In the optical conductivity of four different manganites with commensurate charge order (CO), strong peaks appear in the meV range below the ordering temperature T_{CO}. They are similar to those reported for one-dimensional charge density waves (CDW) and are assigned to pinned phasons. The peaks and their overtones allow one to obtain, for La{1-n/8}Ca{n/8}$MnO{3} with n = 5, 6, the electron-phonon coupling, the effective mass of the CO system, and its contribution to the dielectric constant. These results support a description of the CO in La-Ca manganites in terms of moderately weak-coupling and of the CDW theory.
We present a theory of the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to study electronic excitations in orbital ordered manganites. The charge and orbital excitations of the Mn 3d electron are caused by the Coulomb interactions in the intermediate scattering state. The scattering cross section is formulated by the Liouville operator method where the local and itinerant natures of the excitations are taken into account on an equal footing. As a result, the cross section is expressed by the charge and orbital correlation functions associated with local corrections. The RIXS spectra are calculat…
We study theoretically the collective orbital excitation named orbital wave in the orbital ordered manganites. The dispersion relation of the orbital wave is affected by the static spin structure through the coupling between spin and orbital degrees of freedom. As a probe to detect the dispersion relation, we propose two possible methods by utilizing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. The transition probability of the orbital wave scattering is formulated, and the momentum and polarization dependences of the structure factor are calculated in several types of the orbital and spin structures. …
In this communication the enhancement of low temperature magnetoresistance in polycrystalline La1-xCaxMnO3 manganites is discussed. It is shown that so-called grain boundary effects seem to be the simplest and natural explanation of this phenomenon.
Recent experiments showed that the robust charge-ordering in manganites can be weakened by reducing the grain size down to nanoscale. Weak ferromagnetism was evidenced in both nanoparticles and nanowires of charge-ordered manganites. To explain these observations, a phenomenological model based on surface phase separation is proposed. The relaxation of superexchange interaction on the surface layer allows formation of a ferromagnetic shell, whose thickness increases with decreasing grain size. Possible exchange bias and softening of the ferromagnetic transition in nanosized charge-ordered mang…
Charge-ordered rare earth manganites Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3, La0.25Nd0.25Ca0.5MnO3, Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 are found to exhibit dielectric constant anomalies around the charge-ordering or the magnetic transition temperatures. Magnetic fields have a marked effect on the dielectric properties, indicating the presence of coupling between the magnetic and electrical order parameters. The observation of magnetoferroelectricity in these manganites is in accord with the recent theoretical predictions of Khomskii and coworkers.
An effective one-band Hamiltonian for colossal-magnetoresistance (CMR) manganites is constructed and the spin excitations are determined. Fitting the experimental data by the derived spin-wave dispersion gives an e_g -electron hopping amplitude of about 0.2 eV in agreement with LDA band calculations.
THz time-domain spectroscopy was used to directly probe the low-energy (0.5--5 meV) electrodynamics of the charge-ordered manganite Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$. We revealed the existence of a finite peak structure around 2--3 meV well below the charge gap $\sim300$ meV. In analogy to the low-energy optical properties of the well-studied low-dimensional materials, we attributed this observed structure to the collective excitation mode arising from the charge-density-wave condensate. This finding provides the importance role of the quasi-one dimensional nature of the charge and orbital ordering …
The order parameters of the magnetic, charge and structural orders at half-doped manganites are identified. A corresponding Landau theory of the phase transitions is formulated. Many structural and thermodynamical behaviors are accounted for and clarified within the framework. In particular, the theory provides a unified picture for the scenario of the phase transitions and their nature with respect to the variation of the tolerance factor of the manganites. It also accounts for the origin of the incommensurate nature of the orbital order and its subsequently accompanying antiferromagnetic ord…
The so-called stripe phase of the manganites is an important example of the complex behaviour of metal oxides, and has long been interpreted as the localisation of charge at atomic sites. Here, we demonstrate via resistance measurements on La_{0.50}Ca_{0.50}MnO_3 that this state is in fact a prototypical charge density wave (CDW) which undergoes collective transport. Dramatic resistance hysteresis effects and broadband noise properties are observed, both of which are typical of sliding CDW systems. Moreover, the high levels of disorder typical of manganites result in behaviour similar to that …
