IRAS19410+2336 is a young massive star forming region with an intense outflow activity. We present here spatially resolved NIR spectroscopy which allows us to verify whether the H2 emission detected in this object originates from thermal emission in shock fronts or from fluorescence excitation by non-ionizing UV photons. Moreover, NIR spectroscopy also offers the possibility of studying the characteristics of the putative driving source(s) of the H2 emission by the detection of photospheric and circumstellar spectral features, and of the environmental conditions (e.g. extinction). We obtained long-slit, intermediate-resolution, NIR spectra of IRAS19410+2336 using LIRIS. As a complement, we also obtained J, H and K_s images with the Las Campanas 2.5m Du Pont Telescope, and archival mid-infrared (MIR) Spitzer images at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 um. We confirm the shocked nature of the H2 emission, with an excitation temperature of about 2000 K. We have also identified objects with very different properties and evolutionary stages in IRAS19410+2336. The most massive source at millimeter wavelengths, mm1, with a mass of a few tens of solar masses, has a bright NIR (and MIR) counterpart. This suggests that emission is leaking at these wavelengths. The second most massive millimeter source, mm2, is only detected at lambda > 6 um, suggesting that it could be a high-mass protostar still in its main accretion phase. The NIR spectra of some neighboring sources show CO first-overtone bandhead emission which is associated with neutral material located in the inner regions of the circumstellar environment of YSOs.
We report interferometric observations of the high-mass star-forming object IRAS 23033+5951. Our observations reveal two massive molecular cloud cores, designated IRAS 23033+5951-MMS1 and IRAS 23033+5951-MMS2. MMS1 has already formed a massive protostar and MMS2 appears to be on the verge of doing so. The latter core may be an example of a massive analogue to a "Class 0" star-forming object. The more evolved core shows some evidence of N2H+ destruction near the protostar, consistent with similar findings in low-mass star-forming objects. In addition to the already-known prominent HCO+ outflow,…
IRAS 21413+5442 and IRAS 21407+5441 are two massive star forming regions of high luminosity, likely associated with each other. Near-infrared photometry on these two IRAS sources was performed at UKIRT using the UFTI under excellent seeing conditions yielding an angular resolution of $\sim$ 0.5 arcsec. Our results reveal details of stellar content to a completeness limit (90%) of J = 18.5, H = 18.0, and K = 17.5 mag in the two regions. In IRAS 21413+5442, we identify a late O type star, having large (H-K) color, to be near the centre of the CO jets observed by earlier authors. The UKIRT images…
The physical conditions of the interstellar medium and stellar components in the regions of the southern Galactic star forming complexes associated with IRAS 10049-5657 and IRAS 10031-5632 have been investigated. These regions have been mapped simultaneously in two far infrared bands lambda_eff ~ 150 & 210 micron, with ~ 1' angular resolution using the TIFR 1-m balloon borne telescope. Spatial distribution of the temperature of cool dust and optical depth at 200 micron have been obtained. Using the 2MASS sources, the stellar populations of the embedded young clusters have been studied. A rich …
Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of the high-mass star-forming region IRAS 18089-1732 in the 1 mm and 850 $μ$m band with 1 GHz bandwidth reveal a wealth of information. We present the observations of 34 lines from 16 different molecular species. Most molecular line maps show significant contributions from the outflow, and only few molecules are confined to the inner core. We present and discuss the molecular line observations and outline the unique capabilities of the SMA for future imaging line surveys at high spatial resolution.
