We say that a graph G has a perfect H-packing (also called an H-factor) if there exists a set of disjoint copies of H in G which together cover all the vertices of G. Given a graph H, we determine, asymptotically, the Ore-type degree condition which ensures that a graph G has a perfect H-packing. More precisely, let δ_{\rm Ore} (H,n) be the smallest number k such that every graph G whose order n is divisible by |H| and with d(x)+d(y)\geq k for all non-adjacent x \not = y \in V(G) contains a perfect H-packing. We determine \lim_{n\to \infty} δ_{\rm Ore} (H,n)/n.
Win [\emph{J. Graph Theory} {\bf 6}(1982), 489--492] conjectured that a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains $k$ disjoint perfect matchings, if the degree sum of any two nonadjacent vertices is at least $n+k-2$, where $n$ is even and $n\geq k+2$. In this paper, we prove that Win's conjecture is true for $k\geq n/2$, where $n$ is sufficiently large. To show this result, we prove a theorem on $k$-factor in a graph under some Ore-type condition. Our main tools include Tutte's $k$-factor theorem, the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker theorem on convex optimization, and the solution to the longstanding 1-factor dec…
It is known that $\sum\limits_{i =1}^\infty {1/ i^2}={π^2/6}$. Meir and Moser asked what is the smallest $ε$ such that all the squares of sides of length $1$, $1/2$, $1/3$, $\ldots$ can be packed into a rectangle of area ${π^2/6}+ε$. A packing into a rectangle of the right area is called perfect packing. Chalcraft packed the squares of sides of length $1$, $2^{-t}$, $3^{-t}$, $\ldots$ and he found perfect packing for $1/2<t\le3/5$. We will show based on an algorithm by Chalcraft that there are perfect packings if $1/2<t\le2/3$. Moreover we show that there is a perfect packing for all $t$ in th…
We say that a graph G has a perfect H-packing if there exists a set of vertex-disjoint copies of H which cover all the vertices in G. We consider various problems concerning perfect H-packings: Given positive integers n, r, D, we characterise the edge density threshold that ensures a perfect K_r-packing in any graph G on n vertices and with minimum degree at least D. We also give two conjectures concerning degree sequence conditions which force a graph to contain a perfect H-packing. Other related embedding problems are also considered. Indeed, we give a structural result concerning K_r-free g…
It is conjectured by Golomb and Welch around half a century ago that there is no perfect Lee codes $C$ of packing radius $r$ in $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ for $r\geq2$ and $n\geq 3$. Recently, Leung and the second author proved this conjecture for linear Lee codes with $r=2$. A natural question is whether it is possible to classify the second best, i.e., almost perfect linear Lee codes of packing radius $2$. We show that if such codes exist in $\mathbb{Z}^n$, then $n$ must be $1,2, 11, 29, 47, 56, 67, 79, 104, 121, 134$ or $191$.
We prove that one can perfectly pack degenerate graphs into complete or dense $n$-vertex quasirandom graphs, provided that all the degenerate graphs have maximum degree $o(\frac{n}{\log n})$, and in addition $Ω(n)$ of them have at most $(1-Ω(1))n$ vertices and $Ω(n)$ leaves. This proves Ringel's conjecture and the Gyárfás Tree Packing Conjecture for all but an exponentially small fraction of trees (or sequences of trees, respectively).
Let H be any graph. We determine (up to an additive constant) the minimum degree of a graph G which ensures that G has a perfect H-packing (also called an H-factor). More precisely, let delta(H,n) denote the smallest integer t such that every graph G whose order n is divisible by |H| and with delta(G) > t contains a perfect H-packing. We show that delta(H,n) = (1-1/χ*(H))n+O(1). The value of chi*(H) depends on the relative sizes of the colour classes in the optimal colourings of H and satisfies k-1 < chi*(H) \le k, where k is the chromatic number of H.
