We present an approximation for the average density profile of dark matter haloes in the LambdaCDM cosmological model, which is accurate to within 10--15% even for large radial distances from 0.05R_{vir} up to 10R_{vir} for halo masses ranging from 10^{11.5} to 10^{15.0} h^{-1}M_{Sun}. We propose a modified form of the Navarro, Frenk & White (NFW) approximation: ρ(r)=ρ_{NFW}(r)+ A (r/R_{vir})^{-1}+B (1+r/R_{vir})^{-1}. This generalized expression, which is applicable to the external regions of dark matter haloes, only very slightly affects the density in the inner regions of haloes. The strong correlation among the different parameters in the model allows us to describe the profile in terms of just one parameter: the virial mass. We integrate our density profile to derive the enclosed mass in a sphere of a given radius and compare it with the NFW results. We find that the NFW underestimates the enclosed mass by more than 50% at 10R_{vir}, whereas our model reproduces the results from numerical simulations to within 2% accuracy even at this distance. We also use this new approximation to study the weak gravitational lensing and to obtain an analytic expression for the tangential shear. This allows us to quantify the contribution to the shear from the outer regions of the density profile. For the first time we calculate the difference between the tangential shear calculated via the NFW profile and the corresponding result when the external regions of haloes in cosmological simulations are taken into account. We find a 4% difference for all the mass ranges under study.
Virial mass is used as an estimator for the mass of a dark matter halo. However, the commonly used constant overdensity criterion does not reflect the dynamical structure of haloes. Here we analyze dark matter cosmological simulations in order to obtain properties of haloes of different masses focusing on the size of the region with zero mean radial velocity. Dark matter inside this region is stationary, and thus the mass of this region is a much better approximation for the virial mass.
(Abridged) Virial mass is used as an estimator for the mass of a dark matter halo. We call this mass the static mass to distinguish from the commonly used constant overdensity mas…
We have used the hydrodynamical AMR code ENZO to investigate the dynamical evolution of the gas at the centre of dark matter haloes with virial velocities of ~ 20 - 30 kms and virial temperatures of ~ 13000-30000 K at z ~ 15 in a cosmological context. The virial temperature of the dark matter haloes is above the threshold where atomic cooling by hydrogen allows the gas to cool and collapse. We neglect cooling by molecular hydrogen and metals, as may be plausible if H_2 cooling is suppressed by a meta-galactic Lyman-Werner background or an internal source of Lyman-Werner photons, and metal enri…
In a serie of three papers, the dynamical interplay between environments and dark matter haloes is investigated, while focussing on the dynamical flows through their virial sphere. Our method relies on both cosmological simulations, to constrain the environments, and an extension to the classical matrix method to derive the response of the halo (see Pichon & Aubert (2006), paper I). The current paper focuses on the statistical characterisation of the environments surrounding haloes, using a set of large scale simulations. Our description relies on a `fluid' halocentric representation where the…
We investigate the conditions for the existence of an expanding virial shock in the gas falling within a spherical dark-matter halo. The shock relies on pressure support by the shock-heated gas behind it. When the radiative cooling is efficient compared to the infall rate the post-shock gas becomes unstable; it collapses inwards and cannot support the shock. We find for a monoatomic gas that the shock is stable when the post-shock pressure and density obey gamma effective>10/7, with gamma effective begin the time depended equivalent to the adiabatic index. We express the effective gamma in ter…
We improve on our earlier dynamical estimate of the virial masses of the haloes of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at redshift z=3 by accounting for the effects of seeing, slit width, and observational uncertainties. From an analysis of the small number of available rotation curves for LBGs we determine a relation Vc7=(1.9+/-0.2)sigma between circular velocity at a radius of 7kpc, and central line velocity width. We use this relation to transform the measured velocity widths of 32 LBGs to the distribution of circular velocities, for the population of LBGs brighter than R=25.5. We compare this dist…
Large dynamic range numerical simulations of atomic cooling driven collapse of gas in pre-galactic DM haloes with T_vir ~ 10000 K show that the gas loses 90% and more of its angular momentum before rotational support sets in. In a fraction of these haloes where the metallicity is low and UV radiation suppresses H_2 cooling, conditions are thus very favourable for the rapid build-up of massive black holes. Depending on the progression of metal enrichment, the continued suppression of H_2 cooling by external and internal UV radiation and the ability to trap the entropy produced by the release of…
