We present abundances of C, N, O, F, Na, and Fe in six giant stars of the tidally disrupted globular cluster NGC 6712. The abundances were derived by comparing synthetic spectra with high resolution infrared spectra obtained with the Phoenix spectrograph on the Gemini South telescope. We find large star-to-star abundance variations of the elements C, N, O, F, and Na. NGC 6712 and M4 are the only globular clusters in which F has been measured in more than two stars, and both clusters reveal F abundance variations whose amplitude is comparable to, or exceeds, that of O, a pattern which may be produced in M > 5M_sun AGB stars. Within the limited samples, the F abundance in globular clusters is lower than in field and bulge stars at the same metallicity. NGC 6712 and Pal 5 are tidally disrupted globular clusters whose red giant members exhibit O and Na abundance variations not seen in comparable metallicity field stars. Therefore, globular clusters like NGC 6712 and Pal 5 cannot contribute many field stars and/or field stars do not form in environments with chemical enrichment histories like that of NGC 6712 and Pal 5. Although our sample size is small, from the amplitude of the O and Na abundance variations, we infer a large initial cluster mass and tentatively confirm that NGC 6712 was once one of the most massive globular clusters in our Galaxy.
In this paper we develop the new semi-analitical model of a tidally perturbed or tidally disrupted star proposed recently by two of us. This model is effectively a one dimensional Lagrangian model and it can be evolved numerically much faster that the conventional 3D models. A self-consistent derivation of the dynamical equations of the model is performed and several important theorems about the dynamics of the model are proved without any particular assumption about the equation of state of the stellar gas. The dynamical equations are solved numerically for the case of $n=1.5$ polytropic star…
The infrared excess around the white dwarf G29-38 can be explained by emission from an opaque flat ring of dust with an inner radius 0.14 of the radius of the Sun and an outer radius approximately equal to the Sun's. This ring lies within the Roche region of the white dwarf where an asteroid could have been tidally destroyed, producing a system reminiscent of Saturn's rings. Accretion onto the white dwarf from this circumstellar dust can explain the observed calcium abundance in the atmosphere of G29-38. Either as a bombardment by a series of asteroids or because of one large disruption, the t…
Sticky particle calculations indicate that a coherent structure, a dispersion ring, forms when a cloud on a low angular momentum orbit passes close to the dynamical center of an isothermal sphere containing a central point mass. The cloud is tidally stretched and differentially wrapped, and dissipation in shocks organizes the gas into a precessing off-set elliptical ring which can persist for many rotation periods. The morphology and kinematics of the circumnuclear disk (CND) between 2 and 5 pc and the Northern arm in the inner 1 pc are well-represented by such structures. In the case of the N…
The evolution of the stellar debris after tidal disruption due to the super massive black hole's tidal force is difficult to solve numerically because of the large dynamical range of the problem. We developed an SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) - TVD (Total Variation Diminishing) hybrid code in which the SPH is used to cover a widely spread debris and the TVD is used to compute the stream collision more accurately. While the code in the present form is not sufficient to obtain desired resoultion, it could provide a useful tool in studying the aftermath of the stellar disruption by a massi…
We explore the possibility that extended disks, such as that recently discovered in M31, are the result of a single dwarf (10^9--10^10 Msun) satellite merger. We carry out N-body simulations of dwarf NFW halos with embedded spheriodal stellar components on co-planar, prograde orbits in a M31-like host galaxy. As the orbit decays due to dynamical friction and the system is disrupted, the stellar particles form an extended, exponential disk-like structure that spans the radial range 30--200 kpc once they have relaxed. The disk scale-length correlates with the initial extent of the stellar compon…
We describe a three-dimensional simulation of a $1 M_{\odot}$ solar-type star approaching a $10^{6} M_{\odot}$ black hole on a parabolic orbit with a pericenter distance well within the tidal radius. While falling towards the black hole, the star is not only stretched along the orbital direction but even more severely compressed at right angles to the orbit. The overbearing degree of compression achieved shortly after pericenter leads to the production of strong shocks which largely homogenize the temperature profile of the star, resulting in surface temperatures comparable to the initial temp…
