We have performed a detailed systematic search for multiperiodicity in the Population I Cepheids of the Large Magellanic Cloud. In this process we have identified for the first time several new types of Cepheid pulsational behaviour. We have found two triple-mode Cepheids pulsating simultaneously in the first three radial overtones. In 9% of the first overtone Cepheids we have detected weak, but well resolved secondary periodicities. They appear either very close to the primary pulsation frequency or at a much higher frequency with a characteristic period ratio of 0.60-0.64. In either case, the secondary periodicities must correspond to nonradial modes of oscillation. This result presents a major challenge to the theory of stellar pulsations, which predicts that such modes should not be exited in Cepheid variables. Nonradial modes have also been found in three of the fundamental/first overtone double-mode Cepheids, but no such oscillations have been detected in single mode Cepheids pulsating in the fundamental mode. In 19% of double-mode Cepheids pulsating in the first two radial overtones (FO/SO type) we have detected a Blazhko-type periodic modulation of amplitudes and phases. Both modes are modulated with a common period, which is always longer than 700 days. Variations of the two amplitudes are anticorrelated and maximum of one amplitude always coincides with minimum of the other. We have compared observations of modulated FO/SO Cepheids with predictions of theoretical models of the Blazhko effect, showing that currently most popular models cannot account for properties of these stars. We propose that Blazhko effect in FO/SO Cepheids can be explained by a nonstationary resonant interaction of one of the radial modes with another, perhaps nonradial, mode of oscillations.
Systematic search for multiperiodicity in the LMC Cepheids (Moskalik, Kolaczkowski & Mizerski 2004) has led to discovery of low amplitude nonradial modes in a substantial fraction of overtone pulsators. We present detailed discussion of this new type of multimode Cepheid pulsators and compare them to similar nonradial pulsators discovered among RR Lyrae stars. Finally, we show first detections of secondary nonradial modes in FU/FO double-mode Cepheids.
We present Fourier analysis at 490\,nm for 87 Cepheid light curves in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The photometry has be obtained through the EROS project whose main purpose is the search for baryonic dark matter in the Galactic halo. The very high quality of the photometry and the good phase coverage enable us to obtain accurate Fourier decomposition of the ligh curves. As a consequence we confirm that the so-called s-Cepheids are overtone pulsators and represent about 30 $\%$ of our sample, whereas the Classical Cepheids are fundamental pulsators. We have identified a number of fea…
We present a sample of 76 double-mode Cepheids detected in the 4.5 square degree area in the central part of the LMC. 19 stars from the sample pulsate in the fundamental mode and the first overtone while 57 objects are the first and second overtone pulsators. We analyze the period ratio of double-mode Cepheids and Fourier parameters of decomposition of the light curves of these objects. We also present location of different type Cepheids from the LMC in the color-magnitude diagram and show the distribution of their ${V-I}$ color indices.
We present Cepheids located in the close neighborhood of star clusters from the Magellanic Clouds. 204 and 132 such stars were found in the LMC and SMC, respectively. The lists of objects were constructed based on catalogs of Cepheids and star clusters, recently published by the OGLE-II collaboration. Location of selected Cepheids on the sky indicates that many of them are very likely cluster members. Photometric data of Cepheids and clusters are available from the OGLE archive.
We present a sample of 93 double-mode Cepheids detected in the 2.4 square degree area in the central part of the SMC. 23 stars from the sample pulsate in the fundamental mode and the first overtone while 70 objects are the first and second overtone pulsators. This is the largest sample of such type Cepheids detected in one environment so far. We analyze period ratio of double-mode Cepheids and Fourier parameters of decomposition of the light curves of these objects. We also present location of different type Cepheids from the SMC in the color-magnitude diagram and show their distribution of V-…
We present a sample of 13 candidates for single-mode second overtone Cepheids discovered in the 2.4 square degree area of the SMC bar during the OGLE microlensing search. All candidates passed four photometric tests: analysis of Fourier parameters of the light curve, R_21 and ϕ_21, position in the period-luminosity diagram and location in the color-magnitude diagram. The stars form a very homogeneous group of objects with very similar light curves of low amplitude and almost sinusoidal shape. Their color indices B-V and V-I are also very similar and the objects determine the observational blue…
We present the Catalog of Cepheids from the SMC which contains data for 2049 objects detected in the 2.4 square degree area of central parts of the SMC. For each object period, BVI photometry, astrometry, and R_21, ϕ_21 parameters of the Fourier decomposition of I-band light curve are provided. The Catalog is based on observations collected during the OGLE-II microlensing survey. Tests of completeness performed in overlapping parts of adjacent fields indicate that completeness of the Catalog is very high: about 92%. Statistics and distributions of basic parameters of Cepheids are also presente…
We have performed systematic frequency analysis of the LMC Cepheids observed by OGLE project. Several new types of pulsation behaviour are identified, including triple-mode and amplitude-modulated double-mode pulsations. In ~10% of the first overtone Cepheids we find low amplitude secondary periodicities corresponding to nonradial modes. This is the first evidence for excitation of nonradial oscillations in Classical Cepheid variables.
