Toroidal obscuration is a keystone of AGN unification. There is now direct evidence for the torus emission in infrared, and possibly water masers. Here I summarize the torus properties, its possible relation to the immediate molecular environment of the AGN and present some speculations on how it might evolve with the AGN luminosity.
This paper presents unique adaptive optics images at 3.5 and 4.8 microns of the central arcsec in the AGN of NGC1068. They enlight the presence of hot to warm dust close to the central engine of the AGN. At a radius around 40 pc, the dust is clearly contained within a disc-like structure perpendicular to the ionizing cone axis. These observations support AGN dusty/molecular torus modeling.
We performed imaging on 49 type 2 Seyfert galaxies in 6 near- and mid-infrared bands (1-10$μ$m). We are separating the contribution of the torus from the host galaxy by radial profile fitting techniques and we will compare the observed spectral energy distributions with theoretical models of torus emission to constrain geometrical and physical parameters.
We investigate the linear theory of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at the interface between a partially ionized dusty outflow and the ambient material analytically. We model the interaction as a multifluid system in a planar geometry. The unstable modes are independent from the charge polarity of the dust particles. Although our results show a stabilizing effect for charged dust particles, the growth time scale of the growing modes gradually becomes independent of the mass or charge of the dust particles when the magnetic field strength increases. We show that growth time scale decreases with in…
Geometrical and physical properties of dusty tori of Seyfert nuclei probed by the water vapor maser emission at 22 GHz are discussed. We assume that the dusty torus has a simple cylindrical form and the maser emission can be detected only when we observe the torus from almost edge-on views. The observed low frequency of occurrence of the water vapor maser emission (less than 10 percent) suggests that the torus is a vertically thin cylinder whose outer radius between a few pc and ~ 10 pc. However, the observed masing regions are concentrated in the inner 1 pc regions of the torus. This property…
A geometrically thick dusty torus in NGC 1068 has been unambiguously resolved by an infrared interferometry telescope. This implies clouds composing the dusty torus are undergoing supersonic collisions with each other. We show that the collisions form strong non-relativistic shocks, which accelerate populations of relativistic electrons. Torus reprocesses emission from accretion disk into infrared band. We show that the energy density of the infrared photons inside the torus is much higher than that of the magnetic field in the clouds and the seed photons of inverse Compton scattering are main…
We propose a new diagnostic of the ``dusty torus'' model for Seyfert nuclei. Dust grains in the torus are heated by the nuclear continuum, and reradiate mostly in the mid-infrared wavelengths. From the torus geometry, it is predicted that the emission at lambda < 10 micron has strong dependence on the viewing angle. Since the dependence is predicted to be insignificant at lambda > 10 micron, we study the flux ratio between 3.5 micron (L band) and 25 micron; R(L,25) = log [(nu_3.5 um S_nu_3.5 um)/(nu_25 um S_nu_25 um)]. In three different samples (optically selected, X-ray selected, and infrare…
Context: We investigate mid-infrared and X-ray properties of the dusty torus invoked in the unification scenario for active galactic nuclei. Aims: We use the relation between mid IR and hard X-ray luminosities to constrain the geometry and physical state of the dusty torus. Methods: We present new VISIR observations of 17 nearby AGN and combine these with our earlier VISIR sample of 8 Seyfert galaxies. Combining these observations with X-ray data from the literature we study the correlation between their mid IR and hard X-ray luminosities. Results: A statistically highly significant correlatio…
We report on the result of our high quality spectropolarimetric observation for the narrow-line region in a nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy, Mrk 573, by the Subaru Telescope. The polarized flux spectrum of Mrk 573 shows not only prominent scattered broad H$α$ emission but also various narrow forbidden emission lines. We find that the measured polarization degree of the observed forbidden emission lines is positively correlated with the ionization potential of the corresponding ions and the critical density of the corresponding transitions. We discuss some possible origins of these correlations, and th…
Unified schemes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) require an obscuring dusty torus around the central engine. Torus sizes of hundreds of parsecs were deduced from early theoretical modeling efforts, but high-resolution IR observations now show that the torus size is no more than a few parsecs. This conflict is resolved when the clumpy nature of the torus is taken into account. The compact torus may be best understood when identified with the dusty, optically thick region of the wind coming off the central accretion disk.