We present the first study on the mass functions of Jenkins et al (J01) and an estimate of their corresponding largest virialized dark halos in the Universe for a variety of dark-energy cosmological models with a running spectral index. Compared with the PL-CDM model, the RSI-CDM model can raise the mass abundance of dark halos for small mass halos at lower redshifts, but it is not apparent on scales of massive mass halos. Particularly, this discrepancy increases largely with the decrease of redshift, and the RSI-CDM model can suppress the mass abundance on any scale of halo masses at higher r…
We investigate the baryon fraction in dark matter haloes formed in non-radiative gas-dynamical simulations of the LambdaCDM cosmogony. By combining a realisation of the Millennium Simulation (Springel et al.) with a simulation of a smaller volume focussing on dwarf haloes, our study spans five decades in halo mass, from 10^10 Msun/h to 10^15 Msun/h. We find that the baryon fraction within the halo virial radius is typically 90% of the cosmic mean, with an rms scatter of 6%, independently of redshift and of halo mass down to the smallest resolved haloes. Our results show that, contrary to the p…
An analytical model is presented for the postcollapse equilibrium structure of virialized objects which condense out of a low-density cosmological background universe, either matter-dominated or flat with a cosmological constant. This generalizes the model we derived previously for an Einstein-de Sitter (EdS) universe. The model is based upon the assumption that cosmological haloes form from the collapse and virialization of top-hat density perturbations and are spherical, isotropic, and isothermal. This leads to the prediction of a unique, nonsingular, truncated isothermal sphere (TIS), a par…
Using cosmological N-body simulations we study the line-of-sight velocity distribution of dark matter haloes focusing on the lowest-order even moments, dispersion and kurtosis, and their application to estimate the mass profiles of cosmological structures. For each of the ten massive haloes selected from the simulation box we determine the virial mass, concentration and the anisotropy parameter. In order to emulate observations from each halo we choose randomly 300 particles and project their velocities and positions along the line of sight and on the surface of the sky, respectively. After re…
We use a set of large cosmological N-body simulations to study the internal structure of dark matter haloes which form in scale-free models. We find that the radius r_178 corresponding to a mean interior overdensity of 178 accurately delineates the quasi-static halo interior from the surrounding infalling material, in agreement with the simple spherical collapse model. The interior velocity dispersion correlates with mass, again in good agreement with the spherical collapse model. Interior to the virial radius r_178, the spherical averaged density, circular velocity and velocity dispersion pro…
The formulation of the tensor virial equations is generalized to unrelaxed configurations, where virial equilibrium does not coincide with dynamical (or hydrostatic) equilibrium. Further investigation is devoted to special classes of homeoidally striated ellipsoids, defined as homeoidally striated, Jacobi ellipsoids. In particular, virial equilibrium configurations with constant anisotropy parameters are studied with more detail, including both flattened and elongated, triaxial configurations, and the determination of the related bifurcation points. The explicit expression of different rotatio…
Using cosmological N-body simulations we study the radial velocity distribution in dark matter haloes focusing on the lowest-order even moments, dispersion and kurtosis. We determine the properties of ten massive haloes in the simulation box approximating their density distribution by the NFW formula characterized by the virial mass and concentration. We also calculate the velocity anisotropy parameter of the haloes and find it mildly radial and increasing with distance from the halo centre. The radial velocity dispersion of the haloes shows a characteristic profile with a maximum, while the r…
We use numerical simulations in a Lambda CDM cosmology to model density profiles in a set of 16 dark matter haloes with resolutions of up to 7 million particles within the virial radius. These simulations allow us to follow robustly the formation and evolution of the central cusp over a large mass range of 10^11 to 10^14 M_sun, down to approximately 0.5% of the virial radius, and from redshift 5 to the present. The cusp of the density profile is set at redshifts of 2 or greater and remains remarkably stable to the present time, when considered in non-comoving coordinates. We fit our haloes to …
