We investigate the possibility that a (light) hidden sector extra photon receives its mass via spontaneous symmetry breaking of a hidden sector Higgs boson, the so-called hidden-Higgs. The hidden-photon can mix with the ordinary photon via a gauge kinetic mixing term. The hidden-Higgs can couple to the Standard Model Higgs via a renormalizable quartic term - sometimes called the Higgs Portal. We discuss the implications of this light hidden-Higgs in the context of laser polarization and light-shining-through-the-wall experiments as well as cosmological, astrophysical, and non-Newtonian force measurements. For hidden-photons receiving their mass from a hidden-Higgs we find in the small mass regime significantly stronger bounds than the bounds on massive hidden sector photons alone.
We propose a framework in which visible matter interacts with matter from a hidden sector through mass mixings of Stückelberg U(1) gauge fields. In contrast to other Z' mediation scenarios, our setup has the added appealing features that (i) the choice of Z's can be significantly broadened without necessarily introducing unwanted exotic matter and (ii) there can be sizable tree-level interactions between the visible and hidden sectors. String theory embeddings of this scenario and their phenomenological features are briefly discussed.
Very light pseudoscalars can arise from the symmetry-breaking sector in many extensions of the Standard Model. If their mass is below 200 MeV, they can be long-lived and have interesting phenomenology. We discuss the experimental constraints on several models with light pseudoscalars, including one in which the pseudoscalar is naturally fermiophobic. Taking into account the stringent bounds from rare K and B decays, we find allowed parameter space in each model that may be accessible in direct production experiments. In particular, we study the photoproduction of light pseudoscalars at Jeffers…
The connection between Standard Model (SM) particles and dark matter (DM) can be introduced via hidden spin-2 massive mediator. In the present paper we consider the simplified benchmark link between charged lepton sector of SM and DM particles which are considered to be a hidden Dirac fermions from the dark sector. The regarding couplings are established through the dimension-5 operators involving spin-2 mediator field and the energy-momentum tensors of both SM and DM sectors. We study in detail the implication of this scenario for the lepton fixed-target facilities, such as NA64$e$, LDMX, NA6…
Cosmic-ray (CR) anti-nuclei are often considered as important observables for dark matter (DM) indirect detections at low kinetic energies below GeV per nucleon. Since the primary CR fluxes drop quickly towards high energies, the secondary anti-nuclei in CR are expected to be significantly suppressed in high energy regions ($\gtrsim 100$ GeV per nucleon). If DM particles are heavy, the annihilation productions of DM can be highly boosted, thus the fluxes of anti-nuclei produced by DM annihilations may exceed the secondary background at high energies, which opens a high energy window for DM ind…
Primordial electromagnetic fields can strongly affect the cosmic evolution of axions, and vice versa. We show that if helical electromagnetic fields are coherently produced in the early universe, their remnants source a field velocity to the coupled axions and enhance the relic abundance of axion dark matter. We discuss the implications for the QCD axion and axion-like particles that are coupled to the SM or hidden gauge groups. For a QCD axion coupled to hidden photons, we find that the conventional window for the axion decay constant $10^{8}\, \mathrm{GeV} \lesssim f \lesssim 10^{12}\, \math…
Future $c$-$τ$ factories are natural places to study extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics (SM) with new long-lived feebly interacting particles light enough to be produced in electron-positron collisions. We investigate prospects of these machines in exploring such extensions emphasizing the role of polarized beams in getting rid of the SM irreducible background for the missing energy signature. We illustrate this on example of $c$-$τ$ project in Novosibirsk, where the electron beam is designed to be polarized to achieve much higher sensitivity to hadronic resonances and $τ$-le…
I investigate a class of models with scalar and pseudoscalar solutions to the g-2 anomaly in the mass range between 1 MeV and 40 GeV. In particular, I investigate the constraints from BaBar, beam dump experiments and from Z decay measured quantities. I find that most of the favored region in this mass range is excluded except for a small window between ~30 MeV and 200 MeV. This open window is expected to be covered by the proposed NA64 experiment. The results can be readily applied to other proposed solutions of the anomaly, such as solutions with Z0 or with the dark photon.
