We investigate the future evolution of the dark energy universe in modified gravities including $F(R)$ gravity, string-inspired scalar-Gauss-Bonnet and modified Gauss-Bonnet ones, and ideal fluid with the inhomogeneous equation of state (EoS). Modified Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) dynamics for all these theories may be presented in universal form by using the effective ideal fluid with an inhomogeneous EoS without specifying its explicit form. We construct several examples of the modified gravity which produces accelerating cosmologies ending at the finite-time future singularity of all four known types by applying the reconstruction program. Some scenarios to resolve the finite-time future singularity are presented. Among these scenarios, the most natural one is related with additional modification of the gravitational action in the early universe. In addition, late-time cosmology in the non-minimal Maxwell-Einstein theory is considered. We investigate the forms of the non-minimal gravitational coupling which generates the finite-time future singularities and the general conditions for this coupling in order that the finite-time future singularities cannot emerge. Furthermore, it is shown that the non-minimal gravitational coupling can remove the finite-time future singularities or make the singularity stronger (or weaker) in modified gravity.
We hereby show that the Kasner spacetime turns out to be singularity-free in Einstein's conformal gravity in vacuum or in presence of matter. Such a statement is based on the regularity of the curvature invariants and on the geodesic completion of the spacetime when it is probed by massive, massless, and conformally coupled particles. As a universal feature of the regular metric, nothing can reach the singularity located in t=0 in a finite amount of proper time (for massive particles and conformally coupled particles) or for finite values of the affine parameter (for massless particles).
It is shown that phantom scalar models can be mapped into a mathematically equivalent, modified $F(R)$ gravity, which turns out to be complex, in general. Only for even scalar potentials is the ensuing modified gravity real. It is also demonstrated that, even in this case, modified gravity becomes complex at the region where the original phantom dark energy theory develops a Big Rip singularity. A number of explicit examples are presented which show that these two theories are not completely equivalent, from the physical viewpoint. This basically owes to the fact that the physical metric in bo…
In this note we generalize entropy based on the quantum mechanical probability density distribution. Motivated by J. Munkhammar and the uncertainty of entropy we modified the origin wave function of the test particle. The corrected one acting on the quantum particle is subject to the uncertainty principle. Considering the uncertain relation, the corrected probability of the particle for measurement on holographic screen has been proposed. We also derivate the speed of information transfer described by wave function. Our quantum approach to entropy stress the information in a physical system is…
The possibility of asymptotic safety scenario (asymptotic freedom) for quantum gravity has been pointed out in many contexts recently. From this point of view, we discuss some applications of cutoff identification to the black hole. If we consider the condition that the Newton coupling becomes weaker as approaching the origin, the curvature singularity still remains.
Using the fluid representation, we formulate the conditions for the appearance of all four types finite-time future singularity in modified gravity in accelerating FRW universe. It stressed that number of standard quintessence/phantom DE theories (including scalar, fluid, DBI ones, etc) brings the accelerating cosmology to future singularity precisely in the same way as singular modified gravity DE. The viable non-singular modified gravity unifying the early-time inflation with late-time acceleration is considered. It is shown that adding such non-singular theory to another realistic singular …
We review the several models of the dark energy, which may generate the accelerated expansion of the present universe. We also discuss the the Big Rip singularity, which may occur when the equation of the state parameter w is less than -1. We show that the quantum correction would be very important near the singularity.
