We report on doping dependencies of structural parameters and superconducting transition temperatures in the solid solution (Ba1-xKx)Fe2As2. As the main effect of doping on the crystal structure, we find linear decreasing As-Fe-As bond angles and Fe-Fe distances, equivalent to an elongation of the FeAs4 tetrahedra along [001]. The structural changes are intimately coupled to the electronic states at the Fermi level, because the most relevant Fe-3dx2-y2 orbitals are strongly affected by the As-Fe-As bond angle. Superconductivity is present over the whole doping range in (Ba1-xKx)Fe2As2 with a maximum Tc of 38 K at x ~ 0.4. The superconducting transitions in the orthorhombic compounds (Ba0.9K0.1)Fe2As2 (Tc ~ 3 K) and (Ba0.8K0.2)Fe2As2 (Tc ~ 25 K) is strong evidence for the coexistence of superconductivity with the structurally distorted and potentially magnetically ordered state in the BaFe2As2 family of iron arsenide superconductors.
BaFe2As2 is the parent compound of the '122' iron arsenide superconductors and crystallizes with the tetragonal ThCr2Si2 type structure, space group I4/mmm. A spin density wave transition at 140 K is accompanied by a symmetry reduction to space group Fmmm and simultaneously by antiferromagnetic ordering. Hole-doping induces superconductivity in Ba1-xKxFe2As2 with a maximum Tc of 38 K at x = 0.4. The upper critical fields approach 75 T with rather small anisotropy of Hc2. At low potassium concentrations (x <= 0.2), superconductivity apparently co-exists with the orthorhombic distorted and magne…
The nature of spin-density wave and its relation with superconductivity are crucial issues in the newly discovered Fe-based high temperature superconductors. Particularly it is unclear whether the superconducting phase and spin density wave (SDW) are truly exclusive from each other as suggested by certain experiments. With angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we here report exchange splittings of the band structures in Sr1-xKxFe2As2 (x=0,0.1,0.2), and the non-rigid-band behaviors of the splitting. Our data on single crystalline superconducting samples unambiguously prove that SDW and sup…
The ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2 becomes superconducting by hole doping, which was achieved by partial substitution of the barium site with potassium. We have discovered bulk superconductivity up to Tc = 38 K in (Ba1-xKx)Fe2As2 with x = 0.4. The parent compound BaFe2As2 as well as KFe2As2 both crystallize in the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure, which consists of (FeAs)- iron arsenide layers separated by barium or potassium ions. BaFe2As2 is a poor metal and exhibits a SDW anomaly at 140 K. By substituting Ba2+ for K+ ions we have introduced holes in the (FeAs)- layers, which suppress the …
It is widely believed that, in contrast to its electron doped counterparts, the hole doped compound Ba1-xKxFe2As2 exhibits a mesoscopic phase separation of magnetism and superconductivity in the underdoped region of the phase diagram. Here, we report a combined high-resolution x-ray powder diffraction and volume sensitive muon spin rotation study of underdoped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (0 \leq x \leq 0.25) showing that this paradigm is wrong. Instead we find a microscopic coexistence of the two forms of order. A competition of magnetism and superconductivity is evident from a significant reduction of the …
We have synthesized the polycrystalline samples of Eu1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0-1) and carried out systematic characterization using x-ray diffraction, ac & dc magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements. We have seen a clear signature of the coexistence of superconducting transition (Tc = 5.5 K) with SDW ordering in our under doped sample viz. x = 0.15. The spin density wave transition observed in EuFe2As2 get completely suppressed at x = 0.3 and superconductivity arises below 20 K. Superconducting transition temperature Tc increases with increase in K content and a maximum Tc = …
The discovery of high temperature superconductivity in La[O1-xFx]FeAs at the beginning of this year [1] has generated much excitement and has led to the rapid discovery of similar compounds with as high as 55 K transition temperatures [2]. The high superconducting transition temperatures are seemingly incompatible with the electron-phonon driven pairing of conventional superconductors, resulting in wide speculation as to the mechanism and nature of the superconductivity in these materials. Here we report results of the first scanning tunneling microscopy study of the 32 K superconductor (Sr1-x…