MURMUR is a new passing-through-walls neutron experiment designed to constrain neutron/hidden neutron transitions allowed in the context of braneworld scenarios or mirror matter models. A nuclear reactor can act as a hidden neutron source, such that neutrons travel through a hidden world or sector. Hidden neutrons can propagate out of the nuclear core and far beyond the biological shielding. However, hidden neutrons can weakly interact with usual matter, making possible for their detection in the context of low-noise measurements. In the present work, the novelty rests on a better background d…
The possibility for our visible world to be a 3-brane embedded in a multidimensional bulk is at the heart of many theoretical edifices in high-energy physics. Probing the braneworld hypothesis is thus a major experimental challenge. Following recent theoretical works showing that matter swapping between braneworlds can occur, we propose a neutron-shining-through-a-wall experiment. We first show that an intense neutron source such as a nuclear reactor core can induce a hidden neutron flux in an adjacent hidden braneworld. We then describe how a low-background detector can detect neutrons arisin…
In this paper we investigate the possibility of searching for the hidden-bottom pentaquark states in photon-induced interactions at the LHC. We consider the presence of the $P_b$ resonance in the $s$-channel of the $γp \rightarrow Υp$ reaction and estimate its contribution for the exclusive $Υ$ photoproduction in the fixed-target mode of the LHC. Predictions for the total cross sections, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are derived using the STARlight Monte Carlo considering $Pb-p$, $Pb-He$ and $Pb-Ar$ fixed-target collisions at the LHC. Our results indicate that the presence of …
We investigate the scalar sector in an extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) containing a $SU(2)$ Higgs triplet of zero hypercharge and a gauge singlet beside the $SU(2)$ scalar doublets. In particular, we focus on a scenario of this model which allows a light pseudoscalar and/or a scalar below $100$ GeV, consistent with the most recent data from the LHC and the earlier data from the LEP experiments. We analyze the exotic decay of the discovered Higgs $(h_{125})$ into two light (hidden) Higgs bosons present in the extension. The latter are allowed by the uncertainties i…
Vector bosons, such as Dark Photon $A'$ or $Z'$, can couple to muons and be produced in the bremsstrahlung reaction $μ^- + N \rightarrow μ^- + N + A'(Z')$. Their possible subsequent invisible decay can be detected in fixed target experiments through missing energy/momentum signature. In such experiments, not only is the energy transfer to $A'(Z')$ important, but also the recoil muon angle $ψ_{μ'}$. In this paper, we derive the total and the double differential cross-sections involved in this process using the phase space Weiszäcker-Williams and improved Weiszäcker-Williams approximations, as w…
A dark sector -- a new non-Abelian gauge group Higgsed or confined near the GeV scale -- can be spectacularly probed in low-energy e+e- collisions. A low-mass dark sector can explain the annual modulation signal reported by DAMA/LIBRA and the PAMELA, ATIC, and INTEGRAL observations by generating small mass splittings and new interactions for weak-scale dark matter. Some of these observations may be the first signs of a low-mass dark sector that collider searches can definitively confirm. Production and decay of O(GeV)-mass dark states is mediated by a Higgsed Abelian gauge boson that mixes kin…
Supersymmetric models are typically taken to have $μ$ parameter and all soft supersymmetry breaking parameters at or near the weak scale. We point out that a small window of allowed values exists in which $μ$ and the electroweak gaugino masses are in the few GeV range. Such models naturally solve the supersymmetry $CP$ problem, can reduce the discrepancy in $R_b$, and suppress proton decay. In this window two neutralinos are in the few GeV range, two are roughly degenerate with the $Z^0$, and both charginos are roughly degenerate with the $W^{\pm}$ bosons. Such a signature cannot escape detect…
The $P_c(4312)$, $P_c(4440)$, and $P_c(4457)$ observed by the LHCb Collaboration are very likely to be $S$-wave $Σ_c\bar{D}^{(*)}$ molecular candidates due to their near-threshold character. In this work, we study the hidden-charm decay modes of these $P_c$ states, $P_c\to J/ψp(η_cp)$, using a quark interchange model. The decay mechanism for the $P_c\to J/ψp(η_cp)$ processes arises from the quark-quark interactions, where all parameters are determined by the mass spectra of mesons. We present our results in two scenarios. In scenario I, we perform the dynamical calculations and treat the $P_c$…
I describe a possible scenario for the origin of proton mass in terms of Cheshire Cat, half-skyrmions, topology change and interplay between hidden chiral-scale symmetry and induced local symmetry. This differs from the standard constituent-quark scenario. As the baryonic matter density is increased toward the vector manifestation (VM) fixed-point at which the $ρ$ mass is to vanish, the effective in-medium mass ratio $m^*_ρ/m^*_N$ is to tend to zero proportionally to $g^*_ρ$ where $g^*_ρ$ is the in-medium hidden gauge coupling constant. I develop the thesis that the intricacy involved in the m…
The Higgs boson offers a unique window to hidden sector fields S_i, singlets under the Standard Model gauge group, via the renormalizable interactions |H|^2 S_i^2. We prove that such interactions can provide new patterns for electroweak breaking, including radiative breaking by dimensional transmutation consistent with LEP bounds, and trigger the strong enough first order phase transition required by electroweak baryogenesis.
The sensitivities to anomalous quartic photon couplings at the Large Hadron Collider are estimated using diphoton production via photon fusion. The tagging of the protons proves to be a very powerful tool to suppress the background and unprecedented sensitivities down to $6 \cdot 10^{-15}$\gev$^{-4}$ are obtained, providing a new window on extra dimensions and strongly-interacting composite states in the multi-TeV range. Generic contributions to quartic photon couplings from charged and neutral particles with arbitrary spin are also presented.
In these proceedings we illustrate that light, very weakly interacting particles can arise naturally from physics which is fundamentally connected to very high energy scales. Searching for them therefore may give us interesting new insights into the structure of fundamental physics. Prime examples are the axion, and more general axion-like particles, as well as hidden sector photons and matter charged under them.
