We compute the O(alpha_s) QCD corrections to the partonic process gg -> t-tbar-Z at the LHC. This partonic channel is the dominant component of the scattering process pp -> t-tbar-Z, which will be important for measuring the t-tbar-Z electroweak couplings. The O(alpha_s) corrections increase the total cross section by up to 75% for reasonable choices of the renormalization and factorization scales. Inclusion of these contributions descreases the residual scale dependence of the cross section coming from uncalculated higher order terms to +-5%.
We present theoretical predictions for the hadroproduction of t tbar W+, t tbar W- and t tbar Z at LHC as obtained by matching numerical computations at NLO accuracy in QCD with Shower Monte Carlo programs. The calculation is performed by PowHel, relying on the POWHEG-BOX framework, that allows for the matching between the fixed order computation, with input of matrix elements produced by the HELAC-NLO collection of event generators, and the Parton Shower evolution, followed by hadronization and hadron decays as described by PYTHIA and HERWIG. We focus on the dilepton and trilepton decay chann…
The reaction pp/pbar p -> t tbar jet+X is an important background process for Higgs boson searches in the mass range below 200 GeV. Apart from that it is also an ideal laboratory for precision measurements in the top quark sector. Both applications require a solid theoretical prediction, which can be achieved only through a full next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation. In this work we describe the NLO computation of the subprocess gg -> t tbar g.
We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of top--anti-top quark pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and at the LHC. We present results for the t tbar + jet cross section and the forward--backward charge asymmetry. The corrections stabilize the leading-order prediction for the cross section. The charge asymmetry receives large corrections.
We present the next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections to the inclusive total cross section for the production of a Higgs boson in association with a top anti-top quark pair within the Standard Model at the Tevatron and the LHC.
We analyse subleading electroweak effects in the top anti-top resonance production region in e+ e- collisions which arise due to the decay of the top and anti-top quarks into the W+ W- b bbar final state. These are NLO corrections adopting the non-relativistic power counting v ~ alpha_s ~ sqrt(alpha_EW). In contrast to the QCD corrections which have been calculated (almost) up to NNNLO, the parametrically larger NLO electroweak contributions have not been completely known so far, but are mandatory for the required accuracy at a future linear collider. The missing parts of these NLO contributio…
The effect of anomalous chromoelectric couplings of the gluon to the top quark are considered in e+ e- --> t tbar. The total cross section, as well as t and tbar polarizations are calculated to order alpha_s in the presence of the anomalous couplings. One of the two linear combinations of t and tbar polarizations is CP even, while the other is CP odd. Limits that could be obtained at a future linear collider on CP-odd combinations of anomalous couplings are determined.
We study the effects of gluon interference in the production and semi-leptonic decay of a t-tbar pair above threshold at the Next Linear Collider (NLC). We calculate all matrix elements to next-to-leading order and use the resulting expressions for the development of a Monte Carlo event generator. Our results show effects at the level of 10% in differential cross-sections. We thus extend previous results obtained by analytical means in the soft-gluon limit.
