Edge-on spiral galaxies offer a unique perspective on disks. One can accurately determine the height distribution of stars and ISM and the line-of-sight integration allows for the study of faint structures. The Spitzer IRAC camera is an ideal instrument to study both the ISM and stellar structure in nearby galaxies; two of its channels trace the old stellar disk with little extinction and the 8 micron channel is dominated by the smallest dust grains (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, PAHs).
Dalcanton et al. (2004) probed the link between the appearance of dust lanes and the disk stability. In a sample of bulge-less disks they show how in massive disks the ISM collapses into the characteristic thin dust lane. Less massive disks are gravitationally stable and their dust morphology is fractured. The transition occurs at 120 km/s for bulgeless disks.
Here we report on our results of our Spitzer/IRAC survey of nearby edge-on spirals and its first results on the NIR Tully-Fischer relation, and ISM disk stability.
We present Spitzer mid-infrared imaging of a sample of 35 tidally-distorted pre-merger interacting galaxy pairs selected from the Arp Atlas. We compare their global mid-infrared properties with those of normal galaxies from the SINGS Spitzer Legacy survey, and separate the disk emission from that of the tidal features. The [8.0 micron] - [24 micron], [3.6 micron] - [24 micron], and [5.8 micron] - [8.0 micron] colors of these optically-selected interacting galaxies are redder on average than those of spirals, implying enhancements to the mass-normalized star formation rates (SFRs) of a factor o…
We present Spitzer mid-infrared images from a survey of three dozen pre-merger strongly interacting galaxy pairs selected from the Arp Atlas. The global mid-infrared colors of these galaxies and their tidal tails and bridges are similar to those of normal spiral galaxies, thus this optically selected sample of interacting galaxies does not have strongly enhanced normalized star formation rates in their disks or tidal features. Despite distortion and disturbance these systems continue to form stars at a normal rate on average. The morphology of these galaxies is generally smoother in the shorte…

New images of M31 at 24, 70, and 160 micron taken with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) reveal the morphology of the dust in this galaxy. This morphology is well represented by a composite of two logarithmic spiral arms and a circular ring (radius ~10 kpc) of star formation offset from the nucleus. The two spiral arms appear to start at the ends of a bar in the nuclear region and extend beyond the star forming ring. As has been found in previous work, the spiral arms are not continuous but composed of spiral segments. The star forming ring is very circular except for a regio…
In an earlier study of the spiral galaxy M33, we photometrically identified arcs or outer spiral arms of intermediate age (0.6 Gyr - 2 Gyr) carbon stars precisely at the commencement of the HI-warp. Stars in the arcs were unresolved, but were likely thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch carbon stars. Here we present Keck I spectroscopy of seven intrinsically bright and red target stars in the outer, northern arc in M33. The target stars have estimated visual magnitudes as faint as V \sim 25 mag. Absorption bands of CN are seen in all seven spectra reported here, confirming their carbon sta…
We present the initial results from SPITSOV, the Spitzer Survey of Virgo, which includes MIPS and IRAC observations for a carefully selected sample of 44 Virgo cluster spiral and peculiar galaxies. SPITSOV is part of a multiwavelength campaign to understand the effects of the cluster environment on galaxy evolution. These Virgo galaxies are different from galaxies outside of clusters, since most of them have been significantly modified by their environment. The SPITSOV data can serve the community as the Spitzer sample of nearby cluster spiral galaxies, a complement to the SINGS data for nearb…
The Spitzer Space Telescope, NASA's Great Observatory for infrared astronomy, has made available new tools for the investigation of the infrared properties of planetary nebulae. The three instruments onboard, including the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC), the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS), and the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS), provide imaging capability from 3.6 to 160 microns, and low and moderate resolution spectroscopy from 5.2 to 38 microns. In this paper I review recent Spitzer results concerning planetary nebulae and their asymmetrical structures.
