We present a measurement of the ratio of t-tbar production cross section via gluon-gluon fusion to the total t-tbar production cross section in p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV at the Tevatron. Using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 955/pb recorded by the CDF II detector at Fermilab, we select events based on the t-tbar decay to lepton+jets. Using an artificial neural network technique we discriminate between t-tbar events produced via q-qbar annihilation and gluon-gluon fusion, and find Cf=(gg->ttbar)/(pp->ttbar)<0.33 at the 68% confidence level. This result is combined with a previous measurement to obtain the most precise measurement of this quantity, Cf=0.07+0.15-0.07.
We search for evidence of resonant top quark pair production in 955 pb-1 of p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. For fully reconstructed candidate t-tbar events triggered on leptons with large transverse momentum and containing at least one identified b-quark jet, we compare the invariant mass spectrum of t-tbar pairs to the expected superposition of standard model t-tbar, non-t-tbar backgrounds, and a simple resonance model based on a sequential Z' boson. We establish upper limits for sigma(p-pbar to Z') times Br(Z' to t-tbar) in th…
We present the first measurement of the color representation of the hadronically decaying W boson in t-tbar events, from 5.3 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 experiment. A novel calorimeter-based vectorial variable, "jet pull," is used, sensitive to the color-flow structure of the final state. We find that the fraction of uncolored W bosons is 0.56 +- 0.42(stat+syst), in agreement with the standard model.
We present a measurement of the t-tbar cross section in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 109 pb-1 collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The measurement uses t-tbar decays into final states which contain one or two high transverse momentum leptons and multiple jets, and final states which contain only jets. Using acceptances appropriate for a top quark mass of 175 GeV/c^2, we find sigma(t-tbar)=7.6 (+1.8 -1.5) pb .
We have studied tbar-t production using multijet final states in pbar-p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV, with an integrated luminosity of 110.3 pb(-1). Each of the top quarks with these final states decays exclusively to a bottom quark and a W boson, with the W bosons decaying into quark-antiquark pairs. The analysis has been optimized using neural networks to achieve the smallest expected fractional uncertainty on the tbar-t production cross section, and yields a cross section of 7.1 +/- 2.8(stat.) +/- 1.5(syst.) pb, assuming a top quark mass of 172.1 GeV/c^(2). Combining thi…
The production of a Standard Model Higgs boson in association with a top quark pair at the upcoming high luminosity run (15 inverse fb integrated luminosity) of the Fermilab Tevatron (root s = 2.0 TeV) is revisited. For Higgs masses below 140 GeV we demonstrate that the production cross section times branching ratio for H->B Bbar decays yields a significant number of events and that this mode is competitive with and complementary to the searches using P Pbar -> WH, ZH associated production. For higher mass Higgs bosons the H -> W+ W- decays are more difficult but have the potential to provide …
We present evidence for dilepton events from t tbar production with one electron or muon and one hadronically decaying tau lepton from the decay t tbar -> (l nu_l) (tau nu_tau) b bbar, (l=e, mu), using the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). In a 109 pb^-1 data sample of p pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV we expect ~1 signal event and a total background of ~2 events; we observe 4 candidate events (2 e tau and 2 mu tau). Three of these events have jets identified as b candidates, compared to an estimated background of 0.28+-0.02 events.
We observe hadronic W decays in t-tbar -> W (-> l nu) + >= 4 jet events using a 109 pb-1 data sample of p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). A peak in the dijet invariant mass distribution is obtained that is consistent with W decay and inconsistent with the background prediction by 3.3 standard deviations. From this peak we measure the W mass to be 77.2 +- 4.6 (stat+syst) GeV/c^2. This result demonstrates the presence of two W bosons in t-tbar candidates in the W (-> l nu) + >= 4 jet channel.
A search for narrow resonances that decay into t-tbar pairs has been performed using 130 pb^{-1} of data in the lepton+jets channel collected in p-pbar collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV. There is no significant deviation observed from the standard model, and upper limits at the 95 % confidence level on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction to t-tbar are presented for narrow resonances as a function of the resonance mass M_X. These limits are used to exclude the existence of a leptophobic topcolor particle with mass M_X < 560 GeV/c^2 and width Γ_X = 0.012 M_X.
