The nature of the low energy spectrum of frustrated quantum spin systems is investigated by means of a topological test introduced by Y. Hatsugai which enables to infer the possible existence or absence of a gap between the ground state and excited states of these systems. The test relies on the determination of an order parameter which is a Berry phase. The structure of the spectra of even and odd-legged systems in 2d and 3d is analyzed. Results are confronted with previous work.
A spin-1/2 frustrated two-leg ladder with four-spin exchange interaction is studied by quantized Berry phases. We found that the Berry phase successfully characterizes the Haldane phase in addition to the rung-singlet phase, and the dominant vector-chirality phase. The Hamiltonian of the Haldane phase is topologically identical to the S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. Decoupled models connected to the dominant vector-chirality phase revealed that the local object identified by the non-trivial ($π$) Berry phase is the direct product of two diagonal singlets.
Recently by using quantized Berry phases, a prescription for a local characterization of gapped topological insulators is given. One requires the ground state is gapped and is invariant under some anti-unitary operation. A spin liquid which is realized as a unique ground state of the Heisenberg spin system with frustrations is a typical target system, since pairwise exchange couplings are always time-reversal invariants even with frustrations. As for a generic Heisenberg model with a finite excitation gap, we locally modify the Hamiltonian by a continuous SU(2) twist only at a specific link an…
We investigate the properties of antiferromagnetic spin-S ladders with the help of local Berry phases defined by imposing a twist on one or a few local bonds. In gapped systems with time reversal symmetry, these Berry phases are quantized, hence able in principle to characterize different phases. In the case of a fully frustrated ladder where the total spin on a rung is a conserved quantity that changes abruptly upon increasing the rung coupling, we show that two Berry phases are relevant to detect such phase transitions: the rung Berry phase defined by imposing a twist on one rung coupling, a…
We examine a possible spin Hall effect for localized spin systems with no charge degrees of freedom. In this scenario, a longitudinal magnetic field gradient induces a transverse spin current carried by spin wave excitations with an anomalous velocity which is associated with the Berry curvature raised by spin chirality, in analogy with anomalous Hall effects in itinerant electron systems. Our argument is based on a semiclassical equations of motion applicable to general spin systems. Also, a microscopic model of frustrated magnets which exhibits the anamalous spin Hall effect is presented.
We propose the $\mathbb{Z}_Q$ Berry phase as a topological invariant for higher-order symmetry-protected topological (HOSPT) phases for two- and three-dimensional systems. It is topologically stable for electron-electron interactions assuming the gap remains open. As a concrete example, we show that the Berry phase is quantized in $\mathbb{Z}_4$ and characterizes the HOSPT phase of the extended Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes (BBH) model, which contains the next-nearest neighbor hopping and the intersite Coulomb interactions. In addition, we introduce the $\mathbb{Z}_4$ Berry phase for the spin-mod…
We consider topological order and dimer order in several frustrated spin ladder models, which are related to higher dimensional models of current interest; we also address the occurrence of fractionalized phases with deconfined spinon excitations in these models. Combining results obtained with both analytic and numerical methods, we discuss how the occurrence of dimerized or fractionalized phases are dictated by the system's geometry.
Recently it was argued that quantum phase transitions can be radically different from classical phase transitions with as a highlight the 'deconfined critical points' exhibiting fractionalization of quantum numbers due to Berry phase effects. Such transitions are supposed to occur in frustrated ('$J_1$-$J_2$') quantum magnets. We have developed a novel renormalization approach for such systems which is fully respecting the underlying lattice structure. According to our findings, another profound phenomenon is around the corner: a fluctuation induced (order-out-of-disorder) first order transiti…
The topological property of boson-fermion mixture in a one-dimensional optical superlattice is studied and the topological insulating phase of interacting boson-fermion mixture characterized by a nontrivial Berry phase is identified. The single-particle and boson-fermion exchanging excitation spectrums are calculated and we identify the boson-fermion exchanging excitation as the gapless topological excitation in the topological phase of the mixture. The different kinds of excitations are explained explicitly from the competition among the bulk gap, the on-site boson-boson and boson-fermion int…
We present a theory of three dimensional fractionalized topological insulators in the form of U(1) spin liquids with gapped fermionic spinons in the bulk and topologically protected gapless spinon surface states. Starting from a spin-1/2 model on a pyrochlore lattice, with frustrated antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic exchange interactions, we show that decomposition of the latter interactions, within slave-fermion representation of the spins, can naturally give rise to an emergent spin-orbit coupling for the spinons. This stabilizes a fractionalized topological insulators which also have bul…
Frustrated one-dimensional (1D) magnets are known as ideal playgrounds for new exotic quantum phenomena to emerge. We consider an elementary frustrated 1D system: the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ferromagnetic ($J_1$) Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic ($J_2$) interactions. On the basis of density-matrix renormalization group calculations we show the existence of a finite spin gap at $J_2/|J_1|>1/4$ and we find the ground state in this region to be a valence bond solid (VBS) with spin-singlet dimerization between third-neighbor sites. The VBS is the consequence of spontaneous …
