We present a study of single-diffractive $W$-boson production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV, $pp \to Xp$ with $X$ including a $W$ boson, with the CMS detector. We discuss the feasibility of observing this process with an integrated effective luminosity for single interactions of 100 pb$^{-1}$.
We present recent results on Minimum Bias, MPI and DPS, Diffractive and Exclusive studies using data collected during Run 1 of the LHC. The measurements include data collected in pp collisions at $\sqrt s = 7$, and $8$ TeV by the CMS Collaboration. Double parton scattering is investigated in several final states including vector bosons and jets, and the effective cross section results are compared to other experiments and to MPI models tuned to recent underlying event measurements at CMS. Inclusive diffractive cross sections are discussed and compared to models, while searches and measurements…
Recent CMS results on diffraction are presented. These include the measurements of the soft diffractive cross sections, of the forward rapidity gap cross section, of the diffractive dijet cross section, the measurement of a large rapidity gap in W and Z boson events and the measurement of the pseudorapidity distribution of charged particles in a single diffractive enhanced sample. This last measurement is the first common result of the CMS and TOTEM collaborations. Some prospects of common CMS-TOTEM data taking are also discussed.
A study of forward energy flow in leptonically decaying W bosons using data of an integrated luminosity corresponding to 36 pb-1 of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. This data was recorded with the CMS detector during the 2010 running of the LHC. In this sample of W events, about 300 events with no significant energy deposits in one of the forward calorimeters are observed. This corresponds to a large pseudorapidity gap of at least 1.9 units. The majority of the charged leptons from these W decays are found in the hemisphere opposite to the gap. This gives a stron…
A clear evidence of inclusive diffraction observed by the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in minimum bias events at $\sqrt{s}=$0.9 TeV, 2.36 TeV is presented. The observed diffractive signal is dominated by inclusive single-diffractive dissociation and can be identified by the presence of a Large Rapidity Gap that extends over the forward region of the CMS detector. A comparison of the data with Monte Carlo predictions provided by PYTHIA6 and PHOJET generators is given. In addition, first observation of the single-diffractive production of di-jets at $\sqrt{s}=$7 TeV is presented.
With excellent performance the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment has made a number of key observations in the diffractive and exclusive processes and hence in probing the Standard model in a unique way. This presentation will cover recent results on the measurement of diffractive and exclusive processes using data recorded by CMS detector at the LHC.
In these proceedings we present CMS results on hard diffraction. Diffractive dijet production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV is discussed. The cross section for dijet production is presented as a function of $\tildeξ$, representing the fractional momentum loss of the scattered proton in single-diffractive events. The observation of W and Z boson production in events with a large pseudo-rapidity gap is also presented.
We describe recent results from CMS and TOTEM on hard diffraction, diffractive jets and jet gap jet events. We also give the first sensitivities and limits on quartic anomalous couplings and axion-like particles at high mass using the LHC as a $γγ$ collider. The predicted sensitivities with 300 fb$^{-1}$ are better by two or three orders of magnitude compared to the more standard methods at the LHC without measuring intact protons after collision
At the LHC, diffractive physics will be explored by the dedicated experiment TOTEM whose Technical Design Report has been approved in Summer 2004. The experimental programme will be carried out partly in TOTEM standalone mode for purely forward phenomena like elastic scattering, and partly in collaboration with CMS for processes requiring a full rapidity coverage. ATLAS and ALICE are interested in diffraction for a later stage. This article presents the TOTEM/CMS running scenario for diffractive physics in the first year of LHC. We discuss which processes are within reach and with which statis…
The forward physics program of the CMS experiment at the LHC spans a broad range of diverse physics topics including studies of low-x QCD and diffractive scattering, multi-parton interactions and underlying event structure, gamma-mediated processes and luminosity determination, Monte Carlo tuning and even MSSM Higgs discovery in central exclusive production. In this article, the forward detector instrumentation around the CMS interaction point is described and the prospects for diffractive and forward physics using the CMS forward detectors are summarized. In addition, first observation of for…
Measurements are presented of the single-diffractive dijet cross section and the diffractive cross section as a function of the proton fractional momentum loss $ξ$ and the four-momentum transfer squared $t$. Both processes pp$\to$pX and pp$\to$Xp, ie with the proton scattering to either side of the interaction point, are measured, where X includes at least two jets; the results of the two processes are averaged. The analyses are based on data collected simultaneously with the CMS and TOTEM detectors at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 8 TeV during a dedicated run with $β^{\as…
Exclusive and diffractive physics measurements are important for the better understanding of the non-perturbative regime of QCD. Two recent results of the CMS experiment is presented in this paper. The total and differential cross sections of central exclusive $π^+π^-$ production are measured at 5.02 and 13 TeV in the $p_{\mathrm{T}}(π) > 0.2~$GeV/$c$ and $|η(π)| < 2.4$ kinematic region. The invariant mass distribution is fitted by the sum of a continuum and four interfering relativistic Breit-Wigner functions. In the second part of the paper the measurement of the single diffractive dijets is…
We present measurements of soft single- and double-diffractive cross sections, as well as of forward rapidity gap cross sections at 7 TeV at the LHC, and compare the results to other measurements and to theoretical predictions implemented in various Monte Carlo simulations.
