We solve the Percus-Yevick equation in even dimensions by reducing it to a set of simple integro-differential equations. This work generalizes an approach we developed previously for hard discs. We numerically obtain both the pair correlation function and the virial coefficients for a fluid of hyper-spheres in dimensions $d=4,6$ and 8, and find good agreement with available exact results and Monte-Carlo simulations. This paper confirms the alternating character of the virial series for $d \ge 6$, and provides the first evidence for an alternating character for $d=4$. Moreover, we show that this sign alternation is due to the existence of a branch point on the negative real axis. It is this branch point that determines the radius of convergence of the virial series, whose value we determine explicitly for $d=4,6,8$. Our results complement, and are consistent with, a recent study in odd dimensions [R.D. Rohrmann et al., J. Chem. Phys. 129, 014510 (2008)].
The Percus-Yevick theory for monodisperse hard spheres gives very good results for the pressure and structure factor of the system in a whole range of densities that lie within the liquid phase. However, the equation seems to lead to a very unacceptable result beyond that region. Namely, the Percus-Yevick theory predicts a smooth behavior of the pressure that diverges only when the volume fraction $η$ approaches unity. Thus, within the theory there seems to be no indication for the termination of the liquid phase and the transition to a solid or to a glass. In the present article we study the …
We solve the Percus-Yevick equation in two dimensions by reducing it to a set of simple integral equations. We numerically obtain both the pair correlation function and the equation of state for a hard disc fluid and find good agreement with available Monte-Carlo calculations. The present method of resolution may be generalized to any even dimension.
The direct correlation function and the (static) structure factor for a seven-dimensional hard-sphere fluid are considered. Analytical results for these quantities are derived within the Percus-Yevick theory
By Wertheim-method the exact solution of the Percus-Yevick integral equation for a system of particles with the repulsive step potential interacting (collapsing hard spheres) is obtained. On the basis of this solution the state equation for the repulsive step potential is built and determined, that the Percus-Yevick equation does not show phase transition for collapsing hard spheres.
The fourth virial coefficient of additive hard-sphere mixtures, as predicted by the Percus-Yevick (PY) and hypernetted-chain (HNC) theories, is derived via the compressibility, virial, and chemical-potential routes, the outcomes being compared with exact results. Except in the case of the HNC compressibility route, the other five expressions exhibit a common structure involving the first three moments of the size distribution. In both theories the chemical-potential route is slightly better than the virial one and the best behavior is generally presented by the compressibility route. Moreover,…
Structural and thermodynamic properties of multicomponent hard-sphere fluids at odd dimensions have recently been derived in the framework of the rational function approximation (RFA) [Rohrmann and Santos, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{83}, 011201 (2011)]. It is demonstrated here that the RFA technique yields the exact solution of the Percus-Yevick (PY) closure to the Ornstein-Zernike (OZ) equation for binary mixtures at arbitrary odd dimensions. The proof relies mainly on the Fourier transforms $\hat{c}_{ij}(k)$ of the direct correlation functions defined by the OZ relation. From the analysis of the p…
Following the work of Leutheusser [Physica A 127, 667 (1984)], the solution to the Percus-Yevick equation for a seven-dimensional hard-sphere fluid is explicitly found. This allows the derivation of the equation of state for the fluid taking both the virial and the compressibility routes. An analysis of the virial coefficients and the determination of the radius of convergence of the virial series are carried out. Molecular dynamics simulations of the same system are also performed and a comparison between the simulation results for the compressibility factor and theoretical expressions for th…
