Let k be a local field and G the set of k-points of a connected semisimple algebraic k-group of rank one. We describe all torsion-free discrete subgroups of G\times G acting properly discontinuously on G by left and right multiplication. To this end, we prove a general result on the Cartan projection of discrete groups acting properly discontinuously on corank-one reductive homogeneous spaces over k.

Let L be a reductive subgroup of a reductive Lie group G. Let G/H be a homogeneous space of reductive type. We provide a necessary condition for the properness of the action of L on G/H. As an application we give examples of spaces that do not admit standard compact Clifford-Klein forms.
We show that the standard set of elementary generators of an elementary isotropic reductive group over a connected finitely generated ring is a Kazhdan subset. This generalizes the corresponding result of M. Ershov, A. Jaikin-Zapirain, and M. Kassabov for Chevalley and twisted Chevalley groups.
Let G be a real reductive Lie group and H a closed reductive subgroup of G. We investigate the deformation of "standard" compact quotients of G/H, i.e., of quotients of G/H by discrete subgroups Gamma of G that are uniform lattices in a closed reductive subgroup L of G acting properly and cocompactly on G/H. For L of real rank 1, we prove that after a small deformation in G, such a group Gamma remains discrete in G and its action on G/H remains properly discontinuous and cocompact. More generally, we prove that the properness of the action of any convex cocompact subgroup of L on G/H is preser…
A semisimple element $s$ of a connected reductive group $G$ is said {\it quasi-isolated} (respectively {\it isolated}) if $C_G(s)$ (respectively $C_G^0(s)$) is not contained in a Levi subgroup of a proper parabolic subgroup of $G$. We study properties of quasi-isolated semisimple elements and give a classification in terms of the affine Dynkin diagram of $G$. Tables are provided for adjoint simple groups.
In the paper we study twisted conjugacy classes and isogredience classes for automorphisms of reductive linear algebraic groups. We show that reductive linear algebraic groups over some fields of zero characteristic possess the $R_\infty$ and $S_\infty$ properties.
Let $k$ be a perfect field such that for every $n$ there are only finitely many field extensions, up to isomorphism, of $k$ of degree $n$. If $G$ is a reductive algebraic group defined over $k$, whose characteristic is very good for $G$, then we prove that $G(k)$ has only finitely many $z$-classes. For each perfect field $k$ which does not have the above finiteness property we show that there exist groups $G$ over $k$ such that $G(k)$ has infinitely many $z$-classes.
We show that the finiteness length of an $S$-arithmetic subgroup $Γ$ in a noncommutative isotropic absolutely almost simple group $G$ over a global function field is one less than the sum of the local ranks of $G$ taken over the places in $S$. This determines the finiteness properties for arithmetic subgroups in isotropic reductive groups, confirming the conjectured finiteness properties for this class of groups. Our main tool is Behr-Harder reduction theory which we recast in terms of the metric structure of euclidean buildings.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. The aim of this paper is to present a method to find triples $(G,M,H)$ with the following three properties. Property 1: $G$ is simple and $k$ has characteristic 2. Property 2: $H$ and $M$ are closed reductive subgroups of $G$ such that $H<M<G$, and $(G,M)$ is a reductive pair. Property 3: $H$ is $G$-completely reducible, but not $M$-completely reducible. We exhibit our method by presenting a new example of such a triple in $G=E_7$. Then we consider a rationality problem and a problem concerning con…
Kobayashi [Duke Math. J. (1992)] gave a necessary condition for the existence of compact Clifford-Klein forms in terms of Cartan projections and non-compact dimensions of reductive subgroups. We extend his method to non-reductive subgroups, and give some examples of homogeneous spaces of reductive type that do not admit compact Clifford-Klein forms by comparing Cartan projections and non-compact dimensions of reductive subgroups with those of non-reductive subgroups.
We define the holomorphic Fourier transform of holomorphic functions on complex reductive groups, prove some properties like the Fourier inversion formula, and give some applications. The definition of the holomorphic Fourier transform makes use of the notion of $K$-admissible measures. We prove that $K$-admissible measures are abundant, and the definition of holomorphic Fourier transform is independent of the choice of $K$-admissible measures.
