Within the Hamiltonian approach in Coulomb gauge the ghost and gluon propagators are determined from a variational solution of the Yang-Mills Schroedinger equation showing both gluon and heavy quark confinement. The continuum results are in good agreement with lattice data. The ghost form factor is identified as the dielectric function of the Yang-Mills vacuum and a connection between the Gribov-Zwanziger scenario and the dual Meissner effect is established. The topological susceptibility is calculated.
The topological susceptibility is calculated within the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge, using the vacuum wave functional previously determined by a variational solution of the Yang-Mills Schroedinger equation. The numerical result agrees qualitatively with the predictions of lattice simulations.
The functional approach to Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory is considered within the standard, second order, formalism. The Dyson-Schwinger equations and Slavnov-Taylor identities concerning the two-point functions are derived explicitly and one-loop perturbative results are presented.
In the Hamiltonian approach to Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory, the functional Schroedinger equation is solved variationally resulting in a set of coupled Dyson-Schwinger equations. These equations are solved self-consistently in the subcritical regime defined by infrared finite form factors. It is shown that the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the Coulomb form factor fails to have a solution in the critical regime where all form factors have infrared divergent power laws.
The vacuum wave functional of Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory is determined within the variational principle and used to calculate various Green functions and observables. The results show that heavy quarks are confined by a linearly rising potential and gluons cannot propagate over large distances. The 't Hooft loop shows a perimeter law and thus also indicates confinement.
We study the infrared behavior of the effective Coulomb potential in lattice SU(3) Yang-Mills theory in the Coulomb gauge. We use lattices up to a size of 48^4 and three values of the inverse coupling, beta=5.8, 6.0 and 6.2. While finite-volume effects are hardly visible in the effective Coulomb potential, scaling violations and a strong dependence on the choice of Gribov copy are observed. We obtain bounds for the Coulomb string tension that are in agreement with Zwanziger's inequality relating the Coulomb string tension to the Wilson string tension.
We consider the Hamiltonian formulation of Yang-Mills theory in the Coulomb gauge and apply the recently developed technique of Hamiltonian flows. We formulate a flow equation for the color Coulomb potential which allows for a scaling solution that results in an almost linearly rising confining potential.
We study trial states modelling the heavy quark-antiquark ground state in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. A state describing the flux tube between quarks as a thin string of glue is found to be a poor description of the continuum ground state; the infinitesimal thickness of the string leads to UV artifacts which suppress the overlap with the ground state. Contrastingly, a state which surrounds the quarks with non-abelian Coulomb fields is found to have a good overlap with the ground state for all charge separations. In fact, the overlap increases as the lattice regulator is removed. This opens up the…
A general method to treat non-Gaussian vacuum wave functionals in the Hamiltonian formulation of a quantum field theory is presented. By means of Dyson--Schwinger techniques, the static Green functions are expressed in terms of the kernels arising in the Taylor expansion of the exponent of the vacuum wave functional. These kernels are then determined by minimizing the vacuum expectation value of the Hamiltonian. The method is applied to Yang--Mills theory in Coulomb gauge, using a vacuum wave functional whose exponent contains up to quartic terms in the gauge field. An estimate of the cubic an…
The Coulomb-gauge ghost propagator, and the color-Coulomb potential, are computed in an ensemble of configurations derived from our recently proposed Yang-Mills vacuum wavefunctional in 2+1 dimensions. The results are compared to the corresponding values obtained by standard Monte Carlo simulations in three Euclidean dimensions. The agreement is quite striking for the Coulomb-gauge ghost propagator. The color-Coulomb potential rises linearly at large distances, but its determination suffers from rather large statistical fluctuations, due to configurations with very low values of $μ_0$, the low…
The Slavnov-Taylor identities of Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory are derived from the (standard, second order) functional formalism. It is shown how these identities form closed sets from which one can in principle fully determine the Green's functions involving the temporal component of the gauge field without approximation, given appropriate input.
We discuss planar scattering amplitudes on the Coulomb branch of N=4 super Yang-Mills. The vacuum expectation values on the Coulomb branch can be used to regulate infrared divergences. We argue that this has a number of conceptual as well as practical advantages over dimensional regularisation.
We derive a new functional renormalization group equation for Hamiltonian Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge. The flow equations for the static gluon and ghost propagators are solved under the assumption of ghost dominance within different diagrammatic approximations. The results are compared to those obtained in the variational approach and the reliability of the approximations is discussed.
The continuum Yang-Mills functional integral within the first order formalism and in Coulomb gauge is studied. In particular, the temporal zero-modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator are explicitly accounted for. It is shown that the treatment of these zero-modes results in the constraint that the total color charge of the system vanishes at all times. Further, it is argued that the functional integral is effectively fully gauge-fixed once Gauss' law has been resolved in Coulomb gauge.
