Sm{0.5-x}Pr{x}Sr{0.5}MnO{3} exhibits variety of ground states as x is varied from 0 to 0.5. At an intermediate doping of x = 0.3 a charge-ordered CE type antiferromagnetic insulating (AFI) ground state is seen. The transition to this ground state is from a paramagnetic insulating (PMI) phase through a ferromagnetic metallic phase (FMM). Local structures in PMI and AFI phases of x = 0.3 sample have been investigated using Pr K-edge and Sm K-edge Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS). It can be seen that the tilting and rotation of the MnO6 octahedra about the b-axis are responsible for the charge ordered CE-type antiferromagnetic ground state at low temperatures. In addition a shift in the position of the rare earth ion along the c-axis has to be considered to account for observed distribution of bond distances around the rare earth ion.
We report the response of electrical resistivity $ρ$ to the application of magnetic fields (H) up to 140 kOe in the temperature interval 1.8-300 K for the compound, Gd7Rh3, ordering antiferromagnetically below 150 K. We find that there is an unusually large decrease of $ρ$ for moderate values of H in the close vicinity of room temperature uncharacteristic of paramagnets, with the magnitude of the magnetoresistance increasing with decreasing temperature as though the spin-order contribution to $ρ$ is temperature dependent. In addition, this compound exhibits giant magnetoresistance behaviour at…
We have measured the magnetic field dependence of the paramagnetic to high temperature magnetically ordered phase transition TQ(H) in CeB6 from 2 to 30 T using cantilever magnetometry. It is found that the phase separation temperature continuously increases in field with an increasingly positive slope. In addition, we find that measurements in strong magnetic field gradients have no effect on the phase transition.
A temperature-dependent EXAFS investigation of La{1-x}Ca{x}MnO3 is presented for the concentration range that spans the ferromagnetic-insulator (FMI) to ferromagnetic-metal (FMM) transition region, x = 0.16-0.22. The samples are insulating for x = 0.16-0.2 and show a metal/insulator transition for x = 0.22. All samples are ferromagnetic although the saturation magnetization for the 16% Ca sample is only ~ 70% of the expected value at 0.4T. We find that the FMI samples have similar correlations between changes in the local Mn-O distortions and the magnetization as observed previously for the co…
We report Electron Paramagnetic Resonance measurements on single crystalline and powder samples of Nd_0.5Ca_0.5MnO_3 across the charge-ordering transition at T_co=240 K down to the antiferromagnetic ordering transition at T_N = 140 K. The changes in the linewidth, g-factor and intensity as functions of temperature are studied to understand the nature of spin-dynamics in the system. We explain the observed large decrease in the linewidth from T_N to T_co in terms of motional narrowing caused by the hopping of the Jahn-Teller polarons yielding an activation energy of E_a = 0.13 eV. Similar analy…
Na2Co2TeO6 is a proposed approximate Kitaev magnet, yet its actual magnetic interactions are elusive due to a lack of knowledge on the full excitation spectrum. Here, using inelastic neutron scattering and single crystals, we determine the system's temperature-dependent magnetic excitations over the entire Brillouin zone. Without committing to specific models, we unveil a distinct signature of the third-nearest-neighbor coupling in the spin waves, which signifies the associated distance as an emerging "soft link" in the ordered state. The presence of at least six non-overlapping spin-wave bran…
We present and compare the results of temperature-dependent electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies on Pr_1-x Ca_xMnO_3 for x = 0.64 which is electron-doped with those on the hole doped x = 0.36 composition. The temperature dependence of the various parameters obtained from the powder and single crystal spectra show significant differences between the two manganites. At room temperature the `g' parameter for the electron doped system is less than the free electron `g' value `g_e', whereas for the hole-doped system it is more than `g_e'. Further, the `g' value and the linewidth obtained f…
Direction-dependent anisotropic exchange is a common feature of magnetic systems with strong spin-orbit coupling. Here we study the effect of such exchange upon macroscopic magnetic anisotropy for a face-centered-cubic model. By several theoretical techniques, we show that, both in the paramagnetic and ordered phases, the magnetic anisotropy is induced by fluctuations. Moreover, the magnetic anisotropy differs in the paramagnetic and ordered phases: in the paramagnetic phase the susceptibility is maximum along the $\langle111\rangle$ directions, while the magnetic moments orient along $\langle…
