We study the dynamics of the spiral magnet under the charge current by solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation numerically. In the steady state, the current ${\vec j}$ induces (i) the parallel shift of the spiral pattern with velocity $v=(β/α)j$ ($α$, $β$: the Gilbert damping coefficients), (ii) the uniform magnetization $M$ parallel or anti-parallel to the current depending on the chirality of the spiral and the ratio $β/ α$, and (iii) the change in the wavenumber $k$ of the spiral. These are analyzed by the continuum effective theory using the scaling argument, and the various nonequilibrium phenomena such as the chaotic behavior and current-induced annealing are also discussed.
The ferroelectric polarization of triangular-lattice antiferromagnets induced by helical spin-spiral order is not explained by any existing model of magnetic-order-driven ferroelectricity. We resolve this problem by developing a general theory for the ferroelectric polarization induced by spin-spiral order and then by evaluating the coefficients needed to specify the general theory on the basis of density functional calculations. Our theory correctly describes the ferroelectricity of triangular-lattice antiferromagnets driven by helical spin-spiral order, and incorporates known models of magne…
We study the structure of domain walls in multiferroic magnets with the conical spiral ordering. We formulate a simple spin model which has a conical spiral ground state in absence of magnetic anisotropies. We find a transition from the regime where ferromagnetic and ferroelectric domain walls are clamped to the regime where they are decoupled and derive a continuum model describing rotation of the spiral plane at the domain wall. The importance of these results for the switching phenomena observed in CoCr2O4 is discussed.
We propose a microscopic theory for magnetic switching of electric polarization (P) in the spin-spiral multiferroics by taking TbMnO3 and DyMnO3 as examples. We reproduce their phase diagrams under a magnetic field H_ex by Monte-Carlo simulation of an accurate spin model and reveal that competition among the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, spin anisotropy, and spin exchange is controlled by the applied H_ex, resulting in magnetic transitions accompanied by reorientation or vanishing of P. We also discuss the relevance of the proposed mechanisms to many other multiferroics such as LiCu2O2, M…
We study the spin-1 honeycomb lattice magnets with frustrated exchange interactions. The proposed microscopic spin model contains first and second neighbor Heisenberg interactions as well as the single-ion anisotropy. We establish a rich phase diagram that includes a featureless quantum paramagnet and various spin spiral states induced by the mechanism of order by quantum disorder. Although the quantum paramagnet is dubbed featureless, it is shown that, the magnetic excitations develop a contour degeneracy in the reciprocal space at the band minima. These contour degenerate excitations are res…
The compound MnAu$_2$ is one of the oldest known spin-spiral materials, yet the nature of the spiral state is still not clear. The spiral cannot be explained via relativistic effects due to the short pitch of the spiral and the weakness of the spin-orbit interaction in Mn, and another common mechanism, nesting, is ruled out as direct calculations show no features at the relevant wave vector. We propose that the spiral state is induced by a competition between the short-range antiferromagnetic exchange and a long-range interaction induced by the polarization of Au bands, similar to double excha…
The spiral magnetic structure and underlying spin lattice of BiMnFe2O6 are investigated by low-temperature neutron powder diffraction and density functional theory band structure calculations. In spite of the random distribution of the Mn3+ and Fe3+ cations, this compound undergoes a transition into an incommensurate antiferromagnetically ordered state below TN ~ 220 K. The magnetic structure is characterized by the propagation vector k=[0,beta,0] with beta ~ 0.14 and the P22_12_11'(0 β0)0s0s magnetic superspace symmetry. It comprises antiferromagnetic helixes propagating along the b-axis. The…
Like the twisting control in magic angle twisted bilayer graphenes, the stacking control is another mechanical approach to manipulate the fundamental properties of solids, especially the van der Waals materials. We explore the stacking-induced magnetic frustration and the spiral spin liquid on a multilayer triangular lattice antiferromagnet where the system is built from ABC stacking with competing intralayer and interlayers couplings. By combining the nematic bond theory and the self-consistent Gaussian approximation, we establish the phase diagram for this ABC-stacked multilayer magnet. It i…
The optical response of spiral magnets is studied, with special attention to its electromagnon features. We show that these features trace back to the resonant magnetoelectric response resulting from the spiral ordering (irrespective of any concomitant ferroelectricity). This response, being magnetoelectric in nature, not always can be reduced to an effective electric permittivity. We argue that electromagnons in spiral magnets can produce, in addition to the observed peaks in the optical absorption of multiferroics, a (dynamically enhanced) optical rotation and a negative refractive index beh…
We discuss theoretically frustrated Heisenberg spiral magnets in magnetic field $\bf H$. We demonstrate that small anisotropic spin interactions (single-ion biaxial anisotropy or dipolar forces) select the plane in which spins rotate (spiral plane) and can lead to the spiral plane flop upon in-plane field increasing. Expressions for the critical fields $H_{flop}$ are derived. It is shown that measuring of $H_{flop}$ is an efficient and simple method of quantifying the anisotropy in the system (as the measurement of spin-flop fields in collinear magnets with axial anisotropy). Corresponding rec…

We present a systematic study of spin and lattice dynamics in the quasi-one-dimensional spiral magnet CuBr2, using Raman scattering in conjunction with infrared and neutron spectroscopy. Along with the development of spin correlations upon cooling, we observe a rich set of broad Raman bands at energies that correspond to phonon-dispersion energies near the one-dimensional magnetic wave vector. The low-energy bands further exhibit a distinct intensity maximum at the spiral magnetic ordering temperature. We attribute these unusual observations to two possible underlying mechanisms: (1) formation…
We report the direct observation of a magnetic-feld induced long-wavelength spin spiral modulation in the chiral compound Ba3TaFe3Si2O14. This new spin texture emerges out of a chiral helical ground state, and is hallmarked by the onset of a unique contribution to the bulk electric polarization, the sign of which depends on the crystal chirality. The periodicity of the feld induced modulation, several hundreds of nm depending on the field value, is comparable to the length scales of mesoscopic topological defects such as skyrmions, merons and solitons. The phase transition and observed thresho…
Structure and properties of two-dimensional spiral textures in helical ferromagnets have been studied. In these magnetic mediums have been predicted new types of periodical structures - spiral lattices.