A new functional renormalization group equation for Hamiltonian Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge is presented and solved for the static gluon and ghost propagators under the assumption of ghost dominance. The results are compared to those obtained in the variational approach.
The non-perturbative domain of QCD contains confinement, chiral symmetry breaking, and the bound state spectrum. For the calculation of the latter, the Coulomb gauge is particularly well-suited. Access to these non-perturbative properties should be possible by means of the Green's functions. However, Coulomb gauge is also very involved, and thus hard to tackle. We introduce a novel BRST-type operator r, and show that the left-hand side of Gauss' law is r-exact. We investigate a possible truncation scheme of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in first-order formalism for the propagators based on an …
The Yang-Mills Schrödinger equation is solved in Coulomb gauge for the vacuum by the variational principle using an ansatz for the wave functional, which is strongly peaked at the Gribov horizon. A coupled set of Schwinger-Dyson equations for the gluon and ghost propagators in the Yang-Mills vacuum as well as for the curvature of gauge orbit space is derived and solved in one-loop approximation. We find an infrared suppressed gluon propagator, an infrared singular ghost propagator and a almost linearly rising confinement potential.
Perturbative Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory within the first order formalism is considered. Using a differential equation technique and dimensional regularization, analytic results for both the ultraviolet divergent and finite parts of the two-point functions at one-loop order are derived. It is shown how the non-ultraviolet divergent parts of the results are finite at spacelike momenta with kinematical singularities on the light-cone and subsequent branch cuts extending into the timelike region.
I briefly review results obtained within the variational Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge and confront them with recent lattice data. The variational approach is extended to non-Gaussian wave functionals including three- and four-gluon kernels in the exponential of the vacuum wave functional and used to calculate the three-gluon vertex. A new functional renormalization group flow equation for Hamiltonian Yang--Mills theory in Coulomb gauge is solved for the gluon and ghost propagator under the assumption of ghost dominance. The results are compared to those obtained i…
The Coulomb branch of the potential between two static colored sources is calculated for the Yang-Mills theory using the electric Schroedinger representation.
We investigate the dependence of the Yang-Mills wave functional in Coulomb gauge on the Faddeev-Popov determinant. We use a Gaussian wave functional multiplied by an arbitrary power of the Faddeev-Popov determinant. We show, that within the resummation of one-loop diagrams the stationary vacuum energy is independent of the power of the Faddeev-Popov determinant and, furthermore, the wave functional becomes field-independent in the infrared, describing a stochastic vacuum. Our investigations show, that the infrared limit is rather robust against details of the variational ansätze for the Yang-M…
We study the Hamiltonian approach to 1+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge, considering both the pure Coulomb gauge and the gauge where in addition the remaining constant gauge field is restricted to the Cartan algebra. We evaluate the corresponding Faddeev-Popov determinants, resolve Gauss' law and derive the Hamiltonians, which differ in both gauges due to additional zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov kernel in the pure Coulomb gauge. By Gauss' law the zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov kernel constrain the physical wave functionals to zero colour charge states. We solve the Schroedin…
The canonical recursive Dyson--Schwinger equations for the three-gluon and ghost-gluon vertices are solved numerically. The employed truncation includes several previously neglected diagrams and includes back-coupling effects. We find an infrared finite ghost-gluon vertex and an infrared diverging three-gluon vertex. We also compare our results with those obtained in previous calculations, where bare vertices were used in the loop diagrams.
The infrared behaviour of gluon and ghost propagators, ghost-gluon vertex and three-gluon vertex is investigated for both the covariant Landau and the non-covariant Coulomb gauge. Assuming infrared ghost dominance, we find a unique infrared exponent in the d=4 Landau gauge, while in the d=3+1 Coulomb gauge we find two different infrared exponents. We also show that a finite dressing of the ghost-gluon vertex has no influence on the infrared exponents. Finally, we determine the infrared behaviour of the three-gluon vertex analytically and calculate it numerically at the symmetric point in the C…
The spatial 't Hooft loop, which is a disorder parameter dual to the temporal Wilson loop, is calculated using the nonperturbative Yang-Mills vacuum wave functional determined previously by a variational solution of the Yang-Mills Schroedinger equation in Coulomb gauge. It is shown, that this wave functional yields indeed a perimeter law for large spatial 't Hooft loops signaling confinement.
We consider a variational approach to the finite temperature Yang-Mills theory in the Coulomb gauge. The partition function is computed in the ensemble of glueballs and quasi-gluons which emerge as eigenstates of the Coulomb gauge Hamiltonian. We compute the energy density and pressure and compare with results of lattice computations for both SU(2) and SU(3). The emergence of a phase transition is discussed.
