We present XMM-Newton observations of the O supergiant Zeta Orionis (O9.7 Ib). The spectra are rich in emission lines over a wide range of ionization stages. The RGS-spectra show for the first time lines of low ion stages such as C VI, N VI, N VII, and O VII. The line profiles are symmetric and rather broad (FWHM approximately 1500 km/s) and show only a slight blue shift. With the XMM-epic spectrometer several high ions are detected in this star for the first time including Ar XVII and S XV. Simultaneous multi-temperature fits and DEM-modeling were applied to the RGS and EPIC spectra to obtain emission measures, elemental abundances and plasma temperatures. The calculations show temperatures in the range of about 0.07-0.6 keV. According to the derived models the intrinsic source X-ray luminosity at a distance of 251 pc Lx=1.37(.03) times 10^{32} ergs/s, in the energy range 0.3-10 keV. In the best multi-temperature model fit, the abundances of C, N, O, and Fe are near their solar values, while the abundances of Ne, Mg, and Si appear somewhat enhanced. The sensitivity of the He-like forbidden and intercombination lines to Zeta Ori's strong radiation field is used to derive the radial distances at which lines are formed. Values of 34 R-star for N VI, 12.5 R-star for O VII, 4.8 R-star for Ne IX, and 3.9 R-star for Mg XI are obtained.
XMM-Newton observations of the O supergiant zeta Orionis (O9.7 Ib) extend knowledge of its high-resolution spectrum beyond the CVI line at 33.7 Angstroms and suggest a new framework for the interpretation of the X-ray spectra of single hot stars. All the lines are broad and asymmetric with similar velocity profiles. X-rays probably originate in the wind's terminal velocity regime in collisionless shocks controlled by magnetic fields rather than in cooling shocks in the acceleration zone. During post-shock relaxation, exchange of energy between ions and electrons is so slow that electron heatin…
Aims: The objective of this study is to determine the general X-ray properties of the young stars in the external regions of the sigma Orionis cluster (tau ~ 3 Ma, d ~ 385 pc) and yield constraints on the X-ray emission of brown dwarfs. Methods: We carried out a careful analysis of public data taken in an unexplored region to the west of the centre of the cluster with the three EPIC cameras onboard the XMM-Newton mission. We looked for new X-ray young stars among the 41 identified X-ray sources in the area with maximum likelihood parameters L > 15 by cross-correlation with the USNO-B1, DENIS, …
FU Orionis stars (FUors) are young low-mass eruptive stars that are thought to be accreting at high rates. They could give rise to soft X-ray emission from accretion shocks, but their X-ray properties are largely unknown. We report the first X-ray detection of the prototype star FU Orionis with XMM-Newton. Its X-ray spectrum is unusual compared to those of classical T Tauri stars (cTTS). The cool and hot components typically detected in cTTS are present but are seen through different absorption column densities. A heavily-absorbed hot component at kT > 5 keV accounts for most of the observed f…
We present the results of an XMM-Newton observation of the young (~2-4 Myr) cluster around the hot star sigma Orionis. In a previous paper we presented the analysis of the RGS spectrum of the central hot star; here we discuss the results of the analysis of the full EPIC field. We have detected 175 X-ray sources, 88 of which have been identified with cluster members, including very low-mass stars down to the substellar limit. We detected eleven new possible candidate members from the 2MASS catalogue. We find that late-type stars have a median log L_X/L_bol ~ -3.3, i.e. very close to the saturat…
We present XMM-Newton observations of the young (~2-5 Myr) cluster around the hot (O9.5V) star sigma Orionis AB, aimed at obtaining a high resolution RGS spectrum of the hot star as well as EPIC imaging data for the whole field. We show that the RGS spectrum of sigma Ori AB may be contaminated by weaker nearby sources which required the development of a suitable procedure to extract a clean RGS spectrum and to determine the thermal structure and wind properties of the hot star. We also report on the detection of a flare from the B2Vp star sigma Ori E and we discuss whether the flare originated…
We combine UV spectra obtained with the HST/GHRS echelle, IMAPS, and Copernicus to study the abundances and physical conditions in the predominantly ionized gas seen at high (-105 to -65 km/s) and intermediate velocities (-60 to -10 km/s) toward zeta Ori. We have high resolution (FWHM ~ 3.3-4.5 km/s) and/or high S/N spectra for at least two significant ions of C, N, Al, Si, S, and Fe -- enabling accurate estimates for both the total N(H II) and the elemental depletions. C, N, and S have essentially solar relative abundances; Al, Si, and Fe appear to be depleted by about 0.8, 0.3-0.4, and 0.95 …
New X-ray observatories (Chandra and XMM-Newton) are providing a wealth of high-resolution X-ray spectra in which hydrogen- and helium-like ions are usually strong features. We present results from a new collisional-radiative plasma code, the Astrophysical Plasma Emission Code (APEC), which uses atomic data in the companion Astrophysical Plasma Emission Database (APED) to calculate spectral models for hot plasmas. APED contains the requisite atomic data such as collisional and radiative rates, recombination cross sections, dielectronic recombination rates, and satellite line wavelengths. We co…