We study all four types of finite-time future singularities emerging in late-time accelerating (effective quintessence/phantom) era from $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$-gravity, where $R$ and $G$ are the Ricci scalar and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, respectively. As an explicit example of $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$-gravity, we also investigate modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity, so-called $F(G)$-gravity. In particular, we reconstruct the $F(G)$-gravity and $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$-gravity models where accelerating cosmologies realizing the finite-time future singularities emerge. Furthermore, we discuss a possible way to cure…
We review finite-time future singularities in modified gravity. We reconstruct an explicit model of modified gravity realizing a crossing of the phantom divide and show that the Big Rip singularity appears in the modified gravitational theory. It is also demonstrated that the (finite-time) Big Rip singularity in the modified gravity is transformed into the infinite-time singularity in the corresponding scalar field theory obtained through the conformal transformation. Furthermore, we study several models of modified gravity which produce accelerating cosmologies ending at the finite-time futur…
The cosmological constant induced by quantum fluctuation of the graviton on a given background is considered as a tool for building a spectrum of different geometries. In particular, we apply the method to the Schwarzschild background with positive and negative mass parameter. In this way, we put on the same level of comparison the related naked singularity (-M) and the positive mass wormhole. We discuss how to extract information in the context of a f(R) theory. We use the Wheeler-De Witt equation as a basic equation to perform such an analysis regarded as a Sturm-Liouville problem . The appl…
We verify the existence of Generalized Sudden Future Singularities (GSFS) in quintessence models with scalar field potential of the form $V(ϕ)\sim \vert ϕ\vert^n$ where $0<n<1$ and in the presence of a perfect fluid, both numerically and analytically, using a proper generalized expansion ansatz for the scale factor and the scalar field close to the singularity. This generalized ansatz includes linear and quadratic terms, which dominate close to the singularity and cannot be ignored when estimating the Hubble parameter and the scalar field energy density; as a result, they are important for ana…
The fundamental problem of the occurrence/removal of finite-time future singularity in the universe evolution for coupled dark energy (DE) is addressed. It is demonstrated the existence of the (instable or local minimum) de Sitter space solution which may cure the Type II or Type IV future singularity for DE coupled with DM as the result of tuning the initial conditions. In case of phantom DE, the corresponding coupling may help to resolve the coincidence problem but not the Big Rip (Type I) singularity issue. We show that modified gravity of special form or inhomogeneous DE fluid may offer th…
The classical Raychaudhuri equation predicts the formation of conjugate points for a congruence of geodesics, in a finite proper time. This in conjunction with the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorems predicts the incompleteness of geodesics and thereby the singular nature of practically all spacetimes. We compute the generic corrections to the Raychaudhuri equation in the interior of a Schwarzschild black hole, arising from modifications to the algebra inspired by the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) theories. Then we study four specific models of GUP, compute their effective dynamics …
We investigate which Jordan frame $F(R)$ gravity can describe a Type IV singular bouncing cosmological evolution, with special emphasis given near the point at which the Type IV singularity occurs. The cosmological bounce is chosen in such a way so that the bouncing point coincides exactly with Type IV singularity point. The stability of the resulting $F(R)$ gravity is examined and in addition, we study the Einstein frame scalar-tensor theory counterpart of the resulting Jordan frame $F(R)$ gravity. Also, by assuming that the Jordan frame metric is chosen in such a way so that, when conformall…
We reconstruct an explicit model of modified gravity in which a crossing of the phantom divide can be realized. It is shown that the (finite-time) Big Rip singularity appears in the model of modified gravity (i.e., in the so-called Jordan frame), whereas that in the corresponding scalar field theory obtained through the conformal transformation (i.e., in the so-called Einstein frame) the singularity becomes the infinite-time one. Furthermore, we investigate the relations between the scalar field theories with realizing a crossing of the phantom divide and the corresponding modified gravitation…
Motivated by the endeavors of Li Xiang and You-Gen Shen on naked singularities, we investigate the validity of the cosmic censorship conjecture in the context of generalized uncertainty principle. In particular, upon considering both linear and quadratic terms of momentum in the uncertainty principle, we first compute the entropy of a massless charged black hole in de Sitter spacetime at a given modified temperature. Then, we compute the corresponding modified cosmological radius and express the black hole electric charge in terms of this modified cosmological radius and, thus, in terms of the…
We provide a detailed quantitative description of singular inflation. Its close analogy with finite-time future singularity which is associated to dark energy era is described. Calling and classifying the singularities of such inflation as finite-time cosmological singularities we investigate their occurrence, with special emphasis on the Type IV singularity. The study is performed in the context of a general non-canonical scalar-tensor theory. In addition, the impact of finite time singularities on the slow-roll parameters is also investigated. Particularly, we study three cases, in which the…
D=11 Supergravity near a space-like singularity admits a cosmological billiard description based on the hyperbolic Kac-Moody group E10. The quantization of this system via the supersymmetry constraint is shown to lead to wavefunctions involving automorphic (Maass wave) forms under the modular group W^+(E10)=PSL(2,O) with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the billiard domain. A general inequality for the Laplace eigenvalues of these automorphic forms implies that the wave function of the universe is generically complex and always tends to zero when approaching the initial singularity. We discuss…
A class of Modified Gravity Models, consisting of inverse powers of linear combination of quadratic curvature invariants, is studied in the full parameter space. We find that singularity-free cosmological solutions, interpolating between an almost-Friedmann universe at Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and an accelerating universe today, exist only in a restricted parameter space. Furthermore, for all parameters of the models, there is an unstable scalar mode of the gravitational field. Therefore we conclude that this class of Modified Gravity Models is not viable.
