Primordial electromagnetic fields can strongly affect the cosmic evolution of axions, and vice versa. We show that if helical electromagnetic fields are coherently produced in the early universe, their remnants source a field velocity to the coupled axions and enhance the relic abundance of axion dark matter. We discuss the implications for the QCD axion and axion-like particles that are coupled to the SM or hidden gauge groups. For a QCD axion coupled to hidden photons, we find that the conventional window for the axion decay constant $10^{8}\, \mathrm{GeV} \lesssim f \lesssim 10^{12}\, \mathrm{GeV}$ can be completely closed due to overproduction of axion dark matter by helical electromagnetic fields as little as $α\, ΔN_{\mathrm{eff}} \gtrsim 10^{-12}$, where $α$ is the gauge coupling and $ΔN_{\mathrm{eff}}$ is the effective extra relativistic degrees of freedom of the hidden photons.
We point out that kinetic and Stückelberg mixings that are generically present in the low energy effective action of axions can significantly widen the window of axion decay constants. We show that an effective super-Planckian decay constant can be obtained even when the axion kinetic matrix has only sub-Planckian entries. Our minimal model involves only two axions, a Stückelberg U(1) and a modest rank instanton generating non-Abelian group. Below the mass of the Stückelberg U(1), there is only a single axion with a non-perturbatively generated potential. In contrast to previous approaches, th…
We formulate axion-electrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in the cosmological context assuming weak gravity. The two formulations are made for a general scalar field with general $f(ϕ)$-coupling, and an axion as a massive scalar field with $ϕ^2$-coupling, with the helical electromagnetic field. The $α$-dynamo term appears naturally from the helical coupling in the MHD formulation. In the presence of the electromagnetic coupling, however, the Schrödinger and hydrodynamic formulations of the coherently oscillating axion are {\it not} available for the conventional $ϕ$ coupling; instead, …
AGN jets carry helical magnetic fields, which can affect dark matter if the latter is axionic. This preliminary study shows that, in the presence of strong helical magnetic fields, the nature of the axionic condensate may change and become dark energy. Such dark energy may affect galaxy formation and galactic dynamics, so this possibility should not be ignored when considering axionic dark matter.
We study the evolution of photon polarization during the photon-axion conversion process with focusing on the magnetic field configuration dependence. Most previous studies have been carried out in a conventional model where a network of magnetic domains is considered and each domain has a constant magnetic field. We investigate a more general model where a network of domains is still assumed, but each domain has a helical magnetic field. We find that the asymptotic behavior does not depend on the configuration of magnetic fields. Remarkably, we analytically obtain the asymptotic values of the…
Recent BICEP2 detection of low-multipole B-mode polarization anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background radiation supports the inflationary universe scenario and suggests a large inflaton field range. The latter feature can be achieved with axion fields in the framework of string theory. We present such a helical model which naturally becomes a model with a single cosine potential, and which in turn reduces to the (quadratic) chaotic inflation model in the super-Planckian limit. The slightly smaller tensor/scalar ratio $r$ of models of this type provides a signature of the periodic nature o…
We review results from QCD axion string and domain wall simulations and propagate the associated uncertainties, including QCD uncertainties, into the calculation of the axion relic density. We compare two different sets of studies and, using cosmological constraints, perform statistical inference on the axion mass window in the post-inflationary Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking scenario. For dark matter axions in recent simulations inferring a moderately infrared-dominated spectrum, this leads to a median dark matter axion mass of 0.50 meV, while the 95% credible interval at highest posterior de…
