We present a detailed analysis of the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of Abell 2626 focused on the X-ray and radio interactions. Within the region of the radio mini-halo (~70 kpc), there are substructures which are probably produced by the central radio source and the cooling core. We find that there is no obvious correlation between the radio bars and the X-ray image. The morphology of Abell 2626 is more complex than that of the standard X-ray radio bubbles seen in other cool core clusters. Thus, Abell 2626 provides a challenge to models for the cooling flow -- radio source interaction. We identified two soft X-ray (0.3--2 keV) peaks with the two central cD nuclei; one of them has an associated hard X-ray (2--10 keV) point source. We suggest that the two symmetric radio bars can be explained by two precessing jets ejected from an AGN. Beyond the central regions, we find two extended X-ray sources to the southwest and northeast of the cluster center which are apparently associated with merging subclusters. The main Abell 2626 cluster and these two subclusters are extended along the direction of the Perseus-Pegasus supercluster, and we suggest that Abell 2626 is preferentially accreting subclusters and groups from this large-scale structure filament. We also find an extended X-ray source associated with the cluster S0 galaxy IC 5337; the morphology of this source suggests that it is infalling from the west, and is not associated with the southwest subcluster, as had been previously suggested.
From ROSAT data, the bright X-ray cluster Abell 85 was found to show a roughly symmetrical shape, on to which are superimposed several features, among which: (1) a blob or group of galaxies falling on to the main cluster, with the gas in the impact region probably hotter and the galaxies in that zone showing enhanced star formation; (2) a filament, either diffuse or made of small groups of galaxies, extending at least 4 Mpc from the cluster (Durret et al. 1998). Preliminary results obtained from XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of Abell 85 and its filament will be presented.
We study the X-ray morphology and dynamics of the galaxy cluster Abell 514. Also, the relation between the X-ray properties and Faraday Rotation measures of this cluster are investigated in order to study the connection of magnetic fields and the intra-cluster medium. We use two combined XMM - Newton pointings that are split into three distinct observations. The data allow us to evaluate the overall cluster properties like temperature and metallicity with high accuracy. Additionally, a temperature map and the metallicity distribution are computed, which are used to study the dynamical state of…
Our XMM-Newton observations of Abell 85 confirm the extended 4 Mpc filament first detected with ROSAT, which has an X-ray temperature of about 2 keV and is probably made of groups falling on to the cluster. A comparison of the temperature map with numerical simulations show that Abell 85 had intense merging activity in the past and is not fully relaxed, even in the central region. Finally, a deprojected temperature profile has been calculated and used, together with the suface brightness, to estimate the entropy and pressure profiles. Abell 85 only presents a mild flattening of the entropy pro…
We have observed with XMM-Newton the extended 4 Mpc filament detected by the ROSAT PSPC in the neighbourhood of the cluster of galaxies Abell 85. We confirm that there is an extended feature, aligned at the same position angle as the major axis of the central cD, the bright cluster galaxies, and nearby groups and clusters. We find that the X-ray emission from the filament is best described by thermal emission with a temperature of about 2 keV, which is significantly lower than the ambient cluster medium, but is significantly higher than anticipated for a gas in a weakly bound extended filament…
It has been known that Abell 2255 is not a relaxed cluster, but it is undergoing a merger. Here, we report on the analysis of the XMM-Newton observations of this cluster. The X-ray data give us the opportunity to reveal the complexity of the cluster, especially its temperature distribution. The integrated spectrum is well fitted by a single temperature thermal model, indicating a mean temperature of ~7 keV. However, the cluster is not isothermal at this temperature: its eastern regions are significantly cooler, at ~5.5 keV, whilst towards the West the temperature reaches ~8.5 keV. These temper…
