The numbers e_p(k,n) defined as min(nu_p(S(k,j)j!): j >= n) appear frequently in algebraic topology. Here S(k,j) is the Stirling number of the second kind, and nu_p(-) the exponent of p. The author and Sun proved that if L is sufficiently large, then e_p((p-1)p^L + n -1, n) >= n-1+nu_p([n/p]!). In this paper, we determine the set of integers n for which equality holds in this inequality when p=2 and 3. The condition is roughly that, in the base-p expansion of n, the sum of two consecutive digits must always be less than p.
The partial Stirling numbers T_n(k) used here are defined as the sum over odd values of i of (n choose i) i^k. Their 2-exponents nu(T_n(k)) are important in algebraic topology. We provide many specific results, applying to all values of n, stating that, for all k in a certain congruence class mod 2^t, nu(T_n(k)) = nu(k - k0) + c0, where k0 is a 2-adic integer and c0 a positive integer. Our analysis involves several new general results for nu(sum (n choose 2i+1) i^j), the proofs of which involve a new family of polynomials. Following Clarke, we interpret T_n as a function on the 2-adic integers…
Let $n,k,a$ and $c$ be positive integers and $b$ be a nonnegative integer. Let $ν_2(k)$ and $s_2(k)$ be the 2-adic valuation of $k$ and the sum of binary digits of $k$, respectively. Let $S(n,k)$ be the Stirling number of the second kind. It is shown that $ν_2(S(c2^n,b2^{n+1}+a))\geq s_2(a)-1,$ where $0<a<2^{n+1}$ and $2\nmid c$. Furthermore, one gets that $ν_2(S(c2^{n},(c-1)2^{n}+a))=s_2(a)-1$, where $n\geq 2$, $1\leq a\leq 2^n$ and $2\nmid c$. Finally, it is proved that if $3\leq k\leq 2^n$ and $k$ is not a power of 2 minus 1, then $ν_2(S(a2^{n},k)-S(b2^{n},k))=n+ν_2(a-b)-\lceil\log_2k\rceil…
For positive integers m and n, denote S(m,n) as the associated Stirling number of the second kind and let z be a complex variable. In this paper, we introduce the Stirling functions S(m,n,z) which satisfy S(m,n,z) = S(m,n) for any z which lies in the zero set of a certain polynomial P(m,n,z). For all real z, the solutions of S(m,n,z) = S(m,n) are computed and all real roots of the polynomial P(m,n,z) are shown to be simple. Applying the properties of the Stirling functions, we investigate the divisibility of the numbers S(m,n) and then generalize Wilson's Theorem.
Certain elliptic divisibility sequences are shown to contain only finitely many prime power terms. In certain circumstances, the methods show only finitely many terms have length below a given bound.
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over the rationals and let N be its conductor. Assume N is prime. In this paper we give numerical evidence that suggests some conjectures on the 2-divisibility of certain sums of Heenger points on E of discriminant D dividing 4N. One of these conjectures suggests a possible link between the parity of the eigenvalue a_A(2) and the parity of the Shafarevich-Tate group of certain elliptic curves A of square conductor.
In this paper, we prove the following result conjectured by Z.-W. Sun: $$ (2n-1){3n\choose n}| \sum_{k=0}^{n}{6k\choose 3k}{3k\choose k}{6(n-k)\choose 3(n-k)}{3(n-k)\choose n-k}. $$ by showing that the left-hand side divides each summand on the right-hand side.
Let $P$ be a non-torsion point on the elliptic curve $E_{a}: y^{2}=x^{3}+ax$. We show that if $a$ is fourth-power-free and either $n>2$ is even or $n>1$ is odd with $x(P)<0$ or $x(P)$ a perfect square, then the $n$-th element of the elliptic divisibility sequence generated by $P$ always has a primitive divisor.
We construct some families of quadratic fields whose class numbers are divisible by $3.$ The main tools used are a trinomial introduced by Kishi and a parametrization of Kishi and Miyake of a family of quadratic fields whose class numbers are divisible by $3.$ At the end we compute class number of these fields for some small values and verify our results.
We study a canonical basis for spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms of weights 12, 16, 18, 20, 22, and 26 on the full modular group. We prove a relation between the Fourier coefficients of modular forms in this canonical basis and a generalized Ramanujan tau-function, and use this to prove that these Fourier coefficients are often highly divisible by 2.