We present V(RI)sub data for thirteen Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud ans fifty-five in each wavelength band. The median uncertainty in the photometry iy Moffett, Gieren & Barnes (1998) which contained 1000 measures ($\pm 0.01$ mag) in each wavelength band on 22 variables with periods in the range 8--133 days.
We present the Catalog of Cepheids from the LMC. The Catalog contains 1333 objects detected in the 4.5 square degree area of central parts of the LMC. About 3.4*10^5 BVI measurements of these stars were collected during the OGLE-II microlensing survey. The Catalog data include period, BVI photometry, astrometry, and R_21, ϕ_21 parameters of the Fourier decomposition of I-band light curve. The vast majority of objects from the Catalog are the classical Cepheids pulsating in the fundamental or first overtone mode. The remaining objects include Population II Cepheids and red giants with pulsation…
Period-colour (PC) and amplitude-colour (AC) relations at maximum, mean and minimum light are constructed from a large grid of full amplitude hydrodynamic models of Cepheids with a composition appropriate for the SMC (Small Magellanic Cloud). We compare these theoretical relations with those from observations. The theoretical relations are in general good agreement with their observational counterparts though there exist some discrepancy for short period (log [P] < 1) Cepheids. We outline a physical mechanism which can, in principle, be one factor to explain the observed PC/AC relations for th…
We report the discovery of three new triple-mode classical Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud, two of them with the fundamental, first overtone and second overtone excited, and one pulsating simultaneously in the first three overtones. Thus, the number of triple-mode Cepheids in the LMC is increased to five. We also present two objects belonging probably to a new type of double-mode Cepheids having the first and third overtones excited. We measure the rates of period change in these stars and detect decrease of periods in two of them, what is in conflict with theoretical predictions.
Distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is determined using the Cepheid variables in the LMC. We combine the individual LMC Cepheid distances obtained from the infrared surface brightness method and a dataset with a large number of LMC Cepheids. Using the standard least squares method, the LMC distance modulus can be found from the ZP offsets of these two samples. We have adopted both a linear P-L relation and a ``broken'' P-L relation in our calculations. The resulting LMC distance moduli are 18.48+-0.03 mag and 18.49+-0.04 mag (random error only), respectively, which are consistent to t…
We investigate the influence of blending on the Cepheid distance scale. Blending leads to systematically low distances to galaxies observed with HST, and therefore to systematically high estimates of the Hubble constant H_0. We select a sample of 43 long-period, large-amplitude Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud, from the catalog recently released by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. We then model the effects of blending, as observed by HST at large distances, by adding the V,I-bands contributions from nearby bright stars. We find that the derived distance modulus would be too …
Two problems about the faintest Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) Cepheids are addressed. On one hand evolutionary tracks fail to cross the Cepheid Instability Strip for the highest magnitudes (i.e. I-mag~17) where Cepheids are observed; Mass-Luminosity relations (ML) obtained from evolutionary tracks disagree with Mass-Luminosity relations derived from observations. We find that the above failures concern models built with standard input physics as well as with non-standard ones. The present work suggests that towards highest magnitudes, Cepheids stars undergo a selection effect caused by evolutio…
The purpose of this preliminary work is to determine if Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids have stellar winds. If a Cepheid undergoes mass loss then at some distance from the star, a fraction of the gas becomes dust, which causes an infrared excess. Mass loss is tested using OGLE II optical observations and SAGE infrared observations for a sample of 488 Cepheids. The resultant mass-loss rates range from $10^{-12}$ to $10^{-7}$ $M_\odot/yr$. Using the mass--loss model we compute infrared stellar luminosities for the sample of Cepheids and compare predicted infrared PL relations with observed…
Using Spitzer archival data from the SAGE (Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution) program, we derive the Cepheid period-luminosity (P-L) relation at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 microns for Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids. These P-L relations can be used, for example, in future extragalactic distance scale studies carried out with the James Webb Space Telescope. We also derive Cepheid period-color (P-C) relations in these bands and find that the slopes of the P-C relations are relatively flat. We test the nonlinearity of these P-L relations with the F statistical test, and find that the …
