Some years ago, a new powerful technique, known as the Classical Effective Field Theory, was proposed to describe classical phenomena in gravitational systems. Here we show how this approach can be useful to investigate theoretically important issues, such as gravitational radiation in any spacetime dimension. In particular, we derive for the first time the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffman Lagrangian and we compute Einstein's quadrupole formula for any number of flat spacetime dimensions.
In this review paper we investigate the connection between gravity and electromagnetism from Faraday to the present day. The particular focus is on the connection between gravitational and electromagnetic radiation. We discuss electromagnetic radiation produced when a gravitational wave passes through a magnetic field. We then discuss the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with gravitational waves via Feynman diagrams of the process $graviton + graviton \to photon + photon$. Finally we review recent work on the vacuum production of counterpart electromagnetic radiation by gravitational w…
The effective field theory of quantum gravity generically predicts non-locality to be present in the effective action, which results from the low-energy propagation of gravitons and massless matter. Working to second order in gravitational curvature, we reconsider the effects of quantum gravity on the gravitational radiation emitted from a binary system. In particular, we calculate for the first time the leading order quantum gravitational correction to the classical quadrupole radiation formula which appears at second order in Newton's constant.
We discuss an ambiguity of the derivation of the Hawking radiation through the gravitational anomaly method and propose modifications of this method such that it reproduces the correct thermal fluxes. In this modified gravitational anomaly method, we employ the two-dimensional conformal field theory technique.
The gravitational radiation power of a binary system in a noncommutative space is derived and it's rate of the period decrease is calculated to first order in noncommutativity parameter. By comparing the theoretical results with the observational data of the binary pulsar PSR 1913+16, we find a bound on the noncommutativity parameter.
Gravitational waves have been directly detected and astronomical observations indicate that our Universe has a positive cosmological constant $Λ$. Nevertheless, a theoretical gauge-invariant notion of gravitational waves arriving at infinity (escaping from the space-time) in the presence of a positive $Λ$ has been elusive. We find the answer to this long-standing gravitational puzzle and present a geometric, gauge-invariant radiation condition at infinity.
We investigate the possibility of observing very low frequency (VLF) electromagnetic radiation produced from the vacuum by gravitational waves. We review the calculations leading to the possibility of vacuum conversion of gravitational waves into electromagnetic waves and show how this process evades the well-known prohibition against particle production from gravitational waves. Using Newman-Penrose scalars, we estimate the luminosity of this proposed electromagnetic counterpart radiation coming from gravitational waves produced by neutron star oscillations. The detection of electromagnetic c…
We use effective field theory tools to study non-conservative effects in systems of gravitating objects in general spacetime dimension. Using the classical version of the Closed Time Path formalism, we treat both the radiative gravitational field and its dynamical sources within a single action principle. New results include the radiation-reaction effective action in arbitrary dimensions to leading and +1PN orders, as well as the generalized Quadrupole formula to order +1PN.
A novel criterion to determine the presence of gravitational radiation arriving to, or departing from, null infinity of any weakly asymptotically-simple space-time with vanishing cosmological constant is given. The quantities involved are geometric, of tidal nature, with good gauge behaviour and univocally defined at null infinity. The relationship with the classical characterisation using the News tensor is analysed in detail. A new balance law at infinity is presented, which may be useful to define `radiation states'.
We investigate gravitational radiation in dynamical noncommutative spaces. By including corrections to the gravitational potential due to dynamical noncommutativity, we calculate the power in gravitational radiation and use observational data to place an upper bound on the noncommutativity parameter. We also study quantum interference induced by gravitational potential in the usual and dynamical noncommutative spaces, and compare the resulting phase difference in these cases with that in commutative space.
We investigate gravitational Cherenkov radiation in a healthy branch of background solutions in the ghost-free bigravity model. In this model, because of the modification of dispersion relations, each polarization mode can possess subluminal phase velocities, and the gravitational Cherenkov radiation could be potentially emitted from a relativistic particle. In the present paper, we derive conditions for the process of the gravitational Cherenkov radiation to occur and estimate the energy emission rate for each polarization mode. We found that the gravitational Cherenkov radiation emitted even…
We demonstrate that the general second-order scalar-tensor theories, which have attracted attention as possible modified gravity models to explain the late time cosmic acceleration, could be strongly constrained from the argument of the gravitational Cherenkov radiation. To this end, we consider the purely kinetic coupled gravity and the extended galileon model. In these models, the propagation speed of tensor mode could be less than the speed of light, which puts very strong constraints from the gravitational Cherenkov radiation.