Using cosmological $N$-body simulations of dark matter haloes, we study the effects of non-sphericity, substructure and streaming motions in reproducing the structure and internal kinematics of clusters of galaxies from kinematical measurements. Fitting an NFW model to the 3D density profile, we determine the virial mass, concentration parameter and velocity anisotropy of the haloes, and then calculate the profiles of projected velocity moments, as they would be measured by a distant observer. Using these mock data, we apply a Jeans analysis for spherical objects to reproduce the line-of-sight…
In hierarchical models of gravitational clustering, virialized haloes are biased tracers of the matter distribution. As discussed by Mo & White (1996), this bias is nonlinear and stochastic. They developed a model which allows one to write down analytic expressions for the mean of the bias relation, in the initial Lagrangian, and the evolved, Eulerian spaces. We provide analytic expressions for the higher order moments as well. We also show how the Mo-White approach can be extended to compute the evolution, not just of the haloes, but of the dark matter distribution itself. The model predictio…
The excursion set approach allows one to estimate the abundance and spatial distribution of virialized dark matter haloes efficiently and accurately. The predictions of this approach depend on how the nonlinear processes of collapse and virialization are modelled. We present simple analytic approximations which allow us to compare the excursion set predictions associated with spherical and ellipsoidal collapse. In particular, we present formulae for the universal unconditional mass function of bound objects and the conditional mass function which describes the mass function of the progenitors …
A model of the gravitationally evolved dark matter distribution, in the Eulerian space, is developed. It is a simple extension of the excursion set model that is commonly used to estimate the mass function of collapsed dark matter haloes. In addition to describing the evolution of the dark matter itself, the model allows one to describe the evolution of the Eulerian space distribution of the haloes. It can also be used to describe density profiles, on scales larger than the virial radius, of these haloes, and to quantify the way in which matter flows in and out of Eulerian cells. When the init…
We revisit the evaporation process of gas from dwarf galaxies after it has been photo-ionized by the UV flux from the first stars and AGNs and heated to T~10^4K or 2x10^4K respectively. Earlier estimates, based on the balance between pressure and gravity, indicated that dark haloes of virial velocity lower than Vevap ~ 11-13 km/s have lost most of their gas in a dynamical time. We follow the continuous evaporation by a thermal wind during the period when the ionizing flux was effective. We find that the critical virial velocity for significant evaporation is significantly higher. For example, …
We present a method for computing the 6-dimensional coarse-grained phase-space density $f(x,v)$ in an N-body system, and derive its distribution function $v(f)$. The method is based on Delaunay tessellation, where $v(f)$ is obtained with an effective fixed smoothing window over a wide $f$ range. The errors are estimated, and $v(f)$ is found to be insensitive to the sampling resolution or the simulation technique. We find that in gravitationally relaxed haloes built by hierarchical clustering, $v(f)$ is well approximated by a robust power law, $v(f) \propto f^{-2.5 \pm 0.05}$, over more than 4 …
Integral measures of weak gravitational lensing by dark-matter haloes, like the aperture mass, are sensitive to different physical halo properties dependent on the halo mass density profile. For isothermal profiles, the relation between aperture mass and virial mass is steeper than for haloes with the universal NFW profile. Consequently, the halo mass range probed by the aperture mass is much wider for NFW than for isothermal haloes. We use recent modifications to the Press-Schechter mass function in CDM models normalised to the local abundance of rich clusters, to predict the properties of th…
We investigate the effect of dark energy on the density profiles of dark matter haloes with a suite of cosmological N-body simulations and use our results to test analytic models. We consider constant equation of state models, and allow both w>-1 and w<-1. Using five simulations with w ranging from -1.5 to -0.5, and with more than ~1600 well-resolved haloes each, we show that the halo concentration model of Bullock et al. (2001) accurately predicts the median concentrations of haloes over the range of w, halo masses, and redshifts that we are capable of probing. We find that the Bullock et al.…
The study of gas outside the plane of disc galaxies is crucial to understanding the circulation of material within a galaxy and between galaxies and the intergalactic environment. We present new HI observations of the edge-on galaxy NGC891, which show an extended halo component lagging behind the disc in rotation. We compare these results for NGC891 with other detections of gaseous haloes. Finally, we present a dynamical model for the formation of extra-planar gas.