We determine the O(α_s) radiative corrections to polarized top quark pair production in e+ e- -annihilations with a specified gluon energy cut. We write down fully analytical results for the unpolarized and polarized O(α_s) cross sections e+ e- -> tbar t (G) and e+ e- -> tbar t(pol.) (G) including their polar orientation dependence relative to the beam direction. In the soft gluon limit we recover the usual factorizing form known from the soft gluon approximation. In the limit when the gluon energy cut takes its maximum value we recover the totally inclusive unpolarized and polarized cross sec…
We propose an axigluon with mass between 400 and 450 GeV and flavor universal couplings to quarks to explain the Tevatron t-tbar forward-backward asymmetry. The model predicts a small negative asymmetry for t-tbar pairs with invariant mass below 450 GeV and a large positive asymmetry above 450 GeV. The asymmetry arises from interference between s-channel gluon and axigluon diagrams and requires a relatively weakly coupled axigluon ($g_{a} = g_{qcd}/3$). Axigluon-gluon interference does not contribute to the t-tbar cross section. New contributions to the cross section arise only at fourth order…
Possible anomalous (or nonstandard) top-quark interactions with the gluon and those with the W boson induced by SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge-invariant dimension-6 effective operators are studied in p p -> t tbar X -> l^+ X' (l=e or mu) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The final charged-lepton (l^+) angular distribution is first computed for nonvanishing nonstandard top-gluon and top-W couplings with a cut on its transverse momentum. The optimal-observable procedure is then applied to this distribution in order to estimate the expected statistical uncertainties in measurements of those couplin…
We argue that a relatively light massive gluon with mass <= 1 TeV, small purely axial couplings to light quarks and sizable vector and axial couplings to the top quark can reproduce the large forward-backward asymmetry observed at the Tevatron without conflicting with the t tbar and the dijet invariant mass distributions measured at the Tevatron and the LHC. We show that realistic Higgsless models with warped extra dimensions naturally fulfil all the necessary ingredients to realize this scenario. While current data is unable to discover or exclude these heavy gluons with masses 850 GeV, they …
We study the process pp -> t tbar H at sqrt(s)=14 TeV where H -> WW. We focus on final states that include three or four leptons. Signal and background samples are generated at leading order (LO) and normalized to next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations. We employ the "Snowmass" detector simulation and event reconstruction. Cuts are selected which provide a substantial signal yield while suppressing the main backgrounds. Systematic uncertainties are estimated for the overall normalization of signal and background processes. With no improvement in the current theoretical uncertainties on sigma…
QCD corrections to order alpha_s in the soft-gluon approximation to angular distributions of decay charged leptons in the process e+e- -> t tbar followed by semileptonic decay of t or tbar, are obtained in the e+e- centre-of-mass frame. As compared to distributions in the top rest frame, these have the advantage that they would allow direct comparison with experiment without the need to reconstruct the top rest frame. The results also do not depend on the choice of a spin quantization axis for t or tbar. Analytic expression for the triple distribution in the polar angle of t and polar and azim…
We present in detail the calculation of the O(alpha_s^3) inclusive total cross section for the process pp -> t-tbar-h, in the Standard Model, at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with center-of-mass energy sqrt(s_H)=14 TeV. The calculation is based on the complete set of virtual and real O(alpha_s) corrections to the parton level processes q-qbar -> t-tbar-h and gg -> t-tbar-h, as well as the tree level processes (q,qbar)g -> t-tbar-h-(q,qbar). The virtual corrections involve the computation of pentagon diagrams with several internal and external massive particles, first encountered in this proce…
Order-alpha_s QCD corrections in the soft-gluon approximation to angular distributions of decay charged leptons in the process e+e- -> t tbar, followed by semileptonic decay of t or tbar, are obtained in the e+e- centre-of-mass frame. As compared to distributions in the top rest frame, these have the advantage that they would allow direct comparison with experiment without the need to reconstruct the top rest frame or a spin quantization axis. Analytic expressions for the distribution in the charged-lepton polar angle and triple distribution in the polar angle of t and polar and azimuthal angl…
Through top-quark pair productions at LHC, we study possible effects of nonstandard top-gluon couplings yielded by SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) invariant dimension-6 effective operators. We calculate the total cross section and also some distributions for p p -> t tbar X as functions of two anomalous-coupling parameters, i.e., the chromoelectric and chromomagnetic moments of the top, which are constrained by the total cross section sigma(p pbar -> t tbar X) measured at Tevatron. We find that LHC might give us some chances to observe sizable effects induced by those new couplings.
The complete density matrix for all polarization configurations in the process B--> t tbar, where B is an off--shell Z or photon and t is the top quark, is calculated numerically including oneloop QCD corrections, i.e. virtual and real gluon contributions in O(alphas). The analysis is done in the framework of the helicity formalism. The results are particularly suited for top quark production at the Linear Collider, but may be useful in other circumstances as well. Relations to LEP and Tevatron physics are pointed out.