The chemical potential of a hard-sphere fluid can be expressed in terms of the contact value of the radial distribution function of a solute particle with a diameter varying from zero to that of the solvent particles. Exploiting the explicit knowledge of such a contact value within the Percus--Yevick (PY) theory, and using standard thermodynamic relations, a hitherto unknown PY equation of state, $p/ρk_BT=-(9/η)\ln(1-η)-(16-31η)/2(1-η)^2$, is unveiled. This equation of state turns out to be better than the one obtained from the conventional virial route. Interpolations between the chemical-pot…
We discuss structural and thermodynamical properties of Baxter's adhesive hard sphere model within a class of closures which includes the Percus-Yevick (PY) one. The common feature of all these closures is to have a direct correlation function vanishing beyond a certain range, each closure being identified by a different approximation within the original square-well region. This allows a common analytical solution of the Ornstein-Zernike integral equation, with the cavity function playing a privileged role. A careful analytical treatment of the equation of state is reported. Numerical comparis…
As is well known, approximate integral equations for liquids, such as the hypernetted chain (HNC) and Percus--Yevick (PY) theories, are in general thermodynamically inconsistent in the sense that the macroscopic properties obtained from the spatial correlation functions depend on the route followed. In particular, the values of the fourth virial coefficient $B_4$ predicted by the HNC and PY approximations via the virial route differ from those obtained via the compressibility route. Despite this, it is shown in this paper that the value of $B_4$ obtained from the virial route in the HNC theory…
In order to investigate how the time-convolutionless mode-coupling theory (TMCT) recently proposed by Tokuyama can improve the critical point predicted by the ideal mode-coupling theory (MCT), the TMCT equations are numerically solved based on the Percus-Yevick static structure factor for hard spheres as a preliminary test. Then, the full numerical solutions are compared with those of MCT for different physical quantities, such as intermediate scattering functions and diffusion coefficients. Thus, the ergodic to nonergodic transition predicted by MCT is also found at the critical volume fracti…
Mode-coupling theory (MCT) constitutes one of the few first-principles-based approaches to describe the physics of the glass transition, but the theory's inherent approximations compromise its accuracy in the activated glassy regime. Here we show that microscopic generalized mode-coupling theory (GMCT), a recently proposed hierarchical framework to systematically improve upon standard MCT, provides a promising pathway toward a more accurate first-principles description of glassy dynamics. We present a comprehensive numerical analysis for Percus-Yevick hard spheres by performing explicitly wave…
We derive the Ornstein-Zernike equation for molecular crystals of axially symmetric particles and apply the Percus-Yevick approximation to this system. The one-particle orientational distribution function has a nontrivial dependence on the orientation and is needed as an input. Despite some differences, the Ornstein-Zernike equation for molecular crystals has a similar structure as for liquids. We solve both equations for hard ellipsoids on a sc lattice. Compared to molecular liquids, the tensorial orientational correlators exhibit less structure. However, depending on the lengths a and b of t…
The equation of state for five-dimensional hard hyperspheres arising as a weighted average of the Percus-Yevick compressibility (3/5) and virial (2/5) equations of state is considered. This Carnahan-Starling-like equation turns out to be extremely accurate, despite the fact that both Percus-Yevick equations of state are rather poor.
By Wertheim method the exact solution of the Percus-Yevick integral equation for a system of particles with the "repulsive step potential",interacting ("collapsing" hard spheres) is obtained. On the basis of this solution the state equation for the "repulsive step potential" is built and determined, that the Percus-Yevick equation does not show the Van der Waalse loop for "collapsing" hard spheres.