We present the results from a series of collisionless N-body simulations of major mergers of galaxy dark matter haloes with density profiles having either inner cusps or cores. Our simulations range from 2x10^5 to 10^7 particles, allowing us to probe the phase-space distribution of dark matter particles in the innermost regions (less than 0.005 virial radii) of cold dark matter haloes, a subject of much recent debate. We find that a major merger of two cored haloes yields a cored halo and does not result in a cuspy profile seen in many cosmological simulations. This result is unchanged if we c…
We investigate whether a correlation exists between the concentration and spin parameters of dark matter haloes forming in LCDM N-body simulations. In particular, we focus on haloes with virial masses characteristic of the hosts of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) and High Surface Brightness (HSB) galaxies. Our analysis demonstrates that concentration and spin are anti-correlated. If we assume that a galaxy disk forms in one of these haloes from baryons that approximately conserved angular momentum during their dissipation into the rotationally supported disk, then it is possible to estimate the d…
An inside-out model for the formation of haloes in a hierarchical clustering scenario is studied. The method combines the picture of the spherical infall model and a modification of the extended Press-Schechter theory. The mass accretion rate of a halo is defined to be the rate of its mass increase due to minor mergers. The accreted mass is deposited at the outer shells without changing the density profile of the halo inside its current virial radius. We applied the method to a flat $ΛCDM$ Universe. The resulting density profiles are compared to analytical models proposed in the literature, an…
Generalized power-law (GPL) density profiles are compared with simulated dark haloes (SDH) density profiles, and nonlinear least-squares fits are prescribed, involving five parameters which specify the fitting profile (RFSM5 method). More specifically, the validity of a necessary condition for the occurrence of an extremal point, is related to the existence of an intersection between three surfaces in a 3-dimension space. An application is made to a sample of 17 SDHs on the scale of cluster of galaxies, within a flat /\CDM cosmological model. In dealing with the averaged SDH density profile (A…
We determine the cross-correlation function between galaxies and galaxy groups, using both the Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We study the cross-correlation as a function of group mass, and as a function of the luminosity, stellar mass, colour, spectral type and specific star formation rate of the galaxies. All these cross-correlation functions show a clear transition from the `1-halo' to the `2-halo' regimes on a scale comparable to the virial radius of the groups in consideration. On scales larger than the virial radius, all cross-co…
(abridged) We study the mass assembly history (MAH) of dark matter haloes. We compare MAHs obtained using (i) merger trees constructed with the extended Press-Schechter (EPS) formalism, (ii) numerical simulations, and (iii) the Lagrangian perturbation code PINOCCHIO. We show that the PINOCCHIO MAHs are in excellent agreement with those obtained using numerical simulations. Using a suite of 55 PINOCCHIO simulations, with 256^3 particles each, we study the MAHs of 12,924 cold dark matter haloes in a \LambdaCDM concordance cosmology. We show that haloes less massive than the characteristic non-li…
Caustics are high-density structures that form frequently in collisionless media. Under self-gravity, cold dark matter flows focus onto caustics which are yet to be resolved in numerical simulations and or observed in the real world. If detected, caustics would provide a strong evidence for dark matter and would rule out alternative models such as those with modified dynamics. Here, we demonstrate how they might be observed in the weak lensing data. We evaluate the shear distortion and show that its radial profile is marked by a characteristic sawtooth pattern due to the caustics in dark matte…
(Abridged) We study the outer density profiles of dark matter haloes predicted by a generalized secondary infall model and observed in a N-body cosmological simulation of a ΛCDM model. We find substantial systematic variations in shapes and concentrations of the halo profiles as well as a strong correlation of the profiles with the environment. In the N-body simulation, the average outer slope of the density profiles, β(ρ\propto r^{-β}), of isolated haloes is \approx 2.9; 68% of these haloes have values of βbetween 2.5 and 3.8. Haloes in dense environments of clusters are more concentrated and…
Analytical and geometrical properties of generalized power-law (GPL) density profiles are investigated in detail. In particular, a one-to-one correspondence is found between mathematical parameters and geometrical parameters. Then GPL density profiles are compared with simulated dark haloes (SDH) density profiles, and nonlinear least-absolute values and least-squares fits involving the above mentioned five parameters (RFSM5 method) are prescribed. More specifically, the sum of absolute values or squares of absolute logarithmic residuals is evaluated on a large number of points making a 5-dimen…
We use group size haloes identified with a ``friends of friends'' (FOF) algorithm in a concordance $Λ\rm{CDM}$ GADGET2 (dark matter only) simulation to investigate the dependence of halo properties on the environment at $z=0$. The study is carried out using samples of haloes at different distances from their nearest massive {\em cluster} halo. We find that the fraction of haloes with substructure typically increases in high density regions. The halo mean axial ratio $<c/a>$ also increases in overdense regions, a fact which is true for the whole range of halo mass studied. This can be explained…
