IRAS04325+2402C is a low luminosity object located near a protostar in Taurus. We present new spatially-resolved mm observations, near-infrared spectroscopy, and Spitzer photometry that improve the constraints on the nature of this source. The object is clearly detected in our 1.3 mm interferometry map, allowing us to estimate the mass in a localized disk+envelope around it to be in the range of 0.001 to 0.01Ms. Thus IRAS04325C is unlikely to accrete significantly more mass. The near-infrared spectrum cannot be explained with an extincted photosphere alone, but is consistent with a 0.03-0.1Ms central source plus moderate veiling, seen in scattered light, confirming the edge-on nature of the disk. Based on K-band flux and spectral slope we conclude that a central object mass >~0.1Ms is unlikely. Our comparison of the full spectral energy distribution, including new Spitzer photometry, with radiative transfer models confirms the high inclination of the disk (>~80deg), the very low mass of the central source, and the small amount of circumstellar material. IRAS04325C is one of the lowest mass objects with a resolved edge-on disk known to date, possibly a young brown dwarf, and a likely wide companion to a more massive star. With these combined properties, it represents a unique case to study the formation and early evolution of very low mass objects.
We have measured Lick index equivalent widths to derive luminosity weighted stellar ages and metallicities for thin and thick disk dominated regions of 9 edge-on disk galaxies with the ARC 3.5 meter telescope at Apache Point Observatory. In all cases, the thick disks are confirmed to be old stellar populations, with typical ages between 4 and 10 Gyr. The thin disks are uniformly younger than the thick disks, and show strong radial age gradients, with the outer regions of the disks being younger than 1 Gyr. We do not detect any significant metallicity differences or alpha-element enhancement in…
The formation and evolution of disk-dominated galaxies is difficult to explain, yet these objects exist. We therefore embarked on a study aimed at a better understanding of these enigmatic objects. We used data from the SDSS DR1 in order to identify edge-on galaxies with disks in a uniform, reproducible, automated fashion. We identified 3169 edge-on disk galaxies, which we subdivided into disk galaxies with bulge, intermediate types, and simple disk galaxies without any obvious bulge component. We subdivided these types further into subclasses: Sa(f), Sb(f), Sc(f), Scd(f), Sd(f), Irr(f), where…
We investigate gap formation in gaseous protostellar disks by a planet in a circular orbit in the limit of low disk viscosity. This regime may be appropriate to an aging disk after the epoch of planet formation. We find that the distance of planet to the gap outer boundary can be between the location of the $m=2$ and $m=1$ outer Lindblad resonances. This distance is weakly dependent upon both the planet's mass and disk viscosity. We find that the evolution of the disk edge takes place on two timescales. The first timescale is set by the spiral density waves driven by the planet. The second tim…
The structure of the inner edge of the accretion disk around a black hole can be altered, if the matter inside the marginally stable orbit is magnetically connected to the disk. In this case, a non-zero torque is exerted on its inner edge, and the accretion efficiency $ε$ can be much higher than that in the standard accretion disk model. We explore the radiation properties of an accretion disk at its sonic point around a black hole with a time-steady torque exerted on the inner edge of the disk. The local structure of the accretion flow at the sonic point is investigated in the frame of genera…
What is meant by the "inner edge" of an accretion disk around a black hole depends on the property that defines the edge. We discuss four such definitions using data from recent high-resolution numerical simulations. These are: the "turbulence edge", where flux-freezing becomes more important than turbulence in determining the magnetic field structure; the "stress edge", where plunging matter loses dynamical contact with the outer accretion flow; the "reflection edge", the smallest radius capable of producing significant X-ray reflection features; and the "radiation edge", the innermost place …
In this paper we report a new method for determining the thickness of the non-edge-on disk galaxies. Our method is based on the observation comparing with the theoretical researches of the distribution of the vertical velocity dispersion, which is obtained from the solutions of three dimensional Poisson's equation and the galactic dynamical equation. This method also allows us to investigate the mass-to-light ratio of the disk. As examples, the thickness and mass-to-light ratio of two disk galaxies, NGC 1566 and NGC 5247, which have been extensively studied in spectroscopy, have been calculate…
