Electronic phases with symmetry properties matching those of conventional liquid crystals have recently been discovered in transport experiments on semiconductor heterostructures and metal oxides at milli-Kelvin temperatures. We report the spontaneous onset of a onedimensional, incommensurate modulation of the spin system in the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.45 upon cooling below ~150 K, while static magnetic order is absent above 2 K. The evolution of this modulation with temperature and doping parallels that of the in-plane anisotropy of the resistivity, indicating an electronic nematic phase that is stable over a wide temperature range. The results suggest that soft spin fluctuations are a microscopic route towards electronic liquid crystals, and nematic order can coexist with high-temperature superconductivity in underdoped cuprates.
We report magnetoresistance measurements of ramp type superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junctions. The junctions consist of underdoped $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_y$ (YBCO) electrodes separated by a barrier of $YBa_{2}Cu_{2.6}Ga_{0.4}O_y$. We observe a large positive magnetoresistance, linear in the field. We suggest that this unusual magnetoresistance originates in the field dependence of the proximity effect. Our results indicate that in underdoped YBCO/N/YBCO SNS structures, the proximity effect does not exhibit the anomalously long range found in optimally doped YBCO structures. From our data…
The electrical resistivity rho_c of the underdoped cuprate superconductor YBCO was measured perpendicular to the CuO_2 planes on ultra-high quality single crystals in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity. The incoherent insulating-like behavior of rho_c at high temperature, characteristic of all underdoped cuprates, is found to cross over to a coherent regime of metallic behavior at low temperature. This crossover coincides with the emergence of the small electron pocket detected in the Fermi surface of YBCO via quantum oscillations, the Hall and Seebeck coefficients and …
The evolution of the so-called `41meV resonance' in the magnetic response of YBCO cuprates is studied with slave-boson theory for the t-t'-J-model. The resonance appears as a collective spin fluctuation in the d-wave superconducting (SC) state. It is undamped at optimal doping due to a threshold in the excitation energies of particle--hole pairs with relative wave vector (pi,pi). When hole filling is reduced, the resonance moves to lower energies and broadens. Below the resonance energy we find a crossover to an incommensurate response in agreement with a recent experiment on YBa_2CU_3O_6.6. W…
Close to optimal doping, the copper oxide superconductors show 'strange metal' behavior, suggestive of strong fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point. Such a critical point requires a line of classical phase transitions terminating at zero temperature near optimal doping inside the superconducting 'dome'. The underdoped region of the temperature-doping phase diagram from which superconductivity emerges is referred to as the 'pseudogap' because evidence exists for partial gapping of the conduction electrons, but so far there is no compelling thermodynamic evidence as to whether th…
The superfluid density rho_s(T) = 1/lambda^2(T) has been measured at 2.64 GHz in highly underdoped YBCO, at 37 dopings with T_c between 3 K and 17 K. Within limits set by the transition width Delta T_c ~ 0.4 K, rho_s(T) shows no evidence of critical fluctuations as T goes to T_c, with a mean-field-like transition and no indication of vortex unbinding. Instead, we propose that rho_s displays the behaviour expected for a quantum phase transition in the (3 + 1)-dimensional XY universality class, with rho_s0 ~ (p - p_c), T_c ~ (p - p_c)^1/2 and rho_s(T) ~ (T_c - T)^1 as T goes to T_c.