Thanks to the ever increasing computational power and the development of more sophisticated algorithms, numerical N-body simulations are now uncovering several phenomenological relations between the physical properties of dark matter haloes in position and velocity space. It is the aim of the present work to investigate in detail the dynamical structure of dark matter haloes, as well as its possible dependence on mass and its evolution with redshift up to z=5. We use high-resolution cosmological simulations of individual objects to compute the radially-averaged profiles of several quantities, …
We measure the anisotropy of dark matter flows on small scales in the near environment of haloes using a large set of simulations. We rely on two different approaches to quantify the anisotropy of the cosmic infall: we measure the flows at the haloes' virial radius while describing the infalling matter via fluxes through a spherical shell; we measure the spatial and kinematical distributions of satellites and substructures around haloes detected by the subclump finder ADAPTAHOP first described in the appendix. The two methods are found to be in agreement both qualitatively and quantitatively v…
Most of the mass content of dark matter haloes is expected to be in the form of tidal debris. The density of debris is not constant, but rather can grow due to formation of caustics at the apocenters and pericenters of the orbit, or decay as a result of phase mixing. In the phase space, the debris assemble in a hierarchy which is truncated by the primordial temperature of dark matter. Understanding this phase structure can be of significant importance for the interpretation of many astrophysical observations and in particular dark matter detection experiments. With this purpose in mind, we dev…
Many galaxies display warps, lopsided images, asymmetric rotation curves or other features which suggest that their immediate dynamical environment is neither static nor in equilibrium. In Cold Dark Matter (CDM) theories, such non-equilibrium features are expected in the inner regions of many dark haloes as a result of recent hierarchical growth. We used the excellent statistics provided by the very large Millennium Simulation to study (i) how the distribution of position and velocity asymmetries predicted for halo cores by the concordance LCDM cosmogony depends on halo mass, and (ii) how much…
We show that dark matter haloes, in n--body simulations, have a boundary layer (BL) with precise features. In particular, it encloses all dynamically stable mass while, outside it, dynamical stability is lost soon. Particles can pass through such BL, which however acts as a confinement barrier for dynamical properties. BL is set by evaluating kinetic and potential energies (T(r) and W(r)) and calculating R=-2T/W. Then, on BL, R has a minimum which closely approaches a maximum of w= -dlog W/dlog r. Such $Rw$ ``requirement'' is consistent with virial equilibrium, but implies further regularities…
We investigate the impact finite simulation box size has on the structural and kinematic properties of Cold Dark Matter haloes forming in cosmological simulations. Our approach involves generating a single realisation of the initial power spectrum of density perturbations and studying how truncation of this power spectrum on scales larger than L_cut affects the structure of dark matter haloes at z=0. In particular, we have examined the cases of L_cut = f_cut L_box with f_cut=1 (i.e. no truncation), 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4. In common with previous studies, we find that the suppression of long waveleng…
We explore a possible origin for the puzzling anti-correlation between the formation epoch of galactic dark-matter haloes and their environment density. This correlation has been revealed from cosmological N-body simulations and is in conflict with the Extended Press-Schechter model of halo clustering. Using similar simulations, we first quantify the straightforward association of an early formation epoch with a reduced mass growth rate at late times. We then find that a primary driver of suppressed growth, by accretion and mergers, is tidal effects dominated by a neighbouring massive halo. Th…
If the concordance $Λ$CDM model is a true description of the universe, it should also properly predict the properties and structure of dark matter haloes, where galaxies are born. Using N-body simulations with a broad scale of mass and spatial resolution, we study the structure of dark matter haloes, the distribution of masses and the spatial distribution of subhaloes within the main haloes. We carry out three $Λ$CDM simulations with different resolutions using the AMIGA code. Dark matter haloes are identified using an algorithm that is based on the adaptive grid structure of the simulation co…
We present a detailed analysis of the velocity distribution and orientation of orbits of subhaloes in high resolution cosmological simulations of dark matter haloes. We find a trend for substructure to preferentially revolve in the same direction as the sense of rotation of the host halo: there is an excess of prograde satellite haloes. Throughout our suite of nine host haloes (eight cluster sized objects and one galactic halo) there are on average 59% of the satellites corotating with the host. Even when including satellites out to five virial radii of the host, the signal still remains point…
