We derive the Fundamental Plane (FP) relation for a sample of 1430 early-type galaxies in the optical (r band) and the near-infrared (K band), by combining SDSS and UKIDSS data. With such a large, homogeneous dataset, we are able to assess the dependence of the FP on the waveband. Our analysis indicates that the FP of luminous early-type galaxies is essentially waveband independent, with its coefficients increasing at most by 8% from the optical to the NIR. This finding fits well into a consistent picture where the tilt of the FP is not driven by stellar populations, but results from other effects, such as non-homology. In this framework, the optical and NIR FPs require more massive galaxies to be slightly more metal rich than less massive ones, and to have highly synchronized ages, with an age variation per decade in mass smaller than a few percent.
The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) is the first of a new generation of hemispheric imaging projects to extend the work of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) by reaching three magnitudes deeper in YJHK imaging, to K=18.2 (5-sigma, Vega) over wide fields. Better complementing existing optical surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the resulting public imaging catalogues provide new photometry of rare object samples too faint to be reached previously. The first data release of UKIDSS has already surpassed 2MASS in terms of photons gathered, and using this new dataset we …
We report the discovery of a new gravitational lens system. This object, ULAS J234311.93-005034.0, is the first to be selected by using the new UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS), together with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The ULAS J234311.93-005034.0 system contains a quasar at redshift 0.788 which is doubly imaged, with separation 1.4". The two quasar images have the same redshift and similar, though not identical, spectra. The lensing galaxy is detected by subtracting point-spread functions from R-band images taken with the Keck telescope. The lensing galaxy can also be detecte…
We present the initial results from our search for high redshift, z > 6, quasars using near infrared data from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS). Our analysis of 106 deg^2 of sky from Data Release 1 (DR1) has resulted in the discovery of ULAS J020332.38+001229.2, a luminous (J_AB=20.0, J_Vega=19.1, M_1450=-26.2) quasar at z=5.86. Following candidate selection from the combined IR and optical catalogue data and stacking of multiple epoch Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data, we have obtained optical spectroscopy for the only two z > 6 quasar candidates. The VLT…
We report on the first ultracool dwarf discoveries from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey Early Data Release (LAS EDR), in particular the discovery of T dwarfs which are fainter and more distant than those found using the 2MASS and SDSS surveys. We aim to show that our methodologies for searching the ~27 sq degs of the LAS EDR are successful for finding both L and T dwarfs $via$ cross-correlation with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR4 release. While the area searched so far is small, the numbers of objects found shows great promise for near-future releases of …
We conducted an exploratory search for quasars at z~ 6 - 8, using the Early Data Release from United Kingdom Infrared Deep Sky survey (UKIDSS) cross-matched to panoramic optical imagery. High redshift quasar candidates are chosen using multi-color selection in i,z,Y,J,H and K bands. After removal of apparent instrumental artifacts, our candidate list consisted of 34 objects. We further refined this list with deeper imaging in the optical for ten of our candidates. Twenty-five candidates were followed up spectroscopically in the near-infrared and in the optical. We confirmed twenty-five of our …
We construct a sample of extremely red objects (EROs) within the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey by combining the Early Data Release with optical data from the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field. We find a total of 3715 objects over 2013 sq. arcmin with R-K>5.3 and K<=20.3, which is a higher surface density than found by previous studies. This is partly due to our ability to use a small aperture in which to measure colours, but is also the result of a genuine overdensity of objects compared to other fields. We separate our sample into passively-evolving and dusty star-forming galaxies using their RJK colou…
We present the results of a 9.3 square degree infrared (ZYJHK) survey in the Upper Scorpius association extracted from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Cluster Survey Early Data Release. We have selected a total of 112 candidates from the ($Z-J$,$Z$) colour-magnitude diagram over the Z=12.5-20.5 magnitude range, corresponding to M = 0.25-0.01 Msun at an age of 5 Myr and a distance of 145 pc. Additional photometry in J and K filters revealed most of them as reddened stars, leaving 32 possible members. Among them, 15 have proper motion consistent with higher mass members from…
