Colour and coarseness of skin are visually different. When image processing is involved in the skin analysis, it is important to quantitatively evaluate such differences using texture features. In this paper, we discuss a texture analysis and measurements based on a statistical approach to the pattern recognition. Grain size and anisotropy are evaluated with proper diagrams. The possibility to determine the presence of pattern defects is also discussed.
Skin recognition is used in many applications ranging from algorithms for face detection, hand gesture analysis, and to objectionable image filtering. In this work a skin recognition system was developed and tested. While many skin segmentation algorithms relay on skin color, our work relies on both skin color and texture features (features derives from the GLCM) to give a better and more efficient recognition accuracy of skin textures. We used feed forward neural networks to classify input textures images to be skin or non skin textures. The system gave very encouraging results during the neu…

This paper summarizes the method used in our submission to Task 1 of the International Skin Imaging Collaboration's (ISIC) Skin Lesion Analysis Towards Melanoma Detection challenge held in 2018. We used a fully automated method to accurately segment lesion boundaries from dermoscopic images. A U-net deep learning network is trained on publicly available data from ISIC. We introduce the use of intensity, color, and texture enhancement operations as pre-processing steps and morphological operations and contour identification as post-processing steps.
Lesion segmentation from the surrounding skin is the first task for developing automatic Computer-Aided Diagnosis of skin cancer. Variant features of lesion like uneven distribution of color, irregular shape, border and texture make this task challenging. The contribution of this paper is to present and compare two different approaches to skin lesion segmentation. The first approach uses watershed, while the second approach uses mean-shift. Pre-processing steps were performed in both approaches for removing hair and dark borders of microscopic images. The Evaluation of the proposed approaches …
In this paper, a reliable method for detecting human faces in color images is proposed. This system firstly detects skin color in YCgCr and YIQ color space, then filters binary texture and the result is morphological processed, finally converts skin tone to the preferred skin color configured by users in YIQ color space. The real-time adjusting circuit is implemented and some of simulation results are given out. Experimental results demonstrate that the method has achieved high rates and low false positives, another advantage is its simplicity and minor computational costs.
In this paper, an efficient skin detection system is proposed. The algorithm is based on a very fast efficient pre-processing step utilizing the concept of ternary conversion in order to identify candidate windows and subsequently, a novel local two-stage diffusion method which has F-score accuracy of 0.5978 on SDD dataset. The pre-processing step has been proven to be useful to boost the speed of the system by eliminating 82% of an image in average. This is obtained by keeping the true positive rate above 98%. In addition, a novel segmentation algorithm is also designed to process candidate w…

Skin colour detection is frequently been used for searching people, face detection, pornographic filtering and hand tracking. The presence of skin or non-skin in digital image can be determined by manipulating pixels colour or pixels texture. The main problem in skin colour detection is to represent the skin colour distribution model that is invariant or least sensitive to changes in illumination condition. Another problem comes from the fact that many objects in the real world may possess almost similar skin-tone colour such as wood, leather, skin-coloured clothing, hair and sand. Moreover, s…
In this paper, a novel approach for automatic segmentation and classification of skin lesions is proposed. Initially, skin images are filtered to remove unwanted hairs and noise and then the segmentation process is carried out to extract lesion areas. For segmentation, a region growing method is applied by automatic initialization of seed points. The segmentation performance is measured with different well known measures and the results are appreciable. Subsequently, the extracted lesion areas are represented by color and texture features. SVM and k-NN classifiers are used along with their fus…

Patterns and textures are defining characteristics of many natural objects: a shirt can be striped, the wings of a butterfly can be veined, and the skin of an animal can be scaly. Aiming at supporting this analytical dimension in image understanding, we address the challenging problem of describing textures with semantic attributes. We identify a rich vocabulary of forty-seven texture terms and use them to describe a large dataset of patterns collected in the wild. The resulting Describable Textures Dataset (DTD) is the basis to seek for the best texture representation for recognizing describab…

Melanoma is amongst most aggressive types of cancer. However, it is highly curable if detected in its early stages. Prescreening of suspicious moles and lesions for malignancy is of great importance. Detection can be done by images captured by standard cameras, which are more preferable due to low cost and availability. One important step in computerized evaluation of skin lesions is accurate detection of lesion region, i.e. segmentation of an image into two regions as lesion and normal skin. Accurate segmentation can be challenging due to burdens such as illumination variation and low contras…
Statistical methods are usually applied in the processing of digital images for the analysis of the textures displayed by them. Aiming to evaluate the urbanization of a given location from satellite or aerial images, here we consider a simple processing to distinguish in them the 'urban' from the 'rural' texture. The method is based on the mean values and the standard deviations of the colour tones of image pixels. The processing of the input images allows to obtain some maps from which a quantitative evaluation of the textures can be obtained.