The Galactic star forming region in the southern sky, associated with IRAS 09002-4732 has been mapped simultaneously in two far infrared bands (148 & 209 um), with ~ 1' angular resolution. Fifteen sources including IRAS 08583-4719, 08589-4714, 09002-4732 and 09014-4736 have been detected, some of which are well resolved. Taking advantage of similar beams in the two bands, a reliable dust temperature [T(148/209)] map has been obtained, which detects colder dust (< 30 K) in this region. The HIRES processed IRAS maps at 12, 25, 60 & 100 um have also been used for comparison. The optical depth map…
A multiwavelength study of the star forming regions associated with IRAS 19111+1048 and IRAS 19110+1045 has been carried out. These have been simultaneously mapped in two far infrared bands at lambda_eff ~ 130 and 200 micron with ~1' angular resolution using the TIFR 1-m balloon borne telescope. The radio emission from the ionised gas of these regions has been imaged at 1280, 610 and 325 MHz using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, India. A total of 20 compact radio sources have been detected from the high resolution radio map of IRAS 19111+1048 at 1280 MHz. Assuming these sources to represe…
We present results from a study of two luminous IRAS sources thought to be young massive star-forming regions and which have no previously detected radio continuum emission: IRAS 15596-5301 and IRAS 16272-4837. Our study incorporates sensitive ATCA radio continuum data, SEST 1.2-mm continuum (using the new SIMBA bolometer) and line data, as well as data taken from the MSX database. The results show that both sources are associated with dense molecular cores which appear to host recently formed massive stars. We argue that IRAS16272 is in a very early stage of evolution, prior to the formation …
Embedded Young Stellar Objects (YSO) in dense interstellar clouds is treated self-consistently to understand their spectral energy distributions (SED). Radiative transfer calculations in spherical geometry involving the dust as well as the gas component, have been carried out to explain observations covering a wide spectral range encompassing near-infrared to radio continuum wavelengths. Various geometric and physical details of the YSOs are determined from this modelling scheme. In order to assess the effectiveness of this self-consistent scheme, three young Galactic star forming regions asso…
We present the results obtained with BeppoSAX observations of the three Composite Seyfert/star-forming galaxies: IRAS 20051-1117, IRAS 04392-0123 and IRAS 01072+4954. These sources belong to an enigmatic class of X-ray sources detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (Moran et al. 1996) which is composed of 6 low redshift galaxies. Their optical spectra are dominated by the features of HII galaxies while their X-ray luminosities (< 10^{42} ergs/s) are typical of Seyfert galaxies. IRAS 20051-1117 shows a 2-10 keV spectrum well described by a power-law with photon index = 1.9 and low intrinsic absor…
Hydrogen cyanide emission in the J=1-0 transition has been detected at redshift z=2.2858 in IRAS F10214+4724 using the Green Bank Telescope . This is the second detection of HCN emission at high redshift. The large HCN line luminosity in F10214 is similar to that in the Cloverleaf (z=2.6) and the ultra-luminous infrared galaxies Mrk231 and Arp220. This is also true of the ratio of HCN to CO luminosities. The ratio of far-infrared luminosity to HCN luminosity, an indicator of the star formation rate per solar mass of dense gas, follows the correlation found for normal spirals and infrared lumin…
Two Galactic star forming regions, one in a very early phase of evolution and another evolved one, associated with the IRAS sources 00338+6312 and 03595+5110 (RAFGL 5111) respectively have been studied in detail. These sources have been mapped simultaneously in two far infrared bands at 143 & 185 \micron), with about 1.5 arcmin angular resolution, using the TIFR 100 cm balloon borne telescope. The HIRES processed IRAS maps at 12, 25, 60 & 100 \micron, have been used for comparison. Whereas IRAS 00338+6312 is resolved only in the TIFR bands, RAFGL 5111 is very well resolved in both the TIFR ban…
I present ASCA observations of IRAS00317-2142, the most luminous (Lx~10^43 erg s-1 0.1-2 keV) of the 'composite' class of galaxies. This enigmatic class of objects presents narrow-emission line optical spectra classifying these galaxies as star-forming on the basis of the diagnostic emission line ratios; yet, the presence of weak Halpha broad wings also suggests the presence of a weak or obscured AGN. The ASCA spectrum can be represented with a power-law with a photon index of 1.76+-0.08. Strong variability is detected (by about a factor of three) between the ROSAT and ASCA 1-2 keV flux. These…
We present a multiwavelength study of the massive star forming region associated with IRAS 06055+2039 which reveals an interesting scenario of this complex where regions are at different stages of evolution of star formation. Narrow band near-infrared (NIR) observations were carried out with UKIRT-UFTI in molecular hydrogen and Br$γ$ lines to trace the shocked and ionized gases respectively. We have used 2MASS $J H K_{s}$ data to study the nature of the embedded cluster associated with IRAS 06055+2039. We obtain a power-law slope of 0.43$\pm$0.09 for the $K_{s}$-band Luminosity Function (KLF) …