We represent the free energy functional by a diagrammatic series with tensorial coefficients indexed by powers of length scale. For hard cores, we obtain Percus' exact functional in one dimension and the Kierlik-Rosinberg form of fundamental measures theory in three dimensions. In five dimensions, the functional describes bulk fluids better than Percus-Yevick theory does. At planar walls density profiles oscillate with smaller periods than in lower dimensions. Our findings open up avenues for treating both more general high-dimensional systems, as well as three-dimensional mixtures via dimensi…
The structural properties of square-shoulder fluids are derived from the use of the rational function approximation method. The computation of both the radial distribution function and the static structure factor involves mostly analytical steps, requiring only the numerical solution of a single transcendental equation. The comparison with available simulation data and with numerical solutions of the Percus-Yevick and hypernetted-chain integral equations shows that the present approximation represents an improvement over the Percus-Yevick theory for this system and a reasonable compromise betw…
We apply connectedness percolation theory to fractal liquids of hard particles, and make use of a Percus-Yevick liquid state theory combined with a geometric connectivity criterion. We find that in fractal dimensions the percolation threshold interpolates continuously between integer-dimensional values, and that it decreases monotonically with increasing (fractal) dimension. The influence of hard-core interactions is only significant for dimensions below three. Finally, our theory incorrectly suggests that a percolation threshold is absent below about two dimensions, which we attribute to the …
Analytic approximations for the radial distribution function, the structure factor, and the equation of state of hard-core fluids in fractal dimension $d$ ($1 \leq d \leq 3$) are developed as heuristic interpolations from the knowledge of the exact and Percus-Yevick results for the hard-rod and hard-sphere fluids, respectively. In order to assess their value, such approximate results are compared with those of recent Monte Carlo simulations and numerical solutions of the Percus-Yevick equation for fractal dimension [M. Heinen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{115}, 097801 (2015)], a good agreem…
The chemical potentials of multicomponent fluids are derived in terms of the pair correlation functions for arbitrary number of components, interaction potentials, and dimensionality. The formally exact result is particularized to hard-sphere mixtures with zero or positive nonadditivity. As a simple application, the chemical potentials of three-dimensional additive hard-sphere mixtures are derived from the Percus-Yevick theory and the associated equation of state is obtained. This Percus-Yevick chemical-route equation of state is shown to be more accurate than the virial equation of state. An …
Monte Carlo simulations on the structural properties of ternary fluid mixtures of additive hard spheres are reported. The results are compared with those obtained from a recent analytical approximation [S. B. Yuste, A. Santos, and M. Lopez de Haro, J. Chem. Phys. 108, 3683 (1998)] to the radial distribution functions of hard-sphere mixtures and with the results derived from the solution of the Ornstein-Zernike integral equation with both the Martynov-Sarkisov and the Percus-Yevick closures. Very good agreement between the results of the first two approaches and simulation is observed, with a n…
The demixing transition of a binary fluid mixture of additive hard spheres is analyzed for different size asymmetries by starting from the exact low-density expansion of the pressure. Already within the second virial approximation the fluid separates into two phases of different composition with a lower consolute critical point. By successively incorporating the third, fourth, and fifth virial coefficients, the critical consolute point moves to higher values of the pressure and to lower values of the partial number fraction of the large spheres. When the exact low-density expansion of the pres…
Mixtures of hard hyperspheres in odd space dimensionalities are studied with an analytical approximation method. This technique is based on the so-called Rational Function Approximation and provides a procedure for evaluating equations of state, structure factors, radial distribution functions, and direct correlations functions of additive mixtures of hard hyperspheres with any number of components and in arbitrary odd-dimension space. The method gives the exact solution of the Ornstein--Zernike equation coupled with the Percus--Yevick closure, thus extending to arbitrary odd dimension the sol…
A recently derived method [R. D. Rohrmann and A. Santos, Phys. Rev. E. {\bf 76}, 051202 (2007)] to obtain the exact solution of the Percus-Yevick equation for a fluid of hard spheres in (odd) $d$ dimensions is used to investigate the convergence properties of the resulting virial series. This is done both for the virial and compressibility routes, in which the virial coefficients $B_j$ are expressed in terms of the solution of a set of $(d-1)/2$ coupled algebraic equations which become nonlinear for $d \geq 5$. Results have been derived up to $d=13$. A confirmation of the alternating character…
A method to obtain (approximate) analytical expressions for the radial distribution functions in a multicomponent mixture of additive hard spheres that was recently introduced is used to obtain the direct correlation functions and bridge functions in these systems. This method, which yields results practically equivalent to the Generalized Mean Spherical Approximation and includes thermodynamic consistency, is an alternative to the usual integral equation approaches and requires as input only the contact values of the radial distribution functions and the isothermal compressibility. Calculatio…
We develop an expansion for the Jacobian of the transformation from particle coordinates to collective coordinates. As a demonstration, we use the lowest order of the expansion in conjunction with a variational principle to obtain the Percus Yevick equation for a monodisperse hard sphere system and the Lebowitz equations for a polydisperse hard sphere system.