A new semi-analytical model of a star evolving in a tidal field is proposed. The model is a generalization of the so-called 'affine' stellar model. In our model the star is composed of elliptical shells with different parameters and different orientations, depending on time and on the radial Lagrangian coordinate of the shell. The evolution equations of this model are derived from the virial relations under certain assumptions, and the integrals of motion are identified. It is shown that the evolution equations can be deduced from a variational principle. The evolution equations are solved num…
We study the evolution of the galactic globular cluster system to determine its initial mass-function and the fraction of halo stars that could have come from disrupted globular clusters. We study the cluster evolution under the influence of two destruction mechanisms: Two-body relaxation and dynamical friction. New results of N-body simulations are used for the lifetimes of clusters dissolving under the influence of two-body relaxation. Two different mass-functions are studied: A gaussian initial distribution in log(M_C) with mean mass and scatter similar to what one observes for the galactic…
We study the rate of escape of stars (``evaporation'') from tidally-limited postcollapse globular clusters having a power-law distribution of stellar masses. We use a multi-mass Fokker-Planck code and assume a steady tidal field. Stellar-dynamical processes cause the inner parts of the cluster to expand, which in turn causes stars to overflow the tidal boundary. Mass loss by stellar evolution is assumed to be unimportant in these later evolutionary stages. The fraction of the cluster mass lost per half-mass relaxation time ($\trh$) is roughly constant, in agreement with simple homologous model…
The evolution of tidally truncated globular clusters is investigated by integrating two-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation that allows the development of velocity anisotropy. We start from the isotropic Plummer model with tidal cut off and followed the evolution through the corecollapse. The heating by three-binary is included to obtain the evolution past the corecollapse. The anisotropy in velocity dispersion develops during the precollapse evolution. However, the anisotropy becomes highly depressed during the post-collapse evolution because of rapid loss of radial orbits. Maximum radial anis…
We report on high resolution Echelle spectroscopy of 20 giant stars in the Galactic old open clusters NGC 6791 obtained with Hydra at the WIYN telescope. High precision radial velocity allow us to isolate 15 {\it bona fide} cluster members. From 10 of them we derive a global [M/H]=+0.39$\pm$0.05. We therefore confirm that NGC 6791 is extremely metal rich, exhibits a few marginally sub-solar abundance ratios, and within the resolution of our spectra does not show evidences of spread in metal abundance. With these new data we re-derive the cluster fundamental parameters suggesting that it is abo…
We report the discovery of a transient source in the central regions of galaxy cluster Abell 267. The object, which we call "PALS1", was found in a survey aimed at identifying highly-magnified Lyman-break galaxies in the fields of intervening rich clusters. At discovery, the source had U>24.7 (2-sigma; AB), g=21.96, and very blue g-r and r-i colors; i.e., PALS1 was a U-band drop-out, characteristic of star-forming galaxies and quasars at z~3. However, three months later the source had faded by more than three magnitudes. Further observations showed a continued decline in luminosity, to R>26.4 …
We discuss the first part of a survey for RR Lyrae variables in the galactic halo that is being made with the 1m Schmidt telescope at the Venezuelan National Observatory. So far the survey has discovered 497 variables in 380 sq. degrees, lying from 4 to 60 kpc from the Sun. It has detected three statistically significant clumps of variables, which shows that outer halo does not have smooth density contours. One clump is located at 50 kpc from the galactic center, and it is probably tidal debris from the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. A second structure, at 17 kpc from the galactic center…
Suggestive evidence has accumulated that intermediate mass black holes (IMBH) exist in some globular clusters. As stars diffuse in the cluster, some will inevitable wander sufficiently close to the hole that they suffer tidal disruption. An attractive feature of the IMBH hypothesis is its potential to disrupt not only solar-type stars but also compact white dwarf stars. Attention is given to the fate of white dwarfs that approach the hole close enough to be disrupted and compressed to such extent that explosive nuclear burning may be triggered. Precise modeling of the dynamics of the encounter…
We investigate effects of time evolution of a rich cluster of galaxies on its member galactic halos in the standard cold dark matter (SCDM) universe using high resolution N-body simulations. We identify several hundred galactic halos within virial radius of our simulated cluster. We also find that a large number of halos have been tidally disrupted at z = 0. Therefore we improve a method of deriving merging history trees of galaxies taking account of tidally stripped galaxies.
