The prescription of Silva to derive superpotential equations from variational derivatives rather than from Lagrangian densities is applied to theories of gravity derived from Lovelock Lagrangians in the Palatini representation. Spacetimes are without torsion and isolated sources of gravity are minimally coupled. On a closed boundary of spacetime, the metric is given and the connection coefficients are those of Christoffel. We derive equations for the superpotentials in these conditions. The equations are easily integrated and we give the general expression for all superpotentials associated with Lovelock Lagrangians. We find, in particular, that in Einstein's theory, in any number of dimensions, the superpotential, valid at spatial and at null infinity, is that of Katz, Bicak and Lynden-Bell, the KBL superpotential. We also give explicitly the superpotential for Gauss-Bonnet theories of gravity. Finally, we find a simple expression for the superpotential of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theories with an anti-de Sitter background: it is minus the KBL superpotential, confirming, as it should, the calculation of the total mass-energy of spacetime at spatial infinity by Deser and Tekin.
Superpotentials offer a direct means of calculating conserved charges associated with the asymptotic symmetries of space-time. Yet superpotentials have been plagued with inconsistencies, resulting in nonphysical or incongruent values for the mass, angular momentum and energy loss due to radiation. The approach of Regge and Teitelboim, aimed at a clear Hamiltonian formulation with a boundary, and its extension to the Lagrangian formulation by Julia and Silva have resolved these issues, and have resulted in a consistent, well-defined and unique variational equation for the superpotential, thereb…
Our investigation of differential conservation laws in Lagrangian field theory is based on the first variational formula which provides the canonical decomposition of the Lie derivative of a Lagrangian density by a projectable vector field on a bundle (Part 1: gr-qc/9510061). If a Lagrangian density is invariant under a certain class of bundle isomorphisms, its Lie derivative by the associated vector fields vanishes and the corresponding differential conservation laws take place. If these vector fields depend on derivatives of parameters of bundle transformations, the conserved current reduces…
Differential conservation laws in Lagrangian field theory are usually related to symmetries of a Lagrangian density and are obtained if the Lie derivative of a Lagrangian density by a certain class of vector fields on a fiber bundle vanishes. However, only two field models meet this property in fact. In gauge theory of exact internal symmetries, the Lie derivative by vertical vector fields corresponding to gauge transformations is equal to zero. The corresponding Nöether current is reduced to a superpotential that provides invariance of the Nöether conservation law under gauge transformations.…
We first consider the Lagrangian formulation of general relativity for perturbations with respect to a background spacetime. We show that by combining Noether's method with Belinfante's "symmetrization'' procedure we obtain conserved vectors that are independent of any divergence added to the perturbed Hilbert Lagrangian. We also show that the corresponding perturbed energy- momentum tensor is symmetrical and divergenceless but only on backgrounds that are "Einstein spaces" in the sense of A.Z. Petrov. de Sitter or anti-de Sitter and Einstein "spacetimes" are Einstein spaces but in general Fri…
This paper analyses the Noether symmetries and the corresponding conservation laws for Chern-Simons Lagrangians in dimension $d=3$. In particular, we find an expression for the superpotential of Chern-Simons gravity. As a by-product the general discussion of superpotentials for 3rd order natural and quasi-natural theories is also given.
Conserved currents and related superpotentials for perturbations on arbitrary backgrounds in the Lovelock theory are constructed. We use the Lagrangian based field-theoretical method where perturbations are considered as dynamical fields propagating on a given background. Such a formulation is exact (not approximate) and equivalent to the theory in the original metric form. From the very start, using Noether theorem, we derive the Noether-Klein identities and adopt them for the purposes of the current work. Applying these identities in the framework of Lovelock theory, we construct conserved c…
The problem of formulating synchronous variational principles in the context of General Relativity is discussed. Based on the analogy with classical relativistic particle dynamics, the existence of variational principles is pointed out in relativistic classical field theory which are either asynchronous or synchronous. The historical Einstein-Hilbert and Palatini variational formulations are found to belong to the first category. Nevertheless, it is shown that an alternative route exists which permits one to cast these principles in terms of equivalent synchronous Lagrangian variational formul…
In $D$-dimentional gravity on arbitrary curved backgrounds using proven methods conserved currents, divergences of antisymmetrical tensor densities (superpotentials), are constructed. These superpotentials have two remarkable properties: they depend in an essential way on second derivatives in the Lagrangian and are independent on divergences added to it. The conserved currents are thus particulary well adapted to the case of perturbations in Gauss-Bonett cosmological brane theories.
In case of the Einstein's gravitation theory and its first order Palatini reformulation, the stress-energy-momentum of gravity has been proved to reduce to the Komar superpotential. We generalize this result to the affine-metric theory of gravity in case of general connections and arbitrary Lagrangian densities invariant under general covariant transformations. In this case, the stress-energy-momentum of gravity comes to the generalized Komar superpotential depending on a Lagrangian density in a precise way.
