We present a detailed description of a zero temperature phase transition between superconducting and diffusive metallic states in very thin wires due to a Cooper pair breaking mechanism. The dissipative critical theory contains current reducing fluctuations in the guise of both quantum and thermally activated phase slips. A full cross-over phase diagram is computed via an expansion in the inverse number of complex components of the superconducting order parameter (one in the physical case). The fluctuation corrections to the direct current electrical and thermal conductivities are determined, and we find that the electrical conductivity has a non-monotonic temperature dependence in the metallic phase which may be consistent with recent experimental results on ultra-narrow wires. In the quantum critical regime, the ratio of the thermal to electrical conductivity displays a linear temperature dependence and thus the Wiedemann-Franz law is obeyed, with a new universal experimentally verifiable Lorenz number.
We predict current-induced formation of equilibrium phase textures for a multicomponent superconducting order parameter. Using the two-component Ginzburg-Landau and Usadel equations, we show that, for weakly coupled co-moving superconducting condensates, dc current I first causes breakdown of the phase locked state at $I>I_{c1}$ followed by the formation of intrinsic phase textures well below the depairing current $I_d$. These phase textures can manifest themselves in multilayer structures, atomic Bose condensate mixtures in optical lattices and two-gap superconductors, particularly MgB$_2$, w…
We study analytically the effects of inhomogeneous pairing interactions in short coherence length superconductors, using a spatially varying Bogoliubov-deGennes model. Within the Born approximation, it reproduces all of the standard Abrikosov-Gor'kov pairbreaking and gaplessness effects, even in the absence of actual magnetic impurities. For pairing disorder on a single site, the T-matrix gives rise to bound states within the BCS gap. Our results are compared with recent scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ with Zn or Ni impurities.
The conventional theory of superconducting alloys does not take into account a discreet character of impurities. Experimental data for superfluid $^3$He in aerogel and for some of high-$T_c$ superconductors reveal a significant discrepancy between the observed temperatures $T_c$ of their transitions in the superfluid or superconducting state and that predicted by the theory. Here a theoretical scheme is presented for finding corrections to the $T_c$ originating from spatial correlations between impurities. Analysis is limited to the Ginzburg and Landau temperature region. The shift of $T_c$ wi…
We describe the thermal and electrical conductivities of quasi-one dimensional wires, across a quantum phase transition from a superconductor to a metal induced by pairbreaking perturbations. Fluctuation corrections to BCS theory motivate a field theory for quantum criticality. We describe deviations in the Wiedemann-Franz ratio from the Lorenz number, which can act as sensitive tests of the theory. We also describe the crossovers out of the quantum critical region into the metallic and superconducting phases.
We consider the effect of nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities on the superheating field $H_s$ in a type-II superconductor. We solved the Eilenberger equations, which take into account the nonlinear pairbreaking of Meissner screening currents, and calculated $H_s(T)$ for arbitrary temperatures and impurity concentrations in a single-band s-wave superconductor with a large Ginzburg-Landau parameter. At low temperatures nonmagnetic impurities suppress a weak maximum in $H_s(T)$ which has been predicted for the clean limit, resulting instead in a maximum of $H_s$ as a function of impurity concentr…
Investigations of MgB2 and Fe-based superconductors in recent years have revealed many unusual effects of multiband superconductivity but manifestations of anisotropic multiband effects in the critical current density Jc have not been addressed experimentally, mostly because of the difficulties to measure Jc along the c-axis. To investigate the effect of very different intrinsic anisotropies of sigma and pi electron bands in MgB2 on current transport, we grew epitaxial films with tilted c-axis (THETA ~ 19.5°), which enabled us to measure the components of Jc both along the ab-plane and the c-a…
We report numerical calculations of a dynamic pairbreaking current density $J_d$ and a critical superfluid velocity $v_d$ in a nonequilibrium superconductor carrying a uniform, large-amplitude ac current density $J(t)=J_a\sinΩt$ with $Ω$ well below the gap frequency $Ω\ll Δ_0/\hbar$. The dependencies $J_d(Ω,T)$ and $v_d(Ω,T)$ near the critical temperature $T_c$ were calculated from either the full time-dependent nonequilibrium equations for a dirty s-wave superconductor and the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations for a gapped superconductor, taking into account the GL relaxation ti…
We analyze the proximity effect of superconductor/ferromagnet nanostructures and point out that the scattering of quasiparticle of spin-triplet pairs by local magnetic moments leads to large resistance peak slightly below the superconducting transition temperature of the superconductor. Both the temperature and the magnitude of the resistance peak decrease with increasing magnetic field, which agree quite well with the experimental results reported in [Nature Phys. 6, 389 (2010)].