Detailed knowledge of the phase diagram and the nature of the competing magnetic and superconducting phases is imperative for an understanding of the physics of iron-based superconductivity. Here, we show using thermodynamic probes that the phase diagram of the first discovered, and highest Tc, 122-type material, Ba1-xKxFe2As2 is in fact much richer than previously reported. Inside the usual stripe-type magnetic order with C2-symmetry, we find a small pocket of a tetragonal, C4-symmetric phase, which surprisingly reverts back to the C2-phase at or slightly below the superconducting transition.…
We studied the effect of hydrostatic pressure (P) on the structural phase transitions and superconductivity in the ternary and pseudo-ternary iron arsenides CaFe2As2, BaFe2As2, and (Ba0.55K0.45)Fe2As2, by means of measurements of electrical resistivity (rho) in the 1.8 - 300 K temperature (T) range, pressures up to 20 kbar, and magnetic fields up to 9 T. CaFe2As2 and BaFe2As2 (lightly doped with Sn) display structural phase transitions near 170 K and 85 K, respectively, and do not exhibit superconductivity in ambient pressure, while K-doped (Ba0.55K0.45)Fe2As2 is superconducting for T < 30 K. …
The solid solution of antimonide-oxides Ba1-xKxTi2Sb2O (0 < x < 1) has been synthesized by solid-state reactions and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (CeCr2Si2C-type structure; P4/mmm, Z = 1). The crystal structure consists of Ti2Sb2O-layers that are stacked with layers of barium atoms along the c-axis. BaTi2Sb2O is a known superconductor with a critical temperature (Tc) of 1.2 K. Substitution of barium through potassium raises Tc up to 6.1 K at 12 % potassium, while no superconductivity emerges with concentrations higher than 20 %. Anomalies in electrical transport and magnetic susce…
Monoclinic crystal structure of the undoped BaBiO3 can be described as a cubic perovskite distorted by a frozen breathing and tilting phonon modes of BiO6 octahedra. The phonon mode softening is experimentally observed [M. Braden et al., Europhysics Letters (EPL) 34, 531 (1996)] in Ba1-xKxBiO3 through potassium doping followed by a transition into an ideal cubic perovskite structure at x = 0.37 close to the appearance of superconductivity. In our previous paper [D. Korotin et al., Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter 24, 415603 (2012)] we demonstrated that it is necessary to take into account …
We performed a Laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on a wide doping range of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (BaK) and precisely determined the doping evolution of the superconducting (SC) gaps in this compound. The gap size of the outer hole Fermi surface (FS) sheet around the Brillioun zone (BZ) center shows an abrupt drop with overdoping (for x > 0.6) while the inner and middle FS gaps roughly scale with Tc. This is accompanied by the simultaneous disappearance of the electron FS sheet with similar orbital character at the BZ corner. These results browse the different contributions …
To gain insight into the unconventional superconductivity of Fe-pnictides with no electron pockets, we measure the thermal conductivity $κ$ and penetration depth $λ$ in the heavily hole-doped regime of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. The residual thermal conductivity $(κ/T)_{T \rightarrow 0\,{\rm K}}$ and $T$-dependence of $λ$ consistently indicate the fully gapped superconductivity at $x=0.76$ and the (line) nodal superconductivity at higher hole concentrations. The magnitudes of $\fracκ{T}\cdot T_c|_{T \rightarrow 0\,{\rm K}}$ and $\frac{dλ}{d(T/T_c)}$ at low temperatures, both of which are det…
Polycrystalline samples of underdoped (Ba1-xKx)Fe2As2 (x<=0.4) were synthesized and studied by x-ray powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and 57Fe-Moessbauer-spectroscopy. The structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic lattice symmetry shifts towards lower temperatures, becomes less pronounced at x = 0.1-0.2 and is no longer present at x = 0.3. Bulk superconductivity is observed in all samples except (Ba0.9K0.1)Fe2As2 by resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Specific heat data show a broad SDW phase transition in (Ba0.9K0.1)Fe2As2, which i…
The recent discovery of superconductivity in oxypnictides with the critical temperature (TC) higher than McMillan limit of 39 K (the theoretical maximum predicted by Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory) has generated great excitement. Theoretical calculations indicate that the electron-phonon interaction is not strong enough to give rise to such high transition temperatures, while strong ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic fluctuations have been proposed to be responsible. However, superconductivity and magnetism in pnictide superconductors show a strong sensitivity to the lattice, suggesting a…