In four space-time dimensions, there exists a special infinite-parameter family of chiral modified gravity theories. All these theories describe just two propagating polarizations of the graviton. General Relativity with an arbitrary cosmological constant is the only parity-invariant member of this family. We review how these modified gravity theories arise within the framework of pure-connection formulation. We introduce a new convenient parametrisation of this family of theories by using certain set of auxiliary fields. Modifications of General Relativity can be arranged so as to become impo…
Hořava gravity has been proposed as a renormalizable, higher-derivative gravity without ghost problems, by considering different scaling dimensions for space and time. In the non-relativistic higher-derivative generalization of Einstein gravity, the meaning and physical properties of black hole and membrane space-times are quite different from the conventional ones. Here, we study the singularity and horizon structures of such geometries in IR-modified Hořava gravity, where the so-called "detailed balance" condition is softly broken in IR. We classify all the viable static solutions without na…
In this work we investigate the thermodynamical properties and modified dynamics of black hole solutions in the semiclassical regime of affine coherent state quantization. Using the weak correspondence principle we build a semiclassical effective action that we use to study thermodynamics in the canonical ensemble and to compare classical analytical solutions with the corresponding semiclassical ones. We determine a strong compatibility of these affine black holes with the thermodynamical properties of the classical counterparts, with only minor restrictions on the free parameters of the model…
Recently, it was shown that modified mimetic gravity, with a $f(\squareϕ)$ term, results in a singularity-free model of gravity, for both cosmological and black hole spacetimes [1, 2]. In this work, we analyze this model further and show that, since the function $f$ was tuned to vanish rapidly for small values of the argument, the non-singular bounce relies heavily on a subtle branch changing mechanism for the multi-valued function $f$. Furthermore, this mechanism has interesting implications for the proposed link between this model and loop quantum cosmology.