We explore the nature of variations in dust emission within an individual galaxy using 3.6 - 160 micron Spitzer Space Telescope observations and 450 and 850 micron James Clerk Maxwell Telescope observations of the edge-on Sd spiral galaxy NGC 4631 with the goals of understanding the relation between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and dust emission, studying the variations in the colors of the dust emission, and searching for possible excess submillimeter emission compared to what is anticipated based on dust models applied to the mid- and far-infrared data. PAH emission at 8 micron is …
I present a brief review of some of the mid-infrared properties of interacting galaxies as these were revealed using observations from the Infrared Space Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope over the last decade. The variation of the infrared spectral energy distribution in interacting galaxies can be used as an extinction free tracer not only of the location of the star formation activity but also of the physical mechanism dominating their energy production.
A proper analysis of the evolution of sources emitting in the Mid-Infrared is strongly dependent on their broad-band spectral properties (SEDs) at different redshifts and luminosities and on a reliable classification allowing to disentangle AGN from star-formation activity. The diagnostic diagrams based on the optical line ratios are often ambiguous and/or misleading not allowing a proper separation of the galaxy/AGN populations. Thanks to the combination of deep Spitzer and X-rays data a much better census of the hidden AGN activity and dust-obscured star-forming galaxies can be obtained, con…
Recent X-ray surveys have provided a large number of high-luminosity, obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), the so-called Type 2 quasars. Despite the large amount of multi-wavelength supporting data, the main parameters related to the black holes harbored in such AGN are still poorly known. Here we present the results obtained for a sample of eight Type 2 quasars in the redshift range 0.9-2.1 selected from the HELLAS2XMM survey, for which we used Ks-band, Spitzer IRAC and MIPS data at 24 micron to estimate bolometric corrections, black hole masses, and Eddington ratios.
Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) represent the earliest observed stages of clustered star formation, characterized by large column densities of cold and dense molecular material observed in silhouette against a bright background of mid-IR emission. Up to now, IRDCs were predominantly known toward the inner Galaxy where background infrared emission levels are high. We present Spitzer observations with the Infrared Camera Array toward object G111.80+0.58 (G111) in the outer Galactic Plane, located at a distance of ~3 kpc from us and ~10 kpc from the Galactic center. Earlier results show that G111 is…
We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of stars in the young ~5 Myr gamma Velorum stellar cluster. Combining optical and 2MASS photometry, we have selected 579 stars as candidate members of the cluster. With the addition of the Spitzer mid-infrared data, we have identified 5 debris disks around A-type stars, and 5-6 debris disks around solar-type stars, indicating that the strong radiation field in the cluster does not completely suppress the production of planetesimals in the disks of cluster members. However, we find some evidence that the frequency of circumstellar primordial d…
We present a novel classification scheme for stars evolving in the transition phase between the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) to the Planetary Nebula (PN) stage based on the results obtained with ISO-SWS. With the better sensitivity and higher spatial resolution of Spitzer this analysis can now be extended to a larger number of sources located in the Galactic Bulge, in the Magellanic Clouds and in other Galaxies of the Local Group, offering an excellent opportunity to study the validity of the proposed scheme in environments which are free of the distance scale bias that hinder the observation…
Using a combination of deep MID-IR observations obtained by IRAC, MIPS and IRS on board Spitzer we investigate the MID-IR properties of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z~3, establish a better understanding of their nature and attempt a complete characterisation of the population. With deep mid-infrared and optical observations of ~1000 LBGs covered by IRAC/MIPS and from the ground respectively, we extend the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the LBGs to mid-infrared. Spitzer data reveal for the first time that the mid-infrared properties of the population are inhomogeneous ranging from th…
