We analyze the role of Lorentz symmetry in the perturbative non-gravitational anomalies for a single family of fermions. The theory is assumed to be translational invariant, power-counting renormalizable and based on a local action, but is allowed to have general Lorentz violating operators. We study the conservation of global and gauge currents associate with general internal symmetry groups and find, by using a perturbative approach, that Lorentz symmetry does not participate in the clash of symmetries that leads to the anomalies. We first analyze the triangle graphs and prove that there are regulators for which the anomalous part of the Ward identities exactly reproduces the Lorentz invariant case. Then we show, by means of a regulator independent argument, that the anomaly cancellation conditions derived in Lorentz invariant theories remain necessary ingredients for anomaly freedom.
The Wess-Zumino consistency conditions for Lorentz and diffeomorphism anomalies are discussed by introducing an operator 'delta' which allows to decompose the exterior derivative as a BRS commutator.
In this work we study the issue of gauge anomalies in Lorentz-violating QED. To do so, we opt to use the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin formalism within the algebraic renormalization approach, reducing our study to a cohomology problem. Since this approach is independent of the renormalization scheme, the results obtained here are expected to be general. We find that the Lorentz-violating QED is free of gauge anomalies to all orders in perturbation theory.
Identification of the diagrams that can lead to gauge anomalies in the (minimal) Lorentz- and $CPT$-violating extension of quantum electrodynamics reveals these are the electron self-energy and vertex correction (related to the Ward-Takahashi identity), the photon self-energy (related to the vacuum polarization tensor transversality), and the three-photon vertex diagrams. All but the latter were explicitly verified to be free of anomalies to first order in loop expansion. Here we provide this remaining evaluation and verify the absence of anomalies in this process.
We present a manifestly supersymmetric procedure for calculating the contributions from matter loops to the mixed Kähler-gauge and to the mixed Kähler- Lorentz anomalies in $N=1, D=4$ supergravity-matter systems. We show how this procedure leads to the well-known result for the mixed Kähler-gauge anomaly. For general supergravity-matter systems the mixed Kähler-Lorentz anomaly is found to contain a term proportional to ${\cal R}^2$ with a background field dependent coefficient as well as terms proportional to $(C_{mnpq})^2$ and to the Gauss-Bonnet topological density. We briefly comment on the…
We calculate the quantum corrections to the Lorentz algebra for chiral Weyl fermions interacting with an external $U(1)$ gauge field in a background Riemann-Cartan (RC) spacetime. This was achieved by setting up the equal-time commutation relations (ETCR) for the canonical spin current of chiral Weyl fermions. Furthermore, these quantum corrections lead to an order sensitive commutator, i.e., swapping the Lorentz generators in the commutator doesn't merely lead to a sign change, but rather a completely different correction term to the Lorentz algebra. Thus, the algebra of Lorentz is altered du…
In this paper, we discuss the chiral anomaly in a Lorentz-breaking extension of QED which, besides the common terms that are present in the Standard Model Extension, includes some dimension-five nonminimal couplings. We find, using the Fujikawa formalism, that these nonminimal couplings induce new terms in the anomaly which depend on the Lorentz-violating parameters. Perturbative calculations are also carried out in order to investigate whether or not new ambiguous Carroll-Field-Jackiw terms are induced in the effective action.
In this paper we first discuss the analysis regarding the role of Lorentz symmetry in the perturbative non-gravitational anomalies for a family of fermions, which has been recently performed in arXiv:0809.0184. The theory is assumed to be translational invariant, power-counting renormalizable and based on a local action, but is allowed to have general Lorentz violating operators, including those that break CPT. The main result is that Lorentz symmetry does not participate in the clash of symmetries that leads to the anomalies. Moreover, here we provide a simple "semiclassical" argument that sh…
We determine the two--dimensional Weyl, Lorentz and $κ$--anomalies in the $D=10$ Green--Schwarz heterotic string sigma--model, in an $SO(1,9)$-Lorentz covariant background gauge, and prove their cancellation.
The quantum consistency of sigma-models describing the dynamics of extended objects in a curved background requires the cancellation of their world-volume anomalies, which are conformal anomalies for the heterotic string and $SO(1,5)$ Lorentz-anomalies for the heterotic five-brane, and of their ten dimensional target space anomalies. In determining these anomalies in a $D=10$ Lorentz-covariant back-ground gauge we find that for the heterotic string the worldvolume anomalies cancel for 32 heterotic fermions while for the conjectured heterotic five-brane they cancel for only 16 heterotic fermion…
We systematically study Lorentz symmetry extensions in quantum field theories (QFTs) and their 't Hooft anomalies via cobordism. The total symmetry $G'$ can be expressed in terms of the extension of Lorentz symmetry $G_L$ by an internal global symmetry $G$ as $1 \to G \to G' \to G_L \to 1$. By enumerating all possible $G_L$ and symmetry extensions, other than the familiar SO/Spin/O/Pin$^{\pm}$ groups, we introduce a new EPin group (in contrast to DPin), and provide natural physical interpretations to exotic groups E($d$), EPin($d$), (SU(2)$\times$E(d))/$\mathbb{Z}_2$, (SU(2)$\times$EPin(d))/$\…
A theory of closed bosonic string in time-like gauge, related in Lorentz-invariant way with the world sheet, is considered. Absence of quantum anomalies in this theory is shown.