Given two $k$-graphs $H$ and $F$, a perfect $F$-packing in $H$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of $F$ in $H$ which together cover all the vertices in $H$. In the case when $F$ is a single edge, a perfect $F$-packing is simply a perfect matching. For a given fixed $F$, it is often the case that the decision problem whether an $n$-vertex $k$-graph $H$ contains a perfect $F$-packing is NP-complete. Indeed, if $k \geq 3$, the corresponding problem for perfect matchings is NP-complete whilst if $k=2$ the problem is NP-complete in the case when $F$ has a component consisting of at least $3…
A spanning subgraph of a graph $G$ is called a perfect star packing in $G$ if every component of the spanning subgraph is isomorphic to the star graph $K_{1,3}$. An efficient dominating set of graph $G$ is a vertex subset $D$ of $G$ such that each vertex of $G$ not in $D$ is adjacent to exactly one vertex from $D$ and any two vertices of $D$ are not adjacent in $G$. Fullerene graph is a connected plane cubic graph with only pentagonal and hexagonal faces, which is the molecular graph of carbon fullerene. Clearly, a perfect star packing in a fullerene graph $G$ on $n$ vertices will exist if and…
More than 50 years ago, Golomb and Welch conjectured that there is no perfect Lee codes $C$ of packing radius $r$ in $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ for $r\geq2$ and $n\geq 3$. Recently, Leung and the second author proved that if $C$ is linear, then the Golomb-Welch conjecture is valid for $r=2$ and $n\geq 3$. In this paper, we consider the classification of linear Lee codes with the second-best possibility, that is the density of the lattice packing of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ by Lee spheres $S(n,r)$ equals $\frac{|S(n,r)|}{|S(n,r)|+1}$. We show that, for $r=2$ and $n\equiv 0,3,4 \pmod{6}$, this packing density can n…
Let k >= 2 and F be a linear k-uniform hypergraph with v vertices. We prove that if n is sufficiently large and v|n, then every quasirandom k-uniform hypergraph on n vertices with constant edge density and minimum degree $Ω(n^{k-1})$ admits a perfect F-packing. The case k = 2 follows immediately from the blowup lemma of Komlós, Sárközy, and Szemerédi. We also prove positive results for some nonlinear F but at the same time give counterexamples for rather simple F that are close to being linear. Finally, we address the case when the density tends to zero, and prove (in analogy with the graph ca…
Let K_r^- denote the graph obtained from K_r by deleting one edge. We show that for every integer r\ge 4 there exists an integer n_0=n_0(r) such that every graph G whose order n\ge n_0 is divisible by r and whose minimum degree is at least (1-1/chi_{cr}(K_r^-))n contains a perfect K_r^- packing, i.e. a collection of disjoint copies of K_r^- which covers all vertices of G. Here chi_{cr}(K_r^-)=r(r-2)/(r-1) is the critical chromatic number of K_r^-. The bound on the minimum degree is best possible and confirms a conjecture of Kawarabayashi for large n.
We introduce a new procedure for generating the binomial random graph/hypergraph models, referred to as \emph{online sprinkling}. As an illustrative application of this method, we show that for any fixed integer $k\geq 3$, the binomial $k$-uniform random hypergraph $H^{k}_{n,p}$ contains $N:=(1-o(1))\binom{n-1}{k-1}p$ edge-disjoint perfect matchings, provided $p\geq \frac{\log^{C}n}{n^{k-1}}$, where $C:=C(k)$ is an integer depending only on $k$. Our result for $N$ is asymptotically best optimal and for $p$ is optimal up to the $polylog(n)$ factor.
For each of the notions of hypergraph quasirandomness that have been studied, we identify a large class of hypergraphs F so that every quasirandom hypergraph H admits a perfect F-packing. An informal statement of a special case of our general result for 3-uniform hypergraphs is as follows. Fix an integer r >= 4 and 0<p<1. Suppose that H is an n-vertex triple system with r|n and the following two properties: * for every graph G with V(G)=V(H), at least p proportion of the triangles in G are also edges of H, * for every vertex x of H, the link graph of x is a quasirandom graph with density at le…
Let $G=(V,E)$ and $H$ be two graphs. Packing problem is to find in $G$ the largest number of independent subgraphs each of which is isomorphic to $H$. Let $U\subset{V}$. If the graph $G-U$ has no subgraph isomorphic to $H$, $U$ is a cover of $G$. Covering problem is to find the smallest set $U$. The vertex-disjoint tree packing was not sufficiently discussed in literature but has its applications in data encryption and in communication networks such as multi-cast routing protocol design. In this paper, we give the kind of $(k+1)$-connected graph $G'$ into which we can pack independently the su…
We say that a graph $G$ has a perfect $H$-packing if there exists a set of vertex-disjoint copies of $H$ which cover all the vertices in $G$. The seminal Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem characterises the minimum degree that ensures a graph $G$ contains a perfect $K_r$-packing. Balogh, Kostochka and Treglown proposed a degree sequence version of the Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem which, if true, gives a strengthening of the Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem. In this paper we prove this conjecture asymptotically. Another fundamental result in the area is the Alon--Yuster theorem which gives a minimum degree condit…
For an $m$-cycle $C$, an inside $m$-cycle of $C$ is a cycle on the same vertex set, that is edge-disjoint from $C$. In an $m$-cycle system, $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{C})$, if inside $m$-cycles can be chosen -one for each cycle- to form another $m$-cycle system, then $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{C})$ is called an almost $2$-perfect $m$-cycle system. Almost $2$-perfect cycle systems can be considered as generalisations of $2$-perfect cycle systems. Cycle packings are generalisations of cycle systems that allow to have leaves after decomposition. In this paper, we prove that an almost $2$-perfect maximu…
A perfect star packing in a graph G is a spanning subgraph of G whose every component is isomorphic to the star graph $K_{1,3}$. A perfect star packing of a fullerene graph G is of type P0 if all the centers of stars lie on hexagons of G. Many fullerene graphs arise from smaller fullerene graphs by applying some transformations. In this paper, we introduce two transformations for fullerene graphs that have perfect star packing of type P0 and examine some characteristics of the graphs obtained from this transformation.