We present a bond-operator theory (BOT) suitable for description both magnetically ordered phases and paramagnetic phases with singlet ground states in spin-1/2 magnets. Proposed BOT provides a regular expansion of physical quantities in powers of 1/n, where n is the maximum number of bosons which can occupy a unit cell (physical results correspond to n=1). Two variants of BOT are suggested: for two and for four spins in the unit cell (two-spin and four-spin BOTs, respectively). We consider spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF) on simple square lattice bilayer by the two-spin BOT. Ground-s…
The local structure of (Al_0.06V_0.94)_2O_3 in the paramagnetic insulating (PI) and antiferromagnetically ordered insulating (AFI) phase has been investigated using hard and soft x-ray absorption techniques. It is shown that: 1) on a local scale, the symmetry of the vanadium sites in both the PI and the AFI phase is the same; and 2) the vanadium 3d - oxygen 2p hybridization, as gauged by the oxygen 1s absorption edge, is the same for both phases, but distinctly different from the paramagnetic metallic phase of pure V_2O_3. These findings can be understood in the context of a recently proposed …
The magnetically ordered states of the A-site ordered perovskite manganites LaBaMn2O6 and YBaMn2O6 have been investigated by muon spin relaxation in zero external magnetic field. Our data reveal striking differences in the nature of the magnetically ordered state of these materials. For LaBaMn2O6, the muSR time-spectra in the ferromagnetic state below ~ 330 K reveal a strongly inhomogeneous phase, reminiscent of a Griffiths phase. Within this magnetically inhomogeneous phase, an antiferromagnetic state develops below 150 K, which displays well defined static internal magnetic fields, but reach…
It is shown that for the theoretical description of the magnetic and structural phase transitions in the magnetics with magnetoactive ions of transition metals within the framework of the Landau theory of phase transitions the exchange group GxO(3) should be chosen as the group of symmetry of paramagnetic phase. Such a choice allows to describe the transition from the paramagnetic phase into the isotropic magnetically ordered phase (at Tc), and the spin-orbit transition from the isotropic into the anisotropic phase (at T<Tc). The exchange multiplet describes the spin-orbit phase transition.
We report a significant decrease in the low-temperature resistance induced by the application of an electric current on the $ab$-plane in the paramagnetic insulating (PMI) state of (La$_{0.4}$Pr$_{0.6}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$. A colossal electroresistance effect attaining -95% is observed at lower temperatures. A colossal magnetoresistive step appears near 5T at low temperatures below 10K, accompanied by an ultrasharp width of the insulator-metal transition. Injection of higher currents to the crystal causes a disappearance of the steplike transition. These findings have a close rel…
Two B-site ordered double perovskites, La2LiMoO6 and Ba2YMoO6, based on the S = 1/2 ion, Mo5+, have been investigated in the context of geometric magnetic frustration. Powder neutron diffraction, heat capacity, susceptibility, muon spin relaxation(_SR), and 89Y NMR- including MAS NMR- data have been collected. La2LiMoO6 deviates strongly from simple Curie-Weiss paramagnetic behavior below 150K and zero-field cooled/ field cooled (ZFC/FC)irreversibility occurs below 20K with a weak, broad susceptibility maximum near 5K in the ZFC data. A Curie-Weiss fit shows a reduced mu_eff=1.42μ_B, (spin onl…
Applying the local density approximation (LDA) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) to paramagnetic $α$-iron, we revisit a problem of theoretical description of its magnetic properties. The analysis of local magnetic susceptibility shows that at sufficiently low temperatures $T<1500K$, both, $e_{g}$ and $t_{2g}$ states equally contribute to the formation of the effective magnetic moment with spin S=1. The self-energy of t_{2g} states shows sizable deviations from Fermi-liquid form, which accompanies earlier found non-quasiparticle form of e_{g} states. By considering the non-uniform magnetic…
Ordered states in itinerant magnets may be related to magnetic moments displaying some weak local moment characteristics, as in intermetallic compounds hosting transition metal coordination complexes. In this paper, we report on the Fe $K$-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of the itinerant magnets $R$Fe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ ($R=$ Na, K, Ca, Sr, Ba), aiming at exploring the electronic and structural properties of the octahedral building block formed by Fe and the Sb ligands. We find evidence for strong hybridization between the Fe $3d$ and Sb $5p$ states at the Fermi level, giving experimental…