The phase of Super-Soft-Source (SSS) emission of the sixth recorded outburst of the recurrent nova RS Oph was observed twice with Chandra and once with XMM-Newton. The observations were taken on days 39.7, 54.0, and 66.9 after outburst. We confirm a 35-sec period on day 54.0 and found that it originates from the SSS emission and not from the shock. We discus the bound-free absorption by neutral elements in the line of sight, resonance absorption lines plus self-absorbed emission line components, collisionally excited emission lines from the shock, He-like intersystem lines, and spectral change…
We examine the XMM X-ray spectrum of the LINER-AGN NGC 7213, which is best fit with a power law, K-alpha emission lines from Fe I, Fe XXV and Fe XXVI and a soft X-ray collisionally ionised thermal plasma with kT=0.18 +0.03/-0.01 keV. We find a luminosity of 7x10^(-4) L_Edd, and a lack of soft X-ray excess emission, suggesting a truncated accretion disc. NGC 7213 has intermediate X-ray spectral properties, between those of the weak AGN found in the LINER M81 and higher luminosity Seyfert galaxies. This supports the notion of a continuous sequence of X-ray properties from the Galactic Centre thr…
We present results from XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer observations of the prototypical starburst galaxy M82. These high resolution spectra represent the best X-ray spectra to date of a starburst galaxy. A complex array of lines from species over a wide range of temperatures is seen, the most prominent being due to Lyman-alpha emission from abundant low Z elements such as N, O, Ne, Mg and Si. Emission lines from Helium-like charge states of the same elements are also seen in emission, as are strong lines from the entire Fe-L series. Further, the OVII line complex is resolved and is…
X-ray spectroscopy of Seyfert 2 galaxies provides an excellent probe of the circumnuclear environment in active galactic nuclei. The grating experiments on both Chandra and XMM-Newton have now provided the first high resolution spectra of several of the brightest Seyfert 2's. We present Chandra HETG data on Markarian 3 and XMM-Newton RGS data on NGC 1068. In both cases, the spectra are dominated by emission lines due to radiative recombination following photoionization, photoexcitation, and fluorescence. There is no evidence for any significant contribution from collisionally-heated gas.
We investigate the spatial distribution of the physical and chemical properties of the hot X-ray emitting plasma of the supernova remnant IC 443, in order to get important constraints on its ionization stage, on the progenitor supernova explosion, on the age of the remnant, and its physical association with a close pulsar wind nebula. The hard X-ray thermal emission (1.4-5.0 keV) of IC 443 displays a centrally-peaked morphology, its brightness peaks being associated with hot (kT>1 keV) X-ray emitting plasma. A ring-shaped structure, characterized by high values of equivalent widths and median …
We report on an XMM-Newton observation of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy NGC 6240. The 0.3-10 keV spectrum can be successfully modelled with: (i) three collisionally ionized plasma components with temperatures of about 0.7, 1.4, and 5.5 keV; (ii) a highly absorbed direct power-law component; and (iii) a neutral Fe K_alpha and K_beta line. We detect a significant neutral column density gradient which is correlated with the temperature of the three plasma components. Combining the XMM-Newton spectral model with the high spatial resolution Chandra image we find that the temperatures and the co…
We present an analysis of the X-ray spectrum of the Local Bubble, obtained by simultaneously analyzing spectra from two XMM-Newton pointings on and off an absorbing filament in the Southern galactic hemisphere (b ~ -45 deg). We use the difference in the Galactic column density in these two directions to deduce the contributions of the unabsorbed foreground emission due to the Local Bubble, and the absorbed emission from the Galactic halo and the extragalactic background. We find the Local Bubble emission is consistent with emission from a plasma in collisional ionization equilibrium with a tem…
A complete overview of the supernova remnant (SNR) population is required to investigate their evolution and interaction with the surrounding interstellar medium in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Recent XMM-Newton observations of the SMC cover three known SNRs (DEM S5, SNR B0050-72.8, and SNR B0058-71.8), which are poorly studied and are X-ray faint. We used new multi-frequency radio-continuum surveys and new optical observations at Ha, [SII], and [OIII] wavelengths, in combination with the X-ray data, to investigate their properties and to search for new SNRs in the SMC. We used X-ray sour…
(Abridged) We present results of XMM-Newton observations of the RS CVn binary $σ^2$ Coronae Borealis. The RGS and EPIC MOS2 spectra were simultaneously fitted with collisional ionization equilibrium plasma models to determine coronal abundances of various elements. Contrary to the solar first ionization potential (FIP) effect in which elements with a low FIP are overabundant in the corona compared to the solar photosphere, and contrary to the ``inverse'' FIP effect observed in several active RS CVn binaries, coronal abundance ratios in $σ^2$ CrB show a complex pattern as supported by similar f…