Accurate CCD observations of three Cepheids in the SMC were made with the purpose of confirming their nature of second overtone mode Cepheids. The stars were suspected pulsating in the second overtone mode owing to the unusual light curve and short period reported by Payne-Gaposchkin & Gaposchkin (1966). The analysis of the new data shows that for two stars the previous periods are wrong, and in the three cases the new light curves are normal. According to the new observations, HV 1353 is a fundamental mode pulsator with small amplitude, and HV 1777 and HV 1779 are first overtone mode pulsator…
The pulsational properties of the Cepheid models along the evolutionary tracks from the Padova group (Girardi et al.), as calculated with our turbulent convective pulsation code, are in good agreement with the resonance constraints imposed by the observational OGLE-2 data of the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. Our study suggests that the P_4/P_1=1/2 resonance for the overtone Cepheids occurs for periods clustering around 4.2 d, in disagreement with the suggestion of Antonello & Poretti based on the observations of light curves, but in agreement with Kienzle et al. and Feuchtinger et al. For…
We investigate the theoretical scenario concerning the large sample of variables recently discovered in the dwarf, metal-poor irregular galaxy Leo A, focusing the attention on the "Anomalous" Cepheid phenomenon and its correlation with RR Lyrae stars, Classical and Population II Cepheids. To this purpose, we make use of suitable stellar and pulsation models to depict the pulsational history of evolutionary structures with metallicity Z=0.0004, finding that He-burning pulsators are expected only outside the mass interval ~ 0.8-1.7 Mo. The dependence on metal content of this scenario has been in…
The MACHO variables of LMC Field 77 that lie in the vicinity of the Cepheid instability strip are reexamined. Among the 144 variables that we identify as Cepheids we find 14 that have Fourier amplitudes <0.05 mag in the MACHO red band, of which 7 have an amplitude <0.006 mag : we dub the latter group of stars ultra-low amplitude (ULA) Cepheids. The variability of these objects is verified by a comparison of the MACHO red with the MACHO blue lightcurves and with those of the corresponding OGLE LMC stars. The occurrence of ULA Cepheids is in agreement with theory. We have also discovered 2 low a…
(ABRIDGED) We have applied the near-IR Barnes-Evans realization of the Baade-Wesselink method as calibrated by Fouque & Gieren (1997) to five metal-poor Cepheids with periods between 13 and 17 days in the Small Magellanic Cloud as well as to a sample of 34 Galactic Cepheids to determine the effect of metallicity on the period-luminosity (P-L) relation. For ten of the Galactic Cepheids we present new accurate and well sampled radial-velocity curves. The Baade-Wesselink analysis provides accurate individual distances and luminosities to the Cepheids in the two samples, allowing us to constrain d…
We have measured the elemental abundances of 68 Galactic and Magellanic Cepheids from FEROS and UVES high-resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra in order to establish the influence of the chemical composition on the properties of these stars (see Romaniello et al. 2005). Here we describe the robust analytical procedure we have developed to accurately determine them. The resulting iron abundances span a range between ~ -0.80 dex for stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud and ~ +0.20 dex for the most metal-rich ones in the Galaxy. While the average values for each galaxy are in good agreement …
We employ the very recent photometric data of the OGLE project together with stellar atmosphere and linear pulsation models to determine the distance modulus of the Small Magellanic Cloud from its double-mode Cepheids. Based on the requirement of obtaining the same distance modulus DM from the two types of variables (fundamental & first overtone and first & second overtone), we get DM=19.05 mag, with a very small statistical error (standard deviation) of 0.017 mag. Various systematic and zero point ambiguities (primarily those of the color - temperature transformation) lead to an error of +/-0…
We report the discovery of eleven beat Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud, using data obtained by the EROS microlensing survey. Four stars are beating in the fundamental and first overtone mode (F/1OT), seven are beating in the first and second overtone (1OT/2OT). The SMC F/1OT ratio is systematically higher than the LMC F/1OT, while the 1OT/2OT period ratio in the SMC Cepheids is the same as the LMC one.