We present an observation of the very late thermal pulse object V4334 Sgr (Sakurai's Object) with the Infrared Spectrometer (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The emission from 5-38 microns is dominated by the still-cooling dust shell. A number of features are seen in absorption against the dust shell, which we attribute to HCN and polyyne molecules. We use these features to determine the 12C/13C ratio for the absorbing gas to be ~ 3.2 (+3.2,-1.6}; this implies that, despite the H-content of the molecules, the hydrocarbon-bearing gas must have originated in material produced in the very lat…
We present Spitzer/IRAC photometry on the star-forming HII region N 90, related to the young stellar association NGC 602 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Our photometry revealed bright mid-infrared sources, which we classify with the use of a scheme based on templates and models of red sources in the Milky Way, and criteria recently developed from the Spitzer Survey of the SMC for the selection of candidate Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). We detected 57 sources in all four IRAC channels in a 6.2' x 4.8' field-of-view centered on N 90; 22 of these sources are classified as candidate YSOs. We compar…
IZw18, a blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy with the 2nd lowest metallicity measured in a star-forming object, has been observed with all three instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. We present the deepest 5-36 micron mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectrum of this galaxy as yet obtained, as well as 3.6 to 70 micron imaging results. As with SBS0335-052E, another BCD with similar metallicity, IZw18 shows no detectable emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, the continuum emission, from 15 to 70 micron, of IZw18 has a much steeper slope, more characteristic of a typical st…
Archival observations of 18 starburst galaxies that span a wide range in metallicity reveal for the first time a correlation between the ratio of emission line fluxes of [FeII] at 26 microns and [NeII] at 12.8 microns and the 7.7 micron PAH strength, with the [FeII]/[NeII] flux ratio decreasing with increasing PAH strength. We also find a strong correlation between the [FeII]/[NeII] flux ratio and the host galaxy metallicity, with the flux ratio decreasing with increasing metallicity. Since [FeII] emission has been linked primarily to supernova shocks, we attribute the high [FeII]/[NeII] ratio…
Dust in galaxies can be mapped by either the FIR/sub-mm emission, the optical or infrared reddening of starlight, or the extinction of a known background source. We compare two dust extinction measurements for a set of fifteen sections in thirteen nearby galaxies, to determine the scale of the dusty ISM responsible for disk opacity: one using stellar reddening and the other a known background source. In our earlier papers, we presented extinction measurements of 29 galaxies, based on calibrated counts of distant background objects identified though foreground disks in HST/WFPC2 images. For the…
Many early-type galaxies are detected at 24 to 160 micron but the emission is usually dominated by an AGN or heating from the evolved stellar population. Here we present MIPS observations of a sample of elliptical and lenticular galaxies which are rich in cold molecular gas, and we investigate how much of the MIR to FIR emission could be due to star formation activity. The 24 micron images show a rich variety of structures, including nuclear point sources, rings, disks, and smooth extended emission, and comparisons to matched-resolution CO and radio continuum images suggest that the bulk of th…
We have obtained high S/N Spitzer IRS spectra of 17 Virgo early-type galaxies that lie on the colour-magnitude relation of passively evolving galaxies in the cluster. To flux calibrate these extended sources we have devised a new procedure that allows us to obtain the intrinsic spectral energy distribution and to disentangle resolved and unresolved emission within the same object. Thirteen objects of the sample (76%) show a pronounced broad silicate feature (above 10micron) which is spatially extended and likely of stellar origin, in agreement with model predictions. The other 4 objects (24%) …
We present ground-based optical and Spitzer infrared imaging observations of the interacting galaxy UGC 10214, the "Tadpole Galaxy" (z = 0.0310), focusing on the star formation activity in the nuclear, disk, spiral arms and tidal tail regions. The major findings of this study are that the Tadpole is actively forming stars in the main disk outside of the nucleus and in the tidal plume, with an estimated mean star formation rate of ~2 to 4 M_sun/yr. The most prominent sites of mid-infrared emission define a "ring" morphology that, combined with the overall morphology of the system, suggest the i…