We report the magnetic and electronic properties of the bilayer ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ upon Fe substitution for Ru. We find that Sr$_3$(Ru$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)$_2$O$_7$ shows a spin-glass-like phase below 4 K for $x$ = 0.01 and commensurate E-type antiferromagnetically ordered insulating ground state characterized by the propagation vector $q_c$ = (0.25 0.25 0) for $x$ $\geq$ 0.03, respectively, in contrast to the paramagnetic metallic state in the parent compound with strong spin fluctuations occurring at wave vectors $q$ = (0.09 0 0) and (0.25 0 0). The observed antiferromagnetic ordering is …
Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques with and without application of an external magnetic field $H$, the magnetic ground states of Zn$_x$Co$_{4-x}$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2$ ($x=0,1$) were studied. Our results show that for $x=0$, the ground state is a magnetic long-range ordered (LRO) state where each tetrahedron forms an "umbrella"-type structure. On the other hand, for $x=1$, no static ordering was observed down to 1.5 K, which resembles the behavior found in the isostructural quantum system Zn$_x$Cu$_{4-x}$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2$. When $H$ field is applied, however the $x=1$ system develop…
Electron spin resonance study of frustrated pyrochlore Gd2Ti2O7 is performed in a wide frequency band for a temperature range 0.4-30 K, which covers paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases. The paramagnetic resonance reveals the spectroscopic g-factor about 2.0 and a temperature dependent linewidth. In ordered phases magnetic resonance spectra are distinctive for a nonplanar cubic (or tetrahedral) antiferromagnet with an isotropic susceptibility. In the high-field saturated phase, weakly-dispersive soft modes are observed and their field evolution is traced.
We discuss the notions of spin-orbital polarization and ordering in paramagnetic materials, and address their consequences in transition metal oxides. Extending the combined density functional and dynamical mean field theory scheme to the case of materials with large spin-orbit interactions, we investigate the electronic excitations of the paramagnetic phases of Sr2IrO4 and Sr2RhO4. We show that the interplay of spin-orbit interactions, structural distortions and Coulomb interactions suppresses spin-orbital fluctuations. As a result, the room temperature phase of Sr2IrO4 is a paramagnetic spin…
Recent work shows that a quantum spin liquid can arise in realistic fermionic models on a honeycomb lattice. We study the quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg honeycomb model, considering couplings J1, J2, and J3 up to third nearest neighbors. We use an unbiased pseudofermion functional renormalization group method to compute the magnetic susceptibility and determine the ordered and disordered states of the model. Aside from antiferromagnetic, collinear, and spiral order domains, we find a large paramagnetic region at intermediate J2 coupling. For larger J2 within this domain, we find a strong tendency…
We study the Holstein-Hubbard model at half filling to explore ordered phases including su- perconductivity (SC), antiferromagnetism (AF), and charge order (CO) in situations where the electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions are strong (~ electronic bandwidth). The model is solved in the dynamical mean-field approximation using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver. We determine the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and the SC order parameter and show that the phonon-induced retardation or the strong Coulomb interaction leads to a significant reduction and …
We report an infrared reflection spectroscopy study of La$_{1/2}$Ca$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ over a broad frequency range and temperature interval which covers the transitions from the high temperature paramagnetic to ferromagnetic and, upon further cooling, to antiferromagnetic phase. The structural phase transition, accompanied by a ferromagnetic ordering at T$_C$=234 K, leads to enrichment of the phonon spectrum. A charge ordered antiferromagnetic insulating ground state develops below the Néel transition temperature T$_N$=163 K. This is evidenced by the formation of charge density waves and opening …
Electrical resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements under high pressure were carried out in high-quality single crystals of $α$-Mn. The pressure-temperature phase diagram consists of an antiferromagnetic ordered phase (0<$P$<1.4 GPa, $T<T_{\rm N}$), a pressure-induced ordered phase (1.4<$P$<4.2-4.4 GPa, $T<T_{\rm A}$), and a paramagnetic phase. A significant increase was observed in the temperature dependence of ac-susceptibility at $T_{\rm A}$, indicating that the pressure-induced ordered phase has a spontaneous magnetic moment. Ferrimagnetic order and parasitic ferromagnetism are propo…