We study topological properties of phase transition points of two topologically non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ classes (D and DIII) in one dimension by assigning a Berry phase defined on closed circles around the gap closing points in the parameter space of momentum and a transition driving parameter. While the topological property of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ system is generally characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant, we identify that it has a correspondence to the quantized Berry phase protected by the particle-hole symmetry, and then give a proper definition of Berry phase to the phas…
Geometrically frustrated magnets provide abundant opportunities for discovering complex spin textures, which sometimes yield unconventional electromagnetic responses in correlated electron systems. It is theoretically predicted that magnetic frustration may also promote a topologically nontrivial spin state, i.e., magnetic skyrmions, which are nanometric spin vortices. Empirically, however, skyrmions are essentially concomitant with noncentrosymmetric lattice structures or interfacial-symmetry-breaking heterostructures. Here, we report the emergence of a Bloch-type skyrmion state in the frustr…
In the conventional ferromagnetic systems, topological magnon bands and thermal Hall effect are due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). In principle, however, the DMI is either negligible or it is not allowed by symmetry in some quantum magnets. Therefore, we expect that topological magnon features will not be present in those systems. In addition, quantum magnets on the triangular-lattice are not expected to possess topological features as the DMI or spin-chirality cancels out due to equal and opposite contributions from adjacent triangles. Here, however, we predict that the isomo…
Time reversal protected three dimensional (3D) topological paramagnets are magnetic analogs of the celebrated 3D topological insulators. Such paramagnets have a bulk gap, no exotic bulk excitations, but non-trivial surface states protected by symmetry. We propose that frustrated spin-1 quantum magnets are a natural setting for realising such states in 3D. We describe a physical picture of the ground state wavefunction for such a spin-1 topological paramagnet in terms of loops of fluctuating Haldane chains with non-trivial linking phases. We illustrate some aspects of such loop gases with simpl…
We study the topology and geometry of a fermionic model on the honeycomb lattice with spin-dependent hopping which breaks the time-reversal and charge-conjugation symmetries but preserves their composition. We show that in such a case the Zak phases are topological invariants that characterize the semi-metallic state at half-filling and determine the edge state structure. As the strength of the spin-dependent hopping varies, the model shows several Lifshitz transitions corresponding to creation and merging of multiple Dirac points. We discuss the possible realization of this model in cold atom…
A number of topological nodes including Dirac, quadratic and triple band touching points as well as a pair of degenerate Dirac line nodes are found to emerge in the triplet plaquette excitations of the frustrated spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg honeycomb model when the ground state of the system lies in a spin-disordered plaquette-valence-bond-solid phase. A six-spin plaquette operator theory of this honeycomb model has been developed for this purpose by using the eigenstates of an isolated Heisenberg hexagonal plaquette. Spin-1/2 operators are thus expressed in the Fock spac…
In frustrated magnets the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction arising from spin-orbit coupling can induce a magnetic long-range order. Here, we report a theoretical prediction of thermal Hall effect in frustrated kagomé magnets such as KCr$_3$(OH)$_6$(SO4)$_2$ and KFe$_3$(OH)$_{6}$(SO$_{4}$)$_2$. The thermal Hall effects in these materials are induced by scalar spin chirality as opposed to DMI in previous studies. The scalar spin chirality originates from magnetic-field-induced chiral spin configuration due to non-coplanar spin textures, but in general it can be spontaneously developed as a macro…
We study the fractionally quantized $Z_N$ Berry phase, $γ_N=0, {2π\over N}, {4π\over N},\ldots, {2(N-1)π\over N}$, to characterize local $N$-mer spin structures at magnetization plateaux in spin-1/2 Heisenberg multimer ($N$-mer) models, i.e., highly frustrated $N$-leg ladder models, which are generalizations of an orthogonal dimer chain and have exact ground states in the strong multimer coupling region. We demonstrate that all $N$ types of Berry phases, which characterize magnetization-plateau phases, appear in a magnetic phase diagram when $N=2$ and $4$. We show that magnetization plateau wi…
Frustrated spin-$1/2$ XXZ zigzag chains relevant to Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ are revisited in the light of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. Using a density-matrix renormalization group method for infinite systems, we identify projective representations for four distinct time-reversal invariant SPT phases; two parity-symmetric dimer phases near the Heisenberg and XX limits and two parity-broken vector-chiral (VC) dimer phases in between. A small bond alternation in the nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange coupling induces a direct SPT transition between the two distinct VC dime…
We study and present the results of Berry connection for the topological states in quantum matter. The Berry connection plays a central role in the geometric phase and topological phenomenon in quantum many-body system. We present the necessary and sufficient conditions to characterize the topological nature of the system through the complex analysis. We also present the different topological aspects of the system in the momentum space.