The triple gluon field strength operator $G^3$ represents the only genuinely gluonic CP conserving term which can appear at dimension-6 within an effective strong interaction Lagrangian. Previous studies of this operator have revealed that its effect on gluon scattering is surprisingly difficult to detect. In this article, we analyze the impact of $G^3$ upon top quark pair production. We find that it will generate observable cross section deviations from QCD at the LHC for even relatively small values of its coefficient. Furthermore, $G^3$ affects the transverse momentum distribution of the pr…
We calculate the leading O(alpha_s^4) contributions to the invariant mass distribution of top-quark pairs produced at the Tevatron and LHC, in the limit where the invariant mass of the t-tbar pair approaches the partonic center-of-mass energy. Our results determine at NNLO in alpha_s the coefficients of all singular plus distributions and scale-dependent logarithms in the differential partonic cross sections for q-qbar, gg -> t-tbar + X. A numerical analysis showing the effects of the NNLO corrections on the central values and scale dependence of the invariant mass distribution is performed. T…
The production of top quark pairs together with a hard gluon in e+e- annihilation is studied including next-to-leading order corrections in the strong coupling.
New colour octet vectors below the TeV scale could explain the anomalous t tbar forward-backward asymmetry observed at the Tevatron experiments, while being consistent with the current LHC data. These models generally lead to four-top final states at the LHC at observable levels. We compute the four-top production cross section at the LHC in a model with a massive colour octet vector as a function its mass, its width and its coupling to the top quark. Octet masses in the vicinity of the t tbar threshold are generally excluded by present limits on the production of same-sign dileptons and trile…
In events of the type e+ e- -> t tbar -> b W+ bbar W-, particle production could depend in a non-trivial way on the kinematics of the process. Energetic perturbative gluon radiation can be generated (when kinematically allowed) by the original t tbar system and by the t -> b W+ and tbar -> bbar W- decays, with negligible interference between the production and decay stages and between the t and tbar decays. Soft perturbative gluon emission and non-perturbative fragmentation does introduce a correlation, however. To illustrate the size of these effects, we study the multiplicity as a function o…
We compute the Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the partonic reaction that dominates top-pair production at the Tevatron. This is the first ever NNLO calculation of an observable with more than two colored partons, and/or massive fermions, at hadron colliders. Augmenting our fixed order calculation with soft-gluon resummation through Next-to-Next-to-Leading Logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy, we observe that the predicted total inclusive cross-section exhibits a very small perturbative uncertainty, estimated at +-2.7%. We expect that once all sub-dominant partonic reactions are…
We describe the off-diagonal spin basis for observing angular correlations in top quark pair production events at the Fermilab Tevatron. For events initiated by quark-antiquark annihilation, the top and antitop quark spins are 100% correlated in this basis: a spin-up top quark is always accompanied by a spin-down antitop quark and vice versa. Inclusion of the gluon-gluon initial state lowers the fraction of unlike spin events to 92%. Nevertheless, the angular correlations between the top and antitop quark decay products are twice as large in the off-diagonal basis as those in the more traditio…
At hadron colliders, the leading production mechanism for a pair of photons is from quark-anti-quark annihilation at the tree level. However, due to large gluon-gluon luminosity, the loop-induced process $gg\to γγ$ provides a substantial contribution. In particular, the amplitudes mediated by the top quark become important at the $t \bar t$ threshold and above. In this letter we present the first complete computation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections (up to $α_S^3$) to this process, including contributions from the top quark. These entail two-loop diagrams with massive propagators…
We present the calculation of the full next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to Higgs boson pair production via gluon fusion at the LHC, including the exact top-mass dependence in the two-loop virtual and one-loop real corrections. This is the first independent cross-check of the NLO QCD corrections presented in the literature before. Our calculation relies on numerical integrations of Feynman integrals, stabilised with integration-by-parts and a Richardson extrapolation to the narrow width approximation. We present results for the total cross section as well as for the invariant Higgs-p…
Higgs-pair production via gluon fusion is the dominant production mechanism of Higgs-boson pairs at hadron colliders. In this work, we present details of our numerical determination of the full next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections to the leading top-quark loops. Since gluon fusion is a loop-induced process at leading order, the NLO calculation requires the calculation of massive two-loop diagrams with up to four different mass/energy scales involved. With the current methods, this can only be done numerically, if no approximations are used. We discuss the setup and details of our numeri…

I present results for top quark production in hadronic collisions at LHC and Tevatron energies. The soft-gluon corrections to the differential cross section are resummed at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) accuracy via the two-loop soft anomalous dimension matrices. Approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) differential and total cross sections are calculated. Detailed theoretical predictions are shown for the t tbar cross section and the top quark p_T distribution at the Tevatron and the LHC.