We report the discovery of a nearly edge-on disk about the A0 star HD 32297 seen in light scattered by the disk grains revealed in NICMOS PSF-subtracted coronagraphic images. The disk extends to a distance of at least 400 AU (3.3") along its major axis with a 1.1 micron flux density of 4.81 +/-0.57 mJy beyond a radius of 0.3" from the coronagraphically occulted star. The fraction of 1.1 micron starlight scattered by the disk, 0.0033 +/- 0.0004, is comparable to its fractional excess emission at 25 + 60 micron of ~ 0.0027 as measured from IRAS data. The disk appears to be inclined 10.5 degrees …
We calculate the amplitude of the Lyman discontinuity for an accretion disk around a maximally rotating black hole. The locally emitted disk spectrum is computed with a previously developed numerical model (Sincell and Krolik 1998) and then a new general relativistic ray-tracing code is used to determine the observed spectra as a function of inclination angle, theta_o. We find that Lyman discontinuities are undetectable for disks viewed at inclinations cos(theta_o) < 0.8, but a significant feature remains for disks seen face-on.
Observations of the rho Ophiuchi star forming region with VLT ANTU and ISAAC under 0.35" seeing conditions reveal two bipolar reflection nebulosities intersected by central dust lanes. The sources (OphE-MM3 and CRBR 2422.8-3423) can be identified as spatially resolved circumstellar disks viewed close to edge-on, similar to edge-on disk sources discovered previously in the Taurus and Orion star forming regions. Millimeter continuum fluxes yield disk masses of the order of 0.01 Mo, i.e. about the mass deemed necessary for the minimum solar nebula. Follow-up spectroscopic observations with SUBARU…
The relationship between the geometrical properties of stellar disks (a flatness and truncation radius) and the disk kinematics are considered for edge-on galaxies. It is shown that the observed thickness of the disks and the approximate constancy of their thickness along the radius well agrees with the condition of their marginal local gravitational stability. As a consequence, those galaxies whose disks are thinner should harbor more massive dark haloes. The correlation between the de-projeced central brightness of the disks and their flatness is found (the low surface brightness disks tend …
We present deep Spitzer-IRS low-resolution (lambda/Delta lambda ~ 100) 5-35 micron spectroscopy of the edge-on disk ``the Flying Saucer'' (2MASS J16281370-2431391) in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. The spectral energy distribution exhibits the characteristic two-peak shape predicted for a circumstellar disk viewed very close to edge-on. The short-wavelength peak is entirely due to photons scattered off the surface of the disk, while the long-wavelength peak is due to thermal emission from the disk itself. The Spitzer spectrum represents the first spectroscopic detection of scattered light out …
We investigate the apparent discrepancy between gas and dust outer radii derived from millimeter observations of protoplanetary disks. Using 230 and 345 GHz continuum and CO J=3-2 data from the Submillimeter Array for four nearby disk systems (HD 163296, TW Hydrae, GM Aurigae, and MWC 480), we examine models of circumstellar disk structure and the effects of their treatment of the outer disk edge. We show that for these disks, models described by power laws in surface density and temperature that are truncated at an outer radius are incapable of reproducing both the gas and dust emission simul…
We have discovered an optically thick, edge-on circumstellar disk around a Herbig Ae star in the binary system PDS 144, providing the first intermediate-mass analog of HK Tau and similar T Tauris. This system consists of a V ~ 13 mag. primary and a fainter companion, with spectra of both stars showing evidence for circumstellar disks and accretion; both stars were classified as Herbig Aes by the Pico dos Dias survey. In Lick adaptive optics polarimetry, we resolved extended polarized light scattered from dust around the northern star. Followup Keck adaptive optics and mid-infrared observations…
Edge-on spiral galaxies often have stellar disks with relatively sharp truncations and warped HI-layers in the outer parts. Warps appear to start preferentially near the optical boundaries of the disks. Here we make a comparative study of warps and truncations in edge-on galaxies. The Garc\'ıa-Ruiz et al. (2002) sample with extensive HI-mapping is complemented with luminosity distributions from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The method to identify truncations has been tested using the sample of edge-on galaxies of van der Kruit & Searle. Results are: (i.) The majority (17 out of 23) of the gala…