Feasibility studies of an observation of the exclusive diffractive bremsstrahlung in proton-proton scattering at the LHC are reported. A simplified approach to the photon and the scattered proton energy reconstruction is used. The background influence is discussed.
The differential cross section measurement for dijet production at proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV is presented as a function of an approximation for the fractional momentum loss of the scattered proton ($\tildeξ$), an useful observable to distinguish model predictions of diffractive and nondiffractive components. The data was collected by the CMS detector at low instantaneous luminosity runs at LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2.7 {\rm nb}^{-1}$. This is the first observation of single diffractive dijets at LHC.
Feasibility studies of an observation of the exclusive diffractive bremsstrahlung at RHIC at $\sqrt{s} = 200$~GeV and at $\sqrt{s} = 500$~GeV are reported. A simplified approach to the photon and the scattered proton energy reconstruction is used. Influence of possible backgrounds is discussed.
The cross section for dijet production in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented as a function of xi, a variable that approximates the fractional momentum loss of the scattered proton in single-diffractive events. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of 2.7 inverse nanobarns collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at low instantaneous luminosities, and uses events with jet transverse momentum of at least 20 GeV. The dijet cross section results are compared to the predictions of diffractive and nondiffractive models. The low-xi data show a significant contribution from di…
The observation of inclusive diffraction with the CMS detector at the LHC is presented for centre-of-mass energies \sqrt s = 0.9 TeV and 2.36 TeV. Diffractive events are selected by the presence of a Large Rapidity Gap in the forward region of the CMS detector and uncorrected data are compared with Monte Carlo simulations based on the event generators PYTHIA and PHOJET. The measurement of the forward energy flow, in the pseudorapidity region 3.15 < |η| < 4.9, is also presented at \sqrt s = 0.9 TeV, 2.36 TeV and 7 TeV. Uncorrected data are compared with Monte Carlo simulations based on PYTHIA.
Measurements of hadron production in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9, 2.36 and 7 TeV recorded with the CMS detector are reported. Transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and multiplicity distributions of charged hadrons are presented. For non-single-diffractive collisions, the average charged-hadron transverse momentum and pseudorapidity density reveal an increase in production rate not well matched by theory and models. Measured spectra of identified strange particles, K0S, Lambda, anti-Lambda, Xi- and Xi+, reconstructed based on their decay topology, are also presented. The production rates for s…
We report on the recent CMS measurements of soft hadron-hadron production, including the measurements of inclusive single- and double-diffractive cross sections, as well as the measurement of pseudorapidity distributions, and of the leading charged particle and leading jet cross sections. We present the cross sections for low-pT forward jets production, and production of dijets with large rapidity separation (central-forward, and forward-backward jets). Studies of double parton scattering using four-jet and W+2-jet events, and the cross sections for Drell-Yan with associated jet production are…
The adequacy of the triple-Pomeron interaction approximation (the 3P-model) for description of the high-energy single diffractive dissociation of nucleons is analyzed via application to the available experimental data on nucleon-nucleon scattering, including the recent results produced by CMS Collaboration which allow to estimate reliably the triple-Pomeron coupling value. It is argued that the total contribution of secondary Reggeon exchanges is not negligible up to the Tevatron energy.
