We extend the BMS(4) group by adding logarithmic supertranslations. This is done by relaxing the boundary conditions on the metric and its conjugate momentum at spatial infinity in order to allow logarithmic terms of carefully designed form in the asymptotic expansion, while still preserving finiteness of the action. Standard theorems of the Hamiltonian formalism are used to derive the (finite) generators of the logarithmic supertranslations. As the ordinary supertranslations, these depend on a function of the angles. Ordinary and logarithmic supertranslations are then shown to form an abelian subalgebra with non-vanishing central extension. Because of this central term, one can make nonlinear redefinitions of the generators of the algebra so that the pure supertranslations ($\ell >1$ in a spherical harmonic expansion) and the logarithmic supertranslations have vanishing brackets with all the Poincaré generators, and, in particular, transform in the trivial representation of the Lorentz group. The symmetry algebra is then the direct sum of the Poincaré algebra and the infinite-dimensional abelian algebra formed by the pure supertranslations and the logarithmic supertranslations (with central extension). The pure supertranslations are thus completely decoupled from the standard Poincaré algebra in the asymptotic symmetry algebra. This implies in particular that one can provide a definition of the angular momentum which is manifestly free from supertranslation ambiguities. An intermediate redefinition providing a partial decoupling of the pure and logarithmic supertranslations is also given.
We present an explicit formula for Lorentz boosts and rotations that commute with BMS supertranslations in asymptotically flat spacetimes. Key to the construction is the use of infrared regularizations and of a unitary transformation that makes observables commute with the soft degrees of freedom. We explicitly verify that our charges satisfy the Lorentz algebra and we check that they are consistent with expectations by evaluating them on the supertranslated Minkowski space and on the boosted Kerr black hole.

We derive a closed-form expression of the orbit of Minkowski spacetime under arbitrary Diff$(S^2)$ super-Lorentz transformations and supertranslations. Such vacua are labelled by the superboost, superrotation and supertranslation fields. Impulsive transitions among vacua are related to the refraction memory effect and the displacement memory effect. A phase space is defined whose asymptotic symmetry group consists of arbitrary Diff$(S^2)$ super-Lorentz transformations and supertranslations. It requires a renormalization of the symplectic structure. We show that our final surface charge express…
The extended BMS group includes supertranslation, dual supertranslation and Lorentz transformations. The generators of these symmetries can be classified according to their parity into "electric" and "magnetic" types. Using a multipole expansion of gravitational sources in the Newman-Penrose formalism, we associate each one of these charges with a particular moment. At leading order, the "electric" and "magnetic" monopole moments correspond respectively to supertranslations and dual supertranslations. At the first subleading order, the "electric" and "magnetic" dipole moments correspond respec…
We propose a definition of asymptotic flatness at timelike infinity in four spacetime dimensions. We present a detailed study of the asymptotic equations of motion and the action of supertranslations on asymptotic fields. We show that the Lee-Wald symplectic form $Ω(g, δ_1 g, δ_2 g)$ does not get contributions from future timelike infinity with our boundary conditions. As a result, the "future charges" can be computed on any two-dimensional surface surrounding the sources at timelike infinity. We present expressions for supertranslation and Lorentz charges.
Four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes at spatial infinity are defined from first principles without imposing parity conditions or restrictions on the Weyl tensor. The Einstein-Hilbert action is shown to be a correct variational principle when it is supplemented by an anomalous counter-term which breaks asymptotic translation, supertranslation and logarithmic translation invariance. Poincaré transformations as well as supertranslations and logarithmic translations are associated with finite and conserved charges which represent the asymptotic symmetry group. Lorentz charges as well as…
This is a review of selected topics from recent work on symmetry charges in asymptotically flat spacetime done by the author in collaboration with U. Kol and R. Javadinezhad. First we reinterpret the reality constraint on the boundary graviton as the gauge fixing of a new local symmetry, called dual supertranslations. This symmetry extends the BMS group and bears many similarities to the dual (magnetic) gauge symmetry of electrodynamics. We use this new gauge symmetry to propose a new description of the TAUB-NUT space that does not contain closed time-like curves. Next we summarize progress to…
We show that the asymptotic charges associated with Lorentz symmetries on past and future null infinity match in the limit to spatial infinity in a class of asymptotically-flat spacetimes. These are spacetimes that obey the Ashtekar-Hansen definition of asymptotic flatness at null and spatial infinity and satisfy an additional set of conditions which we lay out explicitly. Combined with earlier results on the matching of supertranslation charges, this shows that all Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) charges on past and future null infinity match in the limit to spatial infinity in this class of spacet…
Three-dimensional N-extended superconformal symmetry is studied within the superspace formalism. A superconformal Killing equation is derived and its solutions are classified in terms of supertranslations, dilations, Lorentz transformations, R-symmetry transformations and special superconformal transformations. Superconformal group is then identified with a supermatrix group, OSp(N|2,R), as expected from the analysis on simple Lie superalgebras. In general, due to the invariance under supertranslations and special superconformal transformations, superconformally invariant n-point functions red…