In this work the charge transport properties of charge ordered (CO) La1-xCaxMnO3 (LCMO) (x= 0.55, 0.67) epitaxial thin films and polycrystals are discussed following the recent controversy of localised electron states vs. weakly or de- localised charge density wave (CDW) states in CO manganites. The transport properties were investigated by current vs. voltage, direct current resistivity vs. temperature, local activation energy vs. temperature, magnetoresistance and admittance spectroscopy measurements, which all indicated a localised electronic structure in the single CO phase. Delocalised ch…
Impurity effects on the stability of a ferromagnetic metallic state in a bicritical-state manganite, (La0.7Pr0.3)0.65Ca0.35MnO3, on the verge of metal-insulator transition have been investigated by substituting a variety of transition-metal atoms for Mn ones. Among them, Fe doping exhibits the exceptional ability to dramatically decrease the ferromagnetic transition temperature. Systematic studies on the magnetotransport properties and x-ray diffraction for the Fe-doped crystals have revealed that charge-orbital ordering evolves down to low temperatures, which strongly suppresses the ferromagn…
In the mixed-valence manganites, a near-infrared laser typically melts the orbital and spin order simultaneously, corresponding to the photoinduced $d^{1}d^{0}$ $\xrightarrow{}$ $d^{0}d^{1}$ excitations in the Mott-Hubbard bands of manganese. Here, we use ultrafast methods -- both femtosecond resonant x-ray diffraction and optical reflectivity -- to demonstrate that the orbital response in the layered manganite Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{1+x}$MnO$_{4}$ ($\it{x}$ = 2/3) does not follow this scheme. At the photoexcitation saturation fluence, the orbital order is only diminished by a few percent in the trans…
The colossal electroresistance in manganites is a concomitant of the electric field induced insulator-to-metal phase transition. A phenomenological phase transition model is proposed to study this electric field induced collapse of charge-ordered phase. The hysteresis of the phase transition is well explained using the effective medium approximation. The volume fraction of metallic region at the metal-to-insulator transition point is estimated as 30%. In addition, it is found that the critical electric field to melt the charge-ordered phase will decrease with the applied magnetic field.
The charge order of CE phase in half-doped manganites is studied, based on an argument that the charge-ordering is caused by the Jahn-Teller distortions of MnO6 octahedra rather than Coulomb repulsion between electrons. The uantitative calculation on the ferromagnetic zigzag chain as the basic structure unit of CE phase within the framework of two-orbital double exchange model including Jahn-Teller effect is performed, and it is shown that the charge-disproportionation of Mn cations in the charge-ordered CE phase is less than 13%. In addition, we predict the negative charge-disproportionation …
We present a detailed magnetic study of the Pr1/3Ca2/3MnO3 manganite, where we observe the presence of small ferromagnetic (FM) domains (diameter ~ 10A) immersed within the charge-ordered antiferromagnetic (AFM) host. Due to the interaction of the FM nanodroplets with a disordered AFM shell, the low-temperature magnetization loops present exchange bias (EB) under cooling in an applied magnetic field. Our analysis of the cooling field dependence of the EB yields an antiferromagnetic interface exchange coupling comparable to the bulk exchange constant of the AFM phase. We also observe training e…
We investigate magnetic excitations in half-doped colossal magnetoresistance manganites. In particular, we focus on spin excitations in the CE phase originally proposed by Goodenough (Phys. Rev. 100, 564 (1955)). Using a localized spin model we calculated magnons for 3D-perovskite compounds such as La$_{1-x}$M$_x$MnO$_3$, where M=Ca,Sr,Ba, and for their 2D-laminar counterparts. We compared them with predictions for the spin excitations corresponding to other phases proposed. For the laminar half-doped manganite La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$, for which magnon measurements by inelastic neutron sca…
We employ time-resolved resonant x-ray diffraction to study the melting of charge order and the associated insulator-metal transition in the doped manganite Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ after resonant excitation of a high-frequency infrared-active lattice mode. We find that the charge order reduces promptly and highly nonlinearly as function of excitation fluence. Density functional theory calculations suggest that direct anharmonic coupling between the excited lattice mode and the electronic structure drive these dynamics, highlighting a new avenue of nonlinear phonon control.