We study a $T=0$ quantum phase transition between a quantum paramagnetic state and a magnetically ordered state for a spin $S=1$ XXZ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-dimensional triangular lattice. The transition is induced by an easy plane single-ion anisotropy $D$. At the mean-field level, the system undergoes a direct transition at a critical $D = D_c$ between a paramagnetic state at $D > D_c$ and an ordered state with broken U(1) symmetry at $D < D_c$. We show that beyond mean field the phase diagram is very different and includes an intermediate, partially ordered chiral liquid phase. …
We report the results of extensive dynamical cluster approximation calculations, based on a quantum Monte Carlo solver, for the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model. Our particular cluster implementation renders possible the simulation of spontaneous antiferromagnetic symmetry breaking. By explicitly computing the single-particle spectral function both in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, we follow the evolution of the Fermi surface across this magnetic transition. The results, computed for clusters up to 16 orbitals, show clear evidence for the existence of three distinct Fermi su…
Thin films of Pr0.7Ca 0.3MnO3, Nd-0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 have been fabricated. by pulse laser deposition. Magnetic and electrical transport properties of these films were compared with their bulk solids. All the films grow in (101) direction on LaAlO3(100). Electrical transport measurements carried out with and without magnetic field has shown dr/dT<0 in these thin films. Application of magnetic field has shown dilution of the insulating behavior. The magnetization studies of Nd-0.5Sr0.5MnO3 exhibited ferromagnetic behavior at 260K and showed antiferomagnetic feature below 130K. This …
The energy-level scheme and wave functions of the titanium ions in LaTiO$_{3}$ are calculated using crystal-field theory and spin-orbit coupling. The theoretically derived temperature dependence and anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility agree well with experimental data obtained in an untwinned single crystal. The refined fitting procedure reveals an almost isotropic molecular field and a temperature dependence of the van Vleck susceptibility. The charge distribution of the 3d--electron on the Ti positions and the principle values of the quadrupole moments are derived and agree with NMR da…
The 'two-electron' doped rare earth mangnites Ca_1-x Ce_x MnO_3 (x = 0.1,0.2) are probed using resistivity, ac susceptibility and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements across their respective charge ordering (CO) temperatures T_CO = 173 K and 250 K. The EPR 'g' factor and intensity as well as the transport and magnetic behaviours of the two compositions are qualitatively similar and are as expected for CO systems. However, the EPR linewidth, reflective of the spin dynamics, for x = 0.1, shows a strongly anomalous temperature dependence, decreasing with decreasing temperature below…
For the paramagnetic insulating phase in the metal-ordered manganite YBaMn2O6, the so-called CE-type of charge/orbital ordered state was observed within the monoclinic ab-plane, which is most commonly observed for the ordinary half doped manganites. However, TEM revealed a 4-fold periodicity along the c-axis, suggesting a new stacking pattern, where planes of the CE-type are built up according to the sequence [aabb...]. Interestingly, when th system enters into the antiferromagnetic state, this stacking pattern changes into [aaaa...] or [abab], suggesting close interplay between spins and orbi…
The magnets are typically classified into Stoner and Heisenberg type, depending on the itinerant or localized nature of the constituent magnetic moments. In this work, we investigate theoretically the behaviour of the magnetic moments of iron and cobalt in their B2-ordered alloy. The results based on local spin density approximation (LSDA) for the density functional theory (DFT) suggest that the Co magnetic moment strongly depends on the directions of the surrounding magnetic moments, which usually indicates the Stoner-type mechanism of magnetism. This is consistent with the disordered local m…
The exotic normal state of iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe, which exhibits vanishing magnetic order and possesses an electronic nematic order, triggered extensive explorations of its magnetic ground state. To understand its novel properties, we study the ground state of a highly frustrated spin-$1$ system with bilinear-biquadratic interactions using unbiased large-scale density matrix renormalization group. Remarkably, with increasing biquadratic interactions, we find a paramagnetic phase between Néel and stripe magnetic ordered phases. We identify this phase as a candidate of nematic qu…

