally averaged radial profiles in emission lines from different elements (silicon and iron) and different transition lines of iron (Fe L and Fe K). While the Fe XVII L line and Si XIII K line images are globally spatially coincident, the Fe K emission clearly peaks at a smaller radius, indicating a higher temperature toward the reverse shock. This is qualitatively the profile expected when the reverse shock, after travelling through …
On September 21, 2006, an intense (~10^39 erg/s) and short (20 ms) burst was detected by Swift BAT at a position consistent with that of the candidate Anomalous X-ray Pulsar, CXOU J164710.2-455216, discovered by Chandra in 2005. Swift follow-up observations began about 13 hours after the event and found the source at a 1-10keV flux level of about 4.5 x 10^-11 erg/s/cm^2, i.e. ~300 times brighter than measured 5 days earlier by XMM. We report the results obtained from Swift BAT observations of the burst and subsequent Swift XRT observations carried out during the first four months after the bur…
XMM-Newton observations are presented for the z=0.83 cluster of galaxies MS1054-0321, the highest redshift cluster in the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey (EMSS). The temperature inferred by the XMM-Newton data, T=7.2 (+0.7, -0.6) keV, is much lower than the temperature previously reported from ASCA data, T=12.3 (+3.1, -2.2) keV (Donahue et al. 1998), and a little lower than the Chandra temperature, T=10.4(+1.7, -1.5) keV, determined by Jeltema et al. 2001. The discrepancy between the newly derived temperature and the previously derived temperatures is discussed in detail. If one al…
Using the mosaic of six XMM-Newton observations, we study the hydrodynamic state of the A3562, a cluster in the center of the Shapley Supercluster. The X-ray image reveals a sharp surface brightness gradient within the core of A3562, a 200 kpc ridge extending to the south-west. A nearby group, SC1329-313, imaged within this program also exhibits a tail aligned with the ridge. Study of the pressure and entropy identified the ridge with a 40% pressure enhancement. An associated Mach number of 1.15 relative to a polytropic sound speed for a 5 keV plasma requires the velocity of the group to be 14…
We present new X-ray imaging and spectroscopy of a composite supernova remnant G327.1-1.1 using the Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observatories. G327.1-1.1 has an unusual morphology consisting of a symmetric radio shell and an off center nonthermal component that indicates the presence of a pulsar wind nebula (PWN). Radio observations show a narrow finger of emission extending from the PWN structure towards the northwest. X-ray studies with ASCA, ROSAT, and BeppoSAX revealed elongated extended emission and a compact source at the tip of the finger that may be coincident with the actual pulsar. …
We present preliminary results of the XMM-Newton 50 ksec observation of the Perseus cluster. The global east/west asymmetry of the gas temperature and surface brightness distributions, approximately aligned with the chain of bright galaxies, suggests an ongoing merger, although the modest degree of the observed asymmetry certainly excludes a major merger interpretation. The chain of galaxies probably traces the filament along which accretion has started some time ago and is continuing at the present time. A cold and dense (low entropy) cluster core like Perseus is probably well "protected" aga…
We present the first imaging X-ray observation of the highly inclined (i = 78 deg) Sab Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 6810 using XMM-Newton, which reveals soft X-ray emission that extends out to a projected height of ~7 kpc away from the plane of the galaxy. The soft X-ray emission beyond the optical disk of the galaxy is most plausibly extra-planar, although it could instead come from large galactic radius. This extended X-ray emission is spatially associated with diffuse H-alpha emission, in particular with a prominent 5-kpc-long H-alpha filament on the north-west of the disk. A fraction <~35% of the …
We present new results coming from the observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7--3946 (also G347.3--0.5) performed in five distinct pointings with the EPIC instrument on board the satellite XMM-Newton. RX J1713.7--3946 is a shell-type SNR dominated by synchrotron radiation in the X-rays. Its emission (emission measure and photon index) as well as the absorption along the line-of-sight has been characterized over the entire SNR. The X-ray mapping of the absorbing column density has revealed strong well constrained variations (0.4 10^22 cm^-2 < NH < 1.1 10^22 cm^-2) and, particular…
We present a detailed analysis of the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of Abell 2626 focused on the X-ray and radio interactions. Within the region of the radio mini-halo (~70 kpc), there are substructures which are probably produced by the central radio source and the cooling core. We find that there is no obvious correlation between the radio bars and the X-ray image. The morphology of Abell 2626 is more complex than that of the standard X-ray radio bubbles seen in other cool core clusters. Thus, Abell 2626 provides a challenge to models for the cooling flow -- radio source interaction. W…
We present results of a 37 ks observation of CL 0016+16 with the XMM-Newton EPIC instrument. Within 1.5 arcmin of the cluster centre we measure a gas temperature of kT = 9.13^{+0.24}_{-0.22} keV and an abundance of 0.22^{+0.04}_{-0.03} times the solar value (1 sigma uncertainties). This significant improvement over previous measurements has allowed us to revise the estimate of the Hubble constant based on CL 0016+16 to 68 +/- 8 km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1} (random error only), close to the value from the Hubble Space Telescope distance-scale project. The total gravitating mass within a radius of 248 kpc…
(abridged) We present a study based on XMM data of RX J0256.5+0006, a medium distant (z=0.36) galaxy cluster found in the Bright SHARC catalog. The intracluster medium shows a bimodal structure: one main cluster component and a substructure in the west. Despite the indication of interaction we do not find any sign of temperature gradients. Due to the non-symmetric form of the main cluster we extract surface brightness profiles in different sectors around its centre. We see large variations between the profiles, which we quantify by beta-model fitting. The corresponding r_c's vary between 0.1-0…