Andrews' $(k, i)$-singular overpartition function $\overline{C}_{k, i}(n)$ counts the number of overpartitions of $n$ in which no part is divisible by $k$ and only parts $\equiv \pm i\pmod{k}$ may be overlined. In recent times, divisibility of $\overline{C}_{3\ell, \ell}(n)$, $\overline{C}_{4\ell, \ell}(n)$ and $\overline{C}_{6\ell, \ell}(n)$ by $2$ and $3$ are studied for certain values of $\ell$. In this article, we study divisibility of $\overline{C}_{3\ell, \ell}(n)$, $\overline{C}_{4\ell, \ell}(n)$ and $\overline{C}_{6\ell, \ell}(n)$ by primes $p\geq 5$. For all positive integer $\ell$ an…
Recently, the $λ$-analogues of $r$-Stirling numbers of the first kind were studied by Kim-Kim. The aim of this paper is to introduce the $λ$-analogues of $r$-Stirling numbers of the second kind and to investigate some properties, recurrence relations and certain identities on those numbers. We also introduce the $λ$-analogues of Whitney-type $r$-Stirling numbers of the second and derive similar results to the case of the $λ$-analogues of r-Stirling numbers of the second kind. In addition, we consider the $λ$-analogues of Dowling polynomials and deduce a Dobinski-like formula.
In this paper, we derive some identities and recurrence relations for the degenerate Stirling numbers of the first kind and of the second kind which are degenerate versions of the ordinary Stirling numbers of the first kind and of the second kind. They are deduced from the normal oderings of degenerate integral powers of the number operator and their inversions, certain relations of boson operators and from the recurrence relations of the Stirling numbers themselves. Here we note that, while the normal ordering of an integral power of the number operator is expressed with the help of the Stirl…
We study a general type of series and relate special cases of it to Stirling series, infinite series discussed by Choi and Hoffman, and also to special values of the Arakawa-Kaneko zeta function, complementing and generalizing earlier results. Moreover, we survey properties of certain truncated multiple zeta and zeta star values, pointing out their relation to finite sums of harmonic numbers. We also discuss the duality result of Hoffman, relating binomial sums and truncated multiple zeta star values.
The author has constructed multiple analogues of several families of combinatorial numbers in a recent article, including the bracket symbol, and the Stirling numbers of the first and second kind. In the present paper, a multiple analogue of another sequence, the Lah numbers, is developed, and certain associated identities and significant properties of all these sequences are constructed.
Associated to each random variable $Y$ having a finite moment generating function, we introduce a different generalization of the Stirling numbers of the second kind. Some characterizations and specific examples of such generalized numbers are provided. As far as their applications are concerned, attention is focused in extending in various ways the classical formula for sums of powers on arithmetic progressions. Illustrations involving rising factorials, Bell polynomials, polylogarithms, and a certain class of Appell polynomials, in connection with appropriate random variables $Y$ in each cas…
In this paper, we prove two conjectures of Z.-W. Sun: $$2n\binom{2n}n\big|\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(3k+1)\binom{2k}k^3{16}^{n-1-k}\ \mbox{for}\ \mbox{all}\ n=2,3,\cdots,$$ and $$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\frac{3k+1}{16^k}\binom{2k}{k}^3\equiv p+2\left(\frac{-1}{p}\right)p^3E_{p-3}\pmod{p^4},$$ where $p>3$ is a prime and $E_0,E_1,E_2,\cdots$ are Euler numbers.
For several Hodge-type Shimura varieties of good reduction in characteristic $p$, we show that the cone of weights of automorphic forms is encoded by the stack of $G$-zips of Pink-Wedhorn-Ziegler. This establishes several instances of a general conjecture formulated in previous papers by the authors. Furthermore, we prove in these cases that any mod $p$ automorphic form whose weight lies in a specific region of the weight space is divisible by a partial Hasse invariant. This generalizes to other Shimura varieties previous results of Diamond--Kassaei on Hilbert modular forms.
For a positive integer $\ell$, let $b_{\ell}(n)$ denote the number of $\ell$-regular partitions of a nonnegative integer $n$. Motivated by some recent conjectures of Keith and Zanello, we establish infinite families of congruences modulo $2$ for $b_3(n)$ and $b_{21}(n)$. We prove a specific case of a conjecture of Keith and Zanello on self-similarities of $b_3(n)$ modulo $2$. We next prove that the series $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}b_9(2n+1)q^n$ is lacunary modulo arbitrary powers of $2$. We also prove that the series $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}b_9(4n)q^n$ is lacunary modulo $2$.
We obtain asymptotic formulae for the number of primes $p\le x$ for which the reduction modulo $p$ of the elliptic curve $$ \E_{a,b} : Y^2 = X^3 + aX + b $$ satisfies certain ``natural'' properties, on average over integers $a$ and $b$ with $|a|\le A$ and $|b| \le B$, where $A$ and $B$ are small relative to $x$. Specifically, we investigate behavior with respect to the Sato--Tate conjecture, cyclicity, and divisibility of the number of points by a fixed integer $m$.