The computation of $κ$-anomalies in the Green-Schwarz heterotic superstring sigma-model and the corresponding Wess-Zumino consistency condition constitute a powerful alternative approach for the derivation of manifestly supersymmetric string effective actions. With respect to the beta-function approach this technique presents the advantage that a result which is obtained with the computation of beta-functions at $n$ loops can be obtained through the calculation of $κ$-anomalies at \hbox{$n-1$} loops. In this paper we derive by a direct one-loop perturbative computation the $κ$-anomaly associat…
Causal rigid particles whose action includes an {\it arbitrary} dependence on the world-line extrinsic curvature are considered. General classes of solutions are constructed, including {\it causal tachyonic} ones. The Hamiltonian formulation is developed in detail except for one degenerate situation for which only partial results are given and requiring a separate analysis. However, for otherwise generic rigid particles, the precise specification of Hamiltonian gauge symmetries is obtained with in particular the identification of the Teichm$\ddot{\rm u}$ller and modular spaces for these system…
We analyze the Chern-Simons-like term generation in the CPT-odd Lorentz-violating Yang-Mills theory interacting with fermions. Moreover, we study the anomalies of this model as well as its quantum stability. The whole analysis is performed within the algebraic renormalization theory, which is independent of the renormalization scheme. In addition, all results are valid to all orders in perturbation theory. We find that the Chern-Simons-like term is not generated by radiative corrections, just like its Abelian version. Additionally, the model is also free of gauge anomalies and quantum stable.
We study the Standard-Model extensions that have the following features: they violate Lorentz invariance explicitly at high energies; they are unitary, local, polynomial and renormalizable by weighted power counting; they contain the vertex (LH)^2, which gives Majorana masses to the neutrinos after symmetry breaking, and possibly four fermion interactions; they do not contain right-handed neutrinos, nor other extra fields. We study the simplest CPT invariant Standard-Model extension of this type in detail and prove the cancellation of gauge anomalies. We investigate the low-energy recovery of …
Certain (3+1)-dimensional chiral non-Abelian gauge theories have been shown to exhibit a new type of global gauge anomaly, which in the Hamiltonian formulation is due to the fermion zero-modes of a Z-string-like configuration of the gauge potential and the corresponding spectral flow. Here, we clarify the relation between this Z-string global gauge anomaly and other anomalies in both 3+1 and 2+1 dimensions. We then point out a possible trade-off between the (3+1)-dimensional Z-string global gauge anomaly and the violation of CPT and Lorentz invariance.
New phenomenological models of Quantum Gravity have suggested that a Lorentz-Invariant discrete spacetime structure may become manifest through a nonstandard coupling of matter fields and spacetime curvature. On the other hand, there is strong experimental evidence suggesting that neutrino oscillations cannot be described by simply considering neutrinos as massive particles. In this manuscript we motivate and construct one particular phenomenological model of Quantum Gravity that could account for the so-called neutrino anomalies.
Quantization of 4-dimensional Nambu-Goto theory of open string in light cone gauge, related in Lorentz-invariant way with the world sheet, is performed. Obtained quantum theory has no anomalies in Lorentz group. Determined spin-mass spectra of the theory have Regge-like behavior and do not contain the tachyon. Vertex operators of interaction theory, acting in the physical subspace, are constructed.
We perform a quantization of 4-dimensional Nambu-Goto theory of open string in light cone gauge, related in Lorentz-invariant way with the world sheet. This allows to obtain a quantum theory without anomalies in Lorentz group. We consider a special type of gauge fixing conditions, imposed in oscillator sector of the theory, which lead to a relatively simple Hamiltonian mechanics, convenient for canonical quantization. We discuss the algebraic and geometric properties of this mechanics and determine its mass spectrum for the states of spin singlet S=0.