The results from XMM-Newton observations of the relaxed cluster of galaxies Abell~496 are presented. The spatially-resolved X-ray spectra taken by the European Photon Imaging Cameras show a temperature drop and a Fe abundance increase in the intra-cluster medium (ICM) towards the cD galaxy at the cluster center. The abundances of Si and S also show a central enhancement. High resolution soft X-ray spectra obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometers provides a strong constraint on the temperature structure in the central cool plasma. Furthermore, the O abundance at the cluster core is ac…
We present the results of an analysis of broad band UV observations of the central regions of Abell 1795 observed with the optical monitor on XMM-Newton. As have been found with other UV observations of the central regions of clusters of galaxies, we find evidence for star formation. However, we also find evidence for absorption in the cD galaxy on a more extended scale than has been seen with optical imaging. We also report the first UV observation of part of the filamentary structure seen in H$α$, X-rays and very deep U band imaging. The part of the filament we see is very blue with UV colou…
We report the results from a spatially resolved spectroscopy study with XMM-Newton on the relaxed cluster of galaxies Abell 478. From the EPIC data we extract a temperature profile and radial abundance profiles for Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ca, Fe and Ni. The abundance profiles follow the same trends as observed in other clusters. The spectra of the core of the cluster can be best fitted with a multi-temperature model. We argue that this multi-temperature behavior is mostly due to projection effects, because of the strong temperature gradient in the core. Contributions from other effects, for example, in…
We have observed the cluster of galaxies Abell 85 with XMM-Newton. These data have allowed us to confirm in a previous paper the existence of the extended 4 Mpc filament detected by the ROSAT PSPC in the neighbourhood of this cluster, and to determine an X-ray temperature of about about 2 keV. We now present a thorough analysis of the properties of the X-ray gas in the cluster itself, including temperature and metallicity maps for the entire cluster. These results show that Abell 85 had intense merging activity in the past and is not fully relaxed, even in the central region. We have also dete…
The initial results from XMM-Newton observations of the rich cluster of galaxies Abell 1795 are presented. The spatially-resolved X-ray spectra taken by the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC) show a temperature drop at a radius of $\sim 200$ kpc from the cluster center, indicating that the ICM is cooling. Both the EPIC and the Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) spectra extracted from the cluster center can be described by an isothermal model with a temperature of $\sim 4$ keV. The volume emission measure of any cool component ($<1$ keV) is less than a few % of the hot component at the …
We present a study of the medium distant cluster of galaxies Abell 1835 based on XMM-Newton data. The high quality of XMM-Newton data enable us to perform spectro-imaging of the cluster up to large radii. We determine the gas and total mass profiles based on the hydrostatic approach using the beta-model and the temperature profile. For the determination of the temperature profile of the ICM, which is needed for the mass determination, we apply a double background subtraction, which accounts for the various kinds of background present (particle and astrophysical background). We find a basically…
Abell 399 and Abell 401 are both rich clusters of galaxies, at temperatures 7.2keV and 8.5keV respectively. They lie at a projected separation of ~3Mpc, forming a close pair. We have observed the system with the XMM-Newton satellite. The data of each cluster show significant departures from our idealised picture of relaxed rich clusters. There is also evidence for enhanced X-ray flux in the region between the two, where the temperature is higher than our expectations. Although tidal or compression effects might affect the large scale structure of the two clusters, we show that these cannot acc…
Aims. We map the temperature structure of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) within a nearly complete X-ray flux limited sample of galaxy clusters in the redshift range z=[0.045,0.096]. Our sample contains seven bright clusters of galaxies observed with XMM-Newton: Abell 399, Abell 401, Abell 478, Abell 1795, Abell 2029, Abell 2065, Abell 2256. Methods. We use a multi-scale spectral mapping algorithm especially designed to map spectroscopic observables from X-ray extended emission of the ICM. Derived from a former algorithm using Haar wavelets, our algorithm is now implemented with B-spline wavele…