Theoretical results for the ab-plane tunneling conductance in the d-wave model for high Tc superconductors are presented. The d-wave model predicts surface bound states below the maximum gap. A sub-dominant order parameter, stabilized by the surface, leads to a splitting of the zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in zero external field and to spontaneous surface currents. In a magnetic field screening currents shift the quasiparticle bound state spectrum and lead to a voltage splitting of the ZBCP that is linear in H at low fields, and saturates at a pairbreaking critical field of order 3 Tesla.…
Semiconducting nanowires in proximity to superconductors are promising experimental systems for Majorana fermions which may ultimately be used as building blocks for topological quantum computers. A serious challenge in the experimental realization of the Majorana fermion in these semiconductor-superconductor nanowire structures is tuning the semiconductor chemical potential in close proximity to the metallic superconductor. We show that, presently realizable structures in experiments with tunable chemical potential lead to Majorana resonances, which are interesting in their own right, but do …
An external magnetic field is needed to drive a nanowire in proximity to an s-wave superconductor into a topological regime which supports Majorana end states. However, a magnetic field generally suppresses the proximity superconducting gap induced on the nanowire. In recent experiments using InSb nanowires coupled to Al, the induced proximity gap vanishes at magnetic fields B~1T. This results in a small superconducting gap on the wire and a narrow topological regime which is proportional to the strength of the magnetic field. In this work, we show that by placing nanowires in proximity to rec…
Properties of one-dimensional superconducting wires depend on physical processes with different characteristic lengths. To identify the process dominant in the critical regime we have studied trans- port properties of very narrow (9-20 nm) MoGe wires fabricated by advanced electron-beam lithography in wide range of lengths, 1-25 microns. We observed that the wires undergo a superconductor -insulator transition that is controlled by cross sectional area of a wire and possibly also by the thickness-to-width ratio. Mean-field critical temperature decreases exponentially with the inverse of the wi…
We consider superconducting nanowire proximity coupled to superconductor / ferromagnet / superconductor junction, where the magnetization penetrates into superconducting segment in nanowire decaying as $\sim\exp[-\frac{\mid n \mid}ξ]$ with site index $n$ and the decay length $ξ$. We tune chemical potential and spin-orbit coupling so that topological superconducting regime hosting Majorana fermion is realized for long $ξ$. We find that when $ξ$ becomes shorter, zero energy state at the interface between superconductor and ferromagnet splits into two away from zero energy. Accordingly, the behav…
In this Letter, we first formulate an effective theory, which generally captures long-range proximity effects of a surface system weakly coupled to an s-wave superconductor. The long-range proximity effects include both the emergent long-range pairing and hopping interactions in the surface system. We then model the Rashba spin-orbit-coupled nanowire in proximity with an s-wave superconductor by taking into account the emergent nonlocal effects in the weak-coupling limit. In this limit the induced superconducting pair potential is found much smaller than that of the host superconductor, which …
We study the effect of morphology on the low temperature behavior of superconducting nanowires of length $\approx$100 nm. A well-defined superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is observed only in homogenous wires, in which case the transition occurs when the normal resistance is close to $h/4e^2$. Inhomogeneous wires, on the other hand, exhibit a mixed behavior, such that signatures of the superconducting and insulating regimes can be observed in the same sample. The resistance versus temperature curves of inhomogeneous wires show multiple steps, each corresponding to a weak link constricti…
Physical properties of anisotropic superconductors like the critical temperature and others depend sensitively on the electron mean free path. The sensitivity to impurity scattering and the resulting anomalies are considered a characteristic feature of strongly anisotropic pairing. These anomalies are usually analyzed in terms of s-wave impurity scattering which leads to universal pair breaking effects depending on only two scattering parameters, the mean free path and the impurity cross section. We investigate here corrections coming from anisotropies in the scattering cross section, and find…
We establish the superconductor-insulator phase diagram for quasi-one dimensional wires by measuring a large set of MoGe nanowires. This diagram is consistent with the Chakravarty-Schmid-Bulgadaev phase boundary, namely with the critical resistance being equal to R_Q = h/4e^2. We find that transport properties of insulating nanowires exhibit a weak Coulomb blockade behavior.