SMA observations of the massive star-forming region IRAS 18089-1732 in the 1mm and 850mu band reveal outflow and disk signatures in different molecular lines. The SiO(5--4) data show a collimated outflow in the northern direction. In contrast, the HCOOCH3(20--19) line, which traces high-density gas, is confined to the very center of the region and shows a velocity gradient across the core. The HCOOCH3 velocity gradient is not exactly perpendicular to the outflow axis but between an assumed disk plane and the outflow axis. We interpret these HCOOCH3 features as originating from a rotating disk …
We have made multi-epoch VLBI observations of H2O maser emission in the massive star forming region IRAS 06061+2151 with the Japanese VLBI network (JVN) from 2005 May to 2007 October. The detected maser features are distributed within an 1\arcsec$\times$1\arcsec (2000 au$\times$2000 au at the source position) around the ultra-compact H {\small\bf II} region seen in radio continuum emission. Their bipolar morphology and expanding motion traced through their relative proper motions indicate that they are excited by an energetic bipolar outflow. Our three-dimensional model fitting has shown that …
We report the cumulative results of five surveys for water maser emission at 1.35 cm wavelength in 131 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and star-forming galaxies, conducted at the Parkes Observatory between 1993 and 1998. We detected one new maser, in the edge-on galaxy IRASF01063-8034, which exhibits a single, about 0.1 Jy spectral feature at 4282+/-6 km/s (heliocentric) with an unusually large 54+/-16 km/s half-power full width. The centroid velocity of the emission increased to 4319.6+/-0.6 km/s (38+/-2 km/s width) over the 13 days between discovery and confirmation of the detection. A similar…
We present the results of a survey of a small sample (14) of low-mass protostars (L_IR < 10^3 Lsun) for 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission performed using the ATNF Parkes radio telescope. No new masers were discovered. We find that the lower luminosity limit for maser emission is near 10^3 Lsun, by comparison of the sources in our sample with previously detected methanol maser sources. We examine the IRAS properties of our sample and compare them with sources previously observed for methanol maser emission, almost all of which satisfy the Wood & Churchwell criterion for selecting candidate UCHII …
We present a high-angular-resolution molecular line and millimeter continuum study of the massive star formation site IRAS 05358+3543. The most remarkable feature is a highly collimated (collimation factor ~10) and massive (>10 M_sun) bipolar outflow of 1 pc length, which is part of a quadrupolar outflow system. The three observed molecular outflows forming the IRAS 05358+3543 outflow system resemble, in structure and collimation, those typical of low-mass star-forming regions. They might therefore, just like low-mass outflows, be explained by shock entrainment models of jets. We estimate a ma…
We present results of multi-epoch VLBI observations with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) of the 22 GHz H$_{2}$O masers associated with a young stellar object (YSO) IRAS 22198+6336 in a dark cloud L1204G. Based on the phase-referencing VLBI astrometry, we derive an annual parallax of IRAS 22198+6336 to be 1.309$\pm$0.047 mas, corresponding to the distance of 764$\pm$27 pc from the Sun. Although the most principal error source of our astrometry is attributed to the internal structure of the maser spots, we successfully reduce the errors in the derived annual parallax by employing the…
We report sensitive ATCA radio-continuum observations toward IRAS 15596-5301 and 16272-4837, two luminous objects (> 2x10^4 Lsun) thought to represent massive star-forming regions in early stages of evolution (due to previously undetected radio emission at the 1-sigma level of 2 mJy per beam). Also reported are 1.2-millimeter continuum and a series of molecular-line observations made with the SEST telescope. For IRAS 15596-5301, the observations reveal the presence of three distinct compact radio-continuum sources associated with a dense molecular core. We suggest that this core contains a clu…
Mid and far infrared maps of many Galactic star forming regions show multiple peaks in close proximity, implying more than one embedded energy sources. With the aim of understanding such interstellar clouds better, the present study models the case of two embedded sources. A radiative transfer scheme has been developed to deal with an uniform density dust cloud in a cylindrical geometry, which includes isotropic scattering in addition to the emission and absorption processes. This scheme has been applied to the Galactic star forming region associated with IRAS 19181+1349, which shows observati…