The production of W+ W- b bbar from e+ e- collisions at energies close to the t tbar threshold is dominated by the resonant process with a nearly on-shell t tbar intermediate state. The W b pairs in the final state can also be reached through the decay of off-shell tops or through background processes containing no or only single top quarks. This non-resonant production starts to contribute at NLO to the W+ W- b bbar total cross section in the non-relativistic power-counting v ~ alpha_s ~ sqrt(alpha_EW). The NLO non-resonant corrections presented in this talk represent the non-trivial NLO elec…
We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the hadroproduction process $gg\to ZZ \to e^+e^- μ^+ μ^-$, matched to the parton shower in the POWHEG framework. We take advantage of the POWHEG BOX tool for the implementation and rely on PYTHIA 8 for the showering and hadronization stages. We fully include $γ^*/Z$ interference effects, while also covering the single-resonant region. For this phenomenological study we focus on four lepton production as a signal process, neglecting all quark mass effects as well as the Higgs-mediated contributions, which are known t…
We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to gluon-induced electroweak gauge boson pair production, $gg \to ZZ$ and $gg \to W^+W^-$, matched to the PYTHIA8 parton shower in the POWHEG approach. The calculation consistently incorporates the continuum background, the Higgs-mediated $gg\to H^* \to VV$ process, and their interference. We consider leptonic decay modes of the massive vector bosons and retain offshell and non-resonant contributions. The processes considered are loop-induced at leading order and thus contain two-loop virtual contributions as well as l…
We consider the production of four charged leptons in hadron collisions and compute the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the loop-induced gluon fusion contribution by consistently accounting for the Higgs boson signal, its corresponding background and their interference. The contribution from heavy-quark loops is exactly included in the calculation except for the two-loop $gg\to ZZ\to 4\ell$ continuum diagrams, for which the unknown heavy-quark effects are approximated through a reweighting procedure. Our calculation is combined with the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD and NLO …
We discuss the influence of anomalous tbar-t-G couplings on total and differential tbar-t production cross sections in hadron-hadron collisions. We study in detail the effects of a chromoelectric and a chromomagnetic dipole moment, d' and μ', of the top quark. In the d'-μ' plane, we find a whole region where the anomalous couplings give a zero net contribution to the total top production rate. In differential cross sections, the anomalous moments have to be quite sizable to give measurable effects. We estimate the values of d' and μ' which are allowed by the present Tevatron experimental resul…
Single and pair top-quark production in proton-lead (p-Pb) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and future circular collider (FCC) energies, are studied with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations including nuclear parton distribution functions. At the LHC, the pair-production cross sections amount to sigma(t-tbar) = 3.4 mub in Pb-Pb at sqrt(s) = 5.5 TeV, and sigma(t-tbar) = 60 nb in p-Pb at sqrt(s) = 8.8 TeV. At the FCC energies of sqrt(s) = 39 and 63 TeV, the same cross sections are factors of 90 and 55 times larger respectively. In the lepton…
We briefly summarise the "MSTW 2008" determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs), and subsequent follow-up studies, before reviewing some topical issues concerning the PDF dependence of cross sections at the Tevatron and LHC. We update a recently published study of benchmark Standard Model total cross sections (W, Z, gg->H and t-tbar production) at the 7 TeV LHC, where we account for all publicly available PDF sets and we compare to LHC data for W, Z, and t-tbar production. We show the sensitivity of the Higgs cross sections to the gluon distribution, then we demonstrate the ability …
A method is introduced for distinguishing top jets (boosted, hadronically decaying top quarks) from light quark and gluon jets using jet substructure. The procedure involves parsing the jet cluster to resolve its subjets, and then imposing kinematic constraints. With this method, light quark or gluon jets with pT ~ 1 TeV can be rejected with an efficiency of around 99% while retaining up to 40% of top jets. This reduces the dijet background to heavy t-tbar resonances by a factor of ~10,000, thereby allowing resonance searches in t-tbar to be extended into the all-hadronic channel. In addition,…
We report on a technique for evaluating finite unitarity cut for one-loop amplitudes in gauge theories, and discuss its application to the cut-constructible part of six-gluon amplitude in QCD.