This paper reports a measurement of the cross section for the pair production of top quarks in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data was collected from the CDF II detector in a set of runs with a total integrated luminosity of 1.1 fb^{-1}. The cross section is measured in the dilepton channel, the subset of ttbar events in which both top quarks decay through t -> Wb -> l nu b where l = e, mu, or tau. The lepton pair is reconstructed as one identified electron or muon and one isolated track. The use of an isolated track to identify the second lepton increases…
We present a new measurement of the inclusive forward-backward t-tbar production asymmetry and its rapidity and mass dependence. The measurements are performed with 5.3 fb^{-1} of p-pbar collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV, recorded with CDF II at the Fermilab Tevatron. Significant inclusive asymmetries are observed in the laboratory and t-tbar rest frame, and are consistent with CP conservation under interchange of t and tbar. In the t-tbar rest frame, the asymmetry increases with the t-tbar rapidity difference, Δ(y), and with the invariant mass M_{t-tbar} of the t-tbar system. Parton-level asy…
We establish the existence of the top quark using a 67 pb^-1 data sample of Pbar-P collisions at Sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Employing techniques similar to those we previously published, we observe a signal consistent with t-tbar decay to WW b-bbar, but inconsistent with the background prediction by 4.8 sigma. Additional evidence for the top quark is provided by a peak in the reconstructed mass distribution. We measure the top quark mass to be 176 +/-8(stat) +/- 10(sys.) GeV/c^2, and the t-tbar production cross section to be 6.8 +3.6 -2.4 pb.
Recent results on top quark physics with the D0 experiment in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV for an integrated luminosity of 125 pb**-1 are reported. The direct measurement of the top quark mass uses single lepton and dilepton events, giving the result m(top) = 172.1 +/- 7.1 GeV/c**2. The measurement of the t-tbar production cross section includes analyses from 9 top decay channels: dilepton (t-tbar --> e+mu, e+e, and mu+mu), electron and neutrino (t-tbar --> e+nu), single leptons (t-tbar --> e + jets, t-tbar --> mu + jets) with and without b tagging, and all-jets (t-tbar --> 6 jets). …
We present a measurement of tbar-t production using multijet final states in pbar-p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV, with an integrated luminosity of 110.3 pb(-1). Combining this result with previous D0 measurements, where one or both of the W bosons decay leptonically, gives a tbar-t production cross section of 5.9 +…
We compute the O(alpha_s) QCD corrections to the partonic process gg -> t-tbar-Z at the LHC. This partonic channel is the dominant component of the scattering process pp -> t-tbar-Z, which will be important for measuring the t-tbar-Z electroweak couplings. The O(alpha_s) corrections increase the total cross section by up to 75% for reasonable choices of the renormalization and factorization scales. Inclusion of these contributions descreases the residual scale dependence of the cross section coming from uncalculated higher order terms to +-5%.
The top quark plays an important role in the grand scheme of particle physics, and is also interesting on its own merits. We present recent results from CDF on top-quark physics based on 100-200/pb of p-pbar collision data. We have measured the t-tbar cross section in different decay modes using several different techniques, and are beginning our studies of top-quark properties. New analyses for this conference include a measurement of the t-tbar cross section in the lepton-plus-jets channel using a neural net to distinguish signal and background events, and measurements of top-quark branching…
We search for standard model single-top-quark production in the W-gluon fusion and W* channels using 106 pb^-1 of data from p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We set an upper limit at 95% C.L. on the combined W-gluon fusion and W* single-top cross section of 14 pb, roughly six times larger than the standard model prediction. Separate 95% C.L. upper limits in the W-gluon fusion and W* channels are also determined and are found to be 13 and 18 pb, respectively.
We present the first measurement of the fraction of top quark pair production through gluon-gluon fusion. We use 0.96/fb of s**(1/2)=1.96 TeV p-pbar collision data recorded with the CDF II detector at Fermilab. We identify the candidate t-tbar events with a high-energy charged lepton, a neutrino candidate, and four or more jets. Using charged particles with low transverse momentum in t-tbar events, we find the fraction of top quark pair production through gluon-gluon fusion to be 0.07+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.07(syst), corresponding to a 95% confidence level upper limit of 0.33, in agreement with the …
We measure the top quark mass m_t using t tbar pairs produced in the D0 detector by root(s) = 1.8 TeV p pbar collisions in a 125 pb^-1 exposure at the Fermilab Tevatron. We make a two constraint fit to m_t in t tbar --> b W^+ bbar W^- final states with one W decaying to q qbar and the other to e nu or mu nu. Events are binned in fit mass versus a measure of probability for events to be signal rather than background. Likelihood fits to the data yield m_t = 173.3 +- 5.6 (stat) +- 6.2 (syst) GeV/c^2.