We report high-sensitivity microwave measurements of the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ and quasiparticle scattering rate $1/τ$ in several single crystals of hole-doped Fe-based superconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($x\approx 0.55$). While power-law temperature dependence of $λ_{ab}$ with the power $\sim 2$ is found in crystals with large $1/τ$, we observe exponential temperature dependence of superfluid density consistent with the existence of fully opened two gaps in the cleanest crystal we studied. The difference may be a consequence of different level of disorder inherent in the…

We present a detailed investigation of the electronic phase diagram of effectively charge compensated Ba1-xKx(Fe1-yCoy)2As2 with x/2 = y. Our experimental study by means of x-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, muon spin relaxation and ac susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples is complemented by density functional electronic structure calculations. For low substitution levels of x/2 = y \< 0.13, the system displays an orthorhombically distorted and antiferromagnetically ordered ground state. The low temperature structural and magnetic order parameters are successively redu…
We have characterized an electron-irradiated Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0.53) single-crystal using two different experimental techniques: magneto-optic measurements and microwave measurements. The crystal has been measured before as well as after the 2.5 MeV electron irradiation process. After irradiation it was annealed in a number of steps, between 90 deg C and 180 deg C, and measured after each annealing step. Most microwave measurements were performed by means of a copper cavity, taking advantage of the TE011 and TM110 modes, allowing for the determination of the London penetration depths changes …
We report the results of a systematic investigation of the phase diagram of the iron-based superconductor, Ba1-xKxFe2As2, from x = 0 to x = 1.0 using high resolution neutron and x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. The polycrystalline samples were prepared with an estimated compositional variation of \Deltax <~ 0.01, allowing a more precise estimate of the phase boundaries than reported so far. At room temperature, Ba1-xKxFe2As2 crystallizes in a tetragonal structure with the space group symmetry of I4/mmm, but at low doping, the samples undergo a coincident first-order structural…
Based on first-principles FLAPW-GGA calculation, we have investigated electronic structure of newly discovered oxygen-free 38K superconductor Ba1-xKxFe2As2 in comparison with parent phase - tetragonal ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2. The density of states, magnetic properties, near-Fermi bands compositions, together with Sommerfeld coefficients and molar Pauli paramagnetic susceptibility are evaluated. The results allow us to classify these systems as quasi-two-dimensional ionic metals, where the conduction is strongly anisotropic, only happening on the (Fe-As) layers. According to our calculat…
The thermal conductivity kappa of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba1-xKxFe2As2 was measured for heat currents parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c axis at temperatures down to 50 mK and in magnetic fields up to 15 T. Measurements were performed on samples with compositions ranging from optimal doping (x = 0.34; Tc = 39 K) down to dopings deep into the region where antiferromagnetic order coexists with superconductivity (x = 0.16; Tc = 7 K). In zero field, there is no residual linear term in kappa(T) as T goes to 0 at any doping, whether for in-plane or inter-plane transport. This s…
75As NMR measurements were performed as a function of temperature and doping in (Eu1-xKx)Fe2As2 (x=0,0.38,0.5,0.7) samples. The large Eu2+ moments and their fluctuations are found to dominate the 75As NMR properties. The 75As nuclei close to the Eu2+ moments likely have a very short spin-spin relaxation time (T2) and are wiped out of our measurement window. The 75As nuclei relatively far from Eu2+ moments are probed in this study. Increasing the Eu content progressively decreases the signal intensity with no signal found for the full-Eu sample (x=0). The large 75As NMR linewidth arises from an…
The two-loop temperature hysteresis of integrated intensity of Raman scattering of light is explained theoretically for a line of frequency 50 cm-1 in a superconducting oxide Ba1-xKxBiO3 single crystal.
We report a high resolution neutron diffraction investigation of the coupling of structural and magnetic transitions in Ba1xKxFe2As2. The tetragonal-orthorhombic and antiferromagnetic transitions are suppressed with potassium-doping, falling to zero at x <~ 0.3. However, unlike Ba(Fe1xCox)2As2, the two transitions are first-order and coincident over the entire phase diagram, with a biquadratic coupling of the two order parameters. The phase diagram is refined showing that the onset of superconductivity is at x = 0.133 with all three phases coexisting until x >~ 0.24.
