Based upon flavor SU(3) symmetry, we perform global fits to charmless
B decays into one pseudoscalar meson and one vector meson in the final states. We consider different symmetry breaking schemes and find that the one implied by na{ï}ve factorization is slightly favored over the exact symmetry case. The $(\barρ,\barη)$ vertex of the unitarity triangle (UT) constrained by our fits is consistent with other methods within errors. We have found large color-suppressed, electroweak penguin and singlet penguin amplitudes when the spectator quark ends up in the final-state vector meson. Nontrivial relative strong phases are also required to explain the data. The best-fit parameters are used to compute branching ratio and CP asymmetry observables in all of the decay modes, particularly those in the $B_s$ decays to be measured at the Tevatron and LHC experiments.
Simple experimental tests are proposed which can clarify the origin for the anomalously high $η'$ appearance in charmless strange final states in $B$ decays and can investigate the the nature of SU(3) symmetry-breaking in weak heavy flavor decays.
Two types of predictions for charmless B decays are compared. One involves estimates based on factorization and models for form factors, while the other involves the use of flavor SU(3), sometimes with assumptions about the smallness of certain amplitudes. After a comparison of some factorization predictions with recent data, specific decays of $B$ mesons to two charmless mesons are discussed.
We perform a global fits to charmless $B \to PP$ decays which independently constrain the $(\barρ,\barη)$ vertex of the unitarity triangle. The fitted amplitudes and phase are used to predict the branching ratios and CP asymmetries of all decay modes, including those of the $B_s$ system. Different schemes of SU(3) breaking in decay amplitude sizes are analyzed. The possibility of having a new physics contribution to $K π$ decays is also discussed.
We first present a model-independent analysis using flavor SU(3) symmetry with SU(3) breaking effects in $B$ decays to two charmless vector mesons ($VV$) in the final state. In order to bridge the flavor SU(3) symmetry approach and the factorization approach in $B \to VV$ decays, we explicitly show how to translate each SU(3) amplitude into a corresponding amplitude in factorization. Various decay modes, including $B \to K^* ϕ$ which is so far the only $B \to VV$ mode having some experimental evidence, are discussed in both the SU(3) symmetry and factorization approaches. Within the generalize…
We derive several relations between CP violating rate differences $Δ(B\to PV) = Γ(B\to PV) - Γ(\bar B \to \bar P \bar V)$ for charmless $B\to P V$ decays in the Standard Model using SU(3) flavor symmetry. It is found that although the relations between branching ratios of $ΔS = 0$ and $ΔS = -1$ processes are complicated, there are simple relations independent of hadronic models between some of the $ΔS =0$ and $ΔS = -1$ rate differences due to the unitarity property of the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, such as $ Δ(B\to π^+ ρ^-) = -Δ(B\to π^+ K^{*-})$, $Δ(B\to π^- ρ^+) = - Δ(K^- ρ^+)$. SU(3) breakin…
The decays of $B$ mesons to a pair of charmless pseudoscalar ($P$) mesons are analyzed within a framework of flavor SU(3). Symmetry breaking is taken into account in tree ($T$) amplitudes through ratios of decay constants; exact SU(3) is assumed elsewhere. Acceptable fits to $B \to ππ$ and $B \to K π$ branching ratios and CP asymmetries are obtained with tree, color-suppressed ($C$), penguin ($P$), and electroweak penguin ($P_{EW}$) amplitudes. Crucial additional terms for describing processes involving $η$ and $η'$ include a large flavor-singlet penguin amplitude ($S$) as proposed earlier and…