The one-orbital model for manganites with cooperative phonons and superexchange coupling $J_{\rm AF}$ has been investigated via large-scale Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Results for two-orbitals are also briefly discussed. Focusing on electronic density $n$=0.75, a regime of competition between ferromagnetic (FM) metallic and charge-ordered (CO) insulating states was identified. In the vicinity of the associated bicritical point, colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effects were observed. The CMR is associated with the development of short-distance correlations among polarons, above the spin order…
This paper reports on peculiar metamagnetic transitions which take place in antiferromagnetic, charge and orbitally ordered (AFCOO) manganites. At very low temperatures, the virgin magnetization curves of some of these compounds exhibit several, sharp steps giving rise to a staircase-like shape. This staircase effect is shown to be sensitive to various experimental parameters. Several potential interpretations of the staircase effect are discussed in relation to this set of results. A martensitic-like scenario, involving a leading role of the structural distortions associated to the collapse o…
Charge-ordered manganites of composition $\rm Pr_{1-x}(Ca_{1-y}Sr_{y})_{x}MnO_3$ exhibit persistent photoconductivity upon exposure to x-rays. This is not always accompanied by a significant increase in the {\it number} of conduction electrons as predicted by conventional models of persistent photoconductivity. An analysis of the x-ray diffraction patterns and current-voltage characteristics shows that x-ray illumination results in a microscopically phase separated state in which charge-ordered insulating regions provide barriers against charge transport between metallic clusters. The dominant…
In order to reveal many-body interactions in the three-dimensional (3D) perovskite manganite, we have performed an $in$ $situ$ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) and investigated the behaviors of quasiparticles. We observe quasiparticle peaks around the Fermi momentum, both in the electron and the hole bands, and clear kinks throughout the hole Fermi surface in the ARPES band dispersion. The isotropic behavior sharply contrasts to the strong anisotropic quasiparticle excitation observed in layered manganites. These results suggest that polar…
Most previous investigations have shown that the surface of a ferromagnetic material may have antiferromagnetic tendencies. However, experimentally the opposite effect has been recently observed: ferromagnetism appears in some nano-sized manganites with a composition such that the antiferromagnetic charge-ordered CE state is observed in the bulk. A possible origin is the development of ferromagnetic correlations at the surface of these small systems. To clarify these puzzling experimental observations, we have studied the two-orbital double-exchange model near half-doping n=0.5, using open bou…
We report the observation of temperature dependent electronic excitations in various manganites utilizing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Mn K-edge. Excitations were observed between 1.5 and 16 eV with temperature dependence found as high as 10 eV. The change in spectral weight between 1.5 and 5 eV was found to be related to the magnetic order and independent of the conductivity. On the basis of LDA+U and Wannier function calculations, this dependence is associated with intersite d-d excitations. Finally, the connection between the RIXS cross-section and the loss function is …
In the present work we analyze the influence of the charge-ordering on the magnetocaloric effect of Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ manganites. The results for the samples with $x<$0.30 present the usual ferromagnetic behavior, peaking at the Curie temperature T$_C$. In contrast, for the samples above the onset concentration for the charge-ordering ($x\sim$0.30), an anomalous magnetic entropy change was observed below the charge-ordering temperature $T_{CO}$, persisting for lower temperatures. This effect is associated to a positive contribution to the magnetic entropy change due to charge-ordering, w…
In order to study the magnetic excitation behaviors in colossal magnetoresistance manganites, a magnon-phonon interacting system is investigated. Sudden broadening of magnon linewidth is obtained when a magnon branch crosses over an optical phonon branch. Onset of the broadening is approximately determined by the magnon density of states. Anomalous magnon damping at the brillouine zone boundary observed in low Curie temperature manganites is explained.