We report the results of a zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-muSR) study of superconducting Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (0.5 < x < 0.9) in search of weak spontaneous internal magnetic fields associated with proposed time-reversal-symmetry breaking mixed pairing states. The measurements were performed on polycrystalline samples, which do not exhibit the mesoscopic phase separation previously observed in single crystals of Ba1-xKxFe2As2. No evidence of spontaneous internal magnetic fields is found in any of the samples at temperatures down to T ~ 0.02 K.
This comment addresses criticisms of our PRL 82 (1999) p. 4532-4535 (cond-mat/9904288) raised by Woodfield et al. in their recent PRL. We find that the critical fields in single crystals of Ba1-xKxBiO3 (x = 0.4) have anomalous temperature dependecies which suggests that the superconducting phase transition in this material is not of order II.
Local fluctuations in the distribution of dopant atoms are a suspected cause of nanoscale electronic disorder or phase separation observed within the pnictide superconductors. Atom probe tomography results present the first direct observations of dopant nano-clustering in a K-doped 122-phase pnictides. First-principles calculations suggest the coexistence of static magnetism and superconductivity on a lattice parameter length scale over a large range of doping concentrations. Collectively, our results provide evidence for a mixed scenario of phase coexistence and phase separation originating f…
Measurements on magnetization and relaxation have been carried out on an optimally doped Ba$_{0.59}$K$_{0.47}$BiO$_{3+δ}$ single crystal with $T_c$ = 31.3 K. Detailed analysis is undertaken on the data. Both the dynamical relaxation and conventional relaxation have been measured leading to the self-consistent determination of the magnetization relaxation rate. It is found that the data are well described by the collective pinning model leading to the glassy exponent of about $μ\approx$ 1.64 to 1.68 with the magnetic fields of 1 and 3 T. The analysis based on Maley's method combining with the c…
In this article, we review our recent studies of microwave penetration depth, lower critical fields, and quasiparticle conductivity in the superconducting state of Fe-arsenide superconductors. High-sensitivity microwave surface impedance measurements of the in-plane penetration depth in single crystals of electron-doped PrFeAsO1-y (y~0.1) and hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x~0.55) are presented. In clean crystals of Ba1-xKxFe2As2, as well as in PrFeAsO1-y crystals, the penetration depth shows flat temperature dependence at low temperatures, indicating that the superconducting gap opens all over the…
Co-doping of lanthanum and phosphorus in CaFe2As2 induces superconductivity at 45 K. This superconducting transition temperature is higher than the 38 K transition in Ba1-xKxFe2As2, which is the maximum found thus far among the 122 phases. Superconductivity with a substantial shielding volume fraction was observed at 0.12 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.18 and y = 0.06 in Ca1-xLaxFe2(As1-yPy)2. The superconducting phase of the present system seems to be not adjacent to an antiferromagnetic phase.
Anisotropic superconducting properties including the upper critical field Hc2, thermal activation energy U0, and critical current density Jc are systematically studied in a large Ca1-xLaxFeAs2 single crystal (x ~ 0.18). The obtained Hc2 bears a moderate anisotropy gamma of approximately 2-4.2, located between those of '122' Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (1 < gamma < 2) and '1111' NdFeAsO1-xFx (5 < gamma < 9.2). Both the magnitude of U0 and its field dependence are very similar to those of NdFeAsO1-xFx, also indicating anisotropic superconductivity. Moreover, high and anisotropic Jc's exceeding 10^5 A/cm2 have…
The distribution of valence electrons in metals usually follows the symmetry of an ionic lattice. Modulations of this distribution often occur when those electrons are not stable with respect to a new electronic order, such as spin or charge density waves. Electron density waves have been observed in many families of superconductors[1-3], and are often considered to be essential for superconductivity to exist[4]. Recent measurements[5-9] seem to show that the properties of the iron pnictides[10, 11] are in good agreement with band structure calculations that do not include additional ordering,…
We report measurements of Hc2(T) up to 85 Tesla on Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 single crystals and FeSe1-xTex films tuned by doping and strain. We observed an Hc2 enhancement by nearly 25 T at 30 K for the optimally-doped Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 as compared to the previous results and extraordinarily high slopes dHc2/dT = 250-500 T/K near Tc in FeSe1-xTex indicating an almost complete suppression of the orbital pair-breaking. Theoretical analysis of Hc2(T) in FeSe1-xTex and the optimally doped Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 predicts an inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state for H//ab and T < 3-10 K, and shows that Hc2 in…
