In this paper I discuss the formation of topological defects in quantum field theory and the relation between fractals and coherent states. The study of defect formation is particularly useful in the understanding of the same mathematical structure of quantum field theory with particular reference to the processes of non-equilibrium symmetry breaking. The functional realization of fractals in terms of the q-deformed algebra of coherent states is also presented. From one side, this sheds some light on the dynamical formation of fractals. From the other side, it also exhibits the fractal nature of coherent states, thus opening new perspectives in the analysis of those phenomena where coherent states play a relevant role. The global nature of fractals appears to emerge from local deformation processes and fractal properties are incorporated in the framework of the theory of entire analytical functions.
We study the effect of cooling on the spatial distribution of the topological charge density in quenched SU(2) lattice gauge theory with overlap fermions. We show that as the gauge field configurations are cooled, the Hausdorff dimension of regions where the topological charge is localized gradually changes from d = 2..3 towards the total space dimension. Therefore, the cooling procedure destroys some of the essential properties of the topological charge distribution.
We investigate topological order on fractal geometries embedded in $n$ dimensions. In particular, we diagnose the existence of the topological order through the lens of quantum information and geometry, i.e., via its equivalence to a quantum error-correcting code with a macroscopic code distance or the presence of macroscopic systoles in systolic geometry. We first prove a no-go theorem that $\mathbb{Z}_N$ topological order cannot survive on any fractal embedded in 2D. For fractal lattice models embedded in 3D or higher spatial dimensions, $\mathbb{Z}_N$ topological order survives if the bound…
It is suggested a topological hierarchical classification of the infinite many Localized phases figuring in the phase diagram of the Harper equation for anisotropy parameter $ε$ versus Energy $E$ with irrational magnetic flux $ω$. It is also proposed a rule that explain the fractal structure of the phase diagram. Among many other applications, this system is equivalent to the Semi-classical problem of Bloch electrons in a uniform magnetic field, the Azbel-Hofstadter model, where the discrete magnetic translations operators constitute the quantum algebra $U_q(sl_2)$ with $q^2=e^{i2πω}$. The mag…
We study the effect of bulk perturbations of N=(2,2) superconformal minimal models on topological defects. In particular, symmetries and more general topological defects which survive the flow to the IR are identified. Our method is to consider the topological subsector and make use of the Landau-Ginzburg formulation to describe RG flows and topological defects in terms of matrix factorizations.
In this paper and a companion one, we study the effect of integrable line defects on entanglement entropy in massive integrable field theories in 1+1 dimensions. The current paper focuses on topological defects that are purely transmissive. Using the form factor bootstrap method, we show that topological defects do not affect the the entanglement entropy in the UV limit and modify slightly the leading exponential correction in the IR. This conclusion holds for both unitary and non-unitary field theories. In contrast, non-topological defects affect the entanglement entropy more significantly bo…
We present a new generalized topological current in terms of the order parameter field $\vec ϕ$ to describe the arbitrary dimensional topological defects. By virtue of the $% ϕ$-mapping method, we show that the topological defects are generated from the zero points of the order parameter field $\vec ϕ$, and the topological charges of these topological defects are topological quantized in terms of the Hopf indices and Brouwer degrees of $ϕ$-mapping under the condition that the Jacobian $% J(\frac ϕv)\neq 0$. When $J(\frac ϕv)=0$, it is shown that there exist the crucial case of branch process. …
In the light of $ϕ$--mapping method and topological current theory, the topological structure and the topological quantization of arbitrary dimensional topological defects are investigated. It is pointed out that the topological quantum numbers of the defects are described by the Winding numbers of $ϕ$--mapping which are determined in terms of the Hopf indices and the Brouwer degrees of $ϕ$--mapping. Furthermore, it is shown that all the topological defects are generated from where $\vec ϕ=0$, i.e. from the zero points of the $ϕ$--mapping.
In the light of $ϕ$-mapping method and topological current theory, the topological structure and the topological quantization of arbitrary dimensional topological defects are obtained under the condition that the Jacobian $J(ϕ/v) \neq 0$. When $J(ϕ/v)=0$, it is shown that there exist the crucial case of branch process. Based on the implicit function theorem and the Taylor expansion, we detail the bifurcation of generalized topological current and find different directions of the bifurcation. The arbitrary dimensional topological defects are found splitting or merging at the degenerate point of…
In the light of $ϕ$-mapping method and topological current theory, the topological structure and the topological quantization of topological linear defects are obtained under the condition that the Jacobian $J(ϕ/v) \neq 0$. When $J(ϕ/v) = 0$, it is shown that there exist the crucial case of branch process. Based on the implicit function theorem and the Taylor expansion, the origin and bifurcation of the linear defects are detailed in the neighborhoods of the limit points and bifurcation points of $ϕ$-mapping, respectively.
From the topological properties of a three dimensional vector order parameter, the topological current of point defects is obtained. One shows that the charge of point defects is determined by Hopf indices and Brouwer degrees. The evolution of point defects is also studied. One concludes that there exist crucial cases of branch processes in the evolution of point defects when the Jacobian $D(\frac ϕx)=0$.
Integrable defects in two-dimensional integrable models are purely transmitting thus topological. By fusing them to integrable boundaries new integrable boundary conditions can be generated, and, from the comparison of the two solved boundary theories, explicit solutions of defect models can be extracted. This idea is used to determine the transmission factors and defect energies of topological defects in sinh-Gordon and Lee-Yang models. The transmission factors are checked in Lagrangian perturbation theory in the sinh-Gordon case, while the defect energies are checked against defect thermodyn…
We find topological defect solutions to the equations of motion of a generalised Higgs model with antisymmetric tensor fields. These solutions are direct higher dimensional analogues of the Nielsen-Olesen vortex solution for a gauge field in four dimensions.