In this work, we investigate the representative case of the homometallic Co ludwigite Co$^{2+}_2$Co$^{3+}$O$_2$BO$_3$ ($Pbam$ space group) with four distinct Co crystallographic sites [$M1$-$M4$] surrounded by oxygen octahedra. The mixed-valent character of the Co ions up to at least $T=873$ K is verified through x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) experiments. Single crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD) and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) confirm that the Co ions at the $M4$ site are much smaller than the others at low temperatures, consistent with a Co$^{3+}$ oxidation state at $M4$ and…
The phase diagram of Pr0.65(CaySr1-y)0.35MnO3, 0.6 <= y <= 0.8, has been determined by neutron diffraction, magnetization and electrical conductivity measurements in order to investigate the nature of the transition between ferromagnetic metallic and charge-ordered insulating states near y=0.75. Two possible scenarios for this transition have been proposed: a "quantum critical point"-like feature, near which an associated charge-disordered paramagnetic phase is present, or a phase coexistence region. We demonstrate that the latter case is true, phase segregation occurring on a mesoscopic/macro…
We study the problem of partially ordered phases with periodically arranged disordered (paramagnetic) sites on the pyrochlore lattice, a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. The periodicity of these phases is characterized by one or more wave vectors k=(1/2 1/2 1/2). Starting from a general microscopic Hamiltonian including anisotropic nearest-neighbor exchange, long-range dipolar interactions and second- and third-nearest neighbor exchange, we identify using standard mean-field theory (s-MFT) an extended range of interaction parameters that support partially ordered phases. We demonstrate th…
Theory of Hall transport of spins in a correlated paramagnetic phase is developed. By identifying the thermal Hall current operator in the spin language, which turns out to equal the spin chirality in the pure Heisenberg model, various response functions can be derived straightforwardly. Subsequent reduction to the Schwinger boson representation of spins allows a convenient calculation of thermal and spin Hall coefficients in the paramagnetic regime using self-consistent mean-field theory. Com- parison is made to results from the Holstein-Primakoff reduction of spin operators appropriate for o…
In Mott insulators, the strong electron-electron Coulomb repulsion prevents metallicity and charge excitations are gapped. In dimensions greater than one, their spins are usually ordered antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. Geometrical frustrations can destroy this long-range order, leading to exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) states. However, their magnetic ground states have been a long-standing mystery. Here we show that a QSL state in the organic Mott insulator EtMe$_3$Sb[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ with two-dimensional triangular lattice has Pauli-paramagnetic-like low-energy excitations, whic…
The half-filled extended Hubbard model, in one and two dimensions, is studied by means of the 2-pole approximation within the Composite Operator Method with the aim at improving the possibilities to describe some of the experimental features observed for quasi-1D organic superconductors and Cu-O planes of cuprates. The phase diagrams ($T$-$V$ and $V$-$U$) are analyzed with respect to the paramagnetic metal - paramagnetic insulator - charge ordered phase transitions. The relevant features of the diagrams (rank of the phase transitions, critical points, reentrant behavior) are discussed in detai…
We extend to magnetically ordered phases a recently developed expansion in 1/d for coupled-dimer Heisenberg magnets, where d is the number of space dimensions. This extension utilizes generalized bond operators describing spin excitations on top of a reference state involving triplet condensates. We explicitly consider a model of dimers on a hypercubic lattice which displays, in addition to the paramagnetic singlet phase, a collinear antiferromagnetic phase for which we calculate static and dynamic observables at zero temperature. In particular, we show that the 1/d expansion smoothly connects…
We present thermodynamic phase diagrams showing magnetic analog of "three states of matter," namely, spin liquid, paramagnetic, and magnetically ordered phases, obtained by unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Our simulations are carried out for Kitaev's toric codes in two and three dimensions, i.e., the simplest realizations of gapped topological $Z_2$ spin liquids, extended by a nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic Ising coupling. We find that the ordered phase borders on the spin liquid by a discontinuous transition line in three dimensions, while it grows continuously from the quantum criti…