A large position angle misalignment between the stellar bar and the distribution of dust in the late-type barred spiral NGC 3488 was discovered, using mid-infrared images from the Spitzer Space Telescope and optical images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The angle between the bar and dust patterns was measured to be 25+-2deg, larger than most of the misalignments found previously in barred systems based on Ha or HI/CO observations. The stellar bar is bright at optical and 3.6um, while the dust pattern is more prominent in the 8um band but also shows up in the SDSS u and g-band images…
Dust emission in the far-infrared (FIR) characterizes the temperature and quantity of interstellar dust in a spiral disk. The three Spitzer/MIPS bands are well suited to measuring the gradient in temperature and the total optical depth in the disk of a spiral galaxy. Another way to estimate the quantity of dust in a spiral disk is the "Synthetic Field Method" (SFM, Gonzalez et al. 1998), which uses the number of distant field galaxies seen through the disk of the nearby spiral. The optical depth estimated from this method can be compared to the values derived from the FIR emission. Since the t…
The normalized inclination distributions are presented for the spiral galaxies in RC3. The results show that, except for the bin of $81^{\circ}$-$90^{\circ}$, in which the apparent minor isophotal diameters that are used to obtain the inclinations, are affected by the central bulges, the distributions for Sa, Sab, Scd and Sd are well consistent with the Monte-Carlo simulation of random inclinations within 3-$σ$, and Sb and Sbc almost, but Sc is different. One reason for the difference between the real distribution and the Monte-Carlo simulation of Sc may be that some quite inclined spirals, th…
I discuss constraints on star--formation and AGN activity in massive galaxies at z~1-3 using observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope. In particular I focus on a sample of distant red galaxies (DRGs) with J-K>2.3 in GOODS-S. Based on their ACS, ISAAC, and IRAC photometry, the DRGs have typical stellar masses >10^11 Msol. Interestingly, the majority (>50%) of these objects have 24 micron detections. If attributed to star formation, this implies SFRs of ~100-1000 Msol/yr. Thus, massive galaxies at z~1.5-3 have specific SFRs equal to or exceeding the global average value at that epoch. In co…
We present a population synthesis study of NGC4435, an early-type Virgo galaxy interacting with NGC4438. We combine new spectroscopic observations obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope IRS instrument with IRAC archival data and broad band data from the literature. The IRS spectrum shows prominent PAH features, low ionization emission lines and H_2 rotational lines arising from the dusty circumnuclear disk characterizing this galaxy. The central SED, from X-ray to radio, is well fitted by a model of an exponential burst superimposed on an old simple stellar population. From the lack of high…
We present Spitzer observations of the blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) Haro 3, with an oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H)=8.32. These data are part of a larger study of star formation and dust in low-metallicity environments. The IRS spectrum of Haro 3 shows strong narrow Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, with high equivalent widths. Gaseous nebular fine-structure lines are also seen. Despite the absence of optical high-excitation lines, a faint high-ionization [O IV] line at 25.89 micron indicates the presence of radiation as hard as 54.9 eV. A CLOUDY model suggests that the MIR lin…
We present near-infrared (H- and K-band) SINFONI integral-field observations of the circumnuclear star formation rings in five nearby spiral galaxies. We made use of the relative intensities of different emission lines (i.e. [FeII], HeI, Brg) to age date the stellar clusters present along the rings. This qualitative, yet robust, method allows us to discriminate between two distinct scenarios that describe how star formation progresses along the rings. Our findings favour a model where star formation is triggered predominantly at the intersection between the bar major axis and the inner Lindbla…
The opacity of a spiral disk due to dust absorption influences every measurement we make of it in the UV and optical. Two separate techniques directly measure the total absorption by dust in the disk: calibrated distant galaxy counts and overlapping galaxy pairs. The main results from both so far are a semi-transparent disk with more opaque arms, and a relation between surface brightness and disk opacity. In the Spitzer era, SED models of spiral disks add a new perspective on the role of dust in spiral disks. Combined with the overall opacity from galaxy counts, they yield a typical optical de…