What conditions ensure that a graph G contains some given spanning subgraph H? The most famous examples of results of this kind are probably Dirac's theorem on Hamilton cycles and Tutte's theorem on perfect matchings. Perfect matchings are generalized by perfect F-packings, where instead of covering all the vertices of G by disjoint edges, we want to cover G by disjoint copies of a (small) graph F. It is unlikely that there is a characterization of all graphs G which contain a perfect F-packing, so as in the case of Dirac's theorem it makes sense to study conditions on the minimum degree of G …
In this work we consider a straightforward linear programming formulation of the recently introduced $\{k\}$-packing function problem in graphs, for each fixed value of the positive integer number $k$. We analyse a special relation between the case $ k = 1$ and $ k \geq 2$ and give a sufficient condition for optimality ---the perfection--- of the closed neighbourhood matrix $N[G]$ of the input graph $G$. We begin a structural study of graphs satisfying this condition. In particular, we look for a characterization of graphs that have perfect closed neighbourhood matrices which involves the prop…
In this paper, we study the complexity of two types of digraph packing problems: perfect out-forests problem and Steiner cycle packing problem. For the perfect out-forest problem, we prove that it is NP-hard to decide whether a given strong digraph contains a 1-perfect out-forest. However, when restricted to a semicomplete digraph $D$, the problem of deciding whether $D$ contains an $i$-perfect out-forest becomes polynomial-time solvable, where $i\in \{0,1\}$. We also prove that it is NP-hard to find a 0-perfect out-forest of maximum size in a connected acyclic digraph, and it is NP-hard to fi…
By rectangle packing we mean putting a set of rectangles into an enclosing rectangle, without any overlapping. We begin with perfect rectangle packing problems, then prove two continuity properties for parallel rectangle packing problems, and discuss how they might be used to obtain negative results for perfect rectangle packing problems.
We conjecture that every oriented graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $δ^+ (G) , δ^- (G) \geq 5n/12$ contains the square of a Hamilton cycle. We also give a conjectural bound on the minimum semidegree which ensures a perfect packing of transitive triangles in an oriented graph. A link between Ramsey numbers and perfect packings of transitive tournaments is also considered.
We consider perfect secret key generation for a ``pairwise independent network'' model in which every pair of terminals share a random binary string, with the strings shared by distinct terminal pairs being mutually independent. The terminals are then allowed to communicate interactively over a public noiseless channel of unlimited capacity. All the terminals as well as an eavesdropper observe this communication. The objective is to generate a perfect secret key shared by a given set of terminals at the largest rate possible, and concealed from the eavesdropper. First, we show how the notion o…
Let $G$ and $H$ be $k$-graphs ($k$-uniform hypergraphs); then a perfect $H$-packing in $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of $H$ in $G$ which together cover every vertex of $G$. For any fixed $H$ let $δ(H, n)$ be the minimum $δ$ such that any $k$-graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree $δ(G) \geq δ$ contains a perfect $H$-packing. The problem of determining $δ(H, n)$ has been widely studied for graphs (i.e. $2$-graphs), but little is known for $k \geq 3$. Here we determine the asymptotic value of $δ(H, n)$ for all complete $k$-partite $k$-graphs $H$, as well as a wide class …
Let $H$ be an induced subgraph of the torus $C_k^m$. We show that when $k \ge 3$ is even and $|V(H)|$ divides some power of $k$, then for sufficiently large $n$ the torus $C_k^n$ has a perfect vertex-packing with induced copies of $H$. On the other hand, disproving a conjecture of Gruslys, we show that when $k$ is odd and not a prime power, then there exists $H$ such that $|V(H)|$ divides some power of $k$, but there is no $n$ such that $C_k^n$ has a perfect vertex-packing with copies of $H$. We also disprove a conjecture of Gruslys, Leader and Tan by exhibiting a subgraph $H$ of the $k$-dimen…
We say that a (di)graph $G$ has a perfect $H$-packing if there exists a set of vertex-disjoint copies of $H$ which cover all the vertices in $G$. The seminal Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem characterises the minimum degree that ensures a graph $G$ contains a perfect $K_r$-packing. In this paper we prove the following analogue for directed graphs: Suppose that $T$ is a tournament on $r$ vertices and $G$ is a digraph of sufficiently large order $n$ where $r$ divides $n$. If $G$ has minimum in- and outdegree at least $ (1-1/r)n$ then $G$ contains a perfect $T$-packing. In the case when $T$ is a cyclic …