General conditions in which disordered, spin liquid, and valence-bond ordered phases occur in quantum Ising antiferromagnets are studied using the prototype Kagome lattice spin models. A range of quantum dynamical processes in the Ising model, with and without total Ising spin conserved, are analytically shown to yield all three characteristic quantum paramagnetic phases in the Kagome system. Special emphasis is given to the XXZ model that can be sensibly compared to the Kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. It is explicitly demonstrated that the total-spin-conserving dynamics can yield a…
For coupled-dimer Heisenberg magnets, a paradigm of magnetic quantum phase transitions, we develop a systematic expansion in 1/d, the inverse number of space dimensions. The expansion employs a formulation of the bond-operator technique and is based on the observation that a suitably chosen product-state wavefunction yields exact zero-temperature expectation values of local observables in the d->infty limit, with corrections vanishing as 1/d. We demonstrate the approach for a model of dimers on a hypercubic lattice, which generalizes the square-lattice bilayer Heisenberg model to arbitrary d. …
We performed $^{59}$Co nuclear magnetic and quadrupole resonance (NMR and NQR) measurements under pressure on a single-crystalline CeCoSi, which undergoes an unresolved phase transition at $T_0$. The NQR spectra clearly showed that the phase transition at $T_0$ is nonmagnetic, but any symmetry lowering at the Co site was not seen irrespective of the feature of second-order phase transition. By contrast, the NMR spectra were split by the induced magnetic field perpendicular to the external magnetic field. These results show that the phase below $T_0$ is not a simple paramagnetic state but is mo…
Recently it was proposed that the orbital ordering of $π_{x,y}^*$ molecular orbitals in the superoxide CsO$_2$ compound leads to the formation of spin-1/2 chains below the structural phase transition occuring at $T_{\rm{s1}}=61$~K on cooling. Here we report a detailed X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of this phase in CsO$_2$ powder. The EPR signal appears as a broad line below $T_{\rm{s1}}$, which is replaced by the antiferromagnetic resonance below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}=8.3$~K. The temperature dependence of the EPR linewidth between $T_{\rm{s1}}$ and $T_{\rm{N}}$ a…
We discuss the paramagnetic and Neel-ordered phases of the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian on the 2D square lattice by means of bond Fermions. In the doped case we find two antiferromagnetic solutions, the first one with small ordered moment, heavy bands, and an antiferromagetically folded large Fermi surface - i.e. including the localized spins - the second one with large ordered moment, light bands and an antiferromagnetically folded conduction electron-only Fermi surface. The zero temperature phase diagram as a function of Kondo coupling and conduction electron density shows first and second orde…
The electron paramagnetic resonance study for an organic superconductor $β''$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{4}$[(H$_3$O)Ga(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$]$\cdot$C$_6$H$_5$NO$_2$ reveals that superconductivity coexists uniformly with the charge ordered state in one material. In the charge ordered state, the interplane spin exchange is gapped, while the in-plane conductivity is not significantly modified. This anisotropic behavior is explained by the exotic charge ordered state, in which molecular-site selective carrier localization coexists with conducting carriers on other molecules. Relationship between superconductivity an…
Effects of spontaneous parity breaking by charge, spin, and orbital orders are investigated in a two-band Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. This is a minimal model in which the inter-orbital hopping, atomic spin-orbit coupling, and strong electron correlation give rise to fascinating properties, such as the magnetoelectric effects, quantum spin Hall effect, and spin or valley splitting in the band structure. We perform the symmetry analysis of possible broken-parity states and the mean-field analysis of their competition. We find that the model at 1/4 filling exhibits a spin-orbital compos…
We carefully consider the interplay between ferromagnetism and the Kondo screening effect in the conventional Kondo lattice systems at finite temperatures. Within an effective mean-field theory for small conduction electron densities, a complete phase diagram has been determined. In the ferromagnetic ordered phase, there is a characteristic temperature scale to indicate the presence of the Kondo screening effect. We further find two distinct ferromagnetic long-range ordered phases coexisting with the Kondo screening effect: spin fully polarized and partially polarized states. A continuous phas…