The decays of $B$ mesons to a charmless vector ($V$) and pseudoscalar ($P$) meson are analyzed within a framework of flavor SU(3) in which symmetry breaking is taken into account through ratios of decay constants in tree ($T$) amplitudes. The magnitudes and relative phases of tree and penguin amplitudes are extracted from data; the symmetry assumption is tested; and predictions are made for rates and CP asymmetries in as-yet-unseen decay modes. A key assumption for which we perform some tests and suggest others is a relation between penguin amplitudes in which the spectator quark is incorporat…
We calculate the enhancements to the inclusive charmless decays of b quark, $b \to s g, s q\bar{q}, sgg$, from gluon penguin diagrams induced by the charged and neutral Higgs bosons $(H^{\pm}, h^0, H^0$, and A^0) in the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model with flavor-changing couplings. Within the considered parameter space, the new contributions from charged Higgs boson are dominant. After including the new contributions, the branching ratio $BR(b \to sg)$ (q^2 =0) can be increased form $\sim 0.2%$ in the standard model to 4.4% and 2.6% in the two-Higgs-doublet model for $m_{H^+}=100$ and 200 GeV, respec…
We study two-body charmless hadronic decays of $B$ mesons to a pseudoscalar meson ($P$) and a tensor meson ($T$) in the frameworks of both flavor SU(3) symmetry and generalized factorization. Certain ways to test validity of the generalized factorization are proposed, based on the flavor SU(3) analysis. We present a set of relations between a flavor SU(3) amplitude and a corresponding amplitude in the generalized factorization which bridge both approaches in $B \to PT$ decays. The branching ratios and CP asymmetries are calculated using the \emph{full} effective Hamiltonian including all the \…
Several baryons containing a heavy b-quark have been discovered. The decays of these states provide new platform for testing the standard model (SM). We study $CP$ violation in SM for charmless two-body decays of the flavor $SU(3)$ anti-triplet beauty baryon (b-baryon) ${\cal B} = (Ξ^-_b,\;Ξ^0_b,\;Λ_b^0)$ in a model independent way. We found, in the flavor $SU(3)$ symmetry limit, a set of new predictive relations among the branching ratio $Br$ and $CP$ asymmetry $A_{CP}$ for $\cal B$ decays, such as $A_{CP}(Ξ_b^-\to K^0 Ξ^-)/A_{CP}(Ξ_b^-\to \bar K^0 Σ^-) = - Br(Ξ_b^- \to \bar K^0 Σ^-)/Br(Ξ_b^-…
New results going beyond those obtained from isospin and flavor symmetry and subject to clear experimental tests are obtained for effects of FSI in $B^\pm$ decays to final states containing neutral flavor-mixed mesons like $ω$, $ϕ$, $η$ and $η'$. The most general strong-interaction diagrams containing arbitrary numbers of quarks and gluons are included with the assumptions that any $q \bar q$ pair created by gluons must be a flavor singlet, and that there are no hairpin diagrams in which a final meson contains a $q \bar q$ pair from the same gluon vertex. The smallness of $K^- η$ suggests that…
We analyze charmless two-body non-leptonic $B$ decays under the framework of factorization assisted topological amplitude approach. Unlike the conventional flavor diagram approach, we consider flavor $SU(3)$ breaking effect assisted by factorization hypothesis for topological diagram amplitudes of different decay modes, by factorizing out the corresponding decay constants and form factors. The non-perturbative parameters of topology diagram magnitudes $χ$ and strong phase $ϕ$ are universal that can be extracted by $χ^2$ fit from current abundant experimental data of charmless $B$ decays. The n…
We analyze charmless two-body non-leptonic B decays $B \to PP, PV$ under the framework of factorization assisted topological amplitude approach, where $P(V)$ denotes a light pseudoscalar (vector) meson. Compared with the conventional flavor diagram approach, we consider flavor $SU(3)$ breaking effect assisted by factorization hypothesis for topological diagram amplitudes of different decay modes, factorizing out the corresponding decay constants and form factors. The non-perturbative parameters of topology diagram magnitudes $χ$ and strong phase $ϕ$ are universal that can be extracted by $χ^2$…
