We present high resolution submillimeter interferometric imaging of two of the brightest high-redshift submillimeter galaxies known: GN20 and AzTEC1 at 0.8 and 0.3 arcsec resolution respectively. Our data - the highest resolution submillimeter imaging of high redshift sources accomplished to date - was collected in three different array configurations: compact, extended, and very extended. We derive angular sizes of 0.6 and 1.0 arcsec for GN20 and 0.3 and 0.4 arcsec for AzTEC1 from modeling their visibility functions as a Gaussian and elliptical disk respectively. Because both sources are B-band dropouts, they likely lie within a relatively narrow redshift window around z~4, which indicates their angular extent corresponds to physical scales of 4-8 and 1.5-3 kpc respectively for the starburst region. By way of a series of simple assumptions, we find preliminary evidence that these hyperluminous starbursts - with star formation rates >1000 $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ - are radiating at or close to their Eddington limit. Should future high resolution observations indicate that these two objects are typical of a population of high redshift Eddington-limited starbursts, this could have important consequences for models of star formation and feedback in extreme environments.
Using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have obtained rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of two bright submillimeter galaxies. SMMJ02399-0136 at z=2.81 shows a superposition of PAH emission features and a mid-infrared continuum, indicating significant and roughly equal contributions to its bolometric luminosity from star formation and from a Compton-thick AGN. We derive a new redshift of z=2.80 for MMJ154127+6616 from the IRS spectrum and find this object is dominated by starburst PAH emission. The rest frame mid- to far-infrared spectral energy distrib…
We report on the detection of the Sunyaev -- Zel'dovich (SZ) signals toward the most luminous X-ray cluster RXJ1347-1145 at Nobeyama Radio Observatory (21 and 43 GHz) and at James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (350 GHz). In particular the latter is the first successful detection of the SZ temperature increment in the submillimeter band which resolved the profile of a cluster of galaxies. Both the observed spectral dependence and the radial profile of the SZ signals are fully consistent with those expected from the X-ray observation of the cluster. The combined analysis of 21GHz and 350GHz data repro…
Deep surveys at 850microns from Mauna Kea using the SCUBA camera on the JCMT appear to have discovered a substantial population of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs: L_ir > 10^{12} L_sun). The cumulative space density of these sources (~10,000 per sq.deg with S_850 > 1mJy) is sufficient to account for nearly all of the extragalactic background light at submillimeter wavelengths. Current estimates of the redshift distribution suggest a peak in the comoving space density of SCUBA sources at z = 1-3, similar to what is observed for QSOs and radio galaxies. The luminosity density in the far-i…
We report deep K-band (18-27GHz) observations with the 100-m Green Bank Telescope of HCN(1-0) line emission towards the two submillimeter-selected galaxies (SMGs) SMMJ02399-0136 (z=2.81) and SMMJ16359+6612 (z=2.52). For both sources we have obtained spectra with channel-to-channel rms noise of <=0.5mJy, resulting in velocity-integrated line fluxes better than < 0.1 Jy km/s, although we do not detect either source. Such sensitive observations -- aided by gravitational lensing of the sources -- permit us to put upper limits of L_HCN(1-0) < 2x10^10 K km/s pc^2 on the intrinsic HCN(1-0) line lumin…
We present post-outburst observations of the mid-infrared spectrum and submillimeter continuum of the illuminating source of the newly-discovered McNeil's Nebula in the L1630 region of Orion. The 12 micron flux of this source has increased by a factor of 25 after the outburst, whereas the submillimeter continuum remains at its pre-outburst level. The bolometric luminosity has increased by at least an order of magnitude, to ~34 L_sun, and is likely less than 90 L_sun. The mid-infrared spectrum exhibits a strong and red continuum with no emission or absorption features. The infrared slope of the…
Observations at far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths promise to revolutionize the study of high redshift galaxies and AGN by providing a unique probe of the conditions within heavily extinguished regions of star formation and nuclear activity. Observational capabilities in this spectral region will expand greatly in the next decade as new observatories are developed both in space and on the ground. These facilities include the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF), the far-infrared and submillimeter telescope (FIRST), and the millimeter array (MMA). In the longer term, the requiremen…