Magnetic field induced multiple non-Dirac nodal-lines are found to emerge in the triplet dispersion bands of a frustrated spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic model on the CaVO lattice. Plaquette and bond operator formalisms have been employed to obtain the triplet plaquette and bond excitations for two different parameter regimes in the presence of nearest and next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interactions based on the plaquette-resonating-valence-bond and dimerized ground states, respectively. In the absence of magnetic field a pair of six-fold degenerate nodal-loops with distinct topological feature i…
We develop a method to characterize topological phase transitions for strongly correlated Hamiltonians defined on two-dimensional lattices based on the many-body Berry curvature. Our goal is to identify a class of quantum critical points between topologically nontrivial phases with fractionally quantized Hall (FQH) conductivity and topologically trivial gapped phases through the discontinuities of the many-body Berry curvature in the so-called flux Brillouin zone (fBZ), the latter being defined by imposing all possible twisted boundary conditions. For this purpose, we study the finite-size sig…
We consider a topologically non-trivial flat band structure in one spatial dimension in the presence of nearest and next nearest neighbor Hubbard interaction. The non-interacting band structure is characterized by a symmetry protected topologically quantized Berry phase. At certain fractional fillings, a gapped phase with a filling-dependent ground state degeneracy, and fractionally charged quasi-particles emerges. At filling 1/3, the ground states carry a fractional Berry phase in the momentum basis. These features at first glance suggest a certain analogy to the fractional quantum Hall scena…
We develop an exact map of all states and operators from 2D lattices of spins-$1/2$ into lattices of fermions and bosons with mutual semionic statistical interaction that goes beyond previous dualities of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories because it does not rely on imposing local conservation laws and captures the motion of ``charges'' and ``fluxes'' on equal footing. This map allows to explicitly compute the Berry phases for the transport of fluxes in a large class of symmetry enriched topologically ordered states with emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fields that includes chiral, non-chiral…
Topological magnon insulators in insulating Kagomé ferromagnets have been extensively studied in a series of papers. It has been established that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is the key ingredient to observe a nontrivial topological magnon with edge modes. However, insulating antiferromagnets on the Kagomé lattice are frustrated systems considered as a playground for studying quantum spin liquid physics. In these systems the DMI can induce a coplanar but noncollinear magnetic orders with a $\mathbf{q}=0$ propagating wavevector. We show that topological magnon bands are absent in thi…
We show that electrically and magnetically frustrated Josephson junction arrays (JJAs) realize topological order with a non-trivial ground state degeneracy on manifolds with non-trivial topology. The low-energy theory has the same gauge dynamics of the unfrustrated JJAs but for different, "fractional" degrees of freedom, a principle reminescent of Jain's composite electrons in the fractional quantum Hall effect.
Typical topological systems undergo a topological phase transition in the presence of a strong enough perturbation. In this paper, we propose an adjustable frustrated Toric code with a "topological line" at which no phase transition happens in the system and the topological order is robust against a non-linear perturbation of arbitrary strength. This important result is a consequence of the interplay between frustration and nonlinearity in our system, which also causes to the emergence of other interesting phenomena such as reentrant topological phases and survival of the topological order und…
The surface of a 3D topological insulator is a new type of two dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The exactly quantized magneto-optical or axionic response of a 3D topological insulator is a direct result of the Berry's phase protected spin-momentum locked states on its surface. (PRL Viewpoint http://physics.aps.org/node/3810).
