Measurements are presented of the single-diffractive dijet cross section and the diffractive cross section as a function of the proton fractional momentum loss $ξ$ and the four-momentum transfer squared $t$. Both processes pp$\to$pX and pp$\to$Xp, ie with the proton scattering to either side of the interaction point, are measured, where X includes at least two jets; the results of the two processes are averaged. The analyses are based on data collected simultaneously with the CMS and TOTEM detectors at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 8 TeV during a dedicated run with $β^{\ast} =$ 90 m at low instantaneous luminosity and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 37.5 nb$^{-1}$. The single-diffractive dijet cross section $σ^\mathrm{pX}_{\mathrm{jj}}$, in the kinematic region $ξ\lt$ 0.1, 0.03 $\lt |$t$| \lt 1$ GeV$^2$, with at least two jets with transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T} >$ 40 GeV, and pseudorapidity $|η| \lt$ 4.4, is 21.7$\pm$0.9 (stat)$^{+3.0}_{-3.3}$ (syst) $\pm$ 0.9 (lum) nb. The ratio of the single-diffractive to inclusive dijet yields, normalised per unit of $ξ$, is presented as a function of $x$, the longitudinal momentum fraction of the proton carried by the struck parton. The ratio in the kinematic region defined above, for $x$ values in the range $-$2.9 $\leq \log_{10} x \leq$ $-$1.6, is $R = (σ^\mathrm{pX}_{\mathrm{jj}}/Δξ)/σ_{\mathrm{jj}} =$ 0.025$\pm$0.001 (stat) $\pm$ 0.003 (syst), where $σ^\mathrm{pX}_{\mathrm{jj}}$ and $σ_{\mathrm{jj}}$ are the single-diffractive and inclusive dijet cross sections, respectively. The results are compared with predictions from models of diffractive and nondiffractive interactions. Monte Carlo predictions based on the HERA diffractive parton distribution functions agree well with the data when corrected for the effect of soft rescattering between the spectator partons.
At the LHC, diffractive physics will be explored by the dedicated experiment TOTEM whose Technical Design Report has been approved in Summer 2004. The experimental programme will be carried out partly in TOTEM standalone mode for purely forward phenomena like elastic scattering, and partly in collaboration with CMS for processes requiring a full rapidity coverage. ATLAS and ALICE are interested in diffraction for a later stage. This article presents the TOTEM/CMS running scenario for diffractive physics in the first year of LHC. We discuss which processes are within reach and with which statis…
A new H1 measurement of diffractive dijet and 3-jet production cross sections in diffractive deep inelastic scattering events of the type ep->eXY is presented. The data constrain well the diffractive gluon distribution. At low x-pom, a calculation based on perturbative QCD is in a reasonable agreement with the data.
We present evidence for diffractive exclusive dijet production with an invariant dijet mass greater than 100 GeV in data collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. A discriminant based on calorimeter information is used to measure a significant number of events with little energy (typically less than 10 GeV) outside the dijet system, consistent with the diffractive exclusive dijet production topology. The probability for these events to be explained by other dijet production processes is $2 \times 10^{-5}$, corresponding to a 4.1 standard deviation significance.
The TOTEM experiment at the LHC is dedicated to the measurement of the total pp cross section and to the study of elastic scattering and of diffractive dissociation processes. TOTEM is here presented with a general overview on the main features of its experimental apparatus and of its physics programme.
The differential cross section measurement for dijet production at proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV is presented as a function of an approximation for the fractional momentum loss of the scattered proton ($\tildeξ$), an useful observable to distinguish model predictions of diffractive and nondiffractive components. The data was collected by the CMS detector at low instantaneous luminosity runs at LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2.7 {\rm nb}^{-1}$. This is the first observation of single diffractive dijets at LHC.