We present infrared and radio continuum observations of S 201 star forming region. A massive star cluster is observed in this region, which contains different classes of young stellar objects. The near-infrared colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams are studied to discuss the nature of these sources. We have discovered the knots of molecular hydrogen emission at 2.122 micron in the central region of S 201. These knots are clearly seen along the diffuse emission in north-west direction which are probably the obscured Herbig-Haro objects. High sensitivity and high resolution radio continuum…
We present medium-resolution 3 um spectroscopy of the carbon-rich proto-planetary nebula IRAS 22272+5435. Spectroscopy with the Subaru Telescope adaptive optics system revealed a spatial variation of hydrocarbon molecules and dust surrounding the star. The ro-vibrational bands of acetylene (C2H2) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) at 3.0 um are evident in the central star spectra. The molecules are concentrated in the compact region near the center. The 3.3 and 3.4 um emission of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons is detected at 600--1300 AU from the central star. The separation of spatial distributi…
Aims: We have carried out an infrared study of the southern Galactic massive star forming region associated with IRAS 14416-5937. Methods: This star forming region has been mapped simultaneously in two far infrared bands at ~ 150 & 210 micron using the TIFR 1-m balloon borne telescope with ~ 1' angular resolution. We have used 2MASS JHK$_s$ as well as Spitzer-GLIMPSE data of this region to study the stellar populations of the embedded young cluster. This region comprises of two sources, designated as A & B and separated by ~ 2 pc. The spectrum of a region located close to the source A obtained…
PdBI high-spatial resolution CO observations combined with near-infrared H2 data disentangle at least 7 (maybe even 9) molecular outflows in the massive star-forming region IRAS19410+2336. Position-velocity diagrams of the outflows reveal Hubble-like relationships similar to outflows driven by low-mass objects. Estimated accretion rates are of the order 10^-4 Msun/yr, sufficiently high to overcome the radiation pressure and form massive stars via disk-mediated accretion processes. The single-dish large-scale mm continuum cores fragment into several compact condensations at the higher spatial r…
Submillimeter Array 1.3mm line and continuum observations toward the young massive star-forming region IRAS18182-1433 are presented. The data are complemented with short-spacing CO(2-1) observations and SiO(1-0) data from the VLA. Multiple massive outflows emanate from the mm continuum peak. The CO(2-1) data reveal a quadrupolar outflow system consisting of two outflows inclined by \~90 degrees. One outflow exhibits a cone-like red-shifted morphology with a jet-like blue-shifted counterpart where a blue counter-cone can only be tentatively identified. The SiO(1-0) data suggest the presence of …
We present a study of the three ultraluminous infrared galaxies IRAS14348-1447, IRAS19254-7245, and IRAS23128-5919, based on mid-infrared (MIR) spectro-imaging (5-18microns) observations performed with ISOCAM. We find that the MIR emission from each system, which consists of a pair of interacting late type galaxies, is principally confined to the nuclear regions with diameters of 1-2kpc and can account for more than 95% of their IRAS 12micron flux. In each interacting system, the galaxy hosting an active galactic nucleus (AGN) dominates the total spectrum and shows stronger dust continuum (12-…
(Abridged) We analyse the morphology, kinematics and ionization structure of the extended emission-line regions in four ULIRGs at 0.118<z<0.181, using ARGUS integral-field spectroscopy. The gas kinematics in the hyperluminous system IRAS F20460+1925 lack coherent structure, with FWHM>1000 km/s within 1" of the nucleus; an isolated blob ~8kpc from the nucleus with a much lower FWHM may lie in a photoionization cone. Line ratios suggest AGN-photoionization for the systemic gas, and shock+precursor ionization for a second, spatially-unresolved, nuclear component blueshifted by 990 km/s. The gas i…
In the course of a comprehensive mm/submm survey of massive star-forming regions, the vicinities of a sample of 47 luminous IRAS sources were closely investigated with SCUBA and IRAM bolometers in order to search for massive protostellar candidates. A particularly interesting object has been found in the surroundings of the bright FIR source IRAS 07029-1215. Follow-up line observations show that the object is cold, that it has a massive envelope, and that it is associated with an energetic molecular outflow. No infrared point source has been detected at its position. Therefore, it is a very go…
We report the first results of an ongoing survey at 22 GHz with the 100-m Effelsberg telescope to search for water maser emission in bright IRAS sources. We have detected water vapor emission in IC 342. The maser, associated with a star forming region ~10-15 arcsec west of the nucleus, consists of a single 0.5 km/s wide feature and reaches an isotropic luminosity of 0.01 L(sun) (D = 1.8 Mpc). Our detection raises the detection rate among northern galaxies with IRAS point source fluxes S(100micron) > 50 Jy to 16%.