Globular cluster populations of supergiant elliptical galaxies are known to vary widely, from extremely populous systems like that of UGC 9799, the centrally dominant galaxy in Abell 2052, to globular-cluster-poor galaxies such as NGC 5629 in Abell 2666. Here we propose that these variations point strongly to the existence of a population of globular clusters that are not bound to individual galaxies, but rather move freely throughout the cores of clusters of galaxies. Such intracluster globular clusters may have originated as tidally stripped debris from galaxy interactions and mergers, or al…
Despite the rapid observational progress in the study of young massive star clusters, the formation of globular clusters still remains poorly understood. Yet, it is emerging that globular cluster formation is intimately linked to the formation of the Galaxy. I discuss a generic scenario of the cluster formation within progenitor galaxies, based on the available observational constraints. The oldest clusters formed around redshift z = 7, but the process continued at least until z = 3. Because of their high density, globular clusters survived when their progenitor galaxies were disrupted by the …
According to the hypothesis that AGNs are massive black holes and the mass which feeds them is made of stars belonging to globular clusters frictionally decayed and tidally destroyed by the field of the central object, it is possible to give an estimate of the number and spectral characteristics of detectable gravitational wave impulses generated by the falling of such stars into the black hole. We find that the orbitating gravitational antenna LISA, should detect from 10 to 100 impulses per year.
The semi-analytic theory of tidal shocks proves to be a powerful tool to study tidal interactions of star clusters and satellite galaxies with their massive hosts. New models of the globular cluster evolution employ a combination of analytic estimates, solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation and direct N-body simulations. The models predict large destruction rates for the Galactic globular clusters. Those on the highly eccentric orbits around the Galactic center are much more likely to be disrupted than the ones on nearly circular orbits. The destruction rates are largely increased near the bu…
Most of the globular clusters in the main body of the Galactic halo were formed almost simultaneously. However, globular cluster formation in dwarf spheroidal galaxies appears to have extended over a significant fraction of a Hubble time. This suggests that the factors which suppressed late-time formation of globulars in the main body of the Galactic halo were not operative in dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Possibly the presence of significant numbers of ``young'' globulars at R_{GC} > 15 kpc can be accounted for by the assumption that many of these objects were formed in Sagittarius-like (but not…
The relics of building blocks that made stellar halo and bulge are yet to be discovered unless they were completely disrupted throughout the history of the Galaxy. Here we suggest that about 25% of the Milky Way globular clusters have characteristics of the remaining cores of these early building blocks rather than genuine star clusters. They are clearly distinct from other normal globular clusters in the presence of extended horizontal-branch and multiple stellar populations, in mass (brightness), and most importantly in orbital kinematics. Based on this result, a three-stage formation pictur…
We present a numerical study of the hydrodynamics in the final stages of inspiral of a black hole-neutron star binary, when the binary separation becomes comparable to the stellar radius. We use a Newtonian three-dimensional Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) code, and model the neutron star with a soft (adiabatic index Gamma=5/3) polytropic equation of state and the black hole as a Newtonian point mass which accretes matter via an absorbing boundary at the Schwarzschild radius. Our initial conditions correspond to tidally locked binaries in equilibrium, and we have explored configurations wi…
A massive (~10^2-10^4 Msun) black hole at the center of a globular cluster will tidally disrupt binaries that pass sufficiently close. Such an encounter results in the capture of one binary component by the black hole and ejection of the other star. A 10^3 Msun black hole disrupts one binary every 1-10 Myr; captured stars orbit with initial periods of days to decades. Although >~100 stars are captured in only 1 Gyr, the number with periods of <10 yr at any one time is probably less than 10, regulated by stellar interactions and tidal disruption by the black hole. Binary disruption and stellar …
We test the hypothesis that metal-poor globular clusters form within disk galaxies at redshifts z>3. Numerical simulations demonstrate that giant gas clouds, which are cold and dense enough to produce massive star clusters, assemble naturally in hierarchical models of galaxy formation at high redshift. Do model clusters evolve into observed globular clusters or are they disrupted before present as a result of the dynamical evolution? To address this question, we calculate the orbits of model clusters in the time-variable gravitational potential of a Milky Way-sized galaxy, using the outputs of…