We reconsider the idea of identifying the Higgs field as the internal component of a gauge field in the flat space R^4XS^1/Z_2, by relaxing the constraint of having unbroken SO(4,1) Lorentz symmetry in the bulk. In this way, we show that the main common problems of previous models of this sort, namely the prediction of a too light Higgs and top mass, as well as of a too low compactification scale, are all solved. We mainly focus our attention on a previously constructed model. We show how, with few minor modifications and by relaxing the requirement of SO(4,1) symmetry, a potentially realistic…
Starting from a manifestly Lorentz- and diffeomorphism-invariant classical action we perform a perturbative derivation of the gravitational anomalies for chiral bosons in 4n+2 dimensions. The manifest classical invariance is achieved using a newly developed method based on a scalar auxiliary field and two new bosonic local symmetries. The resulting anomalies coincide with the ones predicted by the index theorem. In the two-dimensional case, moreover, we perform an exact covariant computation of the effective action for a chiral boson (a scalar) which is seen to coincide with the effective acti…
I study variations of the fermionic determinant for a nonabelian Dirac fermion with external vector and axial vector sources. I consider different regularizations, leading to different chiral anomalies when the variations are chiral transformations. For these different regularizations, I then consider variations associated with Poincare transformations. I find that both Lorentz and translational invariance are anomalously violated in general, but that they are respected when the variations of the determinant are regularized to give a Wess-Zumino consistent anomaly (the Bardeen anomaly). If the…
Relaxing the Bondi gauge, the solution space of three-dimensional gravity in the metric formulation has been shown to contain an additional free function that promotes the boundary metric to a Lorentz or Carroll frame, in asymptotically AdS or flat spacetimes. We pursue this analysis and show that the solution space also admits a finite symplectic structure, obtained taking advantage of the built-in ambiguities. The smoothness of the flat limit of the AdS symplectic structure selects a prescription in which the holographic anomaly appears in the boundary Lorentz symmetry, that rotates the fram…
We revisit quantum field theory anomalies, emphasizing the interplay with diffeomorphisms and supersymmetry. The Ward identities of the latter induce Noether currents of all continuous symmetries, and we point out how these consistent currents are replaced by their covariant form through the appearance of the Bardeen-Zumino currents, which play a central role in our study. For supersymmetry Ward identities, two systematic methods for solving the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions are discussed: anomaly inflow and anomaly descent. The simplest inflows are from supersymmetric Chern-Simons action…
The standard approaches of phenomenology of Quantum Gravity have usually explicitly violated Lorentz invariance, either in the dispersion relation or in the addition rule for momenta. We investigate whether it is possible in 3+1 dimensions to have a non local deformation that preserves fully Lorentz invariance, as it is the case in 2+1D Quantum Gravity. We answer positively to this question and show for the first time how to construct a homogeneously curved momentum space preserving the full action of the Lorentz group in dimension 4 and higher, despite relaxing locality. We study the property…
We study the Lorentz invariance of D=4 and 6 superstrings in the double-spinor formalism, which are equivalent to the D=4 and 6 superstrings in the pure-spinor formalism in the sense of the BRST cohomology. We first re-examine how the conformal and Lorentz anomalies appear in the D=4 and 6 Green-Schwarz superstrings in the semi-light-cone gauge in the framework of BRST quantization. We construct a set of BRST invariant Lorentz generators and show that they do not form a closed algebra, even cohomologically. We then turn to the construction of Lorentz generators in the D=4 and 6 double-spinor s…
Using a cohomological characterization of the consistent and the covariant Lorentz and gauge anomalies, derived from the complexification of the relevant algebras, we study in $d=2$ the definition of the Weyl determinant for a non-abelian theory with Riemannian background. We obtain two second order operators that produce, by means of $ζ$-function regularization, respectively the consistent and the covariant Lorentz and gauge anomalies, preserving diffeomorphism invariance. We compute exactly their functional determinants and the W-Z-W terms: the ``consistent'' determinant agrees with the non-…
Odd-dimensional quantum field theories (QFTs) can have nonzero trace anomalies if external fields are introduced and some ingredients needed to make Lorentz scalars with appropriate mass dimensions (or weights) are supplied. We have studied a three-dimensional QFT and explicitly computed the trace of the stress tensor using the holographic local renormalization group (RG). We have checked some properties of vector beta functions and the Wess-Zumino consistency condition, however, found the anomalies vanish on fixed points. We clarify what is responsible for the vanishing trace anomalies.
While general relativity possesses local Lorentz invariance, both canonical quantum gravity and string theory suggest that Lorentz invariance may be broken at high energies. Broken Lorentz invariance has also been postulated as an explanation for astrophysical anomalies such as the missing GZK cutoff. Therefore, we seek an effective field theory description of gravity where Lorentz invariance is broken. We will construct a candidate theory and then briefly discuss some of the implications.