We have searched for production of t-tbar pairs in p-pbar interactions at 1.8 TeV center-of-mass energy at the FNAL Tevatron collider. The search assumes standard model decay for top quark into W + b quark. We observe in e+jet and mu+jet final states a small, not statistically significant, excess above the background estimated by two different methods. The results presented are preliminary.
We present a measurement of the top quark mass with t-tbar dilepton events produced in p-pbar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV and collected by the CDF II detector. A sample of 328 events with a charged electron or muon and an isolated track, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb$^{-1}$, are selected as t-tbar candidates. To account for the unconstrained event kinematics, we scan over the phase space of the azimuthal angles ($ϕ_{ν_1},ϕ_{ν_2}$) of neutrinos and reconstruct the top quark mass for each $ϕ_{ν_1},ϕ_{ν_2}$ pair by minimizing a $χ^2$ function in t…
We present measurements of the top quark mass using the \mT2, a variable related to the transverse mass in events with two missing particles. We use the template method applied to t\tbar dilepton events produced in p\pbar collisions at Fermilab's Tevatron and collected by the CDF detector. From a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.4 \invfb, we select 236 t\tbar candidate events. Using the \mT2 distribution, we measure the top quark mass to be M_{Top} = 168.0^{+4.8}_{-4.0} $\pm$ {2.9} GeV/c^{2}. By combining the \mT2 with the reconstructed top mass distributions based on…
We present a measurement of the top quark mass using a sample of t-tbar decays into an electron or a muon, a neutrino, and four jets. The data were collected in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV with the Collider Detector at Fermilab and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 109 pb^-1. We measure the top quark mass to be 175.9 +/- 4.8(stat.) +/- 4.9(syst.) GeV/c^2.
We propose an axigluon with mass between 400 and 450 GeV and flavor universal couplings to quarks to explain the Tevatron t-tbar forward-backward asymmetry. The model predicts a small negative asymmetry for t-tbar pairs with invariant mass below 450 GeV and a large positive asymmetry above 450 GeV. The asymmetry arises from interference between s-channel gluon and axigluon diagrams and requires a relatively weakly coupled axigluon ($g_{a} = g_{qcd}/3$). Axigluon-gluon interference does not contribute to the t-tbar cross section. New contributions to the cross section arise only at fourth order…
We present a measurement of the shapes of b-jets using 300 pb-1 of data obtained with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II) in p pbar collisions at center of mass energy sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. This measurement covers a wide transverse momentum range, from 52 to 300 GeV/c. Samples of heavy-flavor enhanced jets together with inclusive jets are used to extract the average shapes of b-jets. The b-jets are expected to be broader than inclusive jets. Moreover, b-jets containing a single b-quark are expected to be narrower than those containing a b bbar pair from gluon splitting. The measure…
We present measurements of the transverse momentum distribution of W and Z bosons produced in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. The data were collected with the D0 detector at Fermilab during 1994-1996 Tevatron run. The results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on the perturbative QCD and soft gluon resummation combined calculation over the entire measured pt range p_T = 0-200 GeV/c).
Possible anomalous (or nonstandard) top-quark interactions with the gluon and those with the W boson induced by SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge-invariant dimension-6 effective operators are studied in p p -> t tbar X -> l^+ X' (l=e or mu) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The final charged-lepton (l^+) angular distribution is first computed for nonvanishing nonstandard top-gluon and top-W couplings with a cut on its transverse momentum. The optimal-observable procedure is then applied to this distribution in order to estimate the expected statistical uncertainties in measurements of those couplin…
We describe a measurement of the mass of the top quark from the purely hadronic decay modes of t-tbar pairs using all-jet data produced in p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The data, which correspond to an integrated luminosity of 110.2 pb^-1, were collected with the Dzero detector from 1992 to 1996. We find a top quark mass of 178.5 + 13.7 (stat) + 7.7(syst) GeV/c^2.