We report 0.8-4.5 micron SpeX spectroscopy of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk1239. The spectrum is outstanding because the nuclear continuum emission in the near-infrared is dominated by a strong bump of emission peaking at 2.2 micron, with a strength not reported before in an AGN. A comparison of the Mrk1239 spectrum to that of Ark564 allowed us to conclude that the continuum is strongly reddened by E(B-V)=0.54. The excess of emission, confirmed by aperture photometry and additional NIR spectroscopy, follows a simple blackbody curve at T=1200 K. This suggest that we may be observing dire…
Deep surveys of {\em Chandra} and {\em HST} (Hubble Space Telescope) show that active galactic nucleus (AGN) populations are changing with hard X-ray luminosities. This arises an interesting question whether the dusty torus is evolving with the central engines. We assemble a sample of 50 radio-quiet PG quasars to tackle this problem. The covering factors of the dusty tori can be estimated from the multiwavelength continuum. We find they are strongly correlated with the hard X-ray luminosity. Interestingly this correlation agrees with the fraction of type II AGNs discovered by {\em Chandra} and…
We determine the properties of the stellar torus that we showed in a previous paper to result as a product of two merging black holes. If the surrounding stellar cluster is as massive as the binary black hole, the torque acting on the stars ejects a fraction which extracts all the binary's angular momentum on scales of ~10^7 yr, and a geometrically thick torus remains. In the present article we show that a certain fraction of the stars has winds, shaped into elongated tails by the central radiation pressure, which are optically thick for line of sights aligned with them. These stars are suffic…
We present an analysis of the emission line property and the broad band spectral energy distribution of the ultra-luminous infrared Type II quasar Q132+058. The optical and ultraviolet emission lines show four distinct components: a LINER-like component at the systematic velocity, a heavily reddened HII-like component blueshifted by about 400 km/s, and two broad components blueshifted by about 400 km/s and 1900 km/s, respectively. The emission line ratios suggest that broad components are produced in dense and alpha-enriched outflows with a metalicity of 3-5 Zsun and a density of n_H ~ 10^7 cm…
We present XMM-Newton observations of AXJ0341.4-4453, a mildly reddened A_V<7 QSO at a redshift of z=0.672. The XMM-Newton spectrum shows a large obscuring column N_H~10^23 cm^{-2} corresponding to A_V~70, in agreement with previous results based on the lower limit of the ASCA hardness ratio. The X-ray spectrum is represented by a 'scattering' model with Gamma~2.0 with the scattered power-law normalization being a few per cent of the hard component. No FeK line is detected with a 90 per cent upper limit on its equivalent width of ~360eV. The large discrepancy between the column density observe…
We present VLBA observations of water maser emission associated with the star-forming region IRAS 21391+5802, which is embedded in a bright rimmed cometary globule in IC1396. The angular resolution of the maps is about 0.8 mas, corresponding to a spatial resolution of about 0.6 AU, at an estimated distance of 750 pc. Proper motions are derived for 10 maser features identified consistently over three epochs, which were separated by intervals of about one month. The masers appear in four groups, which are aligned linearly on the sky, roughly along a northeast-southwest direction, with a total se…
Unified schemes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) require an obscuring dusty torus around the central engine. The compact sizes (only a few pc) determined in recent high-resolution observations require that the obscuring matter be clumpy and located inside the region where the black-hole gravity dominates over the galactic bulge. This location is in line with the scenario depicting the torus as the region of the clumpy wind coming off the accretion disk in which the clouds are dusty and optically thick. We study here the outflow scenario within the framework of hydromagnetic disk winds, incorpor…
We report high angular-resolution (~1") CO J=3--2 interferometric mapping, using the Submillimeter Array (SMA), of IRAS22036+5306 (I22036), a bipolar pre-planetary nebula (PPN) with knotty jets discovered in our HST SNAPshot survey of young PPNs. In addition, we have obtained supporting lower-resolution (~10") CO and 13CO J=1-0 observations with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) interferometer, as well as optical long-slit echelle spectra at the Palomar Observatory. The CO J=3-2 observations show the presence of a very fast (~220 km/s), highly collimated, massive (0.03 Msun) bipolar ou…
A star forms when a cloud of dust and gas collapses. It is generally believed that this collapse first produces a flattened rotating disk, through which matter is fed onto the embryonic star at the center of the disk. When the temperature and density at the center of the star pass a critical threshold, thermonuclear fusion begins. The remaining disk, which can still contain up to 0.3 times the mass of the star, is then sculpted and eventually dissipated by the radiation and wind from the newborn star. Unfortunately this picture of the structure and evolution of the disk remains speculative bec…
From extensive radiative transfer calculations we find that clumpy torus models with \No \about 5--15 dusty clouds along radial equatorial rays successfully explain AGN infrared observations. The dust has standard Galactic composition, with individual cloud optical depth \tV \about 30--100 at visual. The models naturally explain the observed behavior of the 10\mic silicate feature, in particular the lack of deep absorption features in AGN of any type. The weak 10\mic emission feature tentatively detected in type 2 QSO can be reproduced if in these sources \No drops to \about 2 or \tV exceeds \…
Radio galaxies characteristically have strong Lya emission lines. However, a few have Lya equivalent widths that are substantially weaker in relation to other emission lines. One in particular was studied by Dey etal (1995), MG 1019+0535 (z=2.765). We report on our reduction of Infrared Space Observatory (ISO}) data in the 160 micron-band for this galaxy. We also compile information on two other high redshift active galaxies with weak Lya lines, the radio galaxy TXS 0211-122, and the AGN-starburst galaxy F 10214+4724, to provide a small weak-Lya line sample. IRAS plus ISO data show that F 1021…
The collapse of young massive stars or the coalescence of a black hole-neutron star binary is expected to give rise to a black hole-torus system. When the torus is strongly magnetized, the black hole produces electron-positron outflow along open magnetic field-lines. Through curvature radiation in gaps, this outflow rapidly develops into a $e^\pmγ$-wind, which is ultra-relativistic and of low comoving density, proposed here as a possible input to GRB fireball models.