Pseudorapidity (eta) distributions of charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV are measured in the ranges abs(eta) < 2.2 and 5.3 < abs(eta) < 6.4 covered by the CMS and TOTEM detectors, respectively. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 45 inverse microbarns. Measurements are presented for three event categories. The most inclusive category is sensitive to 91-96% of the total inelastic proton-proton cross section. The other two categories are disjoint subsets of the inclusive sample that are either enhanced or depleted in single d…
A study of forward energy flow and central charged-particle multiplicity in events with W and Z bosons decaying into leptons is presented. The analysis uses a sample of 7 TeV pp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The observed forward energy depositions, their correlations, and the central charged-particle multiplicities are not well described by the available non-diffractive soft-hadron production models. A study of about 300 events with no significant energy deposited in one of the forward calorimeters, cor…
We discuss the single diffractive production of $c \bar c$ pairs and charmed mesons at the LHC. For a first time we propose a $k_t$-factorization approach to the diffractive processes. The transverse momentum dependent diffractive parton distributions are obtained from standard (collinear) diffractive parton distributions used in the literature. In this calculation the transverse momentum of the pomeron is neglected with respect to transverse momentum of partons entering the hard process. We also perform the first evaluation of the cross sections at the LHC using the diffractive transverse mom…
We discuss a CMS eXtension for Studying Energetic Neutrinos (CMS-XSEN). Neutrinos at the LHC are abundant and have unique features: their energies reach out to the TeV range, and the contribution of the τ flavour is sizeable. The measurement of their interaction cross sections has much physics potential. The pseudorapity range 4<|η|<5 is of particular interest since leptonic W decays provide an additional contribution to the neutrino flux from b and c production. A modest detector of 4.1x$10^{27}$ nucleons/cm$^{2}$, placed in the LHC tunnel, 25 m from the interaction point, around the focusing…
At the Tevatron, the total p_bar-p cross-section has been measured by CDF at 546 GeV and 1.8 TeV, and by E710/E811 at 1.8 TeV. The two results at 1.8 TeV disagree by 2.6 standard deviations, introducing big uncertainties into extrapolations to higher energies. At the LHC, the TOTEM collaboration is preparing to resolve the ambiguity by measuring the total p-p cross-section with a precision of about 1 %. Like at the Tevatron experiments, the luminosity-independent method based on the Optical Theorem will be used. The Tevatron experiments have also performed a vast range of studies about soft an…
Feasibility studies of the measurement of the exclusive diffractive bremsstrahlung cross-section in proton-proton scattering at the centre of mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC are reported. Present studies were performed for the low luminosity LHC running with the betatron function value of 90~m using the ATLAS associated forward detectors ALFA and ZDC. A simplified approach to the event simulation and reconstruction is used. The background influence is also discussed.
In this paper we estimate the production of dimuons ($μ^+ μ^-$) in exclusive photon -- photon ($γγ$) and diffractive Pomeron - Pomeron $(I\!P I\!P)$, Pomeron - Reggeon $(I\!P I\!R)$ and Reggeon - Reggeon $(I\!R I\!R)$ interactions in $pp$ collisions at the LHC energy. The invariant mass, rapidity and tranverse momentum distributions are calculated using the Forward Physics Monte Carlo (FPMC), which allows to obtain realistic predictions for the dimuon production with two leading intact hadrons. In particular, predictions taking into account the CMS and LHCb acceptances are presented. Moreover,…
We present two analyses dedicated to measure the ratio of branching ratios of the top quark, R=B(t->Wb)/(t->Wq) (where q=d,s,b), using ttbar events with either one or two prompt isolated leptons (e or mu) in the final state. Furthermore the framework of the dileptonic analysis was used also for a feasibility study of the measurement of b-tagging efficiency, by assuming the R value to be the Standard Model one. Data-driven techniques to control the background in the selected events are discussed and the expected simulation results are presented.