We analyze the prospects for stabilizing Majorana zero modes in semiconductor nanowires that are proximity-coupled to higher-temperature superconductors. We begin with the case of iron pnictides which, though they are s-wave superconductors, are believed to have superconducting gaps that change sign. We then consider the case of cuprate superconudctors. We show that a nanowire on a step-like surface, especially in an orthorhombic material such as YBCO, can support Majorana zero modes at an elevated temperature.
Electronic excitations above the ground state must overcome an energy gap in superconductors with spatially-homogeneous s-wave pairing. In contrast, inhomogeneous superconductors such as those with magnetic impurities or weak links, or heterojunctions containing normal metals or quantum dots, can host subgap electronic excitations that are generically known as Andreev bound states (ABSs). With the advent of topological superconductivity, a new kind of ABS with exotic qualities, known as Majorana bound state (MBS), has been discovered. We review the main properties of ABSs and MBSs, and the sta…
Superconducting nanowires are the dual elements to Josephson junctions, with quantum phase-slip processes replacing the tunneling of Cooper pairs. When the quantum phase-slip amplitude ES is much smaller than the inductive energy EL, the nanowire responds as a superconducting inductor. When the inductive energy is small, the response is capacitive. The crossover at low temperatures as a function of ES/EL is discussed and compared with earlier experimental results. For one-dimensional and two-dimensional arrays of nanowires quantum phase transitions are expected as a function of ES/EL. They can…
We characterize parallel double quantum dot Josephson junctions based on closely-grown double nanowires bridged by in-situ deposited superconductors. The parallel double dot behavior occurs despite the closeness of the nanowires and the potential risk of nanowire clamping during growth. By tuning the charge filling and lead couplings, we map out the simplest parallel double quantum dot Yu-Shiba-Rusinov phase diagram. Our quasi-independent two-wire hybrids show promise for the realization of exotic topological phases.
We study the tunneling effect in an AIII-class insulator proximity coupled with a spin-singlet $s$-wave superconductor, in which three phases are characterized by the integer topological invariant $\mathcal{N}$. By solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation explicitly, we analytically obtain a normal reflection coefficient $R_{σσ'}$ and an Andreev reflection coefficient $A_{σσ'}$, and derive a charge conductance formula, where $σ(σ')$ is the spin index of a reflected (injected) wave. The resulting conductance indicates a wide variety of line shapes: (i)gap structure without coherence peaks for $…
We study the behavior of Cooper pair amplitudes that emerge when a two-dimensional superconductor is coupled to two parallel nanowires, focusing on the conditions for realizing odd-frequency pair amplitudes in the absence of spin-orbit coupling or magnetism. In general, any finite tunneling between the superconductor and the two nanowires induces odd-frequency spin-singlet pair amplitudes in the substrate as well as a substantial odd-frequency interwire pairing, both of which vanish locally. Interestingly, in the regime of strong superconductor-nanowire tunneling, we find that the presence of …
We report on sub-gap transport measurements of an InAs nanowire coupled to niobium nitride leads at high magnetic fields. We observe a zero-bias anomaly (ZBA) in the differential conductance of the nanowire for certain ranges of magnetic field and chemical potential. The ZBA can oscillate in width with either magnetic field or chemical potential; it can even split and reform. We discuss how our results relate to recent predictions of hybridizing Majorana fermions in semiconducting nanowires, while considering more mundane explanations.