The spin dynamic of the metallic A-type antiferromagnetic manganites is studied. An effective nearest-neighbour Heisenberg spin wave dispersion is derived from the double exchange model taking into account the superexchange interaction between the core spins. The result of inelastic neutron scattering experiment on ${Nd}_{0.45}{Sr}_{0.55}{Mn} {O}_{3}$ is qualitatively reproduced. Comparing theory with experimental data two main parameters of the model: nearest-neighbour electron transfer amplitude and superexchange coupling between the core spins are estimated.
Transport characterizations of epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films in the thickness range 5-40 nm and 25-410 K temperature interval have been accurately collected. We show that taking into account polaronic effects allows to achieve the best ever fitting of the transport curves in the whole temperature range. The Current Carriers Density Collapse picture accurately accounts for the properties variation across the metal-insulator-transition. The electron-phonon coupling parameter estimations are in a good agreement with theoretical predictions. The results promote a clear and straightforward qu…
A unified theory is developed to explain various types of electronic collective behaviors in doped manganites R$_{1-x}$X$_x$MnO$_3$ (R = La, Pr,Nd etc. and X = Ca, Sr, Ba etc.). Starting from a realistic electronic model, we derive an effective Hamiltonianis by ultilizing the projection perturbation techniques and develop a spin-charge-orbital coherent state theory, in which the Jahn-Teller effect and the orbital degeneracy of e$_g$ electrons in Mn ions are taken into account. Physically, the experimentally observed charge ordering state and electronic phase separation are two macroscopic quan…
We show that minimal disturbance to the robust charge ordered Pr(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3) by 2.5% Al substitution on Mn-site drives the system towards ferromagnetic ground state. The history-dependent coexisting phases observed are explained as an outcome of a hindered first order transition with glass like arrest of kinetics resulting in irreversibility. Consistent with a simple phase diagram having ferromagnetic ground state, it is experimentally shown that these coexisting phases are far from the equilibrium.
Giant oxygen isotope effects observed in colossal magnetoresistance manganites are investigated by employing the combined model of the double exchange and interacting lattice polaron mechanism. We have shown that the isotope effects on $ T_C$ in the metallic phase and $ T_{CO}$ in the charge ordered phase of manganites can be explained well in terms of the double exchange and polaron narrowing factors with reasonable physical parameters.
High temperature (T) studies of La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} show that charge and phonon transport is significantly suppressed in a narrow doping region of x~1/2 and in a wide T range up to 900 K, which accompanies anomalous broadening of x-ray Bragg peaks. Contrarily, ferromagnetic (FM) correlation above Curie T is sharply enhanced at x~3/8. All these observations indicate the presence of short-range charge ordering (CO) correlation at high T, possibly in the form of a FM "zigzag", a small segment of the CE-type CO state. The decoupling and coupling of the FM zigzags for x~3/8 and 1/2, respectively,…
There have been recent reports of charge ordering around $x=0.5$ in the bilayer manganites. At $x=0.5$, there appears to be a coexistence region of layered A-type antiferromagnetc and charge order. There are also reports of orbital order in this region without any Jahn-Teller effect. Based on physical grounds, this region is investigated from a model that incorporates the two $e_g$ orbitals at each Mn site and a near-neighbour Coulomb repulsion. It is shown that there indeed is both charge and orbital order close to the half-doped region coincident with a layered magnetic structure. Although t…
An effective Hamiltonian is derived in the case of the strong Hund coupling and on-site Coulomb interaction by means of a projective perturbation approach. A physical mechanism for charge ordering in half-doped manganites (R_{0.5}X_{0.5}MnO_3) is proposed. The virtual process of electron hopping results in antiferromagnetic superexchange and a repulsive interaction, which may drive electrons to form a Wigner lattice. The phase diagram of the ground state of the model is presented at half doping. In the case of formation of Wigner lattice, we prove that spins of electrons are aligned ferromagne…