We study the dual production of helical Abelian gauge fields and chiral fermions through the Chern-Simons (CS) coupling with a pseudo-scalar inflaton in the presence of a chiral anomaly. Through the CS term, the motion of the inflaton induces a tachyonic instability for one of the two helicities of the gauge field. We show that the resulting helical gauge field necessarily leads to the production of chiral fermions by deforming their Fermi sphere into discrete Landau levels. The population of the lowest Landau level leads to a chiral asymmetry as inferred from the chiral anomaly, while the hig…
We show that when the QCD axion is directly coupled to quarks with $c_q/f \, \partial_μa \, \bar{q} γ^μγ^5 q$, such as in DFSZ models, the dominant production mechanism in the early universe at temperatures $1 \, {\rm GeV}\lesssim T \lesssim 100 \,{\rm GeV}$ is obtained via $q \bar{q} \leftrightarrow g a$ and $q g \leftrightarrow q a$, where $g$ are gluons. Different heavy quarks $q_i$ can produce a thermal axion background that decouples at a temperature $T_i$: (1) top quark at $T_t \lesssim 100 \, {\rm GeV}$ for $f/c_t \lesssim 3\times 10^8 {\rm GeV}$; (2) bottom quark at $T_b \lesssim m_b$,…
An axion-like particle (ALP) with mass $m_ϕ\sim 10^{-15}$eV oscillates with frequency $\sim$1 Hz. This mass scale lies in an open window of astrophysical constraints, and appears naturally as a consequence of grand unification (GUT) in string/M-theory. However, with a GUT-scale decay constant such an ALP overcloses the Universe, and cannot solve the strong CP problem. In this paper, we present a two axion model in which the 1 Hz ALP constitutes the entirety of the dark matter (DM) while the QCD axion solves the strong CP problem but contributes negligibly to the DM relic density. The mechanism…
The abundance of the QCD axion is known to be suppressed if the Hubble parameter during inflation, $H_{\rm inf}$, is lower than the QCD scale, and if the inflation lasts sufficiently long. We show that the tight upper bound on the inflation scale can be significantly relaxed if the eternal old inflation is driven by the standard-model Higgs field trapped in a false vacuum at large field values. Specifically, $H_{\rm inf}$ can be larger than $100\,$GeV if the false vacuum is located above the intermediate scale. We also discuss the slow-roll inflation after the tunneling from the false vacuum t…
We explore the cosmological sensitivity to the amplitude of isocurvature fluctuations that would be caused by axions in the "anthropic window" where the axion decay constant f_a >> 10^12 GeV and the initial misalignment angle Theta_i << 1. In a minimal Lambda-CDM cosmology extended with subdominant scale-invariant isocurvature fluctuations, existing data constrain the isocurvature fraction to alpha < 0.09 at 95% C.L. If no signal shows up, Planck can improve this constraint to 0.042 while an ultimate CMB probe limited only by cosmic variance in both temperature and E-polarisation can reach 0.0…
Axions are among the best motivated dark matter candidates. Their production in the early Universe by the vacuum misalignment mechanism gives rise to isocurvature perturbations, which are constrained by cosmic microwave background measurements. In this paper, we compute the axion isocurvature power spectrum using spectral expansion in the stochastic Starobinsky-Yokoyama formalism, which captures non-linear effects in the axion dynamics. In contrast to most of the existing literature, we focus on high inflationary Hubble rates of order $10^{13}~{\rm GeV}$, and demonstrate that there is a signif…
Motivated by a possible $\sim$ eV-mass solar axion explanation to excess events recently detected by the XENON1T experiment, I revisit and update cosmological constraints on axions in this mass range. I find that of the allowed XENON1T mass window (0.1 - 4.1 eV for DFSZ axions and 46 - 56 eV for KSVZ axions), only 0.1 - 0.35 eV remains viable at 95% confidence given current cosmological probes. If a 0.35 eV DFSZ axion existed, it would be detectable at ${\sim}7σ$ via two independent physical effects with the next-generation CMB-S4 experiment. Conversely, even a combination of CMB-S4 with futur…