We present the analysis of the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM-Newton) European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) data of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 109 (G109.1-1.0). CTB 109 is associated with the anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 1E 2259+586 and has an unusual semi-circular morphology in both the X-ray and the radio, and an extended X-ray bright interior region known as the `Lobe'. The deep EPIC mosaic image of the remnant shows no emission towards the west where a giant molecular cloud complex is located. No morphological connection between the Lobe and the AXP is found. We find remarka…
Using archival X-ray data, we find that the catalog location of the X-ray binary Scutum X-1 (Sct X-1) is incorrect, and that the correct location is that of the X-ray source AX J183528-0737, which is 15' to the west. Our identification is made on the basis of the 112-s pulse period for this object detected in an XMM-Newton observation, as well as spatial coincidence between AX J183528-0737 and previous X-ray observations. Based on the XMM-Newton data and archival RXTE data, we confirm secular spin-down over 17 years with period derivative Pdot~3.9e-9 s/s, but do not detect a previously reporte…
Aims: Using XMM-Newton data, we have aimed to study the nuclear outflow of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 in X-rays with respect to its morphology and to spectral variations along the outflow. Methods: We analysed XMM-Newton RGS spectra, RGS brightness profiles in cross-dispersion direction, narrow band RGS and EPIC images and EPIC PN brightness profiles of the nuclear region and of the outflow of NGC 253. Results: We detect a diversity of emission lines along the outflow of NGC 253. This includes the He-like ions of Si, Mg, Ne and O and their corresponding ions in the next higher ionisat…
In the framework of the study of supernova remnants and their complex interaction with the interstellar medium and the circumstellar material, we focus on the galactic supernova remnant W49B. Its morphology exhibits an X-ray bright elongated nebula, terminated on its eastern end by a sharp perpendicular structure aligned with the radio shell. The X-ray spectrum of W49B is characterized by strong K emission lines from Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. There is a variation of the temperature in the remnant with the highest temperature found in the eastern side and the lowest one in the western side. The an…
We present an XMM-Newton observation of the long-overlooked radio source G350.1-0.3. The X-ray spectrum of G350.1-0.3 can be fit by a shocked plasma with two components: a high-temperature (1.5 keV) region with a low ionization time scale and enhanced abundances, plus a cooler (0.36 keV) component in ionization equilibrium and with solar abundances. The X-ray spectrum and the presence of non-thermal, polarized, radio emission together demonstrate that G350.1-0.3 is a young, luminous supernova remnant (SNR), for which archival HI and 12-CO data indicate a distance of 4.5 kpc. The diameter of th…
Using a combination of Chandra and XMM observations, we confirmed the presence of a significant velocity gradient along the NE/E-W/SW direction in the intracluster gas of the cluster Abell 576. The results are consistent with a previous ASCA SIS analysis of this cluster. The error weighted average over ACIS-S3, EPIC MOS 1 & 2 spectrometers for the maximum velocity difference is >3.3E03 km/s at the 90% confidence level, similar to the velocity limits estimated indirectly for the "bullet" cluster (1E0657-56). The probability that the velocity gradient is generated by standard random gain fluctua…
We report the discovery of a transient radio source 2.7 arcsec (0.1 pc projected distance) South of the Galactic Center massive black hole, Sagittarius A*. The source flared with a peak of at least 80 mJy in March 2004. The source was resolved by the Very Large Array into two components with a separation of ~0.7 arcsec and characteristic sizes of ~0.2 arcsec. The two components of the source faded with a power-law index of 1.1 +/- 0.1. We detect an upper limit to the proper motion of the Eastern component of ~3 x 10^3 km s^-1 relative to Sgr A*. We detect a proper motion of ~10^4 km s^-1 for t…
Wide-band Suzaku data on the merging cluster Abell 3667 were examined for hard X-ray emission in excess to the known thermal component. Suzaku detected X-ray signals in the wide energy band from 0.5 to 40 keV. The hard X-ray (> 10 keV) flux observed by the HXD around the cluster center cannot be explained by a simple extension of the thermal emission with average temperature of ~7 keV. The emission is most likely an emission from a very hot (kT > 13.2 keV) thermal component around the cluster center, produced via a strong heating process in the merger. In the north-west radio relic, no signatu…
We present an analysis of XMM-Newton observations of the superbubble 30 Dor C and compare the results with the predictions from the standard wind-blown bubble model. We find that the observed X-ray spectra cannot be fitted satisfactorily with the model alone and that there is evidence for nonthermal X-ray emission, which is particularly important at > 4 keV. The total unabsorbed 0.1-10 keV luminosities of the eastern and western parts of the bubble are ~3 10^36 erg/s and ~5 10^36 erg/s, respectively. The unabsorbed 0.1-10 keV luminosity of the bubble model is 4 10^36 erg/s and so the power-law…
We identify active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the Groth-Westphal Survey Strip (GSS) using the independent and complementary selection techniques of optical spectroscopy and photometric variability. We discuss the X-ray properties of these AGN using Chandra/XMM data for this region. From a sample of 576 galaxies with high quality spectra we identify 31 galaxies with AGN signatures. Seven of these have broad emission lines (Type 1 AGNs). We also identify 26 galaxies displaying nuclear variability in HST WFPC2 images of the GSS separated by ~7 years. The primary overlap of the two selected AGN samp…