An alternative to the Big Bang cosmologies is obtained by the Big Bounce cosmologies. In this paper, we study a bounce cosmology with a Type IV singularity occurring at the bouncing point, in the context of $F(R)$ modified gravity. We investigate the evolution of the Hubble radius and we examine the issue of primordial cosmological perturbations in detail. As we demonstrate, for the singular bounce, the primordial perturbations originating from the cosmological era near the bounce, do not produce a scale invariant spectrum and also the short wavelength modes, after these exit the horizon, do n…
In the recently proposed cosmological constant (CC) filter mechanism based on modified gravity in the Palatini formalism, gravity in the radiation, matter and late-time de Sitter eras is insensitive to energy sources with the equation of state -1. This implies that finite vacuum energy shifts from phase transitions are filtered out, too. In this work we investigate the CC filter model at very early times. We find that the initial big bang singularity is replaced by a cosmic bounce, where the matter energy density and the curvature are finite. In a certain case this finiteness can be observed a…
We study the future evolution of quintessence/phantom dominated epoch in modified $F(R)$-gravity which unifies the early-time inflation with late-time acceleration and which is consistent with observational tests. Using the reconstruction technique it is demonstrated that there are models where any known (Big Rip, II, III or IV Type) singularity may classically occur. From another side, in Einstein frame (scalar-tensor description) only IV Type singularity occurs. Near the singularity the classical description breaks up, it is demonstrated that quantum effects act against the singularity and m…
By neglecting the effects of self-force and radiation, we investigate the possibility of destroying the Kerr-MOG black hole through the point particle absorption process. Using the instability of event horizon and equation of particle motion, we get the upper and lower energy bounds allowed for a matter particle to produce the naked singularity. We find that the energy gap always exists between the upper and lower energy bounds for both extremal and near-extremal black holes, which means some tailored particles can actually lead to the violation of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture. Howeve…
Scenario of a bouncing universe is one of the most active area of research to arrive at singularity free cosmological models. Different proposals have been suggested to avoid the so called 'big bang' singularity through the quantum aspect of gravity which is yet to have a proper understanding. In this work, on the contrary, we consider three different approaches, each of which goes beyond General Relativity but remain within the domain of classical cosmological scenario, to address this problem. The hallmark of all these approaches is that the origin of the bouncing mechanism is somewhat natur…
The Kehagias-Sfetsos asymptotically flat black hole and naked singularity solutions of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity are investigated both in the weak-field and strong-field regimes. In the weak-field limit the gravitational field generated by the Kehagias-Sfetsos spherically symmetric solution is weaker then in the case of the Schwarzschild black hole of general relativity. In the strong-field regime naked singularities with $ω_{0} \ll 1 $ display an unusual distance dependence: gravity becomes weaker when approaching the singularity. The stability of circular orbits is also analyzed. While in the …
Motivated by Horava-Lifshitz gravity theory, we propose and investigate two kinds of modified gravity theories, the f(R) kind and the K-essence kind, in the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism. The f(R) kind includes one ultraviolet (UV) term and one infrared (IR) term together with the Einstein-Hilbert action. We find that these two terms naturally present the ultraviolet and infrared modifications to the Friedmann equation. The UV and IR modifications can avoid the past Big-Bang singularity and the future Big-Rip singularity, respectively. Furthermore, the IR modification can naturally acc…
The future finite-time singularities emerging in alternative gravity dark energy models are classified and studied in Jordan and Einstein frames. It is shown that such singularity may occur even in flat spacetime for the specific choice of the effective potential. The conditions for the avoidance of finite-time singularities are presented and discussed. The problem is reduced to the study of a scalar field evolving on an effective potential by using the conformal transformations. Some viable modified gravity models are analyzed in detail and the way to cure singularity is considered by introdu…
We study a modified two-dimensional dilaton gravity theory which is exactly solvable in the semiclassical approximation including back-reaction. The vacuum solutions of this modified theory are asymptotically flat static space-times. Infalling matter forms a black hole if its energy is above a certain threshold. The black hole singularity is initially hidden behind a timelike apparent horizon. As the black hole evaporates by emitting Hawking radiation, the singularity meets the shrinking horizon in finite retarded time to become naked. A natural boundary condition exists at the naked singulari…
In the theories of generalized modified gravity, the acceleration equation is generally fourth order. So it is hard to analyze the evolution of the Universe. In this paper, we present a class of generalized modified gravity theories which have the acceleration equation of second order derivative. Then both the cosmic evolution and the weak-field limit of the theories are easily investigated. We find that not only the Big-bang singularity problem but also the current cosmic acceleration problem could be easily dealt with.