We present the first high angular resolution 1.4mm and 2.7mm continuum maps of the T Tauri binary system HK Tau obtained with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer. The contributions of both components are well disentangled at 1.4mm and the star previously known to host an edge-on circumstellar disk, HK Tau B, is elongated along the disk's major axis. The optically bright primary dominates the thermal emission from the system at both wavelengths, confirming that it also has its own circumstellar disk. Its non-detection in scattered light images indicates that the two disks in this binary system a…
We present spectroscopic observations of the stellar motions in the disk of the superthin edge-on spiral galaxy IC 5249 and re-analyse synthesis observations of the HI. We find that the HI rotation curve rises initially to about 90-100 km/s, but contrary to the conclusion of Abe et al. (1999) flattens well before the edge of the optical disk. Over most part of the optical disk we have been able to establish that the (tangential) stellar velocity dispersion is 25-30 km/s. From earlier surface photometry we adopt a value for the radial scalelength of the disk of 7 +/- 1 kpc, a vertical scaleheig…
Edge-on spiral galaxies offer a unique perspective on disks. One can accurately determine the height distribution of stars and ISM and the line-of-sight integration allows for the study of faint structures. The Spitzer IRAC camera is an ideal instrument to study both the ISM and stellar structure in nearby galaxies; two of its channels trace the old stellar disk with little extinction and the 8 micron channel is dominated by the smallest dust grains (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, PAHs). Dalcanton et al. (2004) probed the link between the appearance of dust lanes and the disk stability. In …
Near-infrared and optical imaging of HD32297 indicate that it has an edge-on debris disk, similar to beta Pic. I present high resolution optical spectra of the NaI doublet toward HD32297 and stars in close angular proximity. A circumstellar absorption component is clearly observed toward HD32297 at the stellar radial velocity, which is not observed toward any of its neighbors, including the nearest only 0.9 arcmin away. An interstellar component is detected in all stars >90 pc, including HD32297, likely due to the interstellar material at the boundary of the Local Bubble. Radial velocity measu…
For the past twenty-five years, nearly all analyses of accretion disk dynamics have assumed that stress inside the disk is locally proportional to pressure (the "alpha-model") and that this stress goes to zero at the marginally stable orbit. Recently, it has been demonstrated that MHD turbulence accounts for the bulk of internal disk stress. In contradiction with the traditional view, the stress from this MHD turbulence does not diminish near the marginally stable orbit, and the ratio of magnetic stress to pressure rises sharply there. Examples of the consequences include: an increase in accre…
We analyze the J, H, and Ks 2MASS images of 140 late-type edge-on galaxies selected from the RFGC catalog (which contains flat galaxies with major-to-minor axis ratio a/b > 7). The NIR scalelengths (h) and scaleheights (z0) of the stellar disks are determined for all selected galaxies. The mean relative ratios of the scaleheights of their stellar disks are 1.00:0.91:0.86 in J:H:Ks bands, respectively. We infer that the scaleheight determined from the Ks-band images is, on average, 13% larger than the extinction-free scaleheight. This difference is much larger if the scaleheights were found fro…
We present Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet and optical STIS spectroscopy of the [WCL] planetary nebula central star CPD-568032, obtained during its latest lightcurve minimum. The UV spectrum shows the central star's continuum light distribution to be split into two bright peaks separated by 0.10 arcsec. We interpret this finding as due to an edge-on disk or torus structure that obscures direct light from the star, which is seen primarily via its light scattered from the disk's rims or lobes. CPD-568032 is an archetype of dual dust chemistry [WCL] planetary nebulae, which exhibit strong infr…

We analyze the global structure of 34 late-type, edge-on, undisturbed, disk galaxies spanning a wide range of mass. We measure structural parameters for the galaxies using two-dimensional least-squares fitting to our $R$-band photometry. The fits require both a thick and a thin disk to adequately fit the data. The thick disks have larger scale heights and longer scale lengths than the embedded thin disks, by factors of ~2 and ~1.25, respectively. The observed structural parameters agree well with the properties of thick and thin disks derived from star counts in the Milky Way and from resolved…