We provide evidence that gravitational radiation in a 4D radiation-dominated universe, with equation-of-state $w=1/3$, consists of two components: helicity-2 gravitons and massless scalar acoustic waves. On physical grounds, we would expect the homogeneous solution of the Weyl tensor components to be a good approximation to its inhomogeneous counterparts, whenever the observer is located well in the far zone of an isolated astrophysical source of cosmological gravitational radiation. We show explicitly that these homogeneous and inhomogeneous solutions both receive contributions from the gauge…
The debate concerning the viability of f(R)-gravity as a natural extension of General Relativity could be realistically addressed by using results coming from binary pulsars like PSR 1913+16. To this end, we develop a quadrupolar approach to the gravitational radiation for a class of ana- lytic f(R)-models. We show that experimental results are compatible with a consistent range of f(R)-models. This means that f(R)-gravity is not ruled out by the observations and gravitational radiation (in strong field regime) could be a test-bed for such theories.
We establish a correspondence between perturbative classical gluon and gravitational radiation emitted by spinning sources, to linear order in spin. This is an extension of the non-spinning classical perturbative double copy and uses the same color-to-kinematic replacements. The gravitational theory has a scalar (dilaton) and a 2-form field (the Kalb-Ramon axion) in addition to the graviton. In arXiv:1712.09250, we computed axion radiation in the gravitational theory to show that the correspondence fixes its action. Here, we present complete details of the gravitational computation. In particu…
I derive the Hawking flux from black holes of constant negative curvature and from a black hole of constant negative curvature conformally coupled to a scalar field, using the covariant gravitational anomalies method.
We demonstrate that full description of both electromagnetic and gravitational radiation from massless particles lies outside the scope of classical theory. Synchrotron radiation from the hypothetical massless charge in quantum electrodynamics in external magnetic field has finite total power while the corresponding classical formula diverges in the massless limit. We argue that in both cases classical theory describes correctly only the low-frequency part of the spectra, while the total power diverges because of absence of the UV frequency cutoff. Failure of description of gravitational radia…
In the context of the bosonic string theory, we shall extract the general radiation amplitude of a massless closed string from the interaction of two parallel unstable D$p$-branes. The branes are non-stationary and have been dressed by background fields. The foregoing amplitude will be rewritten for the massless state radiation from the branes with the large distance. Besides, we shall study the gravitational and dilatonic radiations from this configuration.
We derive a universal expression for the gravitational radiation energy spectrum $dE^{GW}/dω$ at sub-leading order emitted from a generic gravitational hard scattering of multi-particles or multi-bodies. Our result includes all $\mathcal{O}(ω)$ corrections to the gravitational radiation flux from a generic $2\rightarrow N$ collision, in both the cases of massless and massive particles/bodies. We also show the dependence of the radiation energy fluxby the quantum spin in case of particle collisions. Then, we consider the specific case of a gravitational elastic scattering of two massive bodies,…
This work reviews our current understanding of Cherenkov-type processes in vacuum that may occur due to a possible violation of Lorentz invariance. The description of Lorentz violation is based on the Standard Model Extension (SME). To get an overview as general as possible, the most important findings for vacuum Cherenkov radiation in Minkowski spacetime are discussed. After doing so, special emphasis is put on gravitational Cherenkov radiation. For a better understanding, the essential properties of the gravitational SME are recalled in this context. The common grounds and differences of vac…
We argue that classical bulk gravitational radiation effects in AdS/CFT, previously ignored because of their subleading nature in the 1/Nc-expansion, are magnified by powers of large Lorentz factors gamma for ultrarelativistic jets, thereby dominating other forms of jet energy loss in holography at finite temperature. We make use of the induced gravitational self-force in thermal AdS5 to estimate its effects. In a thermal medium, relativistic jets may loose most of their energy through longitudinal drag caused by the energy accumulated in their nearby field as they zip through the strongly cou…