We present rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 13 submillimeter galaxies, obtained using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The sample includes exclusively bright objects from blank fields and cluster lens assisted surveys that have accurate interferometric positions. We find that the majority of spectra are well fitted by a starburst template or by the superposition of PAH emission features and a weak mid-infrared continuum, the latter a tracer of Active Galactic Nuclei (including Compton-thick ones). We obtain mid-infrared spectroscopic reds…
We report on 450- and 850-micron observations of the interacting galaxy pair, VV114E+W (IC1623), taken with the SCUBA camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, and near-infrared observations taken with UFTI on the UK Infrared Telescope. The system VV114 is in an early stage of a gas-rich merger. We detect submillimeter (sub-mm) emission extended over 30 arcsec (12 kpc) and find a good correlation between the spatial distribution of the sub-mm and CO emission. Both the CO and sub-mm emission peak near the reddest region of VV114E and extend toward VV114W. The bulk of the sub-mm emission resi…
We report 350micron observations of 18 nearby luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), using the Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera II (SHARC-II) mounted on the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) 10.4m telescope. Combining our 350micron flux measurements with the existing far-infrared (far-IR) and submillimeter (submm) data, we fit a single-temperature model to the spectral energy distributions (SEDs), and find the dust temperatures, emissivity indices and far-IR luminosities having sample medians of Td = 39.4+-7.9K, beta = 1.6+-0.3 and log(Lfir/Lsolar) = 11.2+-0.6. An empirical inve…
New far-infrared and submillimeter data are used to solidify and to extend to long wavelengths the empirical calibration of the infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of normal star-forming galaxies. As was found by Dale et al. (2001), a single parameter family, characterized by f_nu(60 microns)/f_nu(100 microns), is adequate to describe the range of normal galaxy spectral energy distributions observed by IRAS and ISO from 3 to 100 microns. However, predictions based on the first generation models at longer wavelengths (122 to 850 microns) are increasingly overluminous compared to the dat…
We present new Hubble Space Telescope, high-resolution optical imaging of the submm luminous Lyman-break galaxy, Westphal-MMD11, an interacting starburst at z=2.979. The new imaging data, in conjunction with re-analysis of Keck optical and near-IR spectra, demonstrate MMD11 to be an interacting system of at least three components: a luminous blue source, a fainter blue source, and an extremely red object (ERO) with R-K>6. The separations between components are \~8 kpc (Lambda=0.7, Omega_M=0.3, h=0.65), similar to some of the local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs). The lack of obvious A…
We present a simple model, developed to estimate the contribution of Active Galactic Nuclei to the far--infrared background, closely linked to the AGN synthesis model for the X-ray background. According to our calculation the AGN contribution is never dominant, ranging from a few to 15 percent between 100 and 850 micron.
We report the detection of CO(3-2) emission from the submillimeter-selected luminous galaxy SMM J14011+0252. The optical counterpart of the submillimeter source has been identified as a merger system with spectral characteristics consistent with a starburst at z=2.565. The CO emission confirms the optical identification of the submillimeter source and implies a molecular gas mass of 5x10^{10}h_{75}^{-2} M(sun), after correcting for a lensing amplification factor of 2.75. The large molecular gas mass and the radio emission are consistent with the starburst interpretation of the source. These re…
Polarized far-infrared and submillimeter emission is calculated for models of nonspherical dust grains that are constrained to reproduce the observed wavelength-dependent extinction and polarization of starlight. For emission from regions where the magnetic field is perpendicular to the line-of-sight, the far-infrared emission is expected to have substantial linear polarization at wavelengths longer than 100 microns, but the degree of linear polarization, and its variation with wavelength, is model-dependent. Models in which the starlight polarization is produced by both amorphous silicate and…
I briefly describe some results about luminous distant dusty galaxies obtained in the 5 years since sensitive two-dimensional bolometer array cameras became available. The key requirements for making additional progress in understanding the properties of these galaxies are discussed, especially the potential role of photometric redshifts based on radio, submillimeter and far-infrared continuum observations.