Our understanding of the dynamical processes which control the structure and evolution of the interaction region between an accretion disk and the central star is reviewed. If the central star is unmagnetized, this interaction is in the form of a classical boundary layer. However, if the central star is strongly magnetized, it is expected that the inner disk is truncated by the stellar field, and the accretion flow follows the stellar field lines to the magnetic poles. Several outstanding questions remain regarding this picture. It is likely that numerical MHD simulations will prove essential …
We report the discovery of a spatially-resolved edge-on protoplanetary disk in the ~2-Myr-old MBM 12 young association. Our near-infrared images of LkHa 263C (MBM 12A 3C), obtained with the Hokupa'a adaptive optics system on the Gemini North telescope, clearly show two elongated reflection nebulosities separated by a dark lane, a morphology well-matched by scattered light models of an optically thick (at near-infrared wavelengths) edge-on disk. An optical spectrum of the scattered light nebulosity obtained with the Keck II telescope exhibits a spectral type of M0 +/- 0.5 (T_eff = 3850 +/- 100 …
Edge on systems reveal the properties of disk galaxies as a function of height, z, above the plane. Four local edge-on galaxies, that are close enough to have been resolved into stars by the Hubble Space Telescope, show thick disks, composed of a red stellar population, which is old and relatively metal rich. Color gradients, d(V-I)/dz, are zero or slightly positive. Favored models may have an explicit thick disk formation phase.
We present 5.2-37.2 micron spectroscopy of the edge-on circumstellar disk CRBR 2422.8-3423 obtained using the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) of the Spitzer Space Telescope. The IRS spectrum is combined with ground-based 3-5 micron spectroscopy to obtain a complete inventory of solid state material present along the line of sight toward the source. We model the object with a 2D axisymmetric (effectively 3D) Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. It is found that the model disk, assuming a standard flaring structure, is too warm to contain the very large observed column density of pure CO ice, but is…
We report the detection of a thick disk in the edge-on, low surface brightness (LSB), late-type spiral ESO 342-G017, based on ultra-deep images in the V and R bands obtained with the VLT Test Camera during Science Verification on UT1. All steps in the reduction procedure are fully described, which, together with an extensive analysis of systematic and statistic uncertainties, has resulted in surface brightness photometry that is reliable for the detection of faint extended structure to a level of V = 27.5 and R = 28.5 mag/square arcsec. The faint light apparent in these deep images is well-mod…
Photometric parameters of stellar disks and bulges for several edge-on galaxies from the Catalog of Flat Galaxies (FGC) were determined. We discuss a difference between photometric parameters of LSB and HSB galaxies from our sample. Also we present results of R CCD photometry of edge-on galaxy RFGC 3647. Deprojecting this galaxy we show that it has thin LSB disk (central surface brightness $22^m.2$ in R) and high ratio of radial to vertical scale lengths. It is shown that initially gaseous disk of the galaxy was unstable and its velocity dispersion was low. Stellar disk of this LSB galaxy was …
Optical/UV radiation from accretion disks in quasars is likely to be partly scattered by a hot plasma enveloping the disk. We investigate whether the scattering may produce the steep rises in polarization observed blueward of the Lyman limit in some quasars. We suggest and assess two models. In the first model, primary disk radiation with a Lyman edge in absorption passes through a static ionized "skin" covering the disk, which has a temperature about 3 keV and a Thomson optical depth about unity. Electron scattering in the skin smears out the edge and produces a steep rise in polarization at …
We present a statistical analysis of halo emission for a sample of 1047 edge-on disk galaxies imaged in five bands by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Stacking the homogeneously rescaled images of the galaxies, we can measure surface brightnesses as deep as mu_r~31 mag/arcsec^2. The results strongly support the almost ubiquitous presence of stellar halos around disk galaxies, whose spatial distribution is well described by a power-law $ρ\propto r^{-3}$, in a moderately flattened spheroid (c/a~0.6). The colour estimates in g-r and r-i, although uncertain, give a clear indication for extreme…