The detection of stars in the process of being tidally removed from globular clusters and dwarf spheroidals in the Galaxy's halo provides a strong constraint on their mass to light ratios and on the extent of their possible dark matter halos. If a significant dark matter component existed either within or beyond the observed stellar distribution, then stars would not be removed. We use numerical simulations to study mass loss from two component star clusters orbiting within a deeper potential. We find a global upper limit on the mass to light ratios of globular clusters, M/L \lsim 2.5, and rul…
A revision of Stod\{'o}łkiewicz's Monte Carlo code is used to simulate evolution of large star clusters. A survey of the evolution of N-body systems influenced by the tidal field of a parent galaxy and by stellar evolution is presented. The results presented are in good agreement with theoretical expectations and the results of other methods (Fokker-Planck, Monte Carlo and N-body). The initial rapid mass loss, due to stellar evolution of the most massive stars, causes expansion of the whole cluster and eventually leads to the disruption of less bound systems ($W_0=3$). Models with larger $W_0$…
A catalog of 383 radial velocities for red giants in the globular cluster M22 has been compiled from the literature and from new observations accumulated between 1972 and 1994. This 22-year baseline is the longest available for any sample of globular cluster stars. Using 333 repeat velocities for 109 cluster members, we have carried out a search for spectroscopic binaries with periods in the range 0.2 -- 40 years and with mass ratios between 0.1 and 1.0. Although the velocities for these evolved stars show clear evidence for atmospheric motions, no star is convincingly found to exhibit a veloc…
The Sagittarius galaxy (Sgr), the closest satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, has survived for many orbits about the Galaxy. Extant numerical calculations modeled this galaxy as a system with a centrally-concentrated mass profile, following the light, and found that it should lose more than one-half of its mass every 2--4 orbits and be completely disrupted long before now. Apparently Sgr, and by implication other dSph galaxies, do not have a centrally-concentrated profile for their dark matter. We develop a model in which the stars of the Sgr dwarf are embedded in a constant-density dark matter…
We investigate a population of primordial binaries during the initial stage of evolution of a star cluster. For our calculations we assume that equal mass stars form rapidly in a tidally truncated gas cloud, that $\sim10$\% of the stars are in binaries and that the resulting star cluster undergoes an epoch of violent relaxation. We study the collisional interaction of the binaries and single stars, in particular, the ionization of the binaries and the energy exchange between binaries and single stars. We find that for large $N$ systems ($N > 10^3$) even the most violent beginning leaves the bi…
We demonstrate that there is a clear statistical correlation between the (X,Y,Z,V_r) phase-space distribution of the outer halo Galactic globular clusters (having 10 kpc <= R_GC <= 40 kpc) and the orbital path of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph), as derived by Ibata & Lewis. At least 4 of the sample of 35 globular clusters in this distance range were formerly members of the Sgr galaxy (at the 95 % confidence level), and are now distributed along the Sgr Stream, a giant tidal structure that surrounds the Milky Way. This is the first instance that a statistically significant st…
We study the escape rate, dN/dt, from clusters with different radii in a tidal field using analytical predictions and direct N-body simulations. We find that dN/dt depends on the ratio R=r_h/r_j, where r_h is the half-mass radius and r_j the radius of the zero-velocity surface. For R>0.05, the "tidal regime", there is almost no dependence of dN/dt on R. To first order this is because the fraction of escapers per relaxation time, t_rh, scales approximately as R^1.5, which cancels out the r_h^1.5 term in t_rh. For R<0.05, the "isolated regime", dN/dt scales as R^-1.5. Clusters that start with th…
We present the stellar main sequence luminosity function (LF) of the disrupted, low-mass, low-concentration globular cluster Palomar 5 and its well-defined tidal tails, which emanate from the cluster as a result of its tidal interaction with the Milky Way. The results of our deep (B ~ 24.5) wide-field photometry unequivocally indicate that preferentially fainter stars were removed from the cluster so that the LF of the cluster's main body exhibits a significant degree of flattening compared to other globular clusters. There is clear evidence of mass segregation, which is reflected in a radial …
The results of N-body simulations of the expulsion of residual gas from young globular clusters are presented. Globular clusters with a variety of initial masses, Galactocentric radii, concentration and initial mass function slope with star formation efficiencies (SFEs) below 50% were investigated. The residual gas in the clusters was simply treated as an external potential acting upon the star particles which was reduced in a number of ways to simulate the loss of the gas. The states of the clusters after ~50 Myr was compared to the results of Chernoff & Shapiro (1987) in order to estimate if…