We propose a new Monte Carlo method to study extended X-ray sources with the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) aboard {\sl XMM-Newton}. The smoothed particle inference (SPI) technique, described in a companion paper, is applied here to the EPIC data for the clusters of galaxies Abell 1689, Centaurus, and RX J0658-55 (the ``bullet cluster''). We aim to show the advantages of this method of simultaneous spectral and spatial modeling over traditional X-ray spectral analysis. In Abell 1689 we confirm our earlier findings about structure in the temperature distribution and produce a high-resolu…
We analyze the XMM dataset of the interacting cluster of galaxies Abell 3528 located westward in the core of the Shapley Supercluster, the largest concentration of mass in the nearby Universe. A3528 is formed by two interacting clumps (A3528-N at North and A3528-S at South) separated by 0.9 $h_{70}^{-1}$ Mpc at redshift 0.053. XMM data describe these clumps as relaxed structure with an overall temperature of $4.14 \pm 0.09$ and $4.29 \pm 0.07$ keV in A3528-N and A3528-S, respectively, and a core cooler by a factor 1.4--1.5 and super-solar metal abundance in the inner 30 arcsec. These clumps ar…
Abell 1758 was classified as a single rich cluster of galaxies by Abell, but a ROSAT observation showed that this system consists of two distinct clusters (A1758N and A1758S) separated by approximately $8\arcmin$ (a projected separation of 2 Mpc in the rest frame of the clusters). Only a few galaxy redshifts have been published for these two clusters, but the redshift of the Fe lines in the Chandra and XMM-Newton spectra shows that the recessional velocities of A1758N and A1758S are within 2,100 km s$^{-1}$. Thus, these two clusters most likely form a gravitationally bound system, but our imag…
We present results from the XMM-Newton observation of the non-cooling flow cluster A1060. Large effective area of XMM-Newton enables us to investigate the nature of this cluster in unprecedented detail. From the observed surface brightness distribution, we have found that the gravitational mass distribution is well described by the NFW profile but with a central density slope of ~1.5. We have undoubtedly detected a radial temperature decrease of as large as ~30% from the center to the outer region (r ~13'), which seems much larger than that expected from the temperature profile averaged over n…
We present the nonuniform distribution of temperature and abundance in the angular extent of 10'(1.4 Mpc) in A1650 observed by XMM-Newton. Spectral analysis was carried out in 19 systematically-subdivided regions, and in 15 specified regions referred to the hardness ratio (HR) map. The value of HR, defined as the ratio of counts in the 1.6-10 keV band to those in the 0.8-1.6 keV, is an indicator to investigate the spatial variation of spectral features. The temperature and abundance were obtained to be 4-6 keV and 0.2-0.5 solar value with average values of 5.62+0.05-0.07 keV and 0.36+0.02-0.01…
We report on a 120 ks XMM-Newton observation of the galaxy cluster Abell 2597. Results from both the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) and the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) are presented. From EPIC we obtain radial profiles of temperature, density and abundance, and use these to derive cooling time and entropy. We illustrate corrections to these profiles for projection and point spread function (PSF) effects. At the spatial resolution available to XMM-Newton, the temperature declines by around a factor of two in the central 150 kpc or so in radius, and the abundance increases from …
Using the mosaic of nine XMM-Newton observations, we study the hydrodynamic state of the merging cluster of galaxies Abell 3266. The high quality of the spectroscopic data and large field of view of XMM-Netwon allow us to determine the thermodynamic conditions of the intracluster medium on scales of order of 50 kpc. A high quality entropy map reveals the presence of an extended region of low entropy gas, running from the primary cluster core toward the northeast along the nominal merger axis. The mass of the low entropy gas amounts to approximately 2e13 solar masses, which is comparable to the…