Interest in cosmological singularities has remarkably grown in recent times, particularly on future singularities with the discovery of late-time acceleration of the universe and dark energy. While such explorations have previously been done in various modified gravity and quantum gravitationally inspired cosmologies (besides standard general relativistic cosmology), no such an endeavour has been taken up till now in the realms of renormalization group approaches to cosmology and we have hence took up on this journey. In this work, we consider the formation of cosmological singularities in an …
Analytic properties of physical quantities in the cosmic fluid such as energy density ρ(t) and Hubble parameter H(t) are investigated near the future singularity (Big Rip). Both 4D and 5D cosmologies are considered (the Randall-Sundrum II model in the 5D case), and the fluid is assumed to possess a bulk viscosity ζ. We consider both Einstein gravity and modified gravity, where in the latter case the Lagrangian contains a term R^αwith αa constant. If ζis proportional to the power (2α-1) of the scalar expansion, the fluid can pass from the quintessence region into the phantom region as a consequ…
We consider different scenarios of the evolution of the universe, where the singularities or some non-analyticities in the geometry of the spacetime are present, trying to answer the following question: is it possible to conserve some kind of notion of particle corresponding to a chosen quantum field present in the universe when the latter approaches the singularity? We study scalar fields with different types of Lagrangians, writing down the second-order differential equations for the linear perturbations of these fields in the vicinity of a singularity. If both independent solutions are regu…
This paper has two parts. First we review the description of local bulk operators in Lorentzian AdS in terms of non-local operators in the boundary CFT. We discuss how bulk locality arises in pure AdS backgrounds and how it is modified at finite N. Next we present some new results on BTZ black holes: local operators can be defined inside the horizon of a finite N BTZ black hole, in a way that suggests the BTZ geometry describes an average over black hole microstates, but with finite N effects resolving the singularity.
The distinction between modified gravity and quintessence or dynamical dark energy is difficult. Many models of modified gravity are equivalent to models of coupled quintessence by virtue of variable transformations. This makes an observational differentiation between modified gravity and dark energy very hard. For example, the additional scalar degree of freedom in $f(R)$-gravity or non-local gravity can be interpreted as the cosmon of quintessence. Nevertheless, modified gravity can shed light on questions of interpretation, naturalness and simplicity. We present a simple model where gravity…
We show that the most general scalar-tensor theory of gravity up to four derivatives in $3+1$ dimensions is well-posed in a modified version of the CCZ4 formulation of the Einstein equations in singularity-avoiding coordinates. We demonstrate the robustness of our new formulation in practise by studying equal mass black hole binary mergers for different values of the coupling constants. Although our analysis of well-posedness is restricted to cases in which the couplings are small, we find that in simulations we are able to push the couplings to larger values, so that a certain weak coupling c…
Although there is general agreement that a removal of classical gravitational singularities is not only a crucial conceptual test of any approach to quantum gravity but also a prerequisite for any fundamental theory, the precise criteria for non-singular behavior are often unclear or controversial. Often, only special types of singularities such as the curvature singularities found in isotropic cosmological models are discussed and it is far from clear what this implies for the very general singularities that arise according to the singularity theorems of general relativity. In these lectures …
Alternative scenarios to the Big Bang singularity have been subject of intense research for several decades by now. Most popular in this sense have been frameworks were such singularity is replaced by a bounce around some minimal cosmological volume or by some early quantum phase. This latter scenario was devised a long time ago and referred as an "emergent universe" (in the sense that our universe emerged from a constant volume quantum phase). We show here that within an improved framework of canonical quantum gravity (the so called Quantum Reduced Loop Gravity) the Friedmann equations for co…
We consider a modified form of gravity in which the action contains a power alpha of the scalar curvature. It is shown how the presence of a bulk viscosity in a spatially flat universe may drive the cosmic fluid into the phantom region (w<-1) and thus into a Big Rip singularity, even if it lies in the quintessence region (w>-1) in the non-viscous case. The condition for this to occur is that the bulk viscosity contains the power (2 alpha-1) of the scalar expansion. Two specific examples are discussed in detail. The present paper is a generalization of the recent investigation dealing with barr…