We present a new parallel supercomputer implementation of the Monte-Carlo method for simulating the dynamical evolution of globular star clusters. Our method is based on a modified version of Henon's Monte-Carlo algorithm for solving the Fokker-Planck equation. Our code allows us to follow the evolution of a cluster containing up to 5x10^5 stars to core collapse in < 40 hours of computing time. In this paper we present the results of test calculations for clusters with equal-mass stars, starting from both Plummer and King model initial conditions. We consider isolated as well as tidally trunca…
The dynamics of stars in the inner regions of nearby globular clusters (GCs) such as G1 indicate the presence of central concentrated dark masses, and one would like to know whether these are indeed intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs). As the number of surrounding stars, and their motions, are roughly known, the capture rate can be estimated; the question then arises of whether the apparent quiescence of the nuclei of these GCs is compatible with the IMBH's presence. The role of debris from disrupted stars in activating quiescent nuclei of GCs is studied here employing three-dimensional hydr…
The distant globular cluster Palomar 13 has been found to have a very high mass-to-light ratio and its profile can be well fitted either by a King model with a tail, or with a NFW model. This cluster may be the first case of the many clumps predicted by CDM simulations that would not be disrupted by the galactic halo potential. We make the hypothesis that Pal 13 is made of neutralinos and run the DarkSuspect code to estimate the high-energy photon flux due to the annihilation of neutralinos through various channels in some benchmark scenarios. These low fluxes may be used as targets to be reac…
We present velocity dispersion measurements of 14 globular clusters in NGC 5128 (Centarus A) obtained with the MIKE echelle spectrograph on the 6.5m Magellan Clay telescope. These clusters are among the most luminous globular clusters in NGC 5128 and have velocity dispersions comparable to the most massive clusters known in the Local Group, ranging from 10 - 30 km/s. We describe in detail our cross-correlation measurements, as well as simulations to quantify the uncertainties. These 14 globular clusters are the brightest NGC 5128 globular clusters with surface photometry and structural paramet…
We present chemical abundances for Mg, Si, Ca and Fe for three red giants in the sparse globular cluster Terzan 7, physically associated to the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy (Sgr dSph), which is presently being tidally disrupted by the Milky Way. The data has been obtained with VLT-UVES and show a mean [Fe/H]=-0.57, with solar alpha content, mean [alpha/Fe]=-0.03. This enforces Ter 7's membership to the Sgr dSph system, which shows a similar pattern of abundance.
In this paper we address the issue of the origin of some observational properties of the galactic globular cluster system. After a preliminary study of some general properties of the main evolutionary processes, we investigate the evolution of systems of globular clusters located in a model of the Milky Way starting from different initial conditions. We study the role of the evolutionary processes in changing the spatial distribution and mass function of the cluster system, in establishing and/or preserving some of the observed correlations and trends between internal properties of globular cl…
This paper is concerned with collisionless aspects of the early evolution of model star clusters. The effects of mass loss through stellar evolution and of a steady tidal field are modelled using $N$-body simulations. Our results (which depend on the assumed initial structure and the mass spectrum) agree qualitatively with those of Chernoff \& Weinberg (1990), who used a Fokker-Planck model with a spherically symmetric tidal cutoff. For those systems which are disrupted, the lifetime to disruption generally exceeds that found by Chernoff \& Weinberg, sometimes by as much as an order of magnitu…
Stellar streams in galaxy halos are the natural consequence of a history of merging and accretion. We present evidence for a blue tidal stream of young stars in the nearest giant elliptical galaxy, NGC 5128 (Centaurus A). Using optical UBVR color maps, unsharp masking, and adaptive histogram equalization, we detect a blue arc in the northwest portion of the galaxy that traces a partial ellipse with an apocenter of 8 kpc. We also report the discovery of numerous young star clusters that are associated with the arc. The brightest of these clusters is spectroscopically confirmed, has an age of 35…
Satellite galaxies are tidally disrupted as they orbit the Milky Way. If dark matter (DM) experiences a stronger self-attraction than baryons, stars will preferentially gain rather than lose energy during tidal disruption leading to an enhancement in the trailing compared to the leading tidal stream. The Sgr dwarf galaxy is seen to have roughly equal streams, challenging models in which DM and baryons accelerate differently by more than 10%. Future observations and a better understanding of DM distribution should allow detection of equivalence violation at the percent level.