We characterize several phases of gapped spin systems by local order parameters defined by quantized Berry phases. This characterization is topologically stable against any small perturbation as long as the energy gap remains finite. The models we pick up are $S=1,2$ dimerized Heisenberg chains and S=2 Heisenberg chains with uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy. Analytically we also evaluate the topological local order parameters for the generalized Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model. The relation between the present Berry phases and the fractionalization in the integer spin chains are di…
Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ is a well known 3D-topological insulators(TI) with a non-trivial Berry phase of $ \left(2n+1\right)π$ attributed to the topology of the band structure. The Berry phase shows non-topological deviations from $ \left(2n+1\right)π$ in presence of a perturbation that destroys time reversal symmetry and gives rise to a quantum system with massive Dirac fermions and finite band gap. Such a band gap opening is achieved on account of the exchange field of a ferromagnet or the intrinsic energy gap of a superconductor that influences the topological insulator surface states by virtue of …
The intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in metallic ferromagnets is shown to be controlled by Berry phases accumulated by adiabatic motion of quasiparticles on the Fermi surface, and is purely a Fermi-liquid property, not a ``bulk'' Fermi sea property like Landau diamagnetism, as has been previously supposed. Berry phases are a new topological ingredient that must be added to Landau Fermi-liquid theory in the presence of broken inversion or time-reversal symmetry.
An effective Hamiltonian describing the surface states of a toroidal topological insulator is obtained, and it is shown to support both bound-states and charged zero-modes. Actually, the spin connection induced by the toroidal curvature can be viewed as an position-dependent effective vector potential, which ultimately yields the zero-modes whose wave-functions harmonically oscillate around the toroidal surface. In addition, two distinct Berry phases are predicted to take place by the virtue of the toroidal topology.
The local Z_N quantized Berry phase for the SU(N) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin model is formulated. This quantity, which is a generalization of the local Z_2 Berry phase for SU(2) symmetry, has a direct correspondence to the number of singlet pairs spanning on a particular bond, and is effective as a tool to characterize and classify the various symmetry protected topological phases of one-dimensional SU(N) spin systems. We extend the path-integral quantum Monte Carlo method for the Z_2 Berry phase in order to calculate the ZN Berry phase numerically. We demonstrate our method by calculat…
We study geometrical responses of magnons driven by a temperature gradient in frustrated spin systems. While Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions are usually incorporated to obtain geometrically nontrivial magnon bands, here we investigate thermal Hall responses of magnons that do no rely on the DM interactions. Specifically, we focus on frustrated spin systems with sublattice degrees of freedom and show that a nonzero Berry curvature requires breaking of an effective $PT$ symmetry. According to this symmetry consideration, we study the $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_2^\prime$ Heisenberg models on a honeyc…
The topological classification of a series of frustration-induced spin-gap phases in the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic--antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbour interaction reported in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 82, 064703 (2013) is confirmed using two kinds of entanglement spectra defined by different divisions of the whole chain. For the numerical calculation, the iDMRG method is used. The results are consistent with the valence bond solid picture proposed in the previous paper.
In this paper we demonstrate the possibility of dissipationless spin transport in the chiral d-density wave state, by the sole application of a uniform Zeeman field gradient. The occurrence of these spontaneous spin currents is attributed to the parity (${\cal P}$) and time-reversal (${\cal T}$) violation induced by the $d_{xy}+id_{x^2-y^2}$ density wave order parameter. We calculate the spin Hall conductance and reveal its intimate relation to the Berry phase which is generated when the Zeeman field is applied adiabatically. Finally, we demonstrate that in the zero temperature and doping case…
Band geometry plays a substantial role in topological lattice models. The Berry curvature, which resembles the effect of magnetic field in reciprocal space, usually fluctuates throughout the Brillouin zone. Motivated by the analogy with Landau levels, constant Berry curvature has been suggested as an ideal condition for realizing fractional Chern insulators. Here we show that while the Berry curvature cannot be made constant in a topological two-band model, lattice models with three or more degrees of freedom per unit cell can support exactly constant Berry curvature. However, contrary to the …
We study the fate of spin-1/2 spiral-ordered two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets that are disordered by quantum fluctuations. A crucial role is played by the topological point defects of the spiral phase, which are known to have a Z2 character. Previous works established that a nontrivial quantum spin-liquid phase results when the spiral is disordered without proliferating the Z2 vortices. Here, we show that when the spiral is disordered by proliferating and condensing these vortices, valence-bond solid ordering occurs due to quantum Berry phase effects. We develop a general theory for th…
We report on the observation of a large topological Hall effect (THE) over a wide temperature region in a geometrically frustrated Fe3Sn2 magnet with a kagome-bilayer structure. We found that the magnitude of the THE resistivity increases with temperature and reaches -0.875 μΩ.cm at 380 K. Moreover, the critical magnetic fields with the change of THE are consistent with the magnetic structure transformation, which indicates that the real-space fictitious magnetic field is proportional to the formation of magnetic skyrmions in Fe3Sn2. The results strongly suggest that the large THE originates f…