We perform a threshold resummation calculation for the associated production of squarks and electroweakinos at the LHC to the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. Analytical results for the process-dependent soft anomalous dimension and the hard matching coefficient are presented. The resummed results are matched to fixed-order predictions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD, which are generalised to scenarios with non-universal squark masses and mixings. Numerically, the NLL contributions increase the total NLO cross section by $2\%$ to $6\%$ for squark masses ranging from 1 TeV to 3…
A central ingredient in establishing the properties of the newly discovered Higgs-like boson is to isolate its production via vector boson fusion (VBF). With the typical experimental selection cuts, the VBF sample is contaminated by a 25% fraction from Higgs + 2 jet production via gluon fusion (ggF) which has large perturbative uncertainties. We perform a detailed study of the perturbative uncertainties in the NLO predictions for pp -> H+2 jets via ggF used by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, with the VBF selection cuts of their current H -> gamma gamma analyses. We discuss in detail the appl…
We have calculated the NLO corrections for the leading twist amplitude of the reaction $γ^*γ\toππ$ at large virtuality of the photon and at $W^2\ll Q^2$. With a simple model for the two-pion quark and gluon distribution amplitudes we have estimated that the NLO effects may reduce the leading-order amplitude by as much as 30%. We have found that besides the usual twist-2 quark and gluon operators the NLO amplitude receives contribution from a distribution associated with twist-2 tensor gluon operator. The new gluon distribution can be investigated by studying the azimuthal asymmetry of the cros…
We compare constraints on the gluon polarization in the nucleon obtained in next to leading order global QCD fits to polarized deep inelastic scattering data with those coming from observables more directly linked to the gluon polarization, such as the double spin asymmetry measured by Phenix at RHIC, and high-pT hadron production studied by COMPASS
In this paper we complete our calculation of the NLO jet vertex which is part of the cross section formulae for the production of Mueller Navelet jets at hadron hadron colliders and of forward jets in deep inelastic electron proton scattering.
The production of a Higgs boson in association with a pair of t-tbar quarks will play a very important role at both hadron and lepton colliders. We review the status of theoretical predictions and their relevance to Higgs boson studies, with particular emphasis on the recently calculated NLO QCD corrections to the inclusive cross section for p-pbar,pp -> t-tbar-h. We conclude by briefly discussing the case of exclusive b-bbar-h production and the potential of this process in revealing signals of new physics beyond the Standard Model.
We review the recent developments of the QCD shockwave approach at Next-to-Leading Order. The general method of this effective action is sketched, and illustrated by the case of diffractive processes.
High-mass diffractive production of protons on the deuteron target is studied in the next-to-leading order (NLO) of the perturbative QCD in the BFKL approach. The non-trivial part of the NLO contributions coming from the triple interactions of the exchanged reggeons is considered. Analytic formulas are presented and shown to be infrared free and so ready for practical calculation.