We present a 23 ks XMM-Newton observation of the ULIRG Mrk 273. The hard X-ray spectrum can be modeled by a highly absorbed power law plus an Fe Kalpha emission line. The iron line is broad, suggesting possible superposition of a neutral iron line at 6.4 keV, and a blend of ionized iron lines from Fe XXV and Fe XXVI. Given the relatively short exposure, the three line components can not be singularly resolved with high statistical significance: the neutral component is detected at ~2.5sigma and the Fe XXV line at ~2sigma c.l., while for the Fe XXVI line we can only estimate an upper limit. The…
(abridged) We report on XMM-Newton observations of SN1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The large collecting area telescopes together with the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC) provide X-ray spectra with unprecedented statistical quality and make it possible to investigate the spectral evolution during the brightening observed since the discovery in X-rays. High resolution spectra from the Reflection Grating Spectrometers yield a complementary view and allow us to perform more detailed investigations of prominent emission lines. The X-ray spectra were modeled with two-temperature emissi…
We report results on a 40 ks XMM-Newton observation of the Type 2 quasar 3C 234. Optical spectropolarimetric data have demonstrated the presence of a hidden broad-line region in this powerful (M_V <~ -24.2 after reddening and starlight correction) narrow-line FRII radio galaxy. Our analysis is aimed at investigating the X-ray spectral properties of this peculiar source which have remained poorly known so far. We analyze the 0.5--10 keV spectroscopic data collected by the EPIC cameras in 2006. The X-ray spectrum of this radio-loud quasar is typical of a local Compton-thin Seyfert 2 galaxy. It e…
In the framework of the study of supernova remnants and their complex interaction with the interstellar medium, we report on an XMM-Newton EPIC observation of the Galactic supernova remnant W49B. We investigate the spatial distribution of the chemical and physical properties of the plasma, so as to get important constraints on the physical scenario, on the dynamics of the supernova explosion, and on the interaction of the supernova remnant with the ambient interstellar clouds. We present line images, equivalent width maps, and a spatially resolved spectral analysis of a set of homogeneous regi…
We report on observations of the X-ray pulsar IGR J16320-4751 (a.k.a. AX J1631.9-4752) performed simultaneously with INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton. We refine the source position and identify the most likely infrared counterpart. Our simultaneous coverage allows us to confirm the presence of X-ray pulsations at ~1300 s, that we detect above 20 keV with INTEGRAL for the first time. The pulse fraction is consistent with being constant with energy, which is compatible with a model of polar accretion by a pulsar. We study the spectral properties of IGR J16320-4751 during two major periods occurring durin…
We present He-like line ratios (resonance, intercombination and forbidden lines) for totally and partially photoionized media. For solar plasmas, these line ratios are already widely used for density and temperature diagnostics of coronal (collisional) plasmas. In the case of totally and partially photoionized plasmas, He-like line ratios allow for the determination of the ionization processes involved in the plasma (photoionization with or without an additional collisional ionization process), as well as the density and the electronic temperature. With the new generation of X-ray satellites, …
We present the analysis of the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM-Newton) European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) data of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 109 (G109.1-1.0). CTB 109 is associated with the anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 1E 2259+586 and has an unusual semi-circular morphology in both the X-ray and the radio, and an extended X-ray bright interior region known as the `Lobe'. The deep EPIC mosaic image of the remnant shows no emission towards the west where a giant molecular cloud complex is located. No morphological connection between the Lobe and the AXP is found. We find remarka…
We report on XMM-Newton spectroscopy of the low-luminosity active galaxies (LLAGN) M81 and NGC4579 both of which have known black hole masses and well-sampled spectral energy distributions (SED). The iron Kalpha line profiles from both the LLAGN can be described in terms of two components - a narrow line at 6.4 keV and a moderately broad line (FWHM = 20000 km/s) arising from highly ionized, He-like or H-like species (E \sim 6.8 keV). We interpret the broad lines arising from an accretion disk the inner edge of which is restricted to large radii (r_{in} \sim 100 r_g). However, the Eddington rat…