An oriented graph is a directed graph which can be obtained from a simple undirected graph by orienting its edges. In this paper we show that any oriented graph G on n vertices with minimum indegree and outdegree at least (1/2-o(1))n contains a packing of cyclic triangles covering all but at most 3 vertices. This almost answers a question of Cuckler and Yuster and is best possible, since for n = 3 mod 18 there is a tournament with no perfect triangle packing and with all indegrees and outdegrees (n-1)/2 or (n-1)/2 \pm 1. Under the same hypotheses, we also show that one can embed any prescribed…
We define and solve the toric version of the symplectic ball packing problem, in the sense of listing all 2n-dimensional symplectic-toric manifolds which admit a perfect packing by balls embedded in a symplectic and torus equivariant fashion. In order to do this we first describe a problem in geometric-combinatorics which is equivalent to the toric symplectic ball packing problem. Then we solve this problem using arguments from Convex Geometry and Delzant theory. Applications to symplectic blowing-up are also presented, and some further questions are raised in the last section.
A fundamental result of Kühn and Osthus [The minimum degree threshold for perfect graph packings, Combinatorica, 2009] determines up to an additive constant the minimum degree threshold that forces a graph to contain a perfect H-tiling. We prove a degree sequence version of this result which allows for a significant number of vertices to have lower degree.
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n(G)$ and vertex set $V(G)$. Given a set $S\subseteq V(G)$, we define the external neighbourhood of $S$ as the set $N_e(S)$ of all vertices in $V(G)\setminus S$ having at least one neighbour in $S$. The differential of $S$ is defined to be $\partial(S)=|N_e(S)|-|S|$. In this paper, we introduce the study of the $2$-packing differential of a graph, which we define as $\partial_{2p}(G)=\max\{\partial(S): S\subseteq V(G) \text{ is a }2\text{-packing}\}.$ We show that the $2$-packing differential is closely related to several graph parameters, including the packing num…
We introduce and study the 1-planar packing problem: Given $k$ graphs with $n$ vertices $G_1, \dots, G_k$, find a 1-planar graph that contains the given graphs as edge-disjoint spanning subgraphs. We mainly focus on the case when each $G_i$ is a tree and $k=3$. We prove that a triple consisting of three caterpillars or of two caterpillars and a path may not admit a 1-planar packing, while two paths and a special type of caterpillar always have one. We then study 1-planar packings with few crossings and prove that three paths (resp. cycles) admit a 1-planar packing with at most seven (resp. fou…
We say that a $k$-uniform hypergraph $C$ is a Hamilton cycle of type $\ell$, for some $1\le \ell \le k$, if there exists a cyclic ordering of the vertices of $C$ such that every edge consists of $k$ consecutive vertices and for every pair of consecutive edges $E_{i-1},E_i$ in $C$ (in the natural ordering of the edges) we have $|E_{i-1}-E_i|=\ell$. We prove that for $\ell \le k\le 2\ell$, with high probability almost all edges of a random $k$-uniform hypergraph $H(n,p,k)$ with $p(n)\gg \log^2 n/n$ can be decomposed into edge disjoint type $\ell$ Hamilton cycles. We also provide sufficient condi…
Consider the random graph process $\{G_t\}_{t\geq 0}$. For $k\geq 3$ let $G_{t}^{(k)}$ denote the $k$-core of $G_t$ and let $τ_k$ be the minimum $t$ such that the $k$-core of $G_t$ is nonempty. It is well known that w.h.p. for $G_{τ_k}^{(k)}$ has linear size while it is believed to be Hamiltonian. Bollobás, Cooper, Fenner and Frieze further conjectured that w.h.p. $G_{t}^{(k)}$ spans $\lfloor \frac{k-1}{2} \rfloor$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles plus, when $k$ is even, a perfect matching for $t\geq τ_k$. We prove that w.h.p.\@ if $k$ is odd then $G_{t}^{(k)}$ spans $\frac{k-3}{2}$ edge disjoint…
The celebrated Hajnal-Szemerédi theorem gives the precise minimum degree threshold that forces a graph to contain a perfect K_k-packing. Fischer's conjecture states that the analogous result holds for all multipartite graphs except for those formed by a single construction. Recently, we deduced an approximate version of this conjecture from new results on perfect matchings in hypergraphs. In this paper, we apply a stability analysis to the extremal cases of this argument, thus showing that the exact conjecture holds for any sufficiently large graph.