We present high precision and well sampled BVRIJK light curves and radial velocity curves for a sample of five Cepheids in the SMC. In addition we present radial velocity curves for three Cepheids in the LMC. The low metallicity (Fe/H ~ -0.7) SMC stars have been selected for use in a Baade-Wesselink type analysis to constrain the metallicity effect on the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation. The stars have periods of around 15 days so they are similar to the Cepheids observed by the Extragalactic Distance Scale Key Project on the Hubble Space Telescope. We show that the stars are representative…
We present a differential study of 500 Magellanic Cepheids with 3 million measurements obtained as a by-product of the EROS microlensing survey. The data-set is unbiased and provides an excellent basis for a differential analysis between LMC and SMC. We investigate the pulsational properties of the Cepheids as a function of metallicity and the constraints they give to stellar pulsation, stellar evolution theory and opacities. Moreover, our empirical analysis shows a small metallicity effect on the period-luminosity relation which has a significant implication to recent distance estimates based…
In the second part of the OGLE-III Catalog of Variable Stars (OIII-CVS) we present 197 type II Cepheids and 83 anomalous Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The sample of type II Cepheids consists of 64 BL Her stars, 96 W Vir stars and 37 RV Tau stars. Anomalous Cepheids are divided into 62 fundamental-mode and 21 first-overtone pulsators. These are the largest samples of such types of variable stars detected anywhere outside the Galaxy. We present the period-luminosity and color-magnitude diagrams of stars in the sample. If the boundary period between BL Her and W Vir stars is adopt…
We present a catalog containing 290 LMC and 590 SMC Cepheids which have been obtained using the two 4k $\times$ 8k CCD cameras of the EROS~2 microlensing survey. The Cepheids were selected from 1,134,000 and 504,000 stars in the central regions of the LMC and SMC respectively, that were monitored over 150 nights between October 1996 and February 1997, at a rate of one measurement every night. For each Cepheid the light curves, period, magnitudes in the EROS~2 filter system, Fourier coefficients, J2000 coordinates and cross-identifications with objects referenced in the CDS Simbad database are …
It has been observed that Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds have lower masses for the same luminosity than those in the Milky Way. The model, from Neilson & Lester (2008), of pulsation-driven mass loss for Cepheids is applied to theoretical models of Cepheids with metallicity consistent with the Milky Way and Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The mass-loss model is analyzed using the metallicity correction of the Period-Luminosity relation to compare the ratio of mass loss of Cepheids with lower metallicity to that of Cepheids with solar metallicity. It is determined that mass loss may be lar…
A number of recent works have suggested that the period-luminosity (PL) relation for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids exhibits a controversial nonlinear feature with a break period at 10 days. Therefore, the aim of this Research Note is to test the linearity/nonlinearity of the PL relations for the LMC Cepheids in BVIcJHKs band, as well as in the Wesenheit functions. We show that simply comparing the long and short period slopes, together with their associate d standard deviations, leads to a strictly larger error rate than applying rigorous statistical tests such as the F-test. We ap…
We present an analysis of the period distribution of $\sim 1800$ Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud, based on data obtained by the MACHO microlensing experiment and on a previous catalogue by Payne-Gaposchkin. Using stellar evolution and pulsation models, we construct theoretical period-frequency distributions that are compared to the observations. These models reveal that a significant burst of star formation has occurred recently in the LMC ($\sim 1.15\times 10^8$ years). We also show that during the last $\sim 10^8$ years, the main center of star formation has been propagating from SE t…
In the past few years, the Magellanic Clouds have been the targets for several major variable star surveys. The results of these surveys are now becoming available and it is clear that a Renaissance in LMC and SMC variable star research will result. In this review, I will describe the results of such surveys and review the questions that are likely to be answered by further work. With respect to results, I will concentrate on LMC MACHO Project data, including beat Cepheids, discovery statistics, mode identification, Fourier decomposition of lightcurves, and the differences between the LMC and …
We present Period-Luminosity-Color and Period-Luminosity relations of classical Cepheids constructed for about 1280 Cepheids from the LMC and 2140 from the SMC. High quality BVI observations (120-360 epochs in the I-band and 15-40 in the BV-bands) were collected during the OGLE-II microlensing experiment. The I-band diagrams of the LMC show very small scatter, σ=0.074 mag, indicating that Cepheid variables can potentially be a very good standard candle. We compare relations of fundamental mode Cepheids from the LMC and SMC and we do not find significant differences of slopes of the Period-Lumi…
Recent search for multiperiodicity in LMC Cepheids (Moskalik, Kolaczkowski & Mizerski 2004) has led to discovery of periodic modulation of amplitudes and phases in many of the first/second overtone (FO/SO) double mode pulsators. We discuss observational characteristics and possible mechanisms responsible for this behaviour.