We report on submillimeter and infrared observations of 28 radio-selected galaxies in the Spitzer First Look Survey Verification field (FLSV). All of the radio-selected galaxies that show evidence for emission at 850um with SCUBA have Spitzer counterparts at 24um, while only half of the radio-selected galaxies without 850um emission have detectable counterparts at 24um. The data show a wide range of infrared colors (S70/S24 < 5--30, S8/S3.6 < 0.3--4), indicative of a mixture of infrared-warm AGN and cooler starburst dominated sources. The galaxies showing 850um emission have Spitzer flux densi…
The first unbiased surveys for high-redshift galaxies in the submillimeter (submm) and far-infrared (FIR) wavebands have been made over the last two years. When combined with the intensity of extragalactic background radiation in the same wavebands, we have a reasonable first view of the dust enshrouded Universe. Limited spatial resolution hampers the identification of the submm galaxies, and follow-up observations currently consume much larger amounts of telescope time than the initial submm-wave detections. Here the prospects for future submm/FIR surveys are discussed, highlighting the impor…
Faint submillimeter sources detected with the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope have faced an identification problem due to the telescope's broad beam profile. Here we propose a new method to identify such submillimeter sources with a mid-infrared image having a finer point spread function. The Infrared Space Observatory has provided a very deep 6.7 um image of the Hawaii Deep Field SSA13. All three faint 850 um sources in this field have their 6.7 um counterparts. They have been identified with interacting galaxy pairs in optical images. These pair…
We present mid-infrared spectra of 5 submillimeter galaxies at z=0.65-2.38 taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Four of these sources, at z<1.5, have strong PAH features and their composite spectrum is well fitted by an M82-like spectrum with an additional power-law component consistent with that expected from AGN activity. Based on a comparison of the 7.7-micron PAH equivalent width and the PAH-to-infrared luminosity ratio of these galaxies with local templates, we conclude that these galaxies host both star-formation and AGN activity, with star-formation dominating the bolometric luminosi…
The coming Planck and Herschel missions will survey the sky at unprecedented angular scales and sensitivities. Simulations are needed for better interpretating the results of the surveys and for testing new methods of, e.g., source extraction and component separation. We present new simulations of the infrared and submillimeter cosmic background, including the correlation between infrared galaxies. The simulations were used to quantify the source-detection thresholds for Herschel/SPIRE and Planck/HFI, as well as to study the detectability of the cosmic infrared background correlated fluctuatio…
The results of the first generation of submillimeter-wave surveys have been published. The opening of this new window on the distant Universe has added considerably to our understanding of the galaxy formation process, by revealing a numerous population of very luminous distant galaxies. Most would have been very difficult to identify using other methods. The potential importance of selection effects, especially those connected with the spectral energy distributions of the detected galaxies, for the interpretation of the results are highlighted.
We present new data obtained with the Submillimeter Array for a sample of fourteen nearby luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The galaxies were selected to have luminosity distances D < 200 Mpc and far-infrared luminosities log(L_FIR) > 11.4. The galaxies were observed with spatial resolutions of order 1 kpc in the CO J=3-2, CO J=2-1, 13CO J=2-1, and HCO+ J=4-3 lines as well as the continuum at 880 microns and 1.3 mm. We have combined our CO and continuum data to measure an average gas-to-dust mass ratio of 120 +/- 28 (rms deviation 109) in the central regions of these galaxies, very…
I discuss our ongoing Owens Valley Millimeter Array observations and Keck near-infrared wavelength observations of the high-redshift sub-mm population of galaxies. These observations are important for our understanding of the distant universe since the sub-mm population accounts for a large fraction of the extragalactic background at mm/sub-mm wavelengths and contributes significantly to the total amount of star-formation and AGN activity at high redshift. The CO data suggest that the sub-mm galaxies are analogous to the gas-rich ultraluminous systems found in the local universe. Initial near-…
SAFIRE is a versatile imaging Fabry-Perot spectrograph covering 145 to 655 microns, with spectral resolving powers ranging over 5-10,000. Selected as a "PI" instrument for the airborne Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), SAFIRE will apply two-dimensional pop-up bolometer arrays to provide background-limited imaging spectrometry. Superconducting transition edge bolometers and SQUID multiplexers are being developed for these detectors. SAFIRE is expected to be a "First Light" instrument, useable during the initial SOFIA operations. Although a PI instrument rather than a "Fa…