(Abridged) The galaxy cluster Abell 2218, at z=0.171, is well-known for the discrepancy between mass estimates derived from X-ray and strong lensing analyses. With the present XMM observation, we trace the gas density and temperature profiles out to a radius of ~ 1400 h_70^-1 kpc (approximately the virial radius of the cluster). The surface brightness profile is well fitted over three orders of magnitude with a beta model, with a core radius of 0.'95 and β=0.63. The projected temperature profile declines steeply with radius (by ~50%), and is well described by a polytrope with parameters t_0=8.…
Abell 1689 is a galaxy cluster at $z=0.183$ where previous measurements of its mass using various techniques gave discrepant results. We present a new detailed measurement of the mass with the data based on X-ray observations with the European Photon Imaging Camera aboard the XMM-Newton Observatory, determined by using an unparameterized deprojection technique. Fitting the total mass profile to a Navarro-Frenk-White model yields halo concentration $c=7.2^{+1.6}_{-2.4}$ and $r_{200}=1.13 \pm 0.21 h^{-1} \mathrm{Mpc}$, corresponding to a mass which is less than half of what is found from gravita…
Recent Chandra and XMM X-ray observations of rich clusters of galaxies have shown that the amount of hot gas which is cooling below ~1 keV is generally more modest than previous estimates. Yet, the real level of the cooling flows, if any, remains to be clarified by making observations sensitive to different temperature ranges. As a follow-up of the FUSE observations reporting a positive detection of the OVI doublet at 1032, 1038 Angstrom in the cluster of galaxies Abell 2597, which provided the first direct evidence for ~3x10^5 K gas in a cluster of galaxies, we have carried out sensitive spec…
We present a detailed X-ray study of the intracluster medium (ICM) of the nearby, cool-core galaxy cluster Abell 478, with Chandra and XMM observations. Using a wavelet smoothing hardness analysis, we derive detailed temperature maps of A478, revealing a surprising amount of temperature structure. The broad band Chandra spectral fits yield temperatures which are significantly hotter than those from XMM, but the Fe ionization temperature shows good agreement. We show that the temperature discrepancy is slightly reduced when comparing spectra from regions selected to enclose nearly isothermal ga…
We present a mosaic of five XMM-Newton observations of the nearby ($z=0.0594$) merging galaxy cluster Abell 3266. We use the spectro-imaging capabilities of \xmm to build precise (projected) temperature, entropy, pressure and Fe abundance maps. The temperature map exhibits a curved, large-scale hot region, associated with elevated entropy levels, very similar to that foreseen in numerical simulations. The pressure distribution is disturbed in the central region but is remarkably regular on large scales. The Fe abundance map indicates that metals are inhomogeneously distributed across the clust…
We present detailed spatially-resolved spectroscopy results of the observation of Abell 1835 using the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC) and the Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) on the XMM-Newton observatory. Abell 1835 is a luminous ($10^{46}$ ergs ${s}^{-1}$), medium redshift ($z=0.2523$), X-ray emitting cluster of galaxies. The observations support the interpretation that large amounts of cool gas are present in a multi-phase medium surrounded by a hot ($kT_{e}$=8.2 keV) outer envelope. We detect O VIII Ly$α$ and two Fe XXIV complexes in the RGS spectrum. The emission measure of …
In this paper, a review is given of methods useful for XMM-Newton EPIC data analysis of extended sources, along with some applications to a bright massive cluster of galaxies at z=0.2, Abell 209. This may constitute an introduction to that kind of advanced analysis, complementing cookbooks that can be found over the internet, the XMM-Newton EPIC calibration status document (Kirsch, 2002), and the data analysis workshops organised in VILSPA, which were only dedicated so far to point sources analysis. In addition, new spectro-imaging techniques are proposed, in order to measure for instance the …
We present a method from an X-ray observation of a galaxy cluster to measure the radial profile of the dark matter velocity dispersion, sigma_DM, and to compare the dark matter ``temperature'' defined as mu m_p sigma_DM**2 / k_B with the gas temperature. The method is applied to the XMM-Newton observation of Abell 1795. The ratio between the specific energy of the dark matter and that of the intracluster medium (ICM), which can be defined as beta_DM in analogy with beta_spec, is found to be less than unity everywhere ranging \~0.3-0.8. In other words, the ICM temperature is higher than the dar…