Femtosecond (fs)-resolved simultaneous measurements of charge and spin dynamics reveal the coexistence of two different quasi-particle excitations in colossal magneto-resistive (CMR) manganites, with {\em fs} and {\em ps} relaxation times respectively. Their populations reverse size above a {\em photoexcitation-intensity-threshold} coinciding with a "sudden" antiferro-to-ferromagnetic switching during $<$100 fs laser pulses. We present evidence that fast, metallic, mobile quasi--electrons dressed by {\em quantum spin fluctuations} coexist with slow, localized, polaronic charge carriers in non-…
We report a modulation of the in-plane magnetotransport in artificial manganite superlattice (SL) [(NdMnO3)n /(SrMnO3)n /(LaMnO3)n]m by varying the layer thickness n while keeping the total thickness of the structure constant. Charge transport in these heterostructures is confined to the interfaces and occurs via variable range hopping (VRH). Upon increasing n, the interfacial separation rises, leading to a suppression of the electrostatic screening between carriers of neighboring interfaces and the opening of a Coulomb gap at the Fermi level (EF). The high-field magnetoresistance (MR) is univ…
Low as well as high-temperature electron and x-ray diffraction studies have been carried out on a rare-earth free B-site disordered electron-doped manganite SrMn0.875.Mo0.125O3-δ in the temperature range of 83K to 637K. These studies reveal the occurrence of strong charge ordering (CO) at room temperature in a pseudo tetragonally distorted perovskite phase with space-group Pmmm. Non integral modulation vector of 8.95 times along [-110] indicates a charge density wave type modulation. The CO phase with basic perovskite structure Pmmm transforms to a charge disorder cubic phase through a first o…
Theoretical and computational results are presented clarifying the role of long-ranged strain interactions in determining the charge and orbital ordering in colossal magnetoresistance manganites. The strain energy contribution is found to be of order 20-30 meV/Mn and in particular stabilizes the anomalous 'zig-zag chain' order observed in many half-doped manganites.
Neutron scattering results are presented for spin-wave excitations of three ferromagnetic metallic $A_{1-x}A^{\prime}_{x}$MnO$_3$ manganites (where $A$ and $A^\prime$ are rare- and alkaline-earth ions), which when combined with previous work elucidate systematics of the interactions as a function of carrier concentration $x$, on-site disorder, and strength of the lattice distortion. The long wavelength spin dynamics show only a very weak dependence across the series. The ratio of fourth to first neighbor exchange ($J_4/J_1$) that controls the zone boundary magnon softening changes systematical…
Whenever a symmetry in the ground state of a system is broken, topological defects will exist. These defects are essential for understanding phase transitions in low dimensional systems[1]. Excitingly in some unique condensed matter systems the defects are also the low energy electric charge excitations. This is the case of skyrmions in quantum Hall ferromagnets[2] and solitons in polymers[3]. Orbital order present in several transitions metal compounds[4-6] could give rise to topological defects. Here we argue that the topological defects in orbital ordered half doped manganites are orbital s…
Modulation of charge carrier dynamics and hence electrical conductivity of solids by photoexcitation has been a rich field of research with numerous applications. Similarly, electric and magnetic field assisted enhancement of conductivity are of fundamental importance and technological use. Hole doped manganites of the type (A$_{1-x}$B$_{x})$MnO$_{3}$, where A and B are rare and alkaline earth metals respectively have the distinction of showing all three effects. Here we establish the complementarity of the electric, magnetic and photon fields in driving an insulator-metal transition in epitax…
Structural features of the charge/orbital ordering (CO/OO) in single-layered manganites Pr1-xCa1+xMnO4 have been investigated systematically by transmission electron microscopy. Analyses of electron diffraction patterns as well as dark-field images have revealed that the CO/OO shows a striking asymmetric behavior as the hole doping x deviates from x = 0.5. The modulation wavenumber linearly decreases with increasing x in the over-hole-doped (x > 0.5) crystals, while much less dependent on x in the under-hole-doped (x < 0.5) crystals. A temperature-induced incommensurate-commensurate crossover …