Luminous submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) have been known for some time to produce a substantial fraction of the far-IR/submillimeter background. New observations show that these systems are not only very luminous, but also very massive. Here we present results from (a) a survey of SMGs' molecular line emission, which has confirmed Keck optical redshifts and revealed their high gas and dynamical masses; and (b) a detailed case study of the rest-frame optical emission from one SMG, which has revealed its high metallicity and old stellar population. We infer a high z~2.7 comoving number density of …
The cosmic infrared background (CIB) radiation was a long-sought fossil of energetic processes associated with structure formation and chemical evolution since the Big Bang. The COBE Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) and Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) were specifically designed to search for this background from 1.25 microns to millimeter wavelengths. These two instruments provided high quality, absolutely calibrated all-sky maps which have enabled the first detections of the CIB, initially at far infrared and submillimeter wavelengths, and more recently in the ne…
We present the multi-wavelength identifications for 23 sources in the Canada-UK Deep Submillimeter Survey (CUDSS) 14h field. The identifications have been selected on the basis of radio and near-infrared data and we argue that, to our observational limits, both are effective at selecting the correct counterparts of the SCUBA sources. We discuss the properties of these identifications and find that they are very red in near-infrared color, with many classified as Extremely Red Objects, and show disturbed morphologies. Using the entire CUDSS catalogue of 50 sources we use a combination of spectr…
Although far-IR -- mm-wave astronomy has now been developing for several decades, access to this portion of the spectrum remains difficult and limited. Relative to their optical-wavelength counterparts, the submillimeter observatories are both small in units of wavelength and hot in units of photon energy, which imposes limits on their angular resolution and sensitivity. Nevertheless, even the modest far-IR and submillimeter observations obtained in the last two decades have revolutionized our understanding the physics and chemistry of the ISM, the formation of stars, and the cosmic history of…
We present 70 micron properties of submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) North field. Out of thirty submillimeter galaxies (S_850 > 2 mJy) in the central GOODS-N region, we find two with secure 70 micron detections. These are the first 70 micron detections of SMGs. One of the matched SMGs is at z ~ 0.5 and has S_70/S_850 and S_70/S_24 ratios consistent with a cool galaxy. The second SMG (z = 1.2) has infrared-submm colors which indicate it is more actively forming stars. We examine the average 70 micron properties of the SMGs by performing a stack…
Submillimeter (and in some cases millimeter) wavelength continuum measurements are presented for a sample of 40 active galactic nuclei (probably all quasars) lensed by foreground galaxies. The object of this study is to use the lensing boost, anywhere from ~3- 20 times, to detect dust emission from more typical AGNs than the extremely luminous ones currently accessible without lensing. The sources are a mix of radio loud and radio quiet quasars, and, after correction for synchrotron radation (in the few cases where necessary), 23 of the 40 (58%) are detected in dust emission at 850um; 11 are a…
Using the ISOPHOT Serendipity Survey (ISOSS) at 170um a sample of galactic star-forming regions exhibiting very cold dust temperatures (< 20 K) and high masses (> 100 M_sun) has been established. We characterise the star-forming content of five regions that were selected as potential sites for early stage high-mass star formation using SCUBA (JCMT) and Spitzer observations. In every region we identify one to four submillimeter clumps with projected sizes between 0.1 and 0.4 pc. The dust temperatures range from 11.6 to 21.3 K and the estimated clump masses are 2 to 166 M_sun. Towards the majori…
We present Keck spectroscopy and UKIRT near-IR imaging observations of two 170micron-selected sources from the ISO-FIRBACK survey which have faint counterparts in the optical, and r-K~5. Both sources were expected to lie at z>1 based on their far-infrared, submillimeter and radio fluxes, assuming a similar spectral energy distribution to the local ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) Arp220. However, our spectroscopy indicates that the redshifts of these galaxies are z<1: z=0.91 for FN1-64 and z=0.45 for FN1-40. While the bolometric luminosities of both galaxies are similar to Arp220, it app…
We present {\it Spitzer} images of the relatively sparse, low luminosity young cluster L988e, as well as complementary near-infrared (NIR) and submillimeter images of the region. The cluster is asymmetric, with the western region of the cluster embedded within the molecular cloud, and the slightly less dense eastern region to the east of, and on the edge of, the molecular cloud. With these data, as well as with extant H$α$ data of stars primarily found in the eastern region of the cluster, and a molecular $^{13}$CO gas emission map of the entire region, we investigate the distribution of formi…
