The angular power spectrum of a stationary random field on the sphere is estimated from the needlet coefficients of a single realization, observed with increasingly fine resolution. The estimator we consider is similar to the one recently used in practice by (Faÿ et al. 2008) to estimate the power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The consistency of the estimator, in the asymptotics of high frequencies, is proved for a model with a stationary Gaussian field corrupted by heteroscedastic noise and missing data.
Let $X_1,...,X_n$ be a random sample from some unknown probability density $f$ defined on a compact homogeneous manifold $\mathbf M$ of dimension $d \ge 1$. Consider a 'needlet frame' $\{ϕ_{j η}\}$ describing a localised projection onto the space of eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator on $\mathbf M$ with corresponding eigenvalues less than $2^{2j}$, as constructed in \cite{GP10}. We prove non-asymptotic concentration inequalities for the uniform deviations of the linear needlet density estimator $f_n(j)$ obtained from an empirical estimate of the needlet projection $\sum_ηϕ_{j η} \int f ϕ_{…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of needlets-based approximate maximum likelihood estimators for the spectral parameters of Gaussian and isotropic spherical random fields. We prove consistency and asymptotic Gaussianity, in the high-frequency limit, thus generalizing earlier results by Durastanti et al. (2011) based upon standard Fourier analysis on the sphere. The asymptotic results are then illustrated by an extensive Monte Carlo study.
In a recent paper, we analyzed the properties of a new kind of spherical wavelets (called needlets) for statistical inference procedures on spherical random fields; the investigation was mainly motivated by applications to cosmological data. In the present work, we exploit the asymptotic uncorrelation of random needlet coefficients at fixed angular distances to construct subsampling statistics evaluated on Voronoi cells on the sphere. We illustrate how such statistics can be used for isotropy tests and for bootstrap estimation of nuisance parameters, even when a single realization of the spher…
The aim of this paper is to study the nonparametric regression estimators on the sphere built by the needlet block thresholding. The block thresholding procedure proposed here follows the method introduced by Hall, Kerkyacharian and Picard in [Hall, Kerkyacharian, Picard, (1998), (1999)], modified to exploit the properties of the spherical standard needlets. Therefore, we will investigate on their convergence rates, attaining their adaptive properties over the Besov balls. This work is strongly motivated by issues arising in Cosmology and Astrophysics, concerning in particular the analysis of …
In the random coefficients binary choice model, a binary variable equals 1 iff an index $X^\topβ$ is positive. The vectors $X$ and $β$ are independent and belong to the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$.We prove lower bounds on the minimax risk for estimation of the density $f\_β$ over Besov bodies where the loss is a power of the $L^p(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ norm for $1\le p\le \infty$. We show that a hard thresholding estimator based on a needlet expansion with data-driven thresholds achieves these lower bounds up to logarithmic factors.
The purpose of this paper is to join two different threads of the recent literature on random fields on the sphere, namely the statistical analysis of higher order angular power spectra on one hand, and the construction of second-generation wavelets on the sphere on the other. To this aim, we introduce the needlets bispectrum and we derive a number of convergence results. Here, the limit theory is developed in the high resolution sense. The leading motivation of these results is the need for statistical procedures for searching non-Gaussianity in Cosmic Microwave Background radiation.
We investigate invariant random fields on the sphere using a new type of spherical wavelets, called needlets. These are compactly supported in frequency and enjoy excellent localization properties in real space, with quasi-exponentially decaying tails. We show that, for random fields on the sphere, the needlet coefficients are asymptotically uncorrelated for any fixed angular distance. This property is used to derive CLT and functional CLT convergence results for polynomial functionals of the needlet coefficients: here the asymptotic theory is considered in the high-frequency sense. Our propos…
This paper is concerned with density estimation of directional data on the sphere. We introduce a procedure based on thresholding on a new type of spherical wavelets called {\it needlets}. We establish a minimax result and prove its optimality. We are motivated by astrophysical applications, in particular in connection with the analysis of ultra high energy cosmic rays.
We present a topological multiple testing scheme for detecting peaks on the sphere under isotropic Gaussian noise, where tests are performed at local maxima of the observed field filtered by the spherical needlet transform. Our setting is different from the standard Euclidean/large same asymptotic framework, yet highly relevant to realistic experimental circumstances for some important areas of application in astronomy. More precisely, we focus on cases where a single realization of a smooth isotropic Gaussian random field on the sphere is observed, and a number of well-localized signals are s…
We consider the statistical analysis of random sections of a spin fibre bundle over the sphere. These may be thought of as random fields that at each point p in $S^2$ take as a value a curve (e.g. an ellipse) living in the tangent plane at that point $T_{p}S^2$, rather than a number as in ordinary situations. The analysis of such fields is strongly motivated by applications, for instance polarization experiments in Cosmology. To investigate such fields, spin needlets were recently introduced by Geller and Marinucci (2008) and Geller et al. (2008). We consider the use of spin needlets for spin …
This work is concerned with the study of the adaptivity properties of nonparametric regression estimators over the $d$-dimensional sphere within the global thresholding framework. The estimators are constructed by means of a form of spherical wavelets, the so-called needlets, which enjoy strong concentration properties in both harmonic and real domains. The author establishes the convergence rates of the $L^p$-risks of these estimators, focussing on their minimax properties and proving their optimality over a scale of nonparametric regularity function spaces, namely, the Besov spaces.