Suppose $j_N(τ)$ and $j_N^{*}(τ)$ are the Hauptmoduln of the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$ and the Fricke group $Γ^{*}_0(N)$, respectively. In [7], the authors predicted that, like Klein's $j$-function, the Fourier coefficients of $j_N(τ)$ and $j_{N}^{*}(τ)$ in some arithmetic progression are both even and odd with density $\frac{1}{2}$. In this article, we can find some arithmetic progression of $n$ where the Fourier coefficients of $j_6(τ)$ (resp. $j_6^{*}(τ)$ and $j_{10}(τ)$) are almost always even. Furthermore, using Hecke eigenforms and Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, we obtain infini…
In this paper, two new series for the logarithm of the $Γ$-function are presented and studied. Their polygamma analogs are also obtained and discussed. These series involve the Stirling numbers of the first kind and have the property to contain only rational coefficients for certain arguments related to $π^{-1}$. In particular, for any value of the form $\lnΓ(\frac{1}{2}n\pmαπ^{-1})$ and $Ψ_k(\frac{1}{2}n\pmαπ^{-1})$, where $Ψ_k$ stands for the $k$th polygamma function, $α$ is positive rational greater than $\frac{1}{6}π$, $n$ is integer and $k$ is non-negative integer, these series have ratio…
Using Kummer's Theorem, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Narayana number to be divisible by a given prime. We use this to derive certain properties of the Narayana triangle.
The class number divisibility problem for number fields is one of the classical problems in algebraic number theory, which originated from Gauss' class number conjectures. The relation between the points on an elliptic curve and class number divisibility of a number field has been explored through the works of various mathematicians. Here, we explicitly construct an unramified abelian extension of a bi-quadratic field generated from points of a certain type of elliptic curve. Moreover, showing the $2$-Selmer rank of the said elliptic curve as $1$, we also construct an infinite family of bi-qua…
In this note we revisit classic work of Soundararajan on class groups of imaginary quadratic fields. Let $A,B,g \ge 3$ be positive integers such that $\gcd(A,B)$ is square-free. We refine Soundararajan's result to show that if $4 \nmid g$ or if $A$ and $B$ satisfy certain conditions, then the number of negative square-free $D \equiv A \pmod{B}$ down to $-X$ such that the ideal class group of $\mathbb{Q} (\sqrt{D})$ contains an element of order $g$ is bounded below by $X^{\frac{1}{2} + ε(g) - ε}$, where the exponent is the same as in Soundararajan's theorem. Combining this with a theorem of Fre…
Let $k$ be a number field and let ${\mathcal{A}}$ be a ${\rm GL}_2$-type variety defined over $k$ of dimension $d$. We show that for every prime number $p$ satisfying certain conditions (see Theorem 2), if the local-global divisibility principle by a power of $p$ does not hold for ${\mathcal{A}}$ over $k$, then there exists a cyclic extension $\widetilde{k}$ of $k$ of degree bounded by a constant depending on $d$ such that ${\mathcal{A}}$ is $\widetilde{k}$-isogenous to a ${\rm GL}_2$-type variety defined over $\widetilde{k}$ that admits a $\widetilde{k}$-rational point of order $p$. Moreover,…
Z.-W. Sun introduced three kinds of numbers: \begin{align*}S_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n\choose k}^2{2k\choose k}(2k+1),\qquad s_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n\choose k}^2{2k\choose k}\frac{1}{2k-1}, \end{align*} and $S_n^{+}=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n\choose k}^2{2k\choose k}(2k+1)^2$. In this paper we mainly prove that \begin{align*} 4\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}kS_k\equiv \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}s_k\equiv \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}S_k^{+}\equiv 0\pmod{n^2}\quad\text{for $n\geqslant 1$}, \end{align*} by establishing some binomial coefficient identities, such as \begin{align*} 4\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}kS_k=n^2\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{1}{k+1}{2k\choose k}(6k{n-1\c…
In this paper, we derive some identities involving special numbers and moments of random variables by using the generating functions of the moments of certain random variables. Here the related special numbers are Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds, degenerate Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds, derangement numbers, higher-order Bernoulli numbers and Bernoulli numbers of the second kind.