Flavor SU(3) analysis of heavy meson ($B$ and $D$) hadronic charmless decays can be formulated in two different ways. One is to construct the SU(3) irreducible representation amplitude (IRA) by decomposing effective Hamiltonian according to the SU(3) transformation properties. The other is to use the topological diagrams (TDA). These two methods should give equivalent physical results in the SU(3) limit. Using $B \to PP$ decays as an example, we point out that previous analyses in the literature using these two methods do not match consistently in several ways, in particular a few SU(3) indepe…
Global fits to charmless B --> PP decays in the framework of flavor SU(3) symmetry are updated and improved without reference to the \sin2βmeasured from the charmonium decay modes. Fit results directly constrain the (\barρ,\barη) vertex of the unitarity triangle, and are used to predict the branching ratios and CP asymmetries of all decay modes, including those of the B_s system. Different schemes of SU(3) breaking in decay amplitude sizes are analyzed. The major breaking effect between strangeness-conserving and strangeness-changing decays can be accounted for by including a ratio of decay co…
We prove a general theorem about equal CP rate differences within pairs of U-spin related charmless $B$ and $B_s$ decays. Large deviations from equalities would be evidence for new physics. Six pairs of decays into two pseudoscalar mesons are identified where such relations hold. Ratios of corresponding rate differences and certain ratios of rates measure U-spin breaking. These processes provide useful information on the weak phase $γ={\rm Arg} V^*_{ub}$. Applications of U-spin symmetry to other decays are discussed.
The CLEO Collaboration has now observed the decays $B^+ \to ωπ^+$ and $B \to ωK^+$ with branching ratios of $(1.1^{+0.6}_{-0.5} \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-5}$ and $(1.5^{+0.7}_{-0.6} \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-5}$, respectively. These are the first reported decays to charmless final states involving a vector (V) and a pseudoscalar (P) meson. The implications of these decays for others of B mesons to charmless VP final states are explored. In a model-independent approach, using only flavor SU(3) symmetry, several tests are proposed for an anticipated hierarchy among different contributions to decay amplitu…
The decays of $B$ mesons to a pair of charmless pseudoscalar mesons ($PP$ decays) or to a vector and pseudoscalar meson ($VP$ decays) have been analyzed within the framework of flavor SU(3) symmetry and the Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism of CP violation. Separate $PP$ and $VP$ fits proved to be successful in describing the experimental data (branching ratios, CP asymmetries and time-dependent parameters). Decay magnitudes and relative weak and strong phases have been extracted from the fits. Values of the weak phase $γ$ were found to be consistent with the current indirect bounds from other analy…
Charmless hadronic decays of B mesons to a vector meson (V) and a tensor meson (T) are analyzed in the frameworks of both flavor SU(3) symmetry and generalized factorization. We also make comments on B decays to two tensor mesons in the final states. Certain ways to test validity of the generalized factorization are proposed, using $B \to VT$ decays. We calculate the branching ratios and CP asymmetries using the full effective Hamiltonian including all the penguin operators and the form factors obtained in the non-relativistic quark model of Isgur, Scora, Grinstein and Wise.