We describe the number counts and spatial distribution of 239 Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs), selected from the Early Data Release of the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey. The DRGs are identified by their very red infrared colours with (J-K)AB>1.3, selected over 0.62 sq degree to a 90% completeness limit of KAB~20.7. This is the first time a large sample of bright DRGs has been studied within a contiguous area, and we provide the first measurements of their number counts and clustering. The population shows strong angular clustering, intermediate between those of K-selected field galaxies and optical/inf…
We present the optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of four faint T dwarfs newly discovered from the UKIDSS first data release. The sample, drawn from an imaged area of ~136 square degrees to a depth of Y=19.9 (5-sigma, Vega), is located in the SDSS Southern Equatorial Stripe, a region of significant future deep imaging potential. We detail the selection and followup of these objects, three of which are spectroscopically confirmed brown dwarfs ranging from type T2.5 to T7.5, and one is photometrically identified as early T. Their magnitudes range from Y=19.01 to 19.88 with der…
The largest K-band flux-limited sample of luminous quasars to date has been constructed from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey Early Data Release, covering an effective area of 12.8 deg^2. Exploiting the K-band excess of all quasars with respect to foreground stars, including quasars experiencing dust reddening and objects with non-standard SEDs, a list of targets suitable for spectroscopic follow-up observations with the AAOmega multi-object spectrograph is constructed, resulting in more than 200 confirmed AGN. KX-selection successfully identifies as quasar candidates objects that are excluded fro…
Optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectra are presented for ULAS J131911.29+095951.4 (hereafter ULAS J1319+0950), a new redshift z = 6.127 +/- 0.004 quasar discovered in the Third Data Release (DR3) of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). The source has Y_Vega = 19.10 +/- 0.03, corresponding to M_1450,AB = -27.12, which is comparable to the absolute magnitudes of the z ~= 6 quasars discovered in the SDSS. ULAS J1319+0950 was, in fact, registered by SDSS as a faint source with z_AB = 20.1 +/- 0.1, just below the signal--to--noise ratio limit of the SDSS high-redshift quasar survey. The fa…
We present the first cluster catalogue extracted from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Early Data Release. The catalogue is created using UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey infrared J and K data combined with 3.6 micro-m and 4.5 micro-m Spitzer bands and optical BVRi'z' imaging from the Subaru Telescope over 0.5 square degrees in the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field. We have created a new cluster-detection algorithm, based on the Friends-Of-Friends and Voronoi Tessellation methods, which utilises probability distribution functions derived from a photometric redshift analysis. We employ mock catalogues to …
We investigate colour selection techniques for high redshift galaxies in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey Early Data Release (UDS EDR). Combined with very deep Subaru optical photometry, the depth (K_AB = 22.5) and area (0.62 deg^2) of the UDS EDR allows us to investigate optical/near-IR selection using a large sample of over 30,000 objects. By using the B-z, z-K colour-colour diagram (the BzK technique) we identify over 7500 candidate galaxies at z > 1.4, which can be further separated into passive and starforming systems (pBzK and sBzK respectively). Our unique sample allows us to identify a new…
We present new results on the cosmological evolution of the near-infrared galaxy luminosity function, derived from the analysis of a new sample of \~22,000 K(AB) < 22.5 galaxies selected over an area of 0.6 square degrees from the Early Data Release of the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). Our study has exploited the multi-wavelength coverage of the UDS field provided by the new UKIDSS WFCAM K and J-band imaging, the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey and the Spitzer-SWIRE Survey. The unique combination of large area and depth provided by this new survey minimises the complicating effect of cosmic va…
We have exploited the large area coverage of the combined UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) and Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) to search for bright Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z >= 5. Using the available optical+near-infrared photometry to efficiently exclude low-redshift contaminants, we identify nine z >= 5 LBG candidates brighter than z'=25(AB) within the 0.6 square degree overlap region between the UDS early data release (EDR) and the optical coverage of the SXDS. Accounting for selection incompleteness, we estimate the corresponding surface density of z >= 5 LBGs with z'<=25(AB) to …
We present luminosity and surface brightness distributions of 40,111 galaxies with K-band photometry from the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS), Data Release 3 and optical photometry from Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Various features and limitations of the new UKIDSS data are examined, such as a problem affecting Petrosian magnitudes of extended sources. Selection limits in K- and r-band magnitude, K-band surface brightness and K-band radius are included explicitly in the 1/Vmax estimate of the space de…