Differential dijet cross sections in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering are measured with the H1 detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 51.5 pb-1. The selected events are of the type ep --> eXY, where the system X contains at least two jets and is well separated in rapidity from the low mass proton dissociation system Y. The dijet data are compared with QCD predictions at next-to-leading order based on diffractive parton distribution functions previously extracted from measurements of inclusive diffractive deep-inelastic scattering. The prediction describes the dijet data well a…
Measurements are presented of differential dijet cross sections in diffractive photoproduction (Q^2<0.01 GeV^2) and deep-inelastic scattering processes (DIS, 4<Q^2<80 GeV^2). The event topology is given by ep-> e X Y, in which the system X, containing at least two jets, is separated from a leading low-mass proton remnant system Y by a large rapidity gap. The dijet cross sections are compared with NLO QCD predictions based on diffractive parton densities previously obtained from a QCD analysis of inclusive diffractive DIS cross sections by H1. In DIS, the dijet data are well described, supporti…
The cross section for dijet production in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented as a function of xi, a variable that approximates the fractional momentum loss of the scattered proton in single-diffractive events. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of 2.7 inverse nanobarns collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at low instantaneous luminosities, and uses events with jet transverse momentum of at least 20 GeV. The dijet cross section results are compared to the predictions of diffractive and nondiffractive models. The low-xi data show a significant contribution from di…
The production of dijets is measured in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering at HERA. The data were recorded with the H1 detector at DESY in the years 2003-2007. Diffractive events are selected by requiring a gap in the rapidity distribution of the hadronic systen, where no particles are produced. Two jets are selected with transverse momenta in the hadronic-centre-of-mass system larger than 4 and 5.5GeV, respectively. Cross sections are measured single- and doubledifferentially in various kinematic quantities. The data are found to be in good agreement with NLO QCD calculations based on diff…
Exclusive and diffractive physics measurements are important for the better understanding of the non-perturbative regime of QCD. Two recent results of the CMS experiment is presented in this paper. The total and differential cross sections of central exclusive $π^+π^-$ production are measured at 5.02 and 13 TeV in the $p_{\mathrm{T}}(π) > 0.2~$GeV/$c$ and $|η(π)| < 2.4$ kinematic region. The invariant mass distribution is fitted by the sum of a continuum and four interfering relativistic Breit-Wigner functions. In the second part of the paper the measurement of the single diffractive dijets is…
The TOTEM experiment with its detectors in the forward region of CMS and the Roman Pots along the beam line will determine the total pp cross-section via the optical theorem by measuring both the elastic cross-section and the total inelastic rate. TOTEM will have dedicated runs with special high-beta* beam optics and a reduced number of proton bunches resulting in a low effective luminosity between 1.6 x 10^{28} cm^{-2} s^{-1} and 2.4 x 10^{29} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. In these special conditions also an absolute luminosity measurement will be made, allowing the calibration of the CMS luminosity monito…
Jet and charm quark production in diffractive interactions is sensitive to the partonic structure of the diffractive exchange. This article reviews recent cross section measurements of such processes in both deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) regime and photoproduction (PHP) from the HERA ep collider experiments. The cross sections are compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on factorisation theorem.
A measurement is presented of single- and double-differential dijet cross sections in diffractive deep-inelastic $ep$ scattering at HERA using data collected by the H1 experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 290 pb^{-1}. The investigated phase space is spanned by the photon virtuality in the range of 4<Q^{2}<100 GeV^{2} and by the fractional proton longitudinal momentum loss x_pom<0.03. The resulting cross sections are compared with next-to-leading order QCD predictions based on diffractive parton distribution functions and the value of the strong coupling constant is extracted…
We report new results from CDF on single-diffractive dijet and W/Z production, and on exclusive dijet, diphoton, and dilepton production in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measured exclusive dijet and diphoton cross sections provide a test of theoretical predictions for exclusive Higgs production at the LHC.
Recent CMS results on diffraction are presented. These include the measurements of the soft diffractive cross sections, of the forward rapidity gap cross section, of the diffractive dijet cross section, the measurement of a large rapidity gap in W and Z boson events and the measurement of the pseudorapidity distribution of charged particles in a single diffractive enhanced sample. This last measurement is the first common result of the CMS and TOTEM collaborations. Some prospects of common CMS-TOTEM data taking are also discussed.