Ag-sheathed CaKFe4As4 superconducting tapes have been fabricated via the ex-situ powder-in-tube method. Thermal and X-ray diffraction analyses suggest that the CaKFe4As4 phase is unstable at high temperatures. It decomposes into the CaAgAs phase which reacts strongly with the silver sheath. We therefore sintered the tape at 500C and obtain a transport critical current density Jc(4.2 K, 0 T)~ 2.7x10^4 A/cm2. The pinning potential derived from magnetoresistance measurements is one order of magnitude lower than that of the (Ba/Sr)1-xKxFe2As2 tapes. Combining with the scanning electron microscopy …
Kagome lattice offers unique opportunities for the exploration of unusual quantum states of correlated electrons. Here, we report on the observation of superconductivity in a kagome single crystal Pd3P2S8 when a semiconducting to metallic transition is driven by pressure. High-pressure resistance measurements show that the metallization and superconductivity are simultaneously observed at about 11 GPa. With increasing pressure, the superconducting critical temperature Tc is monotonously enhanced from 2.6 K to a maximum 7.7 K at ~52 GPa. Interestingly, superconductivity retains when the pressur…
We have studied the intrinsic normal and superconducting properties of the oxypnictide LaFePO. These samples exhibit bulk superconductivity and the evidence suggests that stoichiometric LaFePO is indeed superconducting, in contrast to other reports. We find that superconductivity is independent of the interplane residual resistivity $ρ_0$ and discuss the implications of this on the nature of the superconducting order parameter. Finally we find that, unlike $T_c$, other properties in single-crystal LaFePO including the resistivity and magnetoresistance, can be very sensitive to disorder.
We report pressure-induced superconductivity in a single crystal of CaFe2As2. At atmospheric pressure, this material is antiferromagnetic below 170 K but under an applied pressure of 0.69 GPa becomes superconducting, with a transition temperature Tc exceeding 10 K. The rate of Tc suppression with applied magnetic field is -0.7 K/T, giving an extrapolated zero-temperature upper critical field of 10-14T.
Here we report bulk superconductivity in BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 single crystals below Tc = 22 K, as demonstrated by resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat data. Hall data indicate that the dominant carriers are electrons, as expected from simple chemical reasoning. This is the first example of superconductivity induced by electron doping in this family of materials. In contrast to the cuprates, the BaFe2As2 system appears to tolerate considerable disorder in the FeAs planes. First principles calculations for BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 indicate the inter-band scattering due to Co is weak.
We use c-axis resistivity and magnetoresistance measurements to study the interplay between antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) ordering in underdoped RBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} (R = Lu, Y) single crystals. Both orders are found to emerge from an anisotropic 3D metallic state, upon which antiferromagnetism opposes superconductivity by driving the doped holes towards localization. Despite the competition, the superconductivity sets in before the AF order is completely destroyed and coexists with latter in a certain range of hole doping. We find also that strong magnetic fields affect the AF-S…
Single crystals of SrFe2-xPtxAs2 (0 < x < 0.36) were grown using the self flux solution method and characterized using x-ray crystallography, electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. The magnetic/structural transition is suppressed with increasing Pt concentration, with superconductivity seen over the range 0.08 < x < 0.36 with a maximum transition temperature Tc of 16 K at x = 0.16. The shape of the phase diagram and the changes to the lattice parameters are similar to the effects of other group VIII elements Ni and Pd, however the higher transition tempe…
We have successfully grown single crystalline NaFeAs with cobalt or phosphor doping. Bulk superconductivity occurs in NaFe$_{0.95}$Co$_{0.05}$As at 19 K while much higher transition temperature is observed in NaFeAs$_{0.8}$P$_{0.2}$, in which the Tc of 33 K is even higher than the highest value realized by applying pressure in NaFeAs and all other isoelectronic element substituted samples. We discuss these behaviours by comparison with 122 and 1111 systems. We hope that our findings will help improve our understanding of iron-based superconductivity.