We have observed the massive star forming region, IRAS 18507+0121, at millimeter wavelengths in 3 mm continuum emission and H13CO+(J=1-0) and SiO(v=0, J=2-1) line emission, and at near-infrared wavelengths between 1.2 and 2.1 microns. Two compact molecular cores are detected: one north and one south separated by about 40". The northern molecular core contains a newly discovered, deeply embedded, B2 protostar surrounded by several hundred solar masses of warm gas and dust, G34.4+0.23 MM. Based on the presence of warm dust emission and the lack of detection at near-infrared wavelengths, we sugge…
The NGC 1333 IRAS 4 region was observed in the 22 GHz H2O maser line with an angular resolution of about 0.08 arcseconds. Two groups of masers were detected, one near IRAS 4A and the other near BI. Among the eight maser spots detected near IRAS 4A, six spots are located close to A2, within 100 AU, and the maser velocities are also near the systemic velocity of the cloud core. These masers are probably related with the circumstellar disk. Since there is no maser spot detected around A1, the star forming process is relatively more active in A2 than in A1. Four maser spots were detected near IRAS…
Near-infrared spectroscopy using the new Palomar Integral Field Spectrograph indicates the presence of an AGN (active galactic nucleus) in the ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 08311-2459. The high-velocity wings of the Paschen-alpha hydrogen recombination line are seen to be spatially unresolved, and with no positional offset between red and blue high velocity emission. The [Si VI] coronal line, with a 167 eV excitation potential, is also spatially unresolved with a velocity width comparable to that of the broad component of the Pa-alpha emission. The low velocity component of the Pa-alpha e…
We present 3 um spectroscopy of the carbon-rich proto-planetary nebulae IRAS 04296+3429 and IRAS 05341+0852 conducted with the adaptive optics system at the Subaru Telescope. We utilize the nearly diffraction-limited spectroscopy to probe the spatial extent of the hydrocarbon dust emitting zone. We find a hydrocarbon emission core extending up to 100--160 mas from the center of IRAS 04296+3429, corresponding to a physical diameter of 400--640 AU, assuming a distance of 4 kpc. On the other hand, we find that IRAS 05341+0852 is not spatially resolved with this instrumentation. The physical exten…
We present radio continuum observations at 7 mm made using the Very Large Array towards three massive star forming regions thought to be in very early stages of evolution selected from the sample of Sridharan et al. (2002). Emission was detected towards all three sources (IRAS 18470-0044, IRAS 19217+1651 and IRAS 23151+5912). We find that in all cases the 7 mm emission corresponds to thermal emission from ionized gas. The regions of ionized gas associated with IRAS 19217+1651 and IRAS 23151+5912 are hypercompact with diameters of 0.009 and 0.0006 pc, and emission measures of 7.0 x 10^8 and 2.3…
We present a multiwavelength study of the ultra compact HII region associated with IRAS 20178+4046. This enables us to probe the different components associated with this massive star forming region. The radio emission from the ionized gas was mapped at 610 and 1280 MHz using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), India. We have used 2MASS $J H K_{s}$ data to study the nature of the embedded sources associated with IRAS 20178+4046. Submillimetre emission from the cold dust at 450 and 850 $μ$m was studied using JCMT-SCUBA. The high-resolution radio continuum maps at 610 and 1280 MHz displa…
High angular resolution far-infrared observations at 143 & 185 \micron, using the TIFR 1-m balloon borne telescope, are presented for two Galactic star forming complexes associated with IRAS 00494+5617 and 05327-0457. The latter map also reveals the cold dust in OMC-3. The HIRES processed IRAS maps at 12, 25, 60 & 100 micron have also been presented for comparison. Both these regions are illuminated at the edges by high mass stars with substantial UV flux. The present study is aimed at quantifying the role of the nearby stars vis-a-vis embedded young stellar objects in the overall heating of th…