Exotic superconductors, such as high T$_C$, topological, and heavy-fermion superconductors, require phase sensitive measurements to determine the underlying pairing. Here we investigate the proximity-induced superconductivity in nanowires of SnTe, where an $s\pm is^{\prime}$ superconducting state is produced that lacks the time-reversal and valley-exchange symmetry of the parent SnTe. This effect, in conjunction with a ferroelectric distortion of the lattice at low temperatures, results in a marked alteration of the properties of Josephson junctions fabricated using SnTe nanowires. This work e…
We report measurements of the microwave surface impedance of the borocarbide family of superconductors LnNi2B2C (Ln=Y, Er, Tm, Ho). The experiments enable direct measurements of the superfluid density, and are particularly sensitive to the influence of magnetic pairbreaking. In HoNi2B2C the antiferromagnetic transition is clearly observed at zero field, and leads to a drastic reduction of the superfluid density, which recovers at lower temperatures. In ErNi2B2C the antiferromagnetic transition is not seen in zero field data. Magnetic effects are responsible for anomalies in the low temperature…
A planar Josephson junction with a normal metal attached on its top surface will form a hollow nanowire structure due to its three dimensional nature. In such hollow nanowire structure, the magnetic flux induced by a small magnetic field (about 0.01T) will tune the system into topologically non-trivial phase and therefore two Majorana zero-modes will form at the ends of the nanowire. Through tuning the chemical potential of the normal metal, the topologically non-trivial phase can be obtained for almost all energy within the band. Furthermore, the system can be conveniently tuned between the t…
Transport measurements were made on a system consisting of a zinc nanowire array sandwiched between two bulk superconducting electrodes (Sn or In). It was found that the superconductivity of Zn nanowires of 40 nm diameter is suppressed either completely or partially by the superconducting electrodes. When the electrodes are driven into their normal state by a magnetic field, the nanowires switch back to their superconducting state. This phenomenon is significantly weakened when one of the two superconducting electrodes is replaced by a normal metal. The phenomenon is not seen in wires with dia…
In this paper we discuss the interplay of quantum fluctuations and dissipation in uniform superconducting nanowires. We consider a phenomenological model with superconducting and normal components, and a finite equilibration rate between these two-fluids. We find that phase-slip dipoles proliferate in the wire, and decouple the two-fluids within its bulk. This implies that the the normal fluid only couples to the superconductor fluid through the leads at the edges of the wire, and the {\it local} dissipation is unimportant. Therefore, while long wires have a superconductor-metal transition tun…
Majorana fermions in some model semiconductor nanowires proximity coupled with \emph{s}-wave superconductor have been investigated, as well as other intragap bound states in topological phase of a Rashba nanowire with non-uniform spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Various sources of disorder, such as disorder in semiconductor nanowire, bulk superconductor and semiconductor-superconductor interface, are included to characterize their effects on the stability of the topological phase. In the case of multiband semiconducting nanowires, the phase diagram of the system as a function of the chemical pote…
Conductance at zero source-drain voltage bias in InSb nanowire/NbTiN superconductor devices exhibits peaks that are close to a quantized value of $2e^2/h$. The nearly quantized resonances evolve in the tunnel barrier strength, magnetic field and magnetic field orientation in a way consistent with Majorana zero modes. Our devices feature two tunnel probes on both ends of the nanowire separated by a 400 nm nanowire segment covered by the superconductor. We only find nearly quantized zero bias peaks localized to one end of the nanowire, while conductance dips are observed for the same parameters …
The phenomenon of superconductivity occurs in the phase space of three principal parameters: temperature T, magnetic field B, and current density Jd . The critical temperature Tc is one of the first parameters that is measured and in a certain way defines the superconductor. From the practical applications point of view, of equal importance is the upper critical magnetic field Bc2 and conventional critical current density Jc (above which the system begins to show resistance without entering the normal state). However, a seldom-measured parameter, the depairing current density Jd , holds the sa…