Several baryons containing a heavy b-quark, the b-baryons, have been discovered. The charmless two-body decays of b-baryons can provide a new platform for CP violating studies in a similar way as charmless two-body decays of B-meson. In b-baryon decays there are new CP violating observable related to baryon polarization. We show that in the flavor $SU(3)$ limit there exist relations involve different combinations of the decay amplitudes compared with those in CP violating rate asymmetry. These new relations therefore provide interesting tests for the mechanism of CP in the standard model (SM) …
New data from the BaBar, Belle, and CLEO Collaborations on B decays to two-body charmless final states are analyzed, with the following consequences: (1) The penguin amplitude which dominates the decay $B^+ \to π^+ K^{*0}$ has a magnitude similar to that dominating $B^+ \to π^+ K^0$. (2) The decay $B^+ \to π^+ η$, a good candidate for observing direct CP violation, should be detectable at present levels of sensitivity. (3) The decays $B^+ \to η' K^+$ and $B^+ \to ηK^{*+}$ are sufficiently similar in rate to the corresponding decays $B^0 \to η' K^0$ and $B^0 \to ηK^{*0}$, respectively, that one…
QCD sum rules are used to estimate the flavour SU(3)-symmetry violation in two-body B decays to pions and kaons. In the factorizable amplitudes the SU(3)-violation manifests itself in the ratio of the decay constants f_K/f_pi and in the differences between the B->K, B_s->K and B->pi form factors. These effects are calculated from the QCD two-point and light-cone sum rules, respectively, in terms of the strange quark mass and the ratio of the strange and nonstrange quark-condensate densities. Importantly, QCD sum rules predict that SU(3) breaking in the heavy-to-light form factors can be substa…
We discuss the correlations of charming penguin contributions to $B\toππ$, $πK$ and KK using approximate flavor SU(3) symmetry. Strong constraints are found from the direct CP asymmetries especially in $πK$ modes. We make a global fit to the latest data and find that only a small charming penguin is allowed, and the size of color-suppressed tree amplitude (C) relative to tree amplitudes (T) remains large $C/T\simeq0.6$, which disfavors the possibility of a large charming penguin as an explanation for the $ππ$ puzzle. We show that a small charming penguin can still have sizable effect in the ti…
More precise extractions on the two important CKM matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ are presented up to $1/m_Q^2$ corrections based on the complete heavy quark effective field theory (HQEFT) of QCD. The HQEFT as a large component QCD provides us a complete theoretical framework for correctly and systematically evaluating the subleading and higher order contributions in $1/m_Q$ expansion of heavy quarks. A global analysis on charmless B decays is made based on the isospin and SU(3) flavor symmetry. An isospin relation is found to be very useful for studying SU(3) symmetry breaking effec…
The decays of $B$ mesons to charmless final states consisting of a vector meson ($V$) and a pseudoscalar meson ($P$) are analyzed within flavor SU(3). Predictions are compared with new data from the CLEO Collaboration. Dominant contributions to amplitudes and subdominant interfering terms are identified. Evidence is found for a specific penguin amplitude (contributing, for example, to $B^+ \to ρ^+ K^0$) at a level much higher than that implied by most explicit models. The validity of the conclusion $\cos γ< 0$, obtained through other analyses of $B \to VP$ decays, is examined here from a less …
There are many charmless B decay pairs whose amplitudes are related by U spin (d <--> s) or flavor SU(3). The theoretical uncertainty in any analysis involving such pairs must take into account U-spin/SU(3) breaking. In the past, such considerations generally used theoretical input, but we show that this can be experimentally measured. We present lists of two- and three-body decay pairs from which the size of the breaking can be obtained. We detail the values of U-spin/SU(3) breaking given by the present experimental data. One pair -- Bd -> pi+ pi- and Bd -> pi- K+ -- exhibits large nonfactori…