This paper defines the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Early Data Release (EDR). UKIDSS is a set of five large near-infra-red surveys defined by Lawrence et al. (2006), being undertaken with the UK Infra-red Telescope (UKIRT) Wide Field Camera (WFCAM). The programme began in May 2005 and has an expected duration of seven years. Each survey uses some or all of the broadband filter complement ZYJHK. The EDR is the first public release of data to the European Southern Observatory (ESO) community. All worldwide releases occur after a delay of 18 months from the ESO release. The EDR provide…
Noisy distance estimates associated with photometric rather than spectroscopic redshifts lead to a mis-estimate of the luminosities, and produce a correlated mis-estimate of the sizes. We consider a sample of early-type galaxies from the SDSS DR6 and apply the generalization of the V_max method to correct for these biases. We show that our technique recovers the true redshift, magnitude and size distributions, as well as the true size-luminosity relation. Regardless the specific application outlined here, our method impacts a broader range of studies, when at least one distance-dependent quant…
We compare the large scale galaxy clustering between the North and South SDSS early data release (EDR) and also with the clustering in the APM Galaxy Survey. The three samples are independent and cover an area of 150, 230 and 4300 square degrees respectively. We combine SDSS data in different ways to approach the APM selection. Given the good photometric calibration of the SDSS data and the very good match of its North and South number counts, we combine them in a single sample. The joint clustering is compared with equivalent subsamples in the APM. The final sampling errors are small enough t…
We present a study of the connection between star-forming galaxies, AGN host galaxies, and normal early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using the SDSS DR5 and DR4plus data, we select our early-type galaxy sample in the color versus color-gradient space, and we classify the spectral types of the selected early-type galaxies into normal, star-forming, Seyfert, and LINER classes, using several spectral line flux ratios. We investigate the slope in the fundamental space for each class of early-type galaxies and find that there are obvious differences in the slopes of the fund…
We present the first analysis of three-dimensional genus statistics for the SDSS EDR galaxy sample. Due to the complicated survey volume and the selection function, analytic predictions of the genus statistics for this sample are not feasible, therefore we construct extensive mock catalogs from N-body simulations in order to compare the observed data with model predictions. This comparison allows us to evaluate the effects of a variety of observational systematics on the estimated genus for the SDSS sample, including the shape of the survey volume, the redshift distortion effect, and the radia…
We improve strong lensing constraints on cosmological parameters in light of the new measurement of the velocity dispersion function of early-type galaxies based on the SDSS DR5 data and recent semi-analytical modeling of galaxy formation. Using both the number statistics of the CLASS statistical sample and the image separation distribution of the CLASS and the PANELS radio-selected lenses, we find the cosmological matter density $\Om = 0.25^{+0.12}_{-0.08}$ (68% CL) assuming evolutions of galaxies predicted by a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation and $\Om = 0.26^{+0.12}_{-0.08}$ assumi…
We study the dependence of the isophotal shape of early-type galaxies on their absolute B-band magnitude, their dynamical mass, and their nuclear activity and environment, using an unprecedented large sample of 847 early-type galaxies identified in the SDSS by Hao et al (2006). We find that the fraction of disky galaxies smoothly decreases with increasing luminosity. The large sample allows us to describe these trends accurately with tight linear relations that are statistically robust against the uncertainty in the isophotal shape measurements. There is also a host of significant correlations…
We present the discovery of fifteen new T2.5-T7.5 dwarfs (with estimated distances between ~24-93pc, identified in the first three main data releases of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey. This brings the total number of T dwarfs discovered in the Large Area Survey (to date) to 28. These discoveries are confirmed by near infrared spectroscopy, from which we derive spectral types on the unified scheme of Burgasser et al. (2006). Seven of the new T dwarfs have spectral types of T2.5-T4.5, five have spectral types of T5-T5.5, one is a T6.5p, and two are T7-7.5. We assess spectral morphology and c…
We present ultraviolet photometry for a sample of morphologically early-type galaxies selected by matching the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 1 with the GALEX Medium and All-sky Imaging Surveys. We obtain a working sample of 1032 early-type galaxies with GALEX FUV detections, SDSS spectroscopy, and $z<0.2$. Using the SDSS spectra to identify galaxies with even weak star formation or evidence of AGN, and further removing galaxies with any evidence of non early-type morphology, we derive a final sample of 172 red quiescent early-type galaxies. We find that the $FUV-r$ color has a full ran…