Charged-particle production was studied in proton-proton collisions collected at the LHC with the ALICE detector at centre-of-mass energies 0.9 TeV and 2.36 TeV in the pseudorapidity range |$η$| < 1.4. In the central region (|$η$| < 0.5), at 0.9 TeV, we measure charged-particle pseudorapidity density dNch/deta = 3.02 $\pm$ 0.01 (stat.) $^{+0.08}_{-0.05}$ (syst.) for inelastic interactions, and dNch/deta = 3.58 $\pm$ 0.01 (stat.) $^{+0.12}_{-0.12}$ (syst.) for non-single-diffractive interactions. At 2.36 TeV, we find dNch/deta = 3.77 $\pm$ 0.01 (stat.) $^{+0.25}_{-0.12}$ (syst.) for inelastic, …
The Standard Model violates parity, but only by mechanisms which are invisible to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments (on account of the lack of initial state polarisation or spin-sensitivity in the detectors). Nonetheless, new physical processes could potentially violate parity in ways which are detectable by those same experiments. If those sources of new physics occur only at LHC energies, they are untested by direct searches. We probe the feasibility of such measurements using approximately 0.2 inverse femtobarns of data which was recorded in 2012 by the CMS collaboration and made publ…
We investigate the prospects for Central Exclusive Diffractive (CED) production of MSSM Higgs bosons at the LHC using forward proton detectors (FPD) proposed to be installed 220 m and 420 m from ATLAS and CMS detectors. We summarize the situation after the first and very successful data taking period of the LHC. The discovery of a Higgs boson and results from searches for additional MSSM Higgs bosons from the ATLAS and CMS, have recently led to a proposal of new low-energy MSSM benchmark scenarios. The CED signal cross section for the process H -> bb and its backgrounds are estimated in these …
We consider central exclusive diffractive dipion production in the reactions $pp \to pp π^{+} π^{-}$ and $p\bar{p} \to p\bar{p} π^{+} π^{-}$ at high energies. We include the dipion continuum, the dominant scalar $f_{0}(500)$, $f_{0}(980)$, and tensor $f_{2}(1270)$ resonances decaying into the $π^{+} π^{-}$ pairs. The calculation is based on a tensor pomeron model and the amplitudes for the processes are formulated in terms of vertices respecting the standard crossing and charge-conjugation relations of Quantum Field Theory. The formulae for the dipion continuum and tensor meson production are …
We present a study of the exclusive $pp \to pp K^{+} K^{-} K^{+} K^{-}$ reaction at high energies. We consider diffractive mechanisms with the intermediate $ϕϕ$ state with its decay into the $K^{+} K^{-} K^{+} K^{-}$ system. We include the $ϕ(1020)$ $\hat{t}/\hat{u}$-channel exchanges and the $f_{2}(2340)$ $s$-channel exchange mechanism. This $f_{2}$ state is a candidate for a tensor glueball. We discuss the possibility to use the $pp \to pp ϕϕ$ process in identifying the odderon exchange. An upper limit for the $\mathbb{P} \mathbb{O} ϕ$ coupling is extracted from the WA102 experimental data. …
Measurements of primary charged hadron multiplicity distributions are presented for non-single-diffractive events in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) = 0.9, 2.36, and 7 TeV, in five pseudorapidity ranges from |eta|<0.5 to |eta|<2.4. The data were collected with the minimum-bias trigger of the CMS experiment during the LHC commissioning runs in 2009 and the 7 TeV run in 2010. The multiplicity distribution at sqrt(s) = 0.9 TeV is in agreement with previous measurements. At higher energies the increase of the mean multiplicity with sqrt(s) is underestimated by most e…

Charged-hadron transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity distributions in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV are measured with the inner tracking system of the CMS detector at the LHC. The charged-hadron yield is obtained by counting the number of reconstructed hits, hit-pairs, and fully reconstructed charged-particle tracks. The combination of the three methods gives a charged-particle multiplicity per unit of pseudorapidity, dN(charged)/d(eta), for |eta| < 0.5, of 5.78 +/- 0.01 (stat) +/- 0.23 (syst) for non-single-diffractive events, higher than predicted by commonly used models. The …
The origin of the apparent thermalization in high-energy collisions is investigated using the data of the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations at the LHC. For this purpose, we analyze the transverse momentum distributions in the following proton-proton collision processes, all at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV: i) inclusive inelastic $pp$ collisions; ii) single- and double-diffractive Drell-Yan production $pp \to μ^+ μ^- X$; and iii) Higgs boson production. We confirm the relation between the effective temperature and the hard scattering scale observed at lower energies, and find that it extends even to the Higg…