We present observations of 1.2-mm dust continuum emission, made with the Swedish ESO Submillimeter Telescope, towards eighteen luminous IRAS point sources, all with colors typical of compact HII regions and associated with CS(2-1) emission, thought to be representative of young massive star forming regions. Emission was detected toward all the IRAS objects. We find that the 1.2-mm sources associated with them have distinct physical parameters, namely sizes of 0.4 pc, dust temperatures of 30 K, masses of 2x10^3 Msun, column densities of 3x10^23 cm^-2, and densities of 4x10^5 cm^-3. We refer to …
We have created new dust temperature and column density maps of Perseus, Ophiuchus and Serpens using 60 and 100 micron data from the IRIS recalibration of IRAS data. We describe an optimized method for finding the dust temperature, emissivity spectral index, and optical depth using optical and NIR extinction maps. The creation of these temperature and extinction maps (covering tens of square degrees of molecular clouds) is one of the first results from the ongoing COordinated Molecular Probe Line Extinction Thermal Emission (COMPLETE) Survey of Star Forming regions. However, while the extincti…
We present results of VLBI observations of the water masers associated with IRAS 4A and IRAS 4B in the NGC 1333 star-forming region taken in four epochs over a two month period. Both objects have been classified as extremely young sources and each source is known to be a multiple system. Using the Very Long Baseline Array, we detected 35 masers in Epoch I, 40 masers in Epoch II, 35 in Epoch III, and 24 in Epoch IV. Only one identified source in each system associates with these masers. These data are used to calculate proper motions for the masers and trace the jet outflows within 100 AU of IR…
IRAS 06562-0337 has been the recent subject of a classic debate: proto-planetary nebula or young stellar object? We present the first 2 micron image of IRAS 06562-0337, which reveals an extended diffuse nebula containing approximately 70 stars inside a 30 arcsec radius around a bright, possibly resolved, central object. The derived stellar luminosity function is consistent with that expected from a single coeval population, and the brightness of the nebulosity is consistent with the predicted flux of unresolved low-mass stars. The stars and nebulosity are spatially coincident with strong CO li…
We present observations of continuum and molecular lines towards the protostar candidates IRAS 21307+5049 and IRAS 22172+5549. Single-dish maps in the 12CO(2--1), C18O(2--1), HCO+(1--0) lines and sub-mm continuum are compared with interferometric maps in the 12CO(1--0) line and 3 mm continuum, and with mid- and near-infrared images. A plausible interpretation of our data based on the continuum maps and spectral energy distributions is that two components are present: a compact molecular core, responsible for the continuum emission at wavelengths longer than ~25 \mum, and a cluster of stars loc…
Three Galactic star forming regions associated with W3(OH), S209 and S187 have been simultaneously mapped in two trans-IRAS far infrared (FIR) bands centered at ~ 140 and 200 micron using the TIFR 100 cm balloon borne FIR telescope. These maps show extended FIR emission with structures. The HIRES processed IRAS maps of these regions at 12, 25, 60 & 100 micron have also been presented for comparison. Point-like sources have been extracted from the longest waveband TIFR maps and searched for associations in the other five bands. The diffuse emission from these regions have been quantified, which…
We are searching for Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) near the boundary between protostars and pre-main sequence objects, what we have termed transitional YSOs. We have identified a sample of 125 objects as candidate transitional YSOs on the basis of IRAS colors and optical appearance on DSS images. We find that the majority of our objects are associated with star-forming regions, confirming our expectation that the bulk of these are YSOs. We present optical, near-IR and high-resolution IRAS images of 92 objects accessible from the northern and 62 from the southern hemisphere. The objects have bee…
We have made a serendipitous discovery of an enigmatic outflow source, IRAS 05506+2414 (hereafter IRAS 05506), as part of a multi-wavelength survey of pre-planetary nebulae (PPNs). The HST optical and near-infrared images show a bright compact central source with a jet-like extension, and a fan-like spray of high-velocity (with radial velocities upto 350 kms/s) elongated knots which appear to emanate from it. These structures are possibly analogous to the near-IR "bullets" seen in the Orion nebula. Interferometric observations at 2.6 mm show the presence of a high-velocity CO outflow and a con…