Isospin and flavor SU(3) relations in charmless hadronic B decays $B\to ππ, πK$ are investigated in detail with paying attention to the SU(3) symmetry breaking effects in both amplitudes and strong phases. In general, the isospin and the flavor SU(3) structure of the effective Hamiltonian provide several relations among the amplitudes and strong phases. Whereas a global fit to the latest data shows that some relation seems not to be favorable for a consistent explanation to the current data within the standard model (SM). By considering several patterns of SU(3) breaking, the amplitudes and th…
Charmless B decay modes $B \to ππ, πK$ and $KK$ aresystematically investigated with and without flavor SU(3) symmetry. Independent analyses on $ππ$ and $πK$ modes both favor a large ratio between color-suppressed tree ($C$) and tree ($T)$ diagram, which suggests that they are more likely to originate from long distance effects. The sizes of QCD penguin diagrams extracted individually from $ππ$, $πK$ and $KK$ modes are found to follow a pattern of SU(3) breaking in agreement with the naive factorization estimates. Global fits to these modes are done under various scenarios of SU(3)relations. Th…
We provide a systematic study of charmless $B_s \to PP, PV, VV$ decays ($P$ and $V$ denote pseudoscalar and vector mesons, respectively) based on an approximate six-quark operator effective Hamiltonian from QCD. The calculation of the relevant hard-scattering kernels is carried out, the resulting transition form factors are consistent with the results of QCD sum rule calculations. By taking into account important classes of power corrections involving "chirally-enhanced" terms and the vertex corrections as well as weak annihilation contributions with non-trivial strong phase, we present predic…
Strangeness-changing decays of $B$ mesons to three-body final states of pions and kaons are studied, assuming that they are dominated by a $ΔI=0$ penguin amplitude with flavor structure $\bar b \to \bar s$. Numerous isospin relations for $B\to Kππ$ and for underlying quasi-two-body decays are compared successfully with experiment, in some cases resolving ambiguities in fitting resonance parameters. The only exception is a somewhat small branching ratio noted in $B^0\to K^{*0}π^0$, interpreted in terms of destructive interference between a penguin amplitude and an enhanced electroweak penguin c…
Within the factorization-assisted topological-amplitude approach, we studied the 33 charmless $B_{(s)} \to VV$ decays, where $V$ stands for a light vector meson. According to the flavor flows, the amplitude of each process can be decomposed into 8 different topologies. In contrast to the conventional flavor diagrammatic approach, we further factorize each topological amplitude into decay constant, form factors and unknown universal parameters. By $χ^2$ fitting 46 experimental observables, we extracted 10 theoretical parameters with $χ^2$ per degree of freedom around 2. Using the fitted paramet…
We study the charmless decays $B\to K_hη$ and $B\to K_hη'$ within the framework of QCD factorization (QCDF) for $K_h= K,K^*,K_0^*(1430)$ and naive factorization for $K_h=K_2^*(1430)$. There are three distinct types of penguin contributions: (i) $b\to sq\bar q\to sη_{q}$, (ii) $b\to ss\bar s\to sη_s$, and (iii) $b\to s q\bar q\to q \bar K_h$, where $η_q=(u\bar u+d\bar d)/\sqrt{2}$ and $η_s=s\bar s$. $B\to K^{(*)}η^{(')}$ decays are dominated by type-II and type-III penguin contributions. The interference, constructive for $Kη'$ and $K^*η$ and destructive for $Kη$ and $K^*η'$, between type-II an…
Analyses of heavy mesons and baryons hadronic charmless decays using the flavor SU(3) symemtry can be formulated in two different forms. One is to construct the SU(3) irreducible representation amplitude (IRA) by decomposing effective Hamiltonian, and the other is to draw the topological diagrams (TDA). In the flavor SU(3) limit, we study various $B/D\to PP,VP,VV$, $B_c\to DP/DV$ decays, and two-body nonleptonic decays of beauty/charm baryons, and demonstrate that when all terms are included these two ways of analyzing the decay amplitudes are completely equivalent. Furthermore we clarify some…