We present results from two mid-infrared imaging programs of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and fine-structure elliptical galaxies. The former are known to nearly all be recent mergers between two gas-rich spiral galaxies, while the latter are also believed to be even more aged merger remnants. An examination of these two classes of objects, which may represent different stages of the same putative merger sequence, should reveal similarities in the distribution of their stellar populations and dust content consistent with that expected for time-evolution of the merger. The data revea…
(Abridged) Far ultraviolet to far infrared images of the nearby galaxy NGC5194, from Spitzer, GALEX, Hubble Space Telescope and ground--based data, are used to investigate local and global star formation, and the impact of dust extinction in HII-emitting knots. In the IR/UV-UV color plane, the NGC5194 HII knots show the same trend observed for normal star-forming galaxies, having a much larger dispersion than starburst galaxies. We identify the dispersion as due to the UV emission predominantly tracing the evolved, non-ionizing stellar population, up to ages 50-100 Myr. While in starbursts the…
The Warm Ionized Medium (WIM), also referred to as Diffuse Ionized Gas, contains most of the mass of interstellar medium in ionized form, contributing as much as 30% of the total atomic gas mass in the solar neighborhood. The advent of CCDs has enabled unprecedented study of this medium in external galaxies, probing a variety of environments. In particular, we can derive the morphology of the WIM, its distribution across disks, and the correlation with other Population I material. Spectroscopy of the WIM makes it possible to test various ionization models. I will review here our current unders…
We combine optical morphologies and photometry from HST, redshifts from Keck, and mid-infrared luminosities from Spitzer for an optically selected sample of~800 galaxies in GOODS-N to track morphology evolution of infrared luminous galaxies (LIRGs) since redshift z=1. We find a 50% decline in the number of LIRGs from z~1 to lower redshift, in agreement with previous studies. In addition, there is evidence for a morphological evolution of the populations of LIRGs. Above z=0.5, roughly half of all LIRGs are spiral, the peculiar/irregular to spiral ratio is ~0.7, and both classes span a similar r…
(abridged) We present new Spitzer, UKIRT and MMT observations of the blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) Mrk 996, with an oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H)=8.0. This galaxy has the peculiarity of possessing an extraordinarily dense nuclear star-forming region, with a central density of ~10^6 cm^{-3}. The nuclear region of Mrk 996 is characterized by several unusual properties: a very red color J-K = 1.8, broad and narrow emission-line components, and ionizing radiation as hard as 54.9 eV, as implied by the presence of the OIV 25.89 micron line. The nucleus is located within an exponential disk with …

We investigate the properties of optically passive spirals and dusty red galaxies in the A901/2 cluster complex at redshift ~0.17 using restframe near-UV-optical SEDs, 24 micron IR data and HST morphologies from the STAGES dataset. The cluster sample is based on COMBO-17 redshifts with an rms precision of sigma_cz~2000 km/sec. We find that 'dusty red galaxies' and 'optically passive spirals' in A901/2 are largely the same phenomenon, and that they form stars at a substantial rate, which is only 4x lower than that in blue spirals at fixed mass. This star formation is more obscured than in blue …
We report simulations of the gas flow in the gravitational potential of the COBE NIR bulge and disk. These models lead to four--armed spiral structure between corotation of the bar and the Sun, in agreement with the observed spiral arm tangents. The 3-kpc-arm is identified with one of the arms emanating from the ends of the bar.
The Triangulum Spiral Galaxy Messier 33 offers unique insights into the building of a galactic disk. We identify spectacular arcs of intermediate age (0.6 Gyr - 2 Gyr) stars in the low-metallicity outer disk. The northern arc spans approx. 120 degrees in azimuth and up to 5 arcmin in width. The arcs are located 2-3 disk scale lengths from the galaxy centre (where 1 disk scale length is equivalent to 0.1 degrees in the V-band) and lie precisely where there is a warp in the HI profile of M33. Warps and infall are inextricably linked (Binney, 1992). We present spectroscopy of candidate stars in t…
We analyze a sample of ~2600 MIPS/Spitzer 24mic sources brighter than ~80muJy and located in the Chandra Deep Field South to characterize the evolution of the comoving infrared (IR) energy density of the Universe up to z~1. Using published ancillary optical data we first obtain a nearly complete redshift determination for the 24mic objects associated with R<24 counterparts at z<1. We find that the 24mic population at 0.5<z<1 is dominated by ``Luminous Infrared Galaxies'' (i.e., 10^11 L_sol < L_IR < 10^12 L_sol), the counterparts of which appear to be also luminous at optical wavelengths and te…