Deep submillimetre surveys have successfully detected distant, star-forming galaxies, enshrouded in vast quantities of dust and which emit most of their energy at far infrared wavelengths. These luminous galaxies are an important constituent of the Universal star-formation history, and any complete model of galaxy evolution must account for their existence. Although these sources have been tentatively identified with very faint and sometimes very red optical counterparts, their poorly constrained redshift distribution has made their interpretation unclear. In particular, it was not understood …
We report on deep near-infrared (NIR) observations of submillimeter-selected galaxies (SMGs) with the Near Infrared Camera (NIRC) on the Keck I telescope. We have identified K-band candidate counterparts for 12 out of 15 sources in the SCUBA Cluster Lens Survey. Three SMGs remain non-detections with K-band limits of K>23 mag, corrected for lensing. Compensating for lensing we find a median magnitude of K=22+/-1 mag for the SMG population, but the range of NIR flux densities spans more than a factor of 400. For SMGs with confirmed counterparts based on accurate positions from radio, CO, and/or …
We argue that luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) may constitute a newly detectable population of gamma-ray sources for the next generation of ground and space-based high energy telescopes. Additionally, we report for the first time upper limits on their fluxes using data obtained with the EGRET telescope.
We present the serendipitous discovery of z=4.05 molecular gas CO emission lines with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer coincident with GN20 and GN20.2, two luminous submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North field (GOODS-N). These are among the most distant submillimeter-selected galaxies reliably identified through CO emission and also some of the most luminous known. In terms of CO to bolometric luminosities, stellar mass and star formation rates (SFRs), these newly discovered z>4 SMGs are similar to z~1.5-3 SMGs studied to date. These z~4 SMGs …
We present a stacking analysis of EGRET $γ$-ray observations at the positions of luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The latter were selected from the recently presented HCN survey, which is thought to contain the most active star forming regions of the universe. Different sorting criteria are used and, whereas no positive collective detection of $γ$-ray emission from these objects we determined both collective and individual upper limits. The upper most excess we find appears in the case of ULIRGs ordered by redshift, at a value of 1.8$σ$.
We investigate what we can learn about galaxy formation and evolution from the data which will be obtained by the forthcoming large submillimeter/millimeter facilities, mainly by the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array/Large Millimeter and Submillimeter Array (ALMA/LMSA). We first calculate the source counts from 350 um to 3 mm using the empirical infrared galaxy number count model of Takeuchi et al. (2001). Based on the number counts, we evaluate the source confusion and determine the confusion limit at various wavebands as a function of th…
We present ~2" resolution submillimeter observations of the submillimeter luminous giant Ly-alpha blob (LAB1) in the SSA 22 protocluster at redshift z=3.1 with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Although the expected submillimeter flux density is 16 mJy at 880 micron, no emission is detected with the 2".4 x 1".9 (18 x 14 kpc) beam at the 3 sigma level of 4.2 mJy beam^{-1} in the SMA field of view of 35". This is in contrast to the previous lower angular resolution (15") observations where a bright (17 mJy) unresolved submillimeter source was detected at 850 micron toward the LAB1 using the Submill…
We present a census of the population of deeply embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud complex based on a combination of Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared data from the "Cores to Disks" (c2d) legacy team and JCMT/SCUBA submillimeter maps from the COMPLETE team. We have applied a method developed for identifying embedded protostars in Perseus to these datasets and in this way construct a relatively unbiased sample of 27 candidate embedded protostars with envelopes more massive than our sensitivity limit (about 0.1 M_sun). Embedded YSOs are found in 35% of the …
A total of 19 luminous infrared galaxy mergers, with L_IR~2 10^11 L_sun for H_0=75 km/s/Mpc, have been observed in the HI line at Nancay and four of them were observed at Arecibo as well. Of these 19, ten had not been observed before. Six were clearly detected, one of which for the first time. The objective was to statistically sample the \HI gas mass in luminous infrared mergers along a starburst merger sequence where the molecular CO gas content is already known.