Let $k$ be a nonperfect field of characteristic $2$. Let $G$ be a $k$-split simple algebraic group of type $E_6$ (or $G_2$) defined over $k$. In this paper, we present the first examples of nonabelian non-$G$-completely reducible $k$-subgroups of $G$ which are $G$-completely reducible over $k$. Our construction is based on that of subgroups of $G$ acting non-separably on the unipotent radical of a proper parabolic subgroup of $G$ in our previous work. We also present examples with the same property for a non-connected reductive group $G$. Along the way, several general results concerning compl…
We establish several characterizations of Anosov representations of word hyperbolic groups into real reductive Lie groups, in terms of a Cartan projection or Lyapunov projection of the Lie group. Using a properness criterion of Benoist and Kobayashi, we derive applications to proper actions on homogeneous spaces of reductive groups.
We extend the notion of induced conjugacy classes in reductive groups, introduced by Lusztig and Spaltenstein for unipotent classes, to arbitrary classes. We study properties of equivariant fibrations of prehomogeneous affine spaces, especially the existence of relative invariants. We also detect prehomogeneous affine spaces as subquotients of canonical parabolic subgroups attached to elements of reductive groups in the sense of Jacobson-Morozov. These results are prerequisites for making the geometric expansion of the Arthur-Selberg trace formula more explicit.
We prove new results in generalized Harish-Chandra theory providing a description of the so-called Brauer--Lusztig blocks in terms of the information encoded in the $\ell$-adic cohomology of Deligne--Lusztig varieties. Then, we propose new conjectures for finite reductive groups by considering geometric analogues of the $\ell$-local structures that lie at the heart of the local-global counting conjectures. For large primes, our conjectures coincide with the counting conjectures thanks to a connection established by Broué, Fong and Srinivasan between $\ell$-structures and their geometric counte…
We investigate positive-dimensional closed reductive subgroups of almost simple algebraic groups containing a regular unipotent element. Our main result states that such subgroups do not lie inside proper parabolic subgroups unless possibly when their connected component is a torus. This extends the earlier result of Testerman and Zalesski treating connected reductive subgroups.
In 1965, Steinberg's study of conjugacy classes in connected reductive groups led him to construct an affine subspace parametrising regular conjugacy classes, which he noticed is also a cross section for the conjugation action by the unipotent radical of a Borel subgroup on another affine subspace. Recently, generalisations of this slice and its cross section property have been obtained by Sevostyanov in the context of quantum group analogues of W-algebras and by He-Lusztig in the context of Deligne-Lusztig varieties. Such slices are often thought of as group analogues of Slodowy slices. In th…
Let $\mc G$ be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We study homogeneous $\mc G$-spaces that are induced from the $G\times G$-space $G$, $G$ a suitable reductive group, along a parabolic subgroup of $\mc G$. We show that, under certain mild assumptions, any (normal) equivariant embedding of such a homogeneous space is canonically Frobenius split compatible with certain subvarieties and has an equivariant rational resolution by a toroidal embedding. In particular, all these embeddings are Cohen-Macaulay. Examples are the $G\times G$-orbits in normal redu…
We determine when an arithmetic subgroup of a reductive group defined over a global function field is of type FP_\infty by comparing its large-scale geometry to the large-scale geometry of lattices in real semisimple Lie groups.
Using a characterization of parabolics in reductive Lie groups due to Furstenberg, elementary properties of buildings, and some algebraic topology, we give a new proof of Tits' classification of 2-transitive Lie groups.
We give a complete classification of the reductive symmetric pairs (G,H) for which the homogeneous space $(G \times H)/diag(H)$ is real spherical in the sense that a minimal parabolic subgroup has an open orbit. Combining with a criterion established in [T. Kobayashi--T. Oshima, Adv. Math. 2013], we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a reductive symmetric pair $(G,H)$ such that the multiplicities for the branching law of the restriction any admissible smooth representation of $G$ to $H$ have finiteness/boundedness property.
A masure (a.k.a affine ordered hovel) I is a generalization of the Bruhat-Tits building that is associated to a split Kac-Moody group G over a non-archimedean local field. This is a union of affine spaces called apartments. When G is a reductive group, I is a building and there is a G-invariant distance inducing a norm on each apartment. In this paper, we study distances on I inducing the affine topology on each apartment. We show that some properties (completeness, local compactness, ...) cannot be satisfyed when G is not reductive. Nevertheless, we construct distances such that each element …