B and V photometry has been obtained for variable stars in the northeast arm of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Periods and lightcurves have been determined for 237 periodic variables, including 201 Cepheids, 68 of which are newly discovered. Fundamental mode Cepheids and first overtone mode Cepheids are generally well separated in the B,V color-magnitude diagram, with the latter having bluer mean colors than the former. The Cepheid period-color relationship for this outlying SMC field is indistinguishable from that seen in more centrally located SMC fields, and is bluer than theoretical pre…
We present the first part of a new catalog of variable stars (OIII-CVS) compiled from the data collected in the course of the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III). In this paper we describe the catalog of 3361 classical Cepheids detected in the ~40 square degrees area in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The sample consists of 1848 fundamental-mode (F), 1228 first-overtone (1O), 14 second-overtone (2O), 61 double-mode F/1O, 203 double-mode 1O/2O, 2 double-mode 1O/3O, and 5 triple-mode classical Cepheids. This sample is supplemented by the list of 23 ultra-low amplit…
We utilize nonlinear pulsation models to reproduce the observed light and color curves for two samples of bump Cepheid variables, 19 from the Large Magellanic Cloud and 9 from the Small Magellanic Cloud. This analysis determines the fundamental parameters mass, luminosity, effective temperature, metallicity, distance and reddening for the sample of stars. The use of light curve shape alone to determine metallicity is a new modelling technique introduced here. The metallicity, distance and reddening distributions for the two samples are in agreement with those of similar stellar populations in …
The OGLE data base is used in conjunction with Kurucz atmosphere models to generate sets of period, effective temperature and luminosity for fundamental and overtone Magellanic Cloud Cepheids. The Florida pulsation code (with linear turbulent convection) is then used to compute masses for these stars, assuming an average composition of ($X$=0.716, $Z$=0.010) for the LMC and of ($X$=0.726, $Z$=0.004) for the SMC. The average $M$--$L$ relation for the fundamental Cepheids matches closely that for the first overtone Cepheids for each Magellanic Cloud. Neither the SMC nor the LMC average $\Log M$-…
We have discovered 20 dwarf Cepheids (DC) in the Carina dSph galaxy from the analysis of individual CCD images obtained for a deep photometric study of the system. These short-period pulsating variable stars are by far the most distant (~100 kpc) and faintest (V ~ 23.0) DCs known. The Carina DCs obey a well-defined period-luminosity relation, allowing us to readily distinguish between overtone and fundamental pulsators in nearly every case. Unlike RR Lyr stars, the pulsation mode turns out to be uncorrelated with light-curve shape, nor do the overtone pulsators tend towards shorter periods com…
Period-colour (PC) and amplitude-colour (AC) relations are studied for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids under the theoretical framework of the hydrogen ionization front (HIF) - photosphere interaction. LMC models are constructed with pulsation codes that include turbulent convection, and the properties of these models are studied at maximum, mean and minimum light. As with Galactic models, at maximum light the photosphere is located next to the HIF for the LMC models. However very different behavior is found at minimum light. The long period (P>10days) LMC models imply that the photos…
We present the results of non-linear pulsation modelling of 20 bump Cepheids in the LMC. By obtaining a optimal fit to the observed V,R MACHO lightcurves we have placed tight constraints on stellar parameters of M, L, Teff and well as quantities of distance modulus and reddening. We describe the mass-luminosity relation for core-He burning for intermediate mass stars. The mass-luminosity relation depends critically on the level of mixing within the stellar interior over the course of the main-sequence lifetime. Our sample is significantly more luminous than predicted by classical stellar evolu…
We present a detailed comparison between predicted and empirical PL_{I,K} relations and Wesenheit function for Galactic and Magellanic Clouds (MCs) First Overtone (FO) Cepheids. We find that zero-points predicted by Galactic Cepheid models based on a noncanonical (mild overshooting) Mass-Luminosity (ML) relation are in very good agreement with empirical zero-points based on HIPPARCOS parallaxes, while those based on canonical (no overshooting) ML relation are about 0.2-0.3 mag brighter. We also find that predicted and empirical PL_K relation and Wesenheit function give, according to optical (V…