We present high angular resolution observations toward two massive star forming regions IRAS 18264-1152 and IRAS 23151+5912 with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) in the SiO (J=2-1) and H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ (J=1-0) lines and at 1.3 mm and 3.4 mm continuum, and with the Very Large Array (VLA) in the NH$_3$ (J,K)=(1,1), (2,2) lines. The NH$_3$ (1,1) and (2,2) emission is detected toward IRAS 18264-1152 only. For IRAS 18264-1152, the SiO observations reveal at least two quasi-perpendicular outflows with high collimation factors, and the most dominant feature is a redshifted jet-like outflow w…
We present detailed gas-phase chemical models for the envelope of the low-mass star-forming region IRAS 16293-2422. By considering both time- and space-dependent chemistry, these models are used to study both the physical structure proposed by Schoier et al. (2002), as well as the chemical evolution of this region. A new feature of our study is the use of a detailed, self-consistent radiative transfer model to translate the model abundances into line strengths and compare them directly with observations of a total of 76 transitions for 18 chemical species, and their isotopes. The model can rep…
We present the results of observations of cold IRAS sources in the Galactic disk area, -10 < l < 100 and |b|<5, in the SiO J=1-0, v=1 and 2 maser lines. SiO masers were detected in 51 out of 143 observed sources; 45 were new detections in SiO masers. The selected IRAS sources were objects with dust temperatures of between 160 and 280 K. According to a confirmation using 2MASS near-infrared images, a majority of the sample are AGB or post-AGB stars, although dense cores in the star-forming regions (or dusty HII regions) are involved in part of the sample. Among new detections, two were candidat…
We have carried out a molecular line survey of the candidate massive protostar IRAS 23385+6053, covering a 27.2 GHz frequency range in the 330--360 GHz atmospheric window. We detected 27 lines originating from a total of 11 species.Over a third of the identified molecular lines are from the asymmetric top molecule methanol (CH$_{3}$OH). We did not detect any emission from high-excitation lines or typical hot core tracers (e.g. CH$_{3}$CN, HCOOCH$_{3}$). We derive a rotation temperature and column density from the methanol emission and estimate lower limits to the beam-averaged column density o…
We report a result of an interferometric observation toward an SiO maser source, IRAS 19312+1950, in the HCO+ J=1-0 line with the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland-Association (BIMA) Millimeter Array. In the spatially integrated spectrum of HCO+, two kinematic components were seen: a strong line with a narrow width (~2 km/s, narrow component), and a weak symmetric line with a broad width (~60 km/s, broad component). The line profile of HCO+ are reminiscent of that of CO. In the integrated intensity map, we found a pronounced bipolar shape consisting of lower-velocity parts of the broad component. The…
We analyze the embedded stellar content in the vicinity of the W3/W4/W5 HII regions using the FCRAO Outer Galaxy 12CO(J=1-0) Survey, the IRAS Point Source Catalog, published radio continuum surveys, and new near-infrared and molecular line observations. Thirty-four IRAS Point Sources are identified that have far-infrared colors characteristic of embedded star forming regions, and we have obtained K' mosaics and 13CO(J=1-0) maps for 32 of them. Ten of the IRAS sources are associated with an OB star and 19 with a stellar cluster, although three OB stars are not identified with a cluster. Half of…
The IRAS source 03256+3055 in the NGC 1333 star forming region is associated with extended sub-millimeter emission of complex morphology, showing multiple clumps. One of these is found to coincide with the driving source of a bipolar jet of S-shaped morphology seen in the emission lines of H_alpha and [SII] as well as in the H2 emission lines in the K-band. Detailed images of the driving source at the wavelengths of H_alpha and [SII] and in the I, J, H, and K bands as well as a K-band spectrum and polarimetry are discussed. The near-infrared morphology is characterized by a combination of line…