We review the search for the top quark conducted by the D-Zero collaboration using data from the Fermilab pbar-p collider. Based upon a preliminary analysis of an integrated luminosity of about 13.5 pb-1, we have searched for t-tbar production and decay in the experimental channels involving a pair of dileptons (electron or muon) plus jets, or single leptons plus jets. Summed over all channels, we observe 7 events in our data, to be compared with an expectation from background processes of 3.2 +/- 1.1 events. The t-tbar ~cross-section deduced from the small excess of events is presented as a f…
Through top-quark pair productions at LHC, we study possible effects of nonstandard top-gluon couplings yielded by SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) invariant dimension-6 effective operators. We calculate the total cross section and also some distributions for p p -> t tbar X as functions of two anomalous-coupling parameters, i.e., the chromoelectric and chromomagnetic moments of the top, which are constrained by the total cross section sigma(p pbar -> t tbar X) measured at Tevatron. We find that LHC might give us some chances to observe sizable effects induced by those new couplings.
We present a study of events with W bosons and hadronic jets produced in pbar p collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The data consist of 51400 W^+/- -> e^+/- nu decay candidates from 108 pb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF detector at the Tevatron Collider. The cross sections and jet production properties have been measured for W + \geq 1 to \geq 4 jet events. The data are compared to predictions of leading order QCD matrix element calculations with added gluon radiation and simulated fragmentation.
We determine the top quark mass m_t using t-tbar pairs produced in the D0 detector by \sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV p-pbar collisions in a 125 pb^-1 exposure at the Fermilab Tevatron. We make a two constraint fit to m_t in t-tbar -> b W^+bbar W^- final states with one W boson decaying to q-qbar and the other to e-nu or mu-nu. Likelihood fits to the data yield m_t(l+jets) = 173.3 +- 5.6 (stat) +- 5.5 (syst) GeV/c^2. When this result is combined with an analysis of events in which both W bosons decay into leptons, we obtain m_t = 172.1 +- 5.2 (stat) +- 4.9 (syst) GeV/c^2. An alternate analysis, using three…
The D0 collaboration has performed a measurement of the top quark mass based on six candidate events for the process t tbar -> b W+ bbar W-, where the W bosons decay to e nu or mu nu. This sample was collected during an exposure of the D0 detector to an integrated luminosity of 125 pb^-1 of sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV p-pbar collisions. We obtain mt = 168.4 +- 12.3 (stat) +- 3.7 (sys) GeV/c^2, consistent with the measurement obtained using single-lepton events. Combination of the single-lepton and dilepton results yields mt = 172.0 +- 7.5 GeV/c^2.
We present a calculation of the cross section for the process p pbar -> Zt' -> t tbar, the production of a Topcolor Z' with subsequent decay to top quark pairs in proton anti-proton collisions at 1.8 TeV. Variations of the cross section with varying assumptions about the model, the resonance width, the parton distributions and the renormalization scale are presented.
A measurement of the top quark mass using events with one charged lepton, missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state, collected by the D0 detector from p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, is presented. A constrained fit is used to fully reconstruct the kinematics of the events. For every event a top quark mass likelihood is calculated taking into account all possible jet assignments and the probability that an event is signal or background. Lifetime-based identification of b jets is employed to enhance the separation between t-tbar signal and …
Long-lived, heavy particles are predicted in a number of models beyond the standard model of particle physics. We present the first direct search for such particles' decays, occurring up to 100 hours after their production and not synchronized with an accelerator bunch crossing. We apply the analysis to the gluino (~g), predicted in split supersymmetry, which after hadronization can become charged and lose enough momentum through ionization to come to rest in dense particle detectors. Approximately 410 pb^-1 of p-pbar collisions at 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector during Run II of the F…
New colour octet vectors below the TeV scale could explain the anomalous t tbar forward-backward asymmetry observed at the Tevatron experiments, while being consistent with the current LHC data. These models generally lead to four-top final states at the LHC at observable levels. We compute the four-top production cross section at the LHC in a model with a massive colour octet vector as a function its mass, its width and its coupling to the top quark. Octet masses in the vicinity of the t tbar threshold are generally excluded by present limits on the production of same-sign dileptons and trile…
Single and pair top-quark production in proton-lead (p-Pb) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and future circular collider (FCC) energies, are studied with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations including nuclear parton distribution functions. At the LHC, the pair-production cross sections amount to sigma(t-tbar) = 3.4 mub in Pb-Pb at sqrt(s) = 5.5 TeV, and sigma(t-tbar) = 60 nb in p-Pb at sqrt(s) = 8.8 TeV. At the FCC energies of sqrt(s) = 39 and 63 TeV, the same cross sections are factors of 90 and 55 times larger respectively. In the lepton…
I present results for top quark production in hadronic collisions at LHC and Tevatron energies. The soft-gluon corrections to the differential cross section are resummed at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) accuracy via the two-loop soft anomalous dimension matrices. Approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) differential and total cross sections are calculated. Detailed theoretical predictions are shown for the t tbar cross section and the top quark p_T distribution at the Tevatron and the LHC.