We point out an enhancement of the pair production rate of charged fermions in a strong electric field in the presence of time dependent classical axion-like background field, which we call axion assisted Schwinger effect. While the standard Schwinger production rate is proportional to $\exp(-π(m^2+p_T^2 )/E)$, with $m$ and $p_T$ denoting the fermion mass and its momentum transverse to the electric field $E$, the axion assisted Schwinger effect can be enhanced at large momenta to $\exp(-πm^2/E)$. The origin of this enhancement is a coupling between the fermion spin and its momentum, induced by…
We investigate the generation of seed magnetic field through the Chern-Simons coupling between the U(1) gauge field and an axion field that commences to oscillate at various epoch, depending on the mass scale. We address axions which begin oscillation during inflation, reheating, and also the radiation dominated era after the thermalization of the Universe. We study the resonant generation mechanisms and highlight that a small oscillation time scale with respect to that of the cosmic expansion can lead to an efficient generation of (hyper) magnetic field via resonant generation, even for ${\ca…
There has been a growing evidence for the existence of magnetic fields in the extra-galactic regions, while the attempt to associate their origin with the inflationary epoch alone has been found extremely challenging. We therefore take into account the consistent post-inflationary evolution of the magnetic fields that are originated from vacuum fluctuations during inflation. In the model of our interest, the electromagnetic (EM) field is coupled to a pseudo-scalar inflaton $ϕ$ through the characteristic term $ϕF\tilde F$, breaking the conformal invariance. This interaction dynamically breaks t…
We study helical phase inflation in supergravity theory in details. The inflation is driven by the phase component of a complex field along helical trajectory. The helicoid structure originates from the monodromy of superpotential with an singularity at origin. We show that such monodromy can be formed by integrating out heavy fields in supersymmetric field theory. The supergravity corrections to the potential provide strong field stabilizations for the scalars except inflaton, therefore the helical phase inflation accomplishes the "monodromy inflation" within supersymmetric field theory. The …
The characteristic axion couplings could be generated via effective couplings between the Standard Model (SM) fermions to a pseudo-Goldstone from a high-scale $U(1)$ Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking. Assuming that the UV-induced effective operators generate necessary couplings before the PQ symmetry breaking, and any low-scale couplings to the SM are restricted to the Yukawa sector, three minimal natural scenarios can be formulated, which provides a connection between the QCD-axions and mediators at the GUT/string scales. We find that the PQ symmetry breaking scale could be about $10^{15}$ …
We explore the inflationary dynamics leading to formation of closed domain walls in course of evolution of an axion like particle (ALP) field whose Peccei-Quinn-like phase transition occurred well before inflationary epoch. Evolving after inflation, the domain walls may leave their imprint in stochastic gravitational waves background, in the frequency range accessible for the pulsar timing array measurements. We derive the characteristic strain power spectrum produced by the distribution of the closed domain walls and relate it with the recently reported NANOGrav signal excess. We found that t…
The cosmic microwave background (CMB) places strong constraints on models of dark matter (DM) that deviate from standard cold DM (CDM), and on initial conditions beyond the scalar adiabatic mode. Here, the full \textit{Planck} data set (including temperature, $E$-mode polarisation, and lensing deflection) is used to test the possibility that some fraction of the DM is composed of ultralight axions (ULAs). This represents the first use of CMB lensing to test the ULA model. We find no evidence for a ULA component in the mass range $10^{-33}\leq m_a\leq 10^{-24}\text{ eV}$. We put percent-level c…
We review the landscape of QCD axion models. Theoretical constructions that extend the window for the axion mass and couplings beyond conventional regions are highlighted and classified. Bounds from cosmology, astrophysics and experimental searches are reexamined and updated.