Let $k\geq 3$ and $n\geq 3$ be odd integers, and let $m\geq 0$ be any integer. For a prime number $\ell$, we prove that the class number of the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{\ell^{2m}-2k^n})$ is either divisible by $n$ or by a specific divisor of $n$. Applying this result, we construct an infinite family of certain tuples of imaginary quadratic fields of the form $$\left(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{4d+1}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2d+4}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2d+16}), \cdots, \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2d+4^t}) \right)$$ with $d\in \mathbb{Z}$ and $1\leq 4^t\leq 2|d|…
Let $n, k$ and $a$ be positive integers. The Stirling numbers of the first kind, denoted by $s(n,k)$, count the number of permutations of $n$ elements with $k$ disjoint cycles. Let $p$ be a prime. In recent years, Lengyel, Komatsu and Young, Leonetti and Sanna, Adelberg, Hong and Qiu made some progress in the study of the $p$-adic valuations of $s(n,k)$. In this paper, by using Washington's congruence on the generalized harmonic number and the $n$-th Bernoulli number $B_n$ and the properties of $m$-th Stirling numbers of the first kind obtained recently by the authors, we arrive at an exact ex…
The Erdös-Moser equation is a Diophantine equation proposed more than 60 years ago which remains unresolved to this day. In this paper, we consider the problem in terms of divisibility of power sums and in terms of certain Egyptian fraction equations. As a consequence, we show that solutions must satisfy strong divisibility properties and a restrictive Egyptian fraction equation. Our studies lead us to results on the Bernoulli numbers and allow us to motivate Moser's original approach to the problem.
(Dieudonné and) Dwork's lemma gives a necessary and sufficient condition for an exponential of a formal power series $S(z)$ with coefficients in $Q_p$ to have coefficients in $Z_p$. We establish theorems on the $p$-adic valuation of the coefficients of the exponential of $S(z)$, assuming weaker conditions on the coefficients of $S(z)$ than in Dwork's lemma. As applications, we provide several results concerning lower bounds on the $p$-adic valuation of the number of permutation representations of finitely generated groups. In particular, we give fairly tight lower bounds in the case of an arbi…
The aim of this paper is to construct generating functions for some families of special finite sums with the aid of the Newton-Mercator series, hypergeometric series, and $p$-adic integral (the Volkenborn integral). By using these generating functions, their functional equations, and their partial derivative equations, many novel computational formulas involving the special finite sums of (inverse) binomial coefficients, the Bernoulli type polynomials and numbers, Euler polynomials and numbers, the Stirling numbers, the (alternating) harmonic numbers, the Leibnitz polynomials and others. Among…
For certain subgroups of $M_{24}$, we give vertex operator algebraic module constructions whose associated trace functions are meromorphic Jacobi forms. These meromorphic Jacobi forms are canonically associated to the mock modular forms of Mathieu moonshine. The construction is related to the Conway moonshine module and employs a technique introduced by Anagiannis--Cheng--Harrison. With this construction we are able to give concrete vertex algebraic realizations of certain cuspidal Hecke eigenforms of weight two. In particular, we give explicit realizations of trace functions whose integraliti…
We give a number theoretic proof of the integrality of certain BPS invariants of knots. The formulas for these numbers are sums involving binomial coefficients and the Möbius function. We also prove a conjecture about further divisibility properties of the invariants.
The main purpose of this paper is to present various identities and computation formulas for certain classes of Apostol-type numbers and polynomials. The results of this paper contain not only the $λ$-Apostol-Daehee numbers and polynomials, but also Simsek numbers and polynomials, the Stirling numbers of the first kind, the Daehee numbers, and the Chu-Vandermonde identity. Furthermore, we derive an infinite series representation for the $λ$-Apostol-Daehee polynomials. By using functional equations containing the generating functions for the Cauchy numbers and the Riemann integrals of the gener…
Given a prime number $p$, the study of divisibility properties of a sequence $c(n)$ has two contending approaches: $p$-adic valuations and superconcongruences. The former searches for the highest power of $p$ dividing $c(n)$, for each $n$; while the latter (essentially) focuses on the maximal powers $r$ and $t$ such that $c(p^rn)$ is congruent to $c(p^{r-1}n)$ modulo $p^t$. This is called supercongruence. In this note, we prove modest supercongruences for certain sequences that have come to be known as the Almkvist-Zudilin numbers and two other naturally related ones.
Certain triples of power series, considered by I. Macdonald, give a natural framework for many combinatorial and number theoretic sequences, such as the Stirling, Bernoulli and harmonic numbers and partitions of different kinds. The power series in such a triple are closely linked by identities coming from the theory of symmetric functions. We extend the work of Z-H. Sun, who developed similar ideas, and Macdonald, revealing more of the structure of these triples. De Moivre polynomials play a key role in this study.