The cross section of diffractive deep-inelastic scattering ep \rightarrow eXp is measured, where the system X contains at least two jets and the leading final state proton is detected in the H1 Forward Proton Spectrometer. The measurement is performed for fractional proton longitudinal momentum loss xIP < 0.1 and covers the range 0.1 < |t| < 0.7 GeV2 in squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex and 4 < Q2 < 110 GeV2 in photon virtuality. The differential cross sections extrapolated to |t| < 1 GeV2 are in agreement with next-toleading order QCD predictions based on diffractive parton …
The production of dijets in diffractive deep inelastic scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of $61 \pbi$. The dijet cross section has been measured for virtualities of the exchanged virtual photon, $5 < Q^2 < 100 \gev^2$, and $γ^{*} p$ centre-of-mass energies, 100 < W < 250 GeV. The jets, identified using the inclusive k_{T} algorithm in the $γ^* p$ frame, were required to have a transverse energy $E^*_{T, \rm jet} > 4 \gev$ and the jet with the highest transverse energy was required to have $E^*_{T,\rm jet} > 5 \gev$. All jets were require…
The cross section of the diffractive process e^+p -> e^+Xp is measured at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV, where the system X contains at least two jets and the leading final state proton p is detected in the H1 Very Forward Proton Spectrometer. The measurement is performed in photoproduction with photon virtualities Q^2 <2 GeV^2 and in deep-inelastic scattering with 4 GeV^2<Q^2<80 GeV^2. The results are compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on diffractive parton distribution functions as extracted from measurements of inclusive cross sections in diffractive deep-inelasti…
Measurements are presented of single and double-differential dijet cross sections in diffractive photoproduction based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 47 pb^-1. The events are of the type ep -> eXY, where the hadronic system X contains at least two jets and is separated by a large rapidity gap from the system Y, which consists of a leading proton or low-mass proton excitation. The dijet cross sections are compared with QCD calculations at next-to-leading order and with a Monte Carlo model based on leading order matrix elements with parton showers. The measured cross sections …
Diffractive photoproduction of dijets was measured with the ZEUS detector at the ep collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 77.2 pb-1. The measurements were made in the kinematic range Q^2 < 1 GeV^2, 0.20 < y < 0.85 and x_pom < 0.025, where Q^2 is the photon virtuality, y is the inelasticity and x_pom is the fraction of the proton momentum taken by the diffractive exchange. The two jets with the highest transverse energy, E_T^jet, were required to satisfy E_T^jet > 7.5 and 6.5 GeV, respectively, and to lie in the pseudorapidity range -1.5 < eta^jet < 1.5. Differential cross sections we…
Recent results on diffractive dijet and vector boson production and exclusive dijet production from the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment are presented.
ZEUS inclusive diffractive cross-section measurements have been used in a DGLAP next-to-leading-order QCD analysis to extract the diffractive parton distribution functions. Data on diffractive dijet production in deep inelastic scattering have also been included to costrain the gluon density. Predictions based on the extracted parton densities are compared to diffractive charm and dijet photoproduction data.
Differential dijet cross sections have been measured with the ZEUS detector for photoproduction events in which the hadronic final state containing the jets is separated with respect to the outgoing proton direction by a large rapidity gap. The cross section has been measured as a function of the fraction of the photon (x_gamma^OBS) and pomeron (beta^OBS) momentum participating in the production of the dijet system. The observed x_gamma^OBS dependence shows evidence for the presence of a resolved- as well as a direct-photon component. The measured cross section d(sigma)/d(beta^OBS) increases a…
The production of dijets with a tagged forward proton is measured at HERA. The data were recorded with the H1 detector at DESY in the years 2006-2007. Events with a leading proton are detected using the very forward proton spectrometer of the H1 detector. Two jets are selected with transverse momenta transverse momenta in the hadronic-centre-of-mass larger than 4 and 5.5GeV, respectively. The analysis is performed both in the regime of deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), with momentum transfer $Q{^2} > 4$ GeV${^2}$ and for photoproduction (γp), with $Q{^2} < 2$ GeV${^2}$. Cross sections are measu…
We discuss the prospects of diffractive dijet photoproduction at the EIC to distinguish different fits of diffractive proton PDFs, different schemes of factorization breaking, to determine diffractive nuclear PDFs and pion PDFs from leading neutron production.