The bound system composed of the Yang monopole coupled to a particle of the isospin by the SU(2) and Coulomb interaction is considered. The generalized Runge--Lenz vector and the SO(6) group of hidden symmetry are established. It is also shown that the group of hidden symmetry make it possible to calculate the spectrum of the system by a pure algebraic method.
Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory is considered within the first order formalism. It is shown that the action is invariant under both the standard BRS transform and an additional component. The Ward-Takahashi identity arising from this non-standard transform is shown to be automatically satisfied by the equations of motion.
The Dyson-Schwinger equation for the ghost-gluon vertex of the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge is solved at one-loop level using as input the non-perturbative ghost and gluon propagators previously determined within the variational approach. The obtained ghost-gluon vertex is IR finite but IR enhanced compared to the bare one by 15% to 25%, depending on the kinematical momentum regime.
The Yang-Mills Schrödinger equation is solved in Coulomb gauge for the vacuum by the variational principle using an ansatz for the wave functional, which is strongly peaked at the Gribov horizon. We find an infrared suppressed gluon propagator, an infrared singular ghost propagator and an almost linearly rising confinement potential. Using these solutions we calculate the electric field of static color charge distributions relevant for mesons and baryons.
I consider the problem of generalising the Abelian Coulomb gauge condition to the non-Abelian Yang-Mills theory, with an arbitrary compact and semi-simple gauge group. It is shown that a straightforward generalisation exists, which reduces the Gauss law into a form involving the gauge potentials only, but not their time derivatives. The existence and uniqueness of the generalised Coulomb gauge is shown to depend on an elliptic linear partial differential equation for a Lie-algebra valued quantity, which defines the gauge transform by means of which the generalised Coulomb gauge condition is re…
Using the second Hopf map, we perform the reduction of the eight-dimensional (pseudo)spherical (Higgs)oscillator to a five-dimensional system interacting with a Yang monopole. Then, using a standard trick, we obtain, from the latter system, the pseudospherical and spherical generalizations of the Yang-Coulomb system (the five dimensional analog of MICZ-Kepler system). We present the whole set of its constants of motions, including the hidden symmetry generators given by the analog of Runge-Lenz vector. In the same way, starting from the eight-dimensional anisotropic inharmonic Higgs oscillator…
We study the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge in Rayleigh-Schroedinger perturbation theory. The static gluon and ghost propagator as well as the potential between static colour sources are calculated to one-loop order. Furthermore, the one-loop $β$-function is calculated from both the ghost-gluon vertex and the static potential and found to agree with the result of covariant perturbation theory.
A new functional renormalization group equation for Hamiltonian Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge is presented and solved for the static gluon and ghost propagators under the assumption of ghost dominance. The results are compared to those obtained in the variational approach.
The variational approach to the Hamilton formulation of Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge developed by the present authors previously is applied to Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions and is confronted with the existing lattice data. We show that the resulting Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSE) yield consistent solutions in 2+1 dimensions only for infrared divergent ghost form factor and gluon energy. The obtained numerical solutions of the DSE reproduce the analytic infrared results and are in satisfactory agreement with the existing lattice date in the whole momentum range.
Within the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge the ghost and gluon propagators are determined from a variational solution of the Yang-Mills Schroedinger equation showing both gluon and heavy quark confinement. The continuum results are in good agreement with lattice data. The ghost form factor is identified as the dielectric function of the Yang--Mills vacuum and the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement scenario is shown to imply the dual Meissner effect. The topological susceptibility is calculated.
The Coulomb gauge in QCD is the only explicitly unitary gauge. But it suffers from energy-divergences which means that it is not rigorously well-defined. One way to define it unambiguously is as the limit of a gauge interpolating between the Landau gauge and the Coulomb gauge. This interpolating gauge is characterised by a parameter theta and the Coulomb gauge is obtained in the limit theta tends to zero. We study the renormalization of this theta-gauge for all values of theta, and note some special features of it.
We compute the force between oppositely charged W bosons in the large N limit of Yang-Mills with 16 supercharges broken to SU(N) x U(1) by a finite Higgs vev. We clarify some issues regarding Wilson line computations and show that there is a regime in which the force between W bosons is independent of separation distance.
Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory within the first order formalism is considered with a view to deriving the propagator Dyson-Schwinger equations. The first order formalism is studied with special emphasis on the BRS invariance and it is found that there exists two forms of invariance - invariance under the standard BRS transform and under a second, non-standard transform. The field equations of motion and symmetries are derived explicitly and certain exact relations that simplify the formalism are presented. It is shown that the Ward-Takahashi identity arising from invariance under the non-stan…
It is pointed out that the Parke-Taylor or maximally helicity violating amplitudes in the pure Yang-Mills can, after some specifications, be interpreted as amplitudes of scattering of massive vector bosons in the Higgs-Yang-Mills system.