Implementing superconductors capable of proximity-inducing a large energy-gap in semiconductors in the presence of strong magnetic fields is a major goal towards applications of semiconductor/superconductor hybrid materials in future quantum information technologies. Here, we study the performance of devices consisting of InAs nanowires in electrical contact to molybdenum-rhenium (MoRe) superconducting alloys. The MoRe thin films exhibit transition temperatures ~10 K and critical fields exceeding 6 T. Normal/superconductor devices enabled tunnel spectroscopy of the corresponding induced superc…
Motivated by recent experiments searching for Majorana zero modes in tripartite semiconductor nanowires with epitaxial superconductor and ferromagnetic-insulator layers, we explore the emergence of topological superconductivity in such devices for paradigmatic arrangements of the three constituents. Accounting for the competition between magnetism and superconductivity, we treat superconductivity self consistently and describe the electronic properties, including the superconducting and ferromagnetic proximity effects, within a direct wave-function approach. We conclude that the most viable me…
Below a certain temperature Tc (typically cryogenic), some materials lose their electric resistance R entering a superconducting state. Folowing the general trend toward a large scale integration of a greater number of electronic components, it is desirable to use superconducting elements in order to minimize heat dissipation. It is expected that the basic property of a superconductor, i.e. dissipationless electric current, will be preserved at reduced scales required by modern nanoelectronics. Unfortunately, there are indications that for a certain critical size limit of the order of 10 nm, b…
In this article we study superconductor-insulator transitions within the general framework of an attractive Hubbard model. This is a well-defined model of s-wave superconductivity which permits different tuning parameters (disorder and field). Furthermore, it allows a comparison of various analytical and computational approaches in order to gain a complete understanding of the various effects of amplitude and phase fluctuations. We present a systematic pedagogical approach, aiming to equip the lay reader with enough apparatus to be able to understand the numerical calculations, reproduce some …
The novel idea that spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and $s$-wave pairing can lead to induced $p$-wave pairing at strong magnetic limit has stimulated widespread interests in the whole community for the searching of Majorana Fermions (MFs), a self-hermitian particle, in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures. However, this system has several inherent limitations that prohibit the realization and identification of MFs with the major advances of semiconductor nanotechnology. We show that these limitations can be resolved by replacing the $s$-wave superconductor with type-II Fulde-Ferrell (FF) s…
We explore the signatures of Majorana fermions in a nanowire based topological superconductor-quantum dot-topological superconductor hybrid device by charge transport measurements. The device is made from an epitaxially grown InSb nanowire with two superconductor Nb contacts on a Si/SiO$_2$ substrate. At low temperatures, a quantum dot is formed in the segment of the InSb nanowire between the two Nb contacts and the two Nb contacted segments of the InSb nanowire show superconductivity due to the proximity effect. At zero magnetic field, well defined Coulomb diamonds and the Kondo effect are ob…

We report on magnetoresistance oscillations in superconducting NbNx nanowires synthesized through ammonia gas annealing of NbSe3 precursor nanostructures. Even though the transverse dimensions of the nanowires are much larger than the superconducting coherence length, the voltage-current characteristics of these nanowires at low temperatures are reminiscent of one-dimensional superconductors where quantum phase slips are associated with the origin of dissipation. We show that both the magnetoresistance oscillations and voltage-current characteristics observed in this work result from the granu…