We reanalyze the XMM--Newton data of GRB 011211 showing that the spectral features, interpreted by Reeves et al. (2002, 2003) as due thermal emission from a collisionally ionized plasma, can be also reproduced by a reflection model (with ionization parameter $ξ\sim 10^2$). We discuss the implications of this interpretation, estimating the total mass required in the simplified case of a funnel geometry. We conclude that a moderate clumping of the reprocessing material (corresponding to a filling factor of the order of $f\sim 10^{-3}$) is required. Finally we show that, if this interpretation is…
Aims: Using XMM-Newton data, we have aimed to study the nuclear outflow of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 in X-rays with respect to its morphology and to spectral variations along the outflow. Methods: We analysed XMM-Newton RGS spectra, RGS brightness profiles in cross-dispersion direction, narrow band RGS and EPIC images and EPIC PN brightness profiles of the nuclear region and of the outflow of NGC 253. Results: We detect a diversity of emission lines along the outflow of NGC 253. This includes the He-like ions of Si, Mg, Ne and O and their corresponding ions in the next higher ionisat…
Radiative transfer in a clumped winds is used to describe X-ray emission line profiles observed in the XMM-Newton RGS spectrum of the OI star Zeta Puppis. It is shown that this X-ray spectrum can be explained as originating from a multi-temperature collisional plasma located in the wind acceleration zone. The X-rays are attenuated in the clumped stellar wind, which gives characteristic profiles to the emergent lines. We specifically study the N VII emission line in the spectrum of Zeta Pup. Long RGS exposures reveal that the N VII line profile is structured. On the basis of our Zeta Pup atmosp…
(Abridged abstract) We present an analysis of the X-ray emission of the rapidly rotating giant star YY Mensae observed by Chandra HETGS and XMM-Newton. Although no obvious flare was detected, the X-ray luminosity changed by a factor of two between the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations taken 4 months apart. The coronal abundances and the emission measure distribution have been derived from three different methods using optically thin collisional ionization equilibrium models. The abundances show an inverse first ionization potential (FIP) effect. We further find a high N abundance which we in…
We present the soft X-ray spectrum of the LINER galaxy M81 from a long observation with the XMM-Newton RGS. As well as continuum emission from the active nucleus, the spectrum shows emission lines from multi temperature collisionally ionized gas. The emission lines are significantly broader than the RGS point-source spectral resolution, and in the cross dispersion direction the emission lines are detected adjacent to, as well as coincident with, the active nucleus. This implies that they originate in a region of more than an arcminute (~ 1 kpc) spatial extent. A good fit to the whole RGS spect…
AIMS. We study the variability of the Fe 6.4 KeV emission line from the Class I young stellar object Elias 29 in the Rho-Oph cloud. METHODS. We analysed the data from Elias 29 collected by XMM during a nine-day, nearly continuous observation of the Rho-Oph star-forming region (the Deep Rho-Oph X-ray Observation, named Droxo). The data were subdivided into six homogeneous time intervals, and the six resulting spectra were individually analysed. RESULTS. We detect significant variability in the equivalent width of the Fe 6.4 keV emission line from Elias 29. The 6.4 keV line is absent during the …
We present the soft X-ray spectrum of the LINER galaxy M81 derived from a long observation with the XMM RGS. The spectrum is dominated by continuum emission from the active nucleus, but also contains emission lines from Fe L, and H-like and He-like N, O, and Ne. The emission lines are significantly broader than the RGS point-source spectral resolution; in the cross dispersion direction the emission lines are detected adjacent to, as well as coincident with, the active nucleus. This implies that they originate in a region of a few arc-minutes spatial extent (1 arc-minute ~ 1 kpc in M81). The fl…
Using the combined spectral and spatial resolving power of the Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETGS) on board Chandra, we obtain separate spectra from the bright central source of NGC 1068 (Primary region), and from a fainter bright spot 4" to the NE (Secondary region). Both spectra are dominated by line emission from H- and He-like ions of C through S, and from Fe L-shell ions, but also include narrow radiative recombination continua, indicating that most of the soft X-ray emission arises in low-temperature (kT few eV) photoionized plasma. We confirm the conclusions of Kinkhabwala et al. (2…
We present the X-ray grating spectra of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi during its 2006 outburst, obtained with the XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories. Two weeks after optical maximum, the X-ray spectrum was hard and dominated by emission lines of H-like and He-like ions. The X-ray luminosity was 2.4 x 10^36 erg s^-1 in the 0.33-10 keV range. The spectra indicate a collisionally dominated plasma with a broad range of temperatures. All the lines are blue-shifted, with the velocity shift increasing with lower ionization state and longer wavelength. Two weeks later, the spectrum was still domina…