A sample of nearly 9000 early-type galaxies, in the redshift range 0.01 < z < 0.3, was selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey using morphological and spectral criteria. This paper describes how the sample was selected, presents examples of images and seeing corrected fits to the observed surface brightness profiles, describes our method for estimating K-corrections, and shows that the SDSS spectra are of sufficiently high quality to measure velocity dispersions accurately. It also provides catalogs of the measured photometric and spectroscopic parameters. In related papers, these data are …
The Early Data Release from the Sloan Digital Sky survey provides one of the largest multicolor photometric catalogs currently available to the astronomical community. In this paper we present the first application of photometric redshifts to the $\sim 6$ million extended sources within these data (with 1.8 million sources having $r' < 21$). Utilizing a range of photometric redshift techniques, from empirical to template and hybrid techniques, we investigate the statistical and systematic uncertainties present within the redshift estimates for the EDR data. For $r'<21$ we find that the redshif…
We present initial results for counts in cells statistics of the angular distribution of galaxies in early data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We analyze a rectangular stripe $2.5^\circ$ wide, covering approximately 160 sq. degrees, containing over $10^6$ galaxies in the apparent magnitude range $18 < r^\prime < 22$, with areas of bad seeing, contamination from bright stars, ghosts, and high galactic extinction masked out. This survey region, which forms part of the SDSS Early Data Release, is the same as that for which two-point angular clustering statistics have recently been comp…
In this paper, we limit the stellar content of 13 high-velocity clouds (HVCs; including 1 compact HVC) using the detection limits of a new survey for resolved Milky Way satellite galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (EDR). Our analysis is sensitive to stellar associations within the virial radius of the Milky Way that are up to 50 times fainter than the faintest known Milky Way satellites. Statistically, we find no stellar overdensity associated with any of the clouds. These non-detections suggest lower limits of M_{HI}/L_V that range between ~ 0.2 and 250, assuming clou…
We compute the angular power spectrum C_l from 1.5 million galaxies in early SDSS data on large angular scales, l<600. The data set covers about 160 square degrees, with a characteristic depth of order 1 Gpc/h in the faintest (21<r<22) of our four magnitude bins. Cosmological interpretations of these results are presented in a companion paper by Dodelson et al (2001). The data in all four magnitude bins are consistent with a simple flat ``concordance'' model with nonlinear evolution and linear bias factors of order unity. Nonlinear evolution is particularly evident for the brightest galaxies. …
We have identified 7 new magnetic DA white dwarfs in the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our selection strategy has also recovered all the previously known magnetic white dwarfs contained in the SDSS EDR, KUV03292+0035 and HE0330-0002. Analysing the SDSS fibre spectroscopy of the magnetic DA white dwarfs with our state-of-the-art model spectra, we find dipole field strengths 1.5<=B_d<=63MG and effective temperatures 8500<=Teff<=39000K. As a conservative estimate, we expect that the complete SDSS will increase the number of known magnetic white dwarfs by a factor 3.
We use the spectra of ~ 22,000 early-type galaxies, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, to infer the ages, metallicities and star formation histories of these galaxies. We find clear evidence of "downsizing", i.e. galaxies with larger velocity dispersion have older stellar populations. In particular, most early-type galaxies with velocity dispersion exceeding 200 km s-1 formed more than 90% of their current stellar mass at redshift z > 2.5. Therefore, star formation was suppressed around this redshift. We also show that chemical enrichment was rapid, lasting 1-2 Gyr and find evidence t…
The angular distribution of galaxies encodes a wealth of information about large scale structure. Ultimately, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) will record the angular positions of order 10^8 galaxies in five bands, adding significantly to the cosmological constraints. This is the first in a series of papers analyzing a rectangular stripe 2.5x90 degrees from early SDSS data. We present the angular correlation function for galaxies in four separate magnitude bins on angular scales ranging from 0.003 degrees to 15 degrees. Much of the focus of this paper is on potential systematic effects. We …