Prompted by work on the buckling instability in barred spiral galaxies, much effort has been devoted lately to the study of boxy/peanut-shaped (B/PS) bulges. Here, we present new bar diagnostics for edge-on spiral galaxies based on periodic orbits calculations and hydrodynamical simulations. Both approaches provide reliable ways to identify bars and their orientations in edge-on systems. We also present the results of an observational search for bars in a large sample of edge-on spirals with and without B/PS bulges. We show that most B/PS bulges are due to the presence of a thick bar viewed ed…
This paper considers the distribution of dust which originates in the break-up of planetesimals that are trapped in resonance with a planet. There are three grain populations with different spatial distributions: (I) large grains have the clumpy resonant distribution of the planetesimals; (II) moderate sized grains are no longer in resonance and have an axisymmetric distribution; (III) small grains are blown out of the system by radiation pressure and have a distribution which falls off oc 1/r, however these grains can be further divided into subclasses: (IIIa) grains produced from pop I that …
We investigate the relations among the stellar continuum-subtracted 8 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH 8 micron) emission, 24 micron hot dust emission, and 160 micron cold dust emission in fifteen nearby face-on spiral galaxies in the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey sample. The relation between PAH 8 and 24 micron emission measured in ~2 kpc regions is found to exhibit a significant amount of scatter, and strong spatial variations are observed in the (PAH 8 micron)/24 micron surface brightness ratio. In particular, the (PAH 8 micron)/24 micron surface brightness ratio is obs…
We investigate the instantaneous star formation rates (SFR) and extinction properties for a large (N=274), near-infrared (2.2 micron) + mid-infrared (24 micron) selected sample of normal to ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) [10^9<L_{IR}/L_{sun}<10^12.5] with <z>~0.8 in the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey. We combine Spitzer MIPS 24-micron observations with high-resolution, optical Keck Deimos spectroscopy to derive optical emission-line and infrared star formation rates (SFR_{opt} & SFR_{IR}, respectively). Direct comparison of these SFR diagnostics reveals that our sample exhi…
We use a 24 micron selected sample containing more than 8,000 sources to study the evolution of star-forming galaxies in the redshift range from z=0 to z~3. We obtain photometric redshifts for most of the sources in our survey using a method based on empirically-built templates spanning from ultraviolet to mid-infrared wavelengths. The accuracy of these redshifts is better than 10% for 80% of the sample. The derived redshift distribution of the sources detected by our survey peaks at around z=0.6-1.0 (the location of the peak being affected by cosmic variance), and decays monotonically from z~…
The quantity of dust in a spiral disk can be estimated using the dust's typical emission or the extinction of a known source. In this paper, we compare two techniques, one based on emission and one on absorption, applied on sections of fourteen disk galaxies. The two measurements reflect, respectively the average and apparent optical depth of a disk section. Hence, they depend differently on the average number and optical depth of ISM structures in the disk. The small scale geometry of the cold ISM is critical for accurate models of the overall energy budget of spiral disks. ISM geometry, rela…
We estimate a characteristic timescale for star formation in the spiral arms of disk galaxies, going from atomic hydrogen (HI) to dust-enshrouded massive stars. Drawing on high-resolution HI data from The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey and 24$μ$m images from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey we measure the average angular offset between the HI and 24$μ$m emissivity peaks as a function of radius, for a sample of 14 nearby disk galaxies. We model these offsets assuming an instantaneous kinematic pattern speed, $Ω_p$, and a timescale, t(HI-->24$μ$m), for the characteristic time span between th…
The halo of NGC 891 has been the subject of studies for more than a decade. One of its most striking features is the large asymmetry in H-$α$ emission. We have taken a quantitative look at this asymmetry at different wavelengths for the first time. We propose that NGC 891 is intrinsically almost symmetric, as seen in Spitzer observations, and the large asymmetry in H-$α$ emission is mostly due to dust attenuation. We quantify the additional optical depth needed to cause the observed H-$α$ asymmetry. A comparison of large strips on the North East side of the galaxy with strips covering the same…