The photon plus heavy-flavour quark (b, c) final state provides a unique and valuable window into both the sea quark content of the proton and the splitting of gluons into heavy-flavour quark pairs. A new combination of experimental techniques has provided the basis for the first measurements of the differential gamma + c + X and gamma + b + X production cross sections at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The measurements use ~1 fb-1 of data from p-pbar collisions collected with the D0 detector.
The DO collaboration reports on a search for the Standard Model top quark in pbar-p collisions at Sqrt(s)=1.8TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, with an integrated luminosity of approximately 50pb-1. We have searched for t-tbar production in the dilepton and single-lepton decay channels, with and without tagging of b-quark jets. We observed 17 events with an expected background of 3.8+/-0.6 events. The probability for an upward fluctuation of the background to produce the observed signal is 2.0E-6 (equivalent to 4.6 standard deviations). The kinematic properties of the excess events are consistent w…
We report a new measurement of the pseudorapidity (eta) and transverse- energy (Et) dependence of the inclusive jet production cross section in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV using 95 pb**-1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The differential cross section d^2sigma/(dEt deta) is presented up to |eta|=3, significantly extending previous measurements. The results are in good overall agreement with next-to-leading order predictions from QCD, indicate a preference for certain parton distribution functions, and provide the world's best constraint on the gluon dis…
We compare predictions for the W, Z, gg->H and t-tbar total cross sections at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), for a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, using the most recent publicly available next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order parton distribution functions (PDFs) from all PDF fitting groups. In particular, we focus on the dependence on the different values of the strong coupling, alpha_S(M_Z^2), used by each group. We also perform a comparison of the relevant quark-antiquark and gluon-gluon luminosity functions. We make some comments on the recent PDF4LHC recommendations. Fi…
This document reviews several recent measurements at the Fermilab Tevatron, including the cross sections of inclusive jet, dijet production, the cross sections of electroweak boson (W or Z) production in association with inclusive or heavy-flavor (b or c) jets, and b-jet shapes. In addition, searches for new physics using the dijet angular distributions are discussed. These analyses are based on integrated luminosities of 0.3--2.5/fb of p-pbar collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, collected with the CDF and D0 detectors. The results directly test the leading order and next-to leading order calculat…
We have measured the azimuthal angular correlation of bottom anti-bottom production, using 86.5 pb-1 of data collected by Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in proton anti-proton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV during 1994-1995. In high-energy p-pbar collisions, such as at the Tevatron, bottom anti-bottom production can be schematically categorized into three mechanisms. The leading-order (LO) process is ``flavor creation,'' where both the bottom and anti-bottom quarks substantially participate in the hard scattering and result in a distinct back-to-back signal in final state. The ``flavor exci…
We demonstrate that a trigger on hard dijet production at small rapidities allows to establish a quantitative distinction between central and peripheral collisions in pbar-p and p-p collisions at Tevatron and LHC energies. Such a trigger strongly reduces the effective impact parameters as compared to minimum bias events. This happens because the transverse spatial distribution of hard partons (x >~ 10^{-2}) in the proton is considerably narrower than that of soft partons, whose collisions dominate the total cross section. In the central collisions selected by the trigger, most of the partons w…
Recently, the Auger group has extracted the proton-air cross section from observations of air showers produced by cosmic ray protons (and nuclei) interacting in the atmosphere and converted it into measurements of the total and inelastic $pp$ cross sections $σ_{\rm tot}$ and $σ_{\rm inel}$ at the super-LHC energy of 57 TeV. Their results reinforce our earlier conclusions that the proton becomes a black disk at asymptotic energies, a prediction reached on the basis of sub-LHC $\pbar p$ and $pp$ measurements of $σ_{\rm tot}$ and $ρ$, the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward sca…