The asymptotic symmetries in Brans-Dicke theory are analyzed using Penrose's conformal completion method, which is independent of the coordinate system used. These symmetries indeed include supertranslations and Lorentz transformations for an asymptotically flat spacetime. With the Wald-Zoupas formalism, "conserved charges" and fluxes of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra are computed. The scalar degree of freedom contributes only to the Lorentz boost charge, although it plays a role in various fluxes. The flux-balance laws are further used to constrain displacement memory, spin memory and center…
A canonical realization of the BMS (Bondi-Metzner-Sachs) algebra is given on the phase space of the classical real Klein-Gordon field . By assuming the finiteness of the generators of the Poincaré group, it is shown that a countable set of conserved quantities exists (supertranslations); this set transforms under a particular Lorentz representation, which is uniquely determined by the requirement of having an invariant four-dimensional subspace, which corresponds to the Poincaré translations. This Lorentz representation is infinite-dimensional, non unitary, reducible and indecomposable. Its re…
The surface charge algebra of generic asymptotically locally (A)dS$_4$ spacetimes without matter is derived without assuming any boundary conditions. Surface charges associated with Weyl rescalings are vanishing while the boundary diffeomorphism charge algebra is non-trivially represented without central extension. The $Λ$-BMS$_4$ charge algebra is obtained after specifying a boundary foliation and a boundary measure. The existence of the flat limit requires the addition of corner terms in the action and symplectic structure that are defined from the boundary foliation and measure. The flat li…
We study anomalous dimensions of (super)conformal Wilson operators at weak and strong coupling making use of the integrability symmetry on both sides of the gauge/string correspondence and elucidate the origin of their single-logarithmic behavior for long operators/strings in the limit of large Lorentz spin. On the gauge theory side, we apply the method of the Baxter Q-operator to identify different scaling regimes in the anomalous dimensions in integrable sectors of (supersymmetric) Yang-Mills theory to one-loop order and determine the values of the Lorentz spin at which the logarithmic scali…
We show that Wess-Zumino terms for D-p branes with p>0 in the Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space are given in terms of "left-invariant" currents on the super-AdS group or the "expanded" super-AdS group. As a result there is no topological extension of the super-AdS algebra. In the flat limit the global Lorentz rotational charges of the AdS space turn out to be brane charges of the supertranslation algebra representing the BPS mass. We also show that a D-instanton is described by the GL(1) degree of freedom in the Roiban-Siegel formalism based on the GL(4|4)/[Sp(4)xGL(1)]^2 coset.
We argue that theories with ghosts may have a long lived vacuum state even if all interactions are Lorentz preserving. In space-time dimension D = 2, we consider the tree level decay rate of the vacuum into ghosts and ordinary particles mediated by non-derivative interactions, showing that this is finite and logarithmically growing in time. For D > 2, the decay rate is divergent unless we assume that the interaction between ordinary matter and the ghost sector is soft in the UV, so that it can be described in terms of non-local form factors rather than point-like vertices. We provide an exampl…
We study the problem of decoupling of heavy chiral superfields in four-dimensional $N=1$ supersymmetric field theories with Lorentz-invariant and Lorentz-violating higher-derivative terms. We demonstrate that the earlier found effect of large logarithmic quantum corrections, due to heavy chiral superfields, takes place not only if the theory possesses quantum divergences, but also for essentially finite theories involving higher derivative terms, both Lorentz-invariant and Lorentz-breaking ones.
We study the one-loop renormalization and evolution of the couplings in scalar field theories of the Lifshitz type, i.e. with different scaling in space and time. These theories are unitary and renormalizable, thanks to higher spatial derivative terms that modify the particle propagator at high energies, but at the expense of explicitly breaking Lorentz symmetry. We study if and under what conditions the Lorentz symmetry can be considered as emergent at low energies by studying the RG evolution of the ``speed of light'' coupling $c^2_ϕ$ and, for more than one field, of $δc^2\equiv c^2_{ϕ_1}-c^…
The conformal extension of the BMS$_{3}$ algebra is constructed. Apart from an infinite number of 'superdilatations,' in order to incorporate 'superspecial conformal transformations,' the commutator of the latter with supertranslations strictly requires the presence of nonlinear terms in the remaining generators. The algebra appears to be very rigid, in the sense that its central extensions as well as the nonlinear terms coefficients become determined by the central charge of the Virasoro subalgebra. The wedge algebra corresponds to the conformal group in three spacetime dimensions $SO(3,2)$, …
This paper carries on the investigation of the non-unitary su(2)_{-1/2} WZW model. An essential tool in our first work on this topic was a free-field representation, based on a c=-2 ηξghost system, and a Lorentzian boson. It turns out that there are several ``versions'' of the ηξsystem, allowing different su(2)_{-1/2} theories. This is explored here in details. In more technical terms, we consider extensions (in the c=-2 language) from the small to the large algebra representation and, in a further step, to the full symplectic fermion theory. In each case, the results are expressed in terms of…