Under the framework of soft-collinear effective theory, we analyze the charmless $B\to VV$ decays in a global way at leading power in $1/m_b$ and leading order in $α_s$ with $V$ denoting a light vector meson. In the flavor SU(3) symmetry, decay amplitudes for the 28 decay modes are expressed in terms of 8 nonperturbative parameters. With 35 experimental results, we fit these 8 nonperturbative parameters. Annihilation contributions are neglected due to power suppression in the $m_b\to \infty$ limit, so we include in the fit the nonperturbative charm penguins, which will play an important role i…
We study charmless pure annihilation type radiative B decays within the QCD factorization approach. After adding the vertex corrections to the naive factorization approach, we find that the branching ratios of $\bar{B}^0_d\toϕγ$, $\bar{B}^0_s\toρ^0γ$ and $\bar{B}^0_s\toωγ$ within the standard model are at the order of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-12})$, $\mathcal{O}(10^{-10})$ and $\mathcal{O}(10^{-11})$, respectively. The smallness of these decays in the standard model makes them sensitive probes of flavor physics beyond the standard model. To explore their physics potential, we have estimated the contr…
We analyze the charmless two-body $B\to VP$ decays in the soft-collinear-effective-theory (SCET), where $V(P)$ denotes a light vector (pseudoscalar) meson. Using the current experimental data, we find two solutions in $χ^2$ fit for the 16 non-perturbative inputs responsible for the 87 $B\to PP$ and $B\to VP$ decay channels in SU(3) symmetry. Chirally enhanced penguins can only change several charming penguins sizably, since they share the same topology. The (S-P)(S+P) annihilation penguins in the perturbative QCD approach have the same topology with charming penguins in SCET, which play an imp…
Utilizing all the experimental measured charmless $B \to PP$, $PV$ decay modes, where $P(V)$ denotes a light pseudoscalar (vector) meson, we extract the CKM angle $γ$ by global fit. All the unknown hadronic parameters are fitted with $γ$ together from experimental data, so as to make the approach least model dependent. The different contributions for various decay modes are classified by topological weak Feynman diagram amplitudes, which are to be determined by the global fit. To improve the precision of this approach, we consider flavor SU(3) breaking effects of topological diagram amplitudes…
Some new methods for the extraction of CKM phases $α$ and $γ$ using flavor SU(3) symmetry have been suggested through the construction of rigid polygons in the complex plane with sides equal to the decay amplitudes of B mesons into two mesons belonging to the light (charmless) pseudoscalar octet. These rigid polygons incorporate all the possible amplitude triangles and, being overdetermined, also serve as consistency checks and in estimating the rates of some decay modes. The same techniques also lead to numerous useful amplitude triangles when octet-singlet mixing has been taken into account …
We consider charmless weak decays of beauty-baryons into decuplet baryons and pseudoscalar mesons in a general framework based on $SU(3)$-flavor decomposition of the decay amplitudes. The dynamical assumption independent $SU(3)$ analysis accounts for the effects of an arbitrarily broken $SU(3)$ symmetry in these decays. An alternative approach in terms of quark diagrams is also provided and compared with the $SU(3)$ decomposition in the limit of exact $SU(3)$-flavor symmetry. Furthermore, the symmetries of the effective Hamiltonian is used to relate or neglect reduced $SU(3)$ amplitudes to der…
Recently Ciuchini, Pierini and Silvestrini proposed a method for constraining CKM parameters in B->K pi pi and B_s-> K pi pi through phase measurements of amplitudes involving I=3/2 K*pi final states. We show that complementary information on CKM parameters may be obtained by studying the phases of Delta I=1 B->(K*pi)_{I=1/2}, B_s->(K*\bar K)_{I=1} and B_s->(\bar K* K)_{I=1} amplitudes. Hadronic uncertainties in these constraints from electroweak penguin operators O_9 and O_10, studied using flavor SU(3), are shown to be very small in B->K pi pi and B_s->K pi pi and somewhat larger in B_s-> K\…