The crystal structure and physical properties of BaFe2As2, BaCo2As2, and BaNi2As2 single crystals are surveyed. BaFe2As2 gives a magnetic and structural transition at TN = 132(1) K, BaCo2As2 is a paramagnetic metal, while BaNi2As2 has a structural phase transition at T0 = 131 K, followed by superconductivity below Tc = 0.69 K. The bulk superconductivity in Co-doped BaFe2As2 below Tc = 22 K is demonstrated by resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat data. In contrast to the cuprates, the Fe-based system appears to tolerate considerable disorder in the transition metal layers. Fir…
We present a comprehensive study of the low-temperature heat capacity and thermal expansion of single crystals of the hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 series (0<x<1) and the end-members RbFe2As2 and CsFe2As2. A large increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient is observed with both decreasing band filling and isovalent substitution (K, Rb, Cs) revealing a strong enhancement of electron correlations and the possible proximity of these materials to a Mott insulator. This trend is well reproduced theoretically by our Density-Functional Theory + Slave-Spin (DFT+SS) calculations, confirming that 122-iron pnicti…
The electrical resistivity ρ(T) and heat capacity C(T) on single crystals of SrNi2As2 and EuNi2As2 are reported. While there is no evidence for a structural transition in either compound, SrNi2As2 is found to be a bulk superconductor at T_c=0.62 K with a Sommerfeld coefficient of γ= 8.7 mJ/mol K^2 and a small upper critical field H_{c2} \sim 200 Oe. No superconductivity was found in EuNi2As2 above 0.4 K, but anomalies in ρand C reveal that magnetic order associated with the Eu^{2+} magnetic moments occurs at T_m = 14 K.
We have successfully grown the single crystal of a low carrier density system Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ which crystallizes in the cubic crystal structure with the space group Pm3n. Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ exhibits super conductivity below 2.85 K as determined from the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The bulk measurements indicate multiband superconductivity in this low carrier system. Hall effect measurements show that the Hall coefficient R$_H$ is positive and it decreases rapidly with temperature which is highly unusual. The simple estimation of the ca…
A connection between creation of toroidal moments and breaking of the relativistic crystalline group associated to a given crystal, is presented in this paper. Indeed, if magnetoelectric effects exist, the interaction between electrons and elementary magnetic cells appears in such a way that the resulting local polarization and magnetization break the local relativistic crystalline symmetry. Therefore, Goldstone bosons, also associated to toroidal moments, are created and, as a consequence, corresponding toroidal phases in crystals. The list of the Shubnikov groups compatible with this kind of…
We review magnetic, superconducting and non-Fermi-liquid properties of the structurally layered heavy-fermion compounds Ce$_n$M$_m$In$_{3n+2m}$ (M=Co, Rh, Ir). These properties suggest d-wave superconductivity and proximity to an antiferromagetic quantum-critical point.
The results of inelastic neutron scattering provide a solution for the crystal field level scheme in PrOs4Sb12 in which the ground state in the cubic crystal field potential of Th symmetry is a Gamma_1 singlet. The conduction electron mass enhancement is consistent with inelastic exchange scattering, and we propose that inelastic quadrupolar, or aspherical Coulomb, scattering is responsible for enhancing the superconducting transition temperature. PrOs4Sb12 appears to be the first compound in which aspherical Coulomb scattering is strong enough to overcome magnetic pair-breaking and increase T…
We systematically studied the transport properties of single crystals of $Eu_{1-x}Sr_xFe_{2-y}$Co$_{y}As_2$. Co doping can suppress the spin-density wave (SDW) ordering and induces a superconducting transition, but a resistivity reentrance due to the antiferromagnetic ordering of $Eu^{2+}$ spins is observed, indicating the competition between antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity. It is striking that the resistivity reentrance can be completely suppressed by external magnetic field (H) because a metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism for $Eu^{2+}$ spins is i…
The suppression of superconductivity by substitution effects has been measured in high quality single crystals of U(Pt_{1-x} Pd_x)_3 with 0 <= x <= 0.002. While the superconducting transition temperature T_c varies linearly with residual resistivity r_0, consistent with pair-breaking by impurity potential scattering, the rate of suppression of T_c with r_0 is much larger for Pd substitution than for other impurity substitutions or by increased defect density. This effect is correlated with an increase in the inelastic scattering coefficient, and may be related to Pd-induced changes in the magn…