A heterostructure consisting of a topological insulator (TI) nanowire brought into proximity with a superconducting layer provides a promising route to achieve topological superconductivity and associated Majorana bound states (MBSs). Here, we study effects caused by such a coupling between a thin layer of an $s$-wave superconductor and a TI nanowire. We show that there is a distinct phenomenology arising from the metallization of states in the TI nanowire by the superconductor. In the strong coupling limit, required to induce a large superconducting pairing potential, we find that metallizati…
Superconducting nanowires are very important due to their applications ranging from quantum technology to astronomy. In this work, we implement a non-invasive process to fabricate nanowires of high-$T_\text{c}$ superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (BSCCO). We demonstrate that our nanowires can be used as bolometers in the visible range with very high responsivity of 9.7 $\times$ 10$^{3}$ V/W. Interestingly, in a long (30 $μ$m) nanowire of 9 nm thickness and 700 nm width, we observe bias current-dependent localized spots of maximum photovoltage. Moreover, the scalability of the bolomete…
A minimal model for the hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowire Majorana platform is developed that fully captures the effects of the low-energy renormalization of the nanowire modes arising from the presence of the parent superconductor. In this model, the parent superconductor is an active component that participates explicitly in the low-energy physics, not just a passive partner that only provides proximity-induced Cooper pairs for the nanowire. This treatment on an equal footing of the superconductor and the semiconductor has become necessary in view of recent experiments, which do n…
In semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures a topological phase transition is expected as a function of chemical potential or magnetic field strength. We show that signatures of this transition can be observed in nonlinear Coulomb blockade transport through a ring shaped structure. In particular, for a fixed electron parity of the ring, the flux periodicity of the neutral excitation spectrum changes from the usual h/2e periodicity to a characteristic h/e periodicity when tuning the system from the topologically trivial to the nontrivial phase. We relate the h/e periodicity to the recentl…
The temporary resistance triggered by phase slip will result in the switching of superconductor nanowire to a permanent normal state, decreasing the switching current. In this letter, we propose an improved impedance matching circuit that releases the transition triggered by phase slips to the load resistor through the RF port of a bias tee. The transportation properties with different load resistors indicate that the switching current decreases due to the reflection caused by impedance mismatching, and is maximized by optimized impedance matching. Compared to the same setup without impedance …
Using Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations we numerically calculate the disorder averaged density of states of disordered semiconductor nanowires driven into a putative topological p-wave superconducting phase by spin-orbit coupling, Zeeman spin splitting and s-wave superconducting proximity effect induced by a nearby superconductor. Comparing with the corresponding theoretical self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) results treating disorder effects, we comment on the topological phase diagram of the system in the presence of increasing disorder. Although disorder strongly suppresses the ze…
Majorana fermions are particles identical to their own antiparticles. They have been theoretically predicted to exist in topological superconductors. We report electrical measurements on InSb nanowires contacted with one normal (Au) and one superconducting electrode (NbTiN). Gate voltages vary electron density and define a tunnel barrier between normal and superconducting contacts. In the presence of magnetic fields of order 100 mT we observe bound, mid-gap states at zero bias voltage. These bound states remain fixed to zero bias even when magnetic fields and gate voltages are changed over con…
We consider wires near a zero temperature transition between superconducting and metallic states. The critical theory obeys hyperscaling, which leads to a universal frequency, temperature, and length dependence of the conductance; quantum and thermal phase slips are contained within this critical theory. Normal (NN), superconducting (SS) and mixed (SN) leads on the wire determine distinct universality classes. For the SN case, wires near the critical point have a universal d.c. conductance which is independent of the length of the wire at low temperatures.