In charmless B -> PPP decays, where P is a pseudoscalar meson, there are six possibilities for the symmetry of the final state. In this paper, for P=pi,K, we examine the properties of the fully-symmetric final state. We present expressions for all 32 B -> PPP decay amplitudes as a function of both SU(3) reduced matrix elements and diagrams, demonstrating the equivalence of diagrams and SU(3). We also give 25 relations among the amplitudes in the SU(3) limit, as well as those that appear when the diagrams E/A/PA are neglected. In the SU(3) limit, one has the equalities \sqrt{2} A(B+ -> K+ pi+ p…
Implications of a 2 - 5.5 GeV sbottom and 12 - 16 GeV gluino masses for rare B decay phenomenology are discussed. An effective Hamiltonian is constructed in which the gluinos are integrated out and a \tilde{b} squark remains among the light flavor degrees of freedom. Restrictive constraints come from $b \to s γand b \to sg, but they allow a substantially enhanced inclusive b decay rate into charmless hadronic final states, and {\cal O}(10%) direct CP asymmetries in $B \to X_s γand B^\pm \to K^0 π^\pm decays, which are an order of magnitude larger than in the Standard Model. New contributions t…
The question of whether the anomalously large $B \to Kη' $ and $B \to Kη' X $ (inclusive) branching ratios are consistent with the standard model or a sign of new physics is still open and in the experimental court. The nature of the extra hadron $X$ in $B \to Kη' X $ is completely unknown. Directions for investigation and analysis of inclusive data are suggested as well as for comparable inclusive data on $B \to KηX $. New data confirming the prediction $BR(K^\pm ρ^o) = BR(K^\pm ω)$ support flavor-topology $B \to VP$ sum rules based on the OZI rule and emphasize the sharp contrast with the fa…
Using flavor SU(3) symmetry, we perform a model-independent analysis of charmless $\bar B_{u,d} (\bar B_s) \to PP, ~PV$ decays. All the relevant topological diagrams, including the presumably subleading diagrams, such as the QCD- and EW-penguin exchange diagrams and flavor-singlet weak annihilation ones, are introduced. Indeed, the QCD-penguin exchange diagram turns out to be important in understanding the data for penguin-dominated decay modes. In this work we make efforts to bridge the (model-independent but less quantitative) topological diagram or flavor SU(3) approach and the (quantitativ…
Branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries of charmless $\bar B_s\to PP, VP, VV$ decays (P and V denoting pseudoscalar and vector mesons, respectively) are re-examined in the framework of QCD factorization (QCDF). We take into account subleading power corrections to the penguin annihilation topology and to color-suppressed tree amplitudes that are crucial for resolving the CP puzzles and rate deficit problems with penguin-dominated two-body decays and color-suppressed tree-dominated $π^0π^0$ and $ρ^0π^0$ modes in the $B_{u,d}$ sector. Many of the $B_s\to h_1h_2$ decays can be related to …
We discuss implications of recent experimental data for B decays into two pseudoscalar mesons, with emphasis on those with $η$ and $η'$ in the final states. Applying a U-spin argument, we show that tree and penguin amplitudes, both in $B^+ \to π^+ η$ and in $B^+ \to π^+ η'$, are of comparable magnitudes. Nontrivial relative weak and strong phases between the tree-level amplitudes and penguin-loop amplitudes in the $B^{\pm} \to π^{\pm} η$ modes are extracted. We predict possible values for the averaged branching ratio and CP asymmetry of the $B^{\pm} \to π^{\pm} η'$ modes. We test the assumptio…
The QCD factorization (QCDF) method usually contains infrared divergences which introduce large model dependence to its predictions on charmless B decays. The amplitudes of charmless B decays can be decomposed into "tree" and "penguin" parts which are conventionally defined, not from the topology of the dominant diagrams, but through their associated CKM factors V_{ub}^* V_{uq} and V_{tb}^* V_{tq}, respectively, with q=d,s. We find that for B_{d,s} \to π^+ K^- decays, the "tree" amplitude can be well estimated in QCDF with small errors, as the endpoint singularities have been canceled to a lar…
Latest data on charmless strange vector-pseudoscalar $B^+$ decays now including $B^+\to ρ^+ K^o$ confirm a simple penguin model in which the gluon $G$ in an initial $\bar s u G$ state fragments equally into $u \bar u$, $d \bar d$ and $s \bar s$ and all form factors are equal. A search for possible additional contributions shows only a few signals not obscured by experimental errors whose implications are discussed. The experimental value of $0.25 \pm 0.11$ for the ratio of the branching ratios $BR(B^+ \to K^{*+}η)$ to $BR(B^+\to K^{*+}η')$ confirms the parity selection rule prediction 0.32. La…