Recently, a strongly enhanced xy anisotropy of magnetic excitations was observed in YBa_2Cu_3O_y (YBCO_y) with y=6.45 and Tc=35 K [Science 319, 597 (2008)]. Unlike the observation in YBCO_6.6 and YBCO_6.85, the anisotropy grows to be pronounced at lower temperature and at lower energy, and is not suppressed by the onset of superconductivity. We propose that the effect of singlet pairing is substantially reduced in YBCO_6.45. This reduction concomitantly enhances an order competing with singlet pairing, a strong tendency of the so-called d-wave Pomeranchuk instability, leading to the magnetic e…
We report on the reversible, nonvolatile and polarity dependent resistive switching between superconductor and insulator states at the interfaces of a Au/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO)/Au system. We show that the superconducting state of YBCO in regions near the electrodes can be reversibly removed and restored. The possible origin of the switching effect may be the migration of oxygen or metallic ions along the grain boundaries that control the intergrain superconducting coupling. Four-wire bulk resistance measurements reveal that the migration is not restricted to interfaces and produce signi…
The existence of coherent magnetic correlations in the normal phase of cuprate high-temperature superconductors has proven difficult to measure directly. Here we report on a study of ferromagnetic-superconductor bilayers of La2/3Ca1/3MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7 (LCMO/YBCO) with varying YBCO layer thicknesses. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we demonstrate that the ferromagnetic layer induces a Cu magnetic moment in the adjacent high-temperature superconductor. For thin samples, this moment exists at all temperatures below the Curie temperature of the LCMO layer. However, for a YBCO layer thicker t…
We have studied nodal tunneling into YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) films under magnetic fields. The films' orientation was such that the CuO2 planes were perpendicular to the surface with the a and b axis at 450 form the normal. The magnetic field was applied parallel to the surface and perpendicular to the CuO2 planes. The Zero Bias Conductance Peak (ZBCP) characteristic of nodal tunneling splits under the effect of surface currents produced by the applied fields. Measuring this splitting under different field conditions, zero field cooled and field cooled, reveals that these currents have different ori…
Quantum oscillations and negative Hall and Seebeck coefficients at low temperature and high magnetic field have shown the Fermi surface of underdoped cuprates to contain a small closed electron pocket. It is thought to result from a reconstruction by charge order, but whether it is the order seen by NMR and ultrasound above a threshold field or the short-range modulations seen by X-ray diffraction in zero field is unclear. Here we use measurements of the thermal Hall conductivity in YBCO to show that Fermi-surface reconstruction occurs only above a sharply defined onset field, equal to the tra…
We report a comprehensive polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering study of the evolution of the dynamical spin susceptibility with temperature and doping in three underdoped single crystals of the \YBCO{6+x} high temperature superconductor: \YBCO{6.5} (Tc = 52 K), \YBCO{6.7} (Tc = 67 K), and \YBCO{6.85} (T_c = 87 K). Theoretical implications of these data are discussed, and a critique of recent attempts to relate the spin excitations to the thermodynamics of high temperature superconductors is given.
The Nernst coefficient of the cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3Oy was recently shown to become strongly anisotropic within the basal plane when cooled below the pseudogap temperature T*, revealing that the pseudogap phase breaks the four-fold rotational symmetry of the CuO2 planes. Here we report on the evolution of this Nernst anisotropy at low temperature, once superconductivity is suppressed by a magnetic field. We find that the anisotropy drops rapidly below 80 K, to vanish in the T=0 limit. We show that this loss of anisotropy is due to the emergence of a small high-mobility electron-like po…
Recently, Eremin and Manske [1] presented a oneband Fermi-liquid theory for the in-plane magnetic anisotropy in untwinned high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O6:85 (YBCO). They claimed that they found good agreement with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra. In this Comment, we point out that their conclusion on this important problem may be questionable due to an error in logic about the orthorhombicity delta_0 characterizing the lattice structure of YBCO. In Ref. [1], a single band at delta_0>0 is proved to be in accordance with the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on untwin…
Carrier injection performed in oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7(YBCO) hetero-structure junctions exhibited tunable resistance that was entirely different with behaviors of semiconductor devices. Tunable superconductivity in YBCO junctions, increasing over 20 K in transition temperature, has achieved by using electric processes. To our knowledge, this is the first observation that intrinsic property of high TC superconductors superconductivity can be adjusted as tunable functional parameters of devices. The fantastic phenomenon caused by carrier injection was discussed based on a proposed charge carr…
