This paper presents a state estimation approach for an uncertain linear equation with a non-invertible operator in Hilbert space. The approach addresses linear equations with uncertain deterministic input and noise in the measurements, which belong to a given convex closed bounded set. A new notion of a minimax observable subspace is introduced. By means of the presented approach, new equations describing the dynamics of a minimax recursive estimator for discrete-time non-causal differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) are presented. For the case of regular DAEs it is proved that the estimator's equation coincides with the equation describing the seminal Kalman filter. The properties of the estimator are illustrated by a numerical example.

Minimax optimization has been central in addressing various applications in machine learning, game theory, and control theory. Prior literature has thus far mainly focused on studying such problems in the continuous domain, e.g., convex-concave minimax optimization is now understood to a significant extent. Nevertheless, minimax problems extend far beyond the continuous domain to mixed continuous-discrete domains or even fully discrete domains. In this paper, we study mixed continuous-discrete minimax problems where the minimization is over a continuous variable belonging to Euclidean space an…

There has been a long history of using ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to understand the dynamics of discrete-time algorithms (DTAs). Surprisingly, there are still two fundamental and unanswered questions: (i) it is unclear how to obtain a \emph{suitable} ODE from a given DTA, and (ii) it is unclear the connection between the convergence of a DTA and its corresponding ODEs. In this paper, we propose a new machinery -- an $O(s^r)$-resolution ODE framework -- for analyzing the behavior of a generic DTA, which (partially) answers the above two questions. The framework contains three steps:…
In this paper, we study a discrete-time stochastic optimal control problem under distribution uncertainty with convex control domain. By weak convergence method and Sion's minimax theorem, we obtain the variational inequality for cost functional under a reference probability $P^{\ast}$. Moreover, under the square integrability condition for noise and control, we establish the discrete-time stochastic maximum principle under $P^{\ast}$. Finally, we introduce a backward algorithm to calculate the reference probability $P^{\ast}$ and the optimal control $u^{\ast}$.
The Discrete-Time Generalized Algebraic Riccati Equation: Order Reduction and Solutions' Structure
In this paper we consider a class of conjugate discrete-time Riccati equations, arising originally from the linear quadratic regulation problem for discrete-time antilinear systems. Under mild and reasonable assumptions, the existence of the maximal solution to the conjugate discrete-time Riccati equation, in which the control weighting matrix is nonsingular and its constant term is Hermitian, will be inherited to a transformed discrete-time algebraic Riccati equation. Based on this inheritance property, an accelerated fixed-point iteration is proposed for finding the maximal solution via the …
To address the issue of inaccurate distributions in practical stochastic systems, a minimax linear-quadratic control method is proposed using the Wasserstein metric. Our method aims to construct a control policy that is robust against errors in an empirical distribution of underlying uncertainty, by adopting an adversary that selects the worst-case distribution. The opponent receives a Wasserstein penalty proportional to the amount of deviation from the empirical distribution. A closed-form expression of the finite-horizon optimal policy pair is derived using a Riccati equation. The result is …
Algebraic Riccati equations (AREs) have been extensively applicable in linear optimal control problems and many efficient numerical methods were developed. The most attention of numerical solutions is the (almost) stabilizing solution in the past works. Nevertheless, it is an interesting and challenging issue in finding the extremal solutions of AREs which play a vital role in the applications. In this paper, based on the semigroup property, an accelerated fixed-point iteration (AFPI) is developed for solving the extremal solutions of the discrete-time algebraic Riccati equation. In addition, …