We report on a study of diffractive dijet production in $\bar{p}p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron $\bar{p}p$ collider. A data sample from 310 pb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by triggering on a high transverse energy jet, $E_T^{jet}$, in coincidence with a recoil antiproton detected in a Roman pot spectrometer is used to measure the ratio of single-diffractive to inclusive-dijet event rates as a function of $x^{\bar p}$ of the interacting parton in the antiproton, the Bjorken-$x$, $x^{\bar p}_{Bj}$, and a $Q^2\approx (E_T^{jet})…
Recent experimental data on dijet cross sections in diffractive photoproduction at HERA collider are analysed with an emphasis on QCD factorisation breaking effects. The possible sources of the contradiction in conclusions of H1 and ZEUS collaborations such as different hadronisation corrections and different phase space of both analyses are studied.
Results on hard diffraction from CDF are reviewed with emphasis on the determination of the diffractive structure function of the (anti)proton from single diffractive and double Pomeron exchange dijet production. Comparison of the diffractive dijet results with predictions based on diffractive deep inelastic scattering at HERA shows a breakdown of conventional QCD factorization. A similar breakdown is observed within the CDF results in comparing the structure functions obtained from single diffraction and double Pomeron exchange.
We report a measurement of the diffractive structure function $F_{jj}^D$ of the antiproton obtained from a study of dijet events produced in association with a leading antiproton in $\bar pp$ collisions at $\sqrt s=630$ GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The ratio of $F_{jj}^D$ at $\sqrt s=630$ GeV to $F_{jj}^D$ obtained from a similar measurement at $\sqrt s=1800$ GeV is compared with expectations from QCD factorization and with theoretical predictions. We also report a measurement of the $ξ$ ($x$-Pomeron) and $β$ ($x$ of parton in Pomeron) dependence of $F_{jj}^D$ at $\sqrt s=1800$ GeV. In the re…
A $6.8 \ {\rm nb^{-1}}$ sample of $pp$ collision data collected under low-luminosity conditions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used to study diffractive dijet production. Events containing at least two jets with $p_\mathrm{T} > 20$ GeV are selected and analysed in terms of variables which discriminate between diffractive and non-diffractive processes. Cross sections are measured differentially in $Δη^F$, the size of the observable forward region of pseudorapidity which is devoid of hadronic activity, and in an estimator, $\tildeξ$, of the fractional…
The H1 and Zeus collaborations have measured the inclusive diffractive DIS cross section ep -> eXp and these measurements are in good agreement within a normalisation uncertainty. Diffractive parton density functions (DPDFs) have been extracted from NLO QCD fits to inclusive measurements of diffractive DIS and the predictions of these DPDFs are compared with measurements of diffractive dijets in DIS, testing the validity of the factorisation approximations used in their extraction. H1 then use these diffractive dijets in DIS data to provide further constraints in a combined QCD fit, resulting …
Results from a phenomenological analysis of dijet and W hard diffractive hadroproduction at Fermilab Tevatron energies are reported. The theoretical framework employed here is a modified version of the Ingelman-Schlein approach which includes DGLAP-evolved structure functions. Different from what has been achieved by the DESY ep HERA reactions, a reasonable overall description of such diffractive hadron processes is obtained only when a complex, quark-rich Pomeron structure function is employed in the calculation.