Starting from the assumption that ferromagnetically correlated regions exist in manganites even in the absence of long-range magnetic order, we construct a model of charge transfer due to the spin-dependent tunnelling of charge carriers between such regions. This model allows us to analyze the temperature and magnetic field dependence of resistivity, magnetoresistance, and magnetic susceptibility of phase-separated manganites in the temperature range corresponding to non-metallic behavior. The comparison of theoretical and experimental results reveals the main characteristics of the phase-sepa…
In the colossal magnetoresistance manganites polarons have been proposed as the charge carrier state which localizes across the metal-insulator transition. The character of the polarons is still under debate. We present an assessment of measurements which identify polarons in the metallic state of La{2/3}Sr{1/3}MnO{3} (LSMO) and La{2/3}Ca{1/3}MnO{3} (LCMO) thin films. We focus on optical spectroscopy in these films which displays a pronounced resonance in the mid-infrared. The temperature dependent resonance has been previously assigned to polaron excitations. These polaronic resonances are qu…
Magnetodielectric materials are characterized by a strong coupling of magnetic and dielectric properties and in rare cases simultaneously exhibit both, magnetic and polar order. Among other multiferroics, TbMnO3 and GdMnO3 reveal a strong magneto-dielectric (ME) coupling and as a consequence fundamentally new spin excitations exist: Electro-active magnons, or electromagnons, i. e. spin waves which can be excited by ac electric fields. Here we show that these excitations appear in the phase with an incommensurate (IC) magnetic structure of the manganese spins. In external magnetic fields this I…
The competition of charge, orbital, and ferromagnetic interactions in layered manganites is investigated by magneto-Raman scattering spectroscopy. We find that the colossal magnetoresistance effect in the layered compounds results from the interplay of the orbital and ferromagnetic double-exchange correlations. Inelastic scattering by charge-order fluctuations dominates the quasiparticle dynamics in the ferromagnetic-metal state. The scattering is suppressed at low frequencies, consistent with the opening of a charge-density wave pseudogap.
A-site ordered manganites LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O5 and LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O6 are investigated by x-ray full-profile diffraction and Moessbauer spectroscopy. Powder samples were oriented with preferred orientation of platy crystallites in the plane of sample surface. March-Dollase function of preferred orientation was employed in analysing both the Rietveld patterns and the Mossbauer spectra. Combined effects of preffered orientation and vibrational anisotropy on the line area asymmetry of Mossbauer doublet are analysed. Constructive and destructive interference between the effects of texture and vibrat…
The role of lattice distortion in the charge, orbital and spin ordering in half doped manganites has been investigated. For fixed magnetic ordering, we show that the cooperative lattice distortion stabilize the experimentally observed ordering even when the strong on-site electronic correlation is taken into account. Furthermore, without invoking the magnetic interactions, the cooperative lattice distortion alone may lead to the correct charge and orbital ordering including the charge stacking effect, and the magnetic ordering can be the consequence of such a charge and orbital ordering. We pr…
The rare-earth ions (RE = Eu, Dy Ho, Tm, Y) substituted charge-ordered antiferromagnetic manganites, Pr0.45RE0.05Ca0.5MnO3, were studied for the magnetic and the transport properties in the presence of external magnetic-fields of up to 14 Tesla. Regardless of the intrinsic magnetic property of RE ions, all the compounds exhibit successive step-like metamagnetic transitions at low temperatures, which are strongly correlated to their electronic transitions. At any fixed temperature in two different temperature-regimes, we observed contrary effects of the magnetic-field cycling on the resistivity…
Magnon self energy due to spin-charge coupling is calculated for the correlated ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model using a diagrammatic expansion scheme. Systematically incorporating correlation effects in the form of self-energy and vertex corrections, the expansion scheme explicitly preserves the continuous spin rotation symmetry and hence the Goldstone mode. Due to a near cancellation of the correlation-induced quantum correction terms at intermediate coupling and optimal band filling relevant for ferromagnetic manganites, the renormalized magnon energies for the correlated FKLM are nearly i…