We investigate the X-ray properties of the color-selected radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Early Data Release using ROSAT, Chandra, and XMM-Newton data. In the 0.16-6.28 redshift range, 136 RQQs have X-ray detections (69 from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, RASS), while for 70 RQQs X-ray upper limits are obtained. The well-defined selection method utilized by the SDSS, coupled with the tight radio constraints from the FIRST/NVSS surveys, allow us to define a representative sample of optically selected RQQs whose broad-band spectral energy distributions (characterized…
We exploit recent constraints on the ages and metallicities of early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to gain new insight into the physical origin of two fundamental relations obeyed by these galaxies: the colour-magnitude and the Mg2-sigmaV relations. Our sample consists of 26,003 galaxies selected from the SDSS DR2 on the basis of their concentrated light profiles, for which we have previously derived median-likelihood estimates of stellar metallicity, light-weighted age and stellar mass. Our analysis provides the most unambiguous demonstration to date of the fact that bo…
(Abridged) We apply Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to a sample of early-type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in order to infer differences in their star formation histories. Out of the first few principal components (PC), we study four which give information about stellar populations and velocity dispersion. We construct two parameters (eta and zeta) as linear combinations of PC1 and PC2. We find zeta to be most sensitive to recent episodes of star formation, and eta to be strongly dependent on the average age of the stellar populations. The distribution of the eta compon…
A magnitude limited sample of nearly 9000 early-type galaxies, in the redshift range 0.01 < z < 0.3, was selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey using morphological and spectral criteria. The Fundamental Plane relation in this sample is R_o ~ sigma^{1.49\pm 0.05} I_o^{-0.75\pm 0.01} in the r* band. It is approximately the same in the g*, i* and z* bands. Relative to the population at the median redshift in the sample, galaxies at lower and higher redshifts have evolved only little. If the Fundamental Plane is used to quantify this evolution then the apparent magnitude limit can masquerade a…
Early photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) contain angular positions for 1.5 million galaxies. In companion papers, the angular correlation function $w(θ)$ and 2D power spectrum $C_l$ of these galaxies are presented. Here we invert Limber's equation to extract the 3D power spectrum from the angular results. We accomplish this using an estimate of $dn/dz$, the redshift distribution of galaxies in four different magnitude slices in the SDSS photometric catalog. The resulting 3D power spectrum estimates from $w(θ)$ and $C_l$ agree with each other and with previous estimates o…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey is one of the first multicolor photometric and spectroscopic surveys designed to measure the statistical properties of galaxies within the local Universe. In this Letter we present some of the initial results on the angular 2-point correlation function measured from the early SDSS galaxy data. The form of the correlation function, over the magnitude interval 18<r*<22, is shown to be consistent with results from existing wide-field, photographic-based surveys and narrower CCD galaxy surveys. On scales between 1 arcminute and 1 degree the correlation function is well…
We present the first results of a combined VLT VIMOS integral-field unit and Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/ACS study of the early-type lens galaxy SDSS J2321-097 at z=0.0819, extending kinematic studies to a look-back time of 1 Gyr. This system, discovered in the Sloan Lens ACS Survey (SLACS), has been observed as part of a VLT Large Programme with the goal of obtaining two-dimensional stellar kinematics of 17 early-type galaxies to z~0.35 and Keck spectroscopy of an additional dozen lens systems. Bayesian modelling of both the surface brightness distribution of the lensed source and the two-di…
We find clusters and superclusters of galaxies using the Data Release 1 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We determine the luminosity function of clusters and find that clusters in a high-density environment have a luminosity a factor of ~5 higher than in a low-density environment. We also study clusters and superclusters in numerical simulations. Simulated clusters in a high-density environment are also more massive than those in a low-density environment. Comparison of the density distribution at various epochs in simulations shows that in large low-density regions (voids) dynamical evolution…
We present a comprehensive study of the nature of the SDSS galaxies divided into various classes based on their morphology, colour, and spectral features. The SDSS galaxies are classified into early-type and late-type; red and blue; passive, HII, Seyfert, and LINER, returning a total of 16 fine classes of galaxies. We examine the luminosity dependence of seven physical parameters of galaxies in each class. We find that more than half of red early-type galaxies (REGs) have star formation or AGN activity, and that these active REGs have smaller axis ratio and bluer outside compared to the passiv…