The Abell cluster of galaxies A3667 was observed with XMM-Newton in 6 partially overlapping pointings. We present here the resulting X-ray surface brightness, temperature, entropy and pressure maps and discuss the structure of this cluster on scales from 0.1 to 30 arcminutes. Based on these observations we refine the origin of the A3667 cold front to the displacement of the low entropy, high metal abundance gas from the current pressure peak of the cluster. We argue that the mushroom shape of the cold front observed here is similar to what is seen in some numerical simulations. We also present…
We introduce a new multiscale restoration algorithm for images with few photons counts and its use for denoising XMM data. We use a thresholding of the wavelet space so as to remove the noise contribution at each scale while preserving the multiscale information of the signal. Contrary to other algorithms the signal restoration process is the same whatever the signal to noise ratio is. Thresholds according to a Poisson noise process are indeed computed analytically at each scale thanks to the use of the unnormalized Haar wavelet transform. Promising preliminary results are obtained on X-ray da…
We present results from three XMM-Newton observations of the M31 low mass X-ray binary XMMU J004314.4+410726.3 (Bo 158), spaced over 3 days in 2004, July. Bo 158 was the first dipping LMXB to be discovered in M31. Periodic intensity dips were previously seen to occur on a 2.78-hr period, due to absorption in material that is raised out of the plane of the accretion disc. The report of these observations stated that the dip depth was anti-correlated with source intensity. However, our new observations do not favour a strict intensity dependance, but rather suggest that the dip variation is due …
We analyzed the data for the nearby cluster of galaxies Abell 2255 from archival XMM-Newton observations in order to search for the properties of X-ray point like structures in the outskirts. 11 point-like X-ray emission is detected. Detected X-ray sources are then observed with the 1.5 meter RTT-150 at Turkish National Observatory for possible optical counterparts. The cluster field is covered through 5 ANDOR photometer pointings. 3 sources have no optical follow-ups. 2 QSOs and 1 star are observed from the field. For 4 sources we have obtained the corresponding redhifts. The cumulative log(N…
Using a combination of Chandra and XMM observations, we confirmed the presence of a significant velocity gradient along the NE/E-W/SW direction in the intracluster gas of the cluster Abell 576. The results are consistent with a previous ASCA SIS analysis of this cluster. The error weighted average over ACIS-S3, EPIC MOS 1 & 2 spectrometers for the maximum velocity difference is >3.3E03 km/s at the 90% confidence level, similar to the velocity limits estimated indirectly for the "bullet" cluster (1E0657-56). The probability that the velocity gradient is generated by standard random gain fluctua…
We present multi-frequency, multi-epoch radio imaging of the complex radio source B2151+174 in the core of the cluster, Abell 2390 (z~0.23). From new and literature data we conclude that the FRII-powerful radio source is the combination of a compact, core-dominated `medium-symmetric object' (MSO) with a more extended, steeper spectrum mini-halo. B2151+174 is unusual in a number of important aspects: i) it is one of the most compact and flat spectrum sources in a cluster core known; ii) it shows a complex, compact twin-jet structure in a north-south orientation; iii) the orientation of the jets…
The low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) associated with the M31 globular cluster Bo 158 is known to exhibit intensity dips on a ~2.78 hr period. This is due to obscuration of the X-ray source on the orbital period by material on the outer edge of the accretion disc. However, the depth of dipping varied from <10% to \~83% in three archival XMM-Newton observations of Bo 158. Previous work suggested that the dip depth was anticorrelated with the X-ray luminosity. However, we present results from three new XMM-Newton observations that suggest that the evolution of dipping is instead due to precession of …
We present spin-resolved X-ray data of the neutron star binary Her X-1. We find evidence that the Iron line at 6.4 keV originates from the same location as the blackbody X-ray component. The line width and energy varies over both the spin period and the 35 day precession period. We also find that the correlation between the soft and hard X-ray light curves varies over the 35 day period.