Compensated isocurvature perturbations (CIPs) are primordial fluctuations that balance baryon and dark-matter isocurvature to leave the total matter density unperturbed. The effects of CIPs on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies are similar to those produced by weak lensing of the CMB: smoothing of the power spectrum, and generation of non-Gaussian features. Previous work considered the CIP effects on the CMB power-spectrum but neglected to include the CIP effects on estimates of the lensing potential power spectrum (though its contribution to the non-Gaussian, connected, part o…
The current status of electric dipole moments of diamagnetic atoms which involves the synergy between atomic experiments and three different theoretical areas -- particle, nuclear and atomic is reviewed. Various models of particle physics that predict CP violation, which is necessary for the existence of such electric dipole moments, are presented. These include the standard model of particle physics and various extensions of it. Effective hadron level combined charge conjugation (C) and parity (P) symmetry violating interactions are derived taking into consideration different ways in which a …
We discuss the limits on the neutrino magnetic moment and hypothetical interactions with a hidden unparticle sector, coming from the first neutrino data release of the Borexino experiment. The observed spectrum in Borexino depends weakly on the solar model used in the analysis, since most of the signal comes from the mono-energetic 7Be neutrinos. This fact allows us to calibrate the nu-e scattering cross section through the spectral shape. In this way, we have derived a limit on the magnetic moment for the neutrinos coming from the Sun (in which a nu_mu and nu_tau component is present): mu_nu<…
We investigate $ϕ$ meson electroproduction to probe the hidden strangeness content of the nucleon. We found that even a small amount of the $s\bar{s}$ admixture in the nucleon wavefunction can lead to a significant change in several double polarization asymmetries in $ϕ$ electroproduction, which can be tested experimentally at current electron facilities.
We study supergravity models in four dimensions where the hidden sector is superconformal and strongly-coupled over several decades of energy below the Planck scale, before undergoing spontaneous breakdown of scale invariance and supersymmetry. We show that large anomalous dimensions can suppress Kahler contact terms between the hidden and visible sectors, leading to models in which the hidden sector is "sequestered" and anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking can naturally dominate, thus solving the supersymmetric flavor problem. We construct simple, explicit models of the hidden sector based…
The observation of $t\bar th(125)$ production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the first direct measurement of the top Yukawa coupling. It opens the window on an extra top Yukawa coupling, $ρ_{tt}$, from a second Higgs doublet, without a $Z_2$ symmetry to forbid flavor changing neutral Higgs couplings. We show that $t\bar th$ and Higgs property measurements at the High Luminosity LHC can constrain the ${\rm Re}\,ρ_{tt}$--${\rm Im}\,ρ_{tt}$ parameter space that could drive electroweak baryogenesis, but the $Γ_h$ width measurement must be considerably improved beyond current projections.
We explore strategies for probing Hidden Valley scenarios exhibiting confinement. Such scenarios lead to a multiplicity of light hidden hadrons from showering processes. Their decays are typically soft and displaced, making them challenging to probe with traditional LHC searches. We show the low trigger thresholds and excellent track and vertex reconstruction at LHCb provide an ideal environment to search for such signals -- in both muonic and hadronic channels. We also explore the potential of ATLAS/CMS and discuss modifications to present searches that might make these experiments competitiv…
Dark Matter (DM) is omnipresent in our universe. Despite its abundance, the microscopic identity of DM still remains a mystery. Primordial black holes (PBHs), possibly formed via gravitational collapse of large density perturbations in the early universe, are one of the earliest proposed and viable DM candidates. Recent studies indicate that PBHs can make up a large or even entire fraction of the DM density for a wide range of masses. Here, we briefly review the observational constraints on PBHs as DM, concentrating on the ultra-light mass window. Ultra-light PBHs emit particles via Hawking ra…
The neutron lifetime anomaly has been used to motivate the introduction of new physics with hidden-sector particles coupled to baryon number, and on which neutron stars provide powerful constraints. Although the neutron lifetime anomaly may eventually prove to be of mundane origin, we use it as motivation for a broader review of the ways that baryon number violation, be it real or apparent, and dark sectors can intertwine and how neutron star observables, both present and future, can constrain them.
Probing hidden sectors with a muon beam: implication of spin-0 dark matter mediators for muon $(g-2)$ anomaly and validity of the Weiszäcker-Williams approach
Photons radiated from an evaporating black hole in principle provide complete information on the particle spectrum of nature up to the Planck scale. If an evaporating black hole were to be observed, it would open a unique window onto models beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. To demonstrate this, we compute the limits that could be placed on the size of a dark sector. We find that observation of an evaporating black hole at a distance of 0.01 parsecs could probe dark sector models containing one or more copies of the Standard Model particles, with any mass scale up to 100 TeV.
A secluded U(1) gauge field, kinetically mixed with Standard Model hypercharge, provides a `portal' mediating interactions with a hidden sector at the renormalizable level, as recently exploited in the context of WIMP dark matter. The secluded U(1) symmetry-breaking scale may naturally be suppressed relative to the weak scale, and so this sector is efficiently probed by medium energy electron-positron colliders. We study the collider signatures of the minimal secluded U(1) model, focusing on the reach of B-factory experiments such as BaBar and BELLE. In particular, we show that Higgs-strahlung…