We review earlier proposals for $E_8$ family unification, and discuss why recent work of Kovner and Shifman on condensates in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories suggests the reconsideration of $E_8$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills as a family unification theory.
Two aspects of the color charge in Coulomb gauge continuum Yang-Mills theory are discussed. The first aspect is the existence of a conserved and vanishing total charge exhibited within the first order functional formalism. The second aspect is the closure of the set of Slavnov-Taylor identities in the second order functional formalism, such that the exact solution for temporal Green's functions is in principle possible and thereby preserving the color charge.
I discuss various situations in which perturbative expansions are used in Yang-Mills theories with asymptotic freedom and establish the limits of its applicability.
In this series of three papers, we generalize the derivation of dual photons and monopoles by Polyakov, and Banks, Myerson and Kogut, to obtain approximative models of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. The papers take three different representations as their starting points: the representation as a BF Yang-Mills theory, the spin foam representation and the plaquette representation. The derivations are based on stationary phase approximations. In this first article, we cast 3- and 4-dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the form of a lattice BF Yang-Mills theory. In several steps, the expectation…
We present the current status of ongoing efforts to use functional methods, Dyson-Schwinger equations and functional renormalization group equations, for the description of the infrared regime of nonabelian (pure) gauge theories in the Coulomb gauge. In particular, we present a new determination of the color-Coulomb potential with the help of the functional renormalization group that results in an almost linearly rising potential between static color charges at large spatial distances.
A generalization of the two-dimensional Yang-Mills and generalized Yang-Mills theory is introduced in which the building B-F theory is nonlocal in the auxiliary field. The classical and quantum properties of this nonlocal generalization are investigated and it is shown that for large gauge groups, there exist a simple correspondence between the properties a nonlocal theory and its corresponding local theory.
I review results recently obtained within the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge. In particular, I will present results for the ghost and gluon propagators and compare these with recent lattice data. Furthermore, I will give an interpretation of the inverse of the ghost form factor as the dielectric function of the Yang-Mills vacuum. Our ansatz for the vacuum wave functional will be checked by means of functional renormalization group flow equations, which are solved for the gluon energy and the ghost form factor. Finally, we calculate the Wilson loop for the vacuum wav…
Using an infinite number of fields, we construct actions for D=4 self-dual Yang-Mills with manifest Lorentz invariance and for D=10 super-Yang-Mills with manifest super-Poincaré invariance. These actions are generalizations of the covariant action for the D=2 chiral boson which was first studied by McClain, Wu, Yu and Wotzasek.
The 5D Kepler system possesses many interesting properties. This system is superintegrable and also with a $su(2)$ nonAbelian monopole interaction (Yang-Coulomb monopole). This system is also related to a 8D isotropic harmonic oscillator by a Hurwitz transformation. We introduce a new superintegrable Hamiltonian that consists in a 5D Kepler system with new terms of Smorodinsky-Winternitz type. We obtain the integrals of motion of this systems. They generate a quadratic algebra with structure constants involving the Casimir operator of a $so(4)$ Lie algebra. We also show that this system remain…
An explicit canonical transformation is constructed to relate the physical subspace of Yang-Mills theory to the phase space of the ADM variables of general relativity. This maps 3+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory to local evolution of metrics on 3 manifolds.
The deconfinement phase transition of SU(2) Yang--Mills theory is investigated in the Hamiltonian approach in Coulomb gauge assuming a quasi-particle picture for the grand canonical gluon ensemble. The thermal equilibrium state is found by minimizing the free energy with respect to the quasi-gluon energy. Above the deconfinement phase transition the ghost form factor remains infrared divergent but its infrared exponent is approximately halved, while the gluon energy, being infrared divergent in the confined phase, becomes infrared finite in the deconfined phase. For the effective gluon mass we…
We will discuss an integrable structure for weakly coupled superconformal Yang-Mills theories, describe certain equivalences for the Yangian algebra, and fill a technical gap in our previous study of this subject.
In this article, in the framework of an analytical approach and with help of the generalized version of the Hurwitz transformation the five--dimensional bound system composed of the Yang monople coupled to a particle of the isospin by SU(2) and Coulomb interaction is constructed from the eight-dimensional quantum oscillator. The generalized Runge-Lentz vector and the SO(6) group of the hidden symmetry are established. It is also shown that group of hidden symmetry makes it possible to calculate the spectrum of system by a pure algebraic method.
The planar Yang-Mills theory in three spatial dimensions is examined in a particular representation which explicitly embodies factorization. The effective planar Yang-Mills theory Hamiltonian is constructed in this representation.