Based on the catalog of merging galaxies in the Early Data Release (EDR) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the differences of star formation history between merging galaxies and field galaxies are studied statistically by means of three spectroscopic indicators the 4000-Å break strength, the Balmer absorption-line index, and the specific star formation rate. It is found that for early-type merging galaxies the interactions will not induce significant enhancement of the star-formation activity because of its stability and lack of cool gas. On the other hand, late-type merging galaxies alw…
We analyze the Luminosity Functions (LFs) of a subsample of 69 clusters from the RASS-SDSS galaxy cluster catalog. When calculated within the cluster physical sizes, given by r200 or r500, all the cluster LFs appear to have the same shape, well fitted by a composite of two Schechter functions with a marked upturn and a steepening at the faint-end. Previously reported cluster-to-cluster variations of the LF faint-end slope are due to the use of a metric cluster aperture for computing the LF of clusters of different masses. We determine the composite LF for early- and late-type galaxies, where t…
We present estimates of the N-point galaxy area-averaged angular correlation functions wN for N = 2,...,7 from the third data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The sample was selected from galaxies with 18 < r < 21, and is the largest ever used to study higher-order correlations. The measured wN are used to calculate the projected, sN, and real space, SN, hierarchical amplitudes. This produces highly-precise measurements over 0.2 to 10 h-1 Mpc, which are consistent with Gaussian primordial density fluctuations. The measurements suggest that higher-order galaxy bias is non-negligi…
The colors and chemical abundances of early-type galaxies at redshifts z<0.3 are studied using a sample of nearly 9000 galaxies, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey using morphological and spectral criteria. In this sample, redder galaxies have larger velocity dispersions. Color also correlates with magnitude and size, but these correlations are entirely due to the L-sigma and R_o-sigma relations: the primary correlation is color-sigma. The red light in early-type galaxies is, on average, slightly more centrally concentrated than the blue. Because of these color gradients, the strength …
Dusty hyperluminous galaxies in the early universe provide unique environments for studying the role of massive stars in the formation and destruction of dust. At redshifts above ~ 6, when the universe was less than ~ 1 Gyr old, dust could have only condensed in the explosive ejecta of Type II supernovae (SNe), since most of the progenitors of the AGB stars, the major alternative source of interstellar dust, did not have time to evolve off the main sequence since the onset of star formation. In this paper we present analytical models for the evolution of the gas, dust, and metals in high redsh…
We have constructed a Main galaxy subsample with redshifts in the range 0.08<=z<=0.12 from SDSS Data Release 3 (SDSS DR3), and refer to this subsample as "MGSU"(It contains 67777 galaxies). By cluster analysis, two isolated Main galaxy samples are extracted from this subsample. It turns out that two isolated Main galaxy samples identified at different radii have the same properties. Additionally, we also find that early-type galaxies in isolated Main galaxy samples are fewer than that in close double galaxy sample.
The cluster correlation function and its richness dependence are determined from 1108 clusters of galaxies -- the largest sample of clusters studied so far -- found in 379 deg^2 of Sloan Digital Sky Survey early data. The results are compared with previous samples of optically and X-ray selected clusters. The richness-dependent correlation function increases monotonically from an average correlation scale of ~ 12 h^{-1} Mpc for poor clusters to ~ 25 h^{-1} Mpc for the richer, more massive clusters with a mean separation of ~ 90 h^{-1} Mpc. X-ray selected clusters suggest slightly stronger corr…
We present a catalog of 799 clusters of galaxies in the redshift range z_est = 0.05 - 0.3 selected from ~400 deg^2 of early SDSS commissioning data along the celestial equator. The catalog is based on merging two independent selection methods -- a color-magnitude red-sequence maxBCG technique (B), and a Hybrid Matched-Filter method (H). The BH catalog includes clusters with richness Λ>= 40 (Matched-Filter) and N_gal >= 13 (maxBCG), corresponding to typical velocity dispersion of σ_v >~ 400 km s^{-1} and mass (within 0.6 h^{-1) Mpc radius) >~ 5*10^{13} h^{-1} M_sun. This threshold is below Abel…
The mass function of clusters of galaxies is determined from 400 deg^2 of early commissioning imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey; ~300 clusters in the redshift range z = 0.1 - 0.2 are used. Clusters are selected using two independent selection methods: a Matched Filter and a red-sequence color magnitude technique. The two methods yield consistent results. The cluster mass function is compared with large-scale cosmological simulations. We find a best-fit cluster normalization relation of sigma_8*omega_m^0.6 = 0.33 +- 0.03 (for 0.1 ~< omega_m ~< 0.4), or equivalently sigma_8 = (0.16/om…