Within the phase fluctuation model for the pseudogap state of cuprate superconductors we identify a novel statistical "Berry phase" interaction between the nodal quasiparticles and fluctuating vortices. The effective action describing this model assumes the form of an anisotropic Euclidean quantum electrodynamics in (2+1) dimensions (QED_3) and naturally generates the marginal Fermi liquid behavior for its fermionic excitations. The doping axis in the x-T phase diagram emerges as a quantum critical line which regulates low energy fermiology. We examine the merits of our theory in light of avai…
The phase of quantum magneto-oscillations is often associated with the Berry phase and is widely used to argue in favor of topological nontriviality of the system (Berry phase $2πn+π$). Nevertheless, the experimentally determined value may deviate from $2πn+π$ arbitrarily, therefore more care should be made analyzing the phase of magneto-oscillations to distinguish trivial systems from nontrivial. In this paper we suggest two simple mechanisms dramatically affecting the experimentally observed value of the phase in three-dimensional topological insulators: (i) magnetic field dependence of the …
The picture of how a gap closes in a semiconductor has been radically transformed by topological concepts. Instead of the gap closing and immediately re-opening, topological arguments predict that, in the absence of inversion symmetry, a metallic phase protected by Weyl nodes persists over a finite interval of the tuning parameter (e.g. pressure $P$) . The gap re-appears when the Weyl nodes mutually annihilate. We report evidence that Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te exhibits this topological metallic phase. Using pressure to tune the gap, we have tracked the nucleation of a Fermi surface droplet that rapid…
We show that the topological central charge of a topological phase can be directly accessed from the ground-state wavefunctions for a system on a surface as a Berry curvature produced by adiabatic variation of the metric on the surface, at least up to addition of another topological invariant that arises in some cases. For trial wavefunctions that are given by conformal blocks (chiral correlation functions) in a conformal field theory (CFT), we carry out this calculation analytically, using the hypothesis of generalized screening. The topological central charge is found to be that of the under…
We investigate the quantum dynamics of the transverse field Ising model on the triangular lattice through large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations and stochastic analytic continuation. At weak transverse field, we capture for the first time the excitations related to topological quantum strings, which exhibits continuum features described by XY chain along the strings and those in accord with "Luttinger string liquid" in the perpendicular direction. The continuum features can be well understood from the perspective of topological strings. Furthermore, we identify the contribution of strings…
We formulate the dynamics of local order parameters by extending the recently developed adiabatic spinwave theory involving the Berry curvature, and derive a formula showing explicitly the role of the Berry phase in determining the spectral form of the low-lying collective modes. For antiferromagnetic spin chains, the Berry phase becomes a topological invariant known as the Chern number. Our theory predicts the existence of the Haldane gap for a topologically trivial ground state, and a linear dispersion of low-lying excitations for a non-trivial ground state.

The spin-1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour (NNN) interaction is investigated. The ground state is the Haldane phase for weak NNN interaction, and is the ferromagnetic phase for weak antiferromagnetic interaction. We find a series of topologically distinct spin-gap phases with various magnitudes of edge spins for strong NNN interaction. The phase boundaries between these phases are determined on the basis of the DMRG calculation with additional spins that compensate the edge spins. It is found that each of the exact soluti…

For the Haldane phase, the magnetic field usually tends to break the symmetry and drives the system into a topologically trivial phase. Here, we report a novel reentrance of the Haldane phase at zero temperature in the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on sawtooth chain. A partial Haldane phase is induced by the magnetic field, which is the combination of the Haldane state in one sublattice and a ferromagnetically ordered state in the other sublattice. Such a partial topological order is a result of the zero-temperature entropy due to quantum fluctuations caused by geometrical frustrat…
Starting with general semiclassical equations of motion for electrons in the presence of electric and magnetic fields, we extend the Chambers formula to include in addition to a magnetic field, time-dependent electric fields and bands with Berry curvature. We thereby compute the conductivity tensor $σ_{αβ}(B,ω)$ in the presence of magnetic field for bands in two (2D) and three (3D) dimensions with Berry curvature. We focus then on several applications to magnetotransport for metals with Fermi surface topological transitions in 2D. In particular, we consider a rectangular lattice and a model re…
A (single flavor) quadratic band crossing in two dimensions is known to have a generic instability towards a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) ground state for infinitesimal repulsive interactions. Here we introduce a generalization of a quadratic band crossing which is protected only by rotational symmetry. By focusing on the representative case of a parabolic and flat band touching, which also allows for a straightforward lattice realization, the interaction induced nematic phase is found generally to compete successfully with the QAH insulator, and to become the dominant instability in certain p…