We have calculated diffractive dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) at low-Q^2 and next-to-leading order (NLO) of perturbative QCD, including contributions from direct and resolved photons. We study how the cross section depends on the factorization scheme and scale M_γat the virtual photon vertex for the occurance of factorization breaking. The strong M_γ-dependence, which is present when only the resolved cross section is suppressed, is tamed by intodrucing the suppression also in the initial-state NLO correction of the direct part.
We present the first NLO QCD analysis of single-diffractive dijet production in proton-antiproton collisions. By comparing the ratio of single- and non-diffractive cross sections to data from the Tevatron, the rapidity-gap survival probability is determined as a function of the momentum fraction of the parton in the antiproton. Assuming Regge factorization, this probability can be interpreted as a suppression factor for the diffractive structure function measured in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA. In contrast to the observations for photoproduction, the suppression factor in proton-antiprot…
We perform a NLO QCD analysis of single-diffractive dijet production in proton-antiproton collisions. In contrast to the observations for photoproduction, the suppression factor in proton-antiproton colli…
The H1 and Zeus collaborations have measured the inclusive diffractive DIS cross section ep -> eXp and these measurements are in good agreement within a normalisation uncertainty. Diffractive parton density functions (DPDFs) have been extracted from NLO QCD fits to these data and the predictions of these DPDFs compare well with measurements of diffractive dijets in DIS, proving the validity of the factorisation approximations used in their extraction. The inclusive and dijet data are then used in a combined fit to constrain the diffractive singlet and gluon with good precision over the full ph…
Hadronic processes in which hard diffractive production takes place have been observed and analyzed in collider experiments for several years. The experimental rates of diffractive W's and dijets measured at the Tevatron and the cross sections of diffractively produced dijets recently obtained at the HERA experiment are the object of this analysis. We use the Pomeron structure function obtained from the HERA data by two different approaches to calculate the rates and cross sections for these processes. The comparison of theoretical predictions with the measured values reveals some discrepancie…
We perform next-to-leading order calculations of the single-diffractive and non-diffractive cross sections for dijet production in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron. By comparing their ratio to the data published by the CDF collaboration for two different center-of-mass energies, we deduce the rapidity-gap survival probability as a function of the momentum fraction of the parton in the antiproton. Assuming Regge factorization, this probability can be interpreted as a suppression factor for the diffractive structure function measured in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA. In contrast …
Interactions of the type ep -> eXY are studied, where the component X of the hadronic final state contains two jets and is well separated in rapidity from a leading baryonic system Y. Analyses are performed of both resolved and direct photoproduction and of deep-inelastic scattering with photon virtualities in the range 7.5 < Q^2 < 80 GeV^2. Cross sections are presented where Y has mass M_Y < 1.6 GeV, the squared four-momentum transferred at the proton vertex satisfies |t| < 1 GeV^2 and the two jets each have transverse momentum p^jet_T > 5 GeV relative to the photon direction in the rest fram…
We calculate diffractive dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering at next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD, including contributions from direct and resolved photons, and compare our predictions to preliminary data from the H1 collaboration at HERA. We study how the cross section depends on the factorization scheme and scale M_γat the virtual photon vertex for the occurrence of factorization breaking. The strong M_γ-dependence, which is present when only the resolved cross section is suppressed, is tamed by introducing the suppression also into the initial-state NLO correction of the d…
This article contains a summary of the recent results in diffractive physics at the Tevatron. Results from the CDF diffraction program include the single diffractive to non-diffractive ratio in dijet events, observation of exclusive $e^+e^-$ production via two-photon exchange, hints of exclusive $γγ$ production via Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE), and the observation of exclusive dijet production via DPE. A summary of the current plans for the DØ diffractive physics program is also presented.