We derive a Cardy-Verlinde-like formula which relates the entropy of the closed FRW universe to its energy, and Casimir energy, for a multicomponent coupled fluid. The generalized fluid obeys an inhomogeneous equation of state. A viscous dark fluid is included, and we include also modified gravity using its fluid representation. It is demonstrated how such an expression reduces to the standard Cardy-Verlinde formula corresponding to the 2d CFT entropy only in some special cases. The dynamical entropy bound for a closed FRW universe with dark components is obtained. The universality of the dyna…
When recent observational evidence and the GR+FRW+CDM model are combined we obtain the result that the Universe is accelerating, where the acceleration is due to some not-yet-understood "dark sector". There has been a considerable number of theoretical models constructed in an attempt to provide an "understanding" of the dark sector: dark energy and modified gravity theories. The proliferation of modified gravity and dark energy models has brought to light the need to construct a "generic" way to parameterize the dark sector. We will discuss our new way of approaching this problem. We write do…
The objective of this thesis is to present a viable extension of general relativity free from cosmological singularities. A viable cosmology, in this sense, is one that is free from ghosts, tachyons or exotic matter, while staying true to the theoretical foundations of General Relativity such as general covariance, as well as observed phenomenon such as the accelerated expansion of the universe and inflationary behaviour at later times. To this end, an infinite derivative extension of relativity is introduced, with the gravitational action derived and the non-linear field equations calculated,…
In this paper, we investigate the effects of a new version of the generalized uncertainty principle (modified GUP) on the dynamics of the Universe. As the modified GUP will modify the relation between the entropy and area of the apparent horizon, it will also deform the Friedmann equations within Jacobson's approach. We explicitly find these deformed Friedmann equations governing the modified GUP-corrected dynamics of such a Universe. It is shown that the modified GUP-deformed Jacobson's approach implies an upper bound for the density of such a Universe. The Big Bang singularity can therefore …
The reconstruction scheme is developed for modified $f(R)$ gravity with realistic matter (dark matter, baryons, radiation). Two versions of such theory are constructed: the first one describes the sequence of radiation and matter domination, decceleration-acceleration transition and acceleration era and the second one is reconstructed from exact Lambda-CDM cosmology. The asymptotic behaviour of first model at late times coincides with the theory containing positive and negative powers of curvature while second model approaches to General Relativity without singularity at zero curvature.
We propose the reconstruction of $F(R)$ gravity in such a way that corresponding theory admits cyclic and ekpyrotic universe solutions. The number of explicit examples of such $F(R)$ model is found. The comparison with the reconstructed scalar-tensor theory is made. We also present $F(R)$ gravity which provides the little rip evolution and gives the realistic gravitational alternative for $Λ$CDM cosmology. The time for little rip dissolution of bound structures in such theory is estimated. We demonstrate that transformed little rip $F(R)$ solution becomes qualitatively different cosmological s…
Cyclic universes with bouncing solutions are candidates for solving the big bang initial singularity problem. Here we seek bouncing solutions in a modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory, of the type $R+f(G)$, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, $G$ is the Gauss-Bonnet term, and $f$ some function of it. In finding such a bouncing solution we resort to a technique that reduces the order of the differential equations of the $R+f(G)$ theory to second order equations. As general relativity is a theory whose equations are of second order, this order reduction technique enables one to find solutions which a…
We study how a cosmological bounce with a Type IV singularity at the bouncing point, can be generated by a classical vacuum $F(G)$ gravity. We focus our investigation on the behavior of the vacuum $F(G)$ theory near the Type IV singular bouncing point and also we address the stability of the resulting solution, by treating the equations of motion as a dynamical system. In addition, we investigate how the scalar perturbations of the background metric evolve, emphasizing to cosmological times near the Type IV singular bouncing point. Finally, we also investigate which mimetic vacuum $F(G)$ gravi…
The theory of f(R)-gravity is one of the theories of modified Einstein gravity. The vacuum solution, on the other hand, of the field equation is the solution for black hole geometry. We establish here an asymptotically flat rotating black hole solution in an f(R)-gravity. This essentially leads to the modified solution to the Kerr black hole. This solution exhibits the change in fundamental properties of the black hole and its geometry. It particularly shows that radii of marginally stable and bound orbits and black hole event horizon increase compared to those in Einstein gravity, depending o…