Spitzer-MIPS 24 micron and ground-based observations of the rich galaxy cluster Abell 851 at z=0.41 are used to derive star formation rates from the mid-IR 24 micron and from [O II] 3727 emission. Many cluster galaxies have SFR(24 um)/SFR([O II]) >> 1, indicative of star formation highly obscured by dust. We focus on the substantial minority of A851 cluster members where strong Balmer absorption points to a starburst on a 10^{8-9} year timescale. As is typical, A851 galaxies with strong Balmer absorption occur in two types: with optical emission (starforming), and without (post-starburst). Our…
(Abridged) We present a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between star formation rate surface density (SFR SD) and gas surface density (gas SD) at sub-kpc resolution in a sample of 18 nearby galaxies. We use high resolution HI data from THINGS, CO data from HERACLES and BIMA SONG, 24 micron data from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and UV data from GALEX. We target 7 spiral galaxies and 11 late-type/dwarf galaxies and investigate how the star formation law differs between the H2-dominated centers of spiral galaxies, their HI-dominated outskirts and the HI-rich late-type/dwarf galaxies. W…
We present deep Spitzer-IRS low-resolution (lambda/Delta lambda ~ 100) 5-35 micron spectroscopy of the edge-on disk ``the Flying Saucer'' (2MASS J16281370-2431391) in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. The spectral energy distribution exhibits the characteristic two-peak shape predicted for a circumstellar disk viewed very close to edge-on. The short-wavelength peak is entirely due to photons scattered off the surface of the disk, while the long-wavelength peak is due to thermal emission from the disk itself. The Spitzer spectrum represents the first spectroscopic detection of scattered light out …
We present a survey of spiral arm extinction substructure referred to as feathers in 223 spiral galaxies using HST WFPC2 images. The sample includes all galaxies in the RC3 catalog with cz < 5000 km/s, B_T < 15, i < 60 degrees, and types Sa--Sd with well-exposed broadband WFPC2 images. The detection frequency of delineated, periodic feathers in this sample is 20% (45 of 223). This work is consistent with Lynds (1970), who concluded that feathers are common in prototypical Sc galaxies; we find that feathers are equally common in Sb galaxies. Sb--Sc galaxies without clear evidence for feathers e…
We present a study of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 using mid- and far- infrared data acquired with the IRAC, IRS, and MIPS instruments aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The images show extensive 8 um and 24 um emission coinciding with star formation in the inner spiral approximately 15" (1 kpc) from the nucleus, and a bright complex of star formation 47" (3 kpc) SW of the nucleus. The brightest 8 um PAH emission regions coincide remarkably well with knots observed in an Halpha image. Strong PAH features at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 um are detected in IRS spectra measured at numerous loca…
We examine the present-day galaxy disk colors and star formation rates (SFRs) in the semi-analytic model of Cole et al. (2000). We find that the fiducial model is a good match to Kennicutt's (1998) observed global star formation law, the color-based metallicity-magnitude correlation and the colors of low-luminosity galaxies. The main limitation of the model, from the point of view of present-day spirals, is that the optical colors of the disks of very luminous spiral galaxies are too blue, even after accounting for the effects of dust.
We investigate the origin of the strong radial gradient in the ultraviolet-to-infrared ratio in the spiral galaxy NGC 300, and emphasize the importance of local variations in the interstellar medium geometry, concluding that they cannot be neglected with respect to metallicity effects. This analysis is based upon a combination of maps from GALEX and Spitzer, and from the ground (UBVRI, Halpha and Hbeta). We select ionizing stellar clusters associated with HII regions of widely varying morphologies, and derive their fundamental parameters from population synthesis fitting of their spectral ener…
We carried out the direct measurement of the fraction of dusty sources in a sample of extremely red galaxies with (R - Ks) > 5.3mag and Ks < 20.2mag, using 24um data from the Spitzer Space Telescope. Combining deep 24um, Ks- and R-band data over an area of 64sq.arcmin in ELAIS N1, we find that 50%+-6% of our ERO sample have measurable 24um flux above the 3sigma flux limit of 40uJy. This flux limit corresponds to a SFR of 12Msun/yr at z~1. The 24um-detected EROs have 24-to-2.2 and 24-to-0.7um flux ratios consistent with infrared luminous, dusty sources at z>1, and an order of magnitude too red …