We present the analysis of 30 ksec of Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 1835. Overall, the X-ray image shows a relaxed morphology, although we detect substructure in in the inner 30 kpc radius. Spectral analysis shows a steep drop in the X-ray gas temperature from ~12 keV in the outer regions of the cluster to ~4 keV in the core. The Chandra data provide tight constraints on the gravitational potential of the cluster which can be parameterized by a Navarro, Frenk & White (1997) model. The X-ray data allow us to measure the X-ray gas mass fraction as a function of radius, leading…
Evidence for excess extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission over a tail of X-ray gas bremsstrahlung emission has been building up recently, but in some cases remains controversial, mostly due to the moderate quality of the EUV data. In order to improve the signal to noise ratio in the EUV, we have performed the wavelet analysis and image reconstructions for five clusters of galaxies observed both at EUV and X-ray energies with the EUVE and ROSAT satellites respectively. The profiles of the EUV and X-ray reconstructed images all differ at a very large confidence level and an EUV excess over a therma…
We present X-ray spatial and spectral analysis of the Chandra data from the central 400 kpc (H0 = 50 km/s/Mpc) of the cluster of galaxies Abell 1795. The plasma temperature rises outwards by a factor of 3, whereas the iron abundance decreases by a factor of 4. The spatial distribution of Oxygen, Neon, Sulphur, Silicon and Iron shows that supernovae Type Ia dominate the metal enrichment process of the cluster plasma within the inner 150 kpc. Resolving both the gas density and temperature in 9 radial bins, we recover the gravitational mass density profile and show that it flattens within 100 kpc…
The nearby cluster Abell 194 hosts two luminous, distorted radio galaxies. Both reside within the cluster's core region, being separated in projection by only 100 kpc. It is often suggested that tailed radio galaxies such as these reside in clusters that are under formation and are accreting new material from their outskirts. In this paper we study the intriguing appearance of Abell 194, and test whether the cluster and radio source dynamics are consistent with the cluster formation/merger model. We analyse data from the XMM-Newton satellite and previously unpublished observations with the Ver…
About half of the baryons in the local Universe are invisible and - according to simulations - their dominant fraction resides in filaments connecting clusters of galaxies in the form of low density gas with temperatures in the range of 10^5<T<10^7 K. The existence of this warm-hot intergalactic medium was never unambiguously proven observationally in X-rays. We probe the low gas densities expected in the large scale structure filaments by observing a filament connecting the massive clusters of galaxies A 222 and A 223 (z=0.21) which has a favorable orientation approximately along our line of …
Chandra ACIS-S observations of the galaxy cluster A3112 feature the presence of an excess of X-ray emission above the contribution from the diffuse hot gas, which can be equally well modeled with an additional non-thermal power-law model or with a low-temperature thermal model of low metal abundance. We show that the excess emission cannot be due to uncertainties in the background subtraction or in the Galactic HI column density. Calibration uncertainties in the ACIS detector that may affect our results are addressed by comparing the Chandra data to XMM MOS and PN spectra. While differences be…
We carried out observations of the central and 20' east offset regions of the cluster of galaxies Abell 1060 with Suzaku. Spatially resolved X-ray spectral analysis has revealed temperature and abundance profiles of Abell 1060 out to 27' ~ 380; /h_70 kpc, which corresponded to ~ 0.25; r_180. Temperature decrease of the intra cluster medium from 3.4 keV at the center to 2.2 keV in the outskirt region are clearly observed. Abundances of Si, S and Fe also decrease by more than 50% from the center to the outer, while Mg shows fairly constant abundance distribution at ~ 0.7 solar within r < 17'. O …
Until the advent of XMM-Newton, the cluster soft excess (CSE) was the subject of some controversy due to both data analysis issues and uncertainties with the soft excess emission mechanism. XMM-Newton observations have finally laid to rest any doubts as to the existence of the CSE and have also given tantalising clues as to the nature of its emission mechanism. Here we report on the analysis of XMM-Newton observations of a number of CSE clusters in an attempt to improve the analysis and understanding of the CSE. Included as part of the study is an analysis of the effects of background subtract…