Using the path integral formulation in Euclidean space, we extended the calculation of the abelian chiral anomalies in the case of Lorentz violating theories by considering a new fermionic correction term provided by the standard model extension, which arises in the continuous Hamiltonian of a weakly tilted Weyl semimetal, and whose cones have opposite tilting. We found that this anomaly is insensitive to the tilting parameter, retaining its well-known covariant form. This independence on the Lorentz violating parameters is consistent with other findings reported in the literature. The initial…
A global symmetry of a quantum field theory is said to have an 't Hooft anomaly if it cannot be promoted to a local symmetry of a gauged theory. In this paper, we show that the anomaly is also an obstruction to defining symmetric boundary conditions. This applies to Lorentz symmetries with gravitational anomalies as well. For theories with perturbative anomalies, we demonstrate the obstruction by analyzing the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions and current Ward identities in the presence of a boundary. We then recast the problem in terms of symmetry defects and find the same conclusions for an…
We discuss symmetry fractionalization of the Lorentz group in (2+1)$d$ non-spin quantum field theory (QFT), and its implications for dualities. We prove that two inequivalent non-spin QFTs are dual as spin QFTs if and only if they are related by a Lorentz symmetry fractionalization with respect to an anomalous $\mathbb{Z}_2$ one-form symmetry. Moreover, if the framing anomalies of two non-spin QFTs differ by a multiple of 8, then they are dual as spin QFTs if and only if they are also dual as non-spin QFTs. Applications to summing over the spin structures, time-reversal symmetry, and level/ran…
We show that the Implicit Regularization Technique is useful to display quantum symmetry breaking in a complete regularization independent fashion. Arbitrary parameters are expressed by finite differences between integrals of the same superficial degree of divergence whose value is fixed on physical grounds (symmetry requirements or phenomenology). We study Weyl fermions on a classical gravitational background in two dimensions and show that, assuming Lorentz symmetry, the Weyl and Einstein Ward identities reduce to a set of algebraic equations for the arbitrary parameters which allows us to s…
We extend the BMS(4) group by adding logarithmic supertranslations. This is done by relaxing the boundary conditions on the metric and its conjugate momentum at spatial infinity in order to allow logarithmic terms of carefully designed form in the asymptotic expansion, while still preserving finiteness of the action. Standard theorems of the Hamiltonian formalism are used to derive the (finite) generators of the logarithmic supertranslations. As the ordinary supertranslations, these depend on a function of the angles. Ordinary and logarithmic supertranslations are then shown to form an abelian…
In a modest attempt to present potentially new paradigms in Cosmology, including its inflationary epoch, and initiate discussions, I review in this article some novel, string-inspired cosmological models, which entail a purely geometrical origin of the Dark sector of the Universe but also of its observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. The models contain gravitational (string-model independent, Kalb-Ramond (KR)) axion fields coupled to primordial gravitational anomalies via CP-violating interactions. The anomaly terms are four-space-time-dimensional remnants of the Green-Schwarz counterterms appe…
Based on the supersymmetric quantum mechanical approach, we have systematically studied both the $U\left(1\right)$ gauge anomaly and the diffeomorphism anomaly in Weyl systems with torsion, curvature and external electromagnetic fields. These anomalies relate to the chiral current (or current) non-conservation and chiral energy-momentum (or energy-momentum) non-conservation, respectively, which can be applied to the $^{3}\text{He-A}$ phase, the chiral superconductors and the Weyl semimetals with dislocations and disclinations. In sharp difference with other anomalies, there exist torsional ano…
The $N=1$, $D=10$ Supergravity--Super--Yang--Mills (SUGRA-SYM) theory is plagued by ABBJ gauge and Lorentz anomalies which are cancelled via the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism. Due to the fact that the ABBJ anomalies are not invariant under supersymmetry (SUSY) transformations one concludes that the theory is plagued also by a SUSY anomaly. For the gauge groups $SO(32)$ and $E_8\times E_8$ we compute this SUSY anomaly, by solving a coupled cohomology problem, and we show that it can be cancelled by subtracting from the action the known Green--Schwarz counterterm, the same which c…
We construct the effective field theory for time-reversal symmetry breaking multi-Weyl semimetals (mWSMs), composed of a single pair of Weyl nodes of (anti-)monopole charge $n$, with $n=1,2,3$ in crystalline environment. From both the continuum and lattice models, we show that a mWSM with $n>1$ can be constructed by placing $n$ flavors of linearly dispersing simple Weyl fermions (with $n=1$) in a bath of an $SU(2)$ non-Abelian static background gauge field. Such an $SU(2)$ field preserves certain crystalline symmetry (four-fold rotational or $C_4$ in our construction), but breaks the Lorentz s…