We present detailed three-dimensional modelling of the stellar luminosity distribution for the disks of 31 relatively nearby (<= 110 Mpc) edge-on spiral galaxies. In contrast to most of the standard methods available in the literature we take into account the full three-dimensional information of the disk. We minimize the difference between the observed 2D-image and an image of our 3D-disk model integrated along the line of sight. Thereby we specify the inclination, the fitting function for the z-distribution of the disk, and the best values for the structural parameters such as scalelength, s…
(abridged) We present an analysis of B-R and R-K_s color maps for 47 late-type, edge-on, unwarped, bulgeless disk galaxies spanning a wide range of mass. The color maps show that the thin disks of these galaxies are embedded within a low surface brightness red envelope that is substantially thicker than the thin disk (a/b~4:1 vs a/b>8:1), extends to at least 5 vertical disk scale heights above the galaxy midplane, and has a radial scale length that appears to be uncorrelated with that of the embedded thin disk. The color of the red envelope is similar from galaxy to galaxy and is consistent wi…
We investigate the implications of a very thick (scale height 1.5 - 3.0 kpc) disk population of MACHOs. Such a population represents a reasonable alternative to standard halo configurations of a lensing population. We find that very thick disk distributions can lower the lens mass estimate derived from the microlensing data toward the LMC, although an average lens mass substantially below $0.3\Msol$ is unlikely. Constraints from direct searches for such lenses imply very low luminosity objects: thus thick disks do not solve the microlensing lens problem. We discuss further microlensing consequ…
We present observations of a circumstellar disk that is inclined close to edge-on around a young brown dwarf in the Taurus star-forming region. Using data obtained with SpeX at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility, we find that the slope of the 0.8-2.5 um spectrum of the brown dwarf 2MASS J04381486+2611399 cannot be reproduced with a photosphere reddened by normal extinction. Instead, the slope is consistent with scattered light, indicating that circumstellar material is occulting the brown dwarf. By combining the SpeX data with mid-IR photometry and spectroscopy from the Spitzer Space Telesco…
Stellar photometry obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope is used to study the distributions of the number densities of stars of various ages in 12 irregular and dwarf spiral galaxies viewed edge-on. Two subsystems can be distinguished in all the galaxies: a thin disk comprised of young stars and a thick disk containing a large fraction of the old stars (primarily red giants) in the system. Variations of the stellar number densities in the thin and thick disks in the Z direction perpendicular to the plane of the galaxy follow an exponential law. The size of the thin disk corresponds to the …
Protoplanetary disks start their lives with a dust free inner region where the temperatures are higher than the sublimation temperature of solids. As the star illuminates the innermost particles, which are immersed in gas at the sublimation edge, these particles are subject to a photophoretic force. We examine the motion of dust particles at the inner edge of protoplanetary disks due to photophoretic drag. We find that, in a laminar disk, photophoretic drag increases the size of the inner hole after accretion onto the central body has become subdued. This region within the hole becomes an opti…
We study the edge-on galaxy NGC 5775, utilizing a 58.2 ks {\sl Chandra} ACIS-S observation together with complementary {\sl HST} ACS, {\sl Spitzer} IRAC and other multi-wavelength data sets. This edge-on galaxy, with its disk-wide active star formation, is particularly well-suited for studying the disk/halo interaction on sub-galactic scales. We detect 27 discrete X-ray sources within the $D_{25}$ region of the galaxy, including an ultra-luminous source with a 0.3-7 keV luminosity of $\sim7\times10^{40}\rm ergs s^{-1}$. The source-removed diffuse X-ray emission shows several prominent extrapla…
We present observations of highly inclined, HI deficient, Virgo cluster spiral galaxies. Our high-resolution VLA HI observations of edge-on galaxies allow us to distinguish extraplanar gas from disk gas. All of our galaxies have truncated H-alpha disks, with little or no disk gas beyond a truncation radius. While all the gas disks are truncated, the observations show evidence for a continuum of stripping states: symmetric, undisturbed truncated gas disks indicate galaxies that were stripped long ago, while more asymmetric disks suggest ongoing or more recent stripping. We compare these timesca…