In recent years, a rapidly growing literature has focussed on the construction of wavelet systems to analyze functions defined on the sphere. Our purpose in this paper is to generalize these constructions to situations where sections of line bundles, rather than ordinary scalar-valued functions, are considered. In particular, we propose {\em needlet-type spin wavelets} as an extension of the needlet approach recently introduced by Narcowich, Petrushev and Ward, and then considered for more general manifolds by Geller and Mayeli. We discuss localization properties in the real and harmonic domai…
We construct an adaptive estimator of a density function on $d$ dimensional unit sphere $S^d$ ($d \geq 2 $), using a new type of spherical frames. The frames, or as we call them, stereografic wavelets are obtained by transforming a wavelet system, namely Daubechies, using some stereographic operators. We prove that our estimator achieves an optimal rate of convergence on some Besov type class of functions by adapting to unknown smoothness. Our new construction of stereografic wavelet system gives us a multiresolution approximation of $L^2(S^d)$ which can be used in many approximation and estim…
We consider the correlation structure of the random coefficients for a wide class of wavelet systems on the sphere (Mexican needlets) which were recently introduced in the literature by Geller and Mayeli (2007). We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for these coefficients to be asymptotic uncorrelated in the real and in the frequency domain. Here, the asymptotic theory is developed in the high resolution sense. Statistical applications are also discussed, in particular with reference to the analysis of cosmological data.
This paper reconsiders the problem of calculating the expected set of probabilities <p_i>, given the observed set of items {m_i}, that are distributed among n bins with an (unknown) set of probabilities {p_i} for being placed in the ith bin. The problem is often formulated using Bayes theorem and the multinomial distribution, along with a constant prior for the values of the p_i, leading to a Dirichlet distribution for the {p_i}. The moments of the p_i can then be calculated exactly. Here a new approach is suggested for the calculation of the moments, that uses a change of variables that reduc…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of least squares estimators in regression models for long-range dependent random fields observed on spheres. The least squares estimator can be given as a weighted functional of long-range dependent random fields. It is known that in this scenario the limits can be non-Gaussian. We derive the limit distribution and the corresponding rate of convergence for the estimators. The results were obtained under rather general assumptions on the random fields. Simulation studies were conducted to support theoretical findings.
The aim of this paper is to define a nonlinear least squares estimator for the spectral parameters of a spherical autoregressive process of order 1 in a parametric setting. Furthermore, we investigate on its asymptotic properties, such as weak consistency and asymptotic normality.
The paper considers the stationary Poisson Boolean model with spherical grains and proposes a family of nonparametric estimators for the radius distribution. These estimators are based on observed distances and radii, weighted in an appropriate way. They are ratio-unbiased and asymptotically consistent for growing observation window. It is shown that the asymptotic variance exists and is given by a fairly explicit integral expression. Asymptotic normality is established under a suitable integrability assumption on the weight function. The paper also provides a short discussion of related estim…
We consider the deconvolution problem for densities supported on a $(d-1)$-dimensional sphere with unknown center and unknown radius, in the situation where the distribution of the noise is unknown and without any other observations. We propose estimators of the radius, of the center, and of the density of the signal on the sphere that are proved consistent without further information. The estimator of the radius is proved to have almost parametric convergence rate for any dimension $d$. When $d=2$, the estimator of the density is proved to achieve the same rate of convergence over Sobolev reg…
We study the weak convergence (in the high-frequency limit) of the parameter estimators of power spectrum coefficients associated with Gaussian, spherical and isotropic random fields. In particular, we introduce a Whittle-type approximate maximum likelihood estimator and we investigate its asympotic weak consistency and Gaussianity, in both parametric and semiparametric cases.
We propose nonparametric estimators for the second-order central moments of possibly anisotropic spherical random fields, within a functional data analysis context. We consider a measurement framework where each random field among an identically distributed collection of spherical random fields is sampled at a few random directions, possibly subject to measurement error. The collection of random fields could be i.i.d. or serially dependent. Though similar setups have already been explored for random functions defined on the unit interval, the nonparametric estimators proposed in the literature…
The link between Gaussian random fields and Markov random fields is well established based on a stochastic partial differential equation in Euclidean spaces, where the Matérn covariance functions are essential. However, the Matérn covariance functions are not always positive definite on circles and spheres. In this manuscript, we focus on the extension of this link to circles, and show that the link between Gaussian random fields and Markov random fields on circles is valid based on the circular Matérn covariance function instead. First, we show that this circular Matérn function is the covari…