I explain how conventional topological defects -- the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen (ANO) string and domain walls -- can acquire non-Abelian moduli localized on their world sheets. The set-up is conceptually similar and generalizes that used by Witten for cosmic strings.
We show how conformal field theory topological defects can relate solutions of open string field theory for different boundary conditions. To this end we generalize the results of Graham and Watts to include the action of defects on boundary condition changing fields. Special care is devoted to the general case when nontrivial multiplicities arise upon defect action. Surprisingly the fusion algebra of defects is realized on open string fields only up to a (star algebra) isomorphism.
We propose a class of field theories featuring solitonic solutions in which topological defects can end when they intersect other defects of equal or higher dimensionality. Such configurations may be termed ``Dirichlet topological defects'', in analogy with the D-branes of string theory. Our discussion focuses on defects in scalar field theories with either gauge or global symmetries, in (3+1) dimensions; the types of defects considered include walls ending on walls, strings on walls, and strings on strings.
This is the second part of two papers where we study the effect of integrable line defects on bipartite entanglement entropy in integrable field theories. In this paper, we consider non-topological line defects in Ising field theory. We derive an infinite series expression for the entanglement entropy and show that both the UV and IR limits of the bulk entanglement entropy are modified by the line defect. In the UV limit, we give an infinite series expression for the coefficient in front of the logarithmic divergence and the exact defect $g$-function. By tuning the defect to be purely transmis…
Two different conformal field theories can be joined together along a defect line. We study such defects for the case where the conformal field theories on either side are single free bosons compactified on a circle. We concentrate on topological defects for which the left- and right-moving Virasoro algebras are separately preserved, but not necessarily any additional symmetries. For the case where both radii are rational multiples of the self-dual radius we classify these topological defects. We also show that the isomorphism between two T-dual free boson conformal field theories can be descr…
A novel U(1) topological gauge field theory for topological defects in liquid crystals is constructed by considering the U(1) gauge field is invariant under the director inversion. Via the U(1) gauge potential decomposition theory and the $ϕ$-mapping topological current theory, the decomposition expression of U(1) gauge field and the unified topological current for monopoles and strings in liquid crystals are obtained. It is revealed that monopoles and strings are located in different spatial dimensions and their topological charges are just the winding numbers of $ϕ$-mapping.
We deal with the presence of topological defects in models for two real scalar fields. We comment on defects hosting topological defects, and we search for explicit defect solutions using the trial orbit method. As we know, under certain circumstances the second order equations of motion can be solved by first order differential equations. In this case we show that the trial orbit method can be used very efficiently to obtain explicit solutions.
Topological defects attract much recent interest in high-energy and condensed matter physics because they encode (non-invertible) symmetries and dualities. We study codimension-1 topological defects from a hamiltonian point of view, with the defect location playing the role of `time'. We show that the Weinstein symplectic category governs topological defects and their fusion: each defect is a lagrangian correspondence, and defect fusion is their geometric composition. We illustrate the utility of these ideas by constructing S- and T-duality defects in string theory, including a novel topology-…
The structure of extrinsic defects in topologically ordered states of matter is host to a rich set of universal physics. Extrinsic defects in 2+1 dimensional topological states include line-like defects, such as boundaries between topologically distinct states, and point-like defects, such as junctions between different line defects. Gapped boundaries in particular can themselves be \it topologically \rm distinct, and the junctions between them can localize topologically protected zero modes, giving rise to topological ground state degeneracies and projective non-Abelian statistics. In this pa…
These lectures review certain topological defects and aspects of their cosmology. Unconventional material includes brief descriptions of electroweak defects, the structure of domain walls in non-Abelian theories, and the spectrum of magnetic monopoles in SU(5) Grand Unified theory.
We explore topological defects in the 4-dimensional pure $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory. This theory has 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ center symmetry as well as the Kramers-Wannier-Wegner (KWW) duality. We construct the KWW duality topological defects in the similar way to that constructed by Aasen, Mong, Fendley arXiv:1601.07185 for the 2-dimensional Ising model. These duality defects turn out to be non-invertible. We also construct the 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry defects as well as the junctions among KWW duality defects and 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ center symmetry defects. The crossing …
Periodically driven (Floquet) systems have been under active theoretical and experimental investigations. This paper aims at a systematic study in the following aspects of Floquet systems: (i) A systematic formulation of topological invariants of Floquet systems based on the cooperation of topology and symmetries. Topological invariants are constructed for the ten symmetry classes in all spatial dimensions, for both homogeneous Floquet systems (Floquet topological insulators and superconductors) and Floquet topological defects. Meanwhile, useful representative Dirac Hamiltonians for all the sy…
We discuss a new mechanism of obtaining a period of cosmological inflation in the context of string theory. This mechanism is based on embedded defects which form dynamically on higher dimensional D-branes. Such defects generate topological inflation, but unlike topological inflation from stable defects, here there is a natural graceful exit from inflation: the decay of the embedded defect. We demonstrate the idea in the context of a brane-antibrane annihilation process. The graceful exit mechanism suggested here applies generically to all realizations of inflation on D-branes.
By making use of the complete decomposition of SO(3) spin connection, the topological defect in 3-dimensional Euclidean gravity is studied in detail. The topological structure of disclination is given as the combination of a monopole structure and a vortex structure. Furthermore, the Kac-Moody algebra generated by the monopole and vortex is discussed in three dimensional Chern-Simons theory.