Single crystal of Lu$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$ was studied with the tunnel-diode resonator technique in Meissner and mixed states. Temperature dependence of the superfluid density provides strong evidence for the two-gap superconductivity with almost equal contributions from each gap of magnitudes $Δ_1/k_BT_c=1.86$ and $Δ_1/k_BT_c=0.54$. In the vortex state, pinning strength shows unusually strong temperature dependence and is non-monotonic with the magnetic field (peak effect). The irreversibility line is sharply defined and is quite distant from the $H_{c2}(T)$, which hints on to enhanced vortex fluct…
We report superconductivity in single crystals of the new iron-pnictide system BaFe1.9Pt0.1As2 grown by a self-flux solution method and characterized via x-ray, transport, magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. The magnetic ordering associated with a structural transition at 140 K present in BaFe2As2 is completely suppressed by substitution of 5% Fe with Pt and superconductivity is induced at a critical temperature Tc=23 K. Full diamagnetic screening in the magnetic susceptibility and a jump in the specific heat at Tc confirm the bulk nature of the superconducting phase. All properties of th…
High quality single crystals of UPt_3 have been prepared by vertical float-zone refining in ultra-high vacuum. We find that the superconducting transition temperature can be varied systematically by annealing, revealing that the transition temperature intrinsic to UPt_3 is 563 +/- 5 mK. The suppression of the superconducting transition from defects is consistent with a modified Abrikosov-Gor'kov formula that includes anisotropic pairing, Fermi surface anisotropy, and anisotropic scattering by defects.
We report a systematic study on the influence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases of Eu^2+ moments on the superconducting phase upon doping the As site by isovalent P, which acts as chemical pressure on EuFe_2As_2. Bulk superconductivity with transition temperatures of 22 K and 28 K are observed for x=0.16 and 0.20 samples respectively. The Eu ions order antiferromagnetically for x<=0.13, while a crossover is observed for x>=0.22 whereupon the Eu ions order ferromagnetically. Density functional theory based calculations reproduce the observed experimental findings consistently. We di…
We observe superconductivity below a critical temperature TC = 1.8 K in single-crystal Ir3Te8, which also exhibits normal-state diamagnetism and a linear temperature dependence of electrical resistivity for a wide temperature interval, 20 K < T < 700 K. Single-crystal Ir3Te8 also undergoes a structural phase transition at TS = 350 K from a cubic (above TS) to a rhombohedral lattice below TS. Our first-principles electronic structure calculations reveal two bands crossing the Fermi level; despite the three-dimensional lattice, one band is quasi-two-dimensional, and is responsible for the observ…
High resolution measurements of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility are reported for ferromagnetic re-entrant superconductor, ErRh$_{4}$B$_{4}$. Detailed investigation of the coexisting regime reveals unusual temperature-asymmetric and magnetically anisotropic behavior. The superconducting phase appears via a series of discontinuous steps upon warming from the ferromagnetic normal phase, whereas the ferromagnetic phase develops via a gradual transition. A model based on local field inhomogeneity is proposed to explain the observations.
Superconducting behavior has been observed in the Sr2RuO4-Sr3Ru2O7 eutectic system as grown by the flux-feeding floating zone technique. A supercurrent flows across a single interface between Sr2RuO4 and Sr3Ru2O7 areas at distances that are far beyond those expected in a conventional proximity scenario. The current-voltage characteristics within the Sr3Ru2O7 macrodomain, as extracted from the eutectic, exhibit signatures of superconductivity in the bilayered ruthenate. Detailed microstructural, morphological and compositional analyses address issues on the concentration and the size of Sr2RuO4…
The complete scenario of high-Tc superconductivity based on experimental data from electron-tunneling spectroscopy on underdoped, overdoped and Ni-doped Bi2212 single crystals using a break-junction technique is presented. There are two different types of superconductivity in cuprates: superconductivity due to pairing of spinons on charged stripes and magnetic superconductivity mediated by spin-waves. The coherent state of the spinon superconductivity is established via the magnetic superconductivity. In NCCO, there is only the spinon superconductivity and the coherent state is established due…
The effects of pressure up to $\sim 20$ kbar, on the structural phase transition of lightly Sn-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$, as well as on the superconducting transition temperature and upper critical field of (Ba$_{0.55}$K$_{0.45}$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals have been studied. Both transitions decrease with pressure in an almost linear fashion. Under pressure, the upper critical field curve, $H_{c2}(T)$, shifts down in temperature to follow the zero field $T_c$ with very little change in slope.