A measurement of the inelastic proton-proton cross section with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV is presented. The analysis is based on events with energy deposits in the forward calorimeters, which cover pseudorapidities of -6.6 $< η<$ -3.0 and +3.0 $< η<$ +5.2. An inelastic cross section of 68.6 $\pm$ 0.5 (syst) $\pm$ 1.6 (lumi) mb is obtained for events with $M_\mathrm{X} >$ 4.1 GeV and/or $M_\mathrm{Y} >$ 13 GeV, where $M_\mathrm{X}$ and $M_\mathrm{Y}$ are the masses of the diffractive dissociation systems at negative and positive pseudorapidities, respect…
Measurements of inclusive charged-hadron transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity distributions are presented for proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9 and 2.36 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector during the LHC commissioning in December 2009. For non-single-diffractive interactions, the average charged-hadron transverse momentum is measured to be 0.46 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 0.9 TeV and 0.50 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 2.36 TeV, for pseudorapidities between -2.4 and +2.4. At these energies, the measured pseudorapidity densities in the central…
A measurement is presented of the exclusive and semi-exclusive production of charged pion pairs in proton-proton collisions, pp to p(p*) + $π^+π^-$ + p(p*) here the $π^+π^-$ pair is emitted at central rapidities, and the scattered protons stay intact (p) or diffractively dissociate (p*) without detection. The measurement is performed with the CMS detector at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 450 inverse microbarns collected at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The dipion cross section, measured for single-pion transverse momentum pt >0.2 GeV and rapidity…
We report a measurement of the exclusive production of pairs of charged pions in proton-proton collisions, dominated by the process $pp \rightarrow p^{(*)} π^{+}π^{-} p^{(*)}$, where $\rm p^{(*)}$ stands for a diffractively dissociated proton, the $π^{+} π^{-}$ pair is emitted at central rapidities $y$, and the incident protons stay intact or dissociate without detection ${\rm p^{(*)}}$. The measurement is performed with the CMS detector at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 450~$μ$b$^{-1}$ collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV in 201…
The pseudorapidity distributions of charged hadrons in proton-lead collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s_{_\mathrm{NN}}} =$ 5.02 and 8.16 TeV are presented. The measurements are based on data samples collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The number of primary charged hadrons produced in non-single-diffractive proton-lead collisions is determined in the pseudorapidity range $|η_\mathrm{lab}| <$ 2.4. The charged-hadron multiplicity distributions are compared to the predictions from theoretical calculations and Monte Carlo event generators. In the center-of-mass pse…
Evidence for the production of top quarks in heavy ion collisions is reported in a data sample of lead-lead collisions recorded in 2018 by the CMS experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}} =$ 5.02 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.7\pm0.1\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$. Top quark pair ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) production is measured in events with two opposite-sign high-$p_\mathrm{T}$ isolated leptons ($\ell^\pm\ell^\mp =\,\mathrm{e}^{+} \mathrm{e}^{-},\,μ^{+} μ^{-},\,\mathrm{and}\,\mathrm{e}^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$). We test the sensitivity to the $\mathrm{…
A search for exclusive or semi-exclusive photon pair production, pp to p(*) + photon pair + p(*) (where p(*) stands for a diffractively-dissociated proton), and the observation of exclusive and semi-exclusive electron pair production, pp to p(*) + ee + p(*), in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, are presented. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC at low instantaneous luminosities. Candidate photon pair or electron pair events are selected by requiring the presence of two phot…