A model of high scale inflation is presented where the radial part of the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) field with a non-minimal coupling to gravity plays the role of the inflaton, and the QCD axion is the dark matter. A quantum fluctuation of $\mathcal{O}(H/2π)$ in the axion field will result in a smaller angular fluctuation if the PQ field is sitting at a larger radius during inflation than in the vacuum. This changes the effective axion decay constant, $f_a$, during inflation and dramatically reduces the production of isocurvature modes. This mechanism opens up a new window in parameter space where an …
We revisit the isocurvature density perturbations induced by quantum fluctuations of the axion field by extending a recently developed analytic method and approximations to a time-dependent scalar potential, which enables us to follow the evolution of the axion until it starts to oscillate. We find that, as the initial misalignment angle approaches the hilltop of the potential, the isocurvature perturbations become significantly enhanced, while the non-Gaussianity parameter increases slowly but surely. As a result, the isocurvature constraint on the inflation scale is tightened as Hinf < O(100…
In the simplest picture, the masses of string axions populating the axiverse depend on two parameters: the supersymmetry breaking scale $M_{\rm susy}$ and the action $S$ of the string instantons responsible for breaking the axion shift symmetry. In this work, we explore whether cosmological data can be used to probe these two parameters. Adopting string-inspired flat priors on $\log_{10}M_{\rm susy}$ and $S$, and imposing that $M_{\rm susy}$ be sub-Planckian, we find $S=198\pm28$. These bounds suggest that cosmological data complemented with string-inspired priors select a quite narrow axion m…
A new mechanism for producing axion dark matter is proposed. By invoking low-scale inflation and a kinetic mixing between the axion and the inflaton, it is shown that the axion is driven to a field point slightly displaced from the potential minimum, which can give rise to the observed dark matter abundance. In this framework, different combinations of the axion and inflaton fields play various cosmological roles, including generating the cosmological perturbations, reheating the universe, and serving as dark matter. The kinetic mixing also relates the dark matter lifetime with the reheating t…
We study axion dark matter production from a misalignment mechanism in scenarios featuring a general nonstandard cosmology. Before the onset of Big Bang nucleosynthesis, the energy density of the universe is dominated by a particle field $ϕ$ described by a general equation of state $ω$. The ensuing enhancement of the Hubble expansion rate decreases the temperature at which axions start to oscillate, opening this way the possibility for axions heavier than in the standard window. This is the case for kination, or in general for scenarios with $ω> 1/3$. However, if $ω< 1/3$, as in the case of an…
Among solutions of the strong CP problem, the "invisible" axion in the narrow axion window is argued to be the remaining possibility among natural solutions on the smallness of $\barθ$. Related to the gravity spoil of global symmetries, some prospective invisible axions from theory point of view are discussed. In all these discussions, including the observational possibility, cosmological constraints must be included.
We explore some particle physics implications of the growing evidence for a helical primordial magnetic field (PMF). From the interactions of magnetic monopoles and the PMF, we derive an upper bound on the monopole number density, $n(t_0) < 1 \times 10^{-20}~{\rm cm}^{-3}$, which is a "primordial" analog of the Parker bound for the survival of galactic magnetic fields. Our bound is weaker than existing constraints, but it is derived under independent assumptions. We also show how improved measurements of the PMF at different redshifts can lead to further constraints on magnetic monopoles. Axio…
In this work we compute the production of magnetic fields in models of axion inflation coupled to the hypercharge sector of the Standard Model through a Chern-Simons interaction term. We make the simplest choice of a quadratic inflationary potential and use lattice simulations to calculate the magnetic field strength, helicity and correlation length at the end of inflation. For small values of the axion-gauge field coupling strength the results agree with no-backreaction calculations and estimates found in the literature. For larger couplings the helicity of the magnetic field differs from the…
Conventional approaches to probing axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) typically rely on a coupling to photons. However, if this coupling is extremely weak, ALPs become invisible and are effectively decoupled from the Standard Model. Here we show that such invisible axions, which are viable candidates for dark matter, can produce a stochastic gravitational wave background in the early universe. This signal is generated in models where the invisible axion couples to a dark gauge boson that experiences a tachyonic instability when the axion begins to oscillate. Incidentally, the same mechanis…