In this paper we describe 4-dimensional gravity coupled to scalar and Maxwell fields by the Einstein-Katz action, that is, the covariant version of the "Gamma-Gamma $-$ Gamma-Gamma" part of the Hilbert action supplemented by the divergence of a generalized "Katz vector". We consider static solutions of Einstein's equations, parametrized by some integration constants, which describe an ensemble of asymptotically AdS black holes. Instead of the usual Dirichlet boundary conditions, which aim at singling out a specific solution within the ensemble, we impose that the variation of the action vanish…
We examine the variational and conformal structures of higher order theories of gravity which are derived from a metric-connection Lagrangian that is an arbitrary function of the curvature invariants. We show that the constrained first order formalism when applied to these theories may lead consistently to a new method of reduction of order of the associated field equations. We show that the similarity of the field equations which are derived from appropriate actions via this formalism to those produced by Hilbert varying purely metric Lagrangians is not merely formal but is implied by the dif…
We calculate the relative conserved currents, superpotentials and conserved quantities between two homogeneous and isotropic universes. In particular we prove that their relative "energy" (defined as the conserved quantity associated to cosmic time coordinate translations for a comoving observer) is vanishing and so are the other conserved quantities related to a Lie subalgebra of vector fields isomorphic to the Poincaré algebra. These quantities are also conserved in time. We also find a relative conserved quantity for such a kind of solutions which is conserved in time though non-vanishing. …
We shall use the variational decomposition technique in order to calculate equations of motion and Noether energy-momentum complex for some classes of non-linear gravitational Lagrangians within the first-order (Palatini) formalism. In particular, a complex space-time appears as a solution of our variational problem.
E. Noether's general analysis of conservation laws has to be completed in a Lagrangian theory with local gauge invariance. Bulk charges are replaced by fluxes of superpotentials. Gauge invariant bulk charges may subsist when distinguished one-dimensional subgroups are present. As a first illustration we propose a new {\it Affine action} that reduces to General Relativity upon gauge fixing the dilatation (Weyl 1918 like) part of the connection and elimination of auxiliary fields. It allows a comparison of most gravity superpotentials and we discuss their selection by the choice of boundary cond…
Scalar field cosmological inflation has a first integral relating the Hubble function and the lagrangian of the scalar field(s), which is known under the names of "Hamilton-Jacobi approach" or "superpotential equation". Here we exploit the simplicity of this superpotential equation and use it as an alternative but equivalent cosmological evolution equation during inflation, replacing the Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) equations. It turns out that all inflationary observables can be calculated directly from its solution (the superpotential). Further, the superpotential equation allows for a si…
A construction of conservation laws and conserved quantities for perturbations in arbitrary metric theories of gravity is developed. In an arbitrary field theory, with the use of incorporating an auxiliary metric into the initial Lagrangian covariantized Noether identities are carried out. Identically conserved currents with corresponding superpotentials are united into a family. Such a generalized formalism of the covariantized identities gives a natural basis for constructing conserved quantities for perturbations. A new family of conserved currents and correspondent superpotentials for pert…
We discuss a recently proposed variational principle for deriving the variational equations associated to any Lagrangian system. The principle gives simultaneously the Lagrange and the variational equations of the system. We define a new Lagrangian in an extended configuration space ---which we call D'Alambert's--- comprising both the original coordinates and the compatible ``virtual displacements'' joining two solutions of the original system. The variational principle is Hamilton's with the new Lagrangian. We use this formulation to obtain constants of motion in the Jacobi equations of any L…
We derive the equations of motion of an action-dependent version of the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian, as a specific instance of the Herglotz variational problem. Action-dependent Lagrangians lead to dissipative dynamics, which cannot be obtained with the standard method of Lagrangian field theory. First-order theories of this kind are relatively well understood, but examples of singular or higher-order action-dependent field theories are scarce. This work constitutes an example of such a theory. By casting the problem in clear geometric terms we are able to obtain a Lorentz invariant set of equ…
In Haller and Beron-Vera (2013) we developed a variational principle for the detection of coherent Lagrangian vortex boundaries. The solutions of this variational principle turn out to be closed null-geodesics of the Lorentzian metric associated with a generalized Green-Lagrange strain tensor family. This metric interpretation implies a mathematical analogy between coherent Lagrangian vortex boundaries and photon spheres in general relativity. Here we give an improved discussion on this analogy.
The variational principle for the special and general relativistic hydrodynamics are discussed in view of its application to obtain approximate solutions to these problems. We show that effective Lagrangians can be obtained for suitable ansatz for the dynamical variables such as density profile of the system. As an example, the relativistic version of spherical droplet motion (Rayleigh-Plesset equation) is derived from a simple Lagrangian. For the general relativistic case the most general Lagrangian for spherically symmetric systems is given.
Conformal geodesics are solutions to a system of third order of equations, which makes a Lagrangian formulation problematic. We show how enlarging the class of allowed variations leads to a variational formulation for this system with a third--order conformally invariant Lagrangian. We also discuss the conformally invariant system of fourth order ODEs arising from this Lagrangian, and show that some of its integral curves are spirals.
We study higher--order variational derivatives of a generic second--order Lagrangian ${\cal L}={\cal L}(x,ϕ,\partialϕ,\partial^2ϕ)$ and in this context we discuss the Jacobi equation ensuing from the second variation of the action. We exhibit the different integrations by parts which may be performed to obtain the Jacobi equation and we show that there is a particular integration by parts which is invariant. We introduce two new Lagrangians, ${\cal L}_1$ and ${\cal L}_2$, associated to the first and second--order deformations of the original Lagrangian ${\cal L}_0$ respectively; they are in fa…
Chern--Simons type Lagrangians in $d=3$ dimensions are analyzed from the point of view of their covariance and globality. We use the transgression formula to find out a new fully covariant and global Lagrangian for Chern--Simons gravity: the price for establishing globality is hidden in a bimetric (or biconnection) structure. Such a formulation allows to calculate from a global and simpler viewpoint the energy-momentum complex and the superpotential both for Yang--Mills and gravitational examples.
The investigation of contact symmetries of re--parametrization invariant Lagrangians of finite degrees of freedom and quadratic in the velocities is presented. The main concern of the paper is those symmetry generators which depend linearly in the velocities. A natural extension of the symmetry generator along the lapse function $N(t)$, with the appropriate extension of the dependence in $\dot{N}(t)$ of the gauge function, is assumed; this action yields new results. The central finding is that the integrals of motion are either linear or quadratic in velocities and are generated, respectively …