We use the Percus-Yevick approach in the chemical-potential route to evaluate the equation of state of hard hyperspheres in five dimensions. The evaluation requires the derivation of an analytical expression for the contact value of the pair distribution function between particles of the bulk fluid and a solute particle with arbitrary size. The equation of state is compared with those obtained from the conventional virial and compressibility thermodynamic routes and the associated virial coefficients are computed. The pressure calculated from all routes is exact up to third density order, but …
We solve the site-site Ornstein-Zernike equation using the Percus-Yevick closure for binary hard-sphere mixture. We calculate an excess chemical potential for the mixture's diameter ratios of 0.3, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.9, and at packing fraction of 0.49 using the analytical expression. Our numerical results are in good agreement with those in the literature.
The structural properties of single component fluids of hard hyperspheres in odd space dimensionalities $d$ are studied with an analytical approximation method that generalizes the Rational Function Approximation earlier introduced in the study of hard-sphere fluids [S. B. Yuste and A. Santos, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 43}, 5418 (1991)]. The theory makes use of the exact form of the radial distribution function to first order in density and extends it to finite density by assuming a rational form for a function defined in Laplace space, the coefficients being determined by simple physical requirements…
A recent paper [I. Klebanov et al. \emph{Mod. Phys. Lett. B} \textbf{22} (2008) 3153; arXiv:0712.0433] claims that the exact solution of the Percus-Yevick (PY) integral equation for a system of hard spheres plus a step potential is obtained. The aim of this paper is to show that Klebanov et al.'s result is incompatible with the PY equation since it violates two known cases: the low-density limit and the hard-sphere limit.
We derive an exact equation for density changes induced by a general external field that corrects the hydrostatic approximation where the local value of the field is adsorbed into a modified chemical potential. Using linear response theory to relate density changes self-consistently in different regions of space, we arrive at an integral equation for a hard sphere fluid that is exact in the limit of a slowly varying field or at low density and reduces to the accurate Percus-Yevick equation for a hard core field. This and related equations give accurate results for a wide variety of fields.
A simple recipe to derive the compressibility factor of a multicomponent mixture of d-dimensional additive hard spheres in terms of that of the one-component system is proposed. The recipe is based (i) on an exact condition that has to be satisfied in the special limit where one of the components corresponds to point particles; and (ii) on the form of the radial distribution functions at contact as obtained from the Percus-Yevick equation in the three-dimensional system. The proposal is examined for hard discs and hard spheres by comparison with well-known equations of state for these systems …
Percus showed that approximate theories for the structure of nonuniform hard sphere fluids can be generated by linear truncations of functional expansions of the nonuniform density rho (r) about that of an appropriately chosen uniform system. We consider the most general such truncation, which we refer to as the shifted linear response (SLR) equation, where the density response rho (r) to an external field phi (r) is expanded to linear order at each r about a different uniform system with a locally shifted chemical potential. Special cases include the Percus-Yevick (PY) approximation for nonun…
The coupling-parameter method, whereby an extra particle is progressively coupled to the rest of the particles, is applied to the sticky-hard-sphere fluid to obtain its equation of state in the so-called chemical-potential route ($μ$ route). As a consistency test, the results for one-dimensional sticky particles are shown to be exact. Results corresponding to the three-dimensional case (Baxter's model) are derived within the Percus-Yevick approximation by using different prescriptions for the dependence of the interaction potential of the extra particle on the coupling parameter. The critical …
Integral equation of pure liquids, combined with a new "scaling approximation" based on a corresponding states treatment of pair correlation functions, is used to evaluate approximate structure factors for colloidal fluids constituted of uncharged particles with polydispersity in size and energy parameters. Both hard spheres and Lennard-Jones interactions are considered. For polydisperse hard spheres, the scaling approximation is compared to theories utilized by small angle scattering experimentalists (decoupling approximation, local monodisperse approximation)and to the van der Waals one-flui…
The contact values $g_{ij}(σ_{ij})$ of the radial distribution functions of a $d$-dimensional mixture of (additive) hard spheres are considered. A `universality' assumption is put forward, according to which $g_{ij}(σ_{ij})=G(η, z_{ij})$, where $G$ is a common function for all the mixtures of the same dimensionality, regardless of the number of components, $η$ is the packing fraction of the mixture, and $z_{ij}$ is a dimensionless parameter that depends on the size distribution and the diameters of spheres $i$ and $j$. For $d=3$, this universality assumption holds for the contact values of the…