In our previous paper we applied U-spin symmetry to charmless hadronic B+- --> M0 M+- decays for the purpose of precise extraction of the unitarity angle gamma. In this paper we extend our approach to neutral B0 and Bs --> M1 M2 decays. A very important feature of this method is that no assumptions regarding relative sizes of topological decay amplitudes need to be made. As a result, this method avoids an uncontrollable theoretical uncertainty that is often related to the neglect of some topological diagrams (e.g., exchange and annihilation graphs) in quark-diagrammatic approaches. In charged …
U-spin multiplet approach is applied to the full set of charmless hadronic B+/- --> M0 M+/- decays for the purpose of precise extraction of the unitarity angle gamma. Each of the four data sets, P0 P+/-, P0 V+/-, V0 P+/- and V0 V+/-, with P = pseudoscalar and V = vector, can be used to yield a precise value of gamma. The crucial advantage of this method over the common SU(3) symmetry based quark-diagrammatic approach is that no assumptions regarding relative sizes of topological decay amplitudes need to be made. As a result, this method avoids an uncontrollable theoretical uncertainty that is …
The long awaited baryonic $B$ decay $\bar B{}^0\to p\bar p$ was recently observed by LHCb with a branching fraction of order $10^{-8}$. All the earlier model predictions are too large compared with experiment. In this work, we point out that for a given tree operator $O_i$, the contribution from its Fiertz transformed operator, an effect often missed in the literature, tends to cancel the internal $W$-emission amplitude induced from $O_i$. The wave function of low-lying baryons are symmetric in momenta and the quark flavor with the same chirality, but antisymmetric in color indices. Using thes…
We review recent results on hadronic B meson decays including rare as well as non-suppressed decays. The main emphasis is on those channels relevant to measurement of CP violation in the coming B factories. After briefly describing flavor-tagged charm counting, we cover B -> DK(*), B -> charmless 2-body decays, inclusive eta' production, and final-state-interaction phases in B -> Psi K* and B -> D* rho.
We study the charmless two-body decays of $B\to {\bf B}_n \overline{\bf B}_n^\prime$ with $B = ( B^+ , B^0 , B^0_s)$ and ${\bf B}_n^{(\prime)}$ the low-lying octet baryons. The factorizable amplitudes are calculated by the modified bag model, while the nonfactorizable ones are extracted from the experimental data with the $SU(3)_F$ flavor symmetry. We are able to explain all current experimental measurements and provide predictions on the decay branching ratios in $B\to {\bf B}_n \overline{\bf B}_n^\prime$. Particularly, we find that ${\cal B}(B_s^0 \to Ξ^0 \overlineΞ^0) = (19.3\pm 2.7 )\times…
Consistent SU(6) and SU(8) spin-flavor extensions of the SU(3) flavor Weinberg-Tomozawa (WT) meson-baryon chiral Lagrangian are constructed, which incorporate vector meson degrees of freedom. In the charmless sector, the on-shell approximation to the Bethe-Salpeter (BS) approach successfully reproduces previous SU(3) WT results for the lowest-lying s--wave negative parity baryon resonances. It also provides some information on the dynamics of heavier ones and of the lightest d-wave negative parity resonances, as e.g. the Lambda(1520). For charmed baryons the scheme is consistent with heavy qua…
Based on the latest experimental data of $B \to ππ$ and $πK$ modes, a model-independent analytical analysis is presented. The CP-averaged branching ratio difference $ΔR = R_c - R_n$ in $B\to πK$ decays with $R_c = 2Br(π^0K^-)/Br(π^-\bar{K}^0)$ and $R_n =Br(π^+K^-)/2Br(π^0\bar{K}^0)$ is reduced though it remains larger than the prediction from the standard model(SM) as both measured $R_n$ and $R_c$ are enhanced, which indicates that a room for new physics becomes smaller. The present data of $ππ$ decay reduce the ratio $|C/T|$ from the previous value of $|C/T|\simeq 0.8 $ to $|C/T| \simeq 0.65$…