New AAT near-infrared and SEST 12CO J=2-1 observations are combined with existing ISO mid-infrared and ATCA cm radio continuum observations to examine the protostellar content of the Bok globule BHR 71. Together with observations of Herbig-Haro objects, these data show: (1) Two protostellar sources, IRS1 and IRS2, with a separation of ~17 arcsec (3400 AU) are located within BHR 71. (2) Each protostar is driving its own molecular outflow. The outflow from IRS1 is much larger in extent, is more massive, and dominates the CO emission. (3) Both protostars are associated with Herbig-Haro objects an…
We present an overview of data available for the Ophiuchus and Perseus molecular clouds from ``Phase I'' of the COMPLETE Survey of Star-Forming Regions. This survey provides a range of data complementary to the Spitzer Legacy Program ``From Molecular Cores to Planet Forming Disks.'' Phase I includes: Extinction maps derived from 2MASS near-infrared data using the NICER algorithm; extinction and temperature maps derived from IRAS 60 and 100um emission; HI maps of atomic gas; 12CO and 13CO maps of molecular gas; and submillimetre continuum images of emission from dust in dense cores. Not unexpec…
We present Very Large Array observations at 1.3 cm of several water maser detections obtained by previous single-dish studies of Bok globules in the Clemens & Barvainis (1988; CB) catalog. We report water maser emission in CB 3 (CB3-mm), CB 54 (IRAS 07020-1618), CB 101 (IRAS 17503-0833), and CB 232 (IRAS 21352+4307), and non-detection towards CB 65 (IRAS 16277-2332) and CB 205 (IRAS 19433+2743). These are the first reported interferometric observations of water masers in Bok globules of the CB catalog. We also present single-dish observations of millimeter and centimeter spectral lines towards…
We present the results of millimeter and centimeter continuum observations, made with the IRAM 30m telescope and the VLA, toward a sample of 11 luminous IRAS sources classified as high-mass protostellar object candidates. We find 1.2 mm emission for all (but one) regions likely tracing the dust core in which the massive young stellar object is forming, for which we estimate masses ranging from 10 to 140 Msun. For all the sources, but one, we detect centimeter emission associated with the IRAS source, being compact or ultracompact HII region candidates, with early B-type stars as ionizing stars…
The young massive star-forming region IRAS05358+3543 was observed at high-spatial resolution in the continuum emission at 3.1 and 1.2mm with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, and at 875 and 438mum with the Submillimeter Array. We resolve at least four continuum sub-sources that are likely of protostellar nature. Two of them are potentially part of a proto-binary system with a projected separation of 1700AU. Additional (sub)mm continuum peaks are not necessarily harboring protostars but maybe caused by the multiple molecular outflows. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the sub-source…
We present molecular line observations of the massive star forming region IRAS 17233-3606 aimed at studying the molecular core associated with the source. The observations were made using the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment telescope in the CO (3-2) and HCO^+ (4-3) transitions, and in the CH_3OH (6_K-5_K), (7_K-6_K) and CH_3CN (16_K-15_K) bands. For the CO(3-2) and HCO^+ (4-3) transitions, we obtained maps with a size of 70''\times 70''. The typical angular resolution of the data is ~18''. Our observations reveal an exceptionally rich molecular spectrum, a signpost of hot core activity. Comparis…
IRAS04325+2402C is a low luminosity object located near a protostar in Taurus. We present new spatially-resolved mm observations, near-infrared spectroscopy, and Spitzer photometry that improve the constraints on the nature of this source. The object is clearly detected in our 1.3 mm interferometry map, allowing us to estimate the mass in a localized disk+envelope around it to be in the range of 0.001 to 0.01Ms. Thus IRAS04325C is unlikely to accrete significantly more mass. The near-infrared spectrum cannot be explained with an extincted photosphere alone, but is consistent with a 0.03-0.1Ms …