Using series expansions and spin-wave theory we calculate the spin-stiffness anisotropy $ρ_{sx}/ρ_{sy}$ in Heisenberg models on the square lattice with anisotropic couplings $J_x,J_y$. We find that for the weakly anisotropic spin-half model ($J_x\approx J_y$), $ρ_{sx}/ρ_{sy}$ deviates substantially from the naive estimate $ρ_{sx}/ρ_{sy} \approx J_x/J_y$. We argue that this deviation can be responsible for pinning the electronic liquid crystal direction, a novel effect recently discovered in YBCO. For completeness, we also study the spin-stiffness for arbitrary anisotropy $J_x/J_y$ for spin-hal…
We report detailed transport studies on ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructures. Epitaxial heterostructures of half-metal colossal magnetoresistive La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (HM-CMR) and high Tc superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) are grown on SrTiO3 (100) single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Using the HM--CMR layer as source for spin-polarized quasiparticles, we show the effect of injection of spin-polarized quasiparticles into the ab-plane and along the c-axis of YBCO. The results show a drop in the ab-plane resistance Rab (T) in the case of injection along the c-axis that is discusse…
Tunneling and theoretical studies have suggested that Andreev bound states form at certain surfaces of unconventional superconductors. Through studies of the temperature and field dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth lambda_ab at low temperature, we have found strong evidence for the presence of these states in clean single crystal YBCO and BSCCO. Crystals cut to expose a [110] interface show a strong upturn in lambda_ab at around 7K, when the field is oriented so that the supercurrents flow around this surface. In YBCO this upturn is completely suppressed by a field of ~0.1 T…
SQUID magnetization measurements in oriented powders of Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$% _{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$, with $x$ ranging from 0 to 0.2, for $y\approx 6.1$ and $y\approx 6.97$, have been performed in order to study the doping dependence of the fluctuating diamagnetism above the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$. While for optimally doped compounds the diamagnetic susceptibility and the magnetization curves $-M_{fl}(T=const$) vs. $H$ are rather well justified on the basis of an anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) functional, in underdoped and overdoped regimes an anomalous diamagnetism is …
Quantum oscillations have revealed the presence of a small pocket in the Fermi surface of the cuprate superconductor YBCO, whose nature and origin are the subject of much debate. Interpretations include electron and hole pockets; scenarios include Fermi-surface reconstruction by antiferromagnetism, d-density-wave order, and stripe order. Here we report quantum oscillations in the Seebeck and Nernst coefficients of YBCO and show, from the magnitude and sign of the Seebeck coefficient, that they come from an electron pocket. Using measurements of the Seebeck coefficient as a function of hole dop…
A method is presented to measure the absolute value of the London penetration depth, $λ$, from the frequency shift of a resonator. The technique involves coating a high-$T_c$ superconductor (HTSC) with film of low - Tc material of known thickness and penetration depth. The method is applied to measure London penetration depth in YBa2Cu3O{7-δ} (YBCO) Bi2Sr2CaCu2O{8+δ} (BSCCO) and Pr{1.85}Ce{0.15}CuO{4-δ}$ (PCCO). For YBCO and BSCCO, the values of $λ(0)$ are in agreement with the literature values. For PCCO $λ\approx 2790$ Å, reported for the first time.
Signatures of strong coupling effects in cuprate high-$T_{c}$ superconductors have been authenticated through a variety of spectroscopic probes. However, the microscopic nature of relevant excitations has not been agreed upon. Here we report on magneto-optical studies of the CuO$_{2}$ plane carrier dynamics in a prototypical high-$T_{c}$ superconductor YBa$%_{2} $Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ (YBCO). Infrared data are directly compared with earlier inelastic neutron scattering results by Dai \textit{et al}. [Nature (London) \textbf{406}, 965 (2000)] revealing a characteristic depression of the magnetic reso…
Charge density-wave order has been observed in cuprate superconductors whose crystal structure breaks the square symmetry of the CuO2 planes, such as orthorhombic YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO), but not so far in cuprates that preserve that symmetry, such as tetragonal HgBa2CuO4+d (Hg1201). We have measured the Hall (R_H), Seebeck (S), and Nernst coefficients of underdoped Hg1201 in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity. The high-field R_H(T) and S(T) are found to drop with decreasing temperature and become negative, as also observed in YBCO at comparable doping. In YBCO, the negative R…
The magnetic excitation spectrum of the t-t'-J-model is studied in mean-field theory and compared to inelastic neutron-scattering (INS) experiments on YBCO and BSCCO superconductors. Within the slave-particle formulation the dynamical spin response is calculated from a renormalized Fermi liquid with an effective interaction ~J in the magnetic particle--hole channel. We obtain the so-called 41meV resonance at wave vector (pi,pi) as a collective spin-1 excitation in the d-wave superconducting state. It appears sharp (undamped), if the underlying Fermi surface is hole-like with a sufficient next-…
The coupling between superconductors and a quantum critical liquid that is nearly superconducting provides natural interpretation for the Josephson effect over unexpectedly long junctions, and the remarkable stripe-spacing dependence of the critical temperature in LSCO and YBCO superconductors.