Within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) the associated production of neutral Higgs bosons with top and bottom quarks belongs to the most important Higgs-boson production processes at the LHC. At large values of tan(beta), in particular, bottom--Higgs associated production constitutes the dominant production channel within the MSSM. We have calculated the next-to-leading-order supersymmetric QCD corrections to neutral Higgs production through the parton processes q qbar, gg -> t tbar / b bbar + h/H/A and present results for the total cross sections. The genuine …
We report on the calculation of the cross section for Higgs boson production in association with three jets via gluon fusion, at next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy in QCD, in the infinite top-mass approximation. After including the complete NLO QCD corrections, we observe a strong reduction in the scale dependence of the result, and an increased steepness in the transverse momentum distributions of both the Higgs and the leading jets. The results are obtained with the combined use of GoSam, Sherpa, and the MadDipole/MadEvent framework.
A feasibility study to extract the polarised gluon density from di-jet events at HERA in next-to-leading order is presented. It is shown that when taking next-to-leading order effects into account the asymmetries at HERA remain measurable and sensitive to the polarised gluon distribution. They can be used to extract the polarised gluon density in the proton in the region 0.005<x_g<0.4.
We present predictions for the SM-Higgs-pair production channels of relevance at the LHC: gluon-gluon fusion, VBF, and top-pair, W, Z and single-top associated production. All these results are at the NLO accuracy in QCD, and matched to parton showers by means of the MC@NLO method; hence, they are fully differential. With the exception of the gluon-gluon fusion process, for which a special treatment is needed in order to improve upon the infinite-top-mass limit, our predictions are obtained in a fully automatic way within the publicly available MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework. We show that for all…
The two loop (NLO) diagrams with quark content contributing to the gluon Regge trajectory are computed within the framework of Lipatov's effective action for QCD, using the regularization procedure for longitudinal divergencies recently proposed by two of us in http://arXiv.org/abs/arXiv:1110.6741. Perfect agreement with previous results in the literature is found, providing a robust check of the regularization prescription and showing that the high energy effective action is a very useful computational tool in the quasi-multi-Regge limit.
Feynman diagrams with two real partons contributing to the next-to-leading-order singlet gluon-quark DGLAP kernel are analysed. The infra-red singularities of unintegrated distributions are examined numerically. The analytical formulae are also given in some cases. The role of the colour coherence effects is found to be crucial for cancellations of the double- and single-logarithmic infra-red singularities.
We present a calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the loop-induced production of a photon pair through gluon fusion, including massive top quarks at two loops, where the two-loop integrals are calculated numerically. Matching the fixed-order NLO results to a threshold expansion, we obtain accurate results around the top quark pair production threshold. We analyse how the top quark threshold corrections affect distributions of the photon pair invariant mass and comment on the possibility of determining the top quark mass from precision measurements of the diphoton invariant mass spectrum.
We compute fully differential next-to-leading order QCD cross-sections for Higgs boson production via gluon fusion in the Standard Model. We maintain the full dependence of the cross-sections on the top and bottom quark mass. We find that finite quark mass effects are important given the achieved precision of QCD predictions for gluon fusion. Our Monte-Carlo program, HPro, can correct existing NNLO fully differential calculations, which employ the approximation of an infinitely heavy top and a vanishing bottom quark Yukawa coupling, for heavy quark finite mass effects through NLO.
Details of the calculation of the non-forward BFKL kernel at next-to-leading order (NLO) are offered. Specifically we show the calculation of the two-gluon production contribution. This contribution was the last missing part of the kernel. Together with the NLO gluon Regge trajectory, the NLO contribution of one-gluon production and the contribution of quark-antiquark production which were found before it defines the kernel completely for any colour state in the $t$-channel, in particular the Pomeron kernel presented recently.
We present a next-to-leading order calculation of Higgs boson production via gluon fusion interfaced to shower Monte Carlo programs, implemented according to the POWHEG method. A detailed comparison with MC@NLO and PYTHIA is carried out for several observables, for the Tevatron and LHC colliders. Comparisons with next-to-next-to-leading order results and with resummed ones are also presented.