We study exclusive dijet production in coherent diffractive processes in deep inelastic scattering and real (and virtual) photon-hadron ($γ^{(*)}$-h) collisions in the Color Glass Condensate formalism at leading order. We show that the diffractive dijet cross section is sensitive to the color-dipole orientation in the transverse plane, and is a good probe of possible correlations between the $q\bar{q}$-dipole transverse separation vector $\r$ and the dipole impact parameter $\b$. We also investigate the diffractive dijet azimuthal angle correlations and $t$-distributions in $γ^{(*)}$-h collisi…
We calculate the cross section of diffractive dijet photoproduction in $ep$ scattering at next-to-leading order (NLO) of perturbative QCD (pQCD), which we supplement by a model of factorization breaking for the resolved-photon contribution. In this model, the suppression depends on the flavor and momentum fraction of the partons in the photon. We show that within experimental and theoretical uncertainties, the resulting approach provides a good description of the available HERA data in most of the bins. Hence, taken together with the observation that NLO pQCD explains well the data on diffract…
In this paper we consider a small-$x$ model for gluon GTMDs that we fit to data on diffractive dijet production in electron-proton collisions obtained by HERA's H1 Collaboration. Assuming a small number of free parameters, each with a physical motivation, we are able to describe those data fairly well and with this model we obtain predictions for the EIC for both electroproduction and photoproduction which may allow to further test the underlying GTMD description. In the general discussion of the impact parameter dependence we recall some subtle issues related to localization of states, choice…
The TOTEM experiment at the LHC measures the total proton-proton cross section with the luminosity-independent method and the elastic proton-proton cross-section over a wide |t|-range. It also performs a comprehensive study of diffraction, spanning from cross-section measurements of individual diffractive processes to the analysis of their event topologies. Hard diffraction will be studied in collaboration with CMS taking advantage of the large common rapidity coverage for charged and neutral particle detection and the large variety of trigger possibilities even at large luminosities. TOTEM wi…
In the framework of collinear factorization and next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD, we make predictions for inclusive and diffractive dijet photoproduction in electron-proton and electron-nucleus scattering in the EIC kinematics. We establish kinematic ranges in the ${\bar p}_T$, ${\bar η}$, $x_A^{\rm obs}$ and $x_γ^{\rm obs}$ variables, quantify sensitivity to small-$x$ nuclear PDFs, and analyze various scenarios of factorization breaking in the case of diffractive scattering.
The TOTEM experiment has measured the charged particle pseudorapidity density dN_{ch}/deta in pp collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV for 5.3<|eta|<6.4 in events with at least one charged particle with transverse momentum above 40 MeV/c in this pseudorapidity range. This extends the analogous measurement performed by the other LHC experiments to the previously unexplored forward eta region. The measurement refers to more than 99% of non-diffractive processes and to single and double diffractive processes with diffractive masses above ~3.4 GeV/c^2, corresponding to about 95% of the total inelastic cro…
We present a first, detailed study of diffractive dijet photoproduction at the recently approved electron-ion collider (EIC) at BNL. Apart from establishing the kinematic reaches for various beam types, energies and kinematic cuts, we make precise predictions at next-to-leading order (NLO) of QCD in the most important kinematic variables. We show that the EIC will provide new and more precise information on the diffractive parton density functions (PDFs) in the pomeron than previously obtained at HERA, illuminate the still disputed mechanism of global vs.\ only resolved-photon factorization br…
Pseudorapidity (eta) distributions of charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV are measured in the ranges abs(eta) < 2.2 and 5.3 < abs(eta) < 6.4 covered by the CMS and TOTEM detectors, respectively. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 45 inverse microbarns. Measurements are presented for three event categories. The most inclusive category is sensitive to 91-96% of the total inelastic proton-proton cross section. The other two categories are disjoint subsets of the inclusive sample that are either enhanced or depleted in single d…
We calculate the cross section of inclusive dijet photoproduction in ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) of heavy ions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider using next-to-leading order perturbative QCD and demonstrate that it provides a good description of the ATLAS data. We study the role of this data in constraining nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) using the Bayesian reweighting technique and find that it can reduce current uncertainties of nPDFs at small $x$ by a factor of 2. We also make predictions for diffractive dijet photoproduction in UPCs and examine its potential to shed ligh…
Diffraction plays an exceptional role in DIS off heavy nuclei. First, diffraction into hard dijets is an unique probe of the unintegrated glue in the target. Second, because diffraction makes 50 per cent of total DIS off a heavy target, understanding diffraction in a saturation regime is crucial for a definition of saturated nuclear parton densities. After brief comments on the Nikolaev-Zakharov (NZ) pomeron-splitting mechanism for diffractive hard dijet production, I review an extension of the Nikolaev-Schafer-Schwiete (NSS) analysis of diffractive dijet production off nuclei to the definitio…
The H1 and ZEUS experiments are measuring diffractive interactions in ep collisions at HERA. Performing QCD fits of these data with NLO DGLAP, diffractive parton distribution functions can be calculated. These diffractive PDFs can be used to test QCD factorisation with dijet and charm data.