We apply the new-generation ARPES methodology to the most widely studied cuprate superconductor YBCO. Considering the nodal direction, we found noticeable renormalization effects known as "kinks" both in the quasiparticle dispersion and scattering rate, the bilayer splitting and evidence for strong interband scattering -- all the characteristic features of the nodal quasiparticles detected earlier in BSCCO. The typical energy scale and the doping dependence of the "kinks" clearly point to their intimate relation with the spin-1 resonance seen in the neutron scattering experiments. Our findings…
The underlying physics of the magnetic-field-induced resistive state in high temperature cuprate superconductors remains a mystery. One interpretation is that the application of magnetic field destroys the d-wave superconducting gap to uncover a Fermi surface that behaves like a conventional (i.e.Fermi Liquid) metal (1). Another view is that an applied magnetic field destroys long range superconducting phase coherence, but the superconducting gap amplitude survives (2, 3). By measuring the specific heat of ultra-clean YBa2Cu3O6.56 (YBCO 6.56), we obtain a measure of the quasi-particle density …
By using a molecular beam epitaxy technique, we fabricate a new type of superconducting superlattices with controlled atomic layer thicknesses of alternating blocks between heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5, which exhibits a strong Pauli pair-breaking effect, and nonmagnetic metal YbCoIn_5. The introduction of the thickness modulation of YbCoIn_5 block layers breaks the inversion symmetry centered at the superconducting block of CeCoIn_5. This configuration leads to dramatic changes in the temperature and angular dependence of the upper critical field, which can be understood by considerin…
We present magneto-transport calculations for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) materials to show that the electron-like metallic chain state gives both the negative Hall effect and in-plane anisotropic large Nernst signal. We show that the inevitable presence of the metallic 1D CuO chain layer lying between the CuO2 bilayers in YBCO renders an electron-like Fermi surface in the doping range as wide as p=0.05 to overdoping. With underdoping, a pseudogap opening in the CuO2 state reduces its hole-carrier contribution, and therefore the net electron-like quasiparticles dominate the transport propert…
We analyze the prospects for stabilizing Majorana zero modes in semiconductor nanowires that are proximity-coupled to higher-temperature superconductors. We begin with the case of iron pnictides which, though they are s-wave superconductors, are believed to have superconducting gaps that change sign. We then consider the case of cuprate superconudctors. We show that a nanowire on a step-like surface, especially in an orthorhombic material such as YBCO, can support Majorana zero modes at an elevated temperature.
In- and out-of-plane optical spectra and specific heat measurements for the single layer cuprate superconductor Hg-1201 at optimal doping (Tc = 97 K) are presented. Both the in-plane and out-of-plane superfluid density agree well with a recently proposed scaling relation rho_{s}=sigma_{dc}T_{c}. It is shown that there is a superconductivity induced increase of the in-plane low frequency spectral weight which follows the trend found in underdoped and optimally doped Bi-2212 and optimally doped Bi-2223. We observe an increase of optical spectral weight which corresponds to a change in kinetic en…
Cuprate superconductors have a universal tendency to form charge density-wave (CDW) order which competes with superconductivity and is strongest at a doping $p \simeq 0.12$. Here we show that in the archetypal cuprate YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ (YBCO) pressure suppresses charge order, but does not affect the pseudogap phase. This is based on transport measurements under pressure, which reveal that the onset of the pseudogap at $T^*$ is independent of pressure, while the negative Hall effect, a clear signature of CDW order in YBCO, is suppressed by pressure. We also find that pressure and magneti…
Motivated by recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurement that superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) exhibits a $d_{x^2-y^2} + s$-symmetry gap, we show possible quasi-one-dimensional modulations of local density of states in YBCO. These aniostropic gap and defect induced stripe structures are most conspicuous at higher biases and arise due to the nesting effect associated with a Fermi liquid. Observation of these spectra by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) would unify the picture among STM, ARPES, and inelastic neutron scattering for YBCO.