We present 12.8 microns images of the core of NGC 1068 obtained with the BURST mode of the VLT/VISIR. We trace structures under the diffraction limit of one UT and we investigate the link between dust in the vicinity of the central engine of NGC 1068, recently resolved by interferometry with MIDI, and more extended structures. This step is mandatory for a multi-scale understanding of the sources of mid-infrared emission in AGNs. A speckle processing of VISIR BURST mode images was performed to extract very low spatial-frequency visibilities, first considering the full field of VISIR BURST mode …
We assemble a sample consisting of 66 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from literature and the {\em XMM-Newton} archive in order to investigate the origin of the 6.4 keV narrow iron K$α$ line (NIKAL). The X-ray Baldwin effect of the NIKAL is confirmed in this sample. We find the equivalent width ($EW$) of the NIKAL is more strongly inversely correlated with Eddington ratio ($\ce$) than the 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity. Our sample favors the origin from the dusty torus and the X-ray Baldwin effect is caused by the changing opening angle of the dusty torus. The relation $EW-\ce$ can be derived from a …
We present interferometric observations of $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $J$=2$-$1 emission from the butterfly-shaped, young planetary nebula NGC 6302. The high angular resolution and high sensitivity achieved in our observations allow us to resolve the nebula into two distinct kinematic components: (1) a massive expanding torus seen almost edge-on and oriented in the North-South direction, roughly perpendicular to the optical nebula axis. The torus exhibits very complex and fragmentated structure; (2) high velocity molecular knots moving at high velocity, higher than 20 \kms, and located in the opt…
We present N-band spectro-interferometric observations of the red supergiant WOH G64 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using MIDI at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The location of WOH G64 on the H-R diagram based on the previously estimated luminosities is in serious disagreement with the current stellar evolution theory. The dust envelope around WOH G64 has been spatially resolved with a baseline of ~60 m--the first MIDI observations to resolve an individual stellar source in an extragalactic system. The observed N-band visibilities show a slight decrease from 8 to 10 micro…
We discuss a clumpy model of obscuring dusty tori around AGN. Cloud-cloud collisions lead to an effective viscosity and a geometrically thick accretion disk, which has the required properties of a torus. Accretion in the combined gravitational potential of central black hole and stellar cluster generates free energy, which is dissipated in collisions, and maintains the thickness of the torus. A quantitative treatment for the torus in the prototypical Seyfert 2 nucleus of NGC 1068 together with a radiative transfer calculation for NIR re-emission from the torus is presented.
We present the results of global three dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic simulations of black hole accretion flows. We focus on the dependence of numerical results on the gas temperature Tout supplied from the outer region. General relativistic effects are taken into account using the pseudo-Newtonian potential. We ignore the radiative cooling of the accreting gas. The initial state is a torus whose density maximum is at 35rs or 50rs from the gravitating center, where rs is the Schwarzschild radius. The torus is initially threaded by a weak azimuthal magnetic field. We found that mass accretion…
We present the first VLBI maps of H2O maser emission (lambda 1.3cm) in the nucleus of the Circinus Galaxy, constructed from data obtained with the Australia Telescope Long Baseline Array. The maser emission traces a warped, edge-on accretion disk between radii of 0.11+/-0.02 and ~0.40 pc, as well as a wide-angle outflow that extends up to ~1 pc from the estimated disk center. The disk rotation is close to Keplerian (v varies as 1/sqrt(r)), the maximum detected rotation speed is 260 km/s, and the inferred central mass is 1.7+/-0.3 x 10^6 solar masses. The outflowing masers are irregularly distr…