Competing magnetic exchange interactions often result in non-collinear magnetic states, such as spin spirals, which break the inversion symmetry and induce ferroelectric polarization. The resulting strong interactions between magnetic and dielectric degrees of freedom lead to a technologically important possibility to control magnetic order by electric fields and to electromagnons, magnetic excitations that can be excited by an electric dipole of the electromagnetic field. Here we study the effects of chiral domain walls on magnetoelectric properties of spiral magnets. We use a quasi-1D model …
The magnetic-field-induced 90-degree flop of ferroelectric polarization P in a spin-spiral multiferroic material TbMnO3 is theoretically studied based on a microscopic spin model. We find that the direction of the P-flop or the choice of +Pa or -Pa after the flop is governed by magnetic torques produced by the applied magnetic field H acting on the Mn spins and thus is selected in a deterministic way, in contradistinction to the naively anticipated probabilistic flop. This mechanism resolves a puzzle of the previously reported memory effect in the P direction depending on the history of the ma…
A general, symmetry-allowed model of nearest-neighbour interactions for MnSi-like magnets is presented. A left-handed helical magnet phase occurs within a large parameter space of the model, which is explored via numerical simulation. The relations between microscopic features of the spiral structure and various model parameters, including an external magnetic field, are determined and show good agreement with predictions from free energy considerations. A skyrmion structure is stabilized near the boundary.
We present a theory describing spiral magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) subject to bond disorder at small concentration $c$ of defects. It is assumed that both DMI and exchange coupling are changed on imperfect bonds. Qualitatively the same physical picture is obtained in two models which are considered in detail: B20 cubic helimagnets and layered magnets in which DMI leads to a long-period spiral ordering perpendicular to layers. We find that the distortion of the spiral magnetic ordering around a single imperfect bond is long-range: values of additional turns of spins deca…
We demonstrate that dynamics of the ab-spiral-spin order in a magnetoelectric multiferroic Eu0.55Y0.45MnO3 can be unambiguously probed through optical second harmonic signals, generated via the spin-induced ferroelectric polarization. In the case of relatively weak photoexcitation, the ferroelectric and the spiral-spin order remains interlocked, both relaxing through spin-lattice relaxation in the non-equilibrium state. When the additional optical pulse illuminating sample is intense enough to induced a local phase transition thermally, the system creates a metastable state of the bc-spiral-spi…
We use resonant soft X-ray diffraction to track the photo-induced dynamics of the antiferromagnetic structure in a NdNiO$_{3}$ thin film. Femtosecond laser pulses with a photon energy of 0.61 eV, resonant with electron transfer between long-bond and short-bond nickel sites, are used to excite the material and drive an ultrafast insulator-metal transition. Polarization sensitive soft X-ray diffraction, resonant to the nickel L$_{3}$-edge, then probes the evolution of the underlying magnetic spiral as a function of time delay with 80 picosecond time resolution. By modelling the azimuthal depende…

We study the fate of spin-1/2 spiral-ordered two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets that are disordered by quantum fluctuations. A crucial role is played by the topological point defects of the spiral phase, which are known to have a Z2 character. Previous works established that a nontrivial quantum spin-liquid phase results when the spiral is disordered without proliferating the Z2 vortices. Here, we show that when the spiral is disordered by proliferating and condensing these vortices, valence-bond solid ordering occurs due to quantum Berry phase effects. We develop a general theory for th…
The formation of coplanar spin spirals is a common motif in the magnetic ordering of many frustrated magnets. For classical antiferromagnets, geometric frustration can lead to a massively degenerate ground state manifold of spirals whose propagation vectors can be described, depending on the lattice geometry, by points (triangular), lines (fcc), surfaces (frustrated diamond) or completely flat bands (pyrochlore). Here we demonstrate an exact mathematical correspondence of these spiral manifolds of classical antiferromagnets with the Fermi surfaces of free-fermion band structures. We provide an…
We study theoretically the dynamics of the spin textures, i.e., Skyrmion crystal (SkX) and spiral structure (SS), in two-dimensional helical magnets under external current. By numerically solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, it is found that (i) the critical current density of the motion is much lower for SkX compared with SS in agreement with the recent experiment, (ii) there is no intrinsic pinning effect for SkX and the deformation of the internal structure of Skyrmion reduces the pinning effect dramatically, (iii) the Bragg intensity of SkX shows strong time-dependence as can be o…