Segmentation of skin lesions is considered as an important step in computer aided diagnosis (CAD) for automated melanoma diagnosis. In recent years, segmentation methods based on fully convolutional networks (FCN) have achieved great success in general images. This success is primarily due to the leveraging of large labelled datasets to learn features that correspond to the shallow appearance as well as the deep semantics of the images. However, the dependence on large dataset does not translate well into medical images. To improve the FCN performance for skin lesion segmentations, researchers…

This paper investigates the effectiveness of an expert system based on K-nearest neighbors algorithm for laser speckle image sampling applied to the early detection of diabetes. With the latest developments in artificial intelligent guided laser speckle imaging technologies, it may be possible to optimise laser parameters, such as wavelength, energy level and image texture measures in association with a suitable AI technique to interact effectively with the subcellular properties of a skin tissue to detect early signs of diabetes. The new approach is potentially more effective than the classic…
Many stochastic processes are defined on special geometrical objects like spheres and cones. We describe how tools from harmonic analysis, i.e. Fourier analysis on groups, can be used to investigate probability density functions (pdfs) on groups and homogeneous spaces. We consider the special case of the Lorentz group SU(1,1) and the unit disk with its hyperbolic geometry, but the procedure can be generalized to a much wider class of Lie-groups. We mainly concentrate on the Mehler-Fock transform which is the radial part of the Fourier transform on the disk. Some of the characteristic features …

From The late 90th, "Skin Detection" becomes one of the major problems in image processing. If "Skin Detection" will be done in high accuracy, it can be used in many cases as face recognition, Human Tracking and etc. Until now so many methods were presented for solving this problem. In most of these methods, color space was used to extract feature vector for classifying pixels, but the most of them have not good accuracy in detecting types of skin. The proposed approach in this paper is based on "Color based image retrieval" (CBIR) technique. In this method, first by means of CBIR method and i…
Regularization functionals that lower level set boundary length when used with L^1 fidelity functionals on signal de-noising on images create artifacts. These are (i) rounding of corners, (ii) shrinking of radii, (iii) shrinking of cusps, and (iv) non-smoothing of staircasing. Regularity functionals based upon total curvature of level set boundaries do not create artifacts (i) and (ii). An adjusted fidelity term based on the flat norm on the current (a distributional graph) representing the density of curvature of level sets boundaries can minimize (iii) by weighting the position of a cusp. A …

Such a computation can also achieve information compaction for subsequent processing stages. By using a pulse order encoding scheme motivated by dendritic pulse interaction, we will show that a power…

To make matters worse, many categories only contain very few samples, posing great challenges to conventional machine learning algorithms and even human experts. Inspired by the recent success of Few-Shot Learning (FSL) in natural image classification, we propose to apply FSL to skin disease identification to address the extreme scarcity of training sample problem. However, directly applying FSL to this task…
In image processing, a segmentation is a process of partitioning an image into multiple sets of pixels, that are defined as super-pixels. Each super-pixel is characterized by a label or parameter. Here, we are proposing a method for determining the super-pixels based on the thresholding of the image. This approach is quite useful for studying the images showing vesicular textures.

Face detection is one of the challenging tasks in computer vision. Human face detection plays an essential role in the first stage of face processing applications such as face recognition, face tracking, image database management, etc. In these applications, face objects often come from an inconsequential part of images that contain variations, namely different illumination, poses, and occlusion. These variations can decrease face detection rate noticeably. Most existing face detection approaches are not accurate, as they have not been able to resolve unstructured images due to large appearanc…
Rendering scenes with a high-quality human face from arbitrary viewpoints is a practical and useful technique for many real-world applications. Recently, Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), a rendering technique that uses neural networks to approximate classical ray tracing, have been considered as one of the promising approaches for synthesizing novel views from a sparse set of images. We find that NeRF can render new views while maintaining geometric consistency, but it does not properly maintain skin details, such as moles and pores. These details are important particularly for faces because whe…

Texture classification is an important and challenging problem in many image processing applications. While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) achieved significant successes for image classification, texture classification remains a difficult problem since textures usually do not contain enough information regarding the shape of object. In image processing, texture classification has been traditionally studied well with spectral analyses which exploit repeated structures in many textures. Since CNNs process images as-is in the spatial domain whereas spectral analyses process images in the fr…