We report on the observation of excitation of Majorana fermions in a Nb-InSb nanowire quantum dot-Nb hybrid system. The InSb nanowire quantum dot is formed between the two Nb contacts by weak Schottky barriers and is thus in the regime of strong couplings to the contacts. Due to the proximity effect, the InSb nanowire segments covered by superconductor Nb contacts turn to superconductors with a superconducting energy gap $Δ^*$. Under an applied magnetic field larger than a critical value for which the Zeeman energy in the InSb nanowire is $E_z\sim Δ^*$, the entire InSb nanowire is found to be …
We report the emergence of zero-energy states in the trivial phase of a short nanowire junction with strong spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field, formed by strong coupling between the nanowire and two superconductors. The zero-energy states appear in the junction when the superconductors induce a large energy shift in the nanowire, such that the junction naturally forms a quantum dot, a process that is highly tunable by the superconductor width. Most importantly, we demonstrate that the zero-energy states produce a $π$-shift in the phase-biased supercurrent, which can be used as a simple too…
Semiconductor-superconductor hybrid systems are promising candidates for the realization Majorana fermions and topological order, i.e. topologically protected degeneracies, in solid state devices. We show that the topological order is mirrored in the excitation spectra and can be observed in nonlinear Coulomb blockade transport through a ring-shaped nanowire. Especially, the excitation spectrum is almost independent of magnetic flux in the topologically trivial phase but acquires a characteristic $h/e$ magnetic flux periodicity in the nontrivial phase. The transition between the trivial and no…
Granular aluminium is a high kinetic inductance thin film superconductor which, when formed into nanowires can undergo an intrinsic electromigration process. We use a combination of experimental and computational approaches to investigate the role of grain morphology and distribution in granular aluminium thin films, when formed into nanowire constrictions. Treating the granular aluminium film as a network of randomly distributed resistors with parameters motivated by the film microstructure allows us to model the electrical characteristics of the nanowires. This model provides estimates of th…
We consider a system of two one-dimensional nanowires coupled via an $s$-wave superconducting strip, a geometry that is capable of supporting Kramers pairs of Majorana fermions. By performing an exact analytical diagonalization of a tunneling Hamiltonian describing the proximity effect (via a Bogoliubov transformation), we show that the excitation gap of the system varies periodically on the scale of the Fermi wavelength in the limit where the interwire separation is shorter than the superconducting coherence length. Comparing with the excitation gaps in similar geometries containing only dire…
Irradiation with Pb ions was used to study the effect of disorder on the in-plane London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni). An increase of the irradiation dose results in a monotonic decrease of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, without affecting much the transition width. In both Co and Ni doped systems we find a power-law behavior, $Δλ(T) \propto T^n$, with the exponent $n$ systematically decreasing with the increase of disorder. This observation, supported by the theoretical analysis, conclusively points to a nodeless …
We study a semiconductor wire with strong spin-orbit coupling, which is proximity-coupled to a superconductor with chemical potential disorder. When tunneling at the semiconductor- superconductor interface is very weak, it is known that disorder in the superconductor does not affect the induced superconductivity nor, therefore, the effective topological superconductivity that emerges above a critical magnetic field. We demonstrate nonperturbatively how this result breaks down with stronger proximity coupling by obtaining the low-energy (i.e., subgap) excitation spectrum through direct numerica…
We study coherent transport through a semiconductor nanowire in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting due to an applied magnetic field. By employing analytical and numerical techniques we develop a theory for the Josephson effect in the superconductor-semiconductor nanowire-superconductor structure. We show that Josephson current through the clean semiconductor nanowire exhibits a number of interesting features due to the interplay between the Zeeman splitting and spin-orbit coupling. We also study effect how disorder in the nanowire affects Andreev bound-state energy spectr…
The interplay of quantum fluctuations and dissipation in chains of mesoscopic superconducting grains is analyzed, and the results are also applied to nanowires. It is shown that in 1-d arrays of resistively shunted Josephson junctions, the superconducting-normal charge relaxation within the grains plays an important role. At zero temperature, two superconducting phases can exist, depending primarily on the strength of the dissipation. In the fully superconducting phase (FSC), each grain acts superconducting, and the coupling to the dissipative conduction is important. In the SC* phase, the dis…