Combining XMM-Newton and Chandra data, we have performed a detailed study of Abell 3558. Our analysis shows that its dynamical history is more complicated than previously thought. We have found some traits typical of cool core clusters (surface brightness peaked at the center, peaked metal abundance profile) and others that are more common in merging clusters, like deviations from spherical symmetry in the thermodynamic quantities of the ICM. This last result has been achieved with a new technique for deriving temperature maps from images. We have also detected a cold front and, with the combi…
Context: Measurements of intracluster gas temperatures out to large radii are important for the use of clusters for precision cosmology and for studies of cluster physics. Previous attempts to measure robust temperatures at cluster virial radii failed. Aims: The goal of this work is to measure the temperature profile of the very relaxed galaxy cluster Abell 2204 out to large radii, possibly reaching the virial radius. Methods: Taking advantage of its low particle background due to its low-Earth orbit, Suzaku data are used to measure the outer temperature profile of Abell 2204. These data are c…
We present here the results of a detailed study of the X-ray properties of the cluster of galaxies Abell 3128 (z=0.06), based on the analysis of deep (100 ks) XMM-Newton data. The most obvious feature of the X-ray morphology of A3128 is the presence of two X-ray peaks separated by ~12'. By detecting the redshifted Fe K line, we find that the Northeast (NE) X-ray peak observed toward A3128 is a distant luminous cluster of galaxies at redshift z=0.44. Our subsequent optical spectroscopic observation of a distant radio bright galaxy in the centre of the NE X-ray peak with the Magellan telescope a…
Wide-band Suzaku data on the merging cluster Abell 3667 were examined for hard X-ray emission in excess to the known thermal component. Suzaku detected X-ray signals in the wide energy band from 0.5 to 40 keV. The hard X-ray (> 10 keV) flux observed by the HXD around the cluster center cannot be explained by a simple extension of the thermal emission with average temperature of ~7 keV. The emission is most likely an emission from a very hot (kT > 13.2 keV) thermal component around the cluster center, produced via a strong heating process in the merger. In the north-west radio relic, no signatu…
During 2001 and 2002, observations of several X-ray bright clusters of galaxies were conducted using the ACBAR Bolometer Array on the South Pole Viper telescope. A multi-frequency analysis of these clusters is currently underway. This multi-frequency analysis includes 150, 220 and 275 GHz data from ACBAR, X-ray imaging and spectroscopy from Chandra and XMM-Newton, and weak lensing data from the CTIO 4m Blanco telescope. We describe here how ACBAR can be used to create fully sampled cluster images and present such images for four of the clusters in our sample; Abell 3266, Abell 3827, Abell S106…
We have searched for diffuse intracluster light in the galaxy cluster Abell 2667 (z=0.233) from HST images in three filters. We have applied to these images an iterative multi-scale wavelet analysis and reconstruction technique, which allows to subtract stars and galaxies from the original images. We detect a zone of diffuse emission south west of the cluster center (DS1), and a second faint object (ComDif), within DS1. Another diffuse source (DS2) may be detected, at lower confidence level, north east of the center. These sources of diffuse light contribute to 10-15% of the total visible ligh…
We present the results of a series of XMM-Newton EPIC and OM observations of Her X-1, spread over a wide range of the 35 d precession period. We confirm that the spin modulation of the neutron star is weak or absent in the low state - in marked contrast to the main or short-on states. The strong fluorescence emission line at ~6.4 keV is detected in all observations (apart from one taken in the middle of eclipse), with higher line energy, width and normalisation during the main-on state. In addition, we report the detection of a second line near 7 keV in 10 of the 15 observations taken during t…
The environmental properties of a sample of 31 hard X-ray selected AGN are investigated, from scales of 500 kpc down to 30 kpc, and are compared to a control sample of inactive galaxies. The AGN all lie in the redshift range 0.4<z<0.6. The accretion luminosity-density of the Universe peaks close to this redshift range, and the AGN in the sample have X-ray luminosities close to the knee in the hard X-ray luminosity function, making them representative of the population which dominated this important phase of energy conversion. Using both the spatial clustering amplitude and near neighbour count…