The Peccei-Quinn mechanism presents a neat solution to the strong CP problem. As a by-product, it provides an ideal dark matter candidate, "the axion", albeit with a tiny mass. Axions therefore can act as dark radiation if excited with large momenta after the end of inflation. Nevertheless, the recent measurement of relativistic degrees of freedom from cosmic microwave background radiation strictly constrains the abundance of such extra relativistic species. We show that ultra-relativistic axions can be abundantly produced if the Peccei-Quinn field was initially displaced from the minimum of t…
A complete numerical calculation of the temperature anisotropies and polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in the presence of a stochastic helical magnetic field is presented which includes the contributions due to scalar, vector and tensor modes. The correlation functions of the magnetic field contributions are calculated numerically including a Gaussian window function to effectively cut off the magnetic field spectrum due to damping. Apart from parity-even correlations the helical nature of the magnetic field induces parity-odd correlations between the E- and B-mode of polar…
A fraction of light scalar dark matter, especially axions, may organize into Bose-Einstein condensates, gravitationally bound clumps, "boson stars", and be present in large number in galactic halos today. We compute the expected number of gravitational microlensing events of clumps composed of the ordinary QCD axion and axion-like-particles and derive microlensing constraints from the EROS-2 survey and the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam observation. We perform a detailed lensing calculation, including the finite lens and source size effects in our analysis. We constrain the axion mass in terms of th…

We suggest a novel experimental method to search for axion dark matter with an optical ring cavity. Our cavity measures the difference of the resonant frequencies between two circular-polarizations of the laser beam. Its technical design adopts double-pass configuration to realize a null experiment and reject environmental common-mode noises. We reveal that it can probe the axion-photon coupling constant with a broad range of axion mass $10^{-17} \text{eV} \lesssim m \lesssim 10^{-10} \text{eV}$, up to several orders of magnitude beyond the current limits. We expect that this cavity experiment…
Sensitive dark matter (DM) experiments can be well exploited beyond their designated targets, allowing to explore a breadth of physics topics. As we discuss, future large direct DM detection experiments constitute impressive telescopes, complementary to conventional neutrino detectors. This opens a new window into neutrino astronomy, including puzzles such as the origin of supermassive black holes and topics like supernova forecast. Furthermore, DM experiments can act as effective instruments for multimessenger astronomy. This is well illustrated by exploration of relativistic axions from tran…

We discuss the generation of primordial magnetic fields during inflation in the dilaton-axion electromagnetism, in which the dilaton and axion dynamics are introduced in terms of two time dependent functions of the cosmic scale factor, $I(a) F^2/4$ and $J(a) F\tilde{F}/4$, respectively, where $F$ is the electromagnetic field strength and $\tilde{F}$ is its dual. We study the form of $J(a)$ that can generate a large seed magnetic field in the weak coupling regime, $I(a)<1$. Although the $J(a)$ function is model dependent, the axion-photon coupling indeed opens up a new window for a successful i…
We study the new mechanism of the axion production suggested recently in [1,2]. This mechanism is based on the so-called Axion Quark Nugget (AQN) dark matter model, which was originally invented to explain the similarity of the dark and visible cosmological matter densities. We perform numerical simulations to evaluate the axion flux on the Earth's surface. We examine annual and daily modulations, which have been studied previously and are known to occur for any type of dark matter. We also discuss a novel type of short time enhancements which are unique to the AQN model: the statistical fluct…
We study cosmological effects of explicit Peccei-Quinn breaking on the QCD axion dark matter. We find that the axion abundance decreases or increases significantly depending on the initial position, even for a tiny Peccei-Quinn breaking that satisfies the experimental bound of the neutron electric dipole measurements. If the axion first starts to oscillate around a wrong vacuum and if it gets trapped there until the false vacuum disappears due to non-perturbative QCD effects, its abundance increases significantly and is independent of the decay constant $f_a$, as first pointed out in [JHEP 06 …