The interplay between superconductivity and any other competing order is an essential part of the long-standing debate on the origin of high temperature superconductivity in cuprates. Akin to the situation of heavy fermions, organic superconductors and pnictides, it has been proposed that the pairing mechanism in cuprates comes from fluctuations of a nearby quantum phase transition. Recent evidence of charge modulation and the associated fluctuations in the pseudogap phase of YBa_2Cu_3O_y make charge order a likely candidate for a competing order. However, a thermodynamic signature of the char…
Superconductivity in cuprates peaks in the doping regime between a metal at high p and an insulator at low p. Understanding how the material evolves from metal to insulator is a fundamental and open question. Early studies in high magnetic fields revealed that below some critical doping an insulator-like upturn appears in the resistivity of cuprates at low temperature, but its origin has remained a puzzle. Here we propose that this 'metal-to-insulator crossover' is due to a drop in carrier density n associated with the onset of the pseudogap phase at a critical doping p*. We use high-field res…
We report the observation of a weak spontaneous magnetic field appearing at the transition temperature of $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ into the superconducting state. The effect is observed in 14 out of 15 epitaxial films grown on different substrates and by two distinct techniques. The average magnetic field sensed by the SQUID magnetometer is of the order of 10$^{-5}$ G. The effect indicates a breaking of both parity and time reversal symmetries in the superconductor. We consider two different interpretations: (i) The condensate carries an intrinsic magnetic moment. At T=0, this moment is between …
We propose a model for high-Tc superconductors that includes both the spin fluctuations of the Cu++ magnetic ions and of the spins of O-- doped holes (spinons). The charge of the dopants (holons) is associated to quantum skyrmion excitations of the Cu++ spin background. The quantum skyrmion effective interaction potential is evaluated as a function of doping and temperature, indicating that Cooper pair formation is determined by the competition between these two types of spin fluctuations. The superconducting transition occurs when the effective potential allows for skyrmion bound states. Our …
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments in high-$T_c$ cuprates have evidenced a new magnetic excitation present in the superconducting state. In particular, recent experiments on single layer Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$, performed near optimum doping ($ T_{c} \sim 90$ K), provide evidence of a sharp magnetic resonant mode below $ T_{c}$, similar to previous reports on the YBCO and BSCCO bilayer systems. This result supports models that ascribe a key role to magnetic excitations in the mechanism of superconductivity.
The symmetry operations of the crystal groups relevant for the high temperature superconductors HgBa2CuO4+x (Hg1201), YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO), and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (BSCCO) are elucidated. The allowable combinations of the superconducting order parameter (OP) components are presented for both the angular momentum and lattice representations. For tetragonal Hg1201, the spin singlet OP components are composed from four sets of compatible basis functions, which combine to give the generalized s-, dx2-y2-, dxy-, and gxy(x2-y2)- wave OPs. In YBCO, elements of s- and dx2-y2- wave sets are compatible, but i…
A symmetry-based interpretation of published experimental results demonstrates that the pseudo-gap phase of underdoped HgBa2CuO4(Hg1201) possesses an ordered state of magnetic charge epitomized by Cu magnetic monopoles. Magnetic properties of one-layer Hg1201 and two-layer YBa2Cu3O6 + x (YBCO) cuprates have much in common, because their pseudo-gap phases possess the same magnetic space-group, e.g., both underdoped cuprates allow the magneto-electric (Kerr) effect. Differences in their properties stem from different Cu site symmetries, leaving Cu magnetic monopoles forbidden in YBCO. Resonant x…
General field theory of a fluctuating d-wave superconductor is constructed and proposed as an effective description of superconducting cuprates at low energies. The theory is used to resolve a puzzle posed by recent experiments on superfluid density in severely underdoped YBCO. In particular, the overall temperature dependence of the superfluid density at low dopings is argued to be described well by the strongly anisotropic weakly interacting three-dimensional Bose gas, and thus approximately linear in temperature with an almost doping-independent slope.
Understanding the pseudo-gap phase from which a superconducting state emerges is a central problem in the physics of cuprates. The phase exists below a temperature T* for less than optimal doping of holes, and no clear jump in the specific heat or change in lattice symmetry is observed on crossing T*. Here we show that, two sets of intriguing experimental results in the literature concerning magnetic properties of underdoped YBCO are united in a single theory based on Cu quadrupole moments. The quadrupole is a product of spin and the electric dipole, so there is no magnetic dipole moment, and …