Using time-of-flight and triple-axis inelastic neutron spectroscopy, we determine spin wave excitations throughout the Brillouin zone for ferromagnetic manganites La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ ($x=0.25,0.3$) in their low temperature metallic states. While spin wave excitations in the long wavelength limit (spin stiffness $D$) have similar values for both compounds, the excitations near the Brillouin zone boundary of La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ are considerable softened in all symmetry directions compared to that of La$_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$. A Heisenberg model with the nearest neighbor and the f…
In layered manganites with orbital and charge orderings, the degeneracy of the Mn $4p$ orbitals as well as the $3d$ ones is lifted by the effects of the $4p$ bands and the local Coulomb interactions. We formulate the atomic scattering factor for the resonant x-ray scattering in the memory function method by taking into account these effects on an equal footing. It is shown that the polarization dependences of the scattering intensities at the orbital and charge superlattice reflections observed in LaSr$_{2}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ are caused by the local and itinerant characters of $4p$ electrons, respect…
Correlation-induced spin-charge and spin-orbital coupling effects on spin dynamics in ferromagnetic manganites are calculated with realistic parameters in order to provide a quantitative comparison with experimental results for spin stiffness, magnon dispersion, magnon damping, anomalous zone-boundary magnon softening, and Curie temperature. The role of orbital degeneracy, orbital ordering, and orbital correlations on spin dynamics in different doping regimes is highlighted.
In a manganite film without quenched disorder, we show texturing in the form of insulating and metallic stripes above and below Curie temperature (Tc), respectively, by high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). The formation of these stripes involves competing orbital and charge orders, and are an outcome of overlapping electron wave-functions mediated by long-range lattice strain. Contrary to popular perception, electronically homogeneous stripe phase underlines the efficacy of the lattice strain in bringing about charge density modulation and in impeding the cross…
We introduce a general model for understanding the effect of quenched disorder on charge ordering in half-doped Manganese- and Cobalt-Oxides with different crystal structures. Current experimental results (Table-1) are discussed in light of the global phase diagram of the model (Fig. 2).
A mechanism for charge-ordered ferromagnetic phase in manganites is proposed. The mechanism is based on the double exchange in the presence of diagonal disorder. It is modeled by a combination of the Ising double-exchange and the Falicov-Kimball model. Within the dynamical mean-field theory the charge and spin correlation function are explicitely calculated. It is shown that the system exhibits two successive phase transitions. The first one is the ferromagnetic phase transition, and the second one is a charge ordering. As a result a charge-ordered ferromagnetic phase is stabilized at low temp…
We report a high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of the bilayer manganites La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ with $x = 0.36$ and $0.5$. The momentum dependence along the crystallographic $(110)$ direction for energy losses $1\,\rm{eV} \leq ΔE \leq 15\,\rm{eV}$ has been measured in detail with the data analysis focusing on the energy loss region $1\,\rm{eV} \leq ΔE \leq 5\,\rm{eV}$, which includes a strong peak located at $ΔE \approx 2\,\rm{eV}$. We observe a clear dispersion of up to $0.5\,\rm{eV}$ in the measured $\textbf{q}$ range, which is direct evidence of the…
The role of the orbital degrees of freedom is studied theoretically for the spin dynamics of $R_{1-x}A_x$MnO$_3$. Based on the meanfield solution, an RPA calculation has been done and it is found that the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-type orbital is essential for the double-exchange (DE) interactions, i.e., the DE is basically two-dimensional interaction. Based on this results compared with experiments, we propose that the orbital wavefunction is $d_{x^2-y^2}$-type locally even in the metallic ferromagnetic state, which fluctuate quantum mechanically. Well agreement of the estimation with experiments suggest…
We observe a disappearance of electron-hole asymmetry in hole and electron doped manganites of composition Pr(1-x)Ca(x)MnO3 (x=0.36, 0.64), as reflected in the g-parameter values. The bulk property of opposite g-shifts in room temperature seems to have disappeared in nanoparticles. We analyze the results in the light of ferromagnetic fluctuations and melting of charge order in nanoparticles.