We have constructed synthetic color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for omega Cen and other massive globular clusters with apparently peculiar CMD morphology. Our population models, which adopt the most up-to-date input physics and parameters, show that the observed CMD of omega Cen can be reproduced by adopting (1) multimodal metallicity distribution function as derived from the observed color distribution of red-giant-branch (RGB) stars, and (2) an internal age-metallicty relation among the populations therein. Similar results were obtained for other massive globular clusters with bimodal horizont…
The discovery of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, which is being tidally disrupted by and merging with the Milky Way, supports the view that the halo of the Galaxy has been built up at least partially by the accretion of similar dwarf systems. The Sagittarius dwarf contains several distinct populations of stars, and includes M54 as its nucleus, which is the second most massive globular cluster associated with the Milky Way. The most massive globular cluster is omega Centauri, and here we report that omega Centauri also has several distinct stellar populations, as traced by red-giant-branch stars.…
We analyze the metallicity distributions of globular clusters belonging to 28 early-type galaxies in the survey of Kundu & Whitmore (2001). A Monte Carlo algorithm which simulates the chemical evolution of galaxies that grow hierarchically via dissipationless mergers is used to determine the most probable protogalactic mass function for each galaxy. Contrary to the claims of Kundu & Whitmore, we find that the observed metallicity distributions are in close agreement with the predictions of such hierarchical formation models. The mass spectrum of protogalactic fragments for the galaxies in our …
The globular clusters that we observe in galaxies may be only a fraction of the initial population. Among the evolutionary influences on the population is the destruction of globular clusters by tidal forces as the cluster moves through the field of influence of a disk, a bulge, and/or a putative nuclear component (black hole). We have conducted a series of N-body simulations of globular clusters on bound and marginally bound orbits through potentials that include black hole and spheroidal components. The degree of concentration of the spheroidal component can have a considerable impact on the…
Stellar models which incorporate simple diffusion or shear induced mixing are used to describe canonical extra mixing in low mass red giants of low and solar metallicity. These models are able to simultaneously explain the observed Li and CN abundance changes along upper red giant branch (RGB) in field low-metallicity stars and match photometry, rotation and carbon isotopic ratios for stars in the old open cluster M67. The shear mixing model requires that main sequence (MS) progenitors of upper RGB stars possessed rapidly rotating radiative cores and that specific angular momentum was conserve…
We probe the evolution of globular clusters that could form in giant molecular clouds within high-redshift galaxies. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the large and dense enough gas clouds assemble naturally in current hierarchical models of galaxy formation. These clouds are enriched with heavy elements from earlier stars and could produce star clusters in a similar way to nearby molecular clouds. The masses and sizes of the model clusters are in excellent agreement with the observations of young massive clusters. Do these model clusters evolve into globular clusters that we see in our a…
This work considers the idea of massive black holes being the constituents of the Galactic dark matter halo. It constrains the maximum black hole mass to $\mbh \sil 5 \times 10^4 \msun$ by examining their influence on the population of globular clusters in our Milky Way. In the adopted halo model, globular clusters are exposed to constant bombardment of halo objects on their orbits through the Galaxy and thus will steadily gain internal energy. Depending on the mass of these halo objects and the structural parameters of the globular clusters, they can be disrupted on time scales of a few billi…
We study the combined effects of relaxation, tidal heating and binary heating on globular cluster evolution, exploring the physical consequences of external effects and examining evolutionary trends in the Milky Way population. Our analysis demonstrates that heating on circular and low-eccentricity orbits can dominate cluster evolution. The results also predict rapid evolution on eccentric orbits either due to strong relaxation caused by the high densities needed for tidal limitation or due to efficient bulge shocking of low density clusters. The combination of effects leads to strong evolutio…
We systematically perform the merger simulation of black hole-neutron star (BH-NS) binaries in full general relativity, focusing on the case that the NS is tidally disrupted. We prepare BH-NS binaries in a quasicircular orbit as the initial condition in which the BH is modeled by a nonspinning moving puncture. For modeling the NS, we adopt the $Γ$-law equation of state with $Γ=2$ and the irrotational velocity field. We change the BH mass in the range $M_{\rm BH} \approx 3.3$--$4.6M_{\odot}$, while the rest mass of the NS is fixed to be $M_{*}=1.4 M_{\odot}$ (i.e., the NS mass $M_{\rm NS} \appr…