It has recently been proposed a theoretical model which accounts for the origin of radio mini-halos observed in some cooling flow clusters as related to electron re-acceleration by MHD turbulence (Gitti, Brunetti & Setti 2002). The MHD turbulence is assumed to be frozen into the flow of the thermal ICM and thus amplified in the cooling flow region. Here we present the application of this model to a new mini-halo candidate, the cluster A2626, and compare the results with those obtained for the mini-halo in the Perseus cluster. We present VLA data at 330 MHz and 1.5 GHz of the diffuse radio emis…
We present the results of a detailed analysis of the XMM-Newton observation of the galaxy cluster Abell 3921. The X-ray morphology of the cluster is elliptical, with the centroid offset from the brightest cluster galaxy by 17 arcsec, and with a pronounced extension toward the NW. Subtraction of a 2D beta model fit to the main cluster emission reveals a large scale, irregular residual structure in the direction of the extension, containing both diffuse emission from the intra cluster medium, and extended emission from the second and third-brightest cluster galaxies (BG2 and BG3). The greatest c…
We present results from deep Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the relaxed X-ray luminous galaxy cluster Abell 2204. We detect metallicity inhomogeneities in the intracluster medium on a variety of distance scales, from a ~12 kpc enhancement containing a few times 10^7 Msun of iron in the centre, to a region at 400 kpc radius with an excess of a few times 10^9 Msun. Subtracting an average surface brightness profile from the X-ray image yields two surface brightness depressions to the north and south of the cluster. Their morphology is similar to the cavities observed in cluster cores, but…
We present pulse-phase X-ray spectroscopy of the high-mass X-ray pulsar SMC X-1 from five different epochs, using Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS-S and XMM-Newton EPIC-pn data. The X-ray spectrum consistently shows two distinct components, a hard power law and a soft blackbody with kT_BB ~ 0.18 keV. For all five epochs the hard component shows a simple double-peaked pulse shape, and also a variation in the power law slope, which becomes harder at maximum flux and softer at minimum flux. For the soft component, the pulse profile changes between epochs, in both shape and phase relative to the pow…
We present spin-resolved X-ray data of the neutron star binary Her X-1 taken using the EPIC detectors on XMM-Newton. The data were taken at three distinct epochs through the 35 day precession period. The energy dependent light curves of this source vary significantly from epoch to epoch. It is known that the relative phasing of the soft (<1 keV) and hard (>2 keV) X-rays varies. Here, we find that the phase shift between the soft and hard bands during the main-on state is considerably different from that observed in the past. Further, it continues to change significantly during the other two ob…
We present the results of a new spectroscopic and photometric survey of the central region of the galaxy cluster A3921 (z=0.094). We detect the presence of two dominant clumps of galaxies: a main cluster centred on the BCG (A3921-A), and a NW sub-cluster (A3921-B) hosting the second brightest cluster galaxy. The distorted morphology of the two sub-clusters suggests that they are interacting, while the velocity distribution of 104 confirmed cluster members does not reveal strong signatures of merging. By applying a two-body dynamical formalism to the two sub-clusters of A3921, and by comparing …
We present an optical, X-ray, and radio analysis of the starburst in the Abell 1835 cluster's central cD galaxy. The dense gas surrounding the galaxy is radiating X-rays with a luminosity of ~1E45 erg/s consistent with a cooling rate of ~1000-2000 solar masses per year. However, Chandra and XMM-Newton observations find less than 200 solar masses per year of gas cooling below ~2 keV, a level that is consistent with the cD's current star formation rate of 100-180 solar masses per year. One or more heating agents (feedback) must then be replenishing the remaining radiative losses. The heat fluxes…
[abridged] We present an X-ray study of the low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) in NGC4258 using data from Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and the Swift/BAT survey. We find that signatures of X-ray reprocessing by cold gas are very weak in the spectrum of this Seyfert-2 galaxy; a weak, narrow fluorescent-Kalpha emission line of cold iron is robustly detected in both the Suzaku and XMM-Newton spectra but at a level much below that of most other Seyfert-2 galaxies. We conclude that the circumnuclear environment of this AGN is very "clean" and lacks the Compton-thick obscuring torus of unified Seyfe…