Hard processes in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering can be described by a factorisation into parton-level subprocesses and diffractive parton distributions. In this framework, cross sections for inclusive dijet production in diffractive deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS) are computed to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD accuracy and compared to a comprehensive selection of data. Predictions for the total cross sections, 39 single-differential and four double-differential distributions for six measurements at HERA by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations are calculated. In the …
The cross section of inclusive diffractive process ep -> eXp was measured within a wide kinematic range in the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA. Results obtained by different experiments and methods are compatible within measurement uncertainties. The measurements were subjected to DGLAP next-to-leading order QCD global fits and the diffractive parton distribution functions (DPDFs) of the proton were determined with noticeably reduced uncertainties due to very high precision of the data. The gluon density precision was much improved in fits which also included data on dijet production in diffra…
At the Tevatron, the total p_bar-p cross-section has been measured by CDF at 546 GeV and 1.8 TeV, and by E710/E811 at 1.8 TeV. The two results at 1.8 TeV disagree by 2.6 standard deviations, introducing big uncertainties into extrapolations to higher energies. At the LHC, the TOTEM collaboration is preparing to resolve the ambiguity by measuring the total p-p cross-section with a precision of about 1 %. Like at the Tevatron experiments, the luminosity-independent method based on the Optical Theorem will be used. The Tevatron experiments have also performed a vast range of studies about soft an…
The first double diffractive cross-section measurement in the very forward region has been carried out by the TOTEM experiment at the LHC with center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV. By utilizing the very forward TOTEM tracking detectors T1 and T2, which extend up to |eta|=6.5, a clean sample of double diffractive pp events was extracted. From these events, we measured the cross-section sigma_DD =(116 +- 25) mub for events where both diffractive systems have 4.7 <|eta|_min < 6.5 .
Preliminary results from the D0 experiment on jet production with rapidity gaps in $p\bar{p}$ collisions are presented. A class of dijet events with a forward rapidity gap is observed at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 1800 GeV and 630 GeV. The number of events with rapidity gaps at both center-of-mass energies is significantly greater than the expectation from multiplicity fluctuations and is consistent with a hard single diffractive process. A class of events with two forward gaps and central dijets are also observed at 1800 GeV. This topology is consistent with hard double pomeron exch…
After new publications of H1 data for the diffractive photoproduction of dijets, which overlap with the earlier published H1 data and the recently published data of the ZEUS collaboration, have appeared, we have recalculated the cross sections for this process in next-to-leading order (NLO) of perturbative QCD to see whether they can be interpreted consistently. The results of these calculations are compared to the data of both collaborations. We find that the NLO cross sections disagree with the data, showing that factorization breaking occurs at that order. If direct and resolved contributio…
We make predictions for the cross sections of diffractive dijet photoproduction in $pp$, $pA$ and $AA$ ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the LHC during Runs 1 and 2 using next-to-leading perturbative QCD. We find that the resulting cross sections are sufficiently large and, compared to lepton-proton scattering at HERA, have an enhanced sensitivity to small observed momentum fractions in the diffractive exchange, commonly denoted $z_{P}^{\rm jets}$, and an unprecedented reach in the invariant mass of the photon-nucleon system $W$. We examine two competing schemes of diffractive QCD factoriza…