We present infrared photometry and optical and infrared spectroscopy of the recently-discovered, extremely luminous nearby quasar PDS 456. A number of broad emission features are seen in the near-infrared which we are unable to identify. We measure a more accurate redshift from a narrow forbidden emission line and compare the optical-infrared spectrum to that of 3C 273. The close similarity suggests that PDS 456 is a radio-quiet analogue of 3C 273, although radio observations do not support this idea.
Several recent studies have determined that large quantities of neutral gas are outflowing from the nuclei of almost all infrared-luminous galaxies. These measurements show that winds in infrared-luminous galaxies play a significant role in the evolution of galaxies and the intergalactic medium at redshifts z > 1, when infrared-luminous galaxies dominated the star formation rate of the universe. These conclusions rely on moderate resolution spectra (FWHM > 65 km/s) of the NaI D absorption line and the assumption that there are no unresolved, saturated velocity components. For the first time, w…
We select the Luminous Infrared Galaxies by cross-correlating the Faint Source Catalogue (FSC) and Point Source Catalogue (PSC) of the IRAS Survey with the Second Data Release of the SDSS for studying their infrared and optical properties. The total number of our sample is 1267 for FSC and 427 for PSC by using 2$σ$ significance level cross-section. The "likelihood ratio" method is used to estimate the sample's reliability and for a more reliable subsample (908 for FSC and 356 for PSC) selection. Then a Catalog with both the infrared, optical and radio informations is presented and will be used…
The case for substantial far infrared ice emission in local ultraluminous infrared galaxies, expected based on the presence of mid-infrared ice absorption in their spectra and the known far infrared optical properties of ice, is still largely unsupported by direct observation owing to insufficient far infrared spectral coverage. Some marginal supportive evidence is presented here. A clear consequence of far infrared ice emission is the need to extend the range of redshifts considered for submillimeter sources. This is demonstrated via the example of HDF 850.1. The solid phase of the ISM during…
The ubiquitous and tight correlation between the radio continuum emission and the far-infrared emission is also found to hold true for starburst galaxies and Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies wherein most of the emission is from compact structures. The infrared photon density in the cores is high enough for the inverse Compton scattering to dominate over the synchrotron emission thus spoiling the correlation. The high magnetic field postulated to avoid this, also encounters the problem of steep radio index that is not observed. Further, at high densities the flux of secondary electrons can exce…
Analysing mid--infrared ISOCAM images of the cluster of galaxies J1888.16CL, we identified among its members several particularly active galaxies with total infrared luminosities well above 10^{11} Lsun. If powered by dust enshrouded starbursts, as suggested by their optical spectra, these Luminous Infrared Galaxies would exhibit star formation rates surprisingly high in the cluster environment. The triggering mechanism is unclear but could be tidal collisions within sub-structures or infalling groups.
Photodissociation Region (PDR) models are computed over a wide range of physical conditions, from those appropriate to giant molecular clouds illuminated by the interstellar radiation field to the conditions experienced by circumstellar disks very close to hot massive stars. These models use the most up-to-date values of atomic and molecular data, the most current chemical rate coefficients, and the newest grain photoelectric heating rates which include treatments of small grains and large molecules. In addition, we examine the effects of metallicity and cloud extinction on the predicted line …
We present deep 850micron imaging of the z=0.773 strong lensing galaxy cluster RCSJ022434-0002.5 from the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey (RCS). These data are part of a larger submillimeter survey of RCS clusters, with SCUBA on the JCMT. We find five objects at 850micron, all of which are also detected at either 1.4-GHz, 450micron or both. The number density of objects in this field is in general agreement with the blank-field source counts; however, when combined with other cluster surveys a general tendency of cluster fields towards higher submm number densities is seen, which may be the result…
We present 350 micron observations of 15 Chapman et al. submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) with radio counterparts and optical redshifts. We detect 12 and obtain sensitive upper limits for three, providing direct, precise measurements of their far-infrared luminosities and characteristic dust temperatures. With these, we verify the linear radio--far-infrared correlation at redshifts of z ~ 1--3 and luminosities of 10^11--10^13 L_sun, with a power-law index of 1.02+-0.12 and rms scatter of 0.12 dex. However, either the correlation constant q or the dust emissivity index beta is lower than measured l…
We consider the hypothesis that luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) are sources of the UHECRs. By associating the AGASA triplet with the Arp 299 galaxy we obtain reasonable values for Galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields. We predict what the southern sky, to be seen by the Auger experiment, should look like, so that the LIRG hypothesis could be verified soon.