Within the current uncertainties in the treatment of the coupling between pulsation and convection, limiting amplitude, nonlinear, convective models appear the only viable approach for providing theoretical predictions about the intrinsic properties of radial pulsators. In this paper we present the results of a comprehensive set of Cepheid models computed within such theoretical framework for selected assumptions on their original chemical composition.
Systematic survey for multiperiodicity in the LMC Cepheids (Moskalik, Kolaczkowski & Mizerski 2004, 2006) has led to discovery of several new forms of pulsational behaviour. One of them is periodic amplitude and phase modulation observed in many first/second overtone (FO/SO) double mode Cepheids. In the current paper we present detailed discussion of this newly discovered phenomenon, based on a combined OGLE+MACHO sample of double mode pulsators.
It has been claimed that Period-Luminosity relations derived from infrared observations of Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids are less dependent on the metallicity of the Cepheids. In this work, infrared observations of LMC Cepheids from the SAGE survey are combined with OGLE II optical observation to model and predict mass-loss rates. The mass-loss rates are fit to the data and are predicted to range from about 10^{-12} to 10^{-7}M_\odot/yr; however, the rates depend on the assumed value of the dust-to-gas ratio. By comparing the relations derived from observations to the relations derived…
For many years modeling of double-mode pulsation of classical pulsators was a challenging problem. Inclusion of turbulent convection into pulsation hydrocodes finally led to stable double-mode models. However, it was never analysed, which factor of turbulent convection is crucial. We show that the double-mode behaviour displayed in the computed models results from incorrect assumptions adopted in some of the pulsation hydrocodes, namely from the neglect of buoyant forces in convectively stable layers. This leads to significant turbulent energies and consequently to strong eddy-viscous damping …
We perform a detailed analysis of Cepheids in NGC 4258, Magellanic Clouds and Milky Way in order to verify the reliability of the theoretical scenario based on a large set of nonlinear convective pulsation models. We derive Wesenheit functions from the synthetic BVI magnitudes of the pulsators and we show that the sign and the extent of the metallicity effect on the predicted Period-Wesenheit (P-W) relations change according to the adopted passbands. These P-W relations are applied to measured BVI magnitudes of NGC 4258, Magellanic and Galactic Cepheids available in the literature. We find tha…
Based on a search of the literature up to May 2001, the number of known variable stars in Galactic globular clusters is approximately 3000. Of these, more than 2200 have known periods and the majority (approximately 1800) are of the RR Lyrae type. In addition to the RR Lyrae population, there are approximately 100 eclipsing binaries, 120 SX Phe variables, 60 Cepheids (including population II Cepheids, anomalous Cepheids and RV Tauri) and 120 SR/red variables. The mean period of the fundamental mode RR Lyrae variables is 0.585, for the overtone variables it is 0.342 (0.349 for the first-overton…
The discovery of a large number of beat Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud in the MACHO survey, provides an opportunity to compare the characteristics of such Cepheids over a range of metallicities. We produced a large grid of linear nonadiabatic pulsation models using the OPAL opacity tables and with compositions corresponding to those of the Milky Way, and the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Using the relationship between the period ratio and the main pulsation period, we are able to define a range of models which correspond to the observed beat Cepheids, and thereby constrain the phy…
We interpret the three periods detected in OGLE LMC Cepheids SC3-360128 and SC5-338399 as corresponding to the first three overtones of radial pulsations. This interpretation imposes stringent constraints on parameters of the stars and on their evolutionary status, which could only be the first crossing of the instability strip. Evolutionary models reproducing measured periods exist only in a restricted range of metallicities (Z=0.004-0.007). The models impose an upper limit on the extent of overshooting from the convective core. Absolute magnitude of each star is confined to a narrow interval…