We present 21-cm HI line and optical R-band observations for a sample of 26 edge-on galaxies. The HI observations were obtained with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, and are part of the WHISP database (Westerbork HI Survey of Spiral and Irregular Galaxies). We present HI maps, optical images, and radial HI density profiles. We have also derived the rotation curves and studied the warping and lopsidedness of the HI disks. 20 out of the 26 galaxies of our sample are warped, confirming that warping of the HI disks is a very common phenomenon in disk galaxies. Indeed, we find that all gal…
We present a kinematic study of the outer regions (R_25<R<2 R_25) of 17 edge-on disk galaxies. Using deep long-slit spectroscopy (flux sensitivity a few 10^-19 erg s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2), we search for H-alpha emission, which must be emitted at these flux levels by any accumulation of hydrogen due to the presence of the extragalactic UV background and any other, local source of UV flux. We present results from the individual galaxy spectra and a stacked composite. We detect H-alpha in many cases well beyond R_25 and sometimes as far as 2 R_25. The combination of sensitivity, spatial resolution,…
The results of the stellar photometry of the images ACS/WFC and WFPC2 of the HST are used to study stellar population and spatial distribution of stars in three edge-on galaxies: NGC 891, NGC 4144 and NGC 4244. The measuring of the number density of the old stars revealed two stellar substructures in these galaxies: thick disk and halo. The borders of these substructures consisting mainly of red giants, are determined by the change of number density gradient of the old stars. The revealed halos have flattened shapes and extend up to 25 kpc from the galaxy planes. The obtained results of number…
I review observations of truncations of stellar disks and models for their origin, compare observations of truncations in moderately inclined galaxies to those in edge-on systems and discuss the relation between truncations and HI-warps and their systematics and origin. Truncations are a common feature in edge-on stellar disks, but the relation of truncations in face-on to those in edge-on galaxies needs further clarification. The origin of truncations is most likely related to a maximum in the specific angular momentum in the material that formed the stellar disks, but this model does probabl…
From observations of edge-on, late-type galaxies, we present morphological evidence that some nuclear star clusters have experienced in situ star formation. We find three nuclear clusters that, viewed from the edge-on perspective, have both a compact disk-like component and a spheroidal component. In each cluster, the disk components are closely aligned with the major axis of the host galaxy and have bluer colors than the spheroidal components. We spectroscopically verify that one of the observed multiple component clusters has multiple generations of stars. These observations lead us to sugge…
A simple algorithm is employed to deproject the two dimensional images of a pilot sample of 12 high-quality images of edge-on disk galaxies and to study their intrinsic 3 dimensional stellar distribution. We examine the radial profiles of the stars as a function of height above the plane and report a general trend within our sample of an increasing radial scalelength with height outside of the dustlane. This could be explained by the widespread presence of a thick disk component in these galaxies. In addition, the 3 dimensional view allows the study of the vertical distribution of the outer di…
We have obtained deep surface photometry of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4244. Our data reliably reach 27.5 R magnitude arcsec^{-2}, a significant improvement on our earlier deep CCD surface photometry of other galaxies. NGC 4244 is a nearby Scd galaxy whose total luminosity is approximately one magnitude fainter than the peak of the Sc luminosity function. We find that it has a simple structure: a single exponential disk, with a scale height h_Z = 246 +/- 2 pc, a scale length h_R = 1.84 +/- 0.02 kpc and a disk cutoff at a radius R(max) = 10.0 kpc (5.4 scale lengths). We confirm a strong cuto…
We observed the embedded, young 8--10 Msun star AFGL 490 at subarcsecond resolution with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer in the C17O (2--1) transition and found convincing evidence that AFGL 490 is surrounded by a rotating disk. Using two-dimensional modeling of the physical and chemical disk structure coupled to line radiative transfer, we constrain its basic parameters. We obtain a relatively high disk mass of 1 Msun and a radius of ~ 1500 AU. A plausible explanation for the apparent asymmetry of the disk morphology is given.