The evolution of the luminous infrared galaxy population is explored using a pure luminosity evolution model which incorporates the locally observed luminosity-temperature distribution for IRAS galaxies. Pure luminosity evolution models in a fixed $Λ$CDM cosmology are fitted to submillimeter (submm) and infrared counts, and backgrounds. It is found that the differences between the locally determined bivariate model and the single variable luminosity function (LF) do not manifest themselves in the observed counts, but rather are primarily apparent in the dust temperatures of sources in flux lim…
We present HST/NICMOS observations of a sample of LIRGs. We show that active star formation appears to be occurring not only in the bright nuclei of these galaxies, but also in luminous super-star clusters and giant HII regions with ages of up to 20-40Myr. This population of bright clusters and HII regions is unprecedented in normal galaxies and emphasizes the effects of the extreme star formation in LIRGs.
Observations at submillimeter wavelengths have revealed a population of sources thought to be at relatively large redshifts. The position of the 850 $μ$m passband on the Rayleigh-Jeans portion of the Planck function leads to a maximum redshift estimate of $z\sim$4.5 since sources will not retain their redshift independent brightness close to the peak of the Planck function and thus drop out of surveys. Here we review evidence that ice absorption is present in the spectra of local ultraluminous infrared galaxies which are often taken as analogs for the 850 $μ$m source population. We consider th…
We present deep mid-infrared spectroscopy with the Spitzer Space Telescope of 13 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North (GOODS-N) field. We find strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in all of our targets which allows us to measure mid-IR spectroscopic redshifts and place constraints on the contribution from star formation and active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity to the mid-IR emission. In the high signal-to-noise ratio composite spectrum of SMGs, we find that the hot dust continuum from an AGN contributes at most 30% of the mid-IR l…
We report mid-infrared observations of several luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) carried out with the Infrared Space Observatory. Our sample was chosen to represent different phases of a merger sequence of galaxy-galaxy interaction with special emphasis on early/intermediate stages of merging. The mid-infrared emission of these LIGs shows extended structures for the early and intermediate mergers, indicating that most of the mid-infrared luminosities are not from a central active galactic nucleus (AGN). Both the infrared hardness (indicated by the IRAS 12, 25, and 60 $\micron$ flux density rat…
Infrared to millimetre spectral energy distributions have been obtained for 41 bright ultra-luminous infrared galaxies. The observations were carried out with ISOPHOT between 10 and 200 micron and supplemented for 16 sources with SCUBA at 450 and 850 micron and with SEST at 1.3 mm. In addition, seven sources were observed at 1.2 and 2.2 $μ$m with the 2.2 m telescope on Calar Alto. These new SEDs represent the most complete set of infrared photometric templates obtained so far on ULIRGs in the local universe.
We present high resolution 890 micron images of two 20 mJy submillimeter galaxies, SMMJ123711+622212 and MIPS~J142824.0+352619, obtained using the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Using submillimeter interferometric observations with an angular resolution of 2.5", the coordinates of these high redshift sources are determined with an accuracy of 0.2". The new SMA data on SMMJ123711+622212 reveal an unresolved submm source offset to the east by 0.8" from an optical galaxy found in deep HST images, suggesting either a large galaxy with a dusty central region, or an interacting galaxy system. The SMA im…
I discuss our current understanding of the properties and nature of high redshift, far-infrared luminous galaxies selected through their observed-frame submillimeter emission.