We use neutron polarization analysis to study temperature dependence of the spin excitation anisotropy in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which has a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural distortion at $T_s$ and antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transition at $T_N$ with ordered moments along the orthorhombic $a$-axis below $T_s\approx T_N\approx 136$ K. In the paramagnetic tetragonal state at 160 K, spin excitations are isotropic in spin space with $M_a=M_b=M_c$, where $M_a$, $M_b$, and $M_c$ are spin excitations polarized along the $a$, $b$, and $c$-axis directions of the orthorhombic lattice, respectively. On co…
Magnetization, magnetoresistance, and magnetodielectric measurements have been carried out on the half doped charge ordered manganite, Pr_0.5Ca_0.5MnO_3. The low temperature state is found to be strongly dependent on the oxygen stoichiometry whereas the high temperature state remains almost unaltered. A disorder driven phase separation in the low temperature state is noticed in the magnetic, magnetoresistance, and dielectric measurements which is attributed to the oxygen deficiency in the compound. A considerable magnetodielectric (MD) effect is noticed close to room temperature at 280 K which…
We investigate ordered phases (s-wave superconducting (SC), antiferromagnetic (AF) and charge ordered (CO) phases) of the half-filled Holstein-Hubbard model using the dynamical mean-field theory in combination with a continuous time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver. We particularly focus on the parameter regime where the electron-electron Coulomb interaction and the phonon mediated retarded attractive interaction are both comparable to the bare electron bandwidth to understand the interplay of these interactions and the retardation effects due to finite phonon frequency ω_0. Results for the…
It has recently been found that bosonic excitations of ordered media, such as phonons or spinons, can exhibit topologically nontrivial band structures. Of particular interest are magnon and triplon excitations in quantum magnets, as they can easily be manipulated by an applied field. Here we study triplon excitations in an S=1/2 quantum spin ladder and show that they exhibit nontrivial topology, even in the quantum-disordered paramagnetic phase. Our analysis reveals that the paramagnetic phase actually consists of two separate regions with topologically distinct triplon excitations. We demonst…
The impurity induced antiferromagnetic ordering of the doped spin-Peierls magnet Cu(1-x)Mg(x)GeO(3) was studied by ESR technique. Crystals with the Mg concentration x<4% demonstrate a coexistence of paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic ESR modes. This coexistence indicates the separation of a macroscopically uniform sample in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. In the presence of the long-range spin-Peierls order (in a sample with x=1.71%) the volume of the antiferromagnetic phase immediately below the Néel point T_N is much smaller than the volume of the paramagnetic phase. In the pr…
A field theory appropriate for magnets that display helical order due to the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya mechanism, a class that includes MnSi and FeGe, is used to derive the phase diagram in a mean-field approximation. The helical phase, the conical phase in an external magnetic field, and recent proposals for the structure of the A-phase and the non-Fermi-liquid region in the paramagnetic phase are discussed. It is shown that the orientation of the helical pitch vector along an external magnetic field within the conical phase occurs via two distinct phase transitions. The Goldstone modes that resul…
The possibility of charge order is theoretically examined for the Kondo lattice model in two dimensions, which does not include bare repulsive interactions. Using two complementary numerical methods, we find that charge order appears at quarter filling in an intermediate Kondo coupling region. The charge ordered ground state is an insulator exhibiting an antiferromagnetic order at charge-poor sites, while the paramagnetic charge-ordered state at finite temperatures is metallic with pseudogap behavior. We confirm that the stability of charge order is closely related with the local Kondo-singlet…
We have measured the magnetic field dependence of the paramagnetic to the field-induced high temperature antiferroquadrupolar magnetically ordered phase transition is CeB6 from 0 to 60 T using a variety of techniques. It is found that the field-dependent phase separation line becomes re-entrant above 35 T and below 10 K. Measurements of resonant ultra-sound, specific heat and neutron diffraction show conclusively that the zero-field temperature-dependent phase transition is to a state with no ordered dipole moments, but with second order transition signatures in both sound attenuation and spec…