We present the CXOCY J220132.8-320144 system, which is composed of an edge-on spiral galaxy at z=0.32 lensing a z=3.9 background quasar. Two images of the quasar are seen. The geometry of the system is favorable to separate the relative mass contribution of the disk and halo in the inner parts of the galaxy. We model the system with one elliptical mass component with the same ellipticity as the light distribution and manage to reproduce the quasar image positions and fluxes. We also model the system with two mass components, disk and halo. Again, we manage to reproduce the quasar image positio…
Present in over 45% of local spirals, boxy and peanut-shaped bulges are generally interpreted as edge-on bars and may represent a key phase in the evolution of bulges. Aiming to test such claims, the kinematic properties of self-consistent 3D N-body simulations of bar-unstable disks are studied. Using Gauss-Hermite polynomials to describe the stellar kinematics, a number of characteristic bar signatures are identified in edge-on disks: 1) a major-axis light profile with a quasi-exponential central peak and a plateau at moderate radii (Freeman Type II profile); 2) a ``double-hump'' rotation cur…
We report a discovery of young stellar objects associated with a molecular cloud at the edge of the optical disk of our Galaxy. This cloud is denoted as Cloud 2 in the list by Digel et al. and it is one of the most distant molecular clouds from the Galactic center known to date, with a probable distance of 15-19 kpc. We found seven red near-infrared sources associated with this cloud. Based on our near-infrared observations and far-infrared/radio data in the literature, we conclude that most sources are likely to be members of Cloud 2. The geometry of ionized gas, IRAS sources, near-infrared s…
Aims. The extraplanar stellar populations of highly-inclined disk galaxies IC 2233, IC 5052, NGC 4631 and NGC 5023 are analyzed with the goal to quantify their vertical extent and structure. Methods. Based on the single-star photometry, we separate different stellar populations and analyze their spatial distribution. Results. On archival images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC the surroundings of these galaxies are well resolved into stars with the red giant population (RGB) identified far above the galaxy mid-planes. We find that there are a profound change in slope of the num…
We have simultaneously monitored the photometric and polarimetric variations of the Classical T Tauri star AA Tau during the fall of 2002. We combine these data with previously published polarimetric data covering two earlier epochs. The phase coverage is complete, although not contiguous. AA Tau clearly shows cyclic variations coupled with the rotation of the system. The star-disk system produces a repeatable polarisation curve where the polarisation increases with decreasing brightness. The data fit well with the model put forward by Bouvier et al. (1999) where AA Tau is viewed almost edge-o…
We recently reported the discovery of a regular corrugation pattern in the HI disk of the isolated, edge-on spiral galaxy IC2233. Here we present measurements of the vertical structure of this galaxy at several additional wavelengths, ranging from the far ultraviolet to the far infrared. We find that undular patterns with amplitude ~5''(~250 pc) are visible in a variety of Population I tracers in IC2233, including the young-to-intermediate age stars, the HII regions, and the dust. However, the vertical excursions become less pronounced in the older stellar populations traced by the mid-infrare…
The local axisymmetric stability of hydrodynamical and magnetized, nearly-Keplerian gaseous accretion disks around non-rotating black holes is examined in the vicinity of the classical marginally-stable orbit (at radii ~ R_ms). An approximate Paczynski-Wiita pseudo-Newtonian potential is used. Hydrodynamical disks are linearly unstable inside a radius which differs slightly from the classical R_ms value because of finite pressure and radial stratification effects. Linear stresses associated with unstable hydrodynamical modes vanish exactly at the radius of marginal stability and are generally …