In this paper, we discuss and examine various issues concerning the recent findings that suggested the observed period-luminosity (P-L) relation for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids is nonlinear. These include (1) visualizing the nonlinear P-L relation; (2) long period Cepheids and sample selection; (3) outlier removal; (4) issues of extinction; (5) nonlinearity of the period-color (P-C) relation; (6) nonlinear P-L relations in different pass-bands; and (7) universality of the P-L relation. Our results imply that a statistical test is needed to detect the nonlinear PL relation. We the…
(abridged) Recent studies, using OGLE data for LMC Cepheids in the optical, strongly suggest that the period-luminosity (PL) relation for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids shows a break or non-linearity at a period of 10 days. In this paper we apply statistical tests, the chi-square test and the F-test, to the Cepheid data from the MACHO project to test for a non-linearity of the V- and R-band PL relations at 10 days, and extend these tests to the near infrared (JHK-band) PL relations with 2MASS data. We correct the extinction for these data by applying an extinction map towards the LM…
We present CCD phase-binned light curves at 490 nm for 97 Cepheid variable stars in the bar of the LMC. The photometry was obtained as part of the French EROS project and has excellent phase coverage, permitting accurate decomposition into Fourier components. We identify as `sinusoidal' or s-Cepheids those stars with periods less than 5.5 d and small second-harmonic components. These stars comprise $\sim$30% of our sample and most form a sequence $\sim$1 mag brighter than the LMC classical Cepheids in the period-luminosity diagram. They are also generally bluer and have lower-amplitude light c…
We report on the discovery of the second case of a galactic Cepheid, ASAS112843-5925.7=HD 304373, pulsating in the the first (1O) and second (2O) radial overtones. The ratio between the periods (0.8058), the short value of the 1O period (0.922405 d) and the shape of the 1O light curve makes HD 304373 very similar to the 1O/2O Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds. The implications of a so close similarity between a galactic 1O/2O pulsator and LMC ones are discussed in terms of importance of the metallicity effects.
The Cepheid period-luminosity (PL) relation is unquestionably one of the most powerful tools at our disposal for determining the extragalactic distance scale. While significant progress has been made in the past few years towards its understanding and characterization both on the observational and theoretical sides, the debate on the influence that chemical composition may have on the PL relation is still unsettled. With the aim to assess the influence of the stellar iron content on the PL relation in the V and K bands, we have related the V-band and the K-band residuals from the standard PL r…
There is strong evidence that the period-luminosity (PL) relation for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids shows a break at a period around 10 days. Since the LMC PL relation is extensively used in distance scale studies, the non-linearity of the LMC PL relation may affect the results based on this LMC calibrated relation. In this paper we show that this problem can be remedied by using the Wesenheit function in obtaining Cepheid distances. This is because the Wesenheit function is linear although recent data suggests that the PL and the period-colour (PC) relations that make up the Wesen…
In this paper, we will review major new results regarding classical Cepheids, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Specifically, we discuss recent work regarding multimode Cepheids and describe new observations of a W Vir star (HV 5756) and a Cepheid which are each in eclipsing binary systems. An additional interesting pulsating supergiant in an eclipsing system is also identified. Ephemerides for eclipses for the three systems are provided.
We have applied the infrared surface brightness (ISB) technique to derive distances to 13 Cepheids in the LMC which span a period range from 3 to 42 days. From the absolute magnitudes of the variables calculated from these distances, we find that the LMC Cepheids define tight period-luminosity relations in the V, I, W, J and K bands which agree exceedingly well with the corresponding Galactic PL relations derived from the same technique, and are significantly steeper than the LMC PL relations in these bands observed by the OGLE-II Project in V, I and W, and by Persson et al. in J and K. We fin…