Over recent years there has been much interest in both Turán and Ramsey properties of vertex ordered graphs. In this paper we initiate the study of embedding spanning structures into vertex ordered graphs. In particular, we introduce a general framework for approaching the problem of determining the minimum degree threshold for forcing a perfect $H$-tiling in an ordered graph. In the (unordered) graph setting, this problem was resolved by Kühn and Osthus [The minimum degree threshold for perfect graph packings, Combinatorica, 2009]. We use our general framework to resolve the perfect $H$-tilin…
In this paper we extend a classical theorem of Corrádi and Hajnal into the setting of sparse random graphs. We show that if $p(n) \gg (\log n / n)^{1/2}$, then asymptotically almost surely every subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree at least $(2/3 + o(1))np$ contains a triangle packing that covers all but at most $O(p^{-2})$ vertices. Moreover, the assumption on $p$ is optimal up to the $(\log n)^{1/2}$ factor and the presence of the set of $O(p^{-2})$ uncovered vertices is indispensable. The main ingredient in the proof, which might be of independent interest, is an embedding theorem which…
The triangle graph of a graph $G$, denoted by ${\cal T}(G)$, is the graph whose vertices represent the triangles ($K_3$ subgraphs) of $G$, and two vertices of ${\cal T}(G)$ are adjacent if and only if the corresponding triangles share an edge. In this paper, we characterize graphs whose triangle graph is a cycle and then extend the result to obtain a characterization of $C_n$-free triangle graphs. As a consequence, we give a forbidden subgraph characterization of graphs $G$ for which ${\cal T}(G)$ is a tree, a chordal graph, or a perfect graph. For the class of graphs whose triangle graph is p…
A $λ$-fold $r$-packing (multiple radius-$r$ covering) in a Hamming metric space is a code $C$ such that the radius-$r$ balls centered in $C$ cover each vertex of the space by not more (not less, respectively) than $λ$ times. The well-known $r$-error-correcting codes correspond to the case $λ=1$, while in general multifold $r$-packing are related with list decodable codes. We (a) propose asymptotic bounds for the maximum size of a $q$-ary $2$-fold $1$-packing as $q$ grows; (b) prove that a $q$-ary distance-$2$ MDS code of length $n$ is an optimal $n$-fold $1$-packing if $q\ge 2n$; (c) derive an…
A fundamental question in graph theory is to establish conditions that ensure a graph contains certain spanning subgraphs. Two well-known examples are Tutte's theorem on perfect matchings and Dirac's theorem on Hamilton cycles. Generalizations of Dirac's theorem, and related matching and packing problems for hypergraphs, have received much attention in recent years. New tools such as the absorbing method and regularity method have helped produce many new results, and yet some fundamental problems in the area remain unsolved. We survey recent developments on Dirac-type problems along with the m…
Inspired by a question of Yannakakis on the Vertex Packing polytope of perfect graphs, we study the Clique-Stable Set Separation in a non-hereditary subclass of perfect graphs. A cut (B,W) of G (a bipartition of V(G)) separates a clique K and a stable set S if $K\subseteq B$ and $S\subseteq W$. A Clique-Stable Set Separator is a family of cuts such that for every clique K, and for every stable set S disjoint from K, there exists a cut in the family that separates K and S. Given a class of graphs, the question is to know whether every graph of the class admits a Clique-Stable Set Separator cont…
If C is a clutter with n vertices and q edges whose clutter matrix has column vectors V={v1,...,vq}, we call C an Ehrhart clutter if {(v1,1),...,(vq,1)} is a Hilbert basis. Letting A(P) be the Ehrhart ring of P=conv(V), we are able to show that if A is the clutter matrix of a uniform, unmixed MFMC clutter C, then C is an Ehrhart clutter and in this case we provide sharp bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of A(P). Motivated by the Conforti-Cornuejols conjecture on packing problems, we conjecture that if C is both ideal and the clique clutter of a perfect graph, then C has the MFMC pro…