We present the discovery of SDSS J042348.57-041403.5 as a closely-separated (0"16) brown dwarf binary, resolved by the Hubble Space Telescope Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer. Physical association is deduced from the angular proximity of the components and constraints on their common proper motion. SDSS0423-0414AB appears to be composed of two brown dwarfs with spectral types L6+/-1 and T2+/-1. Hence, this system straddles the transition between L dwarfs and T dwarfs, a unique evolutionary phase of brown dwarfs characterized by substantial shifts in spectral morphology over a…
Using a large galaxy group catalogue constructed from the SDSS, we investigate the correlation between various galaxy properties and halo mass. We split the population of galaxies in early types, late types, and intermediate types, based on their colour and specific star formation rate. At fixed luminosity, the early type fraction increases with increasing halo mass. Most importantly, this mass dependence is smooth and persists over the entire mass range probed, without any break or feature at any mass scale. We argue that the previous claim of a characteristic feature on galaxy group scales i…
We investigate the photometric properties of 456 bright galaxies using imaging data recorded during the commissioning phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Morphological classification is carried out by correlating results of several human classifiers. Our purpose is to examine the statistical properties of color indices, scale lengths, and concentration indices as functions of morphology for the SDSS photometric system. We find that $u'-g'$, $g'-r'$, and $r'-i'$ colors of SDSS galaxies match well with those expected from the synthetic calculation of spectroscopic energy distribution o…
We present measurements of parameters of the 3-dimensional power spectrum of galaxy clustering from 222 square degrees of early imaging data in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The projected galaxy distribution on the sky is expanded over a set of Karhunen-Loeve eigenfunctions, which optimize the signal-to-noise ratio in our analysis. A maximum likelihood analysis is used to estimate parameters that set the shape and amplitude of the 3-dimensional power spectrum. Our best estimates are Gamma=0.188 +/- 0.04 and sigma_8L = 0.915 +/- 0.06 (statistical errors only), for a flat Universe with a cosmolo…
Early-type galaxy velocity dispersions and luminosities are correlated. The correlation estimated in local samples (< 100 Mpc) differs from that measured more recently in the SDSS. This is true even when systematics in the SDSS photometric and spectroscopic parameters have been accounted-for. We show that this is also true for the ENEAR sample if galaxy luminosities are estimated using distances which have been corrected for peculiar motions. We then show that, because the estimate of the `true' distance is derived from a correlation with velocity dispersion, in this case the D_n-sigma relatio…
We present the first edition of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar Catalog. The catalog consists of the 3814 objects (3000 discovered by the SDSS) in the initial SDSS public data release that have at least one emission line with a full width at half maximum larger than 1000 km/s, luminosities brighter than M_i^* = -23, and highly reliable redshifts. The area covered by the catalog is 494 square degrees; the majority of the objects were found in SDSS commissioning data using a multicolor selection technique. The quasar redshifts range from 0.15 to 5.03. For each object the catalog prese…
We discuss optical and infrared photometric properties of stars matched in the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) commissioning data for 50 deg2 of sky. About 98% (63,000) of objects listed in the 2MASS Point Source Catalog in the analyzed area are matched within 2 arcsec to an SDSS source. The matched sources represent 8% of the about 800,000 SDSS sources in this area, and 15% of them are resolved in SDSS imaging data, although they are detected as point sources in 2MASS data. For about 14,000 stars with the smallest photometric errors (< 10%) in both su…
A magnitude limited sample of nearly 9000 early-type galaxies, in the redshift range 0.01 < z < 0.3, was selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey using morphological and spectral criteria. The sample was used to study how early-type galaxy observables, including luminosity L, effective radius R_o, surface brightness I_o, color, and velocity dispersion sigma, are correlated with one another. Measurement biases are understood with mock catalogs which reproduce all of the observed scaling relations and their dependences on fitting technique. At any given redshift, the intrinsic distribution of …
We present a theoretical analysis of galaxy-galaxy lensing in the context of halo models with CDM motivated dark matter profiles. The model enables us to separate between the central galactic and noncentral group/cluster contributions. We apply the model to the recent SDSS measurements with known redshifts and luminosities of the lenses. This allows one to accurately model the mass distribution of a local galaxy population around and above $L_{\star}$. We find that virial mass of L* galaxy is M*=(5-10)x10^{11}h^{-1}M_{\sun}, depending on the color of the galaxy. This value varies significantly…