By means of carefully calibrated semi-analytical reionization models, we estimate the minimum mass of star-forming haloes required to match the current data. Models which do not include haloes of total mass M < 10^9 M_sun fail at reproducing the Gunn-Peterson and electron scattering optical depths simultaneously, as they contribute too few (many) photons at high (low, z \approx 6) redshift. Marginally acceptable solutions require haloes with M \approx 5 \times 10^7 M_sun at z \approx 10, corresponding to virial temperatures (\sim 10^4K) for which cooling can be ensured by atomic transitions. H…
We use the clustering results obtained by Madgwick et al. (2003) for a sample of 96,791 2dF galaxies with redshift 0.01 < z < 0.15 to study the distribution of late-type and early-type galaxies within dark matter haloes of different mass. The adopted method relies on the connection between the distribution of sources within haloes and their clustering properties by focussing on the issue of the halo occupation function i.e. the probability distribution of the number of galaxies brighter than some luminosity threshold hosted by a virialized halo of given mass. Within this framework, the distrib…
We study dark-matter halo density profiles in a high-resolution N-body simulation of an LCDM cosmology. Our statistical sample contains ~5000 haloes in the range 10^{11}-10^{14} M_sun. The profiles are parameterized by an NFW form with two parameters, an inner radius r_s and a virial radius r_v, and we define the halo concentration c_v = r_v/r_s. First, we find that, for a given halo mass, the redshift dependence of the median concentration is c_v ~ 1/(1+z), corresponding to a roughly constant r_s with redshift. We present an improved analytic treatment of halo formation that fits the measured…
We develop a new method to reconstruct the cosmic density field from the distribution of dark matter haloes above a certain mass threshold. Our motivation is that well-defined samples of galaxy groups/clusters, which can be used to represent the dark halo population, can now be selected from large redshift surveys of galaxies, and our ultimate goal is to use such data to reconstruct the cosmic density field in the local universe. Our reconstruction method starts with a sample of dark matter haloes above a given mass threshold. Each volume element in space is assigned to the domain of the neare…
We study the distribution function (DF) of dark matter particles in haloes of mass range 10^{14}--10^{15}\Msun. In the numerical part of this work we measure the DF for a sample of relaxed haloes formed in the simulation of a standard \LambdaCDM model. The DF is expressed as a function of energy E and the absolute value of the angular momentum L, a form suitable for comparison with theoretical models. By proper scaling we obtain the results that do not depend on the virial mass of the haloes. We demonstrate that the DF can be separated into energy and angular momentum components and propose a …
We model gas cooling in high-resolution N-body simulations in order to investigate the formation of the first generation of stars. We follow a region of a LCDM universe especially selected to contain a rich cluster by the present day. The properties of the dark haloes that form in these sub-solar mass resolution simulations are presented in a companion paper by Gao et al. The first gas clouds able to cool by molecular hydrogen line emission collapse at extremely high redshift, z ~ 47, when the mass of the dark halo is 2.4 x 10^5 Msun/h. By z ~ 30, a substantial population of haloes are capable…
We present a new determination of the cluster mass function and velocity dispersion function in a volume $\sim10^7 h^3$Mpc$^{-3}$ using the Fourth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We use the caustic technique to remove foreground and background galaxies. The cluster virial mass function agrees well with recent estimates from both X-ray observations and cluster richnesses. The mass function lies between those predicted by the First-Year and Three-Year WMAP data. We constrain the cosmological parameters $Ω_m$ and $σ_8$ and find good agreement with WMAP and constraints from ot…
We perform a detailed investigation into the disruption of central cusps via the transfer of energy from sinking massive objects. Constant density inner regions form at the radius where the enclosed mass approximately matches the mass of the infalling body. We explore parameter space using numerical simulations and give an empirical relation for the size of the resulting core within structures that have different initial cusp slopes. We find that infalling bodies always stall at the edge of these newly formed cores, experiencing no dynamical friction over many dynamical times. As applications,…
We investigate the physical mechanisms of tidal heating and satellite disruption in cold dark matter host haloes using N-body simulations based on cosmological initial conditions. We show the importance of resonant shocks and resonant torques with the host halo to satellite heating. A resonant shock (torque) couples the radial (tangential) motion of a satellite in its orbit to its phase space. For a satellite on a circular orbit, an ILR-like resonance dominates the heating and this heating results in continuous satellite mass loss. We estimate the requirements for simulations to achieve these …
The hierarchical clustering inherent in Lambda-CDM cosmology seems to produce many of the observed characteristics of large-scale structure. But some glaring problems still remain, including the over-prediction (by a factor 10) of the number of dwarf galaxies within the virialized population of the local group. Several secondary effects have already been proposed to resolve this problem. It is still not clear, however, whether the principal solution rests with astrophysical processes, such as early feedback from supernovae, or possibly with as yet undetermined properties of the dark matter its…
